Dog of an act By Jessica Anstice A Pakenham Upper family has been left heartbroken after their nine week old service pup was mauled by their neighbour's dog. Just four days after bringing Lexi home from the breeder, on June 13, she was attacked by another dog in her own backyard. Husband and father of two Adam Hillbrick fundraised enough money to adopt a seizure alert puppy to assist him and alert his family of oncoming seizures. Diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009 at 32, he has since suffered from tonic clonic seizures which can occur up to 13 times in 24 hours. Mr Hillbrick was playing in his backyard with Lexi moments before the attack. When he threw a ball for Lexi to chase, the neighbouring dog, which is believed to be a Husky or Alaskan Malamute, approached the fence line. Mr Hillbrick heard a yelp and witnessed the neighbour's dog's head poking through under the fence. He grabbed Lexi from the mouth of the dog and picked her up, blood dripping from her mouth and face. "Thankfully as she is a service dog in training, she is required to be with Adam 24 hours a day," Adam's wife Bianca Hillbrick said. "Had Adam not been there, Lexi would have been killed. "The attack was unprovoked and unpredictable and happened in an absolute split second." Lexi required surgery and ended up with 12 stitches to her face and inside her mouth. Ms Hillbrick said Lexi's gum was ripped from the bone and her face was severely swollen. "This was a really stressful ordeal for our family, particularly Adam and Lexi," she said. "I immediately came home from work and took Lexi to the Vet as Adam cannot drive due to his epilepsy. "Stress is a trigger for Adam's epileptic seizures so we were all waiting for the next sei-

The traumatic experience has taken a financial toll on the Hillbrick family, as it resulted in a $750 vet bill. "I had to leave work to deal with the vet and the council so I wasn't paid and we had to buy materials to lay chicken wire against the fence line to stop the dogs digging into our yard again," she said. "We no longer feel safe in our own fully fenced backyard. We can't have barbecues or just play out there with the kids and Lexi for fear it could happen again. "What if this had been our 18 month old daughter picking up a toy from the fence line?"
The nine week old service pup is still in training. Over $6000 was raised by the community last month to purchase the service pup. "Lexi came into our lives through the generosity of our community, friends and family who knew Adam's uncontrolled epilepsy meant we needed something to keep him safe and gain greater independence," Ms Hillbrick said. "We are yet to know how this will affect
Lexi's trainability as a service dog as she may be dog reactive and scared which could have catastrophic consequences for our family." In response to the attack, a Cardinia Shire Council spokesman said council adheres to a Dog Attack Policy as part of its Domestic Animal Management Plant, to ensure all Compliance Services Officers take a consistent approach when investigating dog attack offences and when referring matters to the Magistrates Court. "All complaints of dog attacks are treated with the upmost seriousness and always followed up," Cardinia Shire Council's infrastructure and environment general manager Peter Benazic said. "Before undertaking a criminal prosecution, council needs to be satisfied that there is a reasonable prospect of proving a criminal offence. Council can only apply for compensation orders (such as vet bills) if we are successful in proving the criminal offence." Mr Benazic said in a case where two dogs are involved in an incident where there is a hole in or under a fence council must be able to both prove the attacking dog bit the other dog and also disprove the bitten dog did not enter the other property, even slightly, before the attack. "In this case, no-one saw what happened before the attack and therefore council could not disprove this," he explained. "After investigation, it was determined the 15cm hole in the fence would be sufficient for the Magistrates Court to conclude that the defence is raised. "This, combined with there being no witnesses to what preceded the attack, has led to the decision that council does not have sufficient evidence to prove a criminal offence under Section 29 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994." Council has also investigated a number of barking dog complaints for this location, however on each occasion the complainant has not been able to provide the required evidence, and therefore council could not pursue the matter.

