Dandenong marks 100th Dandenong High School celebrates an historic milestone this year, it's 100th anniversary.

Established in 1919, Dandenong High School is one of the oldest, largest and most culturally diverse secondary schools in the state.

The proud traditions of the school were forged early with the visionary leadership of the first headmaster, Mr P.C. Langford. He came to Dandenong not long after experiencing the devastation and upheavals of the Great War, establishing a school that engendered both discipline and hope. The school colours of dark blue, light blue and red were derived from those of his Regiment, the 4th Light Horse. He also chose the motto with care and it still resonates with students today - Faber Quisque Fortunae – Every man is the Architect of his own Destiny.

The 100th anniversary will be recognised with a series of events in the week of the centenary of the laying of the Foundation Stone, 21 November 1919.

On Thursday 21 November 2019 a school based ceremony will be held attend by leaders, staff, students, parents and special guests.

Neighbourhood learning The Community Connections Network Greater Dandenong consists of 6 neighbourhood houses from within the municipality.

Educational and vocational programmes are available with each of the houses being registered Learn Local organisations recognised by the Department of Education and offering pre accredited learning opportunities. Phone ban won’t work Ruby Eames spent a week at Star News Group on work experience. As a Year 10 student in a government high school, Ruby shares her thoughts on the State Government’s recently announced school phone ban.

My school already has rules in place which are almost the same as the phone ban across Victorian public schools to be enacted in 2020. I can say with absolute certainty that these rules will be ineffective in stopping students from using mobile phones on high school campuses.

Despite understanding why this new law has been introduced, and wholeheartedly agreeing with its introduction in primary schools, I believe that it will be unsuccessful in reducing distractions and disruptions in the classroom and in combating cyber bullying.

At my school mobile phones are not to be used by students from Year 7 to Year 10 on campus between the first bell and the last bell. They are supposed to be kept in lockers throughout the day, although it is somewhat of an open secret that practically every student keeps their device in their pocket instead.

I have been attending this school for almost four years and it’s almost shockingly easy to find a way around these rules.

At recess and lunchtime, the girls’ toilet blocks overflow with teenagers checking their social media accounts instead of actually going to the toilet. I can safely assume that the same is true for the boys’ toilets, although perhaps to a lesser extent. During classes, the days of conspicuously hiding a mobile phone beneath a desk are over. Instead, pupils hide their phones behind their school-required laptops and pretend to use the touchscreen function while texting their friends. In-between classes, students will crowd around their classmates to

hide them from passing teachers while they slip out their mobiles.

However, these students are not always using their phones for purposes irrelevant to their education. My school, along with many others in the state, uses a program called Compass which gives pupils access to timetables and alerts them to room changes or special activities replacing classes. In-between classes and at the end of recesses and lunchtimes, students often check their phones to see what classes they have next and if any changes have been made to their timetables. Yes students could check their timetables via their laptops, however it takes much longer to get them out, load the website and pack up than it does to simply use a phone app.

Hypothetically without mobile phones and subsequently no access to an updated timetable, both the number and frequency of students who are late to class could rise.

Nor will banning mobile phones rid classrooms of distractions. From my experience, laptops are the source of most distraction in the classroom, not mobile phones. While the school does have a system in place that blocks social media, online games and the like, any teenager with an in-depth knowledge of technology can easily bypass these systems and pass it on by word of mouth.

I admit that I am no stranger to procrastinating in class and most of my time spent distracting myself from schoolwork is on my laptop, not my phone. If the government wishes

to improve concentration in class, it will have to ban all technology.

I also think that we should not forget that school students were still distracted in class and caused disruptions before the invention of phones or computers. I’ve found that in classes where we don’t use technology as much, the class is typically noisier and far more restless than usual. For example, in my math classes most work is done in our books and by hand.

We are constantly scolded by our teacher for being too loud, talking while she’s speaking and socialising instead of working. Several years ago, a particularly restless classmate of mine got so bored in a math class that he threw a chair across the room. Whether technology is permitted in the classroom or not, the distractions and disruptions will remain regardless.

Nor do I think this new law will reduce cyber bullying. It is important to remember that it is not phones who bully people, but that it is people who bully people. While it can be argued that mobile phones give bullies a platform to harass others, ultimately, banning mobile phones will not stop the bullying. The bullying will either continue during school hours face-to-face or after school over social media and direct messaging services.

Despite the good intent behind the mobile phone ban, the inevitable ineffectiveness it has already been shown to have in a high school environment proves that a different route needs to be taken in order to achieve the law’s goals.

