Police pursuit

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice-high disqualified driver has led police on a wild high-speed pursuit on EastLink before crashing into a car and hiding out at a junior football club match, a court heard.

Michael Lan Youn Foong, 34, of Endeavour Hills, also pleaded guilty to dropping a burnout and fishtailing within two metres of police officers as he fled from Frog Hollow Reserve car park on a separate occasion.

On a Sunday afternoon on 14 April, an unmarked police car observed Lan's silver Mazda overtaking at a fast speed without indicating until he slowed behind "medium"-dense traffic on EastLink in Dandenong South.

When police turned on lights and sirens, Lan accelerated down the left emergency lane and "dangerously swerved in and out of traffic" at more than 150 km/h.

He caused several near-misses with other vehicles before police abandoned the pursuit due to safety concerns, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

Minutes later, a member of the public reported Lan dangerously tailgating and overtaking in Carrum Downs. He rear-ended another car at the corner of Wedge and Dandenong-Frankston roads.

Lan and a female passenger fled on foot from the crash, trying to blend in with the crowd at a junior football match at Carrum Downs oval.

The pair was arrested in the clubrooms, as Lan was texting someone to pick him up from the oval.

According to police, Lan admitted to having two 'hits' of ice that morning, and tested posi-

tive for drug-driving. Knuckledusters and four clip-seal bags of ice residue were found in the Mazda.

Nearly 3am on 2 February, Lan was discovered by police standing in darkness by a white Toyota coupe in Frog Hollow Reserve.

As two police officers walked over to Lan, he got in the driver's seat, saying: "Hey guys".

His coupe, with a female passenger on board, lost traction as he accelerated and fishtailed away within two metres of a police car and the officers.

Courts had given Lan chances to address his drug-fuelled offending over the past decade, his lawyer conceded. His "substantial" list of priors ran for 35 pages.

At the time, Lan's 13-year relationship ended, the lawyer said. He'd lost work and a stable address, and was using ice and heroin nearly every day.

On 13 August, magistrate Tara Hartnett said her sentencing priority was to protect the community.

"He's had at least one community correction order, he's on a drug treatment order and he's in a situation that he's just gone beyond it.

"His rehabilitation is well down the list of sentencing principles.

"He's run out of options."

After the EastLink incident, Lan's drug treatment order was cancelled by Dandenong Drug Court and he was jailed for 168 days.

Ms Hartnett jailed Lan for a further six months on top. He was disqualified from driving for two years.

Help is on hand

By Cam Lucadou-Wells With 300 referrals a month, Dandenong and Narre Warren forms one of youth mental health provider headspace's busiest regions in Australia.

But many more young people still need to ask for help, says headspace clinical lead Christina Molina.

Ms Molina is one of the guest speakers at a free public mental health forum staged at Dandenong High School on Wednesday 21 August.

She looks forward to sharing what young people are going through, and how headspace can support them and their families.

"One of the most helpful bits of advice we can give is it's OK to ask for help, that you're not alone.

"For young people, if they're going through mental health difficulties they often feel they're the only ones.

"And if someone finds out there's still a lot of taboos. Many think 'I don't want people to think I'm crazy'.

"We want to let people know it's OK to reach out."

The prevalence shows in the stats.

In the past year, the headspace clinics in the South East held 9000-plus appointments with its doctors, drug and alcohol support and peer support workers, and other services.

Ms Molina stresses that the service supports the whole family, not just the young person.

Her advice to parents is to seek help for their child earlier rather than later. Don't wait until you're burnt out and have reached your limit.

"We see quite a lot of young people whose whole family is experiencing mental health difficulties."

Many suffer transgenerational trauma, and they ponder their self-identity betwixt two different cultures.

It's a ripple-effect across pressure-points, such as cyberbullying and face-to-face bullying, study and finding work.

"It's not just one area. If it affects one, it often affects all areas of a young person's life," Ms Molina said.

The service also reaches out to schools to assist students and their teachers.

"There's a lot of pressure for teachers to be everything at times such as being a counsellor and pseudo-parent.

"They don't need to be everything and it's OK to ask for help."

