Peter’s jumping for joy Berwick Probian Peter Pyle’s love of speed is about to go next level.

The Central Berwick club member has won a free skydive, courtesy of The Probian and Skydive Australia.

Peter, a self-confessed revhead, is the lucky winner of a competition open to Probus Club members and will choose which of Skydive Australia’s three Victorian sites from which to jump.

He has the choice of a tandem skydive from St Kilda to take in the spectacular city sights, from Lilydale to take in the picturesque Yarra Valley or from Barwon Heads over the Great Ocean Road.

Peter says he has always loved fast rides and relished the thought of freefalling at 200kmh, taking in views he said would “be out of this world”.

“I wouldn’t call myself a daredevil, but I am a revhead and like anything to do with speed,” he said.

“It would certainly be something to tick off the bucket list.”

At 69, Peter is not perturbed by the prospect, saying he heard of a 90-year-old jumping a year or two back.

He stays active, walking every day and playing a weekly game of golf with mates at the Berwick-Montuna course.

“I have done a reverse bungy jump on the Gold Coast, which was great. I am looking forward to it.”

I hope other Probus clubs get on board and update their first aid knowledge.

Gladice With so many organisations providing this sort of training, there will be a way for every club to get on board as Gladice said, and maybe save a member’s life. Or a grandchild, or a neighbour.

The possibilities are endless after just one morning’s training.

Spring has arrived with the wattle and all the other lovely blossoms in bloom.

There are lots of very colourful gardens to see as we do our walking how fortunate we are.

It was so pleasing at the delegates meeting to have two people come forward willing to join the committee but we need more we must have a secretary and we must have a vice-president for our annual general meeting on Tuesday 26 November.

Otherwise I may have to learn how to close the Probus Association of Victoria down and decide to which charity we will give our funds.

This is one thing that I do not want to learn and I am sure most of you do not want to see PAV closed down.

I know there are a lot of people out there with the skills to take these positions on so please consider taking one of these positions knowing that you will help PAV live on and either contact Rodney James or myself directly.

Anne Oughtibridge OAM (0422 068 493) is willing to set the wheels in motion for us to have a Craft Exhibition to show off all the fancy things that our Probians make and needs to hear from willing helpers.

RECENTLY the Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club conducted two First Aid training sessions.

As a very active club with so many outings and activities each month, the likelihood of someone needing help is an ever-present reality for our convenors. We particularly wanted our 30-plus convenors to have some training, but the courses were open to all our members.

One fear so many members expressed about doing first aid, and CPR in particular, was ‘but I can’t get down on the ground!’

Fair enough comment, but we learnt that there is so much we can do, even just making sure the surroundings are safe, asking someone to call an ambulance, and being an encouraging, caring support!

But an absolute mindblower was a very non-official way to do CPR if there are no alternatives and no-one else to help out: do it with your foot! This is not in the books, and it is not an official, approved method, but it works, and in our situations, it is a way to keep someone alive until help arrives! Either sitting, or standing with something to hold onto, a bare heel carefully placed on the sternum breastbone can do the compressions that are needed!

In one morning, we covered all essential first aid scenarios we are likely to come across, from strains and sprains to heart attacks and strokes. We were given a glove box-sized first aid book to have handy, and a certificate of completion.

It was such a success, one of the participants wrote up her reactions afterwards: I was in the first group of Ringwood Clocktower Probus members to meet at North Ringwood Community Centre to do our First Aid course. We have purchased a defibrillator and learning how to use it was not an option, but a necessity. The defibrillator is an amazing piece of medical equipment and we are very grateful to the Bendigo Bank for the donation so as to purchase it.

Our instructor John made us see the seriousness of refreshing our first aid knowledge, or for some, learning for the first time. John’s wonderful sense of humour put us all at ease and the participation from everyone was really great. First Aid methods change with time and we soon learnt what was obsolete and proceeded to learn the new methods.

We all realise the importance on being up to date with first Aid where today we need to know how to use an EpiPen, as there are so many people who have allergies to many things.

Paralympian wows club MEMBERS of the Combined Probus Club of Wantirna Heights were treated to an enthralling presentation from quadriplegic Andrew Harrison at a recent meeting.

Andrew broke his back when diving into a river in 2004 while in his late teens. He told members of the difficulties in dealing with his injuries and how he got his life back together.

After some time he tried out for wheelchair sports and found that rugby was his forte. He rose in the ranks to play for Australia, competing in the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics winning gold medals each time.

He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal “for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games“.

Andrew is an inspiring young man and already has a growing list of achievements.

He is married and has a one year old son and enjoys driving four-wheelers, cars and off-road buggies.

At the end of his presentation, there was a poignant moment when one of the club members said she had taught Andrew at his high school and how pleased she was to see him making such a success of his life.

Many members commented after the meeting that Andrew was one of the best guest speakers the club has had.

Asian gem back in business Island Paradise. The wonder of Asia. Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

Armchair Travel SRI Lanka has come to be known by many names over the years, but as of April 2019, news surrounding the island has been overshadowed by the attacks that took place on Easter Sunday.

