A cast of 50 students from Waverley Christian College in Narre Warren South are preparing for the school's latest production of Beauty and the Beast.

Students from years 7-12 have put in countless hours of rehearsals.

"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour at our school and it does not reflect the values of the overwhelming majority of our students," Ms Bolch said.

"This matter has been reported to Victoria Police and we will assist them with their inquiries.

"We will investigate this matter thoroughly and take any appropriate action."

Footage has surfaced on social media which shows a number of students being forced to hide under their desks as the brawl took place.

The three boys arrested in relation to the brawl have all been released pending summons.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A teacher has been attacked during a mass brawl at Berwick College which broke out between 20 students and forced the school into lockdown.

Police were called to the Manuka Road campus on Tuesday 20 August, about 1.30pm where three boys aged between 14 and 16 years old were arrested in relation to the incident.

A member of the staff was assaulted and received minor injuries as they attempted to break up the fight. A 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries but has since been discharged.

The staff member injured is believed to have been a deputy principal who was alleg-

edly rammed into a wall and punched in the stomach by a Year 8 student, as reported in other media.

The nature of this particular brawl is yet to be confirmed, with the Department of Education yet to answer our questions about the motive of the fight and whether it involved students who were currently suspended or expelled.

It's also not known whether this fight is linked to another alleged "violent incident" occurring at the same school last week.

Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch confirmed an altercation between students took place on Tuesday and prompted the school to enact their lockdown procedure.

Murdoch deserves life

By Brendan Rees Karen Cheeseman says she was left for dead nearly 13 years ago when she was brutally attacked in her Berwick home.

The 50 year-old has recounted the horror that left the left side of her body partially paralysed.

She remembered dragging herself to the front door to open it for paramedics after being stabbed three times in the throat and cheek, and struck in the temple with a large paperweight, opening a wound to the bone.

"I knew there was something wrong with my leg," she said.

Her attacker missed slicing her neck with a knife by a "millimetre" and pushed her behind a couch as if "she was nothing".

For years, Ms Cheeseman tried to put the incident behind her after Scott Alan Murdoch was jailed for five years, in 2009.

Her attacker, Murdoch, has this month pled guilty to murdering a Pakenham mum.

In 2013, he broke into a Pakenham family home but was disturbed by Kylie Blackwood whom he repeatedly stabbed her in the neck and chest.

Murdoch pled guilty to her murder during a Supreme Court trial, with his sentencing to be heard at a later date.

But for Ms Cheeseman, Murdoch should be given a life sentence.

Sitting in her living room with her Maltese Terrier named Barry and mother Lyn Flewin, Ms Cheeseman tells of the injuries Murdoch violently inflicted on her.

She lifts up her left arm and drops it on her lap like a dead-weight.

"It's like carrying a bag of rocks ... I don't know how I'd manage," Ms Flewin said.

"You've just got to - she's a winner."

Ms Cheeseman shows her leg brace, special shoes and a four-pronged stick she relies on to walk.

"I think he should've got life then," she added. "What's in his mind? What's triggered him off to have this horrendous thing about women?"

Ms Cheeseman carries a MePAC around her neck, a personal alarm paid for by Victims of Crime Assistance in times of an emergency.

She also requires the help of carers to clean

her home and assist her with daily tasks which has been financed through the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Her "fun day" is Wednesday where she gets to enjoy some shopping and a coffee.

Ms Flewin says "every aspect" of her daughter's life has been affected.

"She needs the carpet when it comes to putting her shoe on because it's got to grip," she says. "(She) used to wear jeans; can't wear a bra,

it's got be crop top (and) jumpers that don't slide off her shoulder."

"People go 'how do you put eyeliner on with one hand?'" Ms Cheeseman added.

Ms Cheeseman regrets the day she met Murdoch through a phone chat line 'Hot Gossip' in September 2006.

Her marriage had broken down and being lonely the then 36-year-old found comfort in the monstrous man she thought "sounded like a nice man".

The pair exchanged messages and Ms Cheeseman arranged to pick him up in her car from the Bi-Lo car park in Pakenham.

They drank alcohol at her home, but when Murdoch checked every room to make sure no one else was home Ms Cheeseman began to feel uncomfortable.

"He went right through the whole house," she says. She thought: "What's going to happen next?"

She told Murdoch "How about you call a taxi and go" but he replied "Oh no you can drive me home."

Ms Cheeseman explained she couldn't drive as she would be over the alcohol limit.

He asked to have sex but when she refused Murdoch became enraged.

"All of a sudden he came towards me, went to grab my mobile ... I wasn't strong enough," Ms Cheeseman explained.

She spent six weeks in hospital as a result of his attack.

When they heard the news Kylie Blackwood had been murdered at the hands of Murdoch, Ms Cheeseman and her mother said they felt "more than sick."

"I think something has to be done about the justice system," Ms Flewin said.

Ms Cheeseman says quietly: "I might not have been here if I didn't open that door."

Maren Parker-Hamilton has spent countless hours creating her Victorian-style kitchen and music room, complete with hand painted ceramic figurines.

"My music box is dedicated to grandchildren who are a big part of most residents' lives," Ms Parker-Hamilton said.

While the resident of Lifestyle Berwick Waters admits the work involved was "very fiddly and demands a lot of concentration," she finds it "really relaxing."

Katherine Merbis was a long term member at Berwick Church of Christ. She was married in the church 1963 and her father painted the church interior. Pictured with her daughter Sue Nicholls. 195725 at Toorak Teachers College.

Ms Merbis taught at many local primary schools, particularly as an emergency teacher after the birth of her children, but her first teaching assignment was a class of 52 preps at a school in the Dandenong area.

She married a Dutch immigrant, Rien Merbis, in 1963, having met him at a church Christmas party.

He also lived in Brisbane Street, boarding with his aunt and uncle.

They built a home in Harkaway, and she continued to live there after his death in 2014 before moving to Villa Maria earlier this year.

They worked together in the area, building and renovating homes.

Although small in stature, she was a very capable painter and never minded getting her hands dirty.

Kather Merbis married a Dutch immigrant, Rien Merbis, in 1963, having met him at a church Christmas party.

She was hugely involved in Christian Religious Education in at least four local schools, and taught CRE at Harkaway Primary School (which was attended by her three daughters and three of her grandchildren) until 2014.

She was also a key member of the World Day of Prayer team, and would regularly invite neighbours and friends to church events.

In her later years the church's congregation has been large and much younger than her, but she had close friends of all ages both in the church and outside.

