Mr Boness’ efforts led to the Mount Evelyn RSL being named Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce’s Community Group of the Year in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

He was named the Victorian Senior Citizens (Veteran) of the Year in 2017 and received the Yarra Ranges Council Mayoral Lifetime Achievement Award.

There are big reasons to try number five.

There a few men more humble than Roger Boness.

The Mount Evelyn RSL president was quick to direct attention back to his sub-branch mates when presented with RSL Australia Life Membership on Thursday 8 August.

“I am not the RSL. We are all the RSL,” he told them.

“You are all as equally important to this organisation as you may deem me to be.

“I couldn’t find a better group of people if I tried.”

A newly-retired Mr Boness came on board as president in 2011 after then-president Derek Crittenden became unwell.

“We are now fully integrated as a very important part of our Mount Evelyn community,” he said.

“It’s been an incredible journey with an incredible group of people.”

He spoke highly of their support throughout his tenure, but particularly during his recent cancer battle.

“I’m kicking goals - my hair’s coming back,” he said.

“So look out, I’m still a force to be reckoned with.”

Mr Boness received a list of the club’s 80 members when he took on the presidency, but soon discovered the actual membership base was much lower - many had passed away.

Today the club has 120 members - more than the Lilydale RSL, secretary Anthony McAleer declared to cheers, applause and laughs at the presentation.

Conscription into the Australian Army in 1966 interrupted Mr Boness’ promising football career with St Kilda.

He volunteered to serve his country at the end of his national service, and between 1967 and 1968 saw active service in Vietnam with the 106th Field Battery, 4th Field Regiment.

He joined the Mount Evelyn RSL in 1976, but was quick to point out that work commitments kept him from being an “active” member at that time.

Mr Boness has more than made up for that.

He created a Thursday afternoon friendship group for retired members and organises outings and excursions for them.

“Our number one role is welfare,” he said.

Towering troubles

By Casey Neill A Telstra application for a telephone tower in Belgrave South has raised concerns among residents.

Several voiced took to social media to flag the proposal for the road reserve at Keswick Avenue.

The application is for a 40-metre stainless steel 4G monopole tower with a pale eucalypt colour finish.

The application also includes vehicle access via Keswick Avenue and vegetation removal.

Chris Monaghan told the Mail that residents would hold a meeting on Thursday 8 August and hear from a speaker on the frequencies associated with such towers.

He was concerned it would kill bees kept in hives at a yoga centre next to the site, and said he'd moved to the hills to stay away from such technology.

Telstra regional general manager Loretta Willaton said the telco had carefully chosen the

proposed site for a new 4G mobile base station.

She said amenity, siting and design as well as the need to improve coverage and boost capacity to meet current and future demand for mobile data around Belgrave South were all factors.

"We're working with local council and have kept residents informed about the proposal," she said.

Telstra relies on advice from international and national health authorities including the World Health Organisation (WHO) for overall assessments of health and safety impacts of mobile phone towers.

Mr Monaghan also said that Yarra Ranges Council had not provided residents with enough time to submit feedback.

He said he received a letter on 7 August that was dated 1 August and posted on 2 August.

It said submissions closed on 17 August.

The council's social and economic development director, James Collins, said the council sent letters to residents in the surrounding

area as part of the planning application process, giving them further information and a chance to make a submission.

"The planning application is still under assessment. No date has yet been set for this item to be decided," he said.

"Residents interested in making a submission in favour or opposition to a planning application are able to do so until the item is decided by the council.

"We ask for submissions to be received with a deadline of two weeks so that any council officer's report on the planning application includes these submissions, along with a response from our officers that may address or further explain any issues raised."

Mr Collins said consultants acting for Telstra contacted residents in May to advise about the impending application and give residents a chance to share feedback before it was lodged.

Submissions can be made online via the council's ePlanning Track page or via mail@ yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Olinda residents woke up to snow on Saturday and Sunday mornings as the state shivered through a cold spell.

