By Brendan Rees Spring is in air and young and old green thumbs are invited to spend some time at Berwick Neighbourhood Centre's community garden.

A free gardening workshop will be held at the High Street centre from 10am to 11.30am on Saturday 14 September.

And a special guest Morgan Koegel from 3000 Acres will be on hand to provide some handy gardening tips.

The garden's Living Connected Gardens project was made possible thanks to funding from the State Government's community grants program, Pick My Project.

Judge Hampel said the case "remained unexplained" as to why she procured the man purportedly known as 'Joe' to help her make demands after he had fleeced her of $243,000 three years ago.

When she was interviewed by police she "frankly admitted demanding money from him," Judge Hampel said.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Hampel said: "This shameful, disgraceful and wicked conduct."

"It undermines the right for victims of sexual offences to be treated with trust and respect when they come forward and make allegations of rape."

The court heard Hinton was living in Dubai when met her husband but after his death in 2013 she suffered "loneliness and isolation".

Hinton later learned she had been swindled of joint assets in India after his death.

The court also heard Hinton had lost more than $260,000 to online scammers overseas including one from an online dating site.

As a result, this left her "poor and vulnerable," Judge Hampel said."You demanded money from your victim out of a desire to benefit yourself," Judge Hampel said.

In sentencing, Judge Hampel took into account her age, previous good character, depression and unlikeliness to offend again.

She was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order.

A Narre Warren woman on a disability pension who tried to swindle thousands of dollars from a lover she met on an online dating site has avoided jail.

Beatrice Hinton pleaded guilty to one charge of blackmail in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 6 September.

The 61-year-old's "wicked conduct" began when she threatened to falsely report her online lover to police for raping her if he didn't hand over $30,000 in January 2018, the court heard.

Within a week of meeting the man, Hinton asked the man to marry him because she did not want to have sex before marriage.Over the next month, the pair continued text messaging and met for consensual sex.

But things became sour when Hinton asked to borrow $20,000 from him to cover legal fees in selling a house overseas, Judge Felicity Hampel said.

When he refused, the demands continued.

She then asked the victim to deposit $6,000 into her bank account which he again refused, the court heard.

The court was told Hinton, who migrated to Australia from Kuwait, then threatened the man she had a doctor's report about their sexual encounters.

At this point, she gave her lover one last option to transfer her the money by the next morning or otherwise be reported to police, the court heard.

When this attempt failed, Hinton used a former lover whom she met online to help her

By Brendan Rees Two not-for-profit hubs helping the Casey's most vulnerable are struggling to cope with demand and will work closely with Casey council to discuss details of newly funded sites.

Casey North Community Information and Support Service's lease has expired with their tenure uncertain while Cranbourne Information and Support Service needs to expand its floor space.

Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon successfully moved a motion at a 3 September council meeting proposing interim accommodation measures for the two hubs.

Council will find ways of funding Casey North CISS's request to relocate from Victor Cresent in Narre Warren to a larger office in Verdun Drive in Narre Warren - with a pledge of providing more than $1.3 million over five years including refurbishment and rent.

Another $1.3 million from council will aim to upgrade the old shire officers and post office building in Cranbourne which connects the existing Cranbourne CISS building - allowing it to more space.

"These problems need a solution and cannot wait five years or more," Cr Stapledon said.

The two hubs, which offer referrals and crisis support services were "growing beyond capacity," she said.

"Years of growth have put pressure on these information and support services and their buildings are too small to keep up with the demand.

"We acknowledge the absolute fantastic job that they do," Cr Stapledon said.

"Most people coming to CISS receive assistance for more than one matter, and the need for our services increases annually," she said, adding their service helped nearly 35,000 in the year to June.

"With an extended facility, our one-stopshop capacity will increase; we will be able to offer a free community meeting space, and expanded service delivery such as family violence services and services for refugees.

"Additionally - we have outreach services co-located with us who also see clients for crisis housing, counselling and other specialist services," Ms Petrides said.

Ms Petrides said they had limited space with no capacity to hold meetings, deliver services each day, or store essential items.

"This is wonderful news for our local community and we thank the mayor, councillors and the various council staff for all their work on this project."

It also said the Cranbourne project was less urgent due to the tenure security of the council owned building.

Council says future building options will be explored while the interim measures were in place.

A report is expected to come back to council in December.

False alarm at hospital

Mayor walks the walk for needed housing

Christine Ritchie's 81-year-old father is worried about how he will continue to look after her brother Anthony, who lives with disability. medical alarm so he can't do as much for Anthony anymore, so he's very concerned about his future," said Christine.

"It's only recently, after a health scare, that dad's been able to get fulltime carers to come in, but before that he was doing it all on his own, including getting him ready for bed and showering him."

Both Anthony and Christine's elderly father have suffered falls recently, making it unsafe for Anthony to remain in the home and extremely hard on their father to care for him.

"I don't know what to do, he wants to stay at home with my dad, but it's not always going to

be possible," said Christine.

Cr Stapeldon invites members of the community to join her in the walk for a worthy cause, which will see her visit community groups, businesses and local charities over the period before finishing at the Doveton Show.