She was a wonderful neighbour and friend to everyone she met, as well as an amazing wife, mother and grandmother.

A fake email purporting to be from a Casey councillor has attempted to steal thousands of dollars from ratepayers.

Star News was among the fraudster's targets with the hoax email appearing to come from councillor Geoff Ablett on the 19 August stating he needed a loan of $5,700 to help a sick cousin in Istanbul, Turkey.

"I really hope you get this fast," the email reads.

"The hospital management is demanding for a deposit before they can carry out the surgery operation to save her life," it continued.

"I will really appreciate any amount you can loan me. I'll surely pay back as soon as I get back," it said.

Cr Ablett said he was pleased to be contacted by residents alerting him to the scam and had the issue fixed straight away.

"My advice to anyone is just be very careful of phone calls and emails," he said.

"I appreciate the support of people letting me know. If I see something suspicious to let people know," Cr Ablett said. "It's the way you work together to stop these awful people scamming. Everyone just has to be on the lookout.

The more people are aware of these scams the better, it can happen to anyone."

Mr Ablett said fortunately the scammers didn't receive any money through the fake email.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair Delia Rickard said it was best to assume scammers were everywhere.

"If you're ever in doubt, decline the contact or hang up the phone — it's often the safest option," she said.

Katherine Merbis' Christian faith was evident in her life right up until her death.

She was fondly farewelled by around 300 people at Berwick Church of Christ following her peaceful death at Villa Maria on August 1.

Katherine Merbis (Eyre/formerly Checcucci) was born in Tasmania and came to Berwick at the age of ten.

She was a leap year baby so although 83 when she died she only had 20 birthdays and had been overtaken in age by her eldest granddaughter.

The family settled at 31 Brisbane Street Berwick, in the White House on the hill, otherwise known as the Castle.

The home had been built around 1930 for an artist and was not very practical for a family.

The land has been subdivided and the house is still there although impossible to see from the road.

Katherine and her sisters began attending Sunday school at Berwick Church of Christ soon after they arrived in Berwick, a new experience for them.

Schooling was at Berwick Primary School, then later at Dandenong High School.

Although a keen student, she left school after four happy years to work at the SEC in Dandenong.

She made a decision to accept Christ in 1952 and was baptized at Berwick Church of Christ in 1953.

It was a small congregation at the time and many of her friends were elderly but it was always to be her church home.

Recently at the church's 150th anniversary she unveiled the plaque and was honoured as the longest serving member.

She loved teaching Sunday school at the church and eventually realised teaching was her calling.

Strong winds strike

By Brendan Rees Strong winds kept Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteers busy over the weekend of 17-18 August.

Crews helped Victoria Police at an incident whereby a car had rolled-over after it struck a tree on Craig Road in Pearcedale during the early hours of Saturday 18 August - "making an absolute mess of the car," the unit's spokesman Damian Burns said.

Paramedics treated the driver who was taken to Casey Hospital in a stable condition.

Volunteers used a chainsaw to dismantle the tree in under an hour to make the area safe for road users.

An eight-metre gum tree also threatened to topple onto a family home in Hampton Park

about 1pm on Sunday 18 August.

"The roots, on one side had lifted above the ground ... and was rocking," Mr Burns said.

Volunteers used chainsaws to trim the tree to reduce its weight and also set up a picket holdfast to the tree until arborists arrived at the Branton Drive property.

Wild winds blew polystyrene blocks from a building site in Clyde which SES crews had to tie down.

"When the job came through it was for loose debris so with the strong winds we naturally thought tree branches or the like," Mr Burns said.

Another job included a tree that fell onto the corner of Dandenong- Hastings Road and Robertsons Road in Pearcedale, causing a traffic hazard.

An elderly resident is fearful over slipping on an acorn after Casey Council has let a large Oak Tree grow in front of her Berwick home.

The 87-year-old woman says she has "exhausted every avenue" in attempt to have the tree removed.

Marion Limpus, who lives in Timbarra Estate, is concerned the 30-year-old tree will drop branches on her property or in worst case, on her.

"Some concrete has risen above my driveway and I could easily trip over it," she said.

"The tree has matured and it drops masses of acorns which I could quite easily slip on one.

"It's a huge worry. I already have a really bad leg."

Ms Limpus complained to Casey Council after an arborist recommended that the tree "should go".

"Council are not doing anything about it," she said.

"According to the arborist's report some of the branches could easily come down in strong winds, especially with the recent weather we've had."

Casey council recently inspected the nature strip tree following contact from Ms Limpus.

"Minor remedial pruning work, to remove a small branch, will be done before the end of August," Casey Council's city presentation manager David Richardson said."This branch does not pose an elevated risk of falling before its pruning."

Thanks to Cam Lucadou-Wells, once again, for his important story in the most recent edition of the Dandenong Star News exposing the authoritarian nature of local government, see "Public speak out against gag".

Many councilors, at Casey council, just like the Dandenong councillors, appear to think that councils exist for their own agenda; not the concerns of local residents.

Councils exist in a democratic system. This means more than leaving all the important decisions to elected councillors.

In a real democracy, as opposed to a fake democracy, public question time should be the first and foremost item on any council's meeting. Ratepayers and residents should all have the opportunity to verbally ask questions and seek clarification from councillors.without being subject to artificial constraints.

Casey council has a ridiculous situation where all questions from residents have to be approved - and validated - by their governance office before any questions can be allowed.

I believe this amounts to little more than what George Orwell would have described as thought control.

Ratepayers deserve better, especially when they pay Casey their CEOs and mayors very generous allowances from their rates money, taxes, and charges.

The present Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek needs to reform the anti-democratic instrument on which local government authority rests - the 1989 Local Government Act. It needs to be modernised to incorporate real democratic values and respect for residents and more - not less - public question time in future.

Shock at tree removal

By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren North man is saddened to find native shrubs close to his home butchered without warning.

John Alcock said he couldn't understand why council workers had cut down ti-trees next to a path along Belgrave -Hallam Road.

Mr Alcock explained he had contacted Casey Council about four months asking if they could lightly prune the trees but was shocked to find they had been hacked about six weeks ago.

"They put some idiot up there with not much brains with a chainsaw and went along and cut them off at the base," he said.

"I just think it's rotten vandalism quite frankly and expediency because they didn't want to come back and prune them in a few months' time. They only needed to be pruned back about a foot to 18 inches. All of a sudden they were gone ... absolute no need for it at all," Mr Alcock added.

