"We had William's wake here, the footy club has done a whole lot for us." The Grace family received a frame of one of Will's jumpers and another one hangs up in the Woori Yallock Football Netball Club pavilion alongside the club's premiership flags, honour boards and other memorabilia.

Woori Yallock Junior Football Club under 16s honoured the life of Will Grace in their round 12 match against Seville on Sunday 14 July. Woori Yallock (19.19. 133) defeated Seville (1.2. 8) by 125 points, and Angus Hubbard was awarded the Will Grace Memorial Trophy by the Grace family for being judged the most courageous player. Will Grace lost his life at the age of 16 after travelling in the back of a ute which rolled over in Gladysdale in 2017. Woori Yallock players wore black armbands to honour Will and yellow armbands to acknowledge Road Trauma Support Services, a fitting tribute that matched the club colours of the Tigers. Will's parents Donna and Craig spoke to the Mail on 11 July, what would have been Will's 19th birthday. Ms Grace said that she celebrated Will's birthday by cooking some of his favourite foods for family and friends. Will was the fourth generation of the Grace family to have played for Woori Yallock over the years, but Donna and Craig find it difficult to come along to watch games now after their tragic loss. "For us it's hard to even come and watch. We'll get back into it eventually but at the moment it's not much fun for us to come and watch the footy like it used to be," Mr Grace said. Ms Grace said that they would still try and look for Will when she sees the team play. "His great-grandfather, his pop and his dad all played here, so this was his home, this is where he belongs," Ms Grace said. "William and his friends were the next generation coming through, so we would watch him enjoy the spirit of the club like we did." Mr Grace described Woori Yallock as a good family oriented club and Ms Grace said that some of Will's friends still reach out to his younger sister for support. "Will's mates that still play for the club are in contact with Amber and regularly check in on her to make sure she's going okay." Ms Grace went through training and is now a volunteer for Road Trauma Support Services, an organisation that contributes to the safety and wellbeing of road users and offers counselling and support.

Road toll rescue By Casey Neill Extra officers and new cars are bolstering the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol to tackle the rising road toll. Sergeant Neil Campbell joined Sergeant Dave McIlfatrick at the Lilydale-based unit a few weeks ago. They share more than 25 years' experience in highway patrol policing, and more new staff will be arriving shortly to strengthen the unit by 20 per cent overall. Sgt Campbell has policed roads across Maroondah, Knox and most of the eastern suburbs and was most recently stationed at Mooroolbark. "Some of the other crew members have been working here for 20 years," he said. The unit has also received two new BMWs, the latest arriving on Friday 12 July. Sgt Campbell told the Mail the vehicles were fitted with the latest technology, from speed measuring devices to drug and alcohol testing equipment, and on-board video and computer. "It all means we'll be spending more time out on the road," he said. "We'll be a lot more visible. "Any person intercepted will be drug and alcohol tested. "We'll be using all the latest technology to combat the road toll. "This area is one of the highest in the state with road fatalities, which is the reason why we've been bolstered." The Lilydale-based unit covers the entire Yarra Ranges, from Belgrave out to Healesville, Warburton and beyond. "We'll be ramping up to target more drink and drug drivers, speeding, fatigue driving, distracted driving ... " Sgt Campbell said. "All of those things are the reason why our figures are so high and our injury collisions are so high." The crew has heavy vehicles in its sights, not just cars. "And as the weather gets warmer, we'll be targeting motorcycles as well," he said.
Police are seeking witnesses to a car crash in Woori Yallock on Friday 12 July. Officers allege a silver Nissan Navara utility was travelling east along Warburton Highway when it swerved towards a purple Holden utility travelling west, near Woori Yallock Creek, about 9.50am. The Navara driver then conducted a Uturn, police said, and caught up to the Holden near Williams Crescent. There the Navara collided with the Holden, causing both vehicles to leave the road with extensive damage. A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was assisting police with their inquiries. The woman driving the Holden was uninjured. Detective Senior Constable Herbert from the Croydon Family Violence Investigations is seeking witnesses or footage of the incident. Alex Podolinsky’s life well celebrated By Jed Lanyon Powelltown resident Alexei (Alex) Sergei de Podolinsky passed away on 30 June aged 93. Born on 13 July 1925, Alex was a pioneer in biodynamic agriculture and the founded Biodynamic Marketing Company in 1981. Family and friends came together to celebrate the life of Alex on the Podolinsky farm in Powelltown on Tuesday 9 July. Alex was born in south west Germany and was forced to enlist in the German army in WWII, where he was used as a spy due to his ability to speak French. As a Ukrainian family, Alex and his twin sister Alika weren't safe in Germany and fled the country as refugees. Alex came to Australia on a migrant ship in

