Danger driver forgets

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A driver said he had no recollection of sliding onto the wrong side of the road, forcing a fullyladen fuel tanker to take evasive action during a police chase through Dandenong and Rowville, a court heard.

“F***, sounds pretty serious,” Bodhan Dunn, 25, later told police.

“I honestly don’t remember.”

In June 2018, an unmarked police car followed Dunn as he dramatically accelerated and braked, wove through traffic and veered out of lanes on Princes Highway, Clow Street and Stud Road.

Dunn turned onto Wellington Road, accelerating rapidly and losing traction into the path of the fuel tanker.

Police told the court that a serious crash was avoided only due to the truck driver’s evasive action.

At another turn at a Wellington Road intersection, he skidded across three lanes. He travelled down EastLink without registering a toll due to the false number plates on his unregistered blue Holden.

Back on Princes Highway, he ran a red light.

He deliberately fishtailed for about 80 metres on Heatherton Road before he was boxed in by police.

At the time, Dunn - a suspended driver on a

0.00 blood-alcohol interlock condition - smelt of liquor, police claimed.

He refused to give a breath test; a disconnected interlock was found in the driver’s side footwell.

Police told the court that the inside edges of the Holden’s bare rear tyres were worn down to their wire frames.

Dunn pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and a string of traffic offences.

He also admitted to charges of criminal damage for smashing his mobile phone and then flinging a second phone through his mother’s TV screen.

Dunn’s priors included drink-driving, dangerous driving, recklessly causing injury and assault, the court heard.

On 30 July, Dandenong magistrate Tara Hartnett described the driving as “appalling, appalling offending”, and the criminal damage revealing “shocking attitude”.

Ms Hartnett said Dunn would face immediate jail but for the driving offences being more than 12 months old.

Instead she was considering a community corrections order to minimise his risk of reoffending - taking into account his young age, Aboriginal background and family support.

He was bailed to appear on 31 July for a community corrections order assessment and sentencing.

PT ‘pervert’ denied bail

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Springvale man accused of a spate of lewd acts on trains and at railway stations has been refused bail.

The 24-year-old denied the latest alleged indecent act - in front of two children on a train - during the bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 July.

Through an interpreter, he added: “Even if I’m found guilty, this will be the last time.

“Can you give me one last chance?”

The man was on summons for sexual assault and on a community corrections order

for other sexual offences when he caught an evening train at Springvale railway station on 28 June.

He sat diagonally opposite 17-year-old and 16-year-old girls and performed a lewd act for several minutes.

One of the girls took photos of the man, who was staring at them during his activity.

They later reported him to a railway station PSO. The man was also accused with plying a female with synthetic cannabis and grabbing her breasts at Flinders Street railway station

on 18 March.

The complainant told police she had been unable to move after inhaling the substance. A third-party intervened to stop the assault.

The man was on summons for that matter, to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 22 August.

He was also recently accused of two separate lewd acts in front of females in a public toilet and on a railway station platform.

Police remand liaison officer Sergeant Brett Morrison told the court that the man was an “unacceptable risk” on bail.

Police had “significant concerns” for female commuters on public transport, Sgt Morrison said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there was no compelling reason for the man’s release.

The CCO was “not sufficient” to address the applicant’s behaviour, he said.

“The charges are serious.

“Given the frequency of the offences ... I’m of the view that you’re a clear risk of reoffending.”

The man was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 14 August.

Affordable home shortage deepens for the homeless

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nearly 10,000 new households are needed in Greater Dandenong to cope with population growth in the next five years, according to homelessness agency Wayss.

On the eve of a Homelessness Week event in Dandenong on 9 August, Wayss chief executive Elizabeth Thomas says the projected 32,000 extra residents will bring yet more pressure on the municipality's affordable housing shortage.

It comes on top of rising house and rental costs, stagnant incomes and "completely inadequate" Newstart allowances, she says.

In recent census figures, nearly 2000 people were sleeping rough or living in overcrowded conditions in Greater Dandenong.

Alarmingly overcrowded accommodation comes with increased fire and health risks, Ms Thomas says.

"In one recent example we have seen, a family of 10 arrived from interstate to live in Dandenong, only to discover there were already 16 people living in their pre-arranged accommodation.

"The woman and her children were then homeless and has sought assistance from Wayss."

The situation is causing residents to look further afield for a home, in Casey-Cardinia and Gippsland.

"This is deeply concerning," Ms Thomas said.

"People are then removed even further from their communities, their extended family and friends, employment opportunities and established support and service networks."

Ms Thomas called on property investors, governments, community services and businesses to work together for a solution.

"Mandatory inclusionary zoning and other incentive based, voluntary, initiatives for property developers that increase site density and development cost affordability should all be on table for discussion."

