College’s million reasons to smile By Taylah Eastwell A new multi-purpose building is set to benefit students of Heritage College in Officer thanks to $1,200,000 in funding from the Federal Government. To commemorate the announcement Member for La Trobe Jason Wood attended the school on Tuesday. Mr Wood said the whole school community would benefit from the new facilities, which will be used for events such as assemblies, chapel services and awards nights. It will also host basketball clinics for the Heritage College basketball team. "These new learning spaces take into account the latest in educational research and will see students learn more effectively," Mr Wood said. Help keep hall By Mitchell Clarke The 100-year-old Officer Public Hall will permanently close if a new committee isn't inducted within a week. As the hall sits on Crown land, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) requires a functioning management committee to keep the hall open. In a statement, DELWP said the current committee of management has become "unable to function and maintain the hall" and without a functioning committee, they will be forced to close the hall. Chairman of Officer District Community Association Rob Porter said it would be a terrible shame for the community if the hall was to cease operation. "I think the whole community is worried
about the hall disappearing because it's the oldest public building in the district," Mr Porter said. "It pays its own way. We have some very nice regular people who use the hall, often on a weekly basis." The hall is often used by dance classes, theatre groups, religious groups and even for weddings and parties on occasions. "There's still a big demand for it and it's quite reasonably priced to use it," Mr Porter explained. "The Officer District Community Association used to hold our meetings there but it got to the point where it was always booked out, it's still vital." Star News understands the hall was maintained by the Van Steensel family, who up until
recently also looked after all the bookings and secretarial work. "Their contribution towards the hall has been magnificent and we couldn't have run it without them," he said. Cardinia Shire councillor Brett Owen is calling on the Officer community, particularly newer residents to put their hand up to join the committee. "As there are retiring members and a need to form a full and energetic committee, I call upon members of the Officer community to consider putting up their hand, to serve their community so the public hall will continue to be a great place to hold events and provide a great meeting location at a very affordable cost," Cr Owen said. "The Officer Public Hall has a long and proud history and one we need to continue to
support and ensure community access now and into the future." DELWP Regional Manager land and built environment programs Dick Ford said the committee's term has come to an end and DELWP is seeking new members. "There is not capacity within the outgoing committee to undertake necessary day-to-day management of the hall, including bookings," Mr Ford said. "As such, the hall will not be open for bookings in August and potentially September until a new committee is appointed." The Officer Community Association will hold a meeting at the Officer Public Hall on Wednesday 21 August at 7.00pm. Anyone interested in joining the committee is encouraged to attend.

An apparently bored man has wielded a knife and fork in a "rather pathetic" attempted armed robbery at a Fountain Gate eatery in the hope of going back to prison, a court has heard. Robert McLeod, of Noble Park, had previously tried to hold up a servo and a bottle shop with a dessert spoon. On this occasion on 25 Februrary, after a breakfast meal, he wielded cutlery and yelled "give me all your money" and "I'm robbing you" at several staff at the front counter of the Pancake Parlour. In front of alarmed diners, he hurled the knife and fork as well as a bowl of lollies at the manager. The utensils struck the manager's stomach, causing no injury. McLeod, who was 47 at the time, was captured by security staff in a centre car park. He
told police that he wanted to go back to Port Phillip Prison. He had previously been jailed and convicted for his dessert spoon hold-ups in Noble Park in September 2017. He was serving a community corrections order with a supervised justice plan at the time of the Pancake Parlour hold-up as a result. In sentencing on 9 August, Judge Gabriele Cannon of the Victorian County Court said McLeod's "rather pathetic" actions would have been "most frightening" to those who witnessed it. "This is no laughing matter and it's time for you to behave yourself once and for all ... "To accept that you can't always get what you want - and you should not frighten other people in trying to do so." Judge Cannon said McLeod may be already institutionalised, enjoying the attention and structure of prison. He'd offended in the past
to go back to jail, she noted. "I'm very worried about your prospects of rehabilitation and the protection of the community." McLeod's mild intellectual disability lowered his moral culpability. It was also perhaps why he showed no remorse or insight into his offending, Judge Cannon said. There seemed to be not enough resources and supports in the community to occupy, supervise and provide good company for the unemployed man. "Your case is a difficult case and a sad one. "I express the hope that your release will be supported in the community in a strong, structured way." McLeod was convicted and jailed for up to two years, with a 12-month minimum non-parole period. It included 165 days spent in presentence remand.