1949, while Alika travelled to Canada. Alex introduction to biodynamics was made through the work of Dr Rudolf Steiner in 1924.
In the 1950s Alex began the task of developing the biodynamic method, now known as the Australian professional biodynamic farming method as a fully effective, natural agricultural system for the modern age. Many biodynamic businesses offered their condolences through social media and to share how influential Alex had been to their own practices. Police charged a Lilydale man over a theft from a tradie's toolbox. They arrested the 42-year-old on 3 July following the alleged theft from a vehicle parked at the Crown Hotel in Lilydale between 7pm and 11.50pm on 22 June. Police said thieves took Makita and Paslode power tools from an unlocked toolbox on the ute. Yarra Ranges CIU Sergeant Mark Smithwick urged tradies to mark their tools with their driver's licence number, including batteries, to aid in their return should they ever be stolen. The Lilydale man was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates' Court on 19 September.
Police search for Peterson Police are appealing for public help to find Cameron Peterson. The 46-year-old is wanted on warrant for failing to appear at court. Peterson is described as 180 centimetres tall with a thin build and blue eyes. He is known to frequent the Knox and Yarra Glen areas. Investigators released an image of Peterson in the hope someone might have information on his whereabouts. Anyone who sees Peterson or has information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Gut health in children Functional abdominal pain affects up to 25 per cent of children and presents with multiple symptoms including constipation, diarrhoea, cramp, leg pain, poor appetite and nausea. It is distressing for children and equally concerning for parents. In cases where there is no serious pathology, natural medicine can be of great relief. Tummy pain is often multifaceted, complex and very individualised, yet a thorough and detailed assessment can yield great results. Take nutrient deficiency, for example.
This can be a common cause of muscle cramp and altered movement, resulting in constipation. Pain can also be caused by altered signalling systems in the body which are dependent on an array of nutrients to support physiological function. Low-grade inflammation can drive tummy pain and should be resolved. Deficiency of essential fatty acids, leaky gut syndrome and food sensitivity will all cause a degree of irritation and inflammation. These nutrients are not commonly assessed at primary care level but can be assessed. A common issue I treat frequently is parasitic infection. This causes nutrient depletion, poor appetite, pain, nausea and lethargy. Care needs to be exercised with treatment
but an experienced practitioner can clear parasites with highly specific herbal and probiotic strains. In extremely complex cases, functional pathology testing (which is more comprehensive than first-line GP testing and less invasive than scoping) can provide information on gut function throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. Realistically, the issue involves a combination of things that need to be assessed very carefully. Functional tummy pain in children can be distressing and affect their entire wellbeing. Parents are often at a loss on how to treat it, especially when serious illness has been ruled out, and yet a holistic approach taking into consideration the broad nature of tummy pain can yield excellent results.