One solution has been offered by not-forprofit HomeGround Real Estate, established

HomeGround manages 210 tenancies across greater Melbourne. As an incentive, landlords can apply for a tax deduction to help cover the 'gap' between the property's true market value and the low-market rate.

"A lot of our landlords are socially aware.

They're looking at a way to help."

She says there needs to be more government funding, and more landlords offering their properties for a low rate.

There are vast generalisations and myths associated with why people are homeless, Ms Curley says.

"People think homelessness is just people sleeping rough. It's a much, much greater issue that that.

"It could be as a result of the loss of employment or an illness. A lot of people are at risk it's just a couple of pay cheques away."

Wayss is collaborating with City of Greater Dandenong to stage the 9 August community event themed as Housing Ends Homelessness.

Launch Housing, Monash Health, Wellsprings for Women, Salvation Army, Springvale Learning and Activity Centre and other agencies will be at the awareness-raising event.

Donations of blankets and non-perishable food will be accepted on the day.

Greater Dandenong is facilitating a consortium of 13 organisations to coordinate material aid to people in need.

The Homelessness Week event is at Harmony Square, Dandenong on 9 August, 11.30am1.30pm.

Man charged with Noble Park murder A man has been charged with the murder of a woman, whose body was found in a home in Douglas Street, Noble Park on Monday 29 July.

The 36-year-old man had been arrested in Doveton by Homicide Squad detectives that day, and taken to hospital under police guard.

He was charged with murder on the afternoon of 30 July.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday 1 August.

“We’re their largest competitor. As soon as we’re out of the way, it allows Community Chef to put themselves out there as the only one left in the system.”

After the criminal matters, Mr Cook expects to resume his Supreme Court lawsuit against the council and the Department of Health and Human Services.

He says he will seek damages for the destruction of his company and reputation.

“They’ve destroyed us. They set us up.”

A Greater Dandenong Council spokesper-

son said it took the allegations by I Cook Foods “extremely seriously”.

The council said it had referred the matter to IBAC, which in turn referred the matter to the Victorian Ombudsman for an initial review.

“Following that review the Ombudsman has determined that no further investigation is warranted.”

Ms Rogerson has filed an appeal against the Ombudsman’s assessment, alleging a “number of errors” in the investigation.

The case was adjourned for a contest mention at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October.

Major contract win for Wallara marked

During the official opening party on Friday 2 August, Mark Harrington of CPB Contractors announced on behalf of Rail Systems Alliance that Wallara would be contributing to the upgrade of signalling equipment for high capacity trains across Melbourne, by storing, picking, packing and sending equipment components to key locations for the infrastructure project.

Premier Daniel Andrews was also on hand to help officially open the new facility, in an event that doubled as the organisation's 60th birthday.

After a comprehensive tour of the facility, during which he was shown around by members of Wallara's Employee Representative Committee, the premier announced $35,000 in funding for automatic doors on the building's atrium as a finishing touch for employees.

"If somebody invites you to their birthday

party, you should bring a gift," he joked during the announcement.

He also expressed his pride in Wallara's work and hinted that there may be further work in the pipeline for the organisation to take on.

Mr Simcocks said the premier's endorsement of the organisation was important to employees.

"We're not just a commercial enterprise, we're about providing workplace opportunities for people of all abilities and he highlighted that, and the quality of work that he was able to recognise that our people produce."

Police are investigating a violent brawl that erupted on the pitch and sidelines of a soccer game at Ross Reserve, Noble Park on Friday night (2 August).

In wild scenes, about 50 spectators invaded the arena at the Springvale City-Sandown Lions State League 4 clash at the 88th minute.

A Springvale City senior player reportedly had his front teeth knocked out during the riot and required dental surgery.

Police, including its Public Order Response Team, were called to Memorial Drive about 10.15pm. A 23-year-old man was struck by a rock and declined medical attention, police say.

Greater Dandenong councillor Tim Dark has called on the council to ban both clubs from playing on council reserves, pending Football Victoria's investigation into the riot.

"On Friday night, both were to blame for what occurred. Neither team should play this weekend.

"Until we can investigate what factors were behind it, the risk is too great to have them playing on City of Greater Dandenong reserves where patrons are watching soccer and put at risk."

He said associates of both clubs were "to blame" for the violence. Several players were bleeding and some sheltered in the pavilion.

"The ground went into lockdown".

Cr Dark said he'd previously raised issues about Sandown Lions fans such as abuse hurled at young families and spectators from opposition.

Sandown Lions secretary Bol Luak said the club would not comment, pending Football Victoria's findings.

"We submitted a match report to Football Victoria so we're waiting for them to investigate.

"At this stage the club has decided not to make an official statement to the media. We don't want to jeopardise the investigation."

