By Casey Neill A Lilydale community park received a muchneeded spruce-up over the weekend.

Friends of Olinda Creek members are working with Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water to co-ordinate the renewal of a community park between Main and John streets.

They're working to transform the space into a community garden.

The project kicked off with a planting day on Saturday 20 July.

said the aim was to plant more diverse indigenous plants to strengthen the wildlife corridor and beautify the creek side.

"This central park is a start with beautiful windows into the creek, and an opening for community potential," Mr Dempsey said.

The project will add more berries and fruit trees - including bush tucker - on the levee bank side, to edge toward food security and nourishing community spirit.

Melbourne Water sponsored the planting day, supplying 400 diverse natives, and the council had been supplying woodchips to help

prepare the ground.

Mr Dempsey said Bunnings also contributed some interesting plants.

The group will now have weekly working bees, from 2pm to 4pm on Saturdays and on Fridays from 10am for student teams.

He said Lions Club volunteers had pledged to help once spring arrived.

"Bring a favourite indigenous seedling and digging tool, an afternoon picnic, or just your company," Mr Dempsey said.

"A long-term aim is to build community

momentum and resilience to climate change through collaborative Leadership and nourishing company.

"We can see into magic windows and hear the ripple over rocks along this jewel of Lilydale."

Mr Dempsey told the Mail that the time had come for ambitious gardening and community nourishment.

Angling for cruelty Why are Victorians being encouraged to be cruel to animals?

Recently Quarry Lake in Ferntree Gully was stocked with hundreds of fish as part of the Victorian Government’s $46 million program aimed at growing the number of anglers to one million by 2020.

But let’s think about what angling entails.

It entails tricking inoffensive animals into swallowing sharp, metal hooks, dragging the terrified animals from their watery homes and then slowly asphyxiating them.

Isn’t this cruelty?

Less than 24 hours after a tree fell onto a car in Sherbrooke and killed a father and his young son, the Mail heard that media outlets were cold-calling Cockatoo residents and businesses and approaching people in the street.

Their aim, it appeared, was to be the first to find out the names of the two people taken so suddenly.

I reached out on Facebook to let our readers know we were not among the ‘journalists’ waiting outside Cockatoo Primary School, or those asking workers in stores across Cockatoo, Emerald and Monbulk if they knew those who had died.

The response was overwhelming and heart-warming.

I didn’t expect the comments of thanks that poured in, but they reinforced that we were doing the right thing.

The tragedy was unquestionably newsworthy and not something we could - or should - ignore.

The public interest was there and it is our role as a local news source to document significant local events, no matter how heart-breaking.

What I did question was the benefit in prying names from a rocked community, likely before all friends and relatives had even been informed.

I now know those names, but I’m electing not to publish them.

We will be here if and when family and friends choose to pay tribute to their lost loved ones.

We will be here should the community seek our help to support this grieving family.

If someone did this to your dog would there be any doubt in your mind that it was cruelty?

Well, researchers have demonstrated that fish feel pain in a similar manner to mammals.

But, even without this research, the behaviour of hooked fish as they struggle and gasp for oxygen should be sufficient to tell us they are suffering.

Apart from the fact that this activity is immensely cruel, wouldn’t $46 million be better spent on encouraging some type of active recreation - such as hiking or games - that would actually benefit our health?

IN BRIEF Man hit by bus

Days numbered

A bus struck a man in his sixties on BelgraveGembrook Road in Menzies Creek about 7pm on Friday 19 July.

It’s believed the man was helping an injured wombat between School and Church roads when the 695 Ventura bus struck him.

He was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson at The Alfred said the man remained in a critical but stable condition.

By Derek Schlennstedt The Barn Owl cafe in Silvan might close after Yarra Ranges Council found it was operating illegally in a Green Wedge Zone.

The ordeal started last year when the council advised 26-year-old Katie Wolff that the building she was operating from was registered as a shed and not a cafe, and that it would have to be closed.

“Twelve months ago I got a letter saying I had to close in seven days,“ she said.

“We were told that the building is registered as a shed, not a cafe, so I was illegally trading and that I had to go to a building surveyor to make it compliant.