DIY to the rescue By Michael Doran For some time, Parks Victoria have said the Badger Weir Picnic Ground is scheduled to reopen to the public in March and the dedicated members of the Badger Creek Community Planning Group (BCCPG) are taking matters into their own hands to try to make that happen. A group of 20 are spending Saturday 23 March putting the finishing touches to the Picnic Ground area in readiness to reopen and Doris Pozzi from the BCCPG said that they are responding to a request from Parks Victoria to lend a hand. "They asked us to organise a group of 20 to help with the last stages of getting the park ready," she said. "Parks Victoria (PV) have done all of the big infrastructure work and we are mulching the garden beds, doing some pruning and cleaning up because that is not part of their budget allocation." "We formed a relationship with PV and when their local person came out and talked to our group we found out why it was taking longer than we thought it would. One of the reasons was because they wanted to get more money to make some improvements that were not part of the repair work funding." Doris said the community is incredibly enthusiastic to get this done and when the group posted that the park was opening in early 2019 their facebook page had 2000 likes, shares and comments, a clear indicator of the affection the community has for the park. "There is something a bit special about this park and its closure has been a huge issue for a lot of people, many have been quite upset about it," she said. "I think it made it hard for local people to have a place to take their kids and go for picnics and evening walks as this place is visited constantly in the summer. "For everybody, the degree of contact with the park very high and it's not like a day trip to the botanical gardens. It's almost like an extension of their backyard and for most that's how they see it, they expect to come here whenever they want to." According to Doris, the closure would have been smoother if Parks Victoria had under-
stood the depth of feeling locals have for the park. "Really, all they needed to do was just com-
municate with us a bit more and I think if they had it would not have been as upsetting to the community as it has been."
On Wednesday 20 March Parks Victoria said in a statement "that it is not in a position to comment at this time."

The Dandenong Ranges has been selected as the first battleground in a CSIRO-led fight to save rainforests across Australia from a devastating weed known as Wandering Trad. Local community groups have been battling this invasion for many years and it was an excited group that gathered in Emerald on Friday 23 March to hear the good news. The CSIRO has been involved in research on Wandering Trad biocontrol since 2014 and field biologist Dr Ben Gooden is coordinating the rollout of the biocontrol program across Australia. He said that highly targeted and tested biocontrol agents are a more environmentally sustainable option than other available tools. "Currently, the only tools available to the community and local councils against the weed are hand-pulling and chemical herbicides, which only bring short-term control and have the unintended consequence of killing native plants and disrupting complex rainforest ecosystems." Speaking at the announcement, Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said that without the work of the community groups getting to this point would not have been possible. "It's great to come along and be involved in the announcement considering how many years it has taken us to get here," he said. "For me this is one of those days I didn't think would ever come." "Over the last five or six years I have pushed the federal government to put in over $6m supporting environment groups for weed control in the area and that's made a huge difference, but it needs science to come in and support that." "The scientists at the CSIRO are so passionate and their tenacity is amazing," he said. "Their attitude is that if you give us the funding we will dedicate our heart and souls to find the solution." Bill Incoll is a committee member of the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs and said he had been looking forward to this day for years.