Mr Luak said Cr Dark's call for a temporary ban was not "absolutely necessary". He alluded to a game involving Springvale City being called off due to a brawl earlier this season.

Springvale City player Steven Sharifi told reporters that the player who lost his teeth had been trying to break up the fights.

"It was just horrendous. It's not something you want to see on a soccer pitch.

"Someone needs to take action."

A defiant Ian Cook has vowed to fight up to 96 charges levelled by Greater Dandenong Council at him and his commercial catering company iCook Foods.

He says his $26 million Dandenong South company has been wrongfully ruined since it was blamed for the listeria-related death of an elderly hospital patient and shut down by authorities for 36 days in February and March.

Mr Cook arrived at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 August to plead not guilty to what he says are “trumped-up” breaches of food safety laws.

“The inconsistencies, the lies and fabrications have been quite phenomenal,” he told reporters.

“It’s quite disgusting.”

The matter was adjourned for contest mention in October.

Outside the court, Mr Cook claimed that a council inspector planted a slug in the factory.

“I’ll allege it all day long or someone can explain how it could happen.”

It comes on top of recent claims by whistle-blower and former Greater Dandenong health inspector Kim Rogerson that she was pressured to fabricate evidence against iCook Foods.

“She’s never seen a council home in on a particular company with an intention to destroy them,” Mr Cook said.

“We have passed every audit for the past 30 years in Dandenong - three audits a year - and then within three days they had us shut and done and dusted.”

Families bring real thing

By Cam Lucadou-Wells There's no doubt that Little Peddler is the real deal - or as they say the "real nonya" - for traditional Malaysian food.

In other words, the flavours are no holds barred from East Malaysia, Kuching and Sarawak regions.

Its curry puff with a melting, buttery pastry and a bitingly sharp sardine, potato and chilli sambal filling is a unique must-try.

Another is a deeply flavoursome prawnand-clam noodle dish known as Char Kueh Tiaw (CKT). Infused in oyster sauce, it's also available in beef or tofu versions.

Married couple Antonia and Chhee Law have brought the hawker-style of their popular St Kilda eatery into Dandenong Market - making use of the 153-year-old market's fresh veg, meats and seafoods.

"I grew up here," Antonia says. "I went here ever since the fishmongers and butchers were laid out in a line.

"I always wanted to be part of the market."

She's been a cook since she was chopping vegies and cooking rice at 7.

Chhee said he didn't want to "Westernise" the traditional Malay offerings. "We decided we would serve our food as we would eat it."

Little Peddler's cosy layout displays foods from eyeline to ceiling. It's a warm place from another world.

The other pleasant aspect is that Antonia's parents Van and Ngoc Nguyen's Little Asia eatery lives next door. It's an intimate family corner, with each of their frenetic kitchens opening to one another.

On the Little Asia's thick round chopping board, Van heaves a large cleaver as he slices barbecued meats such as Peking duck.

The Nguyens, who also run a Springvale outlet, offer great South Vietnamese Rachgia lunch fare such as pork sliders with the most incredibly succulent crackling.

Most popular in winter are the spicy noodle soups known as BBH (Bun Bo Hue). One of them is a medley of white pork meat loaf, beef balls, pork jelly, spring onions and coriander.

Carjacker in the lock-up

A smorgasbord of pursuits were on offer as part of an all-abilities, all-sports fun day at Edinburgh Reserve, Springvale.

About 250 students from the South-East region as far away as Mornington enjoyed soccer, gymnastics, netball, cricket and Aussie Rules at the 30 July event.

One of the highlights was a Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) exhibition game.

There also a sports expo and giveaways at the event hosted by Sandown Cobras All Abilities Sports.

A carjacker who clenched a padlock and struck his male victim twice in the neck has been jailed for up to 12 months.

Dut Dengshok, 29, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault and carjacking the silver Mitsubishi 380 in Fifth Avenue in Dandenong on 21 May. He was found with ice and heroin on his person at the time.

Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 August that Dengshok had long struggled with a heroin addiction as well as an unsettled adolescence.

He was living in a boarding house at the time of the incident.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Dengshok’s extensive criminal history of driving, property offences and assaults.

Dengshok hadn’t previously been convicted for carjacking or robbery, the court heard.

The jail term consisted of a five-month non-parole period - and included 71 days in pre-sentence remand.

In imposing a “shorter” non-parole period, Mr Vandersteen factored in the offender’s relatively young age and his need for drug treatment to “stop the cycle of coming before the court”.

Addict stigma

By Cam Lucadou-Wells People are more willing to report their drinking problem, mental health issue or affair than admit they have a gambling issue.

Such is the crushing stigma faced by gambling addicts, says Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation chief executive Shane Lucas.

During a meeting in Dandenong on 2 August, Mr Lucas heard the personal story of a counsellor's family friend who took his own life.