A teenager who had never driven a car before and who mowed down a crowd of people while "drunk as f..." resulting in a man's leg having to be amputated has been jailed. Dieu Atem of Cranbourne North pleaded guilty to five charges in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 6 August including reckless conduct endangering life and driving without a licence. Atem, 19, had been drinking heavily at his Endeavour Drive home while celebrating his brother's birthday with a friend in September last year. The group then left in a Nissan Pulsar after deciding to go to Collingwood's Gasometer Hotel. Judge Elizabeth Brimer said in sentencing remarks a fight broke out at the hotel about during the early hours of the morning where Atem threw a chair, hitting a patron in the head. Outside the hotel, Atem had been in a fight with a man before being assaulted by a number of others while on the ground, the court heard. He got behind the wheel of the Pulsar and drove on the wrong side of Mater Street, narrowly missing pedestrians before speeding towards a crowd young people. The court heard Atem crashed into a parked car, pushing it into another parked car and pinning an 18-year-old man between the vehicles - instantly "shattering" his right leg which had to be amputated. Judge Brimer said a friend saw "bone poking out" of the man's leg and with the help of police used his belt and shirt to stop the bleeding. Another man waiting for a taxi was knocked to the ground, requiring stitches to his leg. Atem left the scene and caught a taxi where he paid a $126 fare to travel to Cranbourne railway station.

That night, police arrested Atem who admitted being at the hotel but "couldn't remember a lot of the night due to being hit in the head." He was released pending enquiries. Nearly two weeks later police executed a search warrant at Atem's home, seizing the clothes he wore on the night of the incident. Atem admitted he had never had a driving lesson nor driven a car before the incident, the court heard. In sentencing, Judge Brimer said Atem drove in "a manner such that you could easily have killed a number of people." She described the injuries suffered by the 18-year-old as "horrendous". "While the other injuries suffered by other victims, fortunately, were less serious, nevertheless, they were injuries caused to people
out at night with friends and going about their business," Judge Brimer said. Judge Brimer also said mobile phone footage "shows clearly the fear, panic and distress caused by you to those present." Atem came to Australia as a refugee in 2006 at the age of seven from South Sudan with two siblings. He is a permanent resident and has moved many times between Dandenong, Noble Park and Pakenham with family. After his grandmother died three years ago Atem had a "brief period of homelessness" and began drinking. The court heard Atem had been on a Youth Supervision Order in 2017 following charges of theft of motor vehicle, armed robbery and failure to answer bail. Atem was jailed for five years.

