A special collaboration

By Danielle Kutchel A nostalgic new collection from Robert Gordon Pottery is set to grace tables for generations to come in a celebration of Australian talent.

The collection is being likened to the famous ‘Bunnykins’ pottery of many people’s childhoods - but this classic keepsake has a local twist.

The Pakenham-based pottery has teamed up with beloved Australia author Alison Lester to create a collection of crockery based on her memorable children’s book, Magic Beach.

The collection consists of a hat box containing a plate, bowl and mug using artwork from Magic Beach.

Two individual mugs featuring a scene from the book are also available.

Alison had often popped into Robert Gordon Pottery and suggested collaborating, according to manager Kate Gordon.

“An opportunity came up when we were designing our latest children’s set, and we thought she’d be perfect to work with,” Ms Gordon says.

“When she came in and opened Magic Beach, the pictures suited the crockery and fitted perfectly to the shapes.”

The crockery is oven, dishwasher and microwave safe, made of high quality materials that will endure through generations and are sure to become the next family heirloom. In fact, the new items are leaping off the shelves in a demonstration of the enduring legacy of these two local masters.

A weekend workshop with Alison in midAugust also proved popular. Guests were able to paint a plate with Alison and were treated to a talk with the award-winning author.

“This collaboration is special for both of

“There is so much love and nostalgia for Alison - there are adults who have read her books and are grown up now and they still know it, even grandparents can remember reading them and are now buying our collection for their grandchildren.”

The Robert Gordon x Alison Lester collection is now available online and in store at Robert Gordon’s Pakenham factory outlet.

It’s not the only new range to grace the pottery’s shelves.

While known for their exquisite plates, mugs and bowls, Robert Gordon has recently branched out into architectural fittings for bathrooms with a range of Australian-made ceramic basins.

Still country at heart Pakenham has been home for my family for the past 20 years.

In the eyes of a lot of people, that won’t qualify us as locals. But I have now lived in Pakenham longer than any other place in my lifetime, so I reckon we must be pretty close.

We tell people we moved into a country town two decades ago and now live in a sprawling suburb, which usually evokes nodding approval and the occasional eye roll.

There is no doubt Pakenham has changed a lot over that time.

When we arrived development had not ventured to the west of Toomuc Creek, there were only paddocks to the south of the Ronald homestead on McGregor Road and the Star News Group office was the only building of significance on the eastern side of Army Road.

Lakeside was on the drawing board and the likes of Arena, Falling Waters, Cardinia Waters, Arden and Devonia were not even names yet, let alone estates.

Now we are on the cusp of having a cluster of homes the size of Warragul appear between Ryan Road and Nar Nar Goon in the not too distant future.

At last count there were up to seven families a day making Cardinia Shire their home.

Some people bemoan that growth - and there are disadvantages. There is the never ending battle to make sure infrastructure keeps up with the influx of people.

The roads are a prime example. Congestion is a real source of frustration, as is the high number of unmade roads in atrocious condition, given the recent bout of wet weather.

expectation. But it’s not all bad.

The new people also bring greater character and diversity to the town.

Pakenham has always had great character and institutions like Yakkerboo, the Pakenham Show and the Pakenham Racing Club have kept us entertained and amused for decades.

Now we have equally colourful events like the Diwali Festival, Jorh Mela and Diri Guru Nanak Darbar Foundation Day on the social calendar.

Those new citizens who choose to live here largely enhance the community.

Dr Harpreet Kandra is a relative newcomer,

yet earlier this year was named Cardinia’s Citizen of the Year for helping those in need and fostering community spirit.

Pakenham has always had plenty of that.

Years ago a local father of three, Bruce Burnett, fell on hard times when his wife lost her battle with cancer. He knocked on the door of the home of then Gazette editor Dorothy Thomas one balmy evening in 1987 looking for help.

A story appeared in the next edition of the Gazette and the community response was overwhelming. Hoards of people came into the newspaper office to help out and Bruce had large notes pressed into his hand while walking down the street.

There have been similar community efforts since for those in need.

Last March, with the Bunyip State Park ablaze, recovery centres set up in haste were inundated with offers of help, to the extent that some were asked to put their kindness on hold.

Only days ago 350 people packed into the Pakenham racecourse to help raise almost $40,000 to help a bushfire hero, renowned equestrian Janina Kletke, in her recovery from serious injuries she sustained while trying to rescue a stranger’s horses at the height of the blaze.

And last Friday, almost 500 men crammed into the Cardinia Cultural Centre to raise money and awareness around men’s health, with a particular focus on prostate cancer, in the sixth annual Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch.

The growth may be making Pakenham city smart, but events like this show that it still has a big country heart.

Fresh start for old pub

By Garry Howe The makeover to a Pakenham institution is complete.

The old Pakenham Hotel - or Purvies as it was affectionately known by many - has a fresh new look and a name change to boot.

The establishment as old as the Pakenham town centre itself is now known as The Drake, a name also steeped in local history.

Owner Brendan Theobold thought it was time to give the place a new identity. The bistro was spruced up, the old public bar converted to a lounge area called the Members, the old beer garden has gone upmarket as The Terrace and the old TAB turned into a kids’ retreat.

Mr Theobold wanted to give the place its own identity and set it apart from the other venues as a family friendly place, free of gambling.

The move - made with little fanfare and no official opening as such - has been largely well received.

“People have been pleasantly surprised when they have come in for a look,” Mr Theobold said. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”

But some things remain the same. Functions are now held in the Stan Young Room, dedicated to the man who cut a familiar figure behind the bar for decades.

The name change to The Drake came about to avoid confusion. When the old highway hotel was renovated it became the Pakenham Hotel as well.

Orders were delivered to the wrong place and the last straw was when Mr Theobold received an invoice for TAB training for staff at the other hotel.

It was named in honour of another town institution, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Drake, who became known around town as ‘Mr Pakenham’.