$132.4m on pokies By Brendan Rees Gamblers in Casey lost a staggering $132.4 million in the last financial year - prompting calls from critics to "outlaw the predatory and addictive features" of poker machines. Figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation show Casey took out second in the state with pokies losses - equal to $524 for every adult. Of the 13 venues in Casey the Berwick Springs Hotel ranked second in Victoria, taking $19.7 million. Hampton Park Tavern was also in the top 10 and had the largest increase in player losses, raking in $1.3 million more than the previous year. Punters also forked out $6.6 million at Amstel Golf Club; $12.9 million at Fountain Gate Taverner, and $8.2 million at Trio Sports Club in Cranbourne. Cranbourne Information and Support Ser-
vice's executive officer Leanne Petrides said gambling had devastating effects on families seeking their help. "We see a number of people attending our service for counselling and financial counselling who have lost so much due to gambling on the pokies including their relationships and, in some cases, their homes," she said. "We are also working with an increasing number of children and young people who are addicted to gaming." Casey acting director of city planning and infrastructure Duncan Turner said council been advocating for the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) for the whole municipality. "Council remains concerned about gambling losses being experienced by Casey residents, particularly given many are from vulnerable communities already experiencing relatively high levels of socio-economic disad-
vantage," Mr Turner said. "A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipalit." Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman, the Reverend Tim Costello said poker machines led to the loss of much more than money in the Casey community. "In extreme cases, poker machines cause the loss of lives due to suicide," Rev Costello said. "Then there is the loss of homes, families, relationships, jobs, cars and much more due to gambling harm." "We call on the Victorian Government to outlaw the predatory and addictive features on poker machines that trick people into believing they are winning when they are actually losing money," he said. Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rowan Wenn said the gambling industry was deliberately "set up" to take money from the vulnerable who sought an "escape" in pokies machines.
Big plans for sought after Berwick station By Brendan Rees Casey Council is calling on the State Government to deliver a new 'landmark' railway station at Berwick with a preferred 'rail under road' level crossing. It comes as works on the Clyde Road level crossing is set for removal by 2022, with a design to be announced later in the year and works beginning in 2020. At their Tuesday 16 July meeting, councillors resolved to write to the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) seeking the delivery of a new railway station regardless of the level crossing outcome. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the level crossing project presented itself as a "prime opportunity" to adequately plan and redevelop the Berwick Health and Education Precinct in partnership with the Federal and State Governments - which is set to accommodate up to 8,500 jobs, 11,300 students, 751 hospital beds and 1,000 high density dwellings under a planning scheme. Cr Stapledon said council had so far been "flexible and accommodating" with LXRP projects in Casey with the less expensive 'rail over road' solution being implemented at Evans and Thompsons Roads. "However, the level crossing at Clyde Road in Berwick is of major strategic significance and warrants a more sophisticated design solution," she said. "Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal project provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the station with a well-integrated design solution that provides improved multimodal connectivity, safety and accessibility for our local community." President of the Berwick Business Group, Tammy Lobato said their group supported council's push for a new train station, which would "benefit from increased economic activity, greater time efficiency, safer roads and
House goes up in flames Firefighters were called to a vacant house fire in Cranbourne North on Monday 29 July. The fire broke out at the single-storey weatherboard home on Endeavour Drive about 5am and crews arrived shortly after. About 15 firefighters from Cranbourne and Narre Warren brigades attended with the support of Bayswater breathing apparatus van. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. The house was destroyed except for the back end and investigators are yet to determine the cause of the fire. Cranbourne CFA station officer Ugur Ali confirmed there were no injuries and a smoke warning was issued for Cranbourne North, Lyndhurst, and Lynbrook. Police, ambulance and a power company were also called.
Masterplan given green light Casey Council has formally adopted an $11 million master-plan for the Robert Booth Reserve in Hampton Park during a council meeting on 16 July. Key projects for the reserve include improved pedestrian entrances; a new playground and picnic area; a new tennis centre at an alternative site in Hampton Park; new competition netball courts; refurbishment and extension of the sporting pavilion; new car parking, and a new fire brigade training area. A total of 35 responses from the public were received with "overwhelming support" for the masterplan who say the "outputs would enhance the reserve." Implementation will begin in the 2019-20 financial year with funding sources including Federal and State Government grants.
