Preps turn back the clock! Hair curlers, grey hair, pearl necklaces, cardigans and glasses were part of the attire for many preps at Tooradin Primary School on Friday 26 July. To celebrate their first 100 days at school, the students dressed up as their 100-year-old self. Prep coordinator Lauren Skitt said students participated in activities including counting, reading, writing and craft, all based around the number 100. "All students were incredibly excited to celebrate this day, as it is a huge milestone in their schooling," she said.

$132.4m losses Gamblers in Casey lost a staggering $132.4 million in the last financial year - prompting calls from critics to "outlaw the predatory and addictive features" of poker machines. Figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation show Casey took out second in the state with pokies losses - equal to $524 for every adult. Of the 13 venues in Casey the Berwick Springs Hotel ranked second in Victoria, taking $19.7 million. Hampton Park Tavern was also in the top 10 and had the largest increase in player losses, raking in $1.3 million more than the previous year.

Punters also forked out $6.6 million at Amstel Golf Club; $12.9 million at Fountain Gate Taverner, and $8.2 million at Trio Sports Club in Cranbourne. Cranbourne Information and Support Service's executive officer Leanne Petrides said gambling had devastating effects on families seeking their help. "We see a number of people attending our service for counselling and financial counselling who have lost so much due to gambling on the pokies including their relationships and, in some cases, their homes," she said. "We are also working with an increasing number of children and young people who are addicted to gaming."
Casey acting director of city planning and infrastructure Duncan Turner said council been advocating for the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) for the whole municipality. "Council remains concerned about gambling losses being experienced by Casey residents, particularly given many are from vulnerable communities already experiencing relatively high levels of socio-economic disadvantage," Mr Turner said. "A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipalit." Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rowan Wenn said the gambling industry was deliberately "set up" to take money from the vulnerable who sought an "escape" in pokies machines.

Thieves’ $100k haul By Brendan Rees A Pearcedale woman and her family have been left devastated following a shocking burglary of more than $100,000 including sentimental jewellery and a car. Karen and her husband were in Broome when intruders jemmied one of the front windows of their Pearcedale Road home during the early hours of Saturday 20 July. A diamond engagement ring worth $6,000, and a wedding ring, as well as Karen's grandmother's wedding ring were taken from their bedroom. The couple's four-wheel-drive, a 2008 Toyota Landcruiser worth $50,000 was also stolen. Karen said she was alerted to the break-in about 3.45am when a security company called saying their garage alarms had gone off. "We had to ring our sons and they raced around there quickly," she said. According to Karen, the alarms scared off the intruders who dropped a make-up bag full of keys in the shed. "They've dropped the bag of keys to our keys, all our trucks, and excavator ... the front door and back door," she said. After cancelling the rest of their trip, Karen said they came home to find "stuff scattered everywhere," and have since changed their locks.
"That got all the clothes out of our wardrobes, and they up-ended some of the files in the filing cabinet," she said. "The only room they didn't go into was our grandkids' bedroom but everywhere else they'd gone through." A Go Pro, a drone, a nine-carat gold charm bracelet, cash, tools, an iPad, laptop, iPhone, Samsung TV, chainsaw, and two mini-motorbikes were among the items taken in the raid. The intruders even took their Dyson vacuum cleaner, which was only a year old. "I actually think it could've been a lot worse," Karen said, explaining the intruders "seem to have taken care with some things." "When they've taken some of the clothes off the shelf in the bedroom they've actually put them on the floor in piles." "They didn't touch the kids' piggy banks," she said, despite money "sticking out of them." While in Broome, Karen's son made a video call to her, showing her the trail of mess left behind so "we knew what to expect when we got home." The stolen white Landcruiser has a canopy, with registration WHC 994. An Engel fridge was also in the back at the time of the theft. Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit is investigating.
Firefighters were called to a vacant house fire in Cranbourne North on Monday 29 July. The fire broke out at the single-storey weatherboard home on Endeavour Drive about 5am and crews arrived shortly after. About 15 firefighters from Cranbourne and Narre Warren brigades attended with the support of Bayswater breathing apparatus van. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. The house was destroyed except for the back end and investigators are yet to determine the cause of the fire. Cranbourne CFA station officer Ugur Ali confirmed there were no injuries and a smoke warning was issued for Cranbourne North, Lyndhurst, and Lynbrook. Police, ambulance and a power company were also called.