A tireless worker for the community, Bunny served for years on the hospital board, the recreation reserve and football and racing club committees, just to name a few.

When he turned 80, friends chipped in and took out a full page advertisement in the Gazette for the man they described as “a wonderful human being”.

The Drake has a history dating back to the formation of what is now the Pakenham town centre.

Pakenham’s first settlement was along Toomuc Creek, with life revolving around the hotel that created all the name confusion, then known as the Bourke Inn, run by Michael Bourke and his wife Kitty.

When the railway came to town in 1878, train travel became more popular than horse and carriage along the old highway and another Bourke, Daniel, applied for a hotel licence near the railway.

His Gembrook Hotel was among the first buildings in the new town settlement.

The hotel changed hands in 1918, purchased by Joe and Esther Shankley, and it remained in their family for eight decades.

The Shankleys had previously owned the Macalister Hotel in Maffra and ran a catering business on pleasure boats that travelled on the Thomson River between Sale and Lakes Entrance.

They moved to Pakenham with their daughter Maude Purves, Nell McKenzie, Belle Lia and grandson Dave Purves. Maud lost her husband William Purves in World War I fighting for the Scots Guard in France and Dave was born just after his father’s battlefield death.

In 1928, Mr Shanley decided to replace the hotel’s structure to a new building he claimed would be “one of the most up-to-date hotels outside the city”.

Melbourne architect Harry W. Johnson of Collins Street designed the building that still stands today.

The new hotel provided accommodation for commercial travellers, school teachers and relieving bank managers and postal staff. It was a condition of the licence that the hotel must provide accommodation and meals for travellers at a daily tariff of two pounds.

After Joe Shankley’s death in 1946, the hotel was listed as a business for the mother and son team of Maud and Dave Purves.

The pub was then leased to Margaret and Ron Spinks, who ran it until 1995, when it returned to the family, to be run by Dave’s daughter Antionette and her husband Bryan Cunningham.

They ran the hotel for 10 years, before selling in November 2015 to current owner Brendan Theobold, who has now taken the establishment to another level.

The establishment started out as the Gembrook Hotel.

Giving back sparks joy Wendy Andrews is passionate about Pakenham and giving back to the community.

Wendy has lived at Lakeside since November 2008 and in the ten plus years she has called Pakenham home, Wendy has donated countless hours of her time as a volunteer for organisations including the Lakeside Residents Group, the Pakenham Show and Yakkerboo.

In May Wendy was honoured as the 2019 recipient of the Stan Henwood Award, which recognises lifetime achievements in community service and volunteering.

It commemorates the lifetime contribution that Stan Henwood made to his local community of Tynong, as well as the broader Cardinia Shire.

Wendy’s community involvement began even before she moved to Lakeside. Her mother had joined the residents group and Wendy naturally became involved as well.

Once she moved permanently to Lakeside, Wendy helped organise many fundraising luncheons at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

She joined the committee in 2010 and has held several positions including secretary and vice president and has been president for the past 5 years.

“The group has grown in strength over the last few years with the addition of committed committee members who have worked tirelessly to bring a great variety of events to the community.“ Other organisations close to Wendy’s heart are the annual Yakkerboo Festival and the Pakenham Show.

At an early Yakkerboo meeting Wendy was asked how she would like to become involved and she put her hand up for the art show “which I knew absolutely nothing about“.

Six years later she is still instrumental in pulling together the annual art show.

Wendy has been Yakkerboo Vice President for the past 4 years and has been in charge of art sales at the show managing to sell thousands of dollars of art to the community over the past 6 years.

“I was excited to find that Pakenham held an agricultural show and offered them my help on my first visit by judging some of the sections," Wendy said.

“When the racecourse was sold and the show moved to the PB Ronald Reserve it was a catalyst for some of the longstanding members to step down and take a well earned break and I was approached to head up the pavilion, a challenge I accepted and have managed to successfully operate for the past 6 years.“

Wendy has also helped raise money for the Light Horse and Field Artillery Museum at Nar Nar Goon and Camp Quality, which helps children battling cancer.

“I have invested a lot of my time and my own money into fundraising and bringing events to the community but most of the work I have done has been with the help of the fantastic teams of people who I work alongside to help make it all happen,“ Wendy said.

“Being nominated for the Stan Henwood award this year was a fantastic surprise. When my name was announced I was more surprised than anyone.

Four decades of caring David W. Bull Funeral Directors is a family owned business which has been helping other families farewell their loved ones with compassion and care for 40 years.

The business was founded by David Bull and his wife Betsie in August 1979.

David and Betsie started the business in Kooweerup. In 1981 they bought their first premises in Pakenham’s Ball Hill Road.

Today the business operates three modern funeral homes, in Pakenham, Drouin and Cranbourne, and involves three generations of the Bull family.

Now retired, David and Betsie have slowly handed the reins of the business to daughter Melissa and son-in-law Tony. Tony and Melissa have been joined in the business by their children Louise, Ben and Thomas, son-in-law Tom and future daughter-in-law Renee, who are continuing the family legacy of caring for the community in times of grief.

Melissa joined the firm when she was 20 in 1988 and Tony in 1989. Together for the last 30 years they have both been part of this growing business.

“It is a long time to be doing the same job but it is special and can be rewarding to be able to assist people at this sad time in their life," Melissa said.

She said her parents taught her to be compassionate and to listen.

“They taught me to look after families as if they were my own family.”

Melissa said funerals had changed over the past 40 years from traditional somber affairs with strict protocols to celebrations where individuality was encouraged and embraced.

“Today funerals or services focus on the memory of that person and celebrating their

Today far more people are cremated than buried, and the time between a person’s death and their funeral has also stretched out to a week or more rather than three or five days as in the past. Melissa said extra time was en-

couraged to allow time to prepare, "to have the day right and as you want and not feel rushed and overwhelmed".

“Funerals are becoming more individual and it’s nice for family and friends to have a

memory of that person to take away with them being with music selected, photos shared or items given, even a simple gesture of their favorite lollies.“ Melissa said.