Teen charged with spate of burglaries and thefts Narre Warren police have arrested an 18-yearold man following a series of incidents across the south-eastern suburbs. The youth was taken into custody following an investigation into a number of alleged burglaries where cigarettes were stolen between 21 April and 27 July iin Pakenham and Narre Warren. He has been charged with six counts of burglary, 12 counts of theft, three counts of obtain property by deception, handle stolen goods, theft of motor vehicle and traffic offences. The Narre Warren man has been remanded in custody to appear in Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Change of pace for steps By Brendan Rees The launch of Narre Warren's highly-anticipated 1001 steps track has been controversially dumped amid concerns it would have been disrupted by anti-mosque protesters. Casey Council cancelled the event just days after approving plans for a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North where about 50 people were locked out of the public meeting on 16 July - which was described some as "disgusting" and "manipulative". Staunch mosque opponent councillor Rosalie Crestani said she was "a bit shocked at first" of the event being scrapped but respected council's decision as "emotions in the community were still running high." "I can see the reason why the mayor wanted to give it some space," she said. Cr Crestani, who spearheaded the steps project three years ago, said she believed the community "would have acted peacefully" at the launch on 20 July. "Possibly they (council) may have thought there had been a concern but I'm only assuming," she said. Casey manager of governance Holly De Kretser said the event was postponed due to the "heightened emotions" following the council's decision to approve plans for a mosque."We felt this would detract from the celebration of this project," she said. Cr Crestani said the steps, based at Bayview Park, had "resonated with the community". "Already people are saying they regularly take the steps for their exercise and they don't want to travel further afield," she said. "This has regional impact which is I think is exciting." The track has transformed a disused tip into a $1 million tourist attraction with sweeping views of Port Phillip and Western Port bay. While a new official opening date has not

Embattled recycling giant SKM has announced that it will immediately cease collecting recyclable materials - including those from the Casey and Cardinia regions. The Environment Protection Authority has ordered Glass Recovery Services, a separate company that is next door to SKM's Coolaroo recycling site but that is owned by the same people, to stop accepting material due to fire risk. As a result, SKM has stopped accepting materials at its recycling site next door. SKM has been contacted for comment to clarify the situation. In a media release posted to the organisation's website, EPA Resource Recovery facilities audit taskforce manager Danny Childs said the notice follows failure by the company to comply with previous EPA notices requiring it to address risks that its stockpiles posed to the community and the environment if there had been a larger fire. "The company's stockpiles are in breach of the Waste Management Policy and it cannot receive further combustible waste at the site until EPA is satisfied it has gained compliance," Mr Childs said. "A large volume of glass waste it has received at the site has been contaminated with other types of waste, such as mixed plastics and paper and has resulted in an increased fire risk within stockpiles." It follows a similar closure of SKM sites earlier this year, that saw recycling diverted to landfill for several weeks. SKM has contacted local councils which will be impacted, including the City of Casey. City of Casey manager sustainability and waste, Michael Jansen, said the council had been advised of the closure late on Thursday 25 July. As a result of the closure, Casey will send its