"Please join me between 14 and 22 September, and remember that every dollar counts, so if you are in a position to spare a little bit of money, we welcome all donations to support the wonderful initiative that is Project 28," Cr Stapeldon said.

"I would love to see people from all areas of the community get behind this cause, as not only is this something dear to my heart, but the challenges faced by people who live with a disability, as well as their carers, is something everyone should be aware of," Cr Stapeldon added.

Christine praised Cr Stapledon for taking up the opportunity to promote the project, saying the supported accommodation units would be an ideal outcome for her family.

"They're built to the person and most importantly for us, they would be close to home," Christine added.

A smoking toaster in the lunchroom at St John of God Hospital in Berwick triggered a fire alarm on Monday morning, 9 September.

Firefighters from Berwick, Hallam, Beaconsfield fire brigades received a call about 11am where they found the toaster causing the problem.

"Just a small cooking incident inside so nothing bad," a Berwick fire brigade spokesperson said.

There was no damage and the hospital did not have to be evacuated.

Firefighters cleared the scene within 15 minutes.

Light pole fixed at Casey ARC Casey Council has made repairs to a light pole near Casey ARC after discovering a loose bolt nut.

It comes after a member of Casey ARC reported the hazard to council.

Casey manager of city presentation David Richardson said an inspection found a rag bolt nut was not completely flush as it was sitting on a lip of concrete.

"We had to grind the thin bit of concrete away to allow the nut to be tightened," he said.

"Council has repaired the light pole near Casey ARC and contacted the resident to advise that the works had been completed."

The lack of supported accommodation facilities for adults living with disabilities is taking its toll on carers and parents, with thousands left with no option but to live in unsuitable homes lacking vital supports.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapeldon is taking a step towards helping families in these situations, pulling on the walking shoes to treck up to 10 kilometres each day between Saturday 14 September and Sunday 22 September to raise money for the Wolfdene Foundation's Project 28 Initiative.

The project 28 initiative seeks to address the current shortfall of over 28,000 households Australia wide for people living with a disability and aims to create 28 supported accommodation units by 2028.

For Cranbourne resident Christine Ritchie and her family, awareness and fundraising for new supported accommodation facilities would provide great relief.

Christine's brother Anthony lives with a disability and upon the death of their mother, Anthony's care was up to their 81-year old father who is concerned about how he will care for his son in the future.

Four teenagers from Casey have been charged with armed robbery and robbery with police also finding an unloaded firearm at the time of their arrest.

The boys, a 17-year-old from Cranbourne West, and 15-year-old from Clyde North, and a 15-year-old boy from Cranbourne, and a 16-year-old boy from Hallam were arrested in a Commodore with allegedly stolen plates on the Eastern Freeway at 9pm on Thursday 5 September.

They were among six youths arrested in the car in Kew following a joint police operation of Box Hill Embona and Dandenong Southern Metro Crime Team.

Police have linked the youths to a series of assault and robberies in and around Wright Street Clayton, between 7.30 and 8.30pm on 5 September.

During the arrests police allege an unloaded firearm was found nearby to the Commodore.

It is alleged they targeted pedestrians and stole phones, wallets and bags, police say.

A 36-year-old man from Clayton and a 21-year-old woman from Cheltenham, received minor injuries during the alleged robberies.

The other victims, a 22-year-old man from Clayton, a 20-year-old man from Rowville, and a 21-year-old man from Glen Waverley were not injured.

The four Casey youths as well as a 17-yearold boy from Collingwood and 15-year-old boy of no fixed address have been charged with armed robbery and robbery and will appear before a Children's Court at a later date.

Back to school for a day

By Brendan Rees It was back-to-school for Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO, Chris Buckingham as he donned the principal's mantle on Wednesday 4 September.

He stepped out of his normal day job and into Hillsmeade Primary School in Narre Warren South for the 19th annual Principal for a Day event.

Mr Buckingham said the opportunity offered a new perspective on the valuable work of state schools.

"Being involved in the Principal for a Day program offers an insight into the future of education and will enable us to work together, share skills, and build an ongoing relationship," Mr Buckingham said.

He visited classes, spoke to students and teachers, met with parents and took part in a number of daily activities.

Garages gear up for sales, on the trail of a bargain It’s time to reuse, rethink and recycle when the Garage Sale Trail (GST) comes to town on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October.

By Brendan Rees The rain didn't deter gardening enthusiasts from taking part in a plant sale at Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick on Saturday 7 September.

This year's Casey Garden Expo was cancelled due to rainy weather but those keen to brave the cold enjoyed a plant sale as well as a barbecue put on by the Friends of Wilson Botanic Park Berwick.

Alex Smart, president of the Australian Plants Society - Wilson Park Botanic (APSWPB) said most growers were happy with the turn-out of people although sales were down from last year.

"It was cold and windy in the morning, but we and the plant sellers consider that a fairly common occurrence for a Melbourne spring day," he said.

"Loyal buyers travelled from Gippsland and Seaford as well locals have learned that sellers offer some wonderful Australian plants

"The wonderful Friends of Wilson Botanic Park strongly support us with men labouring from 7am to bring trestle tables, chairs, signs, while their ladies cooked egg and bacon sandwiches for the sellers and volunteers," Mr Smart said.