Casey Council has formally adopted an $11 million master-plan for the Robert Booth Reserve in Hampton Park during a council meeting on 16 July. Key projects for the reserve include improved pedestrian entrances; a new playground and picnic area; a new tennis centre at an alternative site in Hampton Park; new competition netball courts; refurbishment and extension of the sporting pavilion; new car parking, and a new fire brigade training area. A total of 35 responses from the public were received with "overwhelming support" for the masterplan who say the "outputs would enhance the reserve." Implementation will begin in the 2019-20 financial year with funding sources including Federal and State Government grants.

Selfless volunteers honoured by Casey Community members and groups from across the City of Casey were honoured on Friday 26 July evening at the Casey Volunteer Awards Ceremony. Clive Butler was announced as the Individual Volunteer of the Year thanks to his outstanding service in Casey across the past 35 years. "I certainly did come as a surprise," he said. "If I join a club and I can help in some way well then I put my hand up." The 89-year-old has volunteered with St Andrew's Berwick Uniting Church since the late 1980's, and has also coordinated the fundraising for Transit Soup Kitchen in Narre Warren. "I have to be involved if something interests me - and that's basically what drives me," Mr Butler said. Sadia Batool Ali received a Highly Commended Award in this category for her work in the community assisting Hazara women to settle in Australia. In a first for the awards, Jessica Borstelj and Tarali Bendix were the two joint winners of the Casey Young Volunteer Award. Jessica is a horse care volunteer with the Riding for Disabled, while Tarali, at just 11 years of age, is a dedicated junior coach at Berwick Flames Basketball Club. The Casey Volunteering Pair Award was awarded to Ian and Carmel Cuthbertson, a husband and wife duo who have volunteered for many of the Westernport's coastal safety causes, from transmitting daily weather and safety information to ships at sea, to radio lis-

Teen charged with spate of burglaries and thefts Narre Warren police have arrested an 18-yearold man following a series of incidents across the south-eastern suburbs. The youth was taken into custody following an investigation into a number of alleged burglaries where cigarettes were stolen between 21 April and 27 July iin Pakenham and Narre Warren. He has been charged with six counts of burglary, 12 counts of theft, three counts of obtain property by deception, handle stolen goods, theft of motor vehicle and traffic offences. The Narre Warren man has been remanded in custody to appear in Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Community Centre in Cranbourne North you may have seen Hughie; the centre’s resident Labrador and he is 22 months old. Hughie belongs to the centre’s CEO Jan Gilchrist and attends the centre most days. Hughie loves the activity, people, pats and food (including fruit) and enjoys chewing on squeaky toys. He is very loved and is great therapy for all who attend, particularly the new Australians who might not have had any contact with dogs. Hughie joined the mayor on the inaugural “Walk and Talk with the Mayor” and attends all meetings with Jan, laying by her feet or under the table, he also attends the centre’s AGM’s and presentation nights. Hughie was born Hubertus; trained to be a guide dog but unfortunately did not pass his assessment due to having sensitive paws,
which meant that he could not walk on certain types of surfaces so he couldn’t guide a blind person. Jan purchased him from Guide Dogs Victoria and he is now the mascot/therapy dog for Merinda Park; his community home. Hughie lives by the water and loves to run on the beach and go for a swim in the sea. Good dog Hughie! Change of pace for steps By Brendan Rees The launch of Narre Warren's highly-anticipated 1001 steps track has been controversially dumped amid concerns it would have been disrupted by anti-mosque protesters. Casey Council cancelled the event just days after approving plans for a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North where about 50 people were locked out of the public meeting on 16 July - which was described some as "disgusting" and "manipulative". Staunch mosque opponent councillor Rosalie Crestani said she was "a bit shocked at first" of the event being scrapped but respected council's decision as "emotions in the community were still running high." "I can see the reason why the mayor wanted to give it some space," she said. Cr Crestani, who spearheaded the steps project three years ago, said she believed the community "would have acted peacefully" at the launch on 20 July. "Possibly they (council) may have thought there had been a concern but I'm only assuming," she said. Casey manager of governance Holly De Kretser said the event was postponed due to the "heightened emotions" following the council's decision to approve plans for a mosque."We felt this would detract from the celebration of this project," she said. Cr Crestani said the steps, based at Bayview Park, had "resonated with the community". "Already people are saying they regularly take the steps for their exercise and they don't want to travel further afield," she said. "This has regional impact which is I think is exciting." The track has transformed a disused tip into a $1 million tourist attraction with sweeping views of Port Phillip and Western Port bay. While a new official opening date has not

