Grossek’s View Grossek’s view SCHOOL CHOICE DILEMMAS THE reception area was unusually quiet for a Monday morning, or so she thought, as she waited patiently for her appointment with the school principal. Mrs Tonkin’s son, Julian, was about to graduate from his local primary school after seven years. Seven tough years she thought.

Julian was by no stretch of the imagination an academically inclined student. In fact, quite the opposite. To make matters worse, his small circle of friends, inspired more by desperation than by choice, she thought, led him more often than not to detention classes than anywhere else.

“Good morning, Mrs Tonkin. Pleased to see you.” Ms Carpenter, the principal, smiled, as she mostly did. “What can I do for you?”

Jolted from her thoughts, Mrs Tonkin fumbled for a moment. She hated those fumbling moments.

They made her feel inadequate, just as they had throughout her childhood, a childhood dominated by the oppressive nature of her father. Guilt was in there too. Julian’s awkwardness in conversation she was sure didn’t help him much in making friends with better peers. He must have inherited that fumbling conversational trait from her.

“Oh, yes.” She stammered. “I……er,” damn it.

There I go again.

Ms Carpenter was kindly, always kindly. “Take your time.”

Once seated in Ms Carpenter’s office, and thoughts of her own awkwardness as a child no longer front and centre in her mind, words came more freely to Mrs Tonkin. In fact they burst out.

“I’m worried about Julian next year, transitioning to secondary school. He isn’t a confident kid. He gets into trouble so much and I worry about him. His father worries about him too, I think.”

Julian rarely saw his father since his parents split, acrimoniously so, several years ago. Mrs Tonkin rarely spoke with him, and, in truth, was relieved. He was so much like her father. Goodness knows why she married him. At least now she was

free of him, though popping him into this conversation right now might give her some ammunition in her quest to find the right secondary school for Julian next year.

“In what way?” replied Ms Carpenter, her tone deliberately sounding puzzled, yet reassuring in an understated way. This was not the first time that she was meeting with a parent anxious about their child’s transition to secondary schooling. In fact, somewhat to her frustration, it was an increasing phenomenon. Anxiety, as Ms Carpenter knew only too well, was surging through society, almost unchecked. The consequences for her, in her role as a school principal, were quite profound.

“Well,” began Mrs Tonkin, her confidence boosted, by Ms Carpenter’s unwavering smile.

“I’m not sure that the school to which Julian is zoned is right for him. You see most of the boys that he hangs out with are going there next year and they all get into trouble here, nearly all the time. I was hoping that Julian could get away from them.”

Mrs Tonkin paused, as much to catch her breath as to think of what to say next. Ms Carpenter’s smile had disappeared by now, replaced by a nothingness sort of expression, one which Mrs Tonkin could not read.

“Julian is a follower and he needs a fresh start. I was hoping you might be able to recommend another local government school that might suit him better.” Her voice trailed off noticeably. Ms Carpenter winced ever so slightly. Clearing her throat, knowing that she had no good news for Mrs Tonkin, Ms Carpenter attempted to deflect her concerns.

“But, it’s a great school with a wonderful student wellbeing program. Besides which, it’s our main feeder secondary school and we have a longstanding excellent transition program in operation with them.”

Mrs Tonkin remained visibly unimpressed. “He needs a break from those other boys.”

Continued from page 4 Ms Carpenter understood exactly, but there was virtually nothing within her power to assist Mrs Tonkin; not given the clarity of the enrolment procedures now in place for government. Due to rapidly rising enrolments all local secondary schools were strictly enforcing the procedures – with only one accepting enrolments from out of their zone. She wasn’t sure that Mrs Tonkin would be likely to seek to enrol Julian at that school. It was quite some distance from where he lived and the school’s declining enrolments would be of concern. Her silence prompted Mrs Tonkin; actually needled her.

“So what are our choices?”

“Well, you can always appeal Julian’s placement.”

“And what are our chances of success?” disappointment creeping as rapidly into Mrs Tonkin’s voice as was a cocktail of helplessness and frustration overwhelming the principal.

“I don’t know really,” she replied carefully, at which point the school bell rang.

“Look, I suggest you make an appointment with the principal of your son’s zoned secondary college and explain your concerns. From our end, we will certainly alert them to the challenges your son faces socially next year in moving forward.”

Ms Carpenter paused, just long enough to absorb the disappointment in Mrs Tonkin’s eyes.