The keys for young people's mental health is belonging - with supports, schooling and employment, and positive peer relationships.

The Mental Health Forum is held by Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong.

Other speakers include psychiatrist and author Greg de Moore, and educator Sara Villiers of The Metanoia Movement.

It is at Melaleuca Theatre, Dandenong High School, David Street, Dandenong on Wednesday 21 August, 7pm. Free entry, gold coin donations for mental health research (via Australian Rotary Health) are welcome.

Rescue is the cat’s meow

By Taylah Eastwell Dandenong-based cat refuge, Dandy Cat Rescue have had their kitty care recognised by being named a finalist in the national Jetpets Companion Animal Rescues Awards 2019.

The Jetspets award recognises achievements in the rescuing and rehoming of animals in Australia. Dandy Cat Rescue are the only Victorian finalist in the "Outstanding New Rescue Group" category, an outstanding achievement for an organisation that has only been in existence for 18 months.

Secretary of Dandy Cat Rescue, Melissa Mitchell said the organisation is a small network of volunteer foster carers with big ambitions.

"We are passionate about saving the lives of many cats and kittens who have been dumped,

neglected or find themselves homeless through no fault of their own," Ms Mitchell said.

Ms Mitchell believes being announced as a finalist is a great way to draw attention to animal welfare in the Dandenong area, as well as an ideal opportunity to continue to push for animal desexing in the community.

"We are strong advocates for desexing as well as vaccinating and microchipping of all of our rescue cats. Having pets desexed is an effective way of reducing the number of unwanted cats and kittens on the streets," Ms Mitchell added.

Jetspets Rescue Awards founder and advocate from Pets4Life, Cathy Beer said the finalists have not only demonstrated best practice in animal care, but also ensured the sustainability of their organisation into the future.

A woman has miscarried hours after being allegedly kicked in the stomach by her boyfriend at a Dandenong caravan park, a court has heard.

The man, who was on a community corrections order for a violent public rampage, was refused bail at a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 13 August.

The 31-year-old meat factory worker denied the charges of false imprisonment, recklessly causing injury, criminal damage, assault and breaching a CCO. His CCO was imposed the week before for punching the face of a stranger who was sitting with mates at a table at Zagame's entertainment venue in Berwick on 27 March.

During the unprovoked attack, he yelled abuse, punched two TVs and crashed a chair on a table.

He had been convicted of a one-punch assault in the same venue in 2015.

Police told the court that the man and the victim often accused each other of cheating on one another.

Recently, he had allegedly thrown a coffee cup that struck her in the head after she answered a call from her ex-partner who had fathered her three children.

On a daily basis, he'd yelled abuse and insulted her, she told police.

During an abusive rage on 12 August at 2am, he threw her off the bed and shoved her backwards on the oven.

Two months pregnant, she pleaded with him to stop. He called her a 'whore' and kicked her in the stomach, causing her to fall to ground.

Later that day, at her request, he drove her to hospital due to stomach pains and bleeding.

During the drive, they fought and the man headed back to the caravan park.

Along the way, he punched her, pulled her by the hair and prevented her from escaping the car, police told the court.

She kicked out and scratched him with her fingers during the struggle, which was reported by witnesses at Princes Highway.

The accused was arrested at the caravan park. His partner was admitted to Dandenong Hospital where she miscarried.

In opposing bail, police labelled the man as a flight risk given most of his friends and family were in Queensland.

The man requested bail so he could contact his family and sort out his belongings, claiming he was "assaulted first" by the partner during the car trip.

He claimed the woman requested him to return home, and he'd tried to stop her from endangering herself by getting out of the car in front of traffic.

60 years on, Tarrants still at home in Noble Park

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ann and Brian Tarrant are among the last of the early settlers in Kleine Street Noble Park.

Sixty years ago, they moved in as newlyweds into the street's first house. Hard to believe now, but around them was a vista of cows, poultry and market gardens.

Where now there is now Sky Rail, there wasn't even a bridge crossing Mile Creek on Corrigan Road.

Noble Park was dubbed 'Struggle Town'.

Without a car at that stage, the couple ensured they were within walking distance of the railway station.

Their home remains Brian's second house that he's ever lived in.