“When we look after a family and, sadly, if they need to return to us, they know we endeavour to make this sad time easier for them.

It’s a compliment to us that people can trust us to be able assist them and also care for the people they love.“ She encourages people and families to talk about death and how they want to be remembered. Whatever age, people should consider writing down their wishes, or discuss with family and friends their favorite songs or flowers.

Enduring history lesson Catholic education in Pakenham dates back to the 1850s when a wattle-and-daub school, complete with bark roof, was constructed on the edge of Toomuc Creek. Students had few books and collected charcoal and bark on the way to school to use for writing.

An inspector from the Denominational Education Board, Mr Bonwich, was amazed at the ingenuity of both teacher Daniel Ahern and his students who had an "utter insufficiency of text books, copy books, writing material and had rough slabs of logs for desks." Nevertheless the school was in "very efficient condition with the exception of deficient writing".

A wooden school building costing eighty pounds was erected on the site in 1864. The school faced some headwinds, including a lack of money to pay for a teacher for the less than 20 students. By 1869 though, the land allocation had been made permanent. The original St Patrick's Church was completed in 1872.

Following the abolition of state aid to religious schools, in 1872 the school at Pakenham ceased to function. It was not until 1888 that the parish priest of Dandenong, Fr Quilter, was able to make funds available again for the reopening of the school. This occurred on 26th June 1888 with about 35 children in daily attendance.

Lay teachers continued to give their time over the next 47 years before the arrival of the Presentation Sisters to look after the school.

There followed many Presentation Sisters over the following 57 years, concluding with Sr Kath O'Neill who left at the end of 1991.

The St Patrick's site still has the original church building of 1872, which has recently been refurbished as the Performing Arts Centre for the school. It still has its hand-built roofing trusses of red pine, all held together with hand-cut halving joints and pegs - no

St Patrick's in 1966. nails. Both the overlay boards and the repolished floor boards are of baltic pine. The original slates have been replaced at some stage with tiles, though the original stained glass windows have been restored. The building also boasts a large gallery added some time during the 1960s. The existing sanctuary area is as it was with a roof feature above.

glass manufacturer in Melbourne. The Annunciation window and the matching Nativity one date from 1912. They are fine examples of Montgomery's work.

On site too is the 1920s classroom block used by Miss Elizabeth Hunt who is remembered with great affection for the tremendous contribution she gave to the students of St Patrick's. Built at a cost of 55 pounds, it was blessed and opened on the 16th April 1922 by Archbishop Mannix, boasting an enrolment

of 46 children. This room has also been refurbished after being relocated on the site for the fourth and final time in 2005.

The original school house from the 1880s and the convent extension from the late 1930s were demolished in 2005 to make way for the present Parish Centre. A memorial wall in this new building contains bricks and windows from the convent chapel as well as the foundation stone from the chapel and the names of all the Presentation Sisters who served there.

Arts take centre stage The Arts are important at St Clare’s Primary School for fostering creativity and individual talent according to Principal Helen Staindl.

Ms Staindl herself is a lover of the Arts and regularly sings with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

Surveying a scholarship

By Mitchell Clarke One lucky student from Pakenham Consolidated School will be awarded a scholarship into high school, thanks to a generous new community initiative from Nobelius Land Surveyors.

The Pakenham business has unveiled its inaugural scholarship, with the chosen student set to be awarded with a complete transitional package at Pakenham Secondary College as they tackle the next big step in their schooling life.

The scholarship will help to aid the financial burden associated with starting secondary college and will cover the cost of a laptop, the full book list, a uniform shop voucher, school fees for the year and a deposit for year seven camp.

Nobelius Managing Director Ben Nobelius is a former student at both Pakenham Consolidated and Pakenham Secondary College.

He hopes the scholarship will not only build a bridge between the business sector of Pakenham and the community but continue to develop the relationship between these two schools.

"I was a product of Pakenham, born and bred here and my opportunity was my dad giving me the go in our family company and then being able to prove myself and get the skills to take on our family business, I was fortunate enough that it came internally from my family," Mr Nobelius said.

"But I recognise that not everyone gets that and we'd like to play even a small part in someone's life and give them an opportunity."

Pakenham Consolidated School Principal Katrina Stewart is thrilled that a former student is now able to help other students succeed in their educational endeavours.

"For a local business to invest in the future like this is a great opportunity for one of our

students and will help the recipient excel in their studies at secondary level."

It's also provided an opportunity to introduce children to a career which doesn't necessarily receive the recognition that doctors, vets, plumbers and teachers get.

"Children didn't know what surveyors were, so we opened up this scheme that was completely out of their realm of knowledge," she said.

"Even that in itself has made some of our children know that there is greater scope of jobs."

But the scholarship isn't the only thing on the agenda for Nobelius' future goals, with team member Lachlan Balzary being appointed to a new community engagement officer role.

Working alongside the team, he's developed a vision of how the company can make a meaningful difference within the community.

"At Nobelius, we have grown from a twoman small business, to a medium sized business and we believe that now our business is able to give back to the community that has allowed our company to grow and thrive," Mr Nobelius said.

"We engaged all our staff to find out what was important to them, we then developed our community program off the back of that."

Education, helping people, animal welfare and the overall community were the areas of most importance.

The family owned land surveying company have been based in Pakenham for over 20 years.

With a strong sense of community, the local business will work closely alongside Pakenham Consolidated to find the ideal student who will benefit most from the opportunity.

Applications for the scholarship are open to all year six students at the school and close at the end of August.

Interviews are set to take place in September before the lucky student will be announced in early October.

Pakenham is a town full of intriguing characters, and Samuel Melih is no different.

An icon of the south eastern retail industry, he arrived in Australia in the late 1960s and has made a name for himself as a committed and high quality jeweller. In fact, his name is hard to miss - it’s at the front of his jewellery shop, Samuel the Jeweller, in Pakenham Marketplace.