I would llke to record my congratulations to the City of Casey for the concept and organisation of the tree planting at Kurll park yesterday. It was wonderful to see such a turnout of local residents volunteering their services in order to plant about ten thousand trees, and to be a part of that workforce, which numbered at about five hundred, so that the digging and planting took not much more than 90 minutes. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be part of that community, as a member of the bush walking club, and to be rewarded also with free lunch provided by the Sikh and SriLankan community food trucks. Bail refused despite plea By Cam Lucadou-Wells A wife allegedly bashed and strangled by her ex-husband over a three-day period has declined to give evidence against him, a bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. She also supported the dropping of charges including assault, threat to kill and persistent breaching of a family violence intervention order, as well as her alleged perpetrator's immediate release on bail. The man has denied the allegations. Acoording to police, the man had threatened her with a knife at Dandenong Oasis swimming pool, as well as in her own home. He'd also woke her up in her own home at 1.30am - in breach of an intervention order, the court heard. On 9 June, amidst another argument, the man allegedly slapped the victim's face and dragged her around the house. He started "poking" a knife around her chest area, confiscated her phone and dragged her out to his car, the court was told. As he drove, he choked her and threatened to kill her or her family as well as to commit self-harm, police alleged. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen refused bail, despite accepting a defence lawyer's submission that there were "compelling reasons" for the man's release. "It comes down to this. I'm not comfortable in releasing you on bail. I'm not confident that the risk of you reoffending can be reduced to an acceptable level." He dismissed arguments that the prosecution case was weak. "There is a sworn statement (by the wife). It
is cogent. The allegations in it are serious. "It is in the back-drop of there being arguments over a dowry and an allegation of an assault on 11 March. "There have been further assaults, if not an escalation, by you on 7 June, 8 June, 9 June and 15 June." Mr Vandersteen rejected the two addresses suggested for bail - either in Endeavour Hills or with a sister in Western Australia - as unsuitable "in the absence of any evidence". "Even if the evidence was before the court, it does not reduce the risk of you reoffending against your ex-wife." A defence lawyer argued that the allegations relied entirely on the wife's evidence. She had since made a 'no-complaint' statement that she was yet to sign, the lawyer said. There was no corroborative evidence of injury, no CCTV or independent witnesses despite the allegations being set in "numerous public locations", the court heard. Two other witnesses also refused to give a police statement. The 30-year-old accused had no prior history, was well-educated as a maritime electrical engineer and was recently diagnosed with diabetes and depression, the court heard. Spending the past six weeks in remand, the accused sat in the dock with an interpreter. He was a vulnerable prisoner due to language barriers, the lawyer told the court. Police had opposed bail due to the man being an unacceptable risk to his ex-partner. A prosecutor conceded its case had "some evidentiary issues". The man was remanded to appear at a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 August.
First aid funds for groups A group of local men's shed volunteers will use a $1,000 CARE Grant from Stockland's Edgebrook community in Clyde to fund first aid training. Akoonah Park Men's Shed president Ken O'Keefe said the grant would be used to help members of the Berwick club learn basic lifesaving skills. "The grant will provide first aid training to selected members to ensure a safe environment and trained support in the event of an accident or illness episodes of attendees," he said. "These members can provide prompt first aid whilst waiting for emergency services attendance, to all attending members and any visitors to the shed." Along with the Akoonah Park Men's Shed, two other community groups received CARE Grants from Stockland's Edgebrook community: The Casey Warriors Rugby League Club and TRY Australia. Stockland's Selandra Rise Retirement Village also awarded CARE Grants to the Berwick Chase Primary School and Cranbourne Junior Football Club. The footage shows a car pull up at the front of the Clydevale Avenue home about 11.20am on Monday 15 July. After a few minutes, a man wearing a highvis vest walks up to the front door before pressing the intercom button. According to the home owner Gretharan Thiagarajah the two men waited in a red ute for his pregnant wife to leave the house. Another man jumped the side gate with the man in the high-vis vest following. The men, carrying backpacks, were seen walking down the side of house looking through windows.