Mr Alcock, a retired horticulturist, said he never received a call back from council.

"They just see it as fix the problem ...put it through the chipper and no one will even notice," he said. "They don't care about the environment."

Mr Alcock said the trees attracted native birds and hoped the area would be replanted.

Casey manager of city presentation David Richardson said works were recently undertaken to remove dead trees, weed species and poor performing trees along Hallam - Belgrave Road for vehicle and pedestrian clearance.

"This work was not undertaken specifically in response to the resident's pruning enquiry," Mr Richardson said. "After the resident's initial enquiry, we tried to make contact with him and left a message in response. Opportunities for further tree planting along Hallam - Belgrave Rd are being investigated as part of our ongoing tree planting program," he said.

Casey is a step ahead

By Taylah Eastwell Fitness enthusiasts can now step foot on the City of Casey's much anticipated 1001 steps fitness and walking track, with the newly developed Bayview Park officially opening on Wednesday morning.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon was present at the opening, telling those eager to try out the track that she felt privileged and proud to lead the community in celebrating the exciting event.

While inspired by Upper Ferntree Gully's steep 1000-step climb, Bayview Park provides a complete healthy lifestyle experience and is hoped to become a familiar destination for locals and tourists of all fitness abilities.

"Whether you're up for a physical challenge, or just want to take the dog for a leisurely walk, Bayview Park caters to a wide variety of uses and needs," Cr Stapledon said.

Council have spent over $800,000 in transforming the former landfill site into a vibrant new fitness park that provides sweeping views across Casey, Western Port and Port Phillip Bay however the works are not yet complete.

"This is the first stage of the Steps project with some other innovative and fun additions to come, and it is just the start of the transformation of Bayview Park as a whole," Cr Stapledon said.

Council is currently working on a master plan for the site to guide additional improvements and developments. There will be further opportunities for Casey residents to have their say about more enhancements to the public park in the future.

By Brendan Rees More than 600 members of Muslim community gathered at Bunjil Place on Sunday 11 August to celebrate the end of Ramandan - also known as Eid. The event, hosted by Islamic Education and Awareness of Casey Association (IEACA), consisted of prayers, a sermon on the importance of faith and community, and, afterwards, complementary Krisky Kreme donuts.

"This Eid was our first event held at Bunjil Place," IEACA spokesman James Randall said.

"We're pleased to say that the event went smoothly without a hitch, and council staff at Bunjil Place provided excellent service and assistance," Mr Randall said IEACA's aims were to serve the Muslim community and provide a focal point for the education, guidance and welfare of the youth as well as the future generations, especially for Muslims in the City of Casey.

Red-light driver rams cars

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A disqualified driver from Cranbourne has pleaded guilty to recklessly driving through a red light, crashing into two cars and causing a police officer to fall from the rear of her car.

Damla Ozcelik was pulled over by police after being detected speeding at 96 km/h in a 60 km/h zone outside Dandenong High School on Princes Highway, Dandenong on 23 January, a court heard.

Ozcelik's VW Passat stopped near the corner of Lonsdale Street and Foster Street, with a police car parked behind her.

As a police officer approached, Ozcelik heavily revved the engine and lurched forward, ramming a Honda Jazz and a Holden Barina.

Passengers in her car shouted that "It's the police, f***ing go."

The police member ordered her to stop.

Fearing she would reverse onto him in traffic,

he jumped onto the back of the car.

Ozcelik's vehicle revved, rising in the air as it continued to drive into the rammed vehicles.

The police member fell from the car, whose wheels continued to spin just centimetres from the head of one of the victim drivers, the court heard.

The Passat crashed to ground, pulling a large amount of debris from another car. It

pushed between cars in the two lanes, damaging both and accelerating through a red light, police told the court.

Other drivers were said to have been "traumatised" by the incident.

In a police interview, a "regretful" Ozcelik described her driving as reckless, dangerous and stupid, but refused to identify her passengers.

Among Ozcelik's five charges was breaching a community corrections order at the time.

She had been sentenced to the CCO in July 2018 for trafficking methamphetamine.

A defence lawyer told the court that the mother of two had been engaging in drug treatment on the order, though not turning up for other appointments.

Her serious anxiety issues as a victim of trauma were "paramount" in this case, the lawyer said.

She had stopped the car. Then she became scared after the police officer banged on the car, and overwhelmed by her friends' yelled exhortations, the lawyer argued.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett noted the disqualified driver's "appalling" history including dangerous driving, drug-driving, failing to stop for police, and driving dangerously or negligently while pursued by police.

"There's a pattern of behaviour that your client has shown that's consistent with her prior history.

"She shouldn't have been driving."

As a result, the sentencing priority was shifting from Ozcelik's rehabilitation to the protection of the community, Ms Hartnett said.

Ozcelik was disqualified from driving for two years.

She was bailed for further sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 9 October.

Stabbing accused was on a ‘bender’, court hears

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 25-year-old Narre Warren man accused of a roadside stabbing in Blind Bight and trafficking illicit mushrooms and cannabis has been granted bail.

Kerry Bender was driving a grey Nissan Pulsar erratically, swerving and overtaking at alternating speeds on the South Gippsland Highway on 20 July, according to his male victim.

The victim later saw Bender arguing with an unknown person while parked in a running lane on Baxter-Tooradin Road, Blind Bight, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court.

The victim approached Bender to placate him. The pair scuffled, in which Bender alleg-

edly stabbed the victim twice in the upper abdomen and slashed his palm.

Bender fled from the scene in his car. The victim was transported to The Alfred hospital, requiring stitches for his wounds.

As a result, the victim, unable to perform lifting duties, was sacked from his new job, the court heard.

Later that morning, police raided Bender's home, seizing four juvenile cannabis plants as well as bags of illicit mushrooms and cannabis from his bedroom.

The alleged stabbing weapon had not been recovered, nor had it been noticed by the victim during the fight, police told the court.

Police remand liaison officer Sgt Chris Marlow, in opposing bail, said that the wounds ap-

peared to be caused by an "edged weapon".

He said that Bender posed a risk to community safety from his apparent drug-impaired driving and use of a weapon.

The seized drugs were of a traffickable quantity on weight alone, he said.

Bender, who was remanded since the raid, told police that there was a fight between him and the victim but couldn't remember stabbing him.

He smoked a large quantity of cannabis and extracted oil from the mushrooms for personal use. He gave cannabis to friends if they asked for it, he allegedly told police.

