A generous soul

By Derek Schlennstedt The Ferntree Gully community is mourning the loss of local man Emil Pich, 60, who died on 11 July after his Melbourne-bound coach smashed into an overturned B-double in Victoria's northwest.

Mr Pich, 60, was driving a 45-passenger coach from Adelaide to Melbourne when it hit two trailers that had detached from a B-double truck and fell across the Western Highway near Horsham, blocking the road.

The Ferntree Gully grandfather has been remembered for his selfless evasive action, which resulted in the driver's cabin taking the

aged 60 years who had been a long standing team member of Firefly for more than 25 years, driving the interstate and intrastate services operated by Firefly. Emil was a highly valued member of our team and we are all absolutely devastated by his passing."

"Our staff have all been informed of Emil's passing and the incident is having a considerable impact on all concerned, having lost both a team member and friend", Mr Bono said.

Mr Pich's son, Rhys paid tribute to his father on Facebook.

"Not being able to say goodbye to my father Emil Pich feels like my heart has been smashed into a million pieces."

Nine passengers were treated by paramedics at the scene, including two people who were airlifted to Melbourne with leg and arm injuries.

Mr Pich, from Ferntree Gully in Melbourne's east, died from his injuries at the scene.

Company General Manager, Mr Frank Bono of Pich's bus company, Firefly, said he had worked for the business for over 25 years.

"Tragically, one of our long standing team members lost his life today. We have expressed our condolences directly to a representative of the family," Mr Bono said, "The team member involved was Emil Pich,

"My father, my friend, a generous soul, you will always have a special place in the depths of my soul, our memories shared will be cherished for a lifetime and from the deepest depths of my heart you are forever loved."

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash and believe the trailers of the B-double, which was travelling in front of the coach, had come loose and blocked the road.

A woman who was a passenger in the truck involved in the incident has since been charged by police with drug trafficking offences.

She is due to face Horsham Magistrates Court on July 29.

SES is opening up

By Derek Schlennstedt The busiest SES unit in Victoria is also one of the most under resourced.

For years Emerald SES members have worked out of a small, single concrete building in Emerald with no change rooms, no official office area and a kitchen that can only fit one person at any time.

Following the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino's announcement in 2019, the unit is being relocated to a new, fit-forpurpose site on Belgrave-Gembrook Rd, which will allow the Emerald SES to better serve the community.

That relocation isn't far away and the unit is holding a community information day where residents can learn more about the new stateof-the-art facility.

Emerald SES controller, Ben Owen said operating from their current location has been difficult.

"It's very cluttered," he said.

"We've got a water heater and a microwave and that's about it in our kitchen area where as in the new area there is going to be a fullyfledged kitchen and lounge room, with a dishwasher."

"Ninety-five per cent of our members have to store their uniforms in their cars as we just don't have the space. We even have to park one of our four-wheel-drive units at Cockatoo CFA because we don't have room for it and they graciously allowed us to use some of theirs."

Construction on the new unit is expected to start in September, with volunteers set to take possession by mid-2020. The new building will replace the existing unit on Old Gembrook Rd which volunteers had long outgrown.

Tecoma resident Isaac Waterhouse is hoping his first custom-designed guitar will help launch a career in the specialised world of guitar luthiers.

The former Beaconhills College student has just finished crafting his first 'through neck' electric guitar, representing hours of work over the past year.

Since its completion the guitarist has taken his guitar, made from American maple and blackwood, to music teachers at both Beaconhills and Box Hill Institute and had glowing reviews on its performance.

"It has been very positive," he said.

"Because the rock maple is so dense and heavy, the sustain - the endurance of the string's vibration - is incredibly good."

"It's a very gratifying to hear a professional speak highly of your work and having someone who is a professional playing it and enjoying the experience is quite humbling."

Mr Waterhouse credited Beaconhills College for inspiring his interest in guitar design.

AFL Outer East is reminding footy patrons to leave their pets at home on game-days.