Community tree planting success

I would llke to record my congratulations to the City of Casey for the concept and organisation of the tree planting at Kurll park yesterday. It was wonderful to see such a turnout of local residents volunteering their services in order to plant about ten thousand trees, and to be a part of that workforce, which numbered at about five hundred, so that the digging and planting took not much more than 90 minutes. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be part of that community, as a member of the bush walking club, and to be rewarded also with free lunch provided by the Sikh and SriLankan community food trucks. Cranbourne-based cheerleading and dance school, South Eastern Allstars, celebrated their 25th birthday last month. On June 22 the school celebrated with a three course dinner for 180 guests, including past and present students and their families, at Amberlee Receptions. Narelle Gillies, Principal of South Eastern Allstars, said a lot of past students attended including some of the first students that started in 1995. "We had slides going all night with photos and footage of students over the past 25 years. It was nice to look down memory lane and see how they've grown into adults," Narelle said. The current dance students presented a cabaret floor show to the audience, and also created a surprise video that was presented to Narelle on the night. "It made me a bit teary. It was beautiful. Sometime's you think you don't make a difference in people's lives and then you see that, it's great to see," Narelle said. Narelle said the majority of the students she has taught over the 25 years agree she gave them their love for 80s music. "We all danced the night away after we cut the cake. It was a beautiful night and quite humbling, actually".

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Friday 26 July, a story was shared to the Cranbourne and Berwick Star News Facebook pages about the closure of SKM's Coolaroo recycling plant, meaning recycling from the City of Casey will be temporarily sent to landfill. We asked our readers what they were doing to combat the recycling crisis. Here's how they responded: Jennie Range: I hope that Casey council change the charge their bringing in for keeping our second recycle bin if it's all going to landfill now. We shouldn't have to pay for the recycling if it's not being recycled. They should've implemented things 20-30 yrs or more ago when they first brought recycle bins in instead of passing the buck and we wouldn't have this problem now. SKM ceases collections By Danielle Kutchel Embattled recycling giant SKM has announced that it will immediately cease collecting recyclable materials - including those from the Casey and Cardinia regions. The Environment Protection Authority has ordered Glass Recovery Services, a separate company that is next door to SKM's Coolaroo recycling site but that is owned by the same people, to stop accepting material due to fire risk. As a result, SKM has stopped accepting materials at its recycling site next door. SKM has been contacted for comment to clarify the situation. In a media release posted to the organisation's website, EPA Resource Recovery facilities audit taskforce manager Danny Childs said the notice follows failure by the company to comply with previous EPA notices requiring it to address risks that its stockpiles posed to the community and the environment if there had been a larger fire. "The company's stockpiles are in breach of the Waste Management Policy and it cannot receive further combustible waste at the site until EPA is satisfied it has gained compliance," Mr Childs said. "A large volume of glass waste it has received at the site has been contaminated with other types of waste, such as mixed plastics and paper and has resulted in an increased fire risk within stockpiles." It follows a similar closure of SKM sites earlier this year, that saw recycling diverted to landfill for several weeks. SKM has contacted local councils which will be impacted, including the City of Casey. City of Casey manager sustainability and waste, Michael Jansen, said the council had been advised of the closure late on Thursday 25 July. As a result of the closure, Casey will send its

"Sending recyclable material to landfill always remains a last resort, however there is limited spare capacity in the Victorian recycling industry," he said. alternative becomes available. "We are advised by SKM that this disruption is temporary. The collection of household recycling bins will continue as normal during this time." He said that Casey was working with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group and other affected councils to develop other solutions, both short and long term, to
manage the city's recycling. "Residents can assist by reducing their waste and continuing to place the correct items in each bin. Residents can also assist by squashing, squeezing and flattening their recycling so more fits into the bin, and only put the recycling bin out for collection once it is full. If the matter is resolved quickly this will mean their recyclables may still be recovered at the next collection," Mr Jansen said.