Emerald SES was kept busy attending 43 incidents on Friday 9 August, and then another 20 over the weekend.

Unit controller Ben Owen said there were no major disasters, apart from a tree that fell onto a house and "tore it to bits".

“The family arrived after the incident and we supported them and helped with finding alternative accommodation," he said.

On Friday, the unit also received assistance from Whittlesea SES. “Whittlesea came up to help, which was good as being a work-day on Friday we were a bit under the pump,” Mr Owen said.

With snow falling in Olinda and Sassafras the SES was also assisting vehicles that got stuck in the slush.

“We had crews up there assessing it in case we got some calls, but mainly had minor vehicle incidents with cars sliding into other cars or getting stuck in snow,” Mr Owen said.

He said the state was now coming into the windy season, and reminded residents to drive with lights on in snowy and foggy conditions and to maintain caution around trees.

"Trees are still falling down, so be mindful of that," he said.

Stolen goods Police charged a Silvan man in his twenties with handling stolen goods, weapons possession and a petrol drive-off.

They intercepted the man driving in Silvan on 5 August.

Inside the vehicle they allegedly found a stolen leafblower and knives.

Snow delightful in a winter wonderland Residents atop Mount Dandenong woke to snow falling in their yards on Saturday 10 August.

The winter wonderland feel on the mountain continued on Sunday, with another dusting arriving in the early hours.

The magical scenes attracted tourists and locals alike, with many sharing their photos

from the winter delight on social media and with the Mail.

Olinda resident Becky Scott told the Mail she woke up to the snow on Saturday morning, and could feel it in the air before she opened the curtains and laid her eyes on the powder.

"There is always a stillness and quiet with snow," she said.

"It's a great morning for football and netball at oval today!"

Volunteers were out at the ground early to clear the snow so matches could go ahead in frosty conditions.

An proposal to rezone 361-365 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Sassafras from a Green Wedge A to a Commercial 1 Zone is open for comment.

In May, Yarra Ranges Council received a request for a combined planning scheme amendment and planning permit application for the site.

A bakery, bonsai nursery, a second nursery and tourist information centre are there now - the latter two functioning from shipping containers.

The proposal is to rezone the land to recognise its ongoing commercial use.

According to the applicant's planning document, the rezoning would allow the land to keep being used in the same way it has been for 50-plus years, and would not cause any major change to the Sassafras township.

The applicant is also seeking a permit for on-site works and additional use to improve the tourist experience for visitors to the site and Sassafras.

The closing date for submission is 2 September and the council will decide at a later meeting whether to refer the request to the Planning Minister.

TRIP teen trauma talks

By Derek Schlennstedt For every fatal crash there are many victims.

The person who died at the scene. The passengers or driver of another car. The paramedic who cared for the victim. The firefighter who cut the car open. The police officer who had to inform the parents their loved one had died.

This is the story that CFA Commander Tim Holland told about 500 people - many of them teenagers - at the CityLife Church in Wantirna on Wednesday 7 August.

“Last year in total 119 lives were lost across Victoria, this year 176 people have already lost their lives,” he said at the Knox TRIP. “Have a look around the room and think about the ripple effect. What type of impact that has across not only your family and friends, but the community as well.”

The Knox Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) is a combined response by emergency services - CFA, SES, police and ambu-

lance - to the tragic loss of young lives on roads in the eastern region.

The target audience was 16 to 25 year olds and their parents.

Montrose CFA community safety co-ordinator Marj Taylor introduced the program, which included guest speakers Mr Holland, Leading Senior Contable Gavin Nash from Knox Highway Patrol, Detective Sergeant Mark Amos from the Major Collision Investigation Unit, Magistrate Jack Vandersteen, The Alfred hospital trauma centre director Prof De Villiers Smit, and Sally Millar, the mother of Charlie Robertson, who died in a crash at Launching Place on 10 April 2015.

The program promised an in-depth insight into what happened to road crash victims and the aftermath from injuries and fatalities.

There was a warning that some of the content would be graphic, and it was.