“I got the list done and probably spent $60,000 or more to get the building compliant and then sent the permit off to council, and it got rejected by planning because of the land we’re on.”

That land is in a Green Wedge Zone, which is defined under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 as land that is recognised and protected for its agricultural, environmental, historic, landscape or recreational values, or mineral and stone resources.

This means a cafe cannot exist there.

An amendment to change the land zoning would require authorisation from the State Government Planning Minister, which would then need to be passed by Parliament.

Despite the land zoning, Ms Wolff explained that the building had been running as a cafe for eight years before she leased the space.

She said that from the beginning there was never any suggestion that she could not operate a cafe from the building.

“I knew I had to sell the berries from the farm in this cafe in order to stay open, but that was literally all I was told when I took over,” she said.

The closure will not only affect Ms Wolff but her 11 employees, who all live in the area.

Seven times over A 30-year-old woman was almost seven times the legal blood alcohol limit after allegedly rearending a car in Cockatoo on Friday 19 July.

An off-duty police officer reported seeing a vehicle driving erratically shortly before 5.30pm.

Mount Evelyn police tracked the driver to her Launching Place home where she allegedly returned a positive breath test.

She also admitted to being involved in a collision with another vehicle on Paternoster Road shortly after 5pm - she exchanged details with the other driver before heading home.

Police took the woman to Lilydale Police Station for an evidentiary breath test where she allegedly returned a reading of .345.

Her licence was immediately suspended and she will be charged via summons in relation to drink driving and other traffic-related offences.

Yarra Ranges Council social and economic development director James Collins said council staff would be meeting with Ms Wolff at the end of the month to "find the best way forward to resolve any planning and building issues for the site”.

Mr Collins said that last year, the council issued a building order to a cafe asking the business operator to retrofit the building to meet current building regulations.

"This is to ensure that buildings are safe for public and private use,“ he said.

Time to play at new space in Olinda

The opening on 19 July signalled the completion of the first stage of a $7.67 million redevelopment.

“This is the largest regional playspace in the Dandenongs and uniquely incorporates mosaic artwork created by local school kids,” Monbulk MP James Merlino said at the opening.

“The closure of the Olinda Golf Course presented a great opportunity to create a new public space to suit the needs of the whole community.

“This is a fantastic space for the people of Olinda.

sports and training oval, netball courts and improvements to cricket facilities to reduce the strain on existing services.

This playspace includes an all-abilities playscape, new barbecues, picnic facilities, shelters, seating, a new toilet block and formalised pathways around the former golf course as part of a dog off-lead area.

Several local artists have also contributed to the playspace’s design, providing a unique link with the nature and community that surrounds it.

Mr Merlion said the overall precinct plan would provide new and improved facilities, experiences and recreational opportunities to create a multi-purpose local outdoor hub while retaining the precinct's environmental values.

A car struck a man while he was walking along Monbulk Road outside the Micawber Tavern on Saturday 20 July, about 11pm.

He was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver is assisting police with inquiries.

Bus burglary bust A man is facing theft and drug charges following a raid on Ventura Buses in Monbulk.

Yarra Ranges CIU detectives allege the 29-year-old Mooroolbark man broke into the Old Emerald Road yard between 5pm on 14 July and 5am the following day.

They said he broke into 12 buses and stole eight GPS units, a personal GPS system and a portable speaker.

Police searched the man's home on 15 July and allegedly recovered the stolen property.

They also uncovered a traffickable quantity of cannabis during the search.

The man was remanded to face court at a later date.

Stolen items Olinda police are trying to return stolen items to theft victims.

On 17June they arrested and charged a man over 43 incidents of theft from and of motor cars.

They recovered a variety of property such as jumpers, coats, pants, sunglasses, back packs, boxing gloves and a subwoofer.

Police would like to return as much property to victims as they can.

The thefts occurred mainly in the Upwey, Mooroolbark, Silvan and Ferntree Gully areas.

Owners should email vp27951@police.vic. gov.au with images of the property they had stolen.

Mount Evelyn’s top trails We're fortunate in Mount Evelyn to have our network of historic walking and shared-use trails.