During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

After suffering a spinal injury in a 2014 accident, Joel Sardi was left a quadriplegic. The 28-year-old's life changed forever. He was a promising footballer, had served with the Australian Army, and loved to run, swim, ride, and go to the gym. Today he has a new lease on life with the help of an assistance dog named Quartz thanks to the Casey community. Hundreds turned out for the annual 'Walk to remember' at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens in February where $35,000 was raised through the Jared Dunscombe Fund in order for Righteous Pups Australia to train Quartz. A graduation ceremony was held on July 14 after Quartz, Joel and his wife Elisa completed
an intensive two week training course. Quartz has been specifically trained to assist Joel with dressing, fetching a blanket, emergency alert bark, retrieve his mobile phone and more. The impact Quartz has had on Joel's day-today life has been immediate. "I am forever grateful for what the Jared Dunscombe Fund has done for myself and Elisa" Joel said. Having Quartz "is something beyond my wildest dreams, he said. "It has changed our lives immensely already and will continue to do so forever." The annual walk is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Casey Council has its eyes on spending $29 million to expand The Factory rehearsal centre for the arts in Cranbourne East to cope with its growing numbers. Cr Wayne Smith successfully moved a motion at council's 16 July meeting for council officers to begin a $50,000 feasibility study to a develop concept plans, conduct community engagement, costings and mode of delivery for the expansion. He said the need for the expansion was "definitely there" which would include extending and improving the front entrance and western facade of the facility. The factory has been a squeeze for the more than 25 performing arts groups that use the centre. "From day one the factory was too small ... straight away we discovered through the bookings it wasn't big enough." "We want to expand it, (and) look at some other types of spaces," he said. He said catering for circus groups was also a possibility. Cr Smith said the proposed works would start at about the same time a Cranbourne East train station would be built so it will "fit in with the new environment" - which he believed may be in the next two to three years. "That area is going to redevelop fairly majorly with the train station," he said. In December 2017, the State Government

Casey council has plans to expand The Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts. said it would set aside $3 million to buy land for a Cranbourne East Railway Station with plans yet to be unveiled. Cr Smith said it was "too early" to know if the expansion would be delivered in stages. BATS Theatre Company vice-president Susan Bergman OAM said she was thrilled an expansion of the facility was being considered. "It's just another example of the City of Casey looking at these activities which I would suggest further enhance the liveability of the city," she said.
Ms Bergman, who is a long-time member of Windmill Theatre Company, said it would also mean better storage for the regular groups. "It was a real struggle years ago and I saw people come and go all the time .... whereas now we have a much, much better more sympathetic council who have really done well," she said. Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the project would be providing the "best bang for our buck for resident's ratepayer's money."

Back yard intruders caught on cam Would-be brazen intruders have been caught on a home surveillance camera in Clyde North. The footage shows a car pull up at the front of the Clydevale Avenue home about 11.20am on Monday 15 July. After a few minutes, a man wearing a highvis vest walks up to the front door before pressing the intercom button. According to the home owner Gretharan Thiagarajah the two men waited in a red ute for his pregnant wife to leave the house. Another man jumped the side gate with the man in the high-vis vest following. The men, carrying backpacks, were seen walking down the side of house looking through windows. At one stage a man in a grey hoodie is captured walking quickly while carrying a piece of timber and peering into the windows. Mr Thiagarajah, who moved into the area three years ago, said the men tried to force open the garage door which connects to the house but weren't successful. It wasn't until he was gardening a couple of days later that Mr Thiagarajah noticed the side