Mr Melih opened Samuel the Jeweller in 1976 in the Hub Arcade in Dandenong. The shop was a hit and he remained there for 15 years before moving to Fountain Gate. He’s been in his current location in Pakenham for around seven years.

“I followed the people, followed the trends,” he explains, “all these people in the country here used to be in Dandenong. They shifted to Berwick, and now I have followed them!”

He’s thinking long-term too - with no plans to retire, Mr Melih hopes to stay in Pakenham for as long as possible, continuing to serve his loyal customers.

‘The nicest thing is when people look at it and they give you a smile. It’s like a stamp of approval. They don’t have to say anything, they look at the item and smile because they love it,” he says.

Mr Melih enjoys the creative freedom that his job brings. His favourite project is to refresh old, tired and discoloured pieces, rejuvenating them and making them look new again.

He discovered a passion for jewellery making at a young age after watching his uncle, who was a jeweller and watchmaker. Mr Melih began an apprenticeship in 1962.

Outside of gold, silver and jewels, Mr Melih raises goats on his country property. He has around 50 and says the hobby helps him regain his sanity.

“Some people go fishing; I have my goats.

Mr Helih has some sage advice, picked up over his 40-year retail career.

“When people come through the door and have a problem ... you need to sort the problem to their satisfaction or you’ll lose them.

When you do the right thing by them, you gain them and they’re your customers for good.

“It’s a pleasure to be here and serving people,” he says.

50 years of wedded bliss

By Jessica Anstice Thirteen married couples are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries at Cardinia Waters Retirement Village this year.

The entire village has been invited to gather together for an evening full of fun on Saturday 24 August.

On hand to recognise the amazing marriage milestones will be the Cardinia Waters Retirement Village manager, along with friends and families.

The couples celebrating 50 years of marriage are: Kaye and Ian Smith, Betty and Barrie Young, Lyn and Bill (Doc) Thomas, Christine and Dennis Patmore, Bernadette and Tony Barker, Trish and Barry Green, Leah and Nick Rinkel, Gwyn and Terry, Pam and Bob, Joan and Simon Templar, Barb and Kevin Leslie, Marie and Trevor Newham and Penny and Norm Rissinich.

Trevor and Marie Newham first met at a church in Richmond when they were both 15-years-old.

"We grew up together and accepted things as they came," Marie said.

"We lived in China together for three years and had an absolute ball. We've done a fair bit of travelling since we retired."

Trevor says the key to a successful marriage is to "talk through the problems" and don't "try and fight them yourself".

The sweet couple - who have lived in Pakenham since 2004 - have an eight-year-old grandson and four "grandpuppies".

Kevin and Barb Leslie settled in Pakenham 10 years ago.

On September 27 1969, AFL grand final day, Kevin and Barb said "I do" and since then, they have been side by side on an amazing journey of love, laughter and joy.

"We've been very lucky. I love the companionship," Barb said.

"We've had a few health issues but we've just moved on through it. Communication is the main thing.

"Cruising with our children and grandchildren and going to Canada for Kevin's 70th have been the highlights for us."

Kevin and Barb have planned a trip to Inverloch with their children in September to celebrate their anniversary.

Barrie and Betty Young have also lived in Pakenham for the past 10 years and prior to that lived in Narre Warren South.

The couple's idea of a successful marriage is to "not take everything so seriously".

"If you can laugh and carry on with a little bit of a sense of humour, that's what we've found helped," Betty said.

"I've learnt to not listen to everybody. Close your ears to some things.

"Whether having no kids is the answer to a successful marriage - we don't know."

Barrie believes taking the "good with the bad and the bad with the good" is an important factor in his marriage.

"I can't get my way all the time and she can't either," Barrie said.

"You've got to have a bit of a happy-medium somewhere and come to some consensus.

"When all else fails bring out the cricket bat," he laughed.

Bernadette and Tony Barker were just teenagers when they first met at a church function and have been "happily plotting along" and "going with the flow" since.

"I think if anyone says they haven't had an argument they're lying," Bernadette said.

"I think the key to a successful marriage is perseverance and tolerance. Time spent apart is good too.

"I suppose you get to the point when you just put up with them."

Bernadette and Tony's favourite memory together was when they visited Rome in 2010 for Mary Mackillop's canonization.

For the past 50 years, Christine and Dennis Patmore never doubted their relationship.

"For us, it's about respecting one another and giving each other a lot of space to do our own things," Christine said.

"We're one another's best friend which is the main thing."

Pam and Bob Silke's relationship began with an unusual first encounter.

"We met in a kitchen. I was cleaning an oven at a friend's place and he walked in and said to my backside "if you're not careful you'll pop right out of those jeans"," Pam laughed.

"He only stayed for five minutes before leaving. I said to my friend "who's he? He's gorgeous".

"He invited me out the next week."

One of the biggest highlights for the pair was living in Papua New Guinea for three and a half years.

Cardinia Waters' wedding anniversary celebration event organiser Penny Rissinich is also celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary, with her husband Norm.

Also first meeting as teenagers, Penny and Norm have two daughters and four grandchildren.

"People laugh at us because we still hold hands," Penny said.

"Longevity is in the family. I could count on one hand the amount of times he's said no. I just love him."

Police probe house fire

By Jessica Anstice Police and emergency services responded to reports of a fire in Pakenham on Friday. Investigators have been told the fire broke out in the shed of a property on Cameron Way about 1.15am.

The fire was contained to an external garage however two residents from the neighbouring property were also evacuated without incident.

The woman who was home at the time was also evacuated.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined however police are treating it as suspicious and Arson Chemists attended the scene.

White Night raids

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Fresh details have emerged at a Dandenong court about two youth gangs planning a "retaliation fight" during the White Night festival on 23-24 August.

Police had "strong intelligence" of a planned clash between South-East-based gang Next Gen Shooters (NGS) and a West-based rival Blood Drill Killers at the event in Melbourne CBD, a bail hearing at the court heard.