The league is calling on local clubs to tighten up how they enforce the rules regarding allowing pets into grounds.

A post on the AFL Outer East Facebook page read, "We all love our pets, but crowded places are not the best for them."

The post referred to a recent case of a young supporter being bitten by a dog at the football.

An AFL Outer East spokesperson said that the rules are reliant on clubs manning their gates vigilantly, but more importantly on spectators respecting the rules and the rights of other patrons to feel comfortable whilst enjoying weekend sport.

House numbers matter

The Emerald SES is having community day on 20 July from 12-3pm on the corner of Old Gembrook and Sheriffs road, Emerald, where they will be answering questions about their new facility.

Emerald's 51 volunteers are among the most active in Victoria and respond to more than 800 requests every year.

Mr Owen explained that the new building will enable volunteers to halve their response times.

"It's going to be so much more efficient being able to attend incidents as there won't be so much running around," Mr Owen explained.

"It'll make our emergency volunteers more comfortable and mean we will be able to ser-

vice the community much more effectively."

The community day will be held on 20 July from 12-3pm at their current facility on the corner of Old Gembrook and Sheriffs road, Emerald.

"The open day is about letting people come in, see what we've been working in, what the issue is with our current facility and where we'll be relocating too," Mr Owen said.

"There will be audio visual displays and the building authority will be here to answer questions too."

He said systems engineering encouraged him to investigate how things worked by breaking them down into their various components.

With a bachelor degree in musical performance and having played guitar for 18 years Mr Waterhouse said it was a slow progression to building guitars.

"I'd been fiddling for about three years and then I was given an old guitar from someone and I ripped it apart, and saw how it worked."

In total the project took ten months to complete, though Mr Waterhouse said that the entire guitar was built from scratch.

"The hardest part was just deciding what to do, what timber to choose, what design, what fret radius what strings ... there are so many options so it really hard to choose one."

"You're nervous every step of the way, because when you're choosing a timber whatever you choose you're going to have to work with for the next two months."

He is now working on a second guitar, incorporating some new design modifications.

The CFA is urging Yarra Ranges residents to make their house numbers clearly visible.

A post on the CFA District 13 Facebook page said doing so could save lives.

"Street numbering displayed should be reflective both day and night and the numbers should be attached to a letterbox, a post, a dedicated board or the boundary fence," the post said.

"It should be large enough to be clearly readable from the road.

"When properties are clearly numbered our emergency services can find you quickly and reduce any delay in response time.

"Hidden or non-existent house numbers can waste time, and in an emergency situation every second counts."

The post also explained Victoria's rural addressing system, which is based on the property's distance property from the start of the road.

"Many benefits come from having a rural road number and as stated, having your number clearly readable from the road is particularly important in emergency situations when time is critical," the CFA said.

"It is important for rural residents to use their rural road number when providing their address to emergency services and that the number is clearly displayed on the main access point to the property.

"Lot numbers, RMB and older shire numbers should no longer be used and these numbers should be removed if displayed at the front of the property."

Visible rural road numbers also provide a reference point for emergency services to locate other numbered properties along the road.

The post recommended contacting Yarra Ranges Council with any questions regarding the rural road numbering system, not the CFA.

Veteran probe call

By Derek Schlennstedt Eight Emerald RSL veterans have called on the Federal Government to undertake a royal commission into veteran suicides.

In a letter to the editor former Emerald RSL President Peter Maloney said there has been a large ground swell within the veteran fraternity, who want to see the issue of veteran suicide addressed.

"As Vietnam veterans we ask our federal government to immediately call a royal commission into veteran suicides."

"We are mystified why the government continues to ignore calls for a royal commission into veteran suicides when the minister recently acknowledged there are 30 veteran suicides a year (a figure that is now almost three years old) in the last three years it has more than doubled. " The letter drew comparisons between 2007 Veterans affairs minister Alan Griffin and current affairs minister Darren Chester.