While you're out for your morning run or walking the dog, you can travel back in time and imagine Mount Evelyn as it was in past decades.

The present township of Mount Evelyn grew up around the highest station on the Lilydale to Warburton railway line (1901-1965).

Without the railway, Mount Evelyn would never have existed at its present location on the ridge top. The original settlement was situated down on the creek flats.

The railway alignment is now the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.

Lilydale's first water supply, opened in 1905, was drawn from the Cascades on Olinda Creek and carried water, via a five and a quar-

Part of the route can still be followed as the Water Race Trail, running from the Puddle Dam, via Sharland Close, and along the northern boundary of Quinn Reserve.

The Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Trail preserves the routes and structures from two periods of Melbourne's water supply history.

The O'Shannassy Aqueduct, built 19121913, passed through Mount Evelyn as an open channel.

Silvan Reservoir was constructed in the late 1920s, its outflow aqueduct joining the older O'Shannassy system near Mount Evelyn Primary School.

The original concrete channel and bridges have been preserved in the bushland section of the Aqueduct Trail between Hunter Road and Priestley Crescent.

The Olinda Creek Trail currently exists in two sections.

One runs between the creek and Swansea Road, passing through the site of the Olinda Creek Settlement, which pre-dated the Mount Evelyn township.

No trace now remains of the village of slab and bark huts that stood there from the 1890s, but the Indigenous history of the area is acknowledged on a sign board.

The section of Olinda Creek Trail from Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve to Silvan Reservoir follows the pipeline that replaced the open aqueduct in the 1960s.

The Cave Hill Tramway ran nearby, but closer to the creek.

These historic transport and water supply trails are central to Mount Evelyn's identity.

Mount Evelyn History Group acknowledged their significance in the title of our book Tracks to Trails, a history of Mount Evelyn.

Water just a tap away to quench community’s thirst Fully-accessible water fountains are flowing across the Yarra Ranges.

The council is introducing 11 of the new hydration stations, which feature all-ability handles for drinking or water bottle refill plus a dog bowl.

Acting Yarra Ranges Mayor Richard Higgins said the fountains were designed to be accessible for people of any ability, following feedback from the council's Disability Advisory Committee (DAC).

"Committee members told us that buttonoperated fountains were impossible for people with a disability to use easily," he said.

"The manufacturers of our fountains came up with this design, which has an easy-toreach lever action.

"Rather than pushing a button, you just have to apply pressure to a lever.

"The taps are now easily accessible for people in wheelchairs and those with limited use of their hands."

Cr Higgins said these were the first fountains in Australia using this design.

"We've already had great feedback about

Accessible drinking fountains have so far been installed in Healesville's main street near the crossing; Belgrave's main street near the Hayes car park; Upwey's main street near the play space; Lilydale's main street near Olinda Creek; Lillydale Lake, on the far side from the car park; PJ Mould Reserve in Wandin; McKenzie King play space in Millgrove; and Kilsyth, near the town hall.

Three more will be installed soon at Norman Reserve in Mount Dandenong; near the crossing in Melba Highway, Yarra Glen; and near the public toilets in Monbulk's main street.

Local startup helps

By Derek Schlennstedt We all have different expectations from our clothes.

We use clothing to express our personalities and to fit in with our peer groups, so we need clothing to be fashionable and trend setting, and when we find the right outfit it enhances our appearance and we feel good and confident about ourselves.

So, why is the majority of high street clothing made to enhance the able-bodied figure, with little or no regard for the disabled?

Two people who are addressing that issue is hills local Molly Rogers, and Malvern East's Emma Clegg who founded JAM - a clothing label that puts young disabled people at the fore.

Ms Clegg told the Mail that their adaptive clothing range is named after after Jack and Maddie, two cerebral palsy teenagers who Emma and Molly cared for when they were disability support workers.

"We were both working as disability support workers while at university and we used to come together after our shifts and we'd always talk about how hard is it was to get them dressed," she said.

"We both felt that it was a ridiculous issue that they shouldn't have to face, as any clothes that were easy to put on were daggy or not appropriate."