Sixteen males from the South East were charged over an armed affray in Footscray during police raids on the morning of 20 August.

The charged teenagers were aged between 15-18 from Hallam, Clyde North, Berwick, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Doveton and Dandenong.

Armed with sharpened sticks, metal poles and kitchen knives, the group assaulted four occupants in the room and damaged the room, Sen Const Adrian Farano of Taskforce Wayward told the court.

Wuordol's role in the attack was unknown at this stage, Sen Const Farano said.

The victims, who received injuries, had also refused to co-operate with police.

However, police intelligence suggested that a "retaliation fight" at White Night was planned as a result of the attack, the court heard.

"Our belief is the parties know each other," Sen Const Farano said.

"It seems to have started from a very small tit-for-tat. Someone's said something about someone else and it's grown from there."

The NGS gang members were linked on social media or from the same schools, he told the court.

"The accused has made considerable effort to travel from one side of Melbourne to the other to take part (in the Footscray affray)."

He said other cafe patrons were "shaken" by the incident and afraid the group would return.

The attackers filmed and live-streamed the incident on social media, with police analysing video from mobile phones seized during the 20 August raids.

Wuordol was on bail at the time for cannabis possession and giving police a false name in Pakenham on 25 July.

Police bailed most of the group, except three who were already on bail at the time Allegedly among them was Koang Wuordol, 18, of Pakenham, who applied for bail on charges of affray and violent disorder at a Dandenong Magistrates' Court hearing on 20 August.

Police were opposed to bail due to a lack of compelling reasons, being a flight risk, and an unacceptable risk of re-offending, interfering with witnesses and endangering public safety.

Police say Wuordol was among about 20-plus NGS "African males" who entered through the rear door and forced entry into a second-storey room at a "community cafe" in Barkly Street, Footscray, about 8.20pm on 31 July.

Sport gender on agenda A new campaign championed by Aligned Leisure under the Together We Can banner is shining a light on gender equity in sport.

The idea for the ‘He Can so We Can Too’ campaign came out of a Together We Can leadership summit as a community solution to helping to tackle family violence.

It has been developed by Aligned’s Cardinia leisure manager Paige Kristalyn and head of customer experience Chris Banbury and will be rolled out in the local press and on social media channels over the coming months.

Ms Kristalyn said its aim was to increase awareness around equity in sport and promote that sport is for everyone.

She said gender equity had been identified as a key driver in cases of family violence, which has been identified as the most critical social issue facing Cardinia Shire.

Aligned Leisure, which became a White Ribbon accredited business earlier this year, recruited locals connected to sport and leisure, whether through passion or participation, to feature in the campaign and received a great response.

The campaign has been welcomed by Together We Can’s collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost.

Ms Cost said the ‘He Can so We Can Too’ campaign was making real the AFL’s Respect and Responsibility Policy that commits to “deliver a sporting experience that is safe, fair and inclusive for all, whether you are a player, administrator, supporter, volunteer or any other person who engages with the code”.

“So many of us are working hard to stop family violence before it starts, and this campaign by Aligned Leisure is part of the solution,” she said.

“This campaign is not just for AFL. It calls to action all club committees, officials, sponsors and players, from many sporting codes, to think about the value of diversity and inclusion in all areas of sport.

Solution only short-term

By Mitchell Clarke Cardinia Shire Council will enter into a shortterm contract of up to two years with Polytrade Recycling for the processing of kerbside recycling.

Polytrade has agreed to receive and process a proportion of kerbside recyclables from council, after an initial contract with SKM Industries came to an abrupt halt, when they were unable to meet EPA requirements.

SKM were issued with notices from the EPA regarding environmental non-compliance in February following fire and health risks at their Laverton and Coolaroo sites.

During an 11-week shut down period, council was forced to send recyclable material to landfill, sparking environmental outrage and an increased financial burden.

Unable to clean up their act, SKM ceased accepting materials from all Victorian customers including 31 other councils from Friday 26 July and the company has since gone into liquidation.

The recycling industry was thrown into turmoil in early 2018.

As it stands, Cardinia Shire Council and City of Casey are able to share Polytrade's limited capacity of 50 tonnes per day, with Cardinia

being afforded 13 tonnes while Casey has 37 tonnes, a number derived from annual tonnages produced.

It's believed Polytrade are set to upgrade their Hallam processing facility within four to six weeks to a full materials recovering facility, which would eventually enable them to receive the remaining recycling tonnes from both councils.

We're told the current processing rate by Polytrade is higher than the contractual rate with SKM, but the additional cost is still a saving compared to the rate of sending material to landfill.

If the short term contract with Polytrade wasn't acquired, recycling would continue going to landfill until additional facilities are opened in Victoria.

Council officers have been working alongside 61 other councils on a group procurement process to invite new players into the recycling processing market.

The recycling industry was thrown into turmoil in early 2018, largely due to changes to environmental policies in China, which saw restrictions of the imports of Australian recyclables.

Bakers turn up the heat to help fight animal cruelty

By Jessica Anstice Residents at Pakenham's Millhaven Lodge grabbed their aprons and preheated the oven to take a stand against animal cruelty on Monday.

The facility raised a total of $41 in gold coins for the RSCPA. The aim of the Cupcake Day was to help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country.

"Our cupcake day went well. The residents and staff had a ball icing and decorating the cupcakes," Millhaven Lodge activities coordinator Tracey Van Roy said.

"We had a variety of coloured icing for them to choose from and lots of icing flowers, funny faces, glitter and chocolates to choose from for their cakes.

"Some of the residents didn't want to eat their cupcake and ruin their masterpiece. We did some reminiscing about what sort of cakes they used to cook for their families and two of our ladies used to do cake decorating."

Brickbat for tradie as ‘loose load’ hits the road

By Mitchell Clarke A Pakenham motorist has managed to avoid a potential disaster after a number of bricks hurtled from the truck she was travelling behind.