The letter stated that both have made state-

ments regarding improvements being underway.

All that has changed in the last decade is the system has become more adversarial, DVA's performance indicators have declined, previous DVA management have failed to follow legislation and worst of all nearly another 400 veterans have taken their life."

"Two years ago Minister Tehan made an excellent announcement of immediate and free treatment for mental health issues ... veterans now have to wait on average six weeks and in some cases six months for an appointment. " Eight veterans from Emerald RSL signed the letter, which called upon Casey MP Tony Smith and Latrobe MP Jason Wood "to publicly declare where they stand on a royal Commission into veteran Suicide," Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said that he will personally pass the letter to PM and Veterans Minister Darren Chester.

"I would like to acknowledge all signatories of letter and I highly respect them all," Mr Wood said

Member for La Trobe Tony Smith said he would "continue to advocate for the very best of support for those who have served our nation."

"We are committed to putting veterans and their families first and provide over $11 billion per year," MP "The government is working closely and constructively with the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Defence and ex-service organisations to improve veterans' mental health and the Prime Minister has said all options are on the table regarding a royal commission or other action."

"The Government has already taken extensive action against veteran suicide including introducing life-long free mental health treatment for veterans for any mental health condition, without the need for that mental health condition to be related to military service."

On 4 July 2019 the Federal Government tabled the final report of the Productivity Commission into the Compensation and Rehabilitation of Veterans - A Better Way to Support Veterans.

Batting for Bluey in his cancer fight

By Derek Schlennstedt There are not many people in the Monbulk and Gembrook community who don't know Christian Fraser.

Known to most as 'Bluey,' the hills local grew up in Monbulk and is a beloved teacher at Gembrook Primary School.

What many people might not know is that for the last 18 months he has been fighting an aggressive and rare cancer, which turned his entire life upside-down.

At 36-years-old, Bluey should be playing in the Monbulk senior's cricket team where he used be secretary, but instead he has an aggressive stage four non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and since May 2018 he has undergone over twelve months of multiple different cycles of intensive chemotherapy, a number of major surgeries, and a stem cell transplant.

However, the lymphoma has not responded to the treatment and the family has no other choice but to travel to the United States to seek a new and costly treatment, which is not offered in Australia.

Speaking to the Mail, Bluey said the innovative treatment called CAR T-cell immunotherapy involves removing a portion of Christian's T cells - a type of immune system cell that fights off infection, abnormal or cancerous cells - and re-engineering them with a special marker.

"It's called CAR T-cell immunotherapy," he said.

"It's a few years old now and has been around long enough to be administered in the US but not fully funded here. It's only been available in Australia from April this year, but only if you're 25 years or under, so it's not funded for adults."

"All of my options have really been exhausted for treatment in Australia."

Toddler injured in platform slip A toddler who slipped over on a Puffing Billy platform continued his journey with his family before an ambulance ride to hospital.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed a road ambulance transported a toddler to the Box Hill Hospital in a stable condition just after 4pm on Sunday 14 July.

She said the boy had suffered a head injury following a fall.

A Puffing Billy spokeswoman said a toddler slipped on the platform when the train was stationary and parked at the Lakeside platform.

"The two-year-old boy was leaning against the carriage door when he slipped," she said.

"Thankfully the quick-thinking Puffing Billy train conductor assisted the family by helping the toddler and the child appeared to be uninjured.

"The family then happily continued their ride."

Puffing Billy Railway CEO Steve O'Brien said it was an unfortunate incident but the conductor's swift actions ensured the boy's safety.

"We are extremely proud of the efficient and professional way our team reacted on the scene today and commend our volunteers and staff for their conduct during this unfortunate incident," he said on Sunday.

"We are relieved to know that no one was badly injured and train services have returned to normal."

Head-on crash Police are blaming fatigue for a head-on collision on Monbulk Road, near Ferndale Road, on Sunday 14 July.