The court heard Bender suffered anxiety, depression, ADHD as well as an acquired brain injury.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett said the bail application was a "difficult case", noting the serious and apparently unprovoked assault and concerns for public safety.

On the other hand was Bender's youthfulness, supportive family and a lack of criminal history, as well as available supervision from the CISP bail program.

"The risk can be ameliorated by appropriate conditions."

Bender was bailed to a fixed address on a night curfew and CISP monitoring. He was ordered not to leave Victoria or contact prosecution witnesses.

He was set to appear on bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 September.

Sharing the joy of culture

By Brendan Rees Students of Narre Warren South P-12 College have united after gathering on Tuesday 20 August to celebrate Multicultural Day. The day featured performances by an African dance group, the talented Hairspray team, Pasifika choir, and Afghani dances.

Four food trucks attended selling kebabs, little Dutch pancakes and traditional Maori food.

"Cultural diversity is a feature of the College community with at least 50 ethnic groups being represented speaking 64 languages," student voice and agency spokeswoman Jo Keating said.

Students and staff were encouraged to dress in traditional and cultural clothing, and also brought traditional food to share.

The performances began with a presentation of a wooden plaque to the principal Mr Rob Duncan recognising the original custodians of the land.

Year 11 student voice captain Eddie Toleafoa came up with the idea for the day after suggesting the school needed a forum to celebrate their cultures.

Ace goes in the Lions den Mega footy fan Ace inspired a whole team and fan community when his wish came true to be a part of the Brisbane Lions' inner sanctum.

The 18-year-old of Narre Warren South has a condition called dystonia. He is completely reliant on his electric wheelchair and can only communicate through an electronic device.

None of this stopped him from motivating the Brisbane Lions footy team to win during a match at The Gabba recently.

He visited their pre-game training session after he was given the chance to have his dream realised through Make-A-Wish Australia.

Ace had the entire group in stitches with his funny wise cracks and inspired them with telling his story.

It was a special moment for everyone when his favourite player Daniel Rich presented him with his very own Lions guernsey.

The Lions coach then asked Ace's mum Raylene Bryans if they could have the honour of her and Ace doing the coin toss at the upcoming game.

They also thanked her for everything she does for 'their main man Ace'.

In the team's pre game pep talk, the Lions coach inspired the players with quotes Ace made when he visited their training session.

"The team had to win for themselves but most of all they had to win for Ace," the coach said.

And it worked. The Lions won!

The crowd was on their feet cheering for Ace and even the coach came up to him and his family and said it was all because of him that they won.

"We can't put into words how happy Ace was meeting the whole Brisbane Lions crew," Raylene said.

White Night fight fears

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Fresh details have emerged at a Dandenong court about two youth gangs planning a "retaliation fight" during the White Night festival on 23-24 August.

Police had "strong intelligence" of a planned clash between South-East-based gang Next Gen Shooters (NGS) and a West-based rival Blood Drill Killers at the event in Melbourne CBD, a bail hearing at the court heard.

Sixteen males from the South East were charged over an armed affray in Footscray during police raids on the morning of 20 August.

The charged teenagers were aged between 15-18 from Hallam, Clyde North, Berwick, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Doveton and Dandenong.

Police bailed most of the group, except three who were already on bail at the time Allegedly among them was Koang Wuordol, 18, of Pakenham, who applied for bail on charges of affray and violent disorder at a Dandenong Magistrates' Court hearing on 20 August.

Police were opposed to bail due to a lack of compelling reasons, being a flight risk, and an unacceptable risk of re-offending, interfering with witnesses and endangering public safety.

Police say Wuordol was among about 20-plus NGS "African males" who entered through the rear door and forced entry into a second-storey room at a "community cafe" in Barkly Street Footscray about 8.20pm on 31 July.

Armed with sharpened sticks, metal poles and kitchen knives, the group assaulted four occupants in the room and damaged the room, Sen Const Adrian Farano of Taskforce Wayward told the court.

Wuordol's role in the attack was unknown at this stage, Sen Const Farano said.

The victims, who received injuries, had also refused to co-operate with police.

However, police intelligence suggested that a "retaliation fight" at White Night was planned as a result of the attack, the court heard.

"Our belief is the parties know each other," Sen Const Farano said.

"It seems to have started from a very small tit-for-tat. Someone's said something about someone else and it's grown from there."

The NGS gang members were linked on social media or from the same schools, he told the court.

"The accused has made considerable effort

to travel from one side of Melbourne to the other to take part (in the Footscray affray)."

He said other cafe patrons were "shaken" by the incident and afraid the group would return.

The attackers filmed and live-streamed the incident on social media, with police analysing video from mobile phones seized during the 20 August raids.

Wuordol was on bail at the time for cannabis possession and giving police a false name in Pakenham on 25 July.

He had been bailed on a night curfew, and to not contact the four co-charged associates.

All five were later charged over the Footscray affray, the court heard.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett said she would not bail Wuordol without suitable accommodation and Youth Justice supervision.

Wuordol was remanded in custody for a "thorough" Youth Justice assessment and further bail hearing on 21 August.

A 17-year-old from the South East was granted bail on Youth Justice supervision at a children's court, despite police opposition.

He had already been on bail on charges of affray and assault by kicking over an attack on a lone victim in central Dandenong on 11 May. On 20 August, a magistrate granted the 17-year-old due to his age, lack of convictions and Youth Justice supervision.

He was granted bail on condition he didn't associate with the co-charged or contact witnesses.

The teen was ordered onto a night curfew and not to attend Footscray CBD or White Night sites - Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens, Birrarung Marr and Melbourne CBD. About seven NGS gang members were reportedly involved in a stabbing and assault of three males at a Dandenong fish-and-chip shop on 14 August. No arrests have yet been made.

In a media statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Sheehy, of North West Metro Regional Crime Squad, said police would not tolerate public violent incidents that put the safety of others at risk.

"It's really concerning to see so many young people facing court on serious charges including affray and violent disorder.

"We can't forget the impact violent crime has on the rest of the community, it causes an unacceptable level of harm and fear."

Kambrya leads on sustainability

By Danielle Kutchel Kambrya College has been recognised for reducing its environmental impact through the State Government's ResourceSmart Schools program.

Kambrya has achieved its second star as part of Sustainability Certification and saving over $30,000 through their involvement in the ResourceSmart Schools program. The school's 2Star certification achievement demonstrates their commitment to sustainability.

Schools participating in the program are awarded up to five stars for completing modules in relation to water, waste, energy and biodiversity and are provided with free assistance from sustainability experts.