At one stage a man in a grey hoodie is captured walking quickly while carrying a piece of timber and peering into the windows. Mr Thiagarajah, who moved into the area three years ago, said the men tried to force open the garage door which connects to the house but weren't successful. It wasn't until he was gardening a couple of days later that Mr Thiagarajah noticed the side gate latch was bent and decided to back-track his cameras. He said the men left by forcing the gate and running off after being spooked by someone possibly reading the gas and electricity metre. Nothing was stolen and police are investigating. Night of honour for selfless volunteers Community members and groups from across the City of Casey were honoured on Friday 26 July evening at the Casey Volunteer Awards Ceremony. Clive Butler was announced as the Individual Volunteer of the Year thanks to his outstanding service in Casey across the past 35 years. "I certainly did come as a surprise," he said. "If I join a club and I can help in some way well then I put my hand up." The 89-year-old has volunteered with St Andrew's Berwick Uniting Church since the late 1980's, and has also coordinated the fundraising for Transit Soup Kitchen in Narre Warren. "I have to be involved if something interests me - and that's basically what drives me," Mr Butler said. Sadia Batool Ali received a Highly Commended Award in this category for her work in the community assisting Hazara women to settle in Australia. In a first for the awards, Jessica Borstelj and Tarali Bendix were the two joint winners of the Casey Young Volunteer Award. Jessica is a horse care volunteer with the Riding for Disabled, while Tarali, at just 11 years of age, is a dedicated junior coach at Berwick Flames Basketball Club. The Casey Volunteering Pair Award was awarded to Ian and Carmel Cuthbertson, a husband and wife duo who have volunteered for many of the Westernport's coastal safety causes, from transmitting daily weather and safety information to ships at sea, to radio listening and assisting in the rescue of stranded boats. Casey Council has joined a State Government initiative that will help small businesses to thrive, and make doing business with council a lot easier. Under the Small Business Friendly Council initiative, council is a committed to creating a fair and competitive trading environment for small business. Casey council follows 12 other councils who have signed up to the charter with the Victorian Small Business Commission pledging to: Pay small businesses within 30 days Support local businesses in managing the impacts of infrastructure projects Streamline the approval process when starting a business Help set up and support local business networks Minister for Small Business Adem Somyurek said the commitment by the City of Casey to the charter is "another example of how we are working with Councils to make Victoria the best state to build and operate a small business." Teen charged Narre Warren police have arrested an 18-yearold man following a series of incidents across the south-eastern suburbs. The youth was taken into custody following an investigation into a number of alleged burglaries where cigarettes were stolen between 21 April and 27 July iin Pakenham and Narre Warren. He has been charged with six counts of burglary, 12 counts of theft, three counts of obtain property by deception, handle stolen goods, theft of motor vehicle and traffic offences. The Narre Warren man has been remanded in custody to appear in Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Head of Australian Red Cross Shops, Richard Wood says summer is typically a time when peak volumes of donations hit the shops, but there is still a need in the winter months. "Every summer holidays we enjoy a generous number of donations and the Marie Kondo effect saw many inspired to give a little more last year," he said. "As we reach winter, we are always on the lookout for more goods, and we'd encourage people to look at what they no longer need and donate it to us, especially after the end of financial year sales."

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Factoring up the arts By Brendan Rees Casey Council has its eyes on spending $29 million to expand The Factory rehearsal centre for the arts in Cranbourne East to cope with its growing numbers. Cr Wayne Smith successfully moved a motion at council's 16 July meeting for council officers to begin a $50,000 feasibility study to a develop concept plans, conduct community engagement, costings and mode of delivery for the expansion. He said the need for the expansion was "definitely there" which would include extending and improving the front entrance and western facade of the facility. The factory has been a squeeze for the more than 25 performing arts groups that use the centre. "From day one the factory was too small ... straight away we discovered through the bookings it wasn't big enough." "We want to expand it, (and) look at some other types of spaces," he said. He said catering for circus groups was also a possibility. Cr Smith said the proposed works would start at about the same time a Cranbourne East train station would be built so it will "fit in with the new environment" - which he believed may be in the next two to three years. "That area is going to redevelop fairly majorly with the train station," he said. In December 2017, the State Government said it would set aside $3 million to buy land for a Cranbourne East Railway Station with plans yet to be unveiled. Cr Smith said it was "too early" to know if the expansion would be delivered in stages.