Business chick wings in By Narelle Coulter To a room full of business women, the most awe-inspiring thing about international business woman Emma Isaacs was undoutedly the fact that she is the mother of five children under 10. “I love that the mention of my five kids gets more reaction than anything,“ Emma said with laugh at the start of her address to the fifth annual Casey Cardinia Women’s Business Lunch on Friday 9 August. “Yes, I have five lovely little humans waiting for me in LA. It’s a completely crazy life. My youngest turns two next week. We are having a party but nothing is organised but I will get onto that as soon as I get home.“ Emma is the founder and Global CEO of Business Chicks, Australia’s largest event and networking community for women. She leads a team of 40 “amazing women“ spread across three continents and four time zones, which she said “makes for not a lot of sleep at times“. Hundreds of women from across Casey and Cardinia attended the lunch keen to hear Emma share her story of success and the lessons she has learned along the way. Emma described herself as “someone who has tried to do things without knowing how they are going to turn out and definitely before I am ready to attempt them“. “I’ve moved countries to start a new business with my family in tow, I signed a book contract and gave myself three months to write it. I really believe in doing what feels right and not always what we think is right. I am passionate about encouraging women to take on that mindset and very much leap before they are ready and give things a go.“ Emma gets asked a lot if entrepreneurs are born or made? “In my instance I came out an entrepreneur,“ she said. The eldest of three children, she was grew up in the suburbs of Sydney. She jokes that as a seven year old she founded her first business, a lolly enterprise into which she co-opted the neighbourhood kids. “I’d stand up on a milk crate and say ’go and borrow money from your parents’. All the kids would come back with $2 notes, remember those? We would go to the milk bar and buy a whole help of chocolates and lollies. We’d divide them into smaller bundles and then sell them back to the parents. “It was actually a brilliant first business and I am very proud of it,“ she said, to laughter from the audience. Emma dropped out of university after six months, a fact which still troubles her mother, and got her first job at a small recruitment company. By the time she was 18 she had bought into the business. Seven years later, a friend invited her to a Business Chicks function. Initially Emma resisted telling her friend that Business Chicks was one of the most insulting things she had ever heard. “I went along and it took me 5.5 seconds to fall in love with the entire concept. “At the next event the marketing manager got on stage and said “We are going to stop running this networking group we can’t make it work, anyone in room who wants to help come and talk to me at the end. “My general manager at the recruitment business, who is now the CEO of Business Chicks, lent into me and said ’you are going to buy it aren’t you Em?’ I said ’yeah, I am’. “Anyone else sitting next to me that day would have said don’t do this, you have a profitable business with a great culture, a great team which is making money, you don’t need

That would have been the sensible option.“ Bored with her work in recuritument and itching to do something different, Emma had found her new passion. “I had no experience running an event, except maybe my sister’s 18th birthday, and no experience running a membership organisation but if you have a dream or a goal it’s about somehow finding the confidence to take that first step.“ Over the past 14 years Emma and her team have grown Business Chicks from 250 members to a network that now reaches half a million women each year. The organisation produces more than 100 events annually and has a 250K social media following. Innovations have included a magazine, an annual conference and an entrepreneurial program. Guest speakers have included Jamie Oliver, Richard Branson and Arianna Huffington. “We have grown the business by listening to our customers and responding to them. It is a very beautiful, special business that we are very very proud of.“ In 2016 Emma and her husband moved their family to Los Angeles so Emma could expand Business Chicks into the US. Emma used her address to pass on some of the lessons from her “working life in the trenches of business“. “We all need to have a mindset of creating opportunities for ourselves. Jamie Oliver was never going to write to us and say ’hey, can I speak at Business Chicks?’, Richard Branson was never going to say come to Necker Island and bring 30 members.“ She urged women to surround themselves with the right people and write their own rules for their life and career. “We are so busy comparing ourselves to others we lose sight of what we really truly want. Sit back and think ’Am I on the right path? What more is out there for me? Each and every one of us gets to write the rules.“

Weather wreaks havoc By Brendan Rees Narre Warren State Emergency Service has kept busy after wild weather lashed the region on Friday 9 August.Volunteers attended 17 jobs in the Casey area, mostly for fallen trees and damaged roofs, the unit's spokesman Damian Burns said. Winds speeds reached up to 90km/h at 9am, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Mr Burns said the blizzard like conditions blew a trampoline flew onto a road in the vicinity of Cranbourne -Berwick Road and Linsell Boulevard in Clyde North. No one was injured but Mr Burns said it was disappointing the owner had not secured the trampoline. "They're shaped in such a way to actually take off and then when they land because they're round they roll ... they do quite a bit of damage," he said. A car also veered off Baxter Tooradin Road in Pearcedale into a drain full of water about 2pm. Pearcedale CFA volunteers attended and it's understood no person was trapped in the incident. Mr Burn said widespread heavy rain caused leaks to residential roofs and damage to tiles. "Most of the calls have been down the southern part of City of Casey ... because the strong wind is a strong westerly wind coming off Port Phillip Bay," he said. "Frankston and some of the Mornington areas have been badly affected," he added. Blustery winds caused the Frankston pier to snap off in the waves about 9.30am.Mr Burns said strong winds also brought trees down on Menzies Close, Narre Warren South and Stone Hill Circuit in Cranbourne East. A garage door was also damaged in Cranbourne North, he said. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster said about 15-20mm of rain fell over the region.