Lead Sen Con Gavin Nash spoke of the sta-

tistics worldwide, nationally and in the eastern region.

In Maroondah, the Yarra Ranges and Knox alone, 754 people have been injured in roadrelated incidents since 2013.

Speaking on the effect of those statistics, Mr Holland demonstrated the ripple effect on attendees.

“I’m going to ask these three here to stand up for us,” he said.

“These three people are our passengers.

"Passengers in a vehicle involved in a serious collision.

"These three young people will carry these scars for the rest of their lives.”

By the end, 500 people were standing as Tim demonstrated how, like a stone thrown into water, the ripples expanded outwards to impact lives.

The program addressed the risks of alcohol, drugs, speed, inexperience, distraction and

peer group pressure.

Det Sgt Amos reminded young drivers about their responsibility to themselves, family and other road users.

“When you get in that car as drivers you have an enormous amount of responsibility,” he said.

“Do what you believe to be right and say that to your friends, push the peer group to point of ensuring that the right thing is done and above everything else, don’t become a memorial.

"Don’t end up a bunch of flowers on a tree."

The five guest speakers covered responsibility and consequences from very different and personal perspectives.

Their stories were raw and real and addressed the hidden road toll, beyond the raw statistics of how many people died on the roads each year.

The Mail will tell share these stories in coming weeks.

Raising the rail a real solution: Merlino The State Government has unveiled plans to remove Lilydale's Maroondah Highway level crossing.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan joined Monbulk MP James Merlino to reveal designs for the project, as well as those for Manchester Road in Mooroolbark, on Monday 5 August.

They included new elevated stations and up to 450 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Mooroolbark.

At Lilydale, the station and bus interchange will be relocated to better integrate with the town centre.

Walking and cycling connections will be improved between the town centre, new sta-

tion and the Lilydale-Warburton Trail.

"Removing these level crossings and building two new stations will make a huge difference for Lilydale and Mooroolbark," Mr Merlino said.

More than 53,000 vehicles use the two crossings each day, where the boom gates can be down for up to a quarter of the morning peak.

There have been 13 crashes at the two sites in the past decade, including one fatal.

Ms Allan and Mr Merlino said the preferred designs were up to 18 months quicker to build than lowering the rail line into a trench.

They said this would mean less impact on

residents, traders and transport users.

Lowering the line would also mean extensive land acquisition, more trees lost, relocating major underground services and an increased flood risk.

"These rail bridges and state of the art stations will transform these communities - reducing congestion, boosting safety and making it easier to get to and from the train," Ms Allan said.

The project will be complete in 2022 and will lay the ground work for further line upgrades, including duplicating sections of the Lilydale line and a potential new station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale.

Mount Dandenong Primary School took to the stage at the Frankston Arts Centre on on Monday 12 August for Wakakirri - Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools, telling story through dance.

‘Waka’ as the Mount Dandenong Primary community calls it is a much-loved tradition, with generations of students taking part over the past 12 years.

This is Mount Dandenong’s sixth Waka performance, with the school having a track record at Waka of making the finals each time.

This year’s performance is called Where the

Wildlings Are and tells the story of the tussle between corporate development and hills locals who wish to keep the unique environment as it is.

Principal Sally Alderton said Wakakirri was a true community effort, with everyone at the school getting involved.

“Our school community comes together to create all of the wonderful costumes and sets, plus to promote whole-school collaboration, we open Waka to the younger students so that everyone from Year 1 onwards can be part of the Waka experience,“ she said.

“Every second year we work with the students to find out what sort of issue or story

they’re interested in telling.

“Two years ago, it was the plight of the bees and we went through to the finals.

“This years performance tells the story of Where the Wildlings Are, a place where nature and wildlings co-exist harmoniously until developers arrive to change the landscape.

“Protestors help the wildlings to keep the environment safe from developer’s disastrous work - for now.

“The teachers and students chose this topic for Waka as it is resonates with our community, the ongoing tussle to preserve the hills environment from over-development.”