Ruth Grant was heading home from Fountain Gate on the Princes Freeway when the incident unfolded on Wednesday 14 August about 1.30pm between the BP service station and Cardinia Road.

"I noticed dust coming off the back of the truck," she explained.

"Then I saw one brick come off and bounce on the road, then about four or five more came off."

Despite travelling 100km/h, Ms Grant managed to swerve and miss the majority of the hazards, however one wayward brick hit her windscreen, thankfully only causing minor damage to her vehicle.

"I'm so surprised how small (the damage was) as the bang it made was huge."

Most importantly, she wasn't hurt and her six-month-old and two-year-old children in the back seat were also spared from injury.

"I just panicked and tried not to hit them," she said.

"Straight after it happened, I was just worried about one actually going through someone's windscreen and hurting them."

She's urging tradesmen and motorists in general to always double check their loads are secure before driving.

"Just double check everything, it only takes a few minutes and it's not OK to put people's lives at risk because of laziness."

Cardinia Highway Patrol has been contacted for comment.

Preconceived notions were brushed to one side on Friday afternoon, 16 August, as two of the AFL world’s most larger than life figures laid bare their involvement in helping to further men’s health causes.

St Kilda Football Club champion, former skipper, and Saints Hall of Fame inductee Danny ‘Spud’ Frawley; and arguably the game’s most spoken-about umpire - ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain - were two of the feature speakers at the sixth annual Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

About 500 blokes, from all walks of life throughout the local community, came together to raise much-needed funds for prostate cancer research, as well as a host of local men’s health initiatives.

Though the tally from this year’s event is still to be finalised, it is expected that more than $100,000 was raised - bringing the total raised over the event’s short history so far to more than $560,000.

But the event was about far more than just the dollar amount raised.

It provided a rare opportunity to get a large number of men together in one room to talk about the kinds of health issues affecting them.

Friday’s bumper crowd - which packed out the Culture Centre - heard from not only Mr Frawley and Mr Chamberlain, but also Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s (PCFA) John Strachan, Dr Tony De Sousa from the Melbourne Urology Centre, and local Pakenham Football and Netball Club chaplain David Sollberger - who is an instrumental part of the ‘Together We Can’ campaign, which aims to put a stop to family violence in the Cardinia shire.

Much-loved Melbourne stand-up comedian and radio presenter Dave O’Neil compered the hugely-popular event, which had the blokes in attendance at various stages either on the edge of their seats - captivated by the stories told - or in fits of laughter from the day’s lighter moments.

This year organisers are set to give away another $10,000 through the Casey Cardinia Foundation’s grants program, which provides much-needed funds to a range of worthy men’s health projects and initiatives in the local area.

Dr De Sousa, who works locally at both the St John of God and Casey hospitals, spoke about the cold hard truth of prostate cancer the most common of any male cancer.

“It’s estimated that, this year, 20,000 blokes will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and the lifetime risk - if you live to be old enough - is one in five,” he said.

“While most men who get prostate cancer don’t die from it, more men still die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer.

“Unfortunately, there are no real signs until

it’s too late. That’s why you need to go and get a test.”

Dr De Sousa also dispelled a range of myths associated with prostate cancer.

“The first is that it’s an old man’s disease,” he said.

“Whilst it is more common in older blokes, I’ve seen patients in their 40s get prostate cancer as well, and it’s the younger blokes who have a lot more to lose from this disease.”

Dr De Sousa also spoke about the sheer disbelief many prostate cancer sufferers initially experience upon being diagnosed.

“They think ‘I’ve got no symptoms, how can I have cancer?’,” he said.

“The reality is that prostate cancer doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s often quite advanced.”

White Night fight fears

Fear of falling

By Jessica Anstice An elderly resident is fearful over slipping on an acorn after Casey Council has let a large Oak Tree grow in front of her Berwick home.

The 87-year-old woman says she has "exhausted every avenue" in attempt to have the tree removed.

Marion Limpus, who lives in Timbarra Estate, is concerned the 30-year-old tree will drop branches on her property or in worst case, on her.

"Some concrete has risen above my driveway and I could easily trip over it," she said.

"The tree has matured and it drops masses of acorns which I could quite easily slip on one.

"It's a huge worry. I already have a really bad leg."

Ms Limpus complained to Casey Council after an arborist recommended that the tree "should go".

"Council are not doing anything about it," she said.

"According to the arborist's report some of the branches could easily come down in strong winds, especially with the recent weather we've had."

Casey council recently inspected the nature strip tree following contact from Ms Limpus.

"Minor remedial pruning work, to remove a small branch, will be done before the end of August," Casey Council's city presentation manager David Richardson said."This branch does not pose an elevated risk of falling before its pruning."

Magistrate Tara Hartnett said she would not bail Wuordol without suitable accommodation and Youth Justice supervision.

Wuordol was remanded in custody for a "thorough" Youth Justice assessment and further bail hearing on 21 August.

A 17-year-old from the South East was granted bail on Youth Justice supervision at a children's court, despite police opposition.

He had already been on bail on charges of affray and assault by kicking over an attack on a lone victim in central Dandenong on 11 May. On 20 August, a magistrate granted the 17-year-old due to his age, lack of convictions and Youth Justice supervision.

He was granted bail on condition he didn't associate with the co-charged or contact witnesses.

The teen was ordered onto a night curfew and not to attend Footscray CBD or White Night sites - Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Birrarung Marr and Melbourne CBD. About seven NGS gang members were reportedly involved in a stabbing and assault of three males at a Dandenong fish-and-chip shop on 14 August. No arrests have yet been made.

In a media statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Sheehy, of North West Metro Regional Crime Squad, said police would not tolerate public violent incidents that put the safety of others at risk.

"It's really concerning to see so many young people facing court on serious charges including affray and violent disorder.

"We can't forget the impact violent crime has on the rest of the community, it causes an unacceptable level of harm and fear."