“Don’t worry too much Mrs Tonkin, I’m sure that we can work this all out to Julian’s best advantage.”

Mrs Tonkin rose from her seat, shook her head and started to say something before the stumbling fumbling for words took control.

“Thank you Ms Carpenter for your time.”

Ms Carpenter saw Mrs Tonkin out, watching her crestfallen figure disappear in the distance.

Slowly she returned to her office, sat down, then almost immediately stood up, went to the staffroom, poured herself a black coffee and returned.

A flood of thoughts engulfed her as she sat quietly in the privacy of her office, doors closed.

She could empathise with Mrs Tonkin. What would she, herself, do in similar circumstances?

Probably much the same. Yet, on the other hand, as a principal of a public school in Victoria, systemic considerations could not be ignored.

What was the best advice could she give to parents, anxious to ensure the best choice of school for their child transitioning to a secondary school setting? That was a question she had asked herself many times over. Do your homework – and if your choice is a public school, your neighbourhood school is your starting point.

What sort of fit is it educationally and socially for your child? Word of mouth is valuable too – what do other families think of the school? Check the school out for yourself. It’s amazing what you can learn about a school’s culture and operations from a visit. Whatever you end up deciding, remember that no matter what school your child ends attending, there will be great times and tough times. Don’t beat yourself up too much in searching for the impossible. If only!

Her coffee finished, Ms Carpenter sighed, and turned her attention to other matters.

Adults must listen to bullied students before acting TWO of the most common approaches adults have taken to bullying among school students may not work. To do better, adults must start by listening to bullied children rather than rushing to action, say leading experts.

ADULT REACTIONS TO BULLYING CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD Professor Marilyn Campbell of the Queensland University of Technology is a leading expert on bullying, and a member of the Australian Universities Anti-Bullying Research Alliance. She said that both past and present approaches to bullying have often been ineffective.

“The most general advice to young people who were bullied used to be ignore it and walk away,” said Professor Campbell. “With the knowledge of the often devastating harm that bullying can cause we have changed our advice to say to the bullied student to tell an adult. In a school context that is usually a teacher.”

“However, bullying in schools is not significantly decreasing. Perhaps we are not responding to young people in the most effective way.”

“Instead of listening and hearing what the young person wants us to do we usually investigate and punish. This often brings more humiliation to the bullied student because of the lack of confidentiality and sometimes, if the bullying is severe, more retaliation, increasing the bullying.”

“For some time we have been suggesting that a whole school approach is required to deal with bullying, and the evidence suggests that this does help to reduce bullying, but it is not the complete story,” said Dr Spears.

“We also need to have differentiated, tiered intervention and prevention strategies: some universal information for everyone, as well as targeted and specific approaches that are tailored to the needs of particular students in that community, whether they are perpetrating or experiencing victimisation, or standing by while it happens.”

“As schools also reflect the communities around them, it is important that all aspects of each community work together to prevent bullying and support those who have been victimised. Bullying is everyone’s problem, not just a school’s. We must listen to our young people and do better to model alternative solutions to bullying, aggression and violence.”

INTERVENTIONS TO ADDRESS BULLYING Professor Phillip Slee of Flinders University is likewise a leading expert on bullying, and a member of the Australian Universities AntiBullying Research Alliance together with Professor Campbell and Dr Spears.

He noted that bullying is a public health issue impacting on everyone and detracting from the social capital of the community. “Bullying prevention is a whole of community matter – not just a matter for schools,” said Professor Slee.

“Some groups are particularly vulnerable, such as children on the autistic spectrum, those who are LGBTQI, and those with special educational needs and disabilities.”

He emphasised, also, that bullying has an economic cost to the community, and that effective interventions need to be promoted.

However, he said it was crucial that interventions proceed from a strong evidence base; while some work, others can do more harm than good.

As such, he suggested that a strong evidence base for interventions must be established before they are widely promoted.

Cranbourne East Secondary College AT Cranbourne East Secondary College, we focus on giving every student, every opportunity to exceed their potential by providing a high quality pathway to success. Empowering students to take control of their learning HAMPTON Park Secondary College is entering an exciting new phase of innovation in education under the leadership of the newly appointed Principal, Mr Wayne Haworth. The philosophy of the College has shifted to ensure that we are unrelenting in our pursuit of academic excellence facilitated by an engaging curriculum and empowered through student voice and agency.