Pounding rain and strong winds played havoc over the weekend in Casey.Mr Burn said they responded to a job whereby a 25 metre fence had blown over at a Cranbourne North property on Sunday 11 August which now needs replacing. Gale-force winds blew a garage roof off in Tooradin which landed about 100 metres away in a neighbouring tree while part of a timber fence in Hampton Park fell onto a footpath in Joshua Drive.

"For public safety and also security we were able to do something with that," Mr Burn said of the fallen fence. Volunteers were called to help a resident in Narre Warren on Friday afternoon on 9 August after part of their ceiling collapsed due to a leak. Mr Burn said the build up of water had caused the ceiling to become "thin bit of paper" allowing water to "just fall in."

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon congratulated all businesses that were announced as finalists and wished them luck for the awards, with the winners to be revealed at a Gala Dinner on Friday 18 October at the Cranbourne Racing Centre. “The Casey Cardinia Business Awards are one of the great examples of how we’re supporting our business community through our regional partnership with Cardinia,” Cr Stapledon said. “They are a wonderful way to acknowledge the many exceptional businesses operating across the region and are a celebration of the success and innovation of our local businesses. “It’s great to be able to give recognition to those who are excelling in their fields, but also give businesses the opportunity to come together to learn from the experiences of one another and celebrate each other’s successes.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Graeme Moore said as always, the judges had a tough task in selecting the finalists. “This year a total of 91 applications were received from across the region, including many businesses connecting with the program for the first time which is always great to see,” he said.

Fed-up parents of a Clyde North primary school say are allowing more than an hour during pick up and drop off times. Parents say the school run at Wilandra Rise Primary School had become a "nightmare" after nearby roads been blocked off due to a new estate being developed. When Star News visited the site, drivers battled in the traffic-choked gridlock along Haflinger Avenue and Aayana Street - with a supervisor also out directing cars. But Casey Council says it is confident upgrades to connecting roads would start by the end of this year. Parent Belinda said she had to be at the school "super early" to get a park which was still not guaranteed."There's people beeping each other and parking illegally," she said. "It's dangerous ... people have to drop their kids off and they're jumping out of cars," Belinda said, who asked not to reveal her surname. Christy Gonzalez said the biggest problem facing parents was there was no exit with cars doing "U-turns in front of you." "They just line up to collect their kids done the other end in the two minute drop-off," she said. "There's no other way to get out ... you can see the dirt pile where they drive up on the speed hump and are up on the grass," she added.
"Council fine them but they don't care ... it's crazy. "I generally come an hour to an hour-andhalf earlier," Ms Gonzalez said. Another parent, Waruna Kariyawasam said he got to the school at 2.30pm to avoid the chaos. When he did find a park, he said he usually worked in his car. "It's very inconvenient. If I miss the 2.30 window I won't get a park," he said. Felicty Devine, who is a before and after school care worker, said: "We're finding it's a nightmare for us". "In the afternoon you find you have to leave an hour early just to be able to get here and get a car spot," she said. Casey manager city and asset planning Keri New said the site had been blocked off for subdivision by the developer and Brookford Estate, the parcel of land next to the school. Ms New said upgrades planned for nearby roads would improve traffic flow and the parking situation. "We understand the developer plans on starting work on these road updates before the end of this year," she said. "We are unable to influence or speed up the construction timelines as we are not the developer of the site. "We do empathise with families frustrated with the current situation. Parking restrictions are in place to maintain safety around the school," Ms New said.