The Cranbourne Lions Club is ready for the new year, with young gun Alisha Austin at the helm. Ms Austin was installed as the new president of the club in a changeover luncheon on Sunday July 14. She is now the youngest president ever in the club's almost 50-year history. Around 60 people attended the event to welcome the new leader and board. They also witnessed Lion Ron Vosper receive the Lion of the Year award. Ms Austin is ready to inject new ideas into the club and says there is plenty to look forward to over the next 12 months. "We're looking at starting a Leos Club for youth between 18 and 30 years old, to get the young people of the community involved," she explains. Park races to save rare native bird There's something to chirp about at Moonlit Sanctuary. The Pearcedale wildlife park has welcomed a pair of Swift Parrots in a desperate effort to save the native breed from extinction. With no more than 1000 breeding pairs left in the wild, experts say their time could be up in less than a decade. But the park has started a race to increase their numbers. "They are a very special Aussie native that deserves more attention," the park's Avian Threatened Species program coordinator Ash Herrod said. "We are very excited to welcome two young unrelated pairs of Swift Parrots to our Sanctuary to commence a breeding program," he said. The Swift Parrot breeds only in Tasmania and migrates to south-east Australia making it the longest migrating bird in the world. They are described as "noisy, active and showy birds," reaching speeds of up to 90km per hour. The birds are currently being exhibited at Moonlit Sanctuary, 550 Tyabb-Tooradin Road, Pearcedale.
‘Doughraiser’ for school Domino's Marriott Waters is holding a 'Doughraiser' next week in support of the St Francis De Sales Primary School in Lynbrook. Every day between 5 and 11 August, one dollar from every pizza sold will be donated to the school to help raise funds for much-needed learning resources. Local Franchisee Bruntha Gobinath said the team is looking forward to firing up the ovens next week to help out the local community. "I'm really proud to help raise funds for the local school, as the resources will make a huge difference to the kids," Bruntha said. Talent shines at Shepley By Tyler Lewis It was an AFL talent scout’s paradise at Shepley Oval on Saturday as the prospects came to play. The Vic Country and Combine squads in 2019 have been riddled with Gippsland Power and Dandenong Stingrays players. When the fixture arose for the sides to meet this late in the season, it threatened to be a draft-shaping contest. And it didn’t disappoint. The day started horrifically for the Stingrays with Sam De Koning a late exclusion prematch and Bailey Schmidt going down with a match ending injury inside the opening minutes of the first term. Losing Schmidt early meant that Bigoa Nyuon had to spend more time in the ruck than usual and the dynamic tall thrived on the opportunity to get around the ball more. But the Gippsland engine room, led by Sam Flanders, went to work on the inside and when tested the respective stars stood out. Josh Smith proved to be a handful with the exclusion of De Koning as he was ominous every time the long ball entered his forward 50, snapping a marvellous goal to extend the margin to two goals at the first break. After a sluggish opening term where players were losing their feet at almost every turn, the Stingrays converted the opening major of the second quarter from a threading drop punt by Will Bravo from deep in the pocket. Bravo who was tight on the boundary went with the drop punt and kept the umpire stationary as he snuck the ball through the smallest of gaps to get his side within a kick. Despite Hayden Young’s ridiculous second term - where the elegant left-footer brought his own football - Gippsland converted five majors late in the quarter and opened the game up at half-time to what ended up being a match winning margin. Trailing by 33-points at the main break, Dandenong wasn’t going to roll over. The Stingrays lifted immensely through Ned Cahill adding a spark in the midfield and Young improving the entries inside 50 across half-forward. Dandenong was in control of the match and was threating to get back into the contest, but through terrible efficiency the Rays kept themselves out of it. After four behinds in a row, Young strolled in and converted a stylish running goal, but it was his side’s only major for the term as they kicked 1.9 while the Power only registered three points. With the Power holding a handy 21-point buffer at the final interval it was all to play for in the last term. But when Mason McGarrity snatched the ball from the pack and tumbled the ball towards goal, it pushed the lead to 27 points and made it extremely hard for Dandenong to snap its losing streak. Bravo hit back with an amazingly similar goal from his first goal in the second but the margin was too much.