Monbulk Police told the Mail that at 4.30pm, two vehicles collided head-on after one drifted onto the wrong side of the road.

A man towing three motorcycles and a woman with a 12-month-old child were involved in the crash.

Paramedics attended but there were no lifethreatening injuries.

Break-in spree

At 36-years-old, Christian Bluey Fraser should be playing in the Monbulk seniors cricket team, but instead he is battling an aggressive and rare cancer that can only be treated in the US. A GoFundMe has since been set up to help fund travel expenses and treatment costs.

The treatment will require Christian to stay in the US for three months and a GoFundMe has been set up to help cover the associated expenses, which are expected to reach over $100,000."We need to be together during this time," Christian's wife Linda said.

"We've got a daughter Ella who is six and a son Hudson who is five, and my mother has generously offered to come with us and take care of the kids, so if I need to be with Christian I can be but it's so important that we're there as a family."

Since being diagnosed Linda and Christian said they have received an overwhelming amount of support from the community.

Earlier in the year the community rallied to

help fund a new family car for the Fraser's, so that Linda could drive Christian to all his appointments.

"We just really want to thank everyone for the support so far ... friends and family, the Monbulk community and wider communities have been so supportive," Christian said.

"The community at Gembrook Primary School where I work has been fantastic and Linda works at Macclesfield, and it's really been overwhelming that so many people are there to support us."

"The gratitude we have can't really be put into words."

Yarra Ranges detectives are investigating a series of thefts on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

Yarra Ranges CIU Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the first occurred between 9pm on Sunday 30 June and 8am on Tuesday 2 July at Montrose Charcoal Chicken.

Thieves broke a back door and stole a cordless drill, some cash and a kebab shaver.

Between 2pm on Monday 1 July and lunch time on Tuesday 2 July, thieves smashed a glass front door to enter a Mount Dandenong Tourist Road milk bar and stole food.

There were two break-ins on Wednesday 3 July, the first between 1am and 2am in Sassafras.

Thieves attended a garden store and used bolt cutters to enter a shed.

They stole garden ornaments, plants and more and fled the scene.

A small dark-coloured hatchback was spotted at the scene of the second break-in, at Kelly's Bar and Kitchen in Olinda, later that morning.

Thieves again cut a padlock on shed and stole a small amount of cash.

Sgt Smithwick said police suspected the thefts were linked and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Gut health in children Functional abdominal pain affects up to 25 per cent of children and presents with multiple symptoms including constipation, diarrhoea, cramp, leg pain, poor appetite and nausea.

It is distressing for children and equally concerning for parents.

In cases where there is no serious pathology, natural medicine can be of great relief.

It is imperative to identify and treat the cause/s of functional abdominal pain for complete resolution.

Triggers must also be identified as this will prevent recurrence while your child recovers.

Nobody likes to see their child endure ongoing pain or feel unwell with lethargy, picky eating, nausea and ongoing pain.

It can be hard knowing what else to do especially if you feel you have tried all options from the GP to the pharmacist.

However, this is a great opportunity to assess the problem from a holistic viewpoint, especially given the gut is affected by multiple external and internal factors.

Tummy pain is often multifaceted, complex and very individualised, yet a thorough and detailed assessment can yield great results.

Take nutrient deficiency, for example.

This can be a common cause of muscle cramp and altered movement, resulting in constipation.

Pain can also be caused by altered signalling systems in the body which are dependent on an array of nutrients to support physiological function.

Low-grade inflammation can drive tummy pain and should be resolved.

Deficiency of essential fatty acids, leaky gut syndrome and food sensitivity will all cause a degree of irritation and inflammation.

These nutrients are not commonly assessed at primary care level but can be assessed.

A common issue I treat frequently is parasitic infection.

This causes nutrient depletion, poor appetite, pain, nausea and lethargy.

Care needs to be exercised with treatment

but an experienced practitioner can clear parasites with highly specific herbal and probiotic strains.

In extremely complex cases, functional pathology testing (which is more comprehensive than first-line GP testing and less invasive than scoping) can provide information on gut function throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Realistically, the issue involves a combination of things that need to be assessed very carefully.

Functional tummy pain in children can be distressing and affect their entire wellbeing.

Parents are often at a loss on how to treat it, especially when serious illness has been ruled out, and yet a holistic approach taking into consideration the broad nature of tummy pain can yield excellent results.

Benny Allen celebrates his country roots Teen-out-often rebellion

Finding your tribe is often life-changing, and so it was the case for singer-songwriter Benny Allen, resulting in his latest single, Never Knew I Was Country.

The singer-songwriter from the Dandenong Ranges has found his calling after discovering country music in 2018.

When Allen returned from his first Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2018, he wrote the autobiographical track, Never Knew I Was Country.

“It wasn’t until the band I’d been playing in, folded, that I went to the guitarist with a couple of songs and he said they sounded country,” Allen said.

“The songs that I’d been writing were for my own benefit and the guitarist produced the first two homemade singles that I recordedGirl I Never Had and Yellowstone.”

Allen decided if he had a country song, he should look into performing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and discovered The Academy, The two songs went out on AMRAP and CRS distribution and radio stations began playing Yellowstone.

Six months before Allen’s graduation from The Academy Allen had only taken the stage as a soloist, but had been playing keys and doing backing vocals in indie rock bands prior to that.

Allen’s previous single, We Will Remember, made the top 10 AMRAP Regional Chart and his new single, Never Knew I Was Country was released to radio on 28 June and is available on the album of the same name.

Black Spot funds are set

By Derek Schlennstedt The Federal Government will invest $364,000 on Paternoster Road in Emerald under the 2019-’20 Black Spot Program.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the community’s input was critical to identifying key black spots in the electorate.

“Road crashes place major emotional and economic strains on all affected communities but particularly the families and friends of the victims,” he said.

“I am pleased to see that projects will install profiled (audio tactile) centreline and

edge lines from Beaconsfield-Emerald Road to Bailey Road (install W-Beam safety barriers) will be delivered under the 2019-’20 funding rounds.

“Motorists living within and visiting La Trobe will also be pleased to know that notorious black spots in the electorate will be fixed with funding from the program.

“None of these projects would be delivered without the community’s vital input and I’d encourage all residents and motorists in the region to nominate projects for future funding rounds.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure,

Transport and Regional Development Minister Michael McCormack said the safety of 71 Victorian road black spots would be substantially improved over the next 12 months with $25 million committed to the state under the 2019-’20 funding round.

“The Black Spot Program targets road locations where crashes are occurring, reducing the risk of accidents through funding safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations,“ he said.

“The 71 black spot projects being funded across Victoria are an important contribution towards reducing the national road toll.

“Funding has been allocated to road locations that have been identified as high priority, with 326 casualty crashes recorded at these sites over the past five years, including 15 fatal crashes.”

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) found that, on average, black spot projects reduced the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent.

The book is a fundraiser for the Make A Wish charity and will be a celebration of motherhood, recognising the amazing contribution and loving bond that mothers have for their children.

Olinda Photographer Tony Rawson is taking part in the project, which hopes to raise $20,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation.

“July is National Family Portrait month and our studio is joining the Make a Wish Foundation to raise $20000 looking for a cure for breast cancer,” he said.

“They will be asked to make a donation

which will then entitle them to a portrait shoot at out studio with a complimentary print for them to keep.”

“Extra prints can be ordered if they wish, but there is no obligation to do so and all money goes straight to the Make A Wish Foundation” It’s a good chance to get a family portrait and help find a cure for breast cancer thing at the same time.

Every participant will have one of their photographs featured in a beautiful book called “A Mother and her Children,” which will be a celebration of the loving bond between a mother and her children.

By Michael Doran For some time, Parks Victoria have said the Badger Weir Picnic Ground is scheduled to reopen to the public in March and the dedicated members of the Badger Creek Community Planning Group (BCCPG) are taking matters into their own hands to try to make that happen.

A group of 20 are spending Saturday 23 March putting the finishing touches to the Picnic Ground area in readiness to reopen and Doris Pozzi from the BCCPG said that they are responding to a request from Parks Victoria to lend a hand.

"They asked us to organise a group of 20 to help with the last stages of getting the park ready," she said. "Parks Victoria (PV) have done all of the big infrastructure work and we are mulching the garden beds, doing some pruning and cleaning up because that is not part of their budget allocation."

"We formed a relationship with PV and when their local person came out and talked to our group we found out why it was taking longer than we thought it would. One of the reasons was because they wanted to get more money to make some improvements that were not part of the repair work funding."

Doris said the community is incredibly enthusiastic to get this done and when the group posted that the park was opening in early 2019 their facebook page had 2000 likes, shares and comments, a clear indicator of the affection the community has for the park.

"There is something a bit special about this park and its closure has been a huge issue for a lot of people, many have been quite upset about it," she said. "I think it made it hard for local people to have a place to take their kids and go for picnics and evening walks as this place is visited constantly in the summer.

"For everybody, the degree of contact with the park very high and it's not like a day trip to the botanical gardens. It's almost like an extension of their backyard and for most that's how they see it, they expect to come here whenever they want to."

The Dandenong Ranges has been selected as the first battleground in a CSIRO-led fight to save rainforests across Australia from a devastating weed known as Wandering Trad.

Local community groups have been battling this invasion for many years and it was an excited group that gathered in Emerald on Friday 23 March to hear the good news.

The CSIRO has been involved in research on Wandering Trad biocontrol since 2014 and field biologist Dr Ben Gooden is coordinating the rollout of the biocontrol program across Australia.

He said that highly targeted and tested biocontrol agents are a more environmentally sustainable option than other available tools.

"Currently, the only tools available to the community and local councils against the weed are hand-pulling and chemical herbicides, which only bring short-term control and have the unintended consequence of killing native plants and disrupting complex rainforest ecosystems."

Speaking at the announcement, Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said that without the work of the community groups getting to this point would not have been possible.

"It's great to come along and be involved in the announcement considering how many years it has taken us to get here," he said. "For me this is one of those days I didn't think would ever come."

"Over the last five or six years I have pushed the federal government to put in over $6m supporting environment groups for weed control in the area and that's made a huge difference, but it needs science to come in and support that."

"The scientists at the CSIRO are so passionate and their tenacity is amazing," he said.

"Their attitude is that if you give us the funding we will dedicate our heart and souls to find the solution."

Bill Incoll is a committee member of the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs and said he had been looking forward to this day for years.

Road toll rescue

By Casey Neill Extra officers and new cars are bolstering the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol to tackle the rising road toll.

Sergeant Neil Campbell joined Sergeant Dave McIlfatrick at the Lilydale-based unit a few weeks ago.

They share more than 25 years' experience in highway patrol policing, and more new staff will be arriving shortly to strengthen the unit by 20 per cent overall.

Sgt Campbell has policed roads across Maroondah, Knox and most of the eastern suburbs and was most recently stationed at Mooroolbark.

"Some of the other crew members have been working here for 20 years," he said.

The unit has also received two new BMWs, the latest arriving on Friday 12 July.

Sgt Campbell told the Mail the vehicles were fitted with the latest technology, from speed measuring devices to drug and alcohol testing equipment, and on-board video and computer.

"It all means we'll be spending more time out on the road," he said.

"We'll be a lot more visible.

"Any person intercepted will be drug and alcohol tested.

"We'll be using all the latest technology to combat the road toll.

"This area is one of the highest in the state with road fatalities, which is the reason why we've been bolstered."

The Lilydale-based unit covers the entire Yarra Ranges, from Belgrave out to Healesville, Warburton and beyond.

"We'll be ramping up to target more drink and drug drivers, speeding, fatigue driving, distracted driving ... " Sgt Campbell said.

Community members are invited to attend the Emerald Museum Biennial General Meeting on 18 July 2019 to learn more about the museum, and join the committee.

Emerald Museum is a Cardinia Shire Council facility located within Nobelius Heritage Park.

Both the park and museum are cared for by a committee, which holds a biennial general meeting to elect members.

The Emerald Museum is full of fascinating items and records from Emerald and the surrounding district.

Managed by volunteers, the museum features more than 3,000 artefacts including household items, photographs, agricultural machinery and documents.

Pauline Murphy, President of the Emerald Museum said the museum had a wealth of knowledge about the beginnings of Emerald.

"There's a lot on local history and how Emerald began ... it goes back all the way to the gold mining days, and the timber days," Ms Murphy said.

"It's extremely interesting as you keep finding things out."

"Quite of range of volunteer roles and for people that are interested in local history it's a really wonderful place."

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Graeme Moore encouraged community members to attend the committee meeting to find out more about the facility and get involved.

Expected requirements of committee members include: attending regular committee meetings and participating in a rotating roster during museum open hours.

The meeting will take place from 7-9pm on Thursday 18 July.

Time to flex your thinking Increasingly, scientific evidence tells us that we can dramatically increase the probability of staying mentally and physically fit throughout our lives with physical exercise, good nutrition, social connection with others, and mental stimulation.

In straightforward terms, the phrase “use it or lose it“ can be applied to our muscles in our bodies as well as to neural pathways and connections in our brains. Scientists all over the world agree that the evidence is now overwhelming: mentally stimulating lives ‘boost brain power’.

Research found that people who participated in mentally stimulating activities, such as interactive games and dancing, four times

a week had a 65 to 75 per cent better probability of remaining sharp than those who did not participate in these activities. With strengthening, we increase our neural network’s capacity to face the effects of ageing or neurodegenerative diseases.

Tough conditions abound Monbulk Junior Football Club played on a cold, wet and wintry day.

Congratulations went to Gary Ross for 100 games, as well as 50 games milestone players.

A huge congratulations went to the players who represented the Hawks in the Junior Interleague squads over the holidays.

The undefeated Hawkettes had their first loss after a tough clash with Mount Evelyn.

They'll learn from their losses and fire up for the finals.

Under-9 Monbulk vs Wandin The team battled it out in very testing conditions.

Under-10 Monbulk vs Wandin Tough weather conditions tested the Hawks' resilience.

In addition, a big strong team put pressure on the side from the first quarter.

Strong tackling and great teamwork saw the Hawks play one of their better games.

Last year, Jason and his wife Bec took their van with four of their customers vans and did the Tanami Track, a heavily corrugated track between Alice Springs, NT, and Halls Creek, WA. The vans handled the conditions beautifully and also had the convenience of being able to use all their appliances including the airconditioner without being plugged into power or using a generator.

The vans were equipped with solar panels and inverters to utilise the sun's energy to charge the batteries, therefore power was not an issue.

Halen Vans also does all servicing and repairs of all makes and models of vans.

For anyone who needs an upgrade or has damaged their van, Halen Vans is happy to help out with a quotation or suggestions.

Halen Vans are builders of fully custom-built off-road caravans in Lilydale.

The company was established in 2011 when Jason Francis, after many years in the industry, together with two other partners, decided to go out on his own.

Jason, a mad Van Halen fan, decided that as a tribute to his idols the company name would have to be Halen Vans.

All Halen Vans are custom-built.

Halen Vans works with its customer to come up with a design that suits their individual needs and customers are fully involved with the build process.

From when the chassis arrives, customers go in and speak to qualified cabinet makers about their design needs and cabinetry is made to suit.

All vans are fully off-road with choices of independent trailing arm or air bag's suspension, the latter being popular due the fact that you can level the van from left to right and up and down with the flick of a switch.

They are fully self-sufficient with solar pan-