Through this session, you can learn how a hot water tank can act like a battery to store solar electricity and how the cost of a new hot
water system can be covered over a few years by savings on energy bills. And you can find out about subsidies such as the state government's $1000 for replacing an existing electric hot water system with an energy efficient unit such as a heat pump and how Healesville CoRE's Solar Hot Water and Heat Pump Bulk Buy will save more money as purchase will be directly from the importer. Rollerskating at the library for school hols By Jed Lanyon Lilydale Community Library was transformed into a rollerskating rink on Thursday 11 July for some school holiday fun. Many kids took to the wooden floors of the library entrance to get a lesson in rollerblading from the Victorian Skating Centre in Lilydale. Kids were taught skating techniques such as how to slow down to come to a stop and how to get back up after a spill. Some kids took to the sport quickly, while others had a helping hand from a parent.
Buxton death A 59-year-old farm hand died while helping to fell trees on a property in Buxton. The worker was found unresponsive near a tree that had been pushed over by a tractor about 11am on Wednesday 10 July. The worker was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with head injuries but died soon after. WorkSafe is investigating the incident. The fatality brings the number of workplace deaths this year to 14, two more than at the same time last year.
Looking good Look Good Feel Better is celebrating 10 years of service at Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale. The Cancer Patients Foundation-run, free national community service program is dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related cancer treatment side-effects. The group workshops go through skincare techniques to address common side-effects like dryness and sun sensitivity; make-up tips to help correct and conceal redness, sallowness, pigmentation and dark circles as well as techniques for drawing on eyebrows; and advice on headwear including scarf styling and wig selection. Each participant receives a Confidence Kit full of donated skincare and make-up products from the cosmetic industry to use as tools for application throughout the workshop and for continued use in their own homes. Jo Mapes, the Yarra Ranges Health nursing director at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health, said the program was a highlight for the patients who attended. "Eastern Health is thrilled to host the Look Good Feel Better program and we would like to congratulate everyone at Yarra Ranges Health for their involvement over the last 10 years," she said. "This program has brought much joy to many of our patients, giving them an opportunity to feel their best and share the experience with others in a similar situation. "It has brought many smiles to the faces of those going through a very challenging time, and we would like to thank the Cancer Patients Foundation for their work with us over the last decade." The Cancer Patients Foundation's Victoria and Tasmania program manager, Faye Venning, attended Yarra Ranges Health on Wednesday 10 July to make a presentation to celebrate 10 years of service. Look Good Feel Better holds about 1000 workshops in 180 venues across Australia each year. To date, more than 130,000 people have participated in the program. The Mountain Views Mail notched up quite a milestone last week. The community newspaper's first edition was published on 11 July 1979. It was wonderful to see some lovely comments from our readers on our Facebook page - an opportunity for interaction I'm sure my predecessors on the publication would never have imagined possible. Just a few years ago I couldn't even have foreseen how social media would change the journalism landscape. Joyce told us that she still remembered the day the first paper was published and she was so happy to get a local paper. Lynda said that to her, the Mountain Views Mail meant "keeping the community connected and a piece of history". We'll be asking plenty more readers to share what the paper means to them ahead of our commemorative edition to mark the 40-year milestone, to be published on 30 July. We'll be asking 40 people, to be precise, and have also reached out to a number of people who've had strong connections to the paper over the years. We'll have messages from key local figures, former staff members and a few faces from that very first edition. Celebrating such an occasion is a wonderful thing to be a part of. It reminds me that I'm merely a custodian of a treasured piece of the community that existed long before I arrived at the editor's desk and will continue to serve this region long after I leave. The Mountain Bike Destination Project would increase bushfire risk, making Warburton a more dangerous place to live. The bulk of the projected 165,000 annual visitors would come over the summer months. Proposed trails on Mt Little Joe and Mt Tugwell and are in an area of extreme fire risk with
a long history of bushfires. It's a fact, acknowledged by DELWP, that large temporary populations increase the likelihood of ignitions and the challenges emergency services face during a fire. Over the past six weeks, our residents' association has sent several emails to Yarra Ranges Council about this. We wish to know what sort of increase in

fire risk the council considers acceptable. We have had no response. It is a pretty poor show when a council just ignores the concerns of its ratepayers, especially given the serious and potentially life threatening nature of this issue. Damien Flynn, Warburton

Footy talks By Jed Lanyon Healesville Junior Football Club partnered with Positive T Shirts to host the ‘Talk Out Loud’ round at Queens Park Oval on Sunday 14 July. For the third consecutive year, the club raised funds for youth organisation In2Life and players wore blue armbands to raise awareness about the growing issue of mental illness. The event ran all day alongside the club’s junior games and featured a barbecue, the Positive T Shirts stall, and an artist drawing cartoons and caricatures of people. Healesville Junior Football Club committee member and founder of Positive T Shirts Neil Milton explained why it is important for people to reach out for help. “We recognised that suicide in the Yarra Val-
ley is quite high and we’re trying to stop that. “As a committee we recognise that it’s really important to educate the kids about mateship, how important it is to look after our mates and to talking out loud.” “I’m hoping that people walk away with the feeling that it’s okay to talk about what’s going on in their life and to not keep it to themselves. “All the proceeds will be going towards preventing youth suicide. “People see the Positive logo or they see Talk Out Loud and they ask about it. Triple crown for Wandin’s Toastmaster general By Jed Lanyon Toastmaster area director Nola Sharp is celebrating a triple crown of awards over the past year. Ms Sharp's Toastmasters club in Wandin came close to being named the Toastmasters club of the year after being nominated for the award recently. Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. The organisation has more than 350,000 memberships spread over 16,000 clubs in 141 countries. Ms Sharp won a humorous speech contest trophy at district level (includes Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia), earned the award of Wandin's outstanding Toastmaster of the year and was named as a distinguished Toastmaster, the highest award a Toastmaster can earn. Ms Sharp said, "It came as such a wonderful surprise as I had failed twice before." She believes she could be the oldest person to win a speech contest trophy at 75 years old. "I've been a toastmaster for 12 years now. And in all that time I've been competing because it's something I enjoy." "It is a very safe place within our meetings... Everyone that is in that meeting wants a person to do well and is interested in what they have to say. "Everybody is unique and has a different