In a statement on its website Casey Council said it apologised for any inconvenience caused following the event's cancellation.

Fundraiser stepped up

Calls to upgrade ‘worst’ road

By Danielle Kutchel Year 12 students and their teachers from Cranbourne East Secondary College have sore feet but full hearts after exceeding their fundraising target for White Ribbon.

On Tuesday 27 August a group from the school ran in teams non-stop for six hours around the school oval, to raise funds for the White Ribbon Foundation.

Teacher Kellie Friso said the group raised more than $800 - well in excess of their initial $500 target.

In total the group ran 250km on the day, she said, but the sore feet were worth it for the worthy cause.

By Brendan Rees A resident says a gravel section of Thompsons Road in Clyde North has become so bad his wife's car is constantly getting damaged.

Ankit Mistry says it's only a matter of time before the road between Soldiers Road and Bells Road caused a serious accident but Casey Council assures the road will be upgraded.

The Clyde North resident said the road was falling part and being damaged by rain - with conditions getting "worst day by day."

He said the tyres of his wife's car, a Honda Civic, were "almost gone" as well as other damage worth about $1,500."I can't even sell it .. there's no point in buying a new car at the moment until they fix the road."

Mr Mistry says the road continued to worsen as more trucks used Thompsons Road as construction of new estates got underway in the fast growing area.

Parents also used the road to drive their kids to nearby schools including Berwick Chase Primary School, Rivercrest Christian College, and Hillcrest Christian College, Mr Mistry said.

He added: "This is the quickest route you can take if you want to access these schools else you have to take Grices Road which will add another 30 minutes if you are driving from Clyde North."

Mr Mistry said he contacted Casey Council but was told "there is no timeline or projects" assigned to the road.

"We are aware of the pressure that the rural gravel roads are under from construction traffic while the development of new estates are underway," Mr Turner said.

"Roads will be built as part of estate developments, however the timing of when that occurs is dependent on the timing and progress of each development.

"Until the roads are built, we've increased our maintenance regime. Thompsons Road is inspected each week and graded, if required.

"Council is actively working with developers in the area to secure the delivery of this road upgrade in the short term," Mr Turner said.

The upgrade will be part of council's Clyde Development Contributions Plan.

School bomb threat hoax Hundreds of frantic parents gathered outside Casey Stadium in Cranbourne East to pick up their children following a reported bomb scare at neighbouring schools on Monday 9 September.

It’s understood students and staff were rushed out of Marnebek School, Cranbourne East Secondary College and Casey Grammar School about 12.30pm - while messages were sent to parents urging them to pick up their children from Casey Stadium at New Holland Drive where the entrance was guarded by police.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the schools were evacuated as a precaution while police performed safety checks.

“The areas have since been deemed safe and police have cleared the scene,” the spokesman said.

Parent Stacey, who asked not to use her surname, said she received a message from Marnebek School via the school’s phone app about 12pm saying to pick up her 10-year-old daughter.

“They didn’t say what it was until I got there to pick her up,” she said. “There was police, people checking licences.”

Stacey said the students were told to leave their belongings behind at school before being ushered to the stadium.

“My daughter who has anaphylaxis, her

EpiPen was in her bag. They were left at the school.

“They had the sirens going at school, evacuating them so they were a bit scared,” she explained.

She said parents had to show identification before children were brought to them individually.

“They were keeping the kids calm ... you had to have ID. There was apparently some parents that had issues with that but I didn’t.

“I can’t speak for the other schools but Marnebek were handled very well,” Stacey said.

In a Facebook post, parent Kerry Brown said she received a message to collect her daughter which read: “Police are conducting safety checks at a number of schools in Cranbourne today (9 August). The schools have been evacuated as a precaution and the investigation is ongoing.”

An Education Department spokesperson said following advice from Victoria Police, Marnebek School, Cranbourne East Secondary College and Casey Grammar School were evacuated.

“The safety of children and students was always our first priority,” the spokesperson said.

“Parents have been informed and asked to meet and collect their children from Casey Basketball Stadium.”

Casey Grammar did not wish to comment.

Bag full of stolen goods

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drug-addicted woman found with a cocktail of drugs, hand tools and stolen goods from cars has been arrested near a Fountain Gate shopping centre loading dock.

Laura Resasco, 24, who was on a community corrections order (CCO) at the time, was found with a heavy handbag of goods by police about 11.45pm on 27 August.

After spending 15 days in remand, she pleaded guilty to drug, theft and deception charges at Dandenong Magistrates' Court.

From the bag, police seized heroin, prescription tablets and methamphetamine, the court heard on 10 September.

There were also purses, cash and credit cards recently stolen from three cars in Rowville, Frankston and Pearcedale in the previous two days, police told the court.

One of the bank cards had been used to buy more than $400 of goods from four service stations on 26 August.

Resasco was also found with stolen Medicare cards, a traffic controller licence and hand tools including a spanner, a vacuum suction cup and a lock-breaking device.

Initially giving a false name, Resasco claimed she'd been given the handbag by a "Kristie" from Narre Warren. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Though the bag was heavy, Resasco didn't know what was inside, she told police. She denied stealing the bag's contents.