Friends can't be sure that it was the gambling problem that led him to his self-destruction. But they knew of the man's deep inconsolable shame over his addiction.

"We have research that people would rather tell you anything than tell you they have a gambling problem," Mr Lucas said.

The language of the gambling industry foists the onus directly on the gambler, Mr Lucas argues. Or in other words, if you have a gambling problem it's directly your fault.

It minimizes the influence of other personal issues or that the person is under sway of an addiction, he says.

According to official 2018-'19 statistics, Greater Dandenong poker machines continue to reap about $119.3 million.

It equates to $910 lost per Greater Dandenong adult.

Greater Dandenong is fourth-highest in pokies losses in metropolitan Melbourne behind Brimbank ($143 million), Casey ($132

million) and Whittlesea ($120 million), and has the second-most poker machines in Victoria council areas (957).

The council area's residents are also among the most socio-economically disadvantaged - and also vulnerable to gambling harm, Mr Lucas said.

Some of its many CALD communities were particularly vulnerable due to social isolation as well as the prevalence of local machines.

The VRGF doesn't seek to ban pokies, but works towards reducing harm to the most vulnerable, such as funding SICMAA to reach out to gamblers in Springvale's Vietnamese community.

SICMAA supported nearly 100 clients in 2018-'19, with a further 1200 taking part in group activities.

With VRGF funding, Connect Health and Community provided counselling to 1228 clients "at the pointy end" of harm in the south metro region.

The foundation is also looking towards campaigns against the "normalization" of gambling, such as sports betting companies.

Pokies is the province of an ageing demographic; sports betting and online gambling is attracting a younger crowd, Mr Lucas says.

As a parent, it strikes him home when he sees that online children's games carry the same "architecture" as adult gambling sites.

A prevalence study report on the types of gambling will be released by October-November.

Moo-ving pictures milked Students at Hallam Primary School have made a cow their canvas as part of a Picasso Cows program.

Their painting of a large fibreglass cow, dubbed Mrs Cowington III, shows the journey of milk from farm to fridge.

It was an element of a Dairy Australia course that also taught students on nutrition and the impact of drought on food supplies.

Spokesperson Vanessa Forrest said the Farm to Plate curriculum provided insight into the $13 billion Australian dairy industry.

"With many children increasingly growing up in urban areas, they often don't know where their food comes from and Picasso Cows is a great opportunity to educate the next generation."

Bail is refused despite backdown by ‘victim’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A wife allegedly bashed and strangled by her ex-husband over a three-day period has declined to give evidence against him, a bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

She also supported the dropping of charges including assault, threat to kill and persistent breaching of a family violence intervention order, as well as her alleged perpetrator's immediate release on bail.

The man has denied the allegations.

Acoording to police, the man had threatened her with a knife at Dandenong Oasis swimming pool, as well as in her own home.

He'd also woke her up in her own home at 1.30am - in breach of an intervention order, the court heard.

On 9 June, amidst another argument, the man allegedly slapped the victim's face and dragged her around the house.

He started "poking" a knife around her chest area, confiscated her phone and dragged her out to his car, the court was told.

As he drove, he choked her and threatened to kill her or her family as well as to commit self-harm, police alleged.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen refused bail, despite accepting a defence lawyer's submission that there were "compelling reasons" for the man's release.

"It comes down to this. I'm not comfortable in releasing you on bail. I'm not confident that the risk of you reoffending can be reduced to an acceptable level."

He dismissed arguments that the prosecution case was weak.

"There is a sworn statement (by the wife). It is cogent. The allegations in it are serious.

"It is in the back-drop of there being arguments over a dowry and an allegation of an as-

sault on 11 March.

"There have been further assaults, if not an escalation, by you on 7 June, 8 June, 9 June and 15 June."

Mr Vandersteen rejected the two addresses suggested for bail - either in Endeavour Hills or with a sister in Western Australia - as unsuitable "in the absence of any evidence".

"Even if the evidence was before the court, it does not reduce the risk of you reoffending against your ex-wife."

A defence lawyer argued that the allegations relied entirely on the wife's evidence. She had since made a 'no-complaint' statement that she was yet to sign, the lawyer said.

There was no corroborative evidence of injury, no CCTV or independent witnesses despite the allegations being set in "numerous public locations", the court heard.

Two other witnesses also refused to give a police statement.

The 30-year-old accused had no prior history, was well-educated as a maritime electrical engineer and was recently diagnosed with diabetes and depression, the court heard.

Spending the past six weeks in remand, the accused sat in the dock with an interpreter. He was a vulnerable prisoner due to language barriers, the lawyer told the court.

Police had opposed bail due to the man being an unacceptable risk to his ex-partner. A prosecutor conceded its case had "some evidentiary issues".