Flanders is touted to be selected in the top ten of November’s national draft and his game impressed Gippsland coach Rhett McLennan, along with the rest of his side. “I thought Sam Flanders’ game was really good again,” he said. “Some explosive stuff, he got caught a bit but some moments there he looked to do some sensational things. “He had a consistent output so I was really pleased for Sam. “We are really happy with the performance; all in all I thought we had winners across the board so it was really pleasing to put in a performance like that. “We have two weeks off and then prepare the guys for our final game and then finals.” Dandenong went into the game with a wounded line-up, losing two players before the bounce and another two with seasonending injuries within the match, which made Stingrays coach Nick Cox make some changes on the spot. “We lost Jai Nancaswen before the game as well, we had to change some things around and some players came in really late - calling
kids at 9 in the morning saying ‘you’re in’ was not great for us,” Cox said. “Sam had a virus, Jai had a shoulder from the game against Box Hill, Bailey dislocated his shoulder and Max Gregory in the third quarter broke his collarbone in two places as well. “At the same time it gave some opportunity. “Credit to the boys, they put up a pretty good fight against quality opposition for most of the day. “The scoreboard didn’t really indicate how I thought we went.” The Stingrays were controlling the term in the third quarter, a passage of play that Cox wasn’t impressed with. “The amount of time we had the ball inside 50, the most important thing is scoreboard pressure and we just didn’t put it on them,” he said “We had some really easy shots and that’s something we spoke about. “At the end of the day, good players don’t miss from 30 out directly in front.” Young was named best afield for Dandenong in another stand out performance, and Cox knows all too well how good he is becoming. “There is no doubt that over the last couple of weeks that Hayden Young has enhanced his reputation as being a top five draft pick,” he said.

But it was the kid and the captain who climbed the Demons back into the contest not only keeping their side’s season alive but also showing ominous signs for the future. Youngster Kyle Dunkley and Mitch White were herculean in the resuscitation of Casey in the third term. An inspiring win by Casey started in the worst possible fashion; 30 seconds in, Sam Weideman collided with team mate Declan Kielty and was ruled out with concussion. Sam Radford was incredibly pleased with his side’s fight and resilience to get over the line, especially Dunkley and White in the third term. “I think both didn’t have a great start a bit like the team,” he said. “But in the third they were both absolutely awesome - Kyle through the midfield and going forward he was running really hard and Mitch White was super. “He (White) could’ve kicked four or five and he lead from the front.” Jimmy Munro went to four-time Trevor Barker Medalist Jack Steven and despite Stevens’s strong number, Munro limited his impact from quarter time onwards.
“Jimmy did really well on an absolute quality AFL player,” Radford said. “Jack finished with 20 touches and two goals but Jimmy finished with 30 touches and eight clearances for us. “He was influential and did a great job for the team - Jack was outstanding for the first quarter and then Jimmy was able to limit his effect.” The Demons go into the final three games needing to win all three to secure September action, but this week they face the in-form Tigers at Punt Road, and Radford is hopeful the come from behind victory can build some confidence in the group. “Hopefully they take a bit of confidence knowing things weren’t going well but hopefully it gives them a bit of confidence that when we do get it right, we can be pretty impressive,” he said. MORNINGTON PENINSULA DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 Devon Meadows has fallen back to earth after its back-two-back victories, going down to Tyabb, 9.10 (64) to 6.12 (48). Harris Elkasovic was named best afield for the Panthers in his first game in over a month of football, while Simon Rahilly was the best for the Yabbies. The win puts the Panthers and Yabbies on equal points on the home run with Devon leading the way on percentage. Pearcedale, meanwhile, suffered another heavy defeat, this time to neighbouring rival Somerville, 19.14 (128) to 8.8 (56). The Dales were competitive in every term but just didn’t have the firepower to keep up with the Eagles who are pushing for September action. Shannon Reed was among the best for the Dales with his four majors for the afternoon while Paul Fermanis (six goals) and Daniel Marshall (five goals) were prolific again up forward. SOUTHERN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 15 Keysborough stayed in touch with top spot with its 15.15 (105) to 6.5 (41) win over East Brighton on Saturday. Keysborough’s five unanswered goals in the final term secured its important victory. Chris Bryan maintained his goal kicking custom with six majors while Marcus Lavender was named best for the Vampires. The Doveton Eagles enjoyed a handy week off close to finals after its Good Friday clash with Springvale Districts rolled over into Round 15. DIVISION 3 The ladder-leading Hampton Park embar-