A performance worthy of Parliament

By Derek Schlennstedt The Hills Flute Choir are performing in the Queens Hall at Parliament House during the lunch break of the sitting of parliament, on August 14.

The choir, which is made up of flute students in local primary schools around the Dandenong Ranges have been rehearsing weekly and practising at home.

In Schools Music Musical Director Andrew McAllister said six students will perform at the parliamentary sitting.

“These are our top flute students and they’ve been working very hard, practicing on Sundays, and we’ve been working towards this for the last 6 months,” Mr McAlister said.

“We’re performing at Queens Hall, which is known for its acoustics ... the flutes will sound

amazing and musicians love playing it because it makes everything sounds really good.”

The students taking part are in grades three to six and come from different schools around the Dandenong Ranges.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino will give the students a tour of Parliament House, before they perform at the parliament lunch.

Upwey Primary School students Caitlin and Hermione said they were excited to see ‘where all the laws were made’, and said they’ve been hard at work practicing.

Crushing age barriers

Service applauded "Australia let you down. You didn't fail us - we failed you. You didn't dishonour us - we dishonoured you."

Casey MP Tony Smith didn't hold back in his speech to the annual Yarra Valley and Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans Day Service, held in Croydon on Sunday 11 August.

"Today is a day to applaud you and thank you for your service," he said.

"Today is a day to thank your families and today is a day for us to reflect and to recommit ourselves as a nation; that never again will we let down or abandon those who served our nation."

OEMVVAA president Aff Binnoore said the

"Over 15 years ago a small number of veterans in the Yarra Valley saw the need to bring together their fellow Vietnam veterans as they saw that many were suffering from various issues attributed to their service," he said.

Mr Smith said the service was held on or around Long Tan Day every year.

"The Battle of Long Tan was an epic battle that epitomised the spirit, courage and valour, and integrity of those who served in Vietnam in every battle," he said.

"But we cannot stand here in good conscience half a century on and speak of how our Vietnam Veterans served us, without speaking

of how we served them on their return.

"The entire Australian community let down our Vietnam veterans.

"You fully expected to face bullets on the battlefield and in the rubber plantations, but you rightly didn't expect the verbal bullets fired at you by many of your fellow citizens on your return.

"Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War was controversial.

"I make no argument that those who strongly opposed the war didn't have a right to do so.

"But their quarrel was with the government of the day - not those who served at their government's direction."

Great weather for ducks - and mud trials

With mud the order of the day, the Austin Seven Club couldn't have asked for a better weekend to host its Lilydale Observed Section Trial.

The events are known as mud trials or sporting trials in other parts of the world and are an integral part of the Austin Seven Club.

Sunday 11 August was the 70th John Pryce Memorial Trial at Lilydale.

There are about 12 trials held annually, but the weekend's was the best known.

It was originally named the Park Orchards Trial because of its location in the Melbourne outer suburb, but was relocated and named the John Pryce Memorial Trial in honour of the renowned club member who introduced the sport to Australia in 1950.

Mail photographer Greg Carrick attended and snapped some of the action - from what we hope was a safe distance to avoid mudspray!

For many years, the weights room in a gym was the domain of the young, ripped 'gym-bros'.

However, times are changing and the socalled "testoster-zone" is gradually becoming more diverse, with women and older people discovering the life-changing power of lifting weights.

One of those people leading the charge is Robert Frost, a 70-year-old, from Monbulk who is able to deadlift 140kgs - twice his own body weight .

Proving that it's never too late to pick up the weights, Mr Frost first ventured into the world of strength training when he competed at the Masters Games in Adelaide in 2015 and won a medal for his age category.

Since then, the septuagenarian has been competing in the biennial Masters Games, and slowly but surely increasing the weight.

"I train every other day, really," he said.

"I'll train Monday doing deadlifts, Tuesday's a rest day, on Wednesday is bench press, Thursday's a rest and so on ... . I don't think about the week too much as I'm retired, so I can train any day if I want."