"The house wouldn't recognise itself. We've changed it, extended it, modified it so why move out?" he says.

"Two houses, two jobs," Ann quips of her husband's settled life.

On 23 August, the couple mark their 60th wedding anniversary. It will be followed by a weekend holiday with their three sons, their wives and four grandchildren.

Wayne is winding up from 40-plus years of service with the Australian Army, Glen is a well-known gynaecologist and obstetrician, and Mark has been involved in catering, local government and emergency management.

It has been a great base to raise a family, the Tarrants say. As neighbours moved in, so formed a close-knit community in which "everyone knew everyone".

Most of those old friends have however moved on. Neighbours come and go regularly due to the high number of rentals.

Another factor is affluence, Brian says.

"You can do what you want to do, you can be self-sufficient now.

"Years ago, you'd go next door for a cup of sugar, an extra egg or two or lemons.

"People don't socialise anywhere near like what they used to because they've got so many things they can do themselves."

Mr and Mrs Tarrant met at Wycliffe Congregational Church in Surrey Hills.

Brian, who grew up in Surrey Hills, was a youth group leader and Sunday School secretary at the church; Ann was a Sunday School teacher.

She had grown up in London during World War II and the nightly air bombings of the Blitz, moving to Melbourne in 1954.

Both immersed themselves in family and their community.

Ann led Scouts groups, toiled in school canteens and the Mother's Club before becoming one of the first mature-age students to matriculate in the local HSC course.

She then served as a teacher's aide at Noble Park Primary for 17 years.

"She put up a target for our children to strive to achieve," Brian says.

"The young ones couldn't believe I could be bothered to go back to study," Ann adds.

Brian's first job was as an apprentice fitter and turner. He trained as a mechanical engineer and worked 33 years with Kent Instruments, rising to state manager.

He has been a prominent long-serving Freemason, appointed as a director of ceremonial traditions across Victoria.

The couple, who have travelled across the world, still walk regularly to Parkmore shopping centre.

They remain active in Probus service club.

Ann tends a large garden including a vgie patch and spectacular proteas and Brian woodturns sets of pens and display bowls.

They have always supported each other to pursue their various interests, Brian says. They rarely had a disagreement, and always found a way to talk their way through things.

Public speak out against ‘gag’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Residents have stirred against "anti-democratic" moves against online petitions, councillor question-time and direct resident participation at council meetings.

Of about 48 submitters, more than 20 presented their views to Greater Dandenong councillors at a public forum on 15 August.

They were generally of one mind against the changes.

One of them was Jim Houlahan who noted the forum was "curiously" the type of democracy that the council wanted to stamp out.

Cr Matthew Kirwan - who is seen as the target of a proposed 'gag' on councillors - told him: "We're only doing it tonight because the Local Government Act makes us do it."

Mr Houlahan said that for "you people to have balanced positions, you need to be listening".

"I get no sense out of those model rules that you're trying to enhance local democracy by listening."

He and other presenters derided the council's plan to limit currently "unlimited" councillor question time to eight minutes.

They also opposed the council's move to restrict rescission motions, and to ban change. org petitions as well as the public from asking their own questions directly to the council at meetings.

After the forum, it's believed that the council proponents may soften but not eliminate the changes - such as limiting councillor question time to a slightly more generous 11 minutes.

Cr Sean O'Reilly says he is pushing for efficiency along with democratic "notions".

He said submitters showed that they deemed "the notion and practice of democ-

racy to be of paramount importance".

"I think as a council, we shouldn't make questions only on notions, but also on how council can most efficiently deliver core services to residents."

Cr O'Reilly said he was moved by the "heartfelt" submissions to reflect on his own assumptions.

"Verbal submissions from the public remind me as a councillor to always remember that decisions we make should first and foremost benefit residents.

"There is still discussion to be had before we reach a final decision."

The councillor question time is widely seen as a move to target Cr Matthew Kirwan, who is renowned for lengthy interrogations of council officers during meetings.

Cr Kirwan said the objectors represented "people from across the municipality of different ages and cultures".

"The fact that so many people wanted to come out on a cold winter's night to passionately speak against these anti-democratic changes shows how bad the changes are.