The Frankston Dolphins, meanwhile, dismantled Dandenong, 22.18 (150) to 7.5 (47). The Dolphins led at every change and coasted home off the back of an impressive team display. The victory now keeps the Dolphins in touch with the ladder-leading Lyndhurst and keeps the Redlegs searching for their second win of 2019. Moorabbin sustained the pressure in its shootout against Lyndale, winning 19.7 (121) to 14.8 (92). The Kangaroos led by four points at the final change but stormed home with six goals to two in the final term. Dylan Bone was named best afield for Lyndale with his six majors, while Matt Johansson was also named best for the Kangaroos for his six-goal effort. And Hallam secured a monumental come from behind win against Carrum-Patterson Lakes. The Hawks trailed at every interval of the match except the most important one, kicking three goals to one in the final term - coming home 10.14 (74) to 10.9 (69) victors. VFLW ROUND 12 Casey’s finals hopes took a big hit in its 5.14 (44) to 2.3 (15) loss to the Southern Saints on Sunday. The Saints were wasteful in front of goal but proved why they are sitting pretty in second position on the ladder in a solid display. Shelley Heath and Harriet Cordner were named in the best for the Demons, while Katherine Smith kicked a goal and didn’t stop trying.
Talented Cranbourne North basketballer Alannah Gillespie has earned a spot in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) under-18 team and will now vie for the Australian title. The 16-year-old, who plays for the Nunawading Spectres, will take part in the School Sport Australia Championships in Bendigo from 10-16 August. She participated in a structured trial process to be selected to represent the SSV State Team. The Rowville Sports Academy student has been playing basketball since the age of nine and her parents Raymond and Jean congratulated Alannah for "all her hard work."
"Special thanks to her coach Ivan Dukanac for working with her and pushing her to aim high," they said. "We wish Alannah good luck at the championship." Alannah trains daily - a combination of school basketball training, training with her skills coach, representative team training, and strength and conditioning. She even trains with her skills coach during Easter, Boxing Day and school holidays. The Wickers are on song By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 13 On the surface, a 34-point win doesn’t appear to be anything special. But it was the manner in which Berwick knocked over the in-form Beaconsfield that was just so impressive. Whether it’s with their backs against the wall, in the driving rain, or with sunny and dry conditions, the Wickers just always have that extra gear to their game. Despite appearing to have settled the quicker of the two sides down at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday, Leigh McQuillen’s Eagles got the early break after a cracking goal in traffic from Kyle O’Sullivan saw the visitors push in front and take in a six-point lead at quarter time. Even though Ash Smith’s drive was providing a headache, and the likes of Jo West, Harry Money and Jesse Cirulis started strong, the visitors’ miserly defence was on top. Early in the second quarter, the Eagles managed to extend their margin to two-goals, before a piece of magic from one of the competition’s superstars got the home side up and about. Travis Tuck - who had a quiet start to the game - snapped the ball in heavy traffic from almost the paint of 50, kick starting a blistering run from the champs that saw them take control and punish the Eagles on turnover. When Harry Money calmly slotted his third goal midway through the second term to drag the lead out to 18 points, the Wickers had quickly wrestled back control with five unanswered goals in a matter of 15 minutes. Another further two goals before half-time effectively put the game to bed, with Rhys Nisbet’s electric side walking into the main break with a 29-point lead after a goal on the siren. Despite the Eagles continuing to try and take on the corridor, the sheer class and pressure applied by the home side proved too hot to handle, with a James Magner goal after the three-quarter time siren quashing any chance of a late comeback. Running out 11.8 (74) to 5.10 (40) winners in what was a lacklustre final term, the Wickers fired a warning shot for all opposition clubs to be wary of. play once more with another three majors to take his tally to 46 for the year. Youngster Nick Green - playing just his third senior game - was very impressive, and