Her lawyer told the court an "ashamed" Resasco had time to "clear her head" after a "harrowing" remand period.

Resasco had started her CCO in April in a "motivated" fashion but was influenced by "negative peers" into a heroin relapse and reoffending, the lawyer said.

"The (CCO) order didn't become a priority in her life."

Resasco was said to possibly have posttraumatic stress disorder, the court heard. A subsequent MARS assessment by Corrections staff however found mental health treatment was unnecessary.

Magistrate Sharon McRae told Resasco she needed to get "back on track" after making "a mess" of her first CCO. Resasco was convicted and jailed for 15 days - already served in remand.

She was placed on a new 12-month CCO with drug treatment and judicial monitoring.

Her existing CCO was extended to 18 months, also with judicial monitoring.

She was ordered to provide a DNA sample to police.

Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteers responded to a call for help after a tree fell on a vehicle in Cranbourne East on Monday morning, 9 September.

Unit volunteer Bryce Wickham said strong winds had uprooted the large tree on Mayfield Road but luckily no one was injured.

"The home owner said that he'd woken to the sound of the strong winds but was then surprised to hear a very loud thud," Mr Wickham said.

"When we saw the damage, we knew exactly what had caused that loud thud - it was the very large tree lying across the home owner's car and precariously leaning on the house."

The car wasn't so lucky with a smashed windscreen and two large dents on the roof.

Mr Wickham said after assessing the area for safety hazards, they removed the tree.

It has been the second time in weeks that Narre Warren SES have been called to a job where the storms have caused uprooting of trees.

Narre Warren SES also responded to an incident on Sunday evening, 8 September where a van had collided with a tree on Dee Way Road in Narre Warren.

SES volunteer Sue Brauner said the van had collided with the tree causing the tree to split and collapse on the road about 10.40pm.

"It was very apparent that the tree was a hazard and needed to be safely cleared away," Ms Brauner said.

"After a solid two hours of cutting the tree in torrential weather conditions, the job was complete and we could head back to the unit."

On Saturday night, 7 September SES volunteers were called to help Victoria Police and Highway Patrol by providing lighting following a fatal crash in Hallam where a car, travelling on Apollo Drive, struck the rear of a parked truck just after 9.30pm, killing the male driver of the car.

Applications are now open for Casey Council's 2019-20 Training and Equipment Grants program, with funding of up to $1,000 available for community groups.

"I would encourage anyone eligible for this funding to submit an application, as the extra money can go a long way in upskilling and preparing your volunteers and equipping your group with everything you need to succeed," Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said.

"The funding from this grant can go towards training for group members and volunteers, such as first aid, leadership development and coaching, or for the purchase of equipment needed to help your service operate effectively.

"Council is committed to supporting clubs, community groups and organisations in the delivery of local programs and events that promote a sense of belonging and inclusion across Casey, and help residents to be healthy, active and engaged in community life," Cr Stapledon said.

Guidelines for the grants are available Council's website including eligibility. Applications close 5pm on Thursday 3 October and will be assessed against a set of criteria, which can be viewed on council's website.

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power.

"We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win.

I love a good chat, so everyone knows everything about me already.

What's the best thing about Alkira Secondary College?

The Students, their confidence's with life, they are so willing to "tell you how things should be". They have pride in their school and buildings which is a credit to them all.

Favourite holiday spot in Australia?

Thornton. We have an onsite van in a wonderful caravan Park on the Goulburn River. No matter the time of year that you visit it is always perfect, from catching a trout, 4WD driving, motorbike riding to skiing at Lake Elden the weather and friends are always amazing.

What would be your ultimate 4WD adventure?

We are planning an adventure to the Kimberly's. Crossing the famous Gibb River road and flying over the Horizontal falls. Might have the opportunity to teach a few lessons at the school of air.

What is your favourite book?

John Marsden is my favourite author when I was young it was "so much to tell you" and now as an adult, teacher and mother his book "The art of growing up".

What got you interested in photography?

My Grandmother brought my first SLR Camera for my 21st Birthday. My travels through the NAVY inspired me to capture and be able to remember what I saw through photos.

What's your favourite movie?

Dirty Dancing.

Take a peek at Yallaroo Open Gardens Victoria will kick off its spring/ summer program on the weekend of the 14 and 15 September with the opening of ‘Yallaroo’ - a private garden in Narre Warren South featuring a wonderful collection of Australian plants.

Proceeds from the day will support Transit Soup Kitchen and Food Support.

Since 2010, Bob and Dot O’Neill have set about transforming their one-acre property into a predominantly native and productive garden, which is now bursting with well-grown Australian plants of every colour and shape.

Each plant has been carefully identified and labelled, making it perfect for garden lovers wanting to expand their knowledge of native plants to use in their own home gardens.

Amongst the plants collected over the years,

correas and grevilleas are particular favourites, attracting a wide variety of birdlife. Correct labelling has been essential with 50 variations of Correa pulchella alone!

The garden also has a large productive area including an extensive covered orchard where peach, figs, apples, cherries, plums and apricots thrive.

Other areas to explore include a fernery and a collection of zygocactus close to the house and several fishponds throughout the garden.

Morning and afternoon tea will be available at the garden with plant sales and a treasure hunt for children.