Keith Perry, principal of Kambrya College, said he was proud of the efforts of students, staff and school community.

"Achieving two stars in the ResourceSmart Schools awards is a fantastic achievement for Kambrya College but we don't want to stop

Pillar of Hampton Park

By Andrew Cantwell Casey Council took a break from its normal routine at Tuesday night’s meeting to acknowledge the passing of Hampton Park stalwart Ken Reedy.

Mr Reedy died on Monday after a long period of ill health.

He was life member of several clubs and organisations in and around Hampton Park, and was the former City of Cranbourne’s Citizen of the Year in 1983.

The KM Reedy Reserve in Hampton Park is named in his honour.

River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith gave tribute at the start of the council meeting to a man he’d come to know and respect over decades of service to the Hampton Park community.

After his address, Cr Smith asked for a minute’s silence, and that the city considers lowering the flag outside Bunjil Place to half-mast on the day of Mr Reedy’s funeral service late next week.

Following is an edited transcript of Cr Smith’s tribute.

“I rise tonight to acknowledge the passing of a very important citizen of Casey, and particularly of the Hampton Park area, and that’s Mr Ken Reedy.

“For those who don’t know Ken, you certainly know his reserve, the KM Reedy Reserve in Hampton Park - it’s been there for a long, long time in recognition of his long-standing work in the community as a volunteer, property owner and farmer in Hampton Park.

“Ken was 90 years of age. He passed away yesterday after a long period of ill health, sur-

He had some family who were away and it almost seemed like he was waiting for them to come back to finally leave us - and the family were very happy that they were able to be there with him yesterday.

“Ken was 90 years of age when he passed.

He lived in Hampton Park his entire life. He was born in Hampton Park, raised in Hampton Park and lived there until his death.

“The family had a property originally 120 acres of dairy farm, reduced over the years, until in recent years Joy and Ken were able to remain in their home, but on a smaller piece of land.

“He’s well known in Hampton Park for helping being a founding member and person who established the Hampton Park Progress Association, the Hampton Park Fire Brigade and Hampton Park Football Club, and he was very heavily involved - he was a live member of all of those - and he was very heavily involved with the Uniting Church in Hampton Park.

“He attended Hampton Park Primary School - and I remember he was very proud to be there on the day we relocated it and set it up as a Men’s Shed. We’d all prefer it to be back in the school and used, but that was the next best outcome. And he attended Caulfield Park Tech in his secondary years.

“I’ll leave it there.

“Madam Mayor, I know that your office is arranging some flowers to be send to the family - his wife Joy, his very devoted, loving wife of I think nearly 70 years, it might be. Cr Aziz and I visited their home a number of years ago, not that many years ago, in 2012 to celebrate a significant wedding anniversary and they were very pleased to have us visit, and it was an honour to be able to do that.

“The funeral will be at some stage towards the end of next week, and details will be out when that is known. But we certainly will miss Ken. “From a personal point of view, in a way he had every reason not to like me because I knocked off his best friend off council many years ago.

“1993 I think it was, I stood for council in City of Cranbourne and his long-time friend Arthur Wren, who was indeed a gentleman similar to Ken, I put him out of council that election.

“But Ken never held a grudge, and he was always a gentleman to me, and he was always a good adviser.

“Ken would ring me up when he had an issue - and you knew it must be serious if Ken rings you - and he would never say this is what you should do, but you’d know what he felt and what he thought was the right thing to do, and he would let you know that.

“And he was just that sort of gentleman, he wasn’t pushy and he was so well respected by that community, so we will miss him.

“We have the reserve named after him, so that’ll be there forever, and we send condolences to the family and all his friends in the area and the Hampton Park community.”

Good sports come to the party with big gift for little aths

By Danielle Kutchel In the ultimate unboxing, Berwick Little Athletics members finally got to open their new equipment on Monday after receiving a grant from Coles to upgrade their sports gear.

Berwick Little Athletics Centre received a $4900 grant from the supermarket giant thanks to funds raised through the sale of Coles' Community Chiller Bags.

The centre applied for a grant to cover new equipment to replace ageing older gear, including high jump rods and support stands,

shot puts, discuses, javelins, measuring tapes and a starting pistol.

Centre president Dan Langelaan said the grant had been a "big help".

"This grant means we can update our ageing equipment to support our growth in little athletics this year.

"Berwick Little Athletics experienced a 28 percent membership growth this season which has resulted in having a shortage of essential athletics equipment to run our events efficiently.

"The grant from Coles will allow us to continue to grow and provide an affordable and inclusive sport to the community."

The club has 480 young athletes across 11 age groups of mixed genders and is the second largest, and fastest growing, in the region.

Registrations are now open for the 2019/20 little athletics season, which is set to commence on Saturday 5 October. Berwick Little Athletics will be hosting a free come and try day on the grand final eve public holiday, Friday 27 September. More details are available at berwicklac.com.au.

Kick up your heels: Hit musical set to wow audiences

By Brendan Rees A dedicated group of performers from Casey and Cardinia are putting the finishing touches to their latest huge hit Broadway production.

From this Saturday, the crew from Cardinia Performing Arts Company (CPAC) will perform the musical Kinky Boots which follows the true story of a failing show company.

Lee Geraghty of the CPAC says the cast have been working hard with a brilliant mix of costumes, orchestra, and choreography all set for the opening night on Saturday 24 August at the Cranbourne Community Theatre.

The show features the incredible score by Cindi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein.

Ms Geraghty says director Scott Hili's eye for detail has been amazing, who also helped coordinate in the creation of costumes audiences will see on stage.

"His love of feathers and sequins even more amazing," she says.

"I thank him for all that he has done. I would also like to thank our talented musical director Po Goh who has worked tirelessly with the cast and band to bring the whole production together," Ms Geraghty said.

"Both the cast and orchestra sound fantastic. We welcome back our choreographer Kristy Hamshare who had the unenviable task of choreographing men in heels and I must say with great success.

"Huge thanks once again to our set builders Ash and Frank for all their hours of hard work to bring to life Scott's creative set design," she added. "Nothing is ever too hard for them. They are both amazing and we are truly blessed to have them!"

By Jessica Anstice Comedian Akmal Saleh is heading to Hallam.

He’ll perform at the Hallam Hotel on Thursday 22 August as part of his Transparent Tour.

Akmal has performed in movies, sketches, stand up and TV shows, as a radio DJ and talk show host, and is a published author.

He immigrated to Australia from Egypt with his family nearly 30 years ago.