Commencing in 2020, Year 7 students will engage in the ‘Explore’ program to support their transition into secondary school. ‘Explore’ students will study Core English/EAL, Maths, Health and Physical Education, Humanities/ Literacy Intervention and Science.

Remaining subject choices will include elective tasters from Languages, Arts, Science, Humanities and Technology to aid students in identifying and developing their talents, strengths and interests.

Students in Years 8 – 10 will participate in the ‘Enhance’ program, a tailor-made student learning program. ‘Enhance’ students will study Core English/EAL and Maths and select their remaining program from electives.

Elective subjects will include rich and authentic learning and assessment outcomes, to enable them to share and showcase their work with community groups and organisations.

Each cohort of students will select a personalised learning program with support from their Mentor Teacher, the Careers Team and their families. Student learning will be individualised, enabling students to build upon their skills and knowledge at their point of need, including accelerating into VCE or University subjects, or participating in opportunities to consolidate their learning, such as Literacy Intervention. Students will not be grouped based on their age group, instead their learning will be based on their selected interests and learning needs.

Additionally there will be significant changes to the VCAL program within the College to ensure that students are actively engaging in their community, whilst preparing for their career post school.

Highvale Highvale has a focus on enabling and empowering all the students to achieve high academic success. The college offers many opportunities for each student to reach their potential and to pathway into tertiary education.The college has a strong partnership with Monash University and Deakin University with our students having the opportunity to apply for scholarships.

Each student have the opportunity to reďŹ&#x201A;ect and set goals for improved learning outcomes by accessing feedback from learning tasks throughout the subject, attend tutoring and through individual course counselling to ensure success.

Highvale students receive high ATAR scores with many results of 40+ in all subjects across the eight Learning Areas. All the students in the 2018 Year 12 cohort received an offer into a tertiary institution for 2018. This has been made possible through the 1:1 course counselling for all Years 7- 11 students and the career program and counselling developed for each year level.

The College offers an accelerated program in Mathematics from Year 7 -12 and in English.The vertical structured curriculum program enables students to study outside their year level to be accelerated in all Learning Areas of the curriculum.

The highly recognised instrumental music program offers tuition in brass, woodwind, voice, strings, percussion, piano and guitar.

Music scholarships are available for students. Over 250 students are involved in ensembles, concert and performance bands and orchestra many of which have performed at retirement villages, community events, primary schools, Government House and the NEVR concert at Hamer Hall.

The Robotics and 3D printing program at Highvale has enabled students across year levels to exercise their creative thinking and problem solving skills through the scheduled subject classes, Robotics club, and preparation and involvement in the interschool competitions.

John Paul College celebrates a rich history of 40 years IN 1979 two single-gender schools, Stella Maris and Marianist College, merged to form John Paul College - a co-educational Catholic College in Frankston. Now in its 40th year, John Paul College is celebrating and reflecting on a rich history, while making big plans and advancements for the future.

The College celebrated and paid respect to our history with an event for Alumni and past staff, as well as a special Founder’s Day for current students, staff and families. Founder’s Day is an annual event and an important commemoration in the JPC calendar. This year, special guests included past Principals Brother Don Neff, Dr. Liam Davison and Jane Tibb.

Over the years John Paul College has evolved through the programs, curriculum, technology and opportunities we offer. Attracting nationwide media attention in the 1990’s for being early pioneers in the field when introducing notebook computers linked to the College network by radio local network (radio-LAN). Social justice initiatives flourish through the introduction of our immersion programs to the Philippines, East Timor and recently added this year, India.

University of Melbourne research on the “value add” performance of non-government education has found that Catholic schools add an average of six points to tertiary admission ranks, or ATAR scores, at the career defining end of a student’s school journey.

A major Australian Bureau of Statistics survey has found that three out of four Catholic secondary school students will go on to university.

And a Curtin University study shows how a Catholic education pays real-world dividends, with Australians who attended Catholic schools enjoying a wage premium of more than 10 per cent.

At the same time, the Curtin University research shows Catholic school graduates enjoy greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

A major part of this academic and personal success comes from the fact that when Catholic teachers walk into class they see individual students. Teaching and learning programs are based around diversity and dignity and designed to engage students at a social and emotional level.