Casey council has plans to expand The Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts. BATS Theatre Company vice-president Susan Bergman OAM said she was thrilled an expansion of the facility was being considered. "It's just another example of the City of Casey looking at these activities which I would suggest further enhance the liveability of the
city," she said. Ms Bergman, who is a long-time member of Windmill Theatre Company, said it would also mean better storage for the regular groups. "It was a real struggle years ago and I saw people come and go all the time .... whereas
now we have a much, much better more sympathetic council who have really done well," she said. Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the project would be providing the "best bang for our buck for resident's ratepayer's money."
Park races to save rare bird There's something to chirp about at Moonlit Sanctuary. The Pearcedale wildlife park has welcomed a pair of Swift Parrots in a desperate effort to save the native breed from extinction. With no more than 1000 breeding pairs left in the wild, experts say their time could be up in less than a decade. But the park has started a race to increase their numbers. "They are a very special Aussie native that deserves more attention," the park's Avian Threatened Species program coordinator Ash Herrod said.
"We are very excited to welcome two young unrelated pairs of Swift Parrots to our Sanctuary to commence a breeding program," he said. The Swift Parrot breeds only in Tasmania and migrates to south-east Australia making it the longest migrating bird in the world. They are described as "noisy, active and showy birds," reaching speeds of up to 90km per hour. The birds are currently being exhibited at Moonlit Sanctuary, 550 Tyabb-Tooradin Road, Pearcedale.

On June 22 the school celebrated with a three course dinner for 180 guests, including past and present students and their families, at
Amberlee Receptions. Narelle Gillies, Principal of South Eastern Allstars, said a lot of past students attended including some of the first students that started in 1995. "We had slides going all night with photos and footage of students over the past 25 years. It was nice to look down memory lane and see
how they've grown into adults," Narelle said. The current dance students presented a cabaret floor show to the audience, and also created a surprise video that was presented to Narelle on the night. "It made me a bit teary. It was beautiful. Sometime's you think you don't make a difference in people's lives and then you see that,
it's great to see," Narelle said. Narelle said the majority of the students she has taught over the 25 years agree she gave them their love for 80s music. "We all danced the night away after we cut the cake. It was a beautiful night and quite humbling, actually".

ATO says Lego among ‘dodgy’ claims not allowed The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has published some of the most unusual claims that they disallowed last financial year. Nearly 700,000 taxpayers claimed almost $2 billion of ‘other’ expenses including non-allowable items such as dental costs, child care, and even Lego sets. Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said that a systematic review of claims had found, and disallowed, some very unusual expenses. “These claims add up to a lot of money. If the deduction isn’t directly related to earning income, we can’t allow it.” “A couple of taxpayers claimed dental expenses, believing a nice smile was essential to
finding a job – and was therefore deductible. It isn’t and their claims were disallowed.” “Another taxpayer claimed the Lego sets they bought as gifts for their children. Unsurprisingly, this claim was disallowed. Personal gifts don’t qualify, and it’s not okay to ask Australian taxpayers to subsidise presents.” ‘Other’ deductions section of the tax return is for expenses incurred in earning income that don’t appear elsewhere on the return – such as income protection and sickness insurance premiums. However, the ATO review found that some taxpayers were incorrectly claiming a range of private expenses such as child support payments, private school fees, health insurance costs and medical expenses,
all of which are not allowable. “Where people make genuine mistakes, we simply disallow the claim. Warriors’ mixed fortunes By Tyler Lewis The Pakenham Warriors Division 2 Men’s side went down in a battle for fourth position to the Craigieburn Eagles, 83-94, in Big V basketball action on Sunday. After beating the third-placed Camberwell by eight points on Saturday, 69-61, the Warriors got great purchase from all players the next day with four of their starters scoring over 10 points. But on the defensive end Pakenham was unable to stop Eagle Damon Smith, who had a field day on the floor - recording 45 points and 18 rebounds. The Division 2 Women, meanwhile, pulled apart Coburg in an imposing 107-64 victory.