Yallaroo is at 7 Hillsmeade Drive, Narre Warren South. It will be open on Saturday 14 September and Sunday 15 September from 10am - 4.30pm. Entry is $8 (children U18 free)

Mother-daughter trekkers

By Brendan Rees From humid conditions to mosquitoes, leeches and other creepy-crawlies, there's nothing stopping a Casey mother and daughter from taking part in a nine-day fundraiser trek in an Indonesian jungle.

Tegan McPherson and her daughter Tracey McPherson will trek through Sumatra's last remaining tropical rainforest in RSPCA's 'Wild Walk' challenge.

The pair will hike through Gunung Leuser National Park - the last sanctuary of the Sumatran orangutan from the 7 - 9 September in their campaign to end animal cruelty.

They will be on the lookout for reclusive orangutans, gibbons, hornbills and other incredible creatures.

Tegan McPherson and her daughter Tracey McPherson will take part in a jungle trek challenge to raise funds for RSPCA Victoria.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED Tegan, who is head of operations at RSPCA Victoria, said she was slightly nervous but had always dreamed of seeing orangutans.

"I am sure it will be daunting to begin with but hopefully the relaxing sounds of the rain-

forest will be enough to ensure we get a good night's sleep," she said.

"I am just hoping to be able to push through the humidity. I think that's going to be the most different to conquer."

Tracey, who is a veterinary nurse team leader with RSPCA, said she hoped her fitness in riding her horse up to five days per week and walking her dog everyday would be enough for the challenge.

"Over the time we are trekking I am sure there will be lots to conquer with the terrain and humidity. Also the river rapids might prove challenging as well," Tracey said.

Tegan said she had never thrown herself in a jungle before apart from a nine day trek in high school, "but that's about it."

"I have no doubt this will be very different.

I was a lot fitter in my high school days," she added.

During their expedition, they will visit the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme whose vision is to prevent the extinction of the Sumatran orangutan.

"It just seemed like too good an opportunity to refuse," Tegan said.

She added: "Every day I see the impact that donations have on the lives of animals desperately in need of vet treatment, a loving home, or even someone to fight justice on their behalf.

"I'm very proud to be part of a journey that will help raise money to continue that."

Youngster lives her dream as part of state netball team

By Brendan Rees A young Narre Warren South netballer's hard work has paid off after landing a spot in the state team.

Twelve-year-old Piuti Laban was named in the School Sport Victoria 12-and-under state netball team and will now travel to Canberra to vie for the Australian title from 14-20 September.

The student of St Kevin's Primary School in Hampton Park says she was overwhelmed upon hearing her selection.

"I was so honoured and proud," she says.

"This is my best achievement so far to represent the state and being co-captain."

The talented youngster plays four times a week with the South East Melbourne Netball Club, Narre Warren Football Netball club and the Casey Representative Team.

But she says school work was just as important as well as balancing her role as house leader.

The selection comes after a tough process but Piuti says she's proud to earn her place.

"I have training's Mondays, and Fridays I either have clinic or catch up with my school work and pray every night because how god always comes first," she says.

Piuti started playing netball at age of seven and explains she had an immediate passion for the game.

Asked if she was nervous to compete at the School Sport Australia National Championships, she says "I'm actually very excited but whatever happens at the time I just want to make sure I do my family, friends and my school proud."

Proud parents George and Sharlene Laban say they have always supported their daughter

and encouraged her to "go as far she can".

Mr Laban says since taking up the sport Piuti's talent had "skyrocketed".

"I think it's in her blood ... god gave you the talent so make the most of it," he says.

The rise of the Redbacks

By Tyler Lewis SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3 - GRAND FINAL The Hampton Park Football Club is undoubtedly one of the feel good stories of season 2019.

The Redbacks were easily the best side for the year and were rewarded with the ultimate prize with grand final victory over Clayton on the weekend, 9.11 (65) to 1.5 (11).

Hampton Park president Tim Ziegler said he couldn’t believe the final result and was so pleased for the reward for effort over the past few seasons, which has seen the club go through a tough trot.

“It’s a little bit of disbelief,” he said. “(After) all the hard work that has gone in over the last couple of years, to finally achieve it (premiership glory), it is well worth it.”

Hampton Park was the clear favourite on the weekend against Clayton, but often sides that lead the competition for an extensive period of the home and away season are knocked off in the finals. However, for the Redbacks, their hunger was overwhelming - something Ziegler said has come from years of bad times.

“You never know until it is done,” he said.

“For the first time in a long time we have been the hunted, which was nice.

“We didn’t win a game for a few years before that which was tough.

“To achieve the success this year, after the hard work everyone has put in, is well deserved by the core group of those boys who have pushed through the tough times.

“I obviously couldn’t be any prouder.”

Hampton Park was a club that struggled with knowing where to play within the divisional structures of the MPNFL and South East, and Ziegler believes finding its home in Southern has paid dividends for the small community club that looks to have a sustainable future ahead.

“You always hope it will be the final result,” he said.

“South became the best option with divisional structures of South East and the Mornington Peninsula.

“We decided we needed to make the change and come across to Southern.

“We have and we have been able to reach success on the back of that on the back of that move.