The man was remanded to appear at a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 August.

Our selfless volunteers Community members and groups from across the City of Casey were honoured on Friday 26 July evening at the Casey Volunteer Awards Ceremony.

Clive Butler was announced as the Individual Volunteer of the Year thanks to his outstanding service in Casey across the past 35 years.

"I certainly did come as a surprise," he said.

"If I join a club and I can help in some way well then I put my hand up."

The 89-year-old has volunteered with St Andrew's Berwick Uniting Church since the late 1980's, and has also coordinated the fundraising for Transit Soup Kitchen in Narre Warren.

"I have to be involved if something interests me - and that's basically what drives me," Mr Butler said.

Sadia Batool Ali received a Highly Commended Award in this category for her work in the community assisting Hazara women to settle in Australia.

In a first for the awards, Jessica Borstelj and Tarali Bendix were the two joint winners of the Casey Young Volunteer Award.

Jessica is a horse care volunteer with the Riding for Disabled, while Tarali, at just 11 years of age, is a dedicated junior coach at Berwick Flames Basketball Club.

The Casey Volunteering Pair Award was awarded to Ian and Carmel Cuthbertson, a husband and wife duo who have volunteered for many of the Westernport's coastal safety causes, from transmitting daily weather and safety information to ships at sea, to radio listening and assisting in the rescue of stranded boats. They also volunteer with a guide dog pet therapy program in hospitals.

The longstanding Doveton Show Committee were recognised as the Casey Volunteer Group Award winners, for their efforts as organisers of the iconic event.

Reunited with lifesaver 30 years on after cardiac arrest

By Mitchell Clarke Almost 30 years to the day between catch ups, local man Tim Stinear was reunited with Ian Smith, the paramedic credited with saving his life.

On 25 July 1989, then-university student Tim suffered a cardiac arrest in the Monash University pool and Ian, who was working at the Waverley branch, was dispatched.

“We attached our monitor and Tim was in a rhythm that we could defibrillate so we gave him one shock through our new cardiac monitor that we had on the cars and he sat up shortly after and started coughing,” Mr Smith said.

While Tim doesn’t recall the fateful day, he does remember the email he received out of the blue from Ian, which asked whether he was the Tim Stinear that used to live in Upper Beaconsfield and if he was resuscitated at a pool in 1989.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Mr Stinear said.

“An opportunity to reconnect, it was just an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, not that I think about this every day, but it’s something I live with and that opportunity to make that connection was something I wasn’t going to miss.”

Meeting as part of Thank a Paramedic Day on Wednesday 24 July, the pair reflected on the ordeal all those years ago.

Since then, Tim completed his science degree and has followed a research career, working as a molecular microbiologist and university professor at the University of Melbourne, but his proudest achievement is getting married and having three daughters.

“That’s the biggest blessing out of all this, that’s the chance I’ve been given,“ he said.

The idea of getting in contact again came after Ian found an old letter written by Tim’s mother Jan. “It was a very moving letter, I still had a very good recollection of this job,” Mr Smith said.

“I just punched Tim’s name into the google machine and up came Tim at the top of the list.

“We look at our small role in prolonging Tim’s life but what he’s done with the rest of it and the number of people he’s helped and improved their quality of life, it’s just fantastic.”

100 years ago 7 August 1919 Discussed at Public Meeting On Monday evening a public meeting was held at the Dandenong Town Hall to discuss with the shire engineer (Mr Woodcock) suggestions for improving the approaches to the town.

The attendance numbered about one hundred.

The public meeting was called so that matters could be discussed with the ratepayers.

Mr Woodcock had prepared a scheme, which would be placed before them and the details could be discussed.

The matter of enclosing portion of a reserve, near the bridge had been considered by the council and there was also the matter of improving the Main Road, near the High School.

The engineer enumerated the proposed work as follows. South of creek between Frankston Road and Cranbourne road: 65 trees and

guards, 58 trees in the park area. West side of Dandenong between the bridge and Frankston Rd; 27 trees and Guards.

North of the town to the High School 10,400 ft. of post and rail fencing, ploughing, and planting for 420 trees.

Mr Woodcock stated that the reserve beyond the creek was to be extended and at Hemmings Lake, there were to be a couple of rustic bridges and several pathways.

50 years ago 5 August 1969 Councils’ keen for a Library Councils of Springvale, Dandenong, Berwick, and Cranbourne are keen on establishing a regional library service. Details of a conference last week of representatives of the four councils were given at Dandenong Council on Monday by Cr I Fotheringham.

Cr Fotheringham said the combined popu-

lations of the four municipalities were about 135,000 which although short of the 220,000 needed for ideal economic working, were satisfactory.

Cr Fotheringham said should the committee decide to proceed with arrangements for a regional library, funds could be allocated. He considered the amount council would have to find for its share in the undertaking would amount to 1.7% of revenue.