“My parents didn’t tell us where we were going,” he said.

“We thought it was two hours away.

“Twenty hours later, we got off the plane.

We were on another planet.”

Akmal’s Arab heritage steers his comedy to issues of religion, honesty, looks at modernday life.

He has appeared at festivals around the world including Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, New Zealand Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Akmal wrote and starred in the feature film You Can’t Stop the Murders’ to critical acclaim and also the cult hit TV show The 40 Foot Show.

He hosted The Wrong Way Home drive radio show on the Nova network and achieved the station’s highest ever drive-time ratings.

The Amendment comes into operation on the date this notice is published in the Government Gazette.

The Amendment rezones the northern part of the land at 800 Berwick–Cranbourne Road, Clyde North (Lot 2, PS730842C) from the Urban Growth Zone – Schedule 3 (UGZ3) to the Urban Floodway Zone (UFZ), and the southern part of the land from the UFZ to the UGZ3, and adjusts the boundaries of the Land Subject to Inundation Overlay by removing the overlay from land below the 1-in-100 year ood level.

Casey is gallant in defeat

By Romy Stephens The Casey Demons have finished runners-up in the Victorian Netball League after going down to a relentless Geelong Cougars outfit in the grand final last Wednesday night.

The 69-55 win for the Cougars was a testament to the team's persistent defensive pressure and composure in attack for the entire night.

The game started off with very little separating the two sides. Despite some errant passes from the Demons, the Cougars struggled to easily penetrate into the goal ring, having to reset the ball back to their defenders numerous times.

A perfectly-timed deflection on a shot at goal from goalkeeper Karli Foster set up a twogoal lead for the Demons at the end of the first quarter.

But it seemed the Cougars were just warming up as they came out in the second quarter a completely new side.

Influenced by the likes of prolific attackers Vanessa Augustini and Julia Wooley, the Cougars opened up the court in their offensive end and began to hit shooting targets with ease.

Meanwhile, the Demons started to feel the heat in their attacking end with former Diamond Erin Bell being starved of opportunities and goal shooter Emma Ryde unable to dominate aerially as she so often does.

Once the Cougars took the lead in the second quarter, there was no turning back. They began to dismantle their frustrated opponents and blew the lead out to 16 goals during the term.

The Demons tried to peg back quick goals during the final quarter by quickly delivering long bomb passes into Ryde, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars held onto a 14-goal lead by the end of the game.

Despite the disappointing loss, Casey's co-captain Karli Foster said she couldn't be prouder of a side that came so far in its first season.

"To have a great bunch of girls alongside me, especially in our first year at Casey, it's been really great and it's been such an awesome ride," she said.

"There have not been many down times, it's always been really positive and a really great culture.

"I think that's what's really helped us to get there."

The Demons will now look to start their 2020 campaign with trials set to take place on 15 and 22 September.

With the club announcing itself as one of the top teams in the competition this year,

Erin Bell takes a long shot at goal.

Foster said she believes Casey is now a destination club for other players.

"I've been approached personally by friends and other people in other teams wanting to come over," she said.

"We've achieved a lot in the first year so obviously people are going to see that and I think they're going to want to come.

"It's a testament to all the people in the background. They've really made our first year a really positive one."

But it's not just the club's on-court success that will likely attract other players.

In its first year, the VNL side has formed a solid partnership with the Melbourne Football Club and Casey Demons Football Club.

The collaboration was established to help the netball program develop grassroots player pathways and a stronger connection to the local community.

That strong community bond was already evident on Wednesday night with a massive turnout of supporters donning the navy blue and red club colours at the grand final.

By Tyler Lewis SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 ROUND 18 Keysborough's stirring, eight-point comefrom-behind victory wasn't enough to claim top spot over Springvale Districts on the weekend, 13.10 (88) to 12.8 (80).

The Burras trailed at every break but stormed home with a strong victory in the final round of the year.

Tim Edwards was super for Keysborough with five majors while Matt Wetering slotted four for the Districts.

However, the win didn't come with the margin the Burras needed to claim top spot, and was soured by an all-in scuffle following the final siren including players and even the crowd.

Skye, meanwhile, has caused a boilover in the final round of its season in an upset over the Doveton Eagles, 9.12 (66) to 7.12 (54).

Cameron Carmody booted four for the Eagles in the narrow loss while Keenan Hatch was important for the Bombers.

Fortunately for the Eagles, the loss didn't do any damage to their finals position as they sit fourth on the ladder.

Peter Dye (five goals) kicked another handful while Luke Behin was named the best for the Redbacks. The Redbacks sit four wins clear atop the ladder heading into their semi-final next week.

Clayton got the jump on Endeavour Hills in the opening half and coasted to an 11.11 (77) to 3.11 (29) victory. Ben Holland stood strong for the Hills in the big loss.

Despite the defeat, the Hills still sit in third on the ladder and will take on Ashwood in next week's elimination final.

DIVISION 4 ROUND 18 Lyndale won the battle of the bottom against Dandenong, 23.17 (155) to 11.6 (72).

Lyndale was wasteful early but moved on from the sloppy start to pile on 21 majors after the first break.

Trent Day was stupendous with seven majors while Brett Tosh was also important in the solid victory.

Hallam, meanwhile, recorded an important win over second-placed South Yarra, 10.5 (65) to 2.11 (23).

Big test awaits the Lions SOUTH EAST WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 14 DIVISION 1 Cranbourne and Seaford will meet for the second time in a fortnight, with the two clubs set to go head-to-head in the semi-final at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Seaford got the best of their final home and away encounter on Saturday, however, in a big confidence booster ahead of the crunch final, 3.14 (32) to 2.3 (15).

The Tigers were plagued by inaccuracy, but eventually got things on their own terms and ran away convincing winners.

Emily Browning and Laura Robinson were in the best for the Eagles.

DIVISION 2 Beaconsfield finished the season on a high note, knocking over the Eastern Devils in Mulgrave on Sunday, 3.4 (22) to 2.3 (15).

The Eagles - who finish with 6-8 season record and finish just outside the finals - clawed their way back from an early deficit to bank a huge win that will give them confidence heading into the pre-season.

Cranbourne, meanwhile, geared up for its semi-final against Seaford with a win against that very side on Saturday, 9.4 (58) to 3.6 (24).

Sheridan Holland and Alana Bell made life difficult for the Tigers with three goals each.