A similar treatment on Gladstone Road, Dandenong North was still attracting complaints, he said - though the council claims

that safety has improved without significantly increasing travel times.

"This whole line marking was done without community consultation and no consultation with the councilors," Cr Dark said.

"None of us were alerted or informed.

"There were very faint markings on the road, and the next thing you know this was put through."

A 'traffic calming' solution on Corrigan Road Noble Park has certainly got drivers feeling hot under the collar.

Greater Dandenong Council's on-road bicycle lanes between Cheltenham and Lightwood roads have put councilors at odds and distressed a mass of nearby residents.

According to the council, it aims to reduce excessive speeding and to create a safer space for cyclists and pedestrians.

Councillor Tim Dark has vowed to act against the "absolute mess". He will seek other councillors' support to remove the road's markings that have narrowed it into a singlelane each way.

In the other corner, mayor Roz Blades says the council is making a renewed effort to consult and educate residents on how to negotiate the road.

This includes a 'fact sheet' on the road rules involving on-road bicycle lanes, informing two local schools, and providing a 'hotline' to speak to council traffic engineers.

"I haven't discussed this with Tim and haven't seen any paperwork from him.

"I'm working through a process.

"I'm hopeful we can work together on this and we can get everyone's queries answered."

The council says an initial notification was mailed to more than 500 residents in the area.

It is now sending 2000 notices to a wider area.

Cr Blades says she has referred traffic engineers to address concerns by locals, who complain of more difficulties exiting their sidestreets onto Corrigan Road.

Residents have told Star News they expected the traffic jams to worsen when two nearby schools resume from holidays on 15 July.

They have also reported confusion among motorists as they suddenly merge from two lane intersections into one lane.

Many do not know that they can cross the solid white line into the bike lane to pass turning traffic or to enter and exit the road.

Resident Dawn Vernon said the bike lane, frequently interspersed with bus stops, car parking bays and left-turning lanes for cars, was unsafe.

"I would ask anyone who thinks that it is a good idea to ride a bike or even walk along that stretch of road."

Mario Troha said he'd lived in the area for more than 70 years, yet never seen a bike ridden on Corrigan Road. He doesn't expect to see many in the future.

"I spoke to cyclists who told me they wouldn't use it. A teenager on his bike said he'd just use the footpath."

Another resident Daryl Pittman said since the changes, it took him a record six-minutes to cross the road during the afternoon peak traffic.

The council has stated that prior to the markings, several crashes had occurred due to drivers being unclear whether the road was one or two lanes.

Cr Dark said the markings had spawned new confusion. He'd heard of two subsequent crashes, one involving a merging car at Simon Avenue on 8 July.

He'd been "absolutely bombarded" by resident complaints, he said.

NAIDOC brings us together

By Danielle Kutchel Hundreds of people have let their voices be heard at NAIDOC events around Greater Dandenong this week.

NAIDOC Week is celebrated annually in the first full week of July and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth.

Let’s work together for a shared future’.

In 2017, Greater Dandenong was home

to approximately 491 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents, and the Bunurong, Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung peoples are the traditional owners and custodians of the land on which the municipality sits.

A council-hosted local NAIDOC event on Tuesday July 9 saw around 450 people flock to Harmony Square to be part of the celebrations.

The Welcome to Country was performed by respected elder and proud Wurundjeri woman Aunty Pat Ockwell, and the Indigenous Hip

Hop Projects group and SOJU Gang DJ Skye Thomas entertained the crowd. Elsewhere, emergency services joined forces at the NAIDOC Week 2019 Children’s Day, held at Greaves Reserve.

Aboriginal cultural displays, activities and dancing were all part of the fun, allowing children to learn more about the world’s oldest living civilisation.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong’s community have moved fast and dug deep to help our overwhelmed charities.

It’s been two weeks since Star News reported on mayor Roz Blades’s public appeal for urgent donations to relieve the winter homeless and foodless crisis.

In that time, Springvale Benevolent Society - whose food stocks had run low - has been deluged with boxes of food.

“The phones stated ringing as soon as the story hit Facebook,” president Joe Rechichi said.

“I’d like to give a big thank you to all those who contributed to it.”

Among the donors was Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong, which presented $2000 as well as a load of groceries.

Bowens Hardware, which recently gave 50 blankets in June, presented a further $544 from a staff collection.

Individuals have given personal donations of up to $500, the Servants of Two Hearts rolled up with a load of food.