Scouts celebrate By Brendan Rees Narre Warren South Scout Group held its annual presentation evening on Friday 9 August. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas accompanied proud scout leaders, committee members, families and friends in Hallam to celebrate the achievements of the scouts over the last twelve months. "The Narre Warren South Scouts are a formidable force in our local community, providing many young people with the opportunity to have fun, develop friendships and learn teamwork skills," he said. There was also excitement as the architectural plans for the new scout hall in Narre Warren South were unveiled. A recent funding announcement of $650,000 from the State Government and further Local Government support will mean that the Scout Group will have a permanent building to operate from for the first time in its history. "I'm proud that the Narre Warren South Scouts will shortly have their own new building to operate from, allowing their fine work to continue," Mr Maas said. All members of this fantastic organisation take part in a diverse range of activities that help develop resilience and leadership skills while also contributing to the local community. In the last 12 months alone, the Narre Warren South Scouts have participated in numerous camping trips, night hikes, Anzac Day dawn services and fundraising events. No escape from stench By Brendan Rees Lenti Lenko says he can’t hang out washing or go for a walk with his family without the revolting stench of the Hampton Park tip wafting over. “It was so bad one night my wife and I were dry retching in the bathroom,” he says. He is one of dozens of angry residents who have complained to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) about the constant stench. Last week, the EPA issued a works approval for the construction of new storage ponds and a treatment plant to manage the hazardous leachate at the Hallam Road landfill. The EPA’s executive director Tim Eaton said the three new leachate ponds proposed by the tip’s operator, Suez Recycling and Recovery (Suez), would help reduce the odour. “The Hallam Road Landfill has a history of problems with odour and this is not a complete solution, but adequate leachate management does enable landfill operators to better deal with landfill gas issues,” he said. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, who says she can smell the odour from her Cranbourne North home, recently council held a meeting between Suez and EPA to “further reiterate the community’s and our concerns on this matter and ensure action was being taken to address them.” The EPA works approval now requires planning approval from Casey Council. Mr Lenko says he and his wife decided to move to Narre Warren South after the smell at their original home near the tip became unbearable three years ago. But as of May this year Mr Lenko said he noticed the smell becoming progressively worse despite being more than 5km away. “It makes you dry retch, it gives you a head-

people live,” she said. “This is all a drain on everyone’s health.” Suez infrastructure manager Andrew Carson said they have been listening to the community’s feedback and started a gas well drilling program and the connection of existing gas wells. “These wells form a part of the process to convert landfill gas into electricity to deliver

power to the grid,“ he said. “The gas is extracted under vacuum, minimising escape, therefore these actions will reduce the risk of odour to the community.” Mr Carson said timelines for drilling works on the active landfill cell had been brought forward, allowing landfill gas to be extracted and processed in generators, “mitigating immediate odour concerns.“

Dubbed 'PROJECT 28', the project aims to help close the gap of 28,000 dwellings Australia wide for people with a disability, by constructing 28 units by 2028 - giving them a place of their own to call home. Starting with the delivery of four independent dwellings in its 'E>ST' development in Cranbourne East, Wolfdene, through its Wolfdene Foundation, is providing seed capital for the acquisition of land, planning, design and construction of the project. On Tuesday 13 August City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon and representatives from
Wolfdene, Blairlogie and their project partners celebrated the official start of the project with a formal sod turning ceremony. Cr Stapledon is supporting the project through her Mayor's Walk for Disability next month, with all proceeds from the walk being donated to the project. Wolfdene director Jonathan Atchison said it was a milestone two and a half years in the making. "It's a very exciting day for the team from Blairlogie who have been advocating for accommodation solutions for people with disabilities for much longer than that - a huge milestone for them." Construction on the first four properties will commence immediately with the aim of delivering the houses by April 2020.
I am sure that we all know the damage that sugar has on our dental and overall health. Instead of buying that bag of chips, or bottle of soft drink or flavoured milk at your next grocery shopping trip, how about buying a bag of fruit or a new empty bottle so you can fill it up everyday with normal tap water? Small steps can and will eventually lead to better health outcomes for us all. Start today by being more aware of what you are putting in your body.