"I just turned 70 which means I'm now in masters 3, which include people aged 70-79."

"I'm now competing against people who are older than me, which gives me an advantage," he joked.

At the 2017 Australian Masters Games, Frost reached a personal best in all three events.

This year he hopes to improve on his personal best and said he should easily bench press 50kg, complete a 100kg squat and a deadlift of 140kg. ""This time I aim to lift a total of 280kgs, which could make me the strongest power lifter in my class in Australia."

"The first attempt will be a weight I know I can lift - a light weight. The second will be my best lift in training and the third lift -if I get that far - is a lift I haven't ever done before."

Frost, who trains at the Monbulk Aquatic Centre, said he hopes to encourage other people to try weightlifting.

"It's not some secret, it's just doing the exercises and consistency of training."

Though, he admitted that diet is just as important as training, which is why he's on the lookout for a nutrition coach.

"What I need is a Nutrition Coach to monitor protein-intake and overall diet," he said."It'd be great is someone could get on board again and give me a spot."

Frost will compete in the Australian Masters Games in South Australia from 5-12 October.

Killing Heidi rocks

By Romy Stephens It's not every day a small-town Aussie band makes the big time. But when they do, it's rare to see them up-close performing on home soil.

For Killing Heidi lead singer Ella Hooper, tearing up the stage in venues across her home state of Victoria brings back fond memories.

"It definitely feels like home and I feel like people (here) have a slight ownership over us," she said.

"It sort of feels like how we started out, like going full circle."

Ella and her brother Jesse formed Killing Heidi in Violet Town, a small country town almost 200 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

They first hit the music scene in 2000 with folk-pop song Kettle through triple j Unearthed before bursting onto the national and international stage with debut album Reflector.

Smash hits Weir and Mascara helped them take home four ARIA awards and take the album to four-times platinum status.

Since taking time apart in 2006 the band has reunited and spent most of this year touring around Australia.

They will hit Victoria in August and, due to popular demand, will perform at numerous small-town venues such as the York On Lilydale in Mount Evelyn.

The group is no stranger to the venue, having performed at the Hotter Than Hell Festival last year.

Ella admitted there was something special about performing in small hotels and pubs like the York.

"You do get to know places over time. We loved it there and that was such a great festival, that was a real vibe for us," she said.

"You get a real connection with specific

Ella said that audiences attending the York show in August could expect a more polished performance compared to last year, as well as a few surprises.

"We're always improving the show and adding things to it," she said.

"Perhaps a new cover with a special guest artist...and new outfits."

Killing Heidi will hit the stage at the York On Lilydale on 24 August.

Mount Evelyn students are ready to rock.

Yarra Hills Secondary College is putting its own spin on the Ben Elton live show We Will Rock You. The stage production is based on the music of the band Queen, and it was the students who suggested paying tribute to the Freddie Mercury-fronted rockers.

They've put months of work into the show, rehearsing since April.

They'll take to the stage at the Yarra Hills Mount Evelyn campus from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 August.

Daisy West debut album

The exciting soul rock band, which hails from the Dandenong Ranges plays music that has deep musical substance and their sound is based on the essential elements of great song writing and long honed, tasteful musicianship Fronted by the gifted Blin Vanheems, whose voice is as supple as it is powerful, the band has a sound that is at once timeless yet contemporary.

Singer/Songwriter Blin spoke to the Mail and said there was a strong tinge of wonderland within the band's music.

"Imagine if you will, an Alice like character, grasping at her guitar, leading a band of runcible souls in musical mayhem, at once psychedelic and danceable with meaningful songs, whimsical twists and lickable grooves."

Those runcible souls include Jeff Springfield on Bass, Josh Licht on Drums, and Cam Walter on guitar.

The album, which features 12 original songs

is an invitation to journey into Rock and Roll Dandenong Ranges style, and the only thing common about Daisy West's debut full album is the title.

Blin said the band has lovingly created each song, and that it took a number of years for the album to come together.