The island was left devastated after three churches, three high-end hotels became the targets of suicide-bomber led attacks that claimed the lives of 250 nationals and injured hundreds more.

Authorities have since uncovered the details and persons involved in the attacks and arrested those responsible. However, the trending question around the world continues to be “is Sri Lanka safe�?

In the immediate aftermath of the disaster we saw many foreign governments imposing travel advisories and restrictions for travel to Sri Lanka. That created a sense of apprehension among travellers who planned to fly in and led many to cancel their holidays to the island altogether.

Four months later all these nations have completely lifted or relaxed their travel advisories to Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is safe to say that the cautionary picture portrayed around the world is in contrast to the situation on the ground.

It is also important to stress that a majority of provinces in Sri Lanka were completely unaffected by the events and life as a whole is moving forward as usual.

However, seeing as many of these communities rely on tourism the deficit of tourist numbers have had a drastic effect on their livelihoods with some of them having to close businesses completely.

As tourism is one of the main drivers of the Sri Lankan economy the April attacks have had a domino effect that has spread far and wide. The Sri Lankan people however remain hopeful. Hopeful that this too shall pass, and tourism will return to its former glory.

The immediate actions taken by the Sri Lankan Security Forces to restore normality to the island after the attacks have been

Milestone a real pearler

During an extravagant morning tea we were reminded from a fact sheet on our table of what was happening in the world in 1989, the year our club was established.

It caused much discussion!

Many and lasting friendships have been made and nurtured in the years since as members continue to provide support for each other, always under the umbrella of fun, friendship and fellowship.

The pearls were found and dusted off ready for a special celebration to mark the 30th birthday of Blackburn South Ladies Probus Club.

The Avenue Church Hall was decorated with beautiful flowers and balloons to greet members and special guests as they arrived.

We were very pleased to welcome Whitehorse Mayor Bill Bennett and his wife Carol, Probus Chairman Robert Renshaw and his wife Peggy, PAV President Rennus Crossley and Andrea Angus, who was standing in for her husband Neil, the State Member for Forest Hill.

This was the occasion to recognise the contribution made by many of our members.

Robert Renshaw presented current president Gwen Shield with a certificate acknowledging the club’s 30 year history.

Rennus Crossley then presented life membership awards to Margaret Clarke and Gwen Shield to thank them for all they have done and continue to do to serve the club and support its members.

Lastly, we were privileged to have six of our foundation members in attendance, who were recognised for their long service to the club. Val Lee-Archer, Lesley Mullins, Judy Peacock, Barbara Reid, Claire Wilkinson and Isobel Paton were very surprised and pleased to receive their certificates.

Noble Park Probus turns 35 MEMBERS celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Combined Probus Club of Noble Park at a lunch on 12 September.

The social club, known for convivial outings, holidays and gatherings for 55s and over, lunched at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough.

The function was marked with a cutting of a birthday cake by members Don and Jan Amos.

The neighbouring Sandown Probus Club also attended.

Like other Probus Clubs, the group is about fostering friendships and social

connections among retirees.

It was founded in Noble Park in 1984, later meeting in Keysborough before returning to Club Noble as its ranks grew.

Its inaugural five-day holiday was a coach trip to the Blue Mountains several decades ago.

Many interstate and country tours have followed including to the Flinders Ranges, Tasmania, Merimbula, Wagga and the Ettamogah Pub. Not to mention the countless day trips, mystery tours, coffee mornings, lunches and cinema excursions.

Vibrant club’s silver lining On Monday 2 September, the Probus Club of Bayside celebrated its 25th anniversary with local dignitaries including Mayor Michael Heffernan, the Federal Member for Goldstein Tim Wilson, the Member for Brighton James Newbury, President of Sandringham Rotary Ian Wells and a representative from Probus South Pacific, Robert Renshaw, in attendance.

Addressing more than 100 members and visitors at the Milanos function room, Mayor Heffernan congratulated the president Tamara Hellewell and the Probus Club of Bayside on achieving this remarkable milestone with such a strong membership, paying tribute to the foundation members and committees over the years which had obviously moved with the times to remain fresh, vibrant and offering real value to active retirees with friendship, fellowship and fun.

During the business session the dignitaries heard from the 12 activity leaders who plan and run monthly activities including cinema, music, woodwork, evening dine outs, walking, Mah Jongg, technology, day trips, sewing, gardens and galleries plus an annual extended trip within Australia or overseas.

Not over the hill... just yet!

THE Combined Probus Clubs from Keilor, Keilor East, Avondale Heights, Deer Park and Taylors Lakes celebrated the fourth annual lunch at the Lakes Banquet and Reception Centre in Taylors Lakes on Wednesday 26 June 2019, starting at noon and ending up at 4pm.

We had 170 Probians attending and were supported by our local Caroline Springs Rotary Club and the RSL making a total of 190, the food and service was excellent and the entertainment supplied this year by Brendan Scott was special - in fact we have booked him again for next year.