Taxpayers who have linked their myGov accounts to ATO online services will receive a message when their income statement is tax ready so that they know when to visit their trusted tax agent. "We know from previous years that the early birds who lodge in the first weeks of July are far more likely to make mistakes or submit incomplete data. That's why we suggest waiting and letting the ATO do most of the work prefilling your tax return," Ms Foat said. The ATO is also warning taxpayers with multiple jobs to take extra care. Those with more than one job should wait until all their employers have reported to the ATO or provided a payment summary. If taxpayers can't access their information via myGov or they lodge a paper return, they can contact the ATO on 13 28 61 for a copy of their income statement.

In a change from the usual process, taxpayers may not receive a payment summary directly from their employer this financial year. It's all thanks to improvements to reporting requirements at the ATO. The information, now referred to as an income statement, will continue to be pre-filled into people's income tax return or provided to their registered agent. Assistant Commissioner of the ATO, Karen Foat, said this was because many employers were now reporting wages, tax and super information to the ATO each payday. "Around nine million Australians will be able to see their year-to-date salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real time," Ms Foat said. "If you use a tax agent to lodge your return, you don't need to do anything. We provide your agent with this information and they can lodge your return as usual. "If you lodge your own return using myTax, this information will be pre-filled into your return. "Most employers have until 31 July 2019 to finalise their employees' income statements so, we strongly encourage taxpayers to wait a few weeks before lodging their tax return." THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something most people don't know about you? I was born in England. What classes did you teach before becoming principal? Many classes. My majors were physical education and accounting and I also taught mathematics, geography and outdoor education among many others. Looking back at when you first became principal, what advice would you have given yourself? Listen carefully when people are speaking with you. Try to understand from the other person's point of view before you commence putting your viewpoint. What has been your most memorable moment? The birth of my first child, equalled subsequently by the births of my other two children. What event, past or present or future would you like to witness? World peace would be good - no wars, fighting or terrorism. What subject did you enjoy at school? PE was always my favourite. I would have played sport all day, every day. I also very

I think I'm doing OK at being a dad so I might go with that. What encouraged you to become a teacher? Did you always want to become a principal? No, not at all - although now I am glad that I did take the first step and become an assistant principal. That was really an accident. There was a vacancy and the principal at the time asked me whether I would do the job for a short time - even then I took a few days before I said yes. Did you always want to become a teacher or was there another career you considered? Also, no. Being an AFL footballer was my ideal job and in fact, was all I wanted to do for a very long time. Back then football wasn't a full-time occupation and I wasn't ever good enough to get to the top level so a PE teacher was, I thought, the next best thing.