Hampton Park celebrated a memorable senior premiership on the weekend.

“I think we should be able to hang on to our core that we have built over the past two years.

“The second division is where we wanted Southern to put us at the start of everything.

“Moving up into second, we aren’t worried, we think we can be competitive - I suppose you never know until you get there but we feel we should be okay.”

The Redbacks are set to make their move into the second division of the Southern Football League in 2020 after achieving grand final glory in 2019.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - PRELIMINARY FINAL The Doveton Eagles have carried their stirring finals form into the preliminary final against Murrumbeena, winning 12.14 (86) to 10.10 (70).

After kicking only six behinds in the second,

the Eagles bounced back to kick 12.8 from then on. Russell Robertson booted another four majors while Nick Battle was best afield yet again for the Eagles.

For Murrumbeena, Matthew Lello backed up his performance last game with another best afield effort.

The Eagles will now face off with Springvale Districts in the grand final with a full head of momentum.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 4 - GRAND FINAL South Yarra caused an almighty boilover in the big dance to secure the premiership, defeating Lyndhurst 7.6 (48) to 5.6 (36).

It isn’t often a side wins a grand final after losing the last half of a match, but for South Yarra it will be a treasured statistic to be buried into the Lions’ club history.

Justin ’Juzzy’ Smith, 24 - the vice-president and much-loved member of both clubs - was recently diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma in the stomach, groin and brain, in what is going to be an extensive journey to recovery after undergoing chemotherapy.

Both clubs have decided to hold a special fundraising Twenty20 clash at Max Pawsey Reserve in Narre Warren - with the cricketers set to take on the footballers from 12pm - to raise funds for Justin and his family to help pay medical costs, including his hospital stay, treatment and living expenses, with Justin unable to work at the moment.

There will be raffles, auctions, face painting, a jumping castle, as well as plenty of food and drinks on sale on the day. The boundaries should also be tested, with plenty of fours and

Dandenong Football Club committee member Gail Smith - who is organizing the event - said that Justin’s impact on both clubs is immeasurable.

“He is a dedicated, hard-working man, who puts his heart and soul into the football club, and I also work with him in the workforce, and he’s been sorely missed there and his job has been kept for him,” she said.

“But as far as football involvement goes, you

could not get a nicer, would give you the shirt off his back guy - he’s been heavily involved in trying to get sponsorship for the football club too.

“If you ask him to do something, he just does it - I couldn’t speak highly enough of him.

His integrity is second to none.

“We’re all really sad at the moment that he’s going through this, and all we want to do is be there for him and his family.”

Gail said the committee just simply had to do its part for its beloved vice-president and his family. She believes it’s what community is all about.

“When he had to finish up at work, we knew he wouldn’t have any funds coming in, so we knew he’d be struggling,” she said.

“As a football club committee we discussed it, and we wanted to do a fundraiser, and because he’s heavily involved in the cricket club to, we decided to join with them and contact them, and they came up with the suggestion of the Twenty20 match - the cricketers taking on the footballers.

And Gail urged the community to get behind Justin on what is going to be a special day, hoping everyone can dig deep and help get the family through a rough trot.

“It’s extremely important that we can get as many people as possible to attend to support Justin and his family,” she said.

When Jake Genoni was awarded a 50-metre penalty and slotted the resultant kick from inside the 50-metre arc after the final siren sounded in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) at Garfield on Saturday, the Seagulls had clinched their first ever reserves flag - 4.7 (31) to 4.3 (27).

That accomplishment alone, given the long history of the club, is remarkable.

But it’s even more so when considering the circumstances behind it.

At the end of the final ever SEFNL season, the Seagulls were facing an uncertain future - unsure of what a potential return to West Gippsland would mean.

And that uncertainty was magnified with the tragic and sudden loss of then club president Greg Kelly before the 2019 campaign.

But this season soon became one of resilience, hope, and ultimately incredible success as the Gulls celebrated four premierships on Saturday at Beswick Street - the reserves footy, along with the A Grade, B Grade, and C Grade netball.

The senior footballers, too, had some genuine long-awaited success of their own - reaching the preliminary final.

And on Saturday, they sprinted out on to the ground to celebrate with their reserves brothers in arms.

This was a day for the whole club to savour.

“It was just unreal - that’s the word I’ve been repeating for the past however many hours. It was just unreal,” said Nick Pouki, the Seagulls’ first ever reserves premiership captain - and the club’s football director - with a particularly croaky voice on Sunday.

“I remember looking at the clock at the 19:46 mark of the final term and I thought to myself ‘I can’t believe we’re going to lose a grand final by two points’.

“Then moments after that I just ran to the goal-line and watched the footy sail over my head and I still can’t believe it.

“With Jake, if he took that shot at training, he’d make probably seven out of 10 so you’d be pretty confident and back him in.

“But with the breeze, that footy didn’t even deviate.

“Sometimes he’ll kick the most unreal goals where he’ll just kick this forward, tumbling thing that’ll go through - and then all of a sudden he kicks the clearest drop punt you’ll see to win a premiership.”

Genoni is the son of past president, Derek - one of the most revered figures at the club, with a family history there spanning the generations.