kicked a nice goal. Wandin’s tremendous turnaround in 2019 also continued on Saturday against Cranbourne, surging into the top five and displacing the Eagles from fifth spot as a result. The Dogs and Eagles fought out a fascinating battle at The Kennel, with the home side holding on in a tense final term, 12.20 (92) to 13.11 (89). In particular, the Dogs surged ahead with an excellent final half, motoring back from 20 points down at the major break to wrestle back momentum thereafter. Once again, Rohan Heasley was crucial for the home side, while Michael Fowkes, Mark Sandfort and David Barton were all named in the best. For the Eagles - who continue to battle its own injury concerns - defender Jordan Bertrand was super, while Shaun Marusic’s strong form in the middle continued with another strong game. The crucial result means that the Dogs move into fifth spot on 28 points, with the Eagles sitting just behind on 26 points as the race for the remaining finals position continues. The Dogs in particular have been com-
pletely dominant on their home deck in 2019, and will fancy their chances when they welcome Narre Warren on Saturday, and with a comfortable run home - including clashes against Upwey Tecoma, Healesville and Olinda Ferny Creek - will be hard to remove from fifth. Narre Warren, meanwhile, picked up an expected win against Healesville at home, registering a whopping 53 scoring shots, 31.22 (208) to 8.6 (54). With Michael Collins’ purple-patch up forward continuing with another six majors, and Daniel Jackson also snaring half a dozen, the Magpies were never challenged after opening up a 45-point lead at quarter time. In the remaining match of the round, Woori Yallock, fought off a fierce challenge from Olinda Ferny Creek to bank a 22-point win, 12.12 (84) to 9.8 (62). The loss in particular makes the Bloods’ finals hopes even more difficult, now sitting two games behind the Dogs in fifth. The blockbuster matches simply don’t end in the lead-up to finals, with Narre Warren making the trip to take on Wandin at the Kennel this Saturday- a crucial match in the context of the season. In Division 1, Pakenham coach Ash Green admitted that it was extremely difficult for his side to go out and play football on the week-
end against Belgrave. With Pakenham head trainer and hugely popular figure Neil Poulton’s sudden passing throughout the week, Green said the last thing on his club’s mind on the weekend was going out and playing for four points. “It’s been a tough week - being a young team, it’s impacted them a lot, and all the players to be honest,” he said. “It was really hard; the boys were really flat in the first half. I pushed them pretty hard to just get them out of that mindset.” Green said that football took a backwards step through the week in order to come to terms with the tragedy, and that it was obvious that from the outset that his group struggled to get their mind on the game. “It was our mindset, we missed a lot of tackles early, even the voice and encouragement wasn’t there - we didn’t talk much about Neil in the pre-game, but we spoke about it all a lot on Thursday, and it impacted our preparation a bit,” he said. “We didn’t prepare really on a football sense this week, it was more making sure the kids were right - footy took a backwards step, but we had a game to play, and we got better in the second half. “But the bye’s come at a good time - we would have struggled again mentally if we were playing this week.” The Lions’ football and netball clubs - along with Belgrave - shared a minute silence prior to the game on Saturday to pay tribute to a man who meant a lot to the community, before Green’s second-placed group got the job done comfortably despite some wayward kicking at goal, 16.24 (120) to 3.4 (22). The returning Dermott Yawney proved a handle for the Magpies, while debutant Thomas Gamble kicked three in an impressive performance. “I’m proud of the guys, they worked really hard, and Belgrave didn’t make it easy for us,” he said of the game. “We hit the post five times in the first half, and when you kick more points than behinds, it does build a bit of pressure. “It’s been an emotional week, and I’m proud that the boys got away with a win - we certainly sang the song with plenty of gusto after the game in a bit of tribute to Neil as well.” In the remaining match of the AFL Outer East Division 1 round, a wayward Monbulk did what they needed to against Warburton Millgrove at home to keep its distance from Pakenham at the top, 11.22 (88) to 5.2 (32).