"They wanted changes that make Greater Dandenong more open and transparent and encouraging more civic participation like allowing people to ask public questions themselves at public council meetings."

Cr Maria Sampey said the moves were a "form of bullying" and a "pack mentality" against Cr Kirwan.

"I think the council is going backwards."

Uncle’s smoking-hot success Popular Dandenong deli Uncle's Smallgoods has carved a meaty return at the 2019 Australian Food Awards.

The maker of woodsmoked meats in Thomas Street won medals for its Uncle's Ham (silver), smoked chicken (bronze), streaky bacon (bronze) and pork frankfurts (bronze).

It was the first time that the family business entered the national competition.

Co-owner Brendan D'Amelio said the medal haul confirmed that the business's hard work was paying off.

"We are thrilled to be recognised against the country's best producers."

The awards are conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria.

Two stabbed in fast food store Two teenagers have been stabbed by a group of up to 10 males in a fast food store in Dandenong, police say.

The group of between seven and 10 males entered the David Street store about 6.40pm on Wednesday 14 August, and stabbed the victims inside.

The offenders ran from the premises towards Princes Highway.

The teens, aged 18 and 16, from Hampton Park, were hospitialised with non-life threatening injuries.

Two robbed at knifepoint Two men have been robbed at knifepoint by a group in Kelvinside Road, Noble Park.

The 22-year-olds from Endeavour Hills and Berwick were approached by four males from behind as they walked around the corner from Heatherton Road about 8.15pm on Saturday 10 August.

One of the males produced a knife as he demanded the victims' belongings. Both handed over their iPhones and bank cards.

The robbers, described as Pacific Islander and/or Asian appearance, then fled in separate directions.

Heroine halts gang robbery in Noble Park An unknown female's intervention has halted four robbers during an attack on a man in Mills Reserve, Noble Park.

The 29-year-old victim from Noble Park was walking north towards Heatherton Road when approached by the group of males about 5pm on Thursday 8 August.

One of the robbers grabbed his yellow puffer-jacket and pulled it off him.

He was shoved, then punched and kicked to the head and back by the group.

An unknown female has yelled out from a distance causing the offenders to run away towards Roberts Street.

They stole the victim's puffer-jacket and beanie.

Woman carjacked near offices

A driver has been dragged out of her seat during a carjacking behind the Australian Work Force office in Robinson Street Dandenong.

The 37-year-old woman was approached by a man while she was parking her Toyota Prius about 8.50pm on Friday 9 August.

The carjacker opened the front passenger door, leant over the driver and opened the driver's side door.

He pulled the victim out of the driver's side door, and drove off towards Hemmings Street.

The car was recovered in Dandenong on 11 August.

The carjacker was described as aged in his thirties.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 21 August 1919 New Bridge in Dandenong As mentioned last week the bridge now nearing completion on the Main Gippsland road will be formally opened on Friday August 30, and it is expected that the Minister of Public Worked, also one or more members of the Country Roads Board, will be present. Cr Abbott (shire president) informs us that he would be glad to welcome the pioneers of the district, or their representatives, especially those identified with the construction of the old bridge.

the Westvale Hostel at Westall and already the Springvale Good Neighbour Council is preparing for the arrival of the migrants. Members of the council recently visited the Nunawading Hostel, to become acquainted with the possible problems of hostel living. In his annual report the president of the Springvale group Mr E Mitchell said: "The members of this committee told us that the adults at the hostel were so busy establishing themselves financially that they had little time for social activities. "It was felt that if the children at the hostel were encouraged to join existing community clubs and activities contact could then be made with the parents.

20 years ago 16 August 1999 Safe House feud The debate over whether Greater Dandenong

should get its own safe injecting centre has resulted in a feud between the mayor, Councillor Naim Melhem and Councillor John Kelly. Cr Kelly verbally attacked the mayor at a council meeting last Monday, arguing that the mayor had expressed the council's opinion on the issue without first consulting fellow councillors. "I am extremely disappointed that the mayor has brought out a press release that explains the council's positon on safe injecting facilities when he has not even bothered to discuss it with the rest of us," he said. "As a council you are not always going to agree on everything but the mayor has rushed out and embraced the Labor Party's position on drugs as the council's own, when it clearly does not reflect the beliefs of everyone." However Cr Melhem said he had the responsibility to comment "I did not say

I endorsed safe injecting facilities, but rather that this city should at least consider them as part of a solution to the drug problem."