More than 4 million Australians are estimated to have a disability, yet only a handful of boutique manufacturers across the country design inclusive and adaptive clothing for them.

Ms Clegg explained that JAM was created for young people with a disability who want to be able to get dressed easily, while still 'looking and feeling funky.'

Their clothing range includes stylish, yet functional jackets and long/short sleeve tshirts.

An adaptive clothing range founded by Selby local Molly Rogers and Malvern East resident Emma Clegg was inspired by two Cerebral Palsy teenagers, Maddie, and Jack from Belgrave South.

"We want it to be like any other fashion label," Ms Clegg said.

"We started with a jacket which is for wheelchair users and from the front looks like an everyday spray jacket, but we've adapted it so that both sides of our Jackets are fully zip-able.

"When putting it on, the zip connects at each wrist and goes all along the sleeve and side of the Jacket.

"The back of the Jacket is shorter to prevent extra fabric bunching."

Ms Clegg explained that these small changes mean the Jacket can be fully opened up, put on and taken off like a poncho.

"The Jacket simply gets placed over the head then zipped up," she said.

Each modification has been thoughtfully made to make it easier to get dressed, but most of all gives people with a disability the opportunity to look and express themselves through

their clothing.

Ms Clegg said a long history of segregation of people with a disability in Australia has led to a lack of diversity within the fashion industry, but acknowledged some progress has been made internationally.

"The fashion industry within Australia is targeted to the mainstream population, excluding the 1 in 5 people in the country that have a disability - we want to change this statistic," she said.

"We've found it's started a conversation for families that they don't have to accept that their child's clothing has to be boring and that their kids can look like any other teenager and express themselves through their clothes like any other teenager."

She Can Ride was among four projects to share in more than $450,000 as part of VicHealth's Innovation Challenge, which aims to make sport accessible to Victorians who don't have as many opportunities to take part.

She Can Ride is a beginner's mountain bike program for girls aged seven to 17 years, run by Yarra Ranges Council.

The sport is traditionally male-dominated.

"These projects are about bringing sport to new audiences," VicHealth acting CEO Lyn Roberts said.

"This is about making mountain biking less intimidating for girls - your gender shouldn't be a barrier to getting active and enjoying nature."

Comment on the climate Yarra Ranges Council wants residents to guide its action on climate change.

The shire is running a new online poll on the issue.

The council has already installed more than 3000 solar panels on its buildings and helped the community to adopt renewable energy.

The poll involves answering three questions on what the council can do for climate change.

Residents are invited to comment on what else the council should do to reduce its own emissions, what else it could do to lower emissions in the community, and what additional support the community needs from the council to adapt to a changing climate.

Molly Moon’s close call

By Derek Schlennstedt A unique not-for-profit charity assisting people with their vet bills has helped a Belgrave single mother hold onto her four-legged friend.

When Rachel Gordon first noticed a lump back of her dogs leg in December 2018, she passed it off as a benign growth, as did the vets.

But, when that tumour started to grow she feared that it was something far more insidious.

Speaking to the Mail, Ms Gordon said the family has had the loveable English Staffy since she was a puppy.

"Molly was the last of her litter, and unwanted due to her small size," Ms Gordon said.

"We fell in love with her at sight. She came into our lives after my marriage break down.

My children were one and four at the time."

"Molly's been a stable part of their life since then and both my children suffer anxiety, so she is like a companion dog for them.

"She helps calm my daughter down when she is not coping. She provides us so much love, safety and friendship beyond any measurable words."

That love was not enough to save Molly though, and the family was hard-pressed to find a way to raise enough money to undertake expensive lifesaving surgery.

The surgery was estimated at about $1000 — a tough ask for the Gordon family, who were already going through tough financial times.

"We weren't in any financial situation to cope with that," she said.

"The kids were beside themselves about what might happen and they were offering to give their pocket money."

Luckily, the Pet Medical Crisis Fund came to their rescue.

The not-for-profit charity not only helps pet owners and their pets, but also assists vets by not having to absorb the costs associated with treating pets free of charge.

Ms Gordon said that Ferntree Gully Veterinary agreed to waive the cost of the initial consult, and a further 20% off the surgery.