Our Strive program is central to our vision of growing the whole child Our award-winning instrumental music program consists of over 220 students (and growing) who regularly compete (and consistently win awards) in the Victorian School Music Festivals and Generations of Jazz Festival. We have a proud tradition of performance including musicals, plays, drama ensemble performances and music concerts. Our dedicated Performing Arts team have been recognised for their excellence in being nominated for and winning several Victorian Music Theatre Guild Awards and Lyrebird Theatre Awards.

Aspiring athletes are able to hone their skills and maximise their potential in our Sports Academy program (Basketball and Netball) and the Athlete Development Program. These programs focus on enhancing student learning in the areas of Technical Skill Development; Tactical and Strategic Development; Strength and Conditioning; Injury Prevention; Match Preparation; and Recovery.

Sport and your child ONLY six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded culture that encourages children to be physically active.

People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life and evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults.

BENEFITS OF SPORT FOR CHILDREN Some of the many benefits of sport participation for children include: ■ reduced risk of obesity ■ increased cardiovascular fitness ■ healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons ■ improved coordination and balance ■ a greater ability to physically relax and, therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension (such as headache or back ache) ■ improved sleep ■ mental health benefits, such as greater confidence ■ improved social skills ■ improved personal skills, including cooperation and leadership.

Reducing inactivity may be more effective in achieving overall increases in energy levels in young children than putting the emphasis on increasing involvement in sporting activities.

Taking steps to reduce children’s sedentary time is important.

The Australian Government recommends that: ‘Children and young people should participate in at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day.’

■ ‘Children and young people should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (such as computer games, internet, TV), particularly during daylight hours.’

These recommendations are a guide to the minimum level of physical activity required for good health.

According to the Bureau of Statistics, over the 12 months prior to April 2012 in Australia, 1.7 million or 60 per cent of children aged 5 to 14 years participated in at least one sport outside of school hours that had been organised by a school, club or association.

Participation amongst boys (949,000) exceeded that of girls (727,000), both overall and within each age group category. Children aged 9 to 11 years were most likely to participate in sport (66 per cent).

The three most popular organised sports for boys in 2011 to 2012 were soccer (22 per cent of total), swimming and Australian rules football.

For girls, swimming/diving (19 per cent of total) and netball were predominant.

ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways, including: ■ Lead by example – be physically active yourself.

■ Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together.

■ Encourage your child to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on you to drive them.

■ Support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each match, cheering them on from the sidelines.

■ Set time limits on sedentary activities like computer games and television.

■ Consult with your child’s school on ways to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity.

New Sports Precinct for St John’s Regional College As part of Stage 1 of the St John’s Regional College Masterplan a new Sports Precinct will be completed for the beginning of the 2020 school year. This redevelopment will include a new FIFA accredited soccer pitch, 3 multi-purpose basketball/netball and tennis courts with all-weather roofing, athletics running track, softball pitch and resewn and irrigated football oval.

St Monica’s College, Epping ST MONICA’S College, Epping was established in 1964 as a girls’ school. This served a specific purpose at that time. In the 1970’s the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, local clergy and parishioners saw a real need for boys’ Catholic Education thus in 1978 St Monica’s College, Epping proudly became coeducational. Our school has flourished ever since.

In all of our local Primary schools (Government and Catholic) coeducation is offered. In all tertiary institutions (universities and TAFES etc.) coeducation is the only way education is provided. I argue that all education is delivered at its best through coeducation.

Why? There are many reasons why I contend that the coeducation choice Monican parents have made for their children is the right one. Being together throughout the day, feelings of comradeship and friendships develop in a natural way between girls and boys. This mutual feeling and uplifting experiences are inherently valuable to the fully rounded person. These friendships emerge through shared experiences in classrooms, from participating in shared activities outside the formal curriculum, and through shared membership in clubs and teams.

Coeducation assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other, and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially.

Truly, coeducation reflects 100% the diversity of society. Coeducation, in other words, IS the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years.

Coeducation at its Best” I believe that girls are more confident to express their views on all manner of things in their daily life in a coeducational College and exactly the same applies to boys. Students feel comfortable in whom they are and the chances are many to develop healthy and positive attitudes and self-image. Let us hope that this in turn reduces harassment and bullying.