Residents can’t connect By Brendan Rees Residents at a new housing estate in Clyde North estate say they are fed up with mobile phone reception cutting out repeatedly. High Grove Estate residents say they struggle to call emergency services, can't access the internet, and most of the time can't use their phone indoors. They are now rallying their local politician to fix the problem. Caitlin Williams contacted Star News after recently attempting to call triple-zero three times before the call-taker could make any sense of her. After about 15 minutes on the phone, she finally gave an address after hearing her neighbours argue violently. But being a new estate Ms Williams said the police couldn't find where to go and were unable to call her. "They ended up door knocking however many houses until they found me to figure where they were supposed to go," she said. "Thankfully nothing bad happened but if something bad had happened to try and get police or an ambulance there is just a nightmare." Ms Williams spoke of another frustrating experience when she drove to get mobile reception after her internet service had dropped out. "Because it's a new estate there's often building debris everyday so I ran over a nail and got a flat tyre ... couldn't call roadside assist because I had no phone reception." Muaremov the friendly family accountants at tax time Michael Muaremov is opening his Beaconsfield practice to new clients for the first time in nearly a decade. Until now the practice has only taken new clients on referral. Mr Muaremov said the time was right to take on new clients, who will be assigned to his team of four qualified accountants. “We have capped our client numbers for the last 10 years but my team is eager and ready to take on their own client loads,“ he explained. Mr Muaremov opened his eponymous business 20 years ago. He was headed for a life as a lawyer until the arrival of a daughter with wife Merita when he was barley 20 meant he had to eschew study for a paying job as a clerk. He eventually went back to school to study accounting and opened his own practice in 1999 when he was just 26. It turned out to be a fortunate turn of events.

Business manager Romaine Nichols has been with Michael for 16 years and accountant Anne Bryan has been with him for 15 years. Associate accountants Katrina Villegas and Ali Kasemi have clocked up 10 years and 14 years respectively. Graduate accountant Kavi Kumar is the newest addition to the team.
In return for their loyalty, Michael ensures his staff have opportunities to grow professionally. “One of the reasons they stay is because they don’t need to look for opportunities outside. I work to ensure people there are opportunities to grow professionally within the business.“ The firm handles the tax affairs of individuals including the self employed, sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts and self managed superannuation funds. The team prepare and lodge tax returns and Business Activity Statements and work closely with business clients and investors. Plans are afoot for a 20 year celebration later this year that will include many of the firm’s most valued clients. The celebration will honour two decades in business for a firm which is proud to be known as the “happy accountants“.

Cards for cause By Jessica Anstice A Pakenham woman with special needs has hit on a new idea to raise money for charity. Michelle Cleland put her plans to action a few weeks ago by creating homemade cards and donating them to the Berwick Opportunity Shop. The very special 36-year-old spends her own money to make the cards with all the proceeds from sales going to the op shop. "She has the most beautiful smile and infectious personality and laugh," Berwick Opportunity Shop president Margaret Ruse said. "She is a wonderful supporter of the Berwick Opportunity Shop and we love her." Michelle makes the cards with the help of her carer Sue and supportive mother Marie. "Sue brings Michelle into our shop for a regular weekly visit, at which time Michelle replenishes her supply of beautiful cards," Ms Ruse added. "Michelle radiates warmth and affection that our customers and volunteers can't resist, Michelle brightens everyone's day. "We value her contribution and the time and effort she puts into making the cards is truly appreciated." Since June 25, Michelle has sold enough cards to total $196 with each card selling for just $2. "It's good that they're going, it gives her something to do and she's really proud of herself," Michelle's mother Marie Cleland said. "I just love the fact that she loves to help people. She's been through hell and back. She's so brave and just happy all the time. "The ladies at the op shop love her to death, they're so nice to her and she comes home with a bag of stuff every week." Michelle's unique handmade cards cater for all occasions, including birthday, thank you, baby shower and friendship cards.

Comedian Akmal Saleh is heading to Hallam. He'll perform at the Hallam Hotel on Thursday 22 August as part of his Transparent Tour. Akmal has performed in movies, sketches, stand up and TV shows, as a radio DJ and talk show host, and is a published author. He immigrated to Australia from Egypt with his family nearly 30 years ago. "My parents didn't tell us where we were going," he said. "We thought it was two hours away. "Twenty hours later, we got off the plane. We were on another planet." Akmal's Arab heritage steers his comedy to issues of religion, honesty, looks at modernday life. He has appeared at festivals around the world including Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, New Zealand Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Akmal wrote and starred in the feature film You Can't Stop the Murders' to critical acclaim and also the cult hit TV show The 40 Foot Show. He hosted The Wrong Way Home drive radio show on the Nova network and achieved the station's highest ever drive-time ratings.