Everyone on the Warriors’ roster scored but it was Jacinta Maxwell who dominated with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting at an efficient 57 per cent from the field. The Warriors will go into their first playoff game this weekend against the Mornington Breakers. Pakenham’s Youth League Men’s side registered a strong victory over Keysborough, 10975. The Warriors were just more influential all over the court with six players putting up double-figure points. Josh Norton recorded a double-double with 15-points and 10 rebounds in his side’s impressive win, while Ben Tomkins provided resistance for the Cougars with 19 points

Pakenham United has launched its very own ‘Soccer Mums’ initiative, aimed specifically for women to meet new people, have fun and learn basic football skills. An initiative of VicHealth, Soccer Mums is a program in the Active Women and Girls for Health and Well-Being funding stream that is presented across Victoria by Football Victoria. United hosted a free ‘Come and Try’ day on Tuesday 23 July at IYU Recreation Reserve. About a dozen women showed their support in the pouring rain, as well as a project manager from Football Victoria. More than a dozen women have currently enrolled for the program, which runs over five Tuesdays. Kat Carmody is the current ladies coach at United and the female participation coordinator. She said it is an exciting program designed to encourage mums to come along to give it a go in a friendly environment. “The program caters for about 20 people per session, but it’s open to anyone, members of the club, and members of the local community, as well as friends and family of anyone in the south east area,” she said. Kat - who has played soccer for over a de-
cade - has found a home at United, and hopes other ladies can jump on board and join the club into the future. She said the growth in female participation since joining the club has grown substantially. “I’ve played for over 10 years at various different levels, and I moved to the area and found a club to play for, and I joined this club at the end of my street, and we started with a seven-a-side team, and then progressed to an 11-a-side team,” she said. “I then went on to have my baby this year, and took the season off to have my little girl and decided to take on the coaching role.” She hopes that busy mums - who are perhaps looking for a way to engage with the community and focus on their mental and physical wellbeing - will benefit from the program. “This program’s aimed at mums in particular that don’t have the time to commit to a full season, and training twice a week,” she said. “So it’s looking at providing opportunities for mums to participate in some social networking and fitness.” For more information on the VicHealth initiative - which seems to be growing each day - visit soccermums.com.au pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 13 On the surface, a 34-point win doesn’t appear to be anything special. But it was the manner in which Berwick knocked over the in-form Beaconsfield that was just so impressive. Whether it’s with their backs against the wall, in the driving rain, or with sunny and dry conditions, the Wickers just always have that extra gear to their game. Despite appearing to have settled the quicker of the two sides down at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday, Leigh McQuillen’s Eagles got the early break after a cracking goal in traffic from Kyle O’Sullivan saw the visitors push in front and take in a six-point lead at quarter time. Even though Ash Smith’s drive was providing a headache, and the likes of Jo West, Harry Money and Jesse Cirulis started strong, the visitors’ miserly defence was on top. Early in the second quarter, the Eagles managed to extend their margin to two-goals, before a piece of magic from one of the competition’s superstars got the home side up and about. Travis Tuck - who had a quiet start to the game - snapped the ball in heavy traffic from almost the paint of 50, kick starting a blistering run from the champs that saw them take control and punish the Eagles on turnover. When Harry Money calmly slotted his third goal midway through the second term to drag the lead out to 18 points, the Wickers had quickly wrestled back control with five unanswered goals in a matter of 15 minutes. Running out 11.8 (74) to 5.10 (40) winners in what was a lacklustre final term, the Wickers fired a warning shot for all opposition clubs to be wary of. Nick Hillard was simply sublime for the Wickers in a class display, Luke JellymanTurner’s run off half-back was electric, while Harry Money’s