But on Saturday night at the Tooradin Sports Club, it was Jake who took centre stage.

“You couldn’t have written a script any better than that - we hadn’t even made a twos grand final since 1984, and we’ve never won a twos premiership as a club,” Pouki explained.

“For a Genoni to kick the winning goal to get the first, that’s just ridiculous.”

Pouki understandably struggled to explain just what Saturday’s result meant to the Seagulls.

“Words can’t describe it, honestly,” he said.

“To go back to where we started at the start

“From every committee member - from the people who do the fundraising, to everyone who works in the canteen - the true belief was that we belong in West Gippsland.

“This has been a building season - building the foundations for what’s to come.

“Last year we had to sell the dream of thinking we were going to be competitive, but next year we know we will be.

“We’re a small town with a massive, massive heart and anyone who saw Tooradin on Saturday night and the amount of people who were there would have just been blown away.

“They recently named the function room at the Sports Club the ‘Rex Genoni Function Room’, but on Saturday night it was definitely the ‘Jake Genoni Function Room’, without a doubt.

“It’s so important we embrace this because it’s a once in a lifetime thing, potentially.

“It might be ‘just a twos flag’, but it means so, so much to our community.”

Back at the rooms, a spine-tingling rendition of ‘Seagulls Forever’ - featuring in excess of 150 voices - rang out.

Together, forever - just how it should be.

Phillip Island capped off a dominant day on the football field with premierships in both junior grades.

The Bulldogs kicked off the day with a 4.4 (28) to 2.3 (15) win against Nar Nar Goon in the under-16 grand final.

Island skipper Harry O’Brien was named best on ground, with Orlando Kane-Gillard and Finn Merryfull also catching the eye for the premiers. Bailey Beet, Jack Gribbin and Euan Grierson were best for the Goon.

It was a similar story in the under-18 grand final, with Phillip Island eventually overcoming Inverloch Kongwak 4.3 (27) to 2.6 (18).

Daniel Bourke was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal, while Josh Ryan and Kai MacKenzie were among the other standouts for the Bulldogs.

Patrick Holian, Jack Hutchinson and Cooper McInnes were best for the Sea Eagles.

The day culiminated in a senior grand final for the ages, where Phillip Island - previously undefeated in the 2019 season - remained that way, if only just. In an absorbing battle with an impressive Cora Lynn, the Bulldogs held on at the death to claim a famous victory - 9.11 (65) to 9.7 (61).

From hardship, to hope

By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL REVIEW - FINALS DIVISION 1 (WEEK 2 FINALS) When Doveton coach and club icon Daniel Charles returned for the 2018 season, the club was at a crossroads.

The Doves were struggling badly, and unable to field an under 19 side in what proved to be the final year of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL).

It proved to be a winless season for the senior group, while the reserves could only muster up a solitary victory.

While it may not seem that more on-field pain could actually bring the club out of its hole, things were improving, interest was growing and the Doves went down a different path. In the end, it's been the making of a club that relishes the underdog tag.

"Before I took over last year, I got a phone call from (club president) Aaron Henwood, and he said that this was the last ditch effort to keep the club alive," Charles said.

So before I got there last year, they were thinking of actually closing the doors, so I got there, and yes it was a tough year, and I knew it was because my recruits were aged between 17 and 19.

"I thought, 'there's no point just trying to get us up for one year', so I decided to get young kids in there that might struggle a bit in running out games, but they'll be better in the long run.

"It's worked out well."

And in a remarkable chapter in the club's history just a year later, the Doves are now playing in a grand final - it's first since 2009 after overcoming Pakenham in a remarkable wet-weather performance at Woori Yallock, 8.2 (50) to 2.4 (16) on Sunday.

The Doves scrapped, cracked in at the contest and found an extra edge. It's the Doveton way, and not many local football clubs in Victoria can transform itself and defy its own deficiencies to strive for success.

While the Doves have talent, and recruited smartly - blending youth and experience perfectly - the remarkable resurgence has also come down to mindset, and the ability for every player to appreciate the moment, and not look too far ahead.

"I've spoken to the players all year about celebrating every moment of a football game," Charles said.

"Whether it be the win, whether it's a hanger, kicking goals, defending, exiting, we want to just celebrate the little victories that come along in a game of football. It's certainly helped us."

Ash Green's Lions struggled to adjust the difficult conditions with pain pelting down from the start, being held goalless in the first quarter while the Doves managed just the one.

A beautiful running goal from a tight angle off the boot of Pakenham's Zac Stewart gave the Lions a bit of a spark in the second term, but it was obvious the Doves were going to prove almost impossible to topple, with Mitch Pierce in particular showcasing some impressive forward craft as his side surged out to an 18-point lead.

Refusing to give the Lions even the barest of sniffs, the Doves kicked away further in a completely superb final half, knocking off the minor premier - a side they couldn't overcome in the home and away season - with Pierce ending with four in a vitally important individual game considering the low-scoring nature of the contest. Charles described the vibe in the rooms as electric as the Doves belted out its famous song with plenty of gusto and emotion.

"It's a good feeling, the boys are up and about and the supporters packed the change room on the weekend after the win - the buzz was fantastic," he said.