An 89-year-old man rang to say he never forgot how Mr Rechichi and the benevolent society helped his daughter 25 years ago. Repaying the good will, he gave out a load of groceries.

The donations have been swiftly converted into urgently-needed food parcels.

The aim is for blankets to keep people warm on the outside, food to keep them warm on the inside, Mr Rechichi says.

He tells of a woman who had recently been released from jail was sleeping on the floor of an empty flat.

The benevolent society whipped together two second-hand mattresses, linen, pillows, utensils and food.

Days later, it dropped off a just-donated bar fridge.

“You couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces.”

Mayor Roz Blades praised Greater Dandenong’s “generous and warm” community.

“I’m just glad to live in such a community.”

“We were at the point of nearly running out of funds,” spokesperson Rabi Gunaratnam said.

“This will keep us going until SeptemberOctober.”

The JWC is providing food relief to about 70 families, some with up to six children. Many of those are refugees and asylum seekers.

It also provides English language tuition, computer skills training and job assistance.

Like the benevolent society, the volunteerrun JWC does not receive government funding. Which means it relies solely on donations.

It also welcomes volunteers and donations.

In 2017 the City of Greater Dandenong adopted the Reconciliation Action Plan 2017-19, which promotes reconciliation in the Greater Dandenong community. The plan aims to work in partnership with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to improve the health and wellbeing, educational and employment outcomes of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, as well as promote social inclusion and engagement within the city.

Underpaying retailer fined A South-East fruit, vegetable and flowers retailer has been fined more than $240,000 for underpaying workers and falsifying employment records.

A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables Pty Ltd, which trades as Parkmore Fruit and Vege Market and Melbourne MarketPlace, was penalised $200,000 by the Federal Circuit Court for the breaches.

Company director Stephen Fanous and operations manager Etherah Louli were respectively fined $30,000 and $13,000.

The court found that three workers were underpaid $132,956 at a retail business in Chirnside shopping centre, and at floral businesses in Fountain Gate, Parkmore and Dandenong.

They were paid under minimum award entitlements for ordinary hours, penalty rates and overtime.

One of them worked 130 hour fortnights on average - at just $10 an hour after the first 76.

Another, aged 16, was paid $10 an hour for all hours worked.

Judge John O’Sullivan said determining the “substantial” underpayment amounts was difficult due to A & S’s false and misleading records.

He described the record-keeping breaches as the “gravest” of the contraventions.

“The [company]’s failure to make proper records, keep[ing of] false employment records and failure to make timely provision of accurate pay slips to the employees, undermines the utility and fundamental objectives of the [Fair Work] Act,“ Judge O’Sullivan said.

Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said the case sent a strong message to employers that unlawfully low flat rates would be detected.

“We have no tolerance for employers who think they can choose to pay workers a flat rate of pay that undercuts a worker’s minimum entitlements, or who try to hide it with unlawful ’off the books’ practices.“ The company rectified the underpayments in full following the start of court action. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Sleeping wife gets stabbed in the back

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who broke into a unit and stabbed his sleeping estranged wife in the back has been jailed.

The 35-year-old was sentenced in the Victorian County Court on 8 July on charges of aggravated burglary and intentionally causing injury.

He had been found guilty by a jury.

On the morning of 20 April 2017, the victim had fallen asleep after her night shift as a care worker. She and her two boys were staying with her sister and brother-in-law in a unit in the Greater Dandenong area at the time.

She woke to find a hand over her mouth and felt a “sharp pain” in her back - like a long fingernail, she stated to police.

She turned around to see her ex-husband holding a bloodied knife, while her blood pooled on the bed.

The stab wound penetrated into muscle.

Judge Susan Pullen said the victim, as calm-

ly as she could, told her attacker that it was all right. They should just go the hospital.

As they got out the front door, she ran to the refuge of a next-door neighbour and pleaded to be taken to Dandenong Hospital.

After surgery, she took more than two months off work.

Judge Pullen said it was likely that the accused had broken in through a kitchen window that couldn’t be locked.

The weapon was not recovered. It was likely to have been a knife missing from the kitchen’s knife block, Judge Pullen said.

At the time there was no intervention order against the man, no reports of previous violence and no criminal record.

Judge Pullen said the accused had not taken responsibility or shown insight into his action.

He may remain a risk to his wife and any future ex-partner, she said.

Domestic violence was not tolerated by the community, the judge said.

“To enter anyone’s home to assault them is

a very serious offence.”