Thanks to Cam Lucadou-Wells, once again, for his important story in the most recent edition of the Dandenong Star News exposing the authoritarian nature of local government, see "Public speak out against gag".

Many councilors, at Casey council, just like the Dandenong councillors, appear to think that councils exist for their own agenda; not the concerns of local residents.

Councils exist in a democratic system. This means more than leaving all the important decisions to elected councillors.

In a real democracy, as opposed to a fake democracy, public question time should be the first and foremost item on any council's meeting. Ratepayers and residents should all have the opportunity to verbally ask questions and seek clarification from councillors.without being subject to artificial constraints.

Casey council has a ridiculous situation where all questions from residents have to be approved - and validated - by their governance office before any questions can be allowed.

I believe this amounts to little more than what George Orwell would have described as thought control.

Ratepayers deserve better, especially when they pay Casey their CEOs and mayors very generous allowances from their rates money, taxes, and charges.

The present Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek needs to reform the anti-democratic instrument on which local government authority rests - the 1989 Local Government Act. It needs to be modernised to incorporate real democratic values and respect for residents and more - not less - public question time in future.

Hand-sewn labours of love

By Danielle Kutchel An Officer resident who has donated more than 100 hand sewn items to charity is a finalist in Melbourne's newest art show, the Lifestyle Communities Simpson Arts Prize.

Sandra Edwards, who lives at Lifestyle Officer, entered two pieces into the competition: a christening gown and a crewel footstool.

The footstool gained the attention of judges and was shortlisted as a finalist.

"It's quite surprising. I am excited; it was a little unexpected, because I wasn't sure what else was going to be entered," Mrs Edwards said.

The crewel footstool took her around 12 months to complete, with each stitch painstakingly formed by hand.

Likewise, the christening gown was a labour of love that has taken a couple of years to complete, with exquisite beading and stitching again done by hand.

"It's just something I've always wanted to do, to try my hand at a christening gown - and I did it!" she said.

The veteran needleworker, who has been sewing for 60 years, says she enjoys making intricate pieces. She is also attracted to the history of crewel work, which was popular during the Jacobean and Elizabethan eras.

Another of her projects is a crewel work top for a footstool that belonged to her grandmother and has been passed down the through the family.

She draws inspiration from craft shows, magazines and other people's artwork, using their achievements as motivation to try her hand at something new.

Mrs Edwards also creates pieces for numerous charities. She donates many of her knitted creations to Kogo, a Caulfield-based not for profit that provides winter woollies to some of the most vulnerable in the community.

As well as this, Mrs Edwards has previously supported Angel Gowns and provides items to Cranbourne-based charity Backpacks 4 VIC Kids.

"I'm just doing something I love and happy to share what I've done and hopefully encourage others to have a go," she said.

The inaugural Simpson Arts Prize will be held on Wednesday 28 August at the Melbourne Pavilion and is open to the public. The judging panel includes Livinia Nixon and art and craft expert Ramona Barry.

Each category winner will receive a cheque for $1000.

"My music box is dedicated to grandchildren who are a big part of most residents' lives," Ms Parker-Hamilton said.

While the resident of Lifestyle Berwick Waters admits the work involved was "very fiddly and demands a lot of concentration," she finds it "really relaxing."

Cops’ wild chase

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April.

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne.

The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park.

The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs.

Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv ing i on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.

Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway.

The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking;

counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft.

A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft.

Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April.

A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two t counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

She was bailed bail to appear at Frankston Magistrates' s' Court on 3 September.

A Shinboner right through

By Sports Editor Russell Bennett The football connection runs deep through Tanner Stanton’s family.

His father, his uncles, and even his sister’s partner all have a heavy involvement in the game - but yet he’s forged his own path.

The 23-year-old has spent the past two seasons playing under his father, Hayden, at Garfield in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition.

It’s the only time he’s ever been coached by him, outside of a brief period in junior cricket.

But it’s been in these two seasons that Stanton’s career has taken off.

He credits a lot of that to the increased responsibility he’s been given as part of a young Stars outfit, but also the eagerness to prove he belongs alongside some of the local area’s best talent.

His selection at interleague level earlier this season was one surefire indicator that he absolutely belongs, but the biggest yet was when he was told he’d be making his VFL debut recently for North Melbourne against Geelong at the famed GMHBA Stadium.

It was a significant step in a long journey that first took him to another sport entirely, before he ultimately returned to the game he loves most.

For years there, as part of the Dandenong set-up in the Victorian Premier Cricket scene, it looked like Stanton had left footy behind.

He was a prodigious talent from a young age - named to represent Victoria at a number of junior levels.

But footy is his true love, outside of partner Chantelle - of course - who’s backed him every step of the way.

Family, and the support they provide, has been huge for Stanton.

Not only does his father coach the Stars after having coached right across the southeast for many years, his uncles Sean and Justin coach their own sides in the Eastern Football League - Fairpark and The Basin, respectively.

Stanton spent a brief period playing under his uncle Sean at Fairpark, before ultimately arriving at Garfield to play under his father from the 2018 season.

He’s got no shortage of people to turn to for advice on his career, including little sister Grace’s partner, Essendon young gun Darcy Parish.

But he knows if he’s going to make it, it’s up to him.

Stanton made it to the final list cull at VFL club Port Melbourne in the 2019 pre-season, but it wasn’t to be.

Instead, a call up to North Melbourne’s VFL arm was written in the stars.

Stanton was born in a Kangaroos AFL premiership year (1996), as was his sister (1999), and the family are Shinboners through and through.

He ultimately made his VFL debut for the Roos in Geelong, before backing up on the weekend to take to the hallowed turf of Arden Street for a clash against Footscray.

But the biggest accelerator to get to that point came through his time at Garfield.

“To be honest, the two years under dad has progressed my footy immensely,” he said.

“I’m a much better player now than I was three years ago.

“It’s opened my eyes on what it takes to be an elite player.