This along with the help of the Pet Medical Crisis made it possible for the vet to remove the cancerous lump.

"They did an estimate of what it was going to cost and they agreed she urgently needed the surgery," Ms Gordon said.

"We were able to come to an agreement where the vet reduced their fee, I put in an amount, and Pet Medical Crisis put in an amount.

"Without them we could not have done the surgery and without that Molly wouldn't be with us today, so I can't thank them enough for their involvement and their assistance."

The Pet Medical Crisis Fund relies on public donations to continue its work and is run by volunteers. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Marching for peace through Lilydale’s Castella Street War veterans recreated a peace march through Lilydale, 100 years since the original.

World War I veterans marched down Castella Street to celebrate the Treaty of Versailles officially ending The Great War on 19 July 1919.

The recreation started at 11am on Saturday 20 July outside Lilydale Primary School.

The march followed the original route down Castella Street to the Athenaeum Theatre, where a ceremony took place under the Shire of Lillydale World War I Honour Board.

Veterans included on the honour board hailed from Coldstream, Croydon, Gruyere, Kalorama, Kilsyth, Lilydale, Monbulk, Montrose, Mooroolbark, Mount Dandenong, Mount Evelyn, Olinda, Ringwood, Seville, Silvan, Wandin, Wonga Park and Yering.

Armistice Day, today known as Remembrance Day, on 11 November 1918 signalled a ceasefire in The Great War. WWI officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 29 June 1919.

The document was among five treaties formulated at the Paris Peace Conference and established the conditions of peace with Germany.

Group looking great Look Good Feel Better is celebrating 10 years of service at Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale.

The Cancer Patients Foundation-run, free national community service program is dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related cancer treatment side-effects.

The group workshops go through skincare techniques to address common side-effects like dryness and sun sensitivity; make-up tips to help correct and conceal redness, sallowness, pigmentation and dark circles as well as techniques for drawing on eyebrows; and advice on headwear including scarf styling and wig selection.

Each participant receives a Confidence Kit full of donated skincare and make-up products from the cosmetic industry to use as tools for application throughout the workshop and for continued use in their own homes.

Jo Mapes, the Yarra Ranges Health nursing director at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health, said the program was a highlight for the patients who attended.

“Eastern Health is thrilled to host the Look Good Feel Better program and we would like to congratulate everyone at Yarra Ranges Health for their involvement over the last 10 years,” she said.

“This program has brought much joy to many of our patients, giving them an opportunity to feel their best and share the experience with others in a similar situation.

“It has brought many smiles to the faces of those going through a very challenging time, and we would like to thank the Cancer Patients Foundation for their work with us over the last decade.”

The Cancer Patients Foundation’s Victoria and Tasmania program manager, Faye Venning, attended Yarra Ranges Health on Wednesday 10 July to make a presentation to celebrate 10 years of service.

Look Good Feel Better holds about 1000

workshops in 180 venues across Australia each year. To date, more than 130,000 people have participated in the program.

More international visitors are spending the night in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, latest figures show.

Results from the National Visitor Survey released on 17 July showed the region received about six million domestic and international visitors for the year to the end of March.

They collectively spent about $756 million.

The survey found daytrip visitors to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges spent about $379 million, an increase of 9.3 per cent compared to the previous year.

The region attracted about 50,000 international overnight visitors for the 12-month period, an increase of 3.1 per cent year-on-year.

Visit Victoria CEO Peter Bingeman said positive results across the state had been achieved through interstate and intrastate marketing campaigns, alongside major and regional events.

"Visit Victoria has a clear strategy to encourage Melburnians to visit regional Victoria, backed by the Your Happy Space campaign and more the 200 regional events over the past three years," he said.

"The latest results show our strategy is working with an 11 per cent increase in intrastate visitors, an 11 per cent increase in visitor nights, and intrastate expenditure up by 14 per cent to reach $5.4 billion."

The survey found the top five international countries for visitors to Melbourne were China, New Zealand, the US, the UK and India.

"These figures show we are on the right track and we're getting on with attracting even more visitors from Australia and around the world to experience the thrill of our major events, natural wonders, iconic food and wine scene and world-class accommodation," Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula said.