We would like to thank Helloworld Taylors Lakes, Harvey Norman Taylors Lakes and the Taylors Lake Hotel for their support and I would also like to thank our combined committee members for their efforts in providing time during the year by attending meetings and getting members to attend this very important Probus event.

Lifesaving gift shared WITH the increasing risks of an ageing population, someone’s life has the potential to be saved now that a donation of a portable defibrillator has been given to the Probus Club of Dingley Central.

Seeing as Dingley Central Probus meets once a month at the Salvation Army Kingston City building, it made sense to share the defibrillator with them. So now members of Probus and the Salvos have peace of mind, due to the generous donation from the Bendigo Bank - Dingley Village branch.

The Bendigo Bank donation was an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The unit, less formally known as a portable defibrillator, is an electronic device that can analyse a potentially life threatening event such as a sudden cardiac arrest and has the ability to treat the patient.

It can be operated by lay rescuers with minimum or no training, however a free training session was provided to a group of Probus and Salvation Army members.

At the club’s general meeting, branch manager Penelope Leonard accepted a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Bendigo Bank from the president of the Probus Club of Dingley Central, Mary Daly.

A very happy milestone THE Ladies Probus Club of Oakleigh proudly celebrated its 30th birthday recently.

The club was founded on 11th September, 1989, comprising 26 original members.

The current president, Veronica Stow, presented special badges and certificates to four ladies who have remained with the club since its inception.

The club is most grateful to these foundation members - Betty Simmons, Gwen Bennett, Shirley Kirk and Ann Koch - for all their efforts and service over 30 years.

Betty, the club’s first president, had the honour of cutting the beautiful cake!

In addition, Pat Lovegrove was awarded “life member” at the birthday celebration in appreciation of all her efforts and hard work over many years.

Today the Ladies Probus Club of Oakleigh remains strong with 63 members who enjoy participating in meetings, outings, events and trips away together.

The ladies agree that Probus has been a wonderful way to meet others in similar circumstances, to share common interests,

Early Christmas at Outpost THE Probus Club of Warragul Ranges held a Christmas in July Dinner at The Outpost Restaurant in Noojee.

The day started with the Pakenham Singers and Ukulele Club setting the mood for the afternoon and, after a lovely main course, two men dressed like Secret Service Agents arrived and shattered the relaxed vibe.

Then Donald T and Kim J U appeared.

These two imposters had the place in stitches with their antics.

Eventually, everything settled down again and dessert was served.

Club’s memorable occasion Paynesville Probus recently celebrated the 35th anniversary since the formation of the club.

The club was sponsored by the Bairnsdale Rotary Club and inaugurated on

29 August 1984.

Currently the club has a membership of 124 persons, who participate in a variety of activities on an almost weekly basis.

meeting were the president and secretary of the Bairnsdale Rotary Club, who related the history of the members involved in the establishment of the club, the relationship between Rotary and Probus and the current activities being promoted

by Rotary, particularly Farmers Relief and Rotary Bowel Scans. At the completion of the meeting 42 members retired to the Paynesville Motor Cruiser Club to enjoy some fun, food and fellowship.

Trail not to be missed The Fawkner Merlynston Probus Club’s annual bus tour proved to be a fantastic choice, as members followed the Silo Art Trail in the Mallee region, with Swan Hill as a three-night stopover. It is definitely a trail not to be missed.

A look back at an earlier time SOME Latrobe Ladies Probus, Traralgon, members recently travelled to Walhalla on a wintry but sunny day.

They started the day at the Old Post Office where they were told a little of the history of Walhalla by one of our recently inducted club members, Lyn Hodson, who volunteers there.

They explored the town and had a great meal at the hotel or cafe. After checking out the recently wool bombed train, they had a ride on the Goldfields Railway up to Thompson River and return.

A very busy day was had. There is so much to explore in Walhalla and they enjoyed what they were able to fit in.

A real charmer MARK PELLEY, the snake handler - also a very good snake charmer - came to a Greensborough Probus meeting on Monday 5 August as guest speaker.

He came with several boxes full with his collections of various types of snakes and was happy to show them off. He put snakes around his neck like a scarf, it being a winters’ day!

One lady fled from her seat, when Mark brought the first snake out of the box! The rest probably couldn’t move fast enough!

Members were spellbound while he explained about the snakes and what to do if we saw a snake, including first aid treatment.

Wowed by young choir THE St Leonards Victoria Probus Club had the great pleasure of welcoming the St Leonards Primary School choir to its July meeting.

With music teacher Sam, the attentive and appreciative audience, were wowed by a succession of modern and older songs, with

self-choreographed movements to match.

As our Probus members clapped and cheered, the students bowed, grinned and thoroughly enjoyed the accolades.

What a wonderful experience enjoyed by both the younger and older members of the St Leonards community!

Look at new sports centre A group of 37 members and friends of the Probus Club of North Ballarat had morning tea and a tour of the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre, led by administration manager Mark Valentine, on 21 August 2019.