Go karts chief fires back

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hallam go karting track proponent has hit back at "alarmist" objections by Casey exmayor Rob Wilson.

Drive Go Karting managing director Chris Field said Mr Wilson's submission was the only formal objection after the $2.1 million project for 94 Centre Road Hallam was advertised to neighbouring residents.

Otherwise, the plan had "overwhelming" support from locals, he said.

Mr Field said Mr Wilson's concerns about the overhead high-voltage powerlines, lighting, wetlands and water runoff, and noise were "unfounded". "(Mr Wilson) never contacted Drive Go Karting for any information prior to his ill-

informed and alarmist comments to the Star Journal, and if he'd taken the time to speak with us he would have saved himself some embarrassment."

The ex-mayor's health concerns about high-tension power lines were "alarmist and unscientific", Mr Field said.

"For nearly 70 years people have lived and worked in close proximity to them all over the world, including within Casey City where there are houses just 20 meters away from them, and all with no scientific evidence of harm.

"If high tension power lines were as harmful as Wilson seems to believe, there would already be a public health crisis as a result.

Mr Field said the reconfigurable track offering 24 different circuits for up to 30 electric go

karts was an "excellent use of land that would otherwise have very little use or utility to the community".

Its plan complied with all requirements from stakeholders such as VicTrack, DELWP, water authorities and SP Ausnet, he said.

"Prior to us proposing to use this land for our track, it was going to be used as truck parking and hard-stand, a worse outcome for the community by any measure."

In response to Mr Wilson's other points, Mr Field said there was "plenty of clearance" under the power lines for the safe installation of short lighting towers.

The go-kart developers had also built large on-site lakes to absorb runoff from the floodplains site, and provided new habitat for the endangered dwarf galaxias fish.

Noise would be sufficiently dampened by acoustic fences up to 4.5 metres high, Mr Field said.

"We call on Mr Wilson to cease his wild public speculation and contact us directly with any further concerns or queries."

Mr Wilson had based his objection on the "unknown consequences" of electromagnetic radiation to track employees under the power lines.

"It's just the principle of having activities under powerlines should be respected. There should not be dwellings and other stuff under them.

"It could leave the council open to a lawsuit.

"I hope it won't be conned by the promise of 36 jobs."

His life for others

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

An apparently bored man has wielded a knife and fork in a "rather pathetic" attempted armed robbery at a Fountain Gate eatery in the hope of going back to prison, a court has heard.

Robert McLeod, of Noble Park, had previously tried to hold up a servo and a bottle shop with a dessert spoon.

On this occasion on 25 Februrary, after a breakfast meal, he wielded cutlery and yelled "give me all your money" and "I'm robbing you" at several staff at the front counter of the Pancake.

In front of alarmed diners, he hurled the knife and fork as well as a bowl of lollies at the manager. The utensils struck the manager's stomach, causing no injury.

McLeod, who was 47 at the time, was captured by security staff in a centre car park. He

told police that he wanted to go back to Port Phillip Prison.

He had previously been jailed and convicted for his dessert spoon hold-ups in Noble Park in September 2017.

He was serving a community corrections order with a supervised justice plan at the time of the Pancake Parlour hold-up as a result.

In sentencing on 9 August, Judge Gabriele Cannon of the Victorian County Court said McLeod's "rather pathetic" actions would have been "most frightening" to those who witnessed it.

"This is no laughing matter and it's time for you to behave yourself once and for all ...

"To accept that you can't always get what you want - and you should not frighten other people in trying to do so."

Judge Cannon said McLeod may be already institutionalised, enjoying the attention and structure of prison. He'd offended in the past

McLeod was convicted and jailed for up to two years, with a 12-month minimum non-parole period. It included 165 days spent in presentence remand.