“He just taught me how to best prepare myself, to have the right application on game day, and the ability to play in different roles.”

And the improvement in Stanton’s contested and ground ball work is testament to that.

A rangy, polished ball-user - who’s particularly lethal by foot - he’s constantly working on other areas of his game to make him a more rounded player. And those at VFL level, including North coaches David Loader and Brendan Whitecross (also the side’s captain), have noticed.

Stanton says the quality of the senior competition in the WGFNC is particularly underrated when it comes to the top sides.

And his selection in the interleague side under Mark Lafferty was another sign of his progression - particularly given his devotion to footy only truly came about from the start of last season.

His opportunity at North Melbourne came with absolutely no guarantees. It’s similar to the development player role he was also offered at Port Melbourne when he narrowly missed out on the senior VFL list.

He was told the only way he would get a VFL game in the famous Roos colours was either through injury, or bursting down the door with his form at local level.

But even the slight chance to run out on to the ground in North Melbourne colours was too good for him to pass up.

His decision-making, ball use, and communication clearly stands out to anyone who watches him play.

But in the past couple of seasons his leadership has also come along in leaps and bounds.

Before he was picked to make his VFL debut against the Cats, he was told by his coaches

at North that his commitment to training, his talk, and his skills were all real standouts. It’s exactly what sets him apart in the WGFNC. When he was asked by Loader and Whitecross if he thought he was up to playing VFL footy his response was a simple: “Bloody oath”.

“I was just so appreciative of the chance, but I knew deep down I’d worked hard, and I’d deserved it,” Stanton said.

His parents were having dinner nearby to Arden Street when he got the nod that he’d be making his debut.

They were over the moon when he told them, but it wasn’t until he got in the car later that night and told his sister Grace - and heard the excitement in her voice - that the significance of his selection to his family really hit home.

It’s the lifelong dream of so many young footballers to end up wearing the colours of the club they grew up supporting, and he was about to get that chance.

And given the hard yards he’s put in to get to where he is, that chance he has in front of him isn’t something he’ll ever take lightly.

With the knock-back at Port Melbourne, the easy thing for him to do was to go into his shell and give up.

“But I took that on-board to spur me on and try and prove them wrong,” he said. “They did offer me a spot on their development list, but I wanted to go and try my luck somewhere else and work really hard for it. That’s the most pleasing thing.

“You see a lot of guys give up the dream, but I’m 23. If I’m going to make it in footy, it’s in the next few years that I really have to stand up. Now is my time.”

Though his debut game resulted in a heavy loss to the Cats, Stanton used his debut opportunity wisely.

His main focuses in that game were his defensive acts, pressure, tackling, and playing to the North Melbourne style of footy - coming up at the kicker and hunting in packs. After starting forward, he was later switched to halfback and stayed disciplined in his lock-down role on a number of their rotating forwards.

As for his second game against Footscray, and his first chance to play a game in North colours at Arden Street, Stanton’s excitement was obvious, even in the days after the clash.

The Eels make history

The Pakenham Eels Rugby League club made history last Friday night, with its under-17 girls tag team claiming the club's first ever premiership.

There were three grand finals hosted by the Pakenham Eels on E. Gunton Oval at the Cardinia Recreation Reserve.

While the North West Wolves claimed the women's Tag premiership over the Altona Roosters 36-24, Pakenham had two sides featuring on grand final night.

The gallant under-14 girls tag side was beaten 28-8 in its decider by the Waverley Panthers, but lost no admirers in the process.

Though the Eels essentially trailed on the scoreboard right throughout the game, they fought back to finish with a hugely respectable total in what was the first grand final appearance for most of the girls.

This season marked the first that Friday night League tag was run.

Cardinia Shire Council paid for the lights to be tested at the Cardinia ground so that the Eels could host home games there.

For the first time ever, the Eels fielded three female teams - the under-14 girls Tag, the under-17 girls Tag, and senior women's Tag. The weekend also marked 'Women in League Round'.

This served to add even more significance to the history-making occasion.

The Eels' under-17 girls Tag side stole the show with a thrilling four-point victory on Friday night over the Waverley Panthers, 16-12.

Though the Eels led for much of the contest, there was only ever really one try separating the two sides.

Late in the second half the Eels had around half a dozen defensive sets on their own try line, and Waverley scored with around three minutes left on the clock - squaring the ledger at 12-12.

But there was still plenty of drama yet to unfold.

Straight off the tap restart, the Eels went straight into a set play and returned serve with the final try to seal the match, four tries to three - 16-12.

The Eels have taken to girls Tag by storm this season.

One player in particular, Paige Kenworthy, played in the under-14 girls tag grand final on Friday night, then backed that up with the under-12s' final round of the season on Saturday, before then playing at half-time of the Melbourne Storm game at AAMI Park.

Some of the Eels' under-17s players have been with the club since its inception in 2016.

For their side to take out the grand final against such a quality, proven side like Waverley was an incredible accomplishment.

Cardinia Shire Council Central Ward councillor Collin Ross was there to watch it all unfold.

In other Eels news, the second division men's side defeated Frankston on Saturday afternoon 14 to 6, with the Eels making their way through to the major semi-final where they'll play local rival, the Doveton Steelers.

The Pakenham Warriors' Big V basketball Division 2 women's side will play Melbourne University Black Angels in the grand finals this weekend.

When the two star sides met in the playoffs only a short while ago, the Warriors came away with a 71-61 victory. Keeley Patterson starred that day with 21 points and three steals and will once again be crucial to the Warriors' chances of bringing home some silverware.

Although finishing a position lower than the Black Angels in the standings, the Warriors have won two of the three contests this season between the two sides.

The first of the best of three game grand final series will commence will tip off at 7pm at Melbourne University on Saturday night.

The second game - the following week - will be played at Cardinia Life on Saturday 31 August. Then, if required, a deciding game the following day, also at Cardinia Life, will tip off from noon.