class and goal sense was on display once more with another three majors to take his tally to 46 for the year. Youngster Nick Green - playing just his third senior game - was very impressive, and kicked a nice goal. Wandin’s tremendous turnaround in 2019 also continued on Saturday against Cranbourne, surging into the top five and displacing the Eagles from fifth spot as a result. The Dogs and Eagles fought out a fascinating battle at The Kennel, with the home side holding on in a tense final term, 12.20 (92) to 13.11 (89). In particular, the Dogs surged ahead with an excellent final half, motoring back from 20 points down at the major break to wrestle back momentum thereafter. Once again, Rohan Heasley was crucial for the home side, while Michael Fowkes, Mark Sandfort and David Barton were all named in the best. For the Eagles - who continue to battle its own injury concerns - defender Jordan Bertrand was super, while Shaun Marusic’s strong form in the middle continued with another strong game. The crucial result means that the Dogs move into fifth spot on 28 points, with the Eagles sitting just behind on 26 points as the race for the remaining finals position continues. The Dogs in particular have been completely dominant on its home deck in 2019, and will fancy their chances when they welcome Narre Warren on Saturday, and with a comfortable run home - including clashes against Upwey Tecoma, Healesville and Olinda Ferny Creek will be hard to remove from fifth. Narre Warren, meanwhile, picked up an expected win against Healesville at home, registering a whopping 53 scoring shots, 31.22 (208) to 8.6 (54). With Michael Collins’ purple-patch up forward continuing with another six majors, and Daniel Jackson also snaring half a dozen, the Magpies were never challenged after opening up a 45-point lead at quarter time. In the remaining match of the round, Woori Yallock, fought off a fierce challenge from Olinda Ferny Creek to bank a 22-point win, 12.12 (84) to 9.8 (62). The loss in particular makes the Bloods’ finals hopes even more difficult, now sitting two games behind the Dogs in fifth. making the trip to take on Wandin at the Kennel this Saturday- a crucial match in the context of the season. In Division 1, Pakenham coach Ash Green admitted that it was extremely difficult for his side to go out and play football on the weekend against Belgrave. With Pakenham head trainer and hugely popular figure Neil Poulton’s sudden passing last week, Green said the last thing on his club’s mind on the weekend was going out and playing for four points. “It’s been a tough week - being a young team, it’s impacted them a lot, and all the players to be honest,” he said. “It was really hard; the boys were really flat in the first half. I pushed them pretty hard to just get them out of that mindset.” Green said that football took a backwards step through the week in order to come to terms with the tragedy, and that it was obvious that from the outset that his group struggled to get their mind on the game. “It was our mindset, we missed a lot of tackles early, even the voice and encouragement wasn’t there - we didn’t talk much about Neil in the pre-game, but we spoke about it all a lot on Thursday, and it impacted our preparation a bit,” he said. “We didn’t prepare really on a football sense this week, it was more making sure the kids were right - footy took a backwards step, but we had a game to play, and we got better in the second half. “But the bye’s come at a good time - we would have struggled again mentally if we were playing this week.” The Lions’ football and netball clubs - along with Belgrave - shared a minute silence prior to the game on Saturday to pay tribute to a man who meant a lot to the community, before Green’s second-placed group got the job done comfortably despite some wayward kicking at goal, 16.24 (120) to 3.4 (22). The returning Dermott Yawney proved a handle for the Magpies, while debutant Thomas Gamble kicked three in an impressive performance. “I’m proud of the guys, they worked really hard, and Belgrave didn’t make it easy for us,” he said of the game. “We hit the post five times in the first half, and when you kick more points than behinds, it does build a bit of pressure. “It’s been an emotional week, and I’m proud that the boys got away with a win - we certainly sang the song with plenty of gusto after the game in a bit of tribute to Neil as well.” In the remaining match of the AFL Outer East Division 1 round, a wayward Monbulk did what they needed to against Warburton Millgrove at home to keep its distance from Pakenham at the top, 11.22 (88) to 5.2 (32).