The centre was official opened on 4 August 2019.

This $24m project was jointly funded by the Federal Government ($10m) State Government ($9m) and the City of Ballarat ($5m).

The facility has six new courts that can be used for basketball, volleyball and netball.

The courts hosted their first major game on Friday 13 September when Melbourne United took on the Illawarra Hawks.

Stage two will add four outdoor threeon-three (street ball) courts, a strength and conditioning centre and a new skin for the existing old building at a cost of $5.2 million.

Out the back of Bourke ON a crisp Saturday morning in July, 20 excited travellers from the Combined Probus Club of Monash left Mt Waverley on the Highlander Explorer Trip to the Back of Bourke with leader Chris Grafen.

Heading out of Melbourne we stopped beside Lake Nagambie for morning tea and enjoyed a picnic lunch on the banks of the Murrumbidgee at Jerilderie, made famous

by Ned Kelly, before arriving in Griffith, capital of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation area, for the night.

Day two was another long day travelling further into the New South Wales outback, passing through Hillston. Gilgunni and stopping for lunch in the oasis town of Cobar. Here we viewed the huge open cut gold mine - an amazing sight. Late afternoon, after visiting Fred Hollows grave, we arrived in Bourke on the banks of the Darling River for a two night stay.

The following morning a local guide gave us a wonderful tour of this grand old town, established in 1859 and we were treated to a fascinating horsemanship display with demonstrations of herding sheep using dogs. A definite highlight.’

In the afternoon we visited the fascinating interactive Back of Bourke Experience Museum and learnt all about the history of this historic old town and its people and enjoyed a visit to a local art gallery where several of our group made some purchases. A barbecue dinner and bush poet performance at Kidman’s Camp in the evening topped off our Back of Bourke experience.

Day four saw us heading further north where we crossed into Queensland at Hebel for lunch and then drove back into New South Wales arriving at the famous township of Lightning Ridge for the night.

On arrival a local guide gave us a very comprehensive tour around the opal fields and showed us just how rugged life is like living on the diggings.

The following morning we were taken on a guided tour through one of the disused opal mines and really experienced life underground. With free time to explore more sights in Lightning Ridge we then headed south towards Coonabarabran, Astronomy Capital of Australia, where we stayed in the foothills of the Warrumbungle Range for two nights.

Day six was a fabulous day where we explored the amazing Warrumbungles. We visited the Siding Springs Observatory, marvelled at the wonderful mountain formations from Whitegum Lookout and enjoyed a short walk through the bush.

the famous Dubbo Western Plains Zoo for several hours. We drove around his amazing site and stopped many times to view the animals up close.

Our lunch stop was at the huge Parkes Radio Telescope where we saw a very informative short film on the history of this

After lunch we drove to West Wyalong for our last night of the trip.

Returning to Melbourne on day eight we enjoyed a pub lunch at Chiltern before arriving back in Melbourne at 5.30 pm after a wonderful trip touring the outback

Impressed by castle

Enjoyable occasion

ON Wednesday 25 September, 34 Traralgon Combined Probus members ventured off to Keilor to enjoy the charm and beauty of the Overnewton Castle, many being unaware of its existence.

It was built in 1849 by William Taylor, a Scottish gentleman who decided to make his home in Australia. Taylors Lakes has been named after him.

Over the years Overnewton has undergone many renovations and additions that have all been tastefully incorporated into the original building.

The property was left abandoned for many years and when Dr Norton purchased it in the mid ‘70s, it was actually overgrown with ivy, both internally and externally.

The discovery of magnificent marble fireplaces and decorative cornices prompted him to continue renovating in order to restore it to its former glory.

Today it has become a very popular wedding venue and also host to a high tea on the first Sunday of each month.

After viewing the castle, members went to the rustic Keilor Hotel to enjoy a lovely lunch.

Thank you to Mary Admiraal for organising the outing, which was enjoyed by all.

All together now MID-WINTER can be a difficult time to attract large numbers of Probians to a function.

The wintery weather at home, depleted numbers because of those who have set sail north or overseas, often means outings need to be organised for smaller numbers.

Not so for a Christmas in July lunch which was celebrated recently in a joint venture of three Geelong area clubs: The Probus Clubs of Geelong Central, Kardinia Combined and Winchelsea and District.

None of the clubs would have attracted sufficient numbers to run the lunch alone, but collectively, they received acceptances

from 86 members.

Festivities began with warm mulled wine around an open fire and moved on to a three-course meal at Marty at Oakdene Restaurant on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Formality was reduced to a minimum, with the emphasis on the Probus three â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Just as well, as speeches would have been drowned by the bon-bon cracks, the rendition of the terrible jokes that came from them and the general chatter around the tables.

The 10 tables had been deliberately arranged to be seated with a mixture of members from each club, a decision which

was commended by those who attended.

There was an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;importantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; table, of course, on which were seated the three club presidents and their partners, together with Rotary District Probus Chair Margaret Robinson who graciously agreed to attend as a guest of the clubs.