DIVISION 3 Pakenham will look to capitalise on a wonderful season in SEWF Division 3 when the topof-the-ladder Lions take on Karingal in the second semi-final at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

The Lions were held scoreless in the first term by a fired up Bulldogs outfit that needed to win to keep its finals hopes alive. The Bulldogs were ferocious at the ball and played with great enthusiasm but the Lions held firm to trail by just two points at quarter time.

Coach Tom Bluhm asked his players to lift in the second quarter and they all responded, with inaccuracy in front of goal - a common curse for this team - costing the Lions from being a little closer than the 11-point deficit at

the main break.

The third quarter was once again a real arm wrestle before Mornington extended its 17-point lead at three-quarter time to 37 points at the final siren.

Sage Hahn kicked the only goal for the Lions, early in the third term, while Ros Cook, Mel Stocker, Renee Carter, Sophie Gray, Zoe Loudon and Chloe Nagel all had an influence around the ground.

This week’s second semi-final sees the Lions take on the Bulls, a team the Lions have conquered twice during the regular season.

The Demons’ season was on the canvas on several occasions in the past month of football, but after a strong finish to the season, winning three of their past four, they now wait for the result of Box Hill and Collingwood in the final round to secure a spot in the finals.

In their final home and away match of the year, the Demons met the developing Frankston side in treacherous conditions.

Casey started the match like a side that was desperate to play finals. Toby Bedford’s rundown tackle and skipper Mitch White’s goal in the opening minutes set the scene for what loomed to be a hungry Casey outfit.

The rain came at the start of the second term as did the Dolphins, with Corey Rich slamming one home from beyond the arc and Jimmy Miller pegging back the lead to within a straight kick.

But makeshift forward Jack Hutchins steadied the ship with his second immediately. A late second major to Corey Rich had the Demons margin trimmed to five points at the main break.

The conditions worsened over the interval and goals were to be cherished in the second half.

Liam Wale-Buxton snagged his first in the opening minutes of the third term, but as the conditions caused the match to be a contested slog - it was the only major for 50 minutes of play.

With nothing to lose, Frankston surged late in the match to send a scare through the Casey camp. Miller kicked his second for the Dolphins before the Demons held on to record another thrilling win, 4.14 (38) to 4.8 (32).

Casey will have an interesting week on the track with its destiny now out of its hands, but coach Sam Radford says it will be a normal week as usual for his boys.

“We will just have to see how it goes,” he said.

“We will prepare, we have the bye so we have to prepare for a normal build up.

“We will just keep training, and what happens, happens.”

“I don’t get excited (when it rains), I want to see them play good attacking footy,” he said.

“But I know we can play in any conditions, so it certainly doesn’t worry us when it does rain.

“We know it will then be a contested game and we are pretty used to that, we are pretty comfortable with it.”

Radford aims to develop his Casey listed players throughout the year as well as aid the Melbourne-listed players into developing into true senior footballers, a tactic he believes has worked on a lot of his players.

“We have had a lot (of improvement),” he said.

“Jack Hutchins has been a key defender then gone as a forward and been outstanding, a lot of our young guys - Tom Freeman keeps improving.

“Even some of the older guys, Luke Tynan was probably struggling at the start of the year, and he has had a fantastic finish.

“I am just really happy with the depth our list and how hard every one is working.”

Casey currently sits inside the top eight, but with a bye will wait for the result of Box Hill and Collingwood to decide whether the Demons feature in September. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

The class in the forward half in the third quarter saw the Wickers take the game away from the Bloods - who were still matching the visitors in the contest - kicking four goals to one, before easing their way home in the final term.

Harry Money slotted three for the Wickers to be a constant threat to the Bloods, Madi Andrews' excellent recent form continued through the middle, while Luke JellymanTurner provided his customary drive.

Down at Holm Park, Beaconsfield showed little mercy on the way to a 196-point win against Healesville, 33.19 (217) to 3.3 (21).

The Eagles had winners all across the park, with Matthew Johnson (six goals), Sean Dwyer (five) and VFL-listed Riley Verbi (five) all filling their boots.

Woori Yallock also picked up a big win, controlling its clash with Upwey Tecoma at home, 23.20 (158) to 6.16 (52).

In Division 1, the noise continues to get louder at Pakenham.

With the minor premiership within its grasp with just round left to play before a crunch finals campaign, there's some expectation building for the famous football club on the Princes Highway.

But try telling coach Ash Green that. He wants his players to remain focused week to week, and block out the external noise as they continue to build momentum.

"The club's pretty low key, to be honest," he told the News after Saturday's 33-point win against Doveton, 12.18 (90) to 8.9 (57).

"We hadn't really discussed finals until really after the Warburton game, only because we had two important games in Doveton, and then Officer this week.

"It's hard for any player to not think finals, but you have to be still playing well in the home and away games as well, and to Doveton's credit, they were really good, they pushed us.

"We'll probably play them again at some stage, and we look forward to that, but we now focus on Officer this week."

The Lions got the better of another terrific football side in the Doves at AJ Robinson Oval on Saturday, controlling the game - particularly after half time - to move one step closer to earning the week off in the first week of finals.

It was an almighty scrap early, highly contested and with very little space to move, with the Lions making the most of the home side's turnovers in the first term to take in a comfortable 15-point lead.

While the Lions didn't fully get the game on their terms until midway through the third term - largely due to some inaccuracy in front of the big sticks - an unanswered four-goal third term saw them surge to a 36-point three quarter time lead, icing the game as the game opened up in the final term.

Once again, the Lions were incredibly even across the ground, with Jake Thompson, Joel Sarlo and Rhys Nelson all named in the best, while Hope and Stewart combined for five goals and Chris Cardona provided his usual drive.

For the Doves, George was a shining light, while the likes of Matt Stapleton, Andrew Parker Matthew Boyd and on-baller Mitch Cotter all battled valiantly.

The race for the minor premiership, however, is set to be fought on the final day of the home and away season on Saturday, with Monbulk keeping in touch with a win against Mount Evelyn, 12.15 (87) to 6.16 (52).

In the contest on Saturday, the Rovers were right with the Hawks for three quarters, and if not for inaccuracy - particularly in the first half - could have nearly taken a potentially matchwinning lead.

But a six-goal final term sealed the deal for the Hawks, with Michael Langworth snagging five goals to be best afield, while Daimon Kift was named the best for the Rovers.

In the remaining matches, Emerald was too good for Belgrave, 18.15 (123) to 7.10 (52), while Officer's recent run of extraordinary scoring continued with a barnstorming win against Warburton Millgrove, 25.9 (159) to 3.6 (24).

OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW Narre Warren just has that extra gear and, whenever challenged, rises to a whole new level.

The Magpies were tested against an in-form Cranbourne side fresh off an upset win against Berwick, but motored away in ominous signs in the second half, ahead of what will be a mammoth finals campaign, 20.18 (138) to 7.8 (50).

The Eagles on their home deck stuck with Matt Shinners' group for the first half, and in a match baked in sunshine - a stark contrast to the horrendous conditions over the last month - both sides collectively combined for 14 goals and played some free-flowing football, albeit with some mistakes.

But it was that ability to just take the game away in one fell swoop that makes the Magpies such a force to reckoned with, kicking 12 goals to one after half time, including seven in a scintillating third term that completely blew the game apart.

With so many midfield and forward options, it appears as if the Magpies have almost every base covered, with 11 individual goal kickers, including multiples to Trent Cody (four), Dan Jackson (three) and Dylan Quirk, Jake Richardson, Thomas Toner and Michael Collins with two each making life difficult for an Eagles defense missing skipper and champion defender Brandon Osborne again.

Liam Myatt - returning from a successful stint at VFL level with Frankston - was best afield and showcased his immense class in the midfield with star onballer Brad Scalzo playing a different role as he manages a shoulder injury, while the run and spread of Josh Tonna, Trent Cody and Nathan Foote proved a handful.

Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners praised Myatt's ability to adapt to club and VFL level after starting the season slowly at the Magpies.

"It's been one of those things, he's been at Frankston and you've got guys trying to understand two game plans," he said.

"Liam did really struggle early doors, but at Frankston he's been playing midfield, and with (Brad) Scalzo being injured with a shoulder, we thought we'd play him in the middle.

"He's been very good."

Shinners said it was frustrating to allow Cranbourne back in the game on multiple occasions in the second half, but was pleased that the tinkering done at the main break yielded a strong response.

"We turned the ball over early at probably critical times that allowed them back in, and at moments where we had them on the back foot," he said.

"So we changed a few things around at half time, and they got one within the first 20 seconds, but our set ups and ball movement was clean, and really good.

"And we shared the ball around, and had plenty of goal kickers which is great."

Olinda Ferny Creek, meanwhile, battled hard to bring down the mighty Berwick on their home deck, but the class of the Wickers won out in an intriguing clash, 13.10 (88) to 6.19 (55).

The all-important ability to convert opportunities in front of goal was the difference between the two sides, with the Bloods registering 25 scoring shots to 23 but ultimately falling five goals short.

Despite the Wickers surging out to a 20-point quarter time lead, the Bloods actually equalled the south east reigning premiers in scoring shots, and could have very easily snatch the lead in a terrific second quarter, however conversion hurt them as they kicked

Peter Galo is a champion Over the past few weeks, one question has been asked across Queensland, South Australia and Victoria... which state has the fastest straight track racing greyhound?

On Sunday, 18 August the answer was revealed.

The Healesville Greyhound Association hosted the inaugural National Straight Track Championship at its picturesque Don Road venue.

The question was being asked as the eight runners - six from interstate and two Victoria representatives - headed to the boxes. And it didn’t take long to get an answer.

In fact, it came in record time as the local Hoddles Creek-bred, Devon Meadows-trained Victorian - and regular winner at Healesville -

Peter Galo raced away by four lengths in a new track record time of 18.65 seconds.

Queensland-trained Certification finished second with another Victorian, Myrniong And All, filling third position.

Healesville connections of Dusty’s Charlie (Queensland) should be proud of their runner finishing a very creditable fourth in the event after having a few hurdles to overcome in the week leading up to the race.

With a large crowd in attendance to watch this new event on the racing calendar and the presentations to trainer Garry Selkrig after the event, it was a very exciting time.

Peter Galo is now looking to contest the Healesville Cup heats on 1 September.

Having already won a Group 2 event and

If Sunday’s performance and time is anything to go by, he might add another $47,000 in

September at cup time.

Stingrays downed, but remain valiant right to the finish

By Tyler Lewis With a heavier significance on performances in the big games, the most important football matches in the NAB League for draftees now begin.

While premierships and finals victories are a bonus, the aim is to get individuals playing their best footy for those desired spots on AFL lists.

Despite going down to the Geelong Falcons on the weekend, 15.9 (99) to 9.14 (68), the Stingrays are playing decent footy under some difficult circumstances.

Those difficult circumstances being a virus flowing through the club and a bundle of injuries to some important figures.

On Sunday, the Falcons got off to a fast start before Jack Toner and Jordan Andrews pegged the Rays back into the contest with strong goals, while Luca Goonan brought his

own Sherrin - collecting 11 disposals before the huddle.

Another term of poor goal kicking hurt the Rays in the second quarter, kicking 1.6 to Geelong’s 5.2.

With the rain wreaking havoc in the third term, the deficit seemed to be out of reach in the contested conditions.

But there was still time for some of the prospects to indicate their resilience and poise under adversity.

Lachlan Williams provided a very potent option forward of the ball, booting three final term goals while Will Lewis and Will Bravo capped off a four quarter performance.

Dandenong coach Nick Cox is happy his players are learning about the competition each week and was pleased with the performances of some of his players; as well as looking forward to their hunger against Murray in the do or die clash on Sunday.

“We didn’t get away with a win but I think the negative thing was we didn’t stay in the contest and compete for long enough periods,” he said.

“The positive is I think the young men are starting to realise that you have to be at your best against every opposition you come up against in the comp each week.

“I thought our last quarter was good, we competed really well - it wasn’t pretty but we can get a positive out of that.

“Will Lewis was really good in his first game in a couple years, Jack Toner was good again, he was really consistent through the whole four quarters.

“Luca Goonan was good inside again and Hayden Young I thought again led the way with his game.

“The first game in Liam Scott from Haileybury and Noble Park had some pretty good

moments as well - there is always positives so hopefully we gain some momentum during the week and can come out and play with some energy against the Bushrangers.“ It is the time of year that the word opportunity is being used extensively in context of the draftees chance to perform in the important matches, and Cox believes the Wildcard Round serves as yet another opportunity for his side to show their ability and progress further.

“It is opportunity,” he said.

“Every recruiter and everybody who is important will be casting their eyes over every game.

“We talk about the opportunity for the 18-year-olds but it is also a good opportunity for the 16, 17-year-olds for years to come.

“It (finals and wildcard round) is a good opportunity to showcase your talent against good opposition in a final.“