Kangaroo mob celebrates By Tyler Lewis Records are made to be broken, but it doesn't mean they can't be celebrated. The 2019 campaign looms as the first season in 21 years that all of Officer/ROC's sides will feature in September, and at the same time is a chance to celebrate the champions who have come before the current potential ones. On Saturday 17 August, the Officer/ROC Football Netball Club will be celebrating the achievements of past champions who have filled the silverware cabinets at Starling Road. While the current crop of Kangaroos will be hoping to move into fourth position on the ladder against Warburton on Saturday, the reserves champions of 1984, '89, '99 and '04 will all be in celebration with '89 A, B, C and '94 A and C premiership netball sides in a massive day for the club. Since this prominent era, the Kangaroos have been deprived of collective success until now. President Nick McLennan believes the weekend celebrating the past heroes of the club, provides the current ones with some spark coming into such an important finals series for the club. "I always say 'if you don't know where you come from, you will never know where you are going'," he said.

Devon Meadows finished its season in style, beating the finals-bound Chelsea 10.13 (74) to 8.17 (65). The Gulls got off to a flyer with a handy three-goal buffer at the first break, but the Panthers clawed back into the contest and ran away courtesy of a five-goal to two third term. Stuart Cunningham was the best for the Panthers while Shaun Foster stood strong for the Gulls. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17 Keysborough shook off a wasteful start against Caulfield to run away with a 10.11 (71) to 5.13 (43) victory. Chris Bryan brought up his season halfcentury with his two majors on the weekend, while Anthony Brannan was named best afield. Stuart Paterson was a standout for Caulfield. The finals begin a week early for the Gulls this week when they take on Springvale Districts, which sits on top of the ladder. Nick Battle was the best for the Eagles with four majors while Adam Read also added three. Chris Tosin stood strong for Heatherton, which now faces relegation at season's end if it can't beat East Brighton in the final round. The Eagles are expected to make the finals after they take on Skye in Round 18. DIVISION 3 ROUND 17 The ladder-leading Hampton Park continued its winning ways against Endeavour Hills on the weekend in its 9.9 (63) to 5.3 (33) triumph. The Redbacks did as they have all year when they jumped the Hills early and coasted home from then. Doveton young gun Connor Macdonald lays this tackle in his sparkling debut game. Youngster Connor Macdonald - a name that will feature plenty in the coming years as an AFL draft prospect - was best afield in his senior debut as a teenager, taking out the David George Medal in the Indigenous Round as the Doves donned a special Indigenous jumper. The Vic Country teenager, who will likely feature for the Dandenong Stingrays in the coming years, is a star on the rise, with director of football Martin Stillman full of praise for the highly talented youngster. "His family's got a long association with the club - he's 16-years-old, was the Vic Country under 16 vice-captain this year, and is Dandenong Stingrays listed, he's a very talented young player," he said. "We probably don't expect him to feature too much at Doveton, he's got a lot of commitments, with Vic Country and has played a lot of school footy this year. "He had a run in the 18s against Emerald, and this week was outstanding, which is so pleasing for us especially with his family's history." Another youngster to shine on the big stage was former Narre Warren forward Max Sheppard, who snagged four majors - including three in a dynamic second-term which helped turn the game for the Doves. Sheppard crossed over to the club mid-season after being starved of opportunities for senior football at the Magpies. "He's a quality person on and off the field - everyone in the AFL Outer East knows he's quality, but wasn't able to break in for senior footy at Narre, and he was looking for opportunities," Stillman said. "He's great friends with Mitch Cotter - who's returned to the Doves - and he's been terrific, and at 19-years-old, is only going to get better. "He kicked four, and is starting to blossom as a key forward for Doveton. We look forward to hopefully watching him playing senior footy for the next decade at our club." In the remaining matches in Division 1, Pakenham surged to top of the ladder with a comfortable win against Warburton Millgrove, 11.8 (74) to 1.2 (8), Mount Evelyn held on against Belgrave away from home, 10.20 (80) to 10.13 (73), while Officer dominated Emerald, 17.14 (116) to 4.3 (27).