Bowls of comfort food

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nothing revives you from winter's chills more instantly than a steaming soup.

On a bracing day, The Soup Junction in the food court of Dandenong Market offers four healthy flavours of warm comfort food.

It's served in a deceptively large bread bowl, which has proved the stall's signature crockery.

It's a neat no-washing-up solution that absorbs the juices, as well as being broken up and dipped during the meal.

Husband-and-wife owners Shabbir and Tasneem Kanchwala combine their Indian and Pakistani food backgrounds to hone the menu.

One favourite is the chicken manchow - a traditional Indian medley of pepper, stir-fried vegetables and a topping of crispy fried noodles.

It has a thicker body and spicier profile than a Chinese manchow, Tasneem says.

Also there's the traditional lentil soup - a vegetarian option built on the roasty flavor of a thick dahl with ginger and garlic.

The other pleasing and peppery bellywarmers on offer are pumpkin and leek, and chicken sweet corn.

Formerly from Queensland, The Kanchwalas have taken a sharp career detour to set up their soup stall and a nearby chai stall at the market.

Shabbir was an IT professional, while Tasneem worked in health insurance. But they hail from a rich food heritage within their families.

Tasneem's mother Nisreen, is also a creative businesswoman who works on combinations of Thai, Chinese, Indian and Pakistani flavours.

She suggested the chicken manchow soup as an Indo-Chinese option that is universally appealing.

"Both our mums are really good cooks,"

Eid festivities a mark of humanity

Entries are officially open for the Noble Park Community Art Show.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, a keen artist and the show's new chairperson, launched the event on 8 August.

Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, Bruce MP Julian Hill and State Upper House MP David Limbrick were also in attendance.

The show accepts works in all traditional two-dimensional mediums including photographs, oil paintings, watercolours, acrylics and pencil illustrations.

The prize categories are junior artists aged 3-11 and 12-17, schools, aged-care and allability artists, and adults.

Entries close on 3 October.

The show is open 19-20 October at the Noble Park Community Centre.

By Danielle Kutchel Muslims from around Greater Dandenong have joined the global Islamic community this week to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha, sometimes known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of two Eids celebrated in the Muslim calendar. The other is Eid al-Fitr, which takes place at the end of Ramadan.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim. In a story that has parallels in the Bible, the Quran details that Ibrahim was ordered to sacrifice his son, Ishmael.

At the last minute, Allah, who was satisfied with the pair's commitment to their religion, sent a lamb to take Ishmael's place.

It is a time of personal sacrifice, according to Rokhan Akbar, spokesperson for Afghan Islamic Centre And Omar-Farooq Mosque (AICOM).

"The concept of that sacrifice would be that in life you will face hardships and difficult times. Good things in life don't come easy, you have to go through sacrifice."

Muslims celebrate this Eid by providing charity to poor and disadvantaged people around the world, whether this is through buying clothes and food, gifting money or donating meat from animals slaughtered during the festival, as per Islamic custom.

This is in addition to the Muslim obligation of charity, which is one of the five pillars of the religion.

The celebrations can last for three to seven days and with families visiting and feasting with each other.

Lance Forkgen, the founder of the Dandenong Junior Hockey Club, and Rudy Pacheco, a key component of the development of the under-14 juniors for the Springvale-Noble Park Warriors, had dugouts named in their honour to recognise their dedication and commitment that they have to the club and community.

The Greater Dandenong Warriors Hockey Club was formed in 2008 when two local clubs - the Dandenong Hockey Club and the Springvale-Noble Park Warriors - merged to become a stronger club in the south east suburbs. The Dandenong Hockey Club was formed all the way back in 1956, while the Springvale-Noble Park Hockey Club was established in 1971, and both clubs have made strong contributions to the local community.

Warriors president Girish Fernandez - who has played for both of the clubs - said that it was important to honour those who have built the foundations for the club.

“It’s a privilege to be president first of all and to be able to honour these two founders is terrific,” he said.

“We’re a family club, and being a grassroots hockey club, so we love having the local support of the community; it’s a real privilege and honour to build a club based off these two founding members.”

Fernandez said that the future at the club is bright, and that Saturday was a great chance to celebrate everything that the club stands for.