Incidentally all three presidents were ladies, so there had to be a photograph of them wearing their Probus regalia.

The day was a huge success, with the three clubs agreeing to participate together in future outings. The event demonstrated that quite often, what cannot be achieved alone can easily be undertaken collectively.

Great view from this Seat ON 12 August, 38 members of Keilor Combined Probus went on an outing to Arthurs Seat, Dromana.

The ride on the chairlift was exciting, with a great view of the surroundings, and later we dropped in to the Rosebud RSL for a fine lunch.

Afterwards, we went on a stroll around the district, eventually arriving back at Keilor around 4.30pm.

A very enjoyable day was had by all.

The next outing, in October, will be a journey on the steam train from Maldon to Castlemaine.

Sky-high life saving outing BUNYIP Garfield Probus Club had a special outing to the Helimed base at the Latrobe Valley Hospital where we met some of the team. Ambulance Vic has other bases at Bendigo as well as Warrnambool with the main headquarters begin at Essendon.

Most helicopter call outs are for lifethreatening emergencies with a balance of mainly inter-hospital transfers.

The paramedic and the pilot that was on duty gave us a talk about their jobs, which was very informative. They then took us out to the hanger to look at the helicopter with it’s array of lifesaving medical equipment.

All helicopters carry blood products on board which can be administered to patients on the way to hospitals now, along with many other drugs and medical equipment.

Our President tried on the special winch gear that is an essential when they have a rescue in the mountains or sea.

The helicopters have the latest technology on board and are able to travel further even though they are bigger now.

We were all so surprised after seeing and hearing about what medical equipment they have on board that a patient would have a good chance of surviving on the way to a hospital.

It was a very interesting morning and there was lots of questions about so many

things which were answered by the team.

Many thanks to them.

We then had a Christmas in July lunch at the Morwell Hotel before heading home.

At our August meeting Janine and Jamie from The Paintplace give us some clues about painting and repair work we can do

around the home. They were able to answer a few questions along the way.

The Morning Melodies group have been to two more shows at the Downtowner and the walking group continue to enjoy their days out with lovely lunches after their walks.

Jolly Christmas in July The Probus Club of Glen Eira celebrated a wonderful Xmas in July at Fortnams in Sassafrass, where a great time was had by all.

Leongatha puts on a show THIS year’s annual Leongatha Daffodil Festival and Community Expo attracted thousands of people to the township in South Gippsland on the first days of spring, to celebrate the expelling of winter and the arrival of the sunshine!

The weather was exceptional as the township of Leongatha came alive over three days of events and activities, ranging from a Daffodil and Horticulture Show, a vibrant street market in the main street on the Saturday with more than 80 street stalls, amusement rides, live music, mini

golf and the popular mobile animal farm for children.

Visitors were also entertained with demonstrations of rock n roll dancing and displays of vintage cars from bygone eras.

The Rotary club of Leongatha enjoyed record entries for their 43rd Art and Photography show, which was held in conjunction with the festival.

Next year the Probus Club of Leongatha intends to welcome Probus Clubs to this premier event showcasing South Gippsland at its best!

The club has already commenced planning towards promoting this beautiful area and activities for fellow Probians who may wish to visit the festival as part of their club’s tours and outings program.

Silver lining on birthday fun for Woodlands club THE Woodlands Ladies Probus Club of Sunbury celebrated its 25th birthday on 7 August 2019 with a party at Barringo Food and Wine Centre, New Gisborne.

The club was formed on this date in 1994 when it was overwhelmingly decided to be a “Ladies Only” club and our club colour was to be green.

The birthday party was attended by five inaugural members, namely Fairlie Mann, Dolly Causer, Pat Maplesden, Pat O’Meara and Ann Williams, who cut the delightful birthday cake.

These five ladies, along with other ladies who have been members for 20 years and 10 years, were presented with certificates of appreciation for their involvement with the club as active members and/or committee members.

Beverly Connor and Elaine Stock, who had travelled from Queensland and Gippsland respectively.

A great day with wonderful food and wonderful company was enjoyed by all, certainly fulfilling the motto of Probus Friendship, Fellowship and Fun.

Mixing with legends ALTHOUGH it is now officially Spring, with buds bursting and blue skies enticing us out of doors, the day we chose to venture to the Woodlands Historic Homestead and Park in Greenvale was not a warm sunny Spring day.

However we were cheered by a scrumptious morning tea of the largest fluffiest scones most of us have ever seen.

Piled high with jam and cream and eaten in beautifully restored rooms filled with photos and memorabilia of famous racing horses and their achievements, and warmed by blazing open fires, we were then ready to face the chilly outdoors.

Living Legends the Home of Rest for Champion Horses is based at Woodlands in Greenvale. The homestead was built in 1843, and is a rare example of a large pre-constructed timber kit house brought from Britain. Over the years it has been extended and restored.