"The boys were up and about, they sung the song with gusto, it's an enjoyable place to be at the moment."

Down at Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk braved the tough conditions to end Officer's season in 14.22 (106) to 4.10 (34).

The Hawks completely flattened the Kangaroos in a cold, wet day for footy, but relished the conditions and played one of their most dominant four quarters in the second half of this season.

Surging out to a impressive 29-point margin at quarter-time after running in waves and putting Doug Koop's side well and truly under the pump, the Hawks didn't relent, showcasing their trademark pressure and ability to get mountains of goal scoring opportunities, all but sealing the game at half time after taking in a 35-point margin.

After last week's tough loss to Doveton, it was clear the Hawks had no intention of slowing down in the second half - clearly with a point to prove as a major player in this year's premiership - kicking five goals to one in horrendous conditions across the final two quarters to set up a preliminary final berth against Pakenham this Sunday.

Yet by his own admission, his coaching debut in Saturday's qualifying final victory against Beaconsfield wasn't exactly how he envisioned it unfolding.

Quirk - in the midst of a brilliant individual season in the midfield - was thrust into the role during the week to replace regular senior coach Matt Shinners, who despite pushing to take his place on the weekend, couldn't get over a nasty illness.

"Yeah it was certainly not the circumstances I wanted to have for my first coaching gig with Matty being so crook," he said.

"But I sort of knew midweek to expect it might happen, and after a few conversations with Matty, he was still keen, but he has a pret-

tainly did with the conditions, whether it was the way you move the ball and just going forward.

"But nothing out of the ordinary changed on the weekend in terms of coaching."

For the Eagles, who will need to bounce back quickly in a cut-throat semi final against Cranbourne on Saturday, Sean Dwyer battled hard as usual, while Jack Griffiths relished the conditions.

Cranbourne, meanwhile, found a way to advance through to the second round of the finals in similar torrential conditions at AJ Robinson Reserve against Woori Yallock, 6.11 (47) to 3.14 (32).

In the cut-throat elimination final, Steve O'Brien's group led at every change in a classic wet weather contest, crucially making the most of its chances - particularly in the first half - to set up the win and prepare for a mammoth clash against Beaconsfield.

Much similar to the clash played minutes down the road at Edwin Flack Reserve, the conditions made life difficult for both sides, with the contested slog making for low-scoring, yet highly entertaining football. The Eagles strode away from the Tigers in the third term, kicking three unanswered goals to shut away any chance of a late comeback, finding a bit of spark on the larger ground to find enough class to get the job done.

Jordan Bertrand continued his fine season with another assured display, this time in a big final, while Bailey Buntine, leaders Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo, as well as the talented Kirk Dickson (two goals) all did their part in a strong team-victory.

The Magpies were completely dominant to kick off their finals campaign against the Eagles in what were extremely difficult conditions at Berwick's Edwin Flack Reserve, controlling the game from the outset to move one win closer to a grand final berth, 13.5 (83) to 2.9 (21).

Coming off a tough loss to Berwick to finish the home and away season, Quirk's Magpies were always destined to respond, slamming on five first-quarter goals and maintaining control over the contest, before holding the Eagles at bay in the second term to set up a four-goal lead at the main break.

Running out comfortable winners with a six-goal to none second half - with the likes of Nathan Foote, Matt Soroczynski, Jake Richardson and Trent Cody all prominent - Quirk said nothing drastic needed to change from his perspective, just to adjust to the wet conditions.

"It was a terrific performance, and especially in those conditions," he said.

"When you woke up that morning you always knew it'd be tough, but you certainly don't expect Berwick's ground to look that too often, it usually looks like the MCG. "You're not teaching a side too many new tricks this time of the year, it's just about rolling them out but some things change, and they cer-

Bowls season has arrived Last Saturday, Berwick Bowling Club was privileged to have City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon and councillor Susan Serey officially open Pennant season for the club.

Berwick played host for the day with a luncheon that was attended by more than 140 people who enjoyed a great day, despite the inclement weather.

Bowls chairman Jeff Janetzki welcomed everyone and thanked all the club volunteers who had organised the day.

Jeff then outlined the fantastic schedule of events planned for the coming season, which include hosting the Integrated Pairs tournament for Bowls Victoria and ‘The Champion of Champions’ for Eastern Ranges along with an array of club championship events.

Early in 2020 Berwick Bowling Club will also be hosting a ranking event, which is expected to attract some particularly high profile players from all over Australia.

The season ahead will be a very exciting and busy one for the club, which is again fielding five midweek sides and nine Saturday sides for the season ahead and will again be a force in the coming season.

During the afternoon both Cr Stapledon and Cr Serey acknowledged the inclusiveness of Berwick Bowling Club and outlined the upcoming Mayoral Walk for Disability, which will raise funds for supported accommodation units in the City of Casey.

At the conclusion of the luncheon everyone moved out onto the green for the mayor, Cr Serey and club champion Jean Fothergill to roll the jack and the first bowls of the season.

Members then enjoyed a social game together before enjoying afternoon tea back in the clubrooms where club chairman Trevor Fry announced that the afternoon had raised in excess of $500, which - to the delight of the mayor - was being donated to Project 28 as well as the Mayoral Walk for Disability.