“The future is with the kids coming through - in the under-10 and 12s carnivals, these are kids that are going to local kids and wanting to get involved in hockey.

“You can see them on a Saturday, we’re family club, and that’s what we want to be - a community based sporting club.”

Keysborough storms to victory in Div 2

By Tyler Lewis Keysborough’s stirring, come from behind 13.10 (88) to 12.8 (80) victory wasn’t enough to claim top spot over Springvale Districts in Southern Football League Division 2 on the weekend.

The Burras trailed at every break but stormed home with a strong victory in the final home and away round of the year. Tim Edwards was super for Keysborough with five majors while Matt Wetering slotted four for the Districts.

However, the win didn’t come with the margin the Burras needed to claim top spot, and was soured by an all-in scuffle following the final siren including players and even the crowd.

Skye, meanwhile, caused a boilover in the final round of its season in an upset over the Doveton Eagles, 9.12 (66) to 7.12 (54).

Cam Carmody booted four for the Eagles in the narrow loss while Keenan Hatch was important for the Bombers.

Fortunately for the Eagles, the loss didn't do any damage to their finals position as they sit fourth on the ladder.

In Division 3, Hampton Park shook off its slow start to over-run Black Rock 16.12 (108) to 9.7 (61).

Peter Dye (five goals) kicked another handful while Luke Behin was named the best for the Redbacks. The Redbacks sit four wins clear atop of the ladder heading into their semi-final next week.

Clayton got the jump on Endeavour Hills in the opening half and coasted to an 11.11 (77) to 3.11 (29) victory. Ben Holland stood strong for the Hills in the big loss. Despite the defeat, the Hills still sit in third on the ladder and will dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

take on Ashwood in next week’s elimination final.

And in Division 4, Lyndale won the battle of the bottom against Dandenong, 23.17 (155) to 11.6 (72).

Lyndale was wasteful early but moved on from the sloppy start to pile on 21 majors after the first break.

Trent Day was stupendous with seven majors while Brett Tosh was also important in the solid victory.

Hallam, meanwhile, recorded an important win over the second-placed South Yarra, 10.5 (65) to 2.11 (23).

The Hawks were yet to trouble the scorers at the first interval, but from then on kept the Lions goalless to ultimately run away with an impressive win on the eve of the finals.

And Lyndhurst secured top spot with a strong victory over the Frankston Dolphins, 9.11 (65) to 7.4 (46).

In the Eastern Football League’s Premier division, the finals-bound Rowville knocked off Noble Park, 12.7 (79) to 7.9 (51) away on the weekend.

The Hawks kept themselves in the match through accurate kicking early and then accelerated to victory, leading at every change on the way to their 11th win for 2019.

Ex-St Kilda and Essendon defender James Gwilt was a real standout for the Hawks while Jake Gains was named as the best for the Bulls.

Rowville has a crucial finals-like clash in the final round of the year on Saturday when it plays host to third-placed Blackburn - while the difficult draw continues for Noble Park as it takes on the second-placed Balwyn.

Stingrays suffer a loss

The Dandenong Stingrays suffered their eighth loss on the hop when they went down to Geelong on the weekend, 15.9 (99) to 9.14 (68).

The Stingrays were finding some form with impressive performances in recent weeks against the Eastern Ranges and Gippsland Power, but the Falcons also hit some strong form and knocked off the Stingrays in very wet conditions.

Geelong kicked to the scoring end in the opening term and lead at the first break, but the Stingrays kicked two goals inside a minute late in the quarter through Jack Toner and Jordan Andrews to take some momentum into the huddle.

As was the case against Gippsland, the Rays cost themselves the match, kicking 1.6 to Geelong’s 5.2 in the second term, which ultimately gave the Falcons the match-winning buffer.

Unfortunately for the Rays, the third term was a similar one to second, with Geelong proving damaging in front of goal.

Trailing by nine goals at the final break, Lachlan Williams and Will Lewis stuck strong and pegged the margin back in the final term.

Despite not adding a win for some time, the Rays will have the chance to make inroads in the most important time of the year with the wildcard round.