Retired horses such as Might And Power, Rogan Josh, Who Shot the Barman and Prince of Penzance who won the Melbourne Cup in 2015 ridden by Michelle Payne, along with many others now live at Woodlands, which is listed with Heritage Victoria.

Living Legends is a not-for-profit organisation and relies on donations and bequests to raise the half a million dollars annually to maximize the benefits to local and overseas visitors of this historic property, and to look after these magnificent horses in their retirement.

The gardens, which are attended to by willing volunteers, are colourful, with magnolias planted in the 1840s and many large trees planted during the period 18891917 by the owners of that time.

After a warming lunch at the Sunbury Bowls Club, a local tourist guide joined our coach and conducted a tour around Sunbury starting with Rupertswood Mansion the “Birthplace of the Ashes”, quite relevant at this time.

Unfortunately the Mansion is no longer open to the public as it now a school, however we could admire the beautiful building and the extensive grounds in a drive-by. Then up the hill to Caloola. Built in the 1860s as an Industrial School (orphanage,) and then becoming Sunbury Hospital for the Insane, many of the lovely old blue stone buildings are being used

THE Woodlands Ladies Probus Club of Sunbury decided to enjoy Christmas in July without the frantic rush associated with Christmas in December.

The fun-filled meeting included the best decorated table and of course there was a prize of White Christmas and Rum Balls.

All of the members joined in the spirit of the day by dressing up and at the conclusion of the meeting the ladies were give a mini decorated plum pudding which was followed by lunch of Christmas fare.

Celebrated 2015 Melbourne Cup winner Prince of Penzance. now as schools, or places for artistic and other organizations. A much happier place nowadays.

Touring the Murray-Darling SO keen were the 39 travellers from the Essendon Central Probus Club, the bus was packed and ready to leave Cooper Street at 6.55am.

Our driver was Jay from Hutchinson’s Bus Lines from Birregurra.

First stop was morning tea at Ravenswood, then we stopped at Wycheproof for lunch.

An afternoon stop at Ouyen and then it was onto Wentworth.

Whilst it is a fair way from Melbourne, the actual trip was quite pleasant, interesting and picturesque.

On arrival at the Darling Junction Motor Inn, we were greeted by the motel staff and Linton and Sandra from Murray/Darling Tours.

Everything was well organised with settling into our respective rooms.

Dinner was at the Commeala Sporting Club and we were back at the motel by 8.30pm to rest for a busy schedule ahead.

The following three days were full-on we did so much, saw so much, supported the local economies, did not starve and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Some highlights were the visit to Orange World. How entertaining was Mario and his tractor train ride through the orange grove?

The two-hour cruise on the Paddle Steamer “Melbourne” was relaxing and interesting in going through the Lock.

The trip to the Loxton Pioneer Village in South Australia was interesting - the bus was checked for fruit but being the good people were are, we had left all our oranges

back at the motel.

I have never seen so many emus in the paddocks on the way to Loxton.

The Almond Hut were pleased to see the bus pull up - needless to say, we bought the shop out (well, almost!).

Strangely enough, I do not think the Angston Winery did so well - we tasted a lot but I am not sure if we bought much. I may be wrong.

The Military Museum was interesting, as was

the old Wentworth Gaol and the Folk Museum.

The Varapodio Olive Estate was a popular visit - we learnt about olive oil production, tasted and bought the local produce - did we ever!

The final event of the trip was the dinner cruise on the “Rothbury” - three hours cruising the Murray at night, enjoying good food, good music and floor show, some members danced the night away - didn’t they Eunice and Ray and Rex!

And the President and the Treasurer rocked the boat doing the Hokey Pokey!

The trip home was comfortable with a lunch stop at Charlton, and before we knew it at 5.10pm on Friday, we were back at Cooper Street.

What a wonderful trip we had. Our thanks to Jay for his faultless driving and to Linton and Sandra who looked after us so well.

Club’s future is assured FUN, friendship and fellowship are the basis of Probus and Pakenham Probus club members are certainly continuing in this way.

The club recently inducted new members Cherril O’Donnell, who has already joined in some events, and Paul and Lorraine O’Keefe, who were members of Noble Park Probus for some 20 years.

So the club is certainly looking forward to a happy future.

This was also underlined when longstanding members received their long service pins, namely Heather Farrell 25 years and Elwyn Alexander 20 years.

The club is just about to celebrate its 30th anniversary and a sub-committee has been busy working on every detail to ensure that the day is happy and successful.

A number of Probians from Pakenham East and Pakenham Central will be attending, as well as Joan Vogels OAM, who will represent the Probus Association of Victoria.

The club is taking a tour to the Silos just after the anniversary and plans are underway for the annual holiday, which next April will be to Albury and various other places along the Murray River.

Future proof medical care THE recent Royal Commission into Aged Care has found that older Australians are failing to plan their future care and prepare for a time where they are unable to communicate due to dementia, illness or accident.

Given that half of us will be too unwell to make our own end-of-life decisions it makes sense to plan ahead, rather than leave it to chance and for others to decide for you.