Simple solution on water

Disaster Aid Australia's inexpensive and simple Sky Hydrants are providing clean water in more than 200 rural schools and villages in Bhutan, India, Columbia and the Philippines.

These life-changing instruments, installed for $5000 each, remove all bacteria from 10,000 litres of water a day. That's enough to sustain a community of 700, or a school of 1000 students.

"It provides safe drinking water for less than a dollar per person per day," says DAA chief executive Brian Ashworth.

The project was shortlisted in the Energy Globe 2018 international awards. It made the top 16 out of more than 2000 entries, and was ranked as the best from Australia.

Disaster Aid Australia was formed by the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills. With two parttime staff and loyal volunteers, it delivers more than $250,000 of overseas aid, including disaster relief.

It aims to provide clean water to every major school in Bhutan by 2020. It has provided 40 Sky Hydrants to the schools - about a third of its target of 120.

Mr Ashworth, a retired water engineer and former manager at South Gippsland Water, quickly saw the utility of DAA's work.

"It's what was needed in the developing world.

"It's low cost and very easy to operate.

"Over my career I've seen high-tech solu-

tions that break down and there's no one there to fix them.

"It's no good having a high-tech plant if you need to fly in someone from Australia when something breaks."

The hydrants are eradicating common illnesses in the communities.

"That's a big thing. Because children are ill less often, their education improves.

"Because people aren't buying bottled water from the supermarket, the amount of disposable bottles disappears."

DAA is always after more volunteers and donors to help spread its good work in Timor Leste and Ghana.

His life for others

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Teaching the healthy way

National Tree Day encourages communities to help preserve the environment for future generations.

“Schools Tree Day is a great way to teach kids about caring for the environment and creating a greener future,” said Patterson Cheney Toyota Marketing Manager, Gabriela Goldfarb.

“The students are given an opportunity to plant and care for the seedlings as they grow, while also beautifying the school grounds.”

2019 is the 20th anniversary of Toyota Australia’s support for the national campaign.

Over 2,000 schools were involved last year as part of National Tree Day. “It’s inspiring to see our dealerships connecting with local communities and schools and instilling the importance of preserving the environment in our next generation,” said Toyota Australia Chief Marketing Officer, Wayne Gabriel.

We need more empathy and compassion for what students endure, says Dandenong High School PE teacher and university educator Sara Villiers.

She jumped at the chance to take part in a free public mental-health forum at Dandenong High School on 21 August.

One challenge is the information-rich world that saturates a young person's growing mind.

"Young people are taking in more information now than anyone before them," Ms Villiers says.

"They're absorbing all of that in trying to make sense of the world and who they should be."

But on the other hand, struggles are rarely shared on ever-pervasive social media platforms. We get "curated" snap-shots rather than the back stories, Ms Villiers says.

"We are only seeing the amazing things that people are doing, not the struggles.

"It sets up this expectation that we should attain this level of perfection."

Ms Villiers wants more emphasis on social and emotional wellbeing in schools - not just academic scores.

It is not just good in itself, but leads to better academic results, she argues.

"Schools are struggling to keep up with it.

Even in teachers - one in four adults will have a mental illness.

"Mental health issues are on the rise, cardio and cancer rates are on the rise - we've fallen into the trap of always needing to be busy.

"We should make space to spend time with family and friends, and doing things together."

Ms Villiers' empathy comes from hard personal experience.

At 16, she sought help for depression. And it took some time to find the right professional with the right treatment, she says.

Six years later, she had her first panic attack.

More are speaking more about mental wellbeing and illness, but still many dismiss it and are reluctant to acknowledge their struggles, Ms Villiers said.

"We need to normalise help-seeking - that's why I got into this space."

Currently on leave, Ms Villiers started her own business The Metanoia Movement. It's a resource for parents, schools and teachers to help them understand emotions.

And to "use strengths to overcome challenges," she says.

"I want teachers to work with students to find their own strategies.

"To use their strengths, which have a positive impact on their health, wellbeing and decision making."

The Mental Health Forum is held by Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong. Other speakers include Christina Molina of headspace, and psychiatrist Greg de Moore.

It is at Melaleuca Theatre, Dandenong High School, David Street, Dandenong on Wednesday 21 August, 7pm. Free entry, gold coin donations for mental health research (via Australian Rotary Health) are welcome.

Miles of smiles it’s Dental Health Week Dental Health Week, which takes place this year from 5 to 11 August, is the Australian Dental Association’s major annual oral health promotion event.

Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health by promoting these key messages: Brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride.

65% of Australians haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years.

50% of Australians brush their teeth only once-a-day.

Nearly 40% never floss or clean between their teeth.