"The album again pretty soul infused and it's taken a couple of years, as we've toiled over it quite a bit ... I guess it's had a lot of love and work put into it from the get go."

"Usually I'm just writing alone and it'll be inspired really by whatever I'm going through, it's never a forced or planned type of thing - a song will come out when it does."

"I've been lucky enough to then bring it to the band who are all really intuitive and then put their own inflections into it."

The band will launch their album at Sooki Lounge on the evening of 23 August.

Midsommar, Hereditary director Ari Aster's second feature film, is another slow-burning masterpiece of modern horror.

Depressed Dani (Florence Pugh), her distant boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) and his friends attend a summer solstice festival at a secluded commune in Sweden, only to be trapped in a nightmarish ritual.

Feeling very much like a spiritual successor to The Wicker Man, Midsommar features a near-perfect balance of tension, character growth and world-building.

Pugh delivers a remarkable performance, both effortless and heavy with pathos, as a withdrawn woman shaken by a family tragedy.

Peer pressure and unequal relationship dynamics are major catalysts for the ensuing horror, and the commune's nurturing atmosphere steadily sours as its more disturbing rituals emerge.

Midsommar features some staggering cinematography, with elaborate long takes and several ingenious shots using reflections to imply emotional distance between the characters.

Throughout the film Aster further displays his gift for crafting grand, noble spectacles from graphic, often sickening, imagery and it is both unsettling and uplifting to see Dani embraced by the commune, as they give her the affirmation and sense of family she craves.

Midsommar is another subversive, character-rich triumph from one of the greatest modern horror directors.

A Centre for Excellence

By Derek Schlennstedt AFL players of all ages and abilities will now have access to the redeveloped Centre for Excellence in Kilsyth.

This Kilsyth Centre for Excellence is home to the AFL Victorian Eastern Ranges Football Club and the AFL Yarra Ranges Region Commission, with the upgrade delivering elite male and female training and facilities specialising in coaching and player development, and further opportunities for youths of all skill levels.

The upgrades include a multi-purpose space, mixed gender change rooms, umpire spaces, a kitchen, administration facilities, gymnasium, storage and associated amenities to support more than 3500 people who use the centre, including more than 300 junior interleague athletes, with a further 500 participants involved in coaching education and development programs.

Ontop of this, the upgrade also enable an AFL Youth Girls Academy to be run out of

Kilsyth, allowing more than 120 female participants to train at the state-of-the-art site, with future games also an option.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino joined community members on 2 August to open the newly completed sporting hub.

"It's exciting to see the Growing Suburbs Fund bring a new home to Aussie Rules in our area with the bigger and better Kilsyth Centre for Excellence.

"Girls and boys, kids and adults will get to

enjoy this new centre. I hope to see the next generation of worldclass Aussie rules stars come through this centre, made possible by our Growing Suburbs Fund."

The project was delivered by the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, which contributed $1 million towards the centre.

The Australian Government, through the Community Development Grants Program and the AFL, provided $500,000 and $550,000 respectively towards the project.

Hills Challenge retained in slippery mud

By Jamie Strudley The annual Hills Challenge event hosted by Cockatoo Little Athletics was held in perfect cross country conditions on Saturday 10 August.

A wet, slippery, muddy, hilly course and very cold conditions greeted the team from Yarra Ranges Athletics.

Once again, exceptional team spirit and support in the trying conditions were the key to retaining the much sought-after trophy.

Mother nature managed to upset the plans of more than 1000 athletes intending to run at Cruden Farm on Saturday at round eight of the Athletics Victoria XCR19.

A flooded course and many fallen trees made the course unusable.

On Saturday 24 August, seven club athletes will represent Victoria at the Australian Cross Country Championships in Wollongong, New South Wales.

Selected athletes are Grace Muller (Women Under-20), Harry Norman (Men Under-20), James Laven (Men Under-20), Mia Strudley (Women Under-16), Maddie Laven (Women Under-16), Kiara Flavel (Women Under-16) and Zoe Clarke (Girls Under-10).