Stimulate the brain cells RESEARCHERS are seeking volunteers to investigate the benefits of stimulating brain cells to improve thinking and memory in people with Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

The Epworth Centre for Innovation in Mental Health (ECIMH), a Monash University and Epworth HealthCare research centre, is examining whether gentle brain stimulation can improve the cognitive symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, and in people who meet criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI refers to a decline in memory that does not impact on daily functioning.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation which uses a magnetic pulse to stimulate brain cells. A coil is placed on the participant’s head whilst they are seated comfortably in a chair, with the magnetic field increasing activity in the cells underneath the coil. TMS has been used for over 20 years in the treatment of depression, and has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for that condition.

The centre is also investigating the benefits of gentle brain stimulation delivered in the comfort of your own home for treating MCI and mild Alzheimer’s disease. Transcranial alternating current stimulation, or tACS, is a type of electrical brain stimulation that aims to restore the altered patterns of brain cell activity that is typical in disorders with cognitive impairments.

The trials are being led by Associate Professor Kate Hoy, a Clinical

Neuropsychologist, and Professor Paul Fitzgerald, a Consultant Psychiatrist.

Eligible participants need to between 50 and 95 years of age, with a diagnosis of

Spreading the word A small group of Puffing Billy volunteers has been busy spreading the word about the popular railway as part of a speaker panel that has presented at over 1500 clubs, groups and events since its inception in the late 1980s.

One member, Don Horsburgh, has been on the panel since 2000 and has given more than 640 presentations to around 40,000 Victorians during that time.

“I’ve been volunteering at Puffing Billy since I retired in 1991 and have had many roles including a booking clerk, station master, retail assistant and managing special projects like the ‘Saving Puffing Billy’ book,” Don said.

“In 2000, I joined the speakers’ panel so I could share some of my knowledge and passion with others in our community, before taking over the coordinator role in 2004. I really enjoy getting out there and meeting people. Everyone loves Puffing Billy and people are always excited and enthusiastic to learn about its history and operations.

“We volunteer our time to speak at service clubs like Rotary and Probus, retirement villages, historical societies, schools, charity and not-for-profit groups, libraries, seniors groups, special interest groups and on community radio. You name it, we have probably presented for them!

“Puffing Billy has such a great story to tell, from its beginnings in the 1900s, its fight to survive closure after the 1953 landslide, and its grand return to Gembrook, to the future plans that will see Puffing Billy grow into the future. We particularly enjoy speaking at schools and

getting young people interested in the railway,” he said.

The Puffing Billy speakers’ panel is available to provide free talks throughout the metropolitan and country areas of Victoria and presentations can be adapted to suit the needs and interests of a group.

Groups who host a speaking event are also offered a substantial discount for future travel on one of Puffing Billy’s first class heritage dining carriages, where they can enjoy a Steam and Cuisine Luncheon while taking in the picturesque views from the train.

Toilet seat solution THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler.

“It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said.

“The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features,” she said.

Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl.

“It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”.

When villages unite

on Balmoral’s newly refurbished, pennant grade bowling green - indoor bowls in the multi-purpose room and a rummikub tournament in the heated comfort of the Balmoral lounge.

Some chose to relax by the fire and enjoy time with new friends. The atmosphere was jovial, fun and allinclusive, with just a splattering of healthy competition between villages!

At midday, residents made their way to the spacious Balmoral dining room for a well-earned lunch.

Balmoral’s famous ‘sliders’, cooked fresh on site, were a popular choice.

Like Greenways, Balmoral has a fully-

appointed kitchen which serves residents regular (and enticing) meals during the week.

With food served, the room was abuzz with people socialising, meeting new friends and sharing stories from the morning’s events.

Greenways visitors welcomed the opportunity to tour the village, as their hosts opened the doors to their beautiful villa units and apartments.

As with Greenways, homes are fully refurbished at the owner’s expense before a new resident arrives so incoming residents enjoy brand new fittings, floor coverings and freshly painted surfaces throughout.

The Balmoral Men’s Shed was a popular destination, with members of the woodwork group showcasing their incredible facilities.

The croquet lawn, DVD library, recreation area, and beautifully landscaped grounds also impressed.

It was such a special day to see the two villages come together.

Both villages have been privately owned (by the same owners) for more than 35 years.

Part of the appeal for residents is the owner’s active involvement and care for their communities. And this day was no exception, with managing director Robin Forster on hand to formally kick-off the festivities.

Live well with choice FROM his first visit, Derek Clapton had a good feeling about the Uniting AgeWell residence his mother June now lives in. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It had a nice atmosphere and the staff seemed caring,â&#x20AC;? he said.

June moved into care after displaying early signs of dementia. Seven years on, Derek said he feels reassured that his mother is being properly cared for. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mum wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t looking after herself and had been losing weight.â&#x20AC;? Then, a heart attack forced his hand.

It is never an easy decision to move a family member into care, and Derek says the transition was not easy for his mother. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It took her a few months to settle in.