Variety show of cultures

Noble Park Secondary College's vast diversity was celebrated at a day-and-night Customs and Culture Concert on 1 August.

Many of the 52 cultures within the student population were represented, including from China, Italy, Pakistan, New Zealand, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cook Islands, United Kingdom, Korea, India and Afghanistan.

During the day concert, students performed traditional songs and dances to local primary school pupils.

In the evening, more than 600 people watched the performance.

Among the guests were students and teachers from sister-school Shiminato Senior High School in Japan. They also performed a medley of Japanese songs.

"Guests were in awe of the performances, and the talent that was showcased throughout the concert," a college spokesperson said.

The launch of Narre Warren's highly-anticipated 1001 steps track has been controversially dumped amid concerns it would have been disrupted by anti-mosque protesters.

Casey Council cancelled the event just days after approving plans for a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North where about 50 people were locked out of the public meeting on 16 July - which was described some as "disgusting" and "manipulative".

Staunch mosque opponent councillor Rosalie Crestani said she was "a bit shocked at first" of the event being scrapped but respected council's decision as "emotions in the community were still running high."

"I can see the reason why the mayor wanted to give it some space," she said.

Cr Crestani, who spearheaded the steps project three years ago, said she believed the community "would have acted peacefully" at the launch on 20 July.

"Possibly they (council) may have thought there had been a concern but I'm only assuming," she said.

Casey manager of governance Holly De Kretser said the event was postponed due to the "heightened emotions" following the council's decision to approve plans for a mosque."We felt this would detract from the celebration of this project," she said.

Cr Crestani said the steps, based at Bayview Park, had "resonated with the community".

"Already people are saying they regularly take the steps for their exercise and they don't want to travel further afield," she said.

"This has regional impact which is I think is exciting."

The track has transformed a disused tip into a $1 million tourist attraction with sweeping views of Port Phillip and Western Port bay.

Southside’s flying start

By Nick Creely A new-look WNBL team is set to take over from the Dandenong Rangers for the upcoming season, with the ‘Southside Flyers’ announced last Wednesday as the new franchise set to join the expanding competition.

The Rangers franchise - which has been synonymous with the south-east region since its inception in 1992 - will be no more, with new owner and long-time supporter of women’s sport in Australia, Gerry Ryan electing to take the team in a new direction.

The new Southside name will aim to reflect on the commitment made by Ryan to create a team with the support of beachside suburbs of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula through to Dandenong, Gippsland and beyond.

“The Southside Flyers is a fresh start for the team with fresh faces, fresh plans and a completely new look for basketball and women’s sport," Ryan said.

"The Australian women’s basketball team is ranked number three in the world and we want to build a culture and profile for this team and the sport that reflects this world standing.

“Being a competitive team that is sustainable at the elite level is just a start.

"The Southside Flyers will be about creating mentors and role models, a team that is involved with the wider community, a team that inspires females to be involved in sport.”

The Rangers - one of the most successful domestic women’s basketball teams in Australia - will embark on this new era, while still respecting the history of the former WNBL side, with the team still set to play its home games at Dandenong Stadium.

“Our vision is to significantly broaden the support for the new team and to get the whole basketball community involved. The name Southside Flyers reflects this vision,” Ryan said.

The inaugural head coach of the Southside Flyers will be Cheryl Chambers, one of the most successful and respected coaches in Australian basketball.

The Dandenong Rangers franchise is no more after the recent announcement from Gerry Ryan. 187113 Chambers is a three-time WNBL Coach of the Year and an assistant coach of Australia’s women's national team, the Australian Opals.

“This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new basketball team, to develop a successful squad from the ground up and to work with Gerry Ryan," she said.

"This will be more than a successful basketball team, this will be about the community and women’s sport.

The Flyers have also announced that Australian and WNBL star Jenna O’Hea has already committed to the team, with the dual-WNBL

championship player a huge signing ahead of the season.

Chambers is currently in the United States with the Opals at a training camp but has already been busy developing an exciting squad for the Flyers’ inaugural season.

The playing roster will be announced when Chambers returns from the Australian Opals training camp later this week and the new uniform, with the key colours being aqua and navy, will be unveiled at an official function later this month.

Stingrays set to test themselves at AFL draft combine

By Tyler Lewis The pointy-end of the NAB League season is fast-approaching, which means the top draft prospects' athleticism and skills are soon set to be put to the test in front of AFL recruiters.

And Dandenong Stingrays Ned Cahill, Sam De Koning, Cody Weightman, Lachlan Williams and Hayden Young are among those selected to take part in the AFL Draft Combine from Vic Country.

From the 21 players invited to the combine from Vic Country, five are from the Dandenong Stingrays.

The tests that the players are put through include: the standing vertical jump, running vertical jump, agility test, 6x30-metre sprint,

20-metre yo-yo run test, two-kilometre time trial, kicking efficiency test, and goal-kicking test.