Finishing in eighth, Dandenong will play the ninth-placed Murray this weekend in Box Hill. The open pool widens the chance for the school boys to strut their stuff at NAB League level and for any side to win the premiership.

Local stars unleashed

By Nick Creely Two of Doveton Boxing Club's finest talents competed hard in their tour of New Zealand recently, representing Regional Victoria Boxing with great success.

The pair of 15-year-old Doveton locals, Levi Harrison and Zealand Rakei, jetted off to Christchurch and Auckland for a recent 10-day tour, doing the south-east region proud with their efforts and taking their respective competitions by storm.

The first tournament of the tour was against a select South Island team in Christchurch, with Zealand - competing in the Junior Girls 75-kilogram - eager to impress, jumping straight into her opponent with a barrage of punches, forcing the referee to call a standing eight count 20 seconds into the first round, with her opponent clearly dazed and on the back foot.

Zealand - sky high with confidence and with a heap of talent - then pounced with a flurry of heavy punches, forcing her opponent's corner to throw in the towel 46 seconds into the first round.

Next up was Levi - competing in the 66kg Junior Division - who was stepping up in class in this bout but was confident heading into it.

In the first round, Levi landed some heavy fast shots, forcing his opponent to retreat on the back foot.

With a local crowd cheering loudly, the second round saw the South Island boxer look to stamp his authority, but Levi landed cleaner shots to break down his opponent with a lead rip to the body visibly hurting his opponent,

with the relentless youngster picking up a terrific, and confidence boosting win. Levi was also awarded Scientific Boxer of the Tournament.

The pair then travelled through the country with a team of boxers and coaches from all over Victoria, sparring and sight-seeing along the way, all while focusing on what promised to be a tough Auckland Cup the following weekend.

Zealand was once again first up in her Auckland Cup bout, coming up against a South Auckland boxer who looked fit and confident.

In the first round, both boxers were clearly in their element, resulting in a hard-to-score round. But in the second round, Zealand came out blazing, landing some heavy right hands that saw her start to get on top of her opponent. In the third round, Zealand came out aggressively, with her power forcing the referee to call a standing eight count on her tough and exhausted opponent, with the rest enough for her to survive the bout and come home strong with a big win.

Adding to the stunning success, Levi was on next against another South Auckland boxer, and despite an even start to the bout, the skill of Levi was the difference, landing cleaner shots to give him a brilliant Auckland Cup win.

It was a spectacular success for the Doveton Boxing Club in their its overseas competition, with both boxers looking for bigger and better things in the coming weeks and months.

Whiskey Riot catapulted to the top of the Speed Star leader board with thrilling 29.255 victory over dual Group 1 winner Neo Cleo at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

The pair stepped cleanly to hit the first mark together before rounding the turn clear of their rivals. Whiskey Riot held the rails position down the back straight with Neo Cleo taking the sit behind, and making her move as they hit the second split - a flying 18.65.

Neo Cleo had closed the gap to a length as the pair swung for home but Whiskey Riot proved too good, scoring by a neck and all but assuring himself a berth in the $190,000 Speed Star series in September.

Whiskey Riot burst onto the racing scene, winning eight of his first nine starts with six of those coming in the fastest time of the night.

"We've been waiting for him to do something like this for a little bit," said trainer

"He's really matured into a really nice dog.

His trial times have been off the chart, and it was a great run in the Maturity (where he ran second to boom sprinter Sennachie). He's always been pretty sensible, but he's just start-

ing to know what racing's all about now. He's really good in the kennels now and a great traveller, he's putting it all together and that makes all the difference."

As impressive as the time was, Azzopardi was particularly pleased about the manner of the win and the options it now opens up for him.

"It was a massive achievement, she was right on his hammer all of the way and I thought she might get us because she's very strong but I think his sections held her at bay.

He's done it at both ends so we're very proud of the dog to hold off a champion bitch like Neo Cleo.

"He's finding form at the right time. The Speed Star is definitely on the agenda, then I have to think about what I'm going to do for the Million Dollar Chase. You only get one chance at it so we'll see how it all pans out."

Whiskey Riot has now won 13 of his 25 starts and $114,750 in prizemoney.