Coeducation is popular throughout the world and a chief reason for this is that it allows for greater socialisation, wider diversity of experiences and fewer gender stereotypes for young people. This can only be healthy, good, and most desirable. It could be stated that collaboration between the sexes, not separation, fosters equality. In a coeducational setting, students are exposed to both male and female role models, students learn to lead the opposite sex in all types of situations, and finding a group of friends to match up with is easier.

There are myths associated with coeducation just as there are with single sex education. These should all be dispelled as we come down to the one, most critical reality – humans live in a coeducational world and consequently enjoying the coeducation experience in school years should form a holistic person, confident and wise.

AVID is a schoolwide program that uses research-based, best teaching and learning strategies to actively engage the student in their learning. While all students at Wyndham Central College area AVID students, it is also offered as an elective from Year 9.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM At Wyndham Central College, our Enrichment Program provides an optimal learning environment to address the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of gifted and talented students.

The program extends enrichment opportunities for students both within and beyond the classroom. All students in the Enrichment Program develop an Enrichment Project over the course of each year.

The project centres on developing an authentic product or performance, and allows students to build excellence in a real-world context. Enrichment experiences are interwoven into tutor time and the normal class timetable, with extra-curricular activities playing an important role in supporting the Enrichment Project.

SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM (SIP) The Spanish Immersion (SIP) bilingual program at Wyndham Central Secondary College (WCC) is a well-researched approach for promoting bi-literacy, bilingualism, and biculturalism for students. The underlying goal is to prepare students to be global citizens with abilities to listen, speak, read, and write in two languages. In addition SIP students develop an appreciation for different cultures in a rigorous academic program. In order to achieve this aim SIP students acquire language skills and vocabulary while completing their core subjects including mathematics, science and humanities.

Yarra Hills Secondary College YARRA HILLS Secondary College is a multicampus government secondary school in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. We have two campuses, a year 7 – 10 Campus at Mt Evelyn and a Mooroolbark Campus with both year 7 – 10 and senior (year 11/12) precincts on the one site. Current enrolments are around 900 students and have been rising over the last four years.

The Mt Evelyn Campus typically accepts students from the local Mt Evelyn area, nearby Lilydale, Silvan and towns further down the Warburton Highway in the Yarra Valley, including such areas as Wandin, Seville, Woori Yallock and beyond. Students attending this campus progress to the Mooroolbark Campus for their senior studies. Bus transport is made available to do this.

The Mooroolbark Campus directly serves the Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Croydon and Bayswater areas. Direct local transport exists linking each of these areas to the campus through either the Cambridge Rd/ Hawthory Rd bus stops at the rear of the school or Hull Rd and Mooroolbark Station near the wmain entrance.

Yarra Hills has an extensive online curriculum available through the use of ‘Moodle’, which is accessible to staff, students and parents. This provides students with 24/7 access to classwork, revision and assessment materials. As well as providing a differentiated curriculum to challenge students at all academic levels, Yarra Hills has also created an online extension program that allows students who are identified as ‘well above’ standard levels to undertake further instruction in a series of rich, open-ended learning tasks.

With the recent opening of the Yarra Ranges ‘Tech School’ Discovery Centre at Lilydale Lakeside, Yarra Hills has been one of a select group of schools to help develop and access specialist programs in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) available on the site.

Yarra Hills is renowned for providing a wide selection of pathways for all students, successfully offering a large complement of VCE studies, with students in the most recent graduating group receiving placements in a large range of post-

secondary institutions, including the coveted Medicine and Law. VET (Vocational Education & Training) and VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) School Based Apprenticeship Training is also available, with Yarra Hills being the Lead School for the atEast VCAL consortium. atEAST currently provides work for around 250 students from 10 schools across the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Yarra Hills’ students in this program regularly receive industry awards for excellence.

Yarra Hills has an extensive Performing Arts program, including several highly successful Concert Bands led by the Director of the Australian Youth Band, Mr Richard O’Toole.

These groups perform regularly across the state and in alternate years undertake an international tour. Last year’s Music Group travelled to New Zealand. Additionally, we have singing troupes and an excellent annual College Production which involves a large number of students.

The Outdoor Education Program is also renowned throughout the wider community, providing students the opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom. The College has its own buses, canoes/kayaks, diving/snorkelling gear and a full set of camping/hiking equipment.

A Scholarship Program also is offered at Year 7 level in the areas of Academic, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Sporting Excellence. Applications for these are available through the Campus Offices, or at our College Information Nights.