De Koning no doubt looms as a favourite for the vertical jump tests, while Young, Cahill and Williams will all feature strongly in the kicking tests.

Beaconsfield and Dandenong livewire Weightman will be looking to continue his form in front of goal from the Under-18 Nationals in the goal-kicking test, as will Williams who has hit the scoreboard more recently.

Williams looms as a bolter in the draft if he can impress in the testing, while Young is one AFL clubs will look to debut as early as possible if he demonstrates a good enough tank to run

out games. The nation already knows about that left foot of his.

As well as proving potent in the kicking tests, both Weightman and Cahill will be competitive challengers in the agility and sprint testing.

The combine often brings out the positives and negatives of a young prospect's body when approaching the draft - the time trial and kicking efficiency drill are often the headline of importance to hint how much extra training a club will have to put into a youngster post-draft.

With Marvel Stadium playing host to a UFC event in the usual time slot for the combine, the AFL is on the hunt for a venue to host the crucial tests.

Oakes’ toughness shines

By Tyler Lewis Despite going down 12.11 (83) to 8.9 (57) to South Croydon, it was still a remarkable day for Noble Park in the Eastern Football League's Premier Division on Saturday.

Nathan Oakes - who was named best on ground for the Bulls - was meant to be in the stands for another four weeks with a meniscus injury, but four weeks was enough for the young Bull as he returned as if he hadn't missed a minute. Frankston Dolphins-listed forward Ali Zijai also kicked two majors in his side's loss.

Rowville, meanwhile, finds itself clinging on to a spot in the top four after the Hawks went down 11.21 (87) to 5.5 (35) to the ladderleading Vermont.

In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, the Doveton Eagles were unable to secure third spot in their crucial clash against Murrumbeena, going down 9.12 (66) to 14.13 (97).

The Lions' elite accuracy in the opening term allowed them to run away with the victory, and both sides shared seven scoring shots in the first stanza but the Lions were able to convert all their shots to take a 20-point buffer into quarter-time.

Simon Clarke continued his good form for the Eagles, being named best afield, while stablemate Jye Sigersma (three goals) kicked his 19th major from just six games in 2019.

And Keysborough put away Chelsea

Heights with ease as they ran away 13.14 (92) to 6.6 (42) victors.

In Division 3, Hampton Park demonstrated why it's the team to beat - edging out the third placed Clayton on Saturday, 12.14 (86) to 11.14 (80).

A six-goal third term put the Redbacks back in it as they surged out to a remarkable fourwin gap from the second-placed Endeavour Hills.

Endeavour Hills, meanwhile, coasted to victory against Cerberus, 15.29 (119) to 2.6 (18).

Although not requiring the percentage boost, the Hills had the opportunity to demolish Cerberus even further but were extremely inaccurate in front of goal - kicking 4.13 (37) in the opening term to just two behinds.

And in Division 4, Hallam punished Lyndale

in a stupendous 27.14 (176) to 3.1 (19) victory.

Hallam - which sits percentage ahead of Moorabbin - piled on nine goals to none in the premiership term and didn't stop there with another seven in the final quarter. Max Little was among the best for the Pumas in the monumental loss.

In other matches, Lyndhurst put Moorabbin to the sword in its 20.9 (129) to 3.6 (24) win.

Jarryd McGrath was dominant with six majors in a best afield performance while Matt Johansson was the best for the Roos.

Carrum-Patterson Lakes had a field day against Dandenong, running riot with a 17.23 (125) to 5.4 (34) win.

With a six-goal to none opening term, the game was finished at the first interval. Aaron Wilson kicked another handful to go with his 48 this season.

Frustration sets in for the Stingrays

It is a frustrating period for the Dandenong Stingrays after they suffered yet another loss on the weekend.

But they seem to be playing strong football and developing on all counts except the ladder.

The Stingrays were edged out late in the match, 5.16 (46) to 6.5 (41), to the pole-positioned Eastern Ranges.

After kicking five behinds in the opening term, the Stingrays turned it on and didn't miss the big sticks for the remaining three quarters.

When Ned Cahill wheeled around onto his right foot and put Dandenong in front midway through the second term, the signs of improvement were starting to be converted on to the scoreboard.

Will Howe snuck out the back of the crashing pack and snapped truly to extend the margin in the third term.

But that crashing pack typified a heart-

Last to get up from the pack was top prospect Sam De Koning, who was grasping at his left ankle and forced everyone in the crowd to grit their teeth, hoping only a twist for the youngster who was invited to the National Combine during the week.

Despite brilliance from Cahill and Hayden Young in the final term, the Ranges showed why they are sitting on top of the competition - sneaking home with an important victory so close to September.