Earlier that morning, the accused turned up in her bedroom trying to broker a reconciliation. After an argument, she told him to leave and walked him out the laundry door.

The Sikh ex-couple had immigrated from India in 2009. They were already wed by arranged-marriage.

While in Albany, the unemployed man left for Perth, effectively abandoning his family, Judge Pullen noted.

His wife and two sons moved to her sister’s unit in Melbourne.

Before the attack, she had told the man she was willing to reconcile if he found a job and suitable accommodation for the family.

The man was jailed by Judge Pullen for up to four-and-a-half-years, with a three-year non-parole period.

His term includes 808 days in pre-sentence custody.

Immigration authorities may subsequently cancel his permanent visa, the court heard.

Hero makes critical call as mum faints

By Cam Lucadou-Wells When his mother fainted on the kitchen floor one night, 10-year-old Asad's mind went into overdrive.

The Dandenong boy wondered if his Mum was still alive. Being raised by her alone, he thought about what might come for he and his two younger brothers Maisam and Zain.

But Asad still had the presence of mind to ring triple-0 for help.

For his actions on that night of 16 November, he was recently presented an Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) Triple Zero Hero award.

Listening back to the emergency call, his mother Masooma Salehi said she was struck by how Asad calmly recounted what happened.

"He told me later: Mum I was calm but I was so worried."

Under the operator's instructions he put his Mum into the recovery position and ensured she was breathing.

In those hectic moments, Asad couldn't recall the address. But the operator traced the call from his mother's mobile to their home.

While waiting for paramedics, he cared for his mother and comforted his siblings.

As Ms Salehi was taken to Dandenong Hospital, one of the paramedics stayed back to baby-sit the boys.

She was given treatment and the all-clear - though the cause of her fainting hasn't been uncovered.

Car torched near soccer club A car has been mysteriously torched soon after the driver was blocked-in near a Dandenong soccer ground.

Greater Dandenong CIU suspect, but hasn’t confirmed, that a Molotov cocktail may have destroyed the silver-grey Kia on the corner of Albert Street and Hammond Road in Dandenong.

The driver had stopped his car due to another vehicle pulling up directly in front of him about 7.50pm on Tuesday 2 July.

He fled from his car to seek help from a friend training at a nearby soccer club at Andrews Reserve.

When he returned a short time later, the car’s seats were extensively damaged by fire.

Squat homes up in flames A spate of abandoned squatter-homes have been suspiciously set alight, according to Dandenong police.

Fire crews were called out to the former Ambulance Victoria station on Stud Road about 8.43pm on Thursday 4 July.

They extinguished the blaze, which had spread into the ceiling.

Police believe that squatters had been living in the premises, with drug paraphernalia found inside.

A single garage and its contents at an abandoned unit in Pickett Street, Dandenong were destroyed in a fire reported just before 1am on Sunday 7 July.

Police are treating the fire at the reported squatter-property as suspicious.

A unit at an abandoned site at 35 Scott Street was destroyed on Monday 8 July. Fire crews attended at 11am to find a squatter with a lit-up steel drum in the unit's bedroom.

Fire officers extinguished the drum fire.

Three hours later, they re-attended finding the drum and an extensive part of the unit alight.

The place was littered with syringes, police say.

In March, Star News reported on neighbour complaints about the three-unit squat house on Scott Street.

Abandoned since October, unsightly piles of rubbish such as white-goods, mattresses, a cot and shopping trolleys had accumulated in the driveway and garages.

A complainant told Star News that the site was regularly visited by suspected drug dealers and users.

A female nursing her arm in a sling has been attacked and robbed near a Hallam milk bar, police say.

The robber approached her and asked for the time as she stood outside the milk bar about 5.45pm on 6 June.

As she looked down at her phone, he punched her injured arm, stole the phone and ran away.

Police have released a Facefit image of the alleged offender.

Mail thief close to death

Delay helps out rammer

A Dandenong driver who rammed a marked police car in Doveton has been ordered to repay Victoria Police more than $6000 in damages.

Police had observed Chantelle Sullivan, 28, driving at high speed in a stolen Toyota Echo from Prince Mark Hotel car park about 4.40am on 10 April 2018, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

During a winding journey, the car nearly struck a parked vehicle on the bend of McLennan and Theyer streets.

At that point, police activated emergency lights and pursued her at a fast speed, according to a police summary.

Sullivan quickly slammed on the brakes, forcing police to stop about two metres behind the car.