The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability.

Hawkettes through to grand final Monbulk Junior Football Club's Hawkettes are through to their grand final.

The Under-14 side defeated Emerald on Sunday 11 August, 3.5.23 to 1.2.8.

The team expected a high-pressure, physical game from Emerald and knew that its first efforts were imperative to the results.

To play the game in the now and produce second and third efforts with pressure, being first to the ball and using their finishing off skills gave the girls what they needed.

The Hawkettes proved that the game mattered, and they wanted the opportunity of being competitive with Mount Evelyn in the grand final.

Olinda Ferny Creek hosted Beaconsfield in Arctic conditions at the Olinda Recreation Reserve for Round 15 of Outer East Premier Division Netball.

After a heavy dumping of snow overnight followed by another sprinkling at 8.30am on Saturday morning (10 August) it was unclear if play would go ahead.

But thanks to the hard work of volunteers Mick Hill and Ross Seymour, the court was made up to match standard for the start of play.

Full credit went to all the players, umpires and supports staff who ploughed through the day in such cold conditions and still produced outstanding netball.

Beaconsfield won the three contests of the day with strong performances in D-grade (34 to 20), C-grade (29 to 20) and B-grade (50 to 42).

Olinda Ferny Creek then took honours in the A-grade top-of-the-table clash by seven goals (43 to 36).

This week Olinda Ferny Creek will host Berwick at Olinda Recreation Reserve in hopefully more hospitable conditions.

Upsets shake things up

By Nick Creely The final spot in the AFL Outer East Premier Division top five is one step closer to be finalised, with an intriguing round of action in horrendous conditions seeing two major upsets shake things up.

In arguably the biggest upset of the season, Cranbourne defied the horrendous conditions at Edwin Flack Reserve to stun Berwick, 7.4 (46) to 6.6 (42).

Helping Cranbourne’s cause was the second major boilover of the round, with Upwey Tecoma stunning Wandin at home to put a dent in the Dogs’ finals hopes, 11.6 (72) to 8.15 (63).

The Dogs settled quicker than the home side to take in a seemingly match-winning lead of 27 points at the major break, but the Tigers fought back to slash the margin to 14 with a quarter to play.

With the momentum behind them, the Tigers kicked five goals to one in the final term, running away with the game and seeing the Dogs fall six points - and hefty percentage behind Cranbourne in fifth.

In a terrific day for the Tigers, Liam Beacom was outstanding, while Aaron Grenda slotted three to be the most dangerous forward on the ground.

In the remaining matches of Premier, Beaconsfield toppled Olinda Ferny Creek away from home, 13.13 (91) to 7.12 (54), while Woori Yallock did what it needed to against Healesville, 11.19 (85) to 1.4 (10).

Narre Warren had the bye.

There was also a major shake-up in Division 1, with Monbulk relinquishing top spot after going down convincingly to a brilliant Doveton at AJ Robinson Oval, 15.7 (97) to 7.5 (47).

Pakenham is the beneficiary of the Hawks’ loss, with their barnstorming win against Warburton Millgrove seeing them jump into top spot, 11.8 (74) to 1.2 (8).

The Lions were never really challenged in a one-sided contest, with Liam Tyrrell’s excellent campaign continuing with another solid game for the victors.

Gembrook Cockatoo, meanwhile, banked another vital win as it looks to cement a Division 2 finals spot against Thornton Eildon, 19.14 (128) to 3.3 (21).

Big man Hamish McIntosh was in vintage touch for the Brookers with a bag of six, while Colin Bastow was best afield for the third straight week, continuing his fine season.

In the other Division 2 matches across the weekend, Kinglake defeated Yarra Junction, 12.9 (81) to 5.8 (38), Yarra Glen were a class above Alexandra, 27.21 (183) to 8.8 (56), while Powelltown got the better of Yea, 18.14 (122) to 3.5 (23).