The staff were great, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come to appreciate their expertise. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made a real difference to Mumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now she seems so happy. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m absolutely reassured that she is being cared for. These days Mum is putting on weight, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to watch that,â&#x20AC;? said Derek with a smile.

June Clapton, who is about to turn 93, is looking better than ever, according to her family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mum seems happy and that is what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about,â&#x20AC;? added Derek.

Clubs donate to help out HEALESVILLE’S Probus and Senior Citizens clubs made a donation of $255 to Healesville Inter-church Community Care Inc (HICCI) on Tuesday 25 June.

Speaking at a presentation, president of the Healesville Ladies Probus Club Val Styles said: “On behalf of the two ladies probus clubs and the senior citizens, we’d like to present HICCI with this cheque. And I’m

sure HICCI will be able to put it to great use.”

HICCI executive office Alison Gommers was thankful for the generous donation.

HICCI aims to provide practical care and support to the community of Healesville and Yarra Glen in times of crisis, emergency or personal need.

“In the last month we’ve had so many more people come in,” Ms Gommers said.

“We’ve had a couple hundred more requests for food and there are a lot more homeless people who are coming our way because of the cold weather.

“So we’re trying to do our best to help them and keep them as comfortable as possible.”

Secretary of the Healesville Senior Citizens Club Ken Fewster explained that the money came as a result of a recent

concert hosted at the club and from fundraisers from the two probus clubs.

“It was $255 left over, and probus groups aren’t allowed to make profits so we decided to give it to HICCI, who do so much for the community.”

The donation was made by the Healesville Senior Citizens Club, Healesville Ladies Probus Club and the Valley Ladies Probus Club.

Rock the boat this summer LAST summer Searoad Ferries launched a new summer event, Rock the Boat, a unique three-hour sail around the bay with live music, continuous canapes and a welcome drink on arrival.

Companions given top care Vets&Pets Christine Stankowski, Volunteer Engagement Manager THERE’S no denying it, animals bring colour to our lives. Whether they are offering comfort, or making us laugh, the day is never dull with an animal around.

However, some of us are not able to make the full-time commitment to a pet.

Lifestyles vary and circumstances can change quickly. Many value the freedom to travel for long periods without the worry of organising care for a beloved furry friend.

At Lort Smith we believe this should not be the reason you miss out on all the joy that comes with animal companionship.

There is such thing as a part time pet carer - we call them foster care volunteers.

Thousands of animals are surrendered to animal welfare organisations each year.

Lort Smith rehabilitates and rehomes around 850 companion animals every year.

They vary from stray litters of kittens and puppies, to pets that can no longer be cared for, through no fault of their own.

A number of these animals require respite prior to adoption to recover from surgery, put on weight, or simply spend extra time in a home environment. Foster periods are flexible and can range from a few days to several months.

Animal welfare organisations like Lort Smith provide foster carers with food, bedding, bowls, toys and all relevant care information needed. We also provide unlimited advice and support as well as all veterinary costs associated with the animal while in foster care.

As a volunteer foster carer you are asked to provide animals with a safe, secure, clean and comfortable environment. Some animals might require additional monitoring or medication especially if they are recovering from surgery.

You will also need to ensure you have appropriate transport for your foster animal, as they might need additional vet appointments while in your care.

Modern life can be hectic, you can tailor a rewarding companionship that works with your lifestyle. If this is something you think might benefit from, contact your local animal welfare organisation for more information.

Euphemisms have been with us for centuries and they have served a useful purpose in covering any eventuality.

Take age for instance. Forget about replacements for those rude words that children used to write on toilet walls until the words lost their impact. The biggest impact on human sensibilities these days can come from using the wrong word to describe someone of advancing years.

Old is not a word people think much about, until they see “advancing years” advancing. Then they try hard to think about something else. Some people have thought about other words for old that don’t sound, well, so “old”.

About 10 years ago the president of a retirees’ organisation told me that a newspaper with which I was associated had incorrectly reported on the Year of the Elderly.

“It is not the Year of the Elderly,” he said. “In fact, many people get upset at the use of that word.” I promised I would pass on the message.

I can recall that many years ago some states had Old People’s Week until old people objected at the word old.

Then we had a Senior Citizens’ Week, but someone said to me he didn’t like being called a senior citizen because “it makes me feel old”.

At a time when people are fighting racism, sexism and ageism, some communities have decreed that their “citizen of the year” has to be someone no older than 65.

What is old? John Ayto quoted American financier Bernard Baruch as saying “old age is always 15 years older than I am”.

My Word Laurie Barber But whether we talk about advancing years, seniors, seasoned, in our dotage or in God’s waiting room, we can’t escape the meaning, try as we might.

Former Sydney Morning Herald columnist Alan Peterson, when retirement was looming, commented: “Please just call me old when you think that is the right description. But, I beg of you, not retiree.”

One dictionary said of old: “Used in a negative way for something not useful any longer.” Other dictionaries are a bit kinder.

Now, as for old, how about chronologically gifted?