Tourism supports more than 214,000 jobs in Victoria, including 85,000 in regional areas.

Crucial draw shakes it up

Cranbourne and Woori Yallock played out the most thrilling of draws on Saturday down at Franken Homes Oval, with the Tigers snatching a goal after the siren to share the points, 11.8 (74) to 11.8 (74).

Tigers forward Jake Matthews sealed the result with a cool and calm set-shot after the siren, putting to an end a clash full of tension and clutch moments in AFL Outer East's Premier Division.

As a result of the draw, the Eagles are barely hanging onto fifth spot as crunch time looms for Steve O'Brien's side, while Woori are remarkably into third spot and assured themselves of playing finals footy.

Woori trailed by 14-points at the first break, but roared back to life with a seven goal to one second term, with Alex Marsh - as well as Matthews - looking particularly ominous up forward.

But the game significantly tightened in the second half, with the home side snatching back the lead in a low scoring third term before Matthews' after the siren goal finally brought to an end a fascinating battle.

Zach Monkhorst's brilliant season continued with a best afield display for the visiting Tigers, while Shaun Marusic played his best game of the year for the home side.

Club Cross Country Champions decided Local EFL results

The contrast in weather was welcomed by all who attended the Yarra Ranges Athletics 2019 Cross Country Championships, with the wild day of the week prior a distant memory in the mild and clear conditions at Morrison Reserve on Saturday.

The lure of being recognised as the best in an age group extracted fantastic performances through all the races as 54 new personal bests were recorded on the toughest of courses.

A wonderful atmosphere of support was provided in every race. All athletes and supporters remained for the duration to enjoy the medal presentations after the final runner had finished.

Jose lives his AFL dream

By Derek Schlennstedt Jose Vaskess grew up playing AFL, watching games and supporting his beloved Essendon.

Last week the 21-year-old Emerald local travelled to Sydney to wear the big V jumper and represent Victoria at the 2019 AFL National Inclusion Carnival competition.

As a child, Jose was diagnosed with cognitive disabilities, but it was sport that managed to hold his focus.

“Jose was always incredibly good at sport.

At age two he was climbing apple trees and I had to put my fears aside and let him go for it,” Jose’s mum, Catriona, said.

A talented horse rider, Jose was named Riding Develops Abilities' state dressage champion at age 10, but instead chose to focus on football.

From the age of eight, Jose started watching AFL. He played mainstream junior football from ages 10 to 15 and returned to the sport a couple of years ago, joining Ferntree Gully Eagles in the FIDA League - a Victorian football league for people with an intellectual disability.

“The FIDA league has provided a positive environment for Jose, providing the necessary support, enabling new friendships, and an opportunity to excel, it has done wonders for selfesteem,“ Catriona said.

Despite excelling on the sporting field, Jose had challenges transitioning out of school into employment.

But in 2017 he was able to join the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which provided support to enable him to volunteer at local primary schools.

Jose is now a PE teacher’s assistant, volunteering three days a week at three schools close to home.

His NDIS funding also provides support workers who assist him each day.

Jose Vaskess tried to find a way through on his opponents.

“His goal is to be a sports coach, and the NDIS has been really good for him because we could tailor his funding to meet his needs,” Catriona said.

“The funding and the support workers at school mean he’s learning life skills and workplace expectations while at the same time being actively involved in his great love of sport.

“It’s also providing structure, and the opportunity to surround him with positive role models.”

Jose’s support workers also accompany him to the local football every second weekend, so he can continue to support the Emerald Football Club.

The club recently provided him with the opportunity to meet Dustin Fletcher, one of his footy idols.

The NDIS also provides funding for his occupational therapy, the first such funding available to him since primary school.

When Catriona and Jose’s dad Ian reflect

on the progress Jose has made to represent his state, they’re filled with pride.

“It’s really significant because we get to see him do what he loves at a really high level," Catriona said.

“It reinforces the fact that he’s highly accomplished as a sportsperson, that makes us really proud.”

According to Jose, he loves the carnival because he gets to play footy - his great love - for a whole week.