She reversed into the police car, causing it to jolt. The Echo drove away for about 20 metres, stopped in Stanis Street and Sullivan fled on foot with her two passengers.

Sullivan pleaded guilty to eight charges including stealing the Echo, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, evading police and unlicensed driving.

She was also charged with breaching a 12-month community corrections order imposed in December due to non-attendance.

At a sentencing hearing on 7 July, magistrate Tara Hartnett said it was "regrettable" that the April police pursuit charges were not dealt with in the December matter.

It may have resulted in a different sentence, she said.

"It's most concerning that in relation to this matter ... that the charges weren't brought until this year.

"She gets the benefit of that - as she should."

The court heard that Sullivan had struggled with homelessness, drug use and the "consequences of that lifestyle", including multiple court appearances.

Sullivan was sentenced to an 18-month CCO plus 42 days jail - including 41 days already spent in pre-sentence custody.

The order included 100 hours of unpaid work, as well as treatment, supervision and judicial monitoring.

Ms Hartnett said the focus of the order was 18 months of programs to "try to assist you not going back (to jail)".

"This offending I have to sentence you for today is incredibly serious," Ms Hartnett said.

"When you get out, you're going to have to make some serious and hard decisions about how you want to live your life."

Victoria Police successfully applied for a compensation order of $6163.10 for the damage to the police car.

Sullivan was also fined $500 and disqualified from driving for six months.

An ice-addict, who targeted scores of mailboxes as part of a stealing rampage, had nearly died from a heart attack due to his drug affliction, a court heard.

Wilfred Botin, of Malvern East, pleaded guilty to stealing mail, parcels, gift cards and credit cards out of letter boxes in July and August last year, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 9 July.

Over a matter of hours, he and his partner used a credit card stolen from a mailbox in Mentone to buy $360 of goods including massage parlour services, cigarettes, meat pies, sausage rolls, pasties, a TV antenna and a screwdriver set.

On another occasion, the pair set fire to a plastic bag of their unwanted loot including mail from Pakenham, Narre Warren, Mentone and Black Rock near Princes Highway, Nar Nar Goon.

Some of the destroyed pieces included a Victoria Police letter on a person's charges, a letter from the Department of Human Services and a gold coloured ring.

The CFA was called to extinguish the resulting small grassfire.

On 22 August, the pair stole a purse with three credit cards from a car parked in an Officer home's garage.

They stole an unlocked hire-car, parked

next to it with keys in its ignition.

They parked it nearby while they rifled through it for items. They drove off in their own car and used a stolen bank card to buy food from McDonald's in Dandenong.

Botin was on a community corrections order at the time of some of the offending.

A defence lawyer told the court that Botin had not re-offended since suffering a serious heart attack in February. The affliction was solely due to ice use.

"It couldn't be more clear to him that further use of drugs will result in his death," his defence lawyer said.

"There's no greater deterrent than that."

Since then, Botin had found rental accommodation, was financially stable and was set to embark on a nursing course, the court heard.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett said Botin was "so close to jail it's not funny" but his changed circumstances warranted some leniency.

"It's appalling offending and you've done plenty of it."

Botin's community corrections order was varied to a "longer-than-normal" 18 months.

It included 120 hours of unpaid work - 60 of which could be used for rehab and treatment.

"I think it's important that you remain under the supervision of the court," Ms Hartnett said.

Botin was disqualified from driving for six months.

Official kick-off for court Dandenong's new 'pop-up park' sports court has been opened with key safety features.

On 5 July, Youth Minister and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades unveiled the $600,000 court, which will host sports such as basketball, netball and futsal all year round.

The facility at the corner of Cadle and George streets is fitted with lighting and CCTV as safety features.

It replaces the temporary pop-up park opposite Dandenong railway station.

"Central Dandenong's new multi-sport community court will provide a place for local young people, residents and community

groups to enjoy the outdoors, be social and active," Ms Williams said.

Ms Williams said the court was part of Revitalising Central Dandenong breathing "new life into central Dandenong".

Cr Blades welcomed the investment from Development Victoria, the state's property development authority.

"The new park will provide the community with an opportunity to engage in a range of recreation activities, including basketball, netball and futsal."

The State Government contributed $500,000 and the council $100,000 to the park. Ace Landscape Services constructed the facility.

Traffic chaos remains

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Drivers are being mired in dangerous congestion just north-east of Springvale train station, Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly says.

Five years after the Springvale Road boom gates were removed, cars are banked up