Murrindindi Shire Council has four outdoor aquatic facilities, located in Alexandra, Eildon, Marysville and Yea. We are seeking motivated individuals to work at these facilities from October 2019 until March 2020. Experience is not necessary, however Pool Lifeguard and Level 2 First Aid qualifications are essential. Full on-the-job training will be provided and there is the opportunity for ongoing work in future seasons. Minimum age to obtain Pool Lifeguard qualifications is 16 years. Pool Lifeguard and Level II First Aid must be obtained prior to the on-the-job training in early November. Facility Supervisor/Lifeguard This Casual position requires up to 30 hours per week ($35.71 per hour). Duties involve maintaining a safe environment for patrons and lifeguards, staff rosters, running training sessions, supervision of staff and maintenance of pool grounds and water quality. Excellent communication skills are required. Casual Lifeguards This Casual position has variable hours (ranging from 10-30 hours per week) (up to $34.31 per hour please note, the hourly rate will be lower if age of successful applicant is under 21 years). The league is calling on local clubs to tighten up how they enforce the rules regarding allowing pets into grounds. A post on the AFL Outer East Facebook page read, "We all love our pets, but crowded places are not the best for them." The post referred to a recent case of a young supporter being bitten by a dog at the football. An AFL Outer East spokesperson said that the rules are reliant on clubs manning their gates vigilantly, but more importantly on spectators respecting the rules and the rights of other patrons to feel comfortable whilst enjoying weekend sport.

Biggest thrill in racing to date for Garry further margin away in third. Even the cold, dismal weather couldn't wipe the smile off Garry's face. Another feature event on the program on Sunday was the 2019 Winter Cup. This event was won by Dyna Hunter, trained by Steven Collins at Pearcedale. He has shown a distinct liking for running up the straight in recent weeks and earned $5000 for his gallant effort along with a beautiful cup. In exciting news Healesville Greyhound Association, the club is now moving towards its National Sprint Championship event that will shine the spotlight on straight track racing across Australia. The grand final of this event carries a $35,000 winner's purse and Healesville Greyhound Association is very honoured to be holding the inaugural running of the event.

A cold wintry morning saw Healesville Social Golf Club (HSGC) members finish the first round of the Club Singles Championship. Greg Urquhart defeated Mitch Hay, Chris Handasyde defeated Ken Arnott and Craig Stewart won by walk over from Earl Louw. In the main stroke event, Chris Handasyde (6) came first with a score of 68, Karl Hradsky (17) second scoring 70, and Wayne Fenner (19) third with a score of 76. Chris Handasyde and Tom Carroll picked up two nearest the pins each.

Chum Creek greyhound trainer Garry Johnson, who prepares a small team of racers, had his most successful day as a trainer on Sunday 14 July at the Don Road track. Not only did Garry prepare the winner of the GRV Vic Bred Series Final, but he trained a winning double. His first winner was the well-credentialed Ryder Sir in race two. He had recently been racing at Sale and Warragul but returned to his home track and, drawn in the coveted red box, drove to the line to win convincingly giving Garry a good start to the day. Montey Jack was facing the starter in the GRV Vic Bred final, which offered $4000 to the winner. Beginning well, he avoided any interference and was very strong and pulled away from the other finalists to cross the line 2.25 lengths clear of Secret Package with Burning Express a
Warburton Golf Club played a Canadian-Foursomes competition on Wednesday 10 July. With Canadian-Foursomes the secret is teamwork, as with traditional foursomes. The pair who combined best on this day was Paul 'PK' Kennedy and Ken Barratt. Their nett score of 67.75 blew away all opposition, beating the next best score by four whole shots. That next-best nett, of 71.75, was not surprisingly achieved by the Garside brothers. A reliable source informed the club scribe that both brothers contributed evenly to their team effort. Players who scored 74.75 or better can claim a ball when next in the club house. Nearest the pins were won by Harrison Baxter on the third and Ray 'Happy' Gilmore on the fifth. On Saturday 13 July there was no competition due to electrical storms throughout the afternoon.

Norman shines out Harry Norman was the standout performer for Yarra Ranges Athletics at the Victoria 10km Road Race Championship on Sunday 14 July. In cold blustery conditions for the 1000plus athletes competing, Harry finished an outstanding 19th across the line in 30 minutes 34 seconds, enough to win the under-20 title. Harry was sensationally supported by Power Ranges team members James Laven and Max Savill-Bentley to again win the under-20 teams title, Laven finishing ninth in 33.50 and Savill-bentley 11th in 34.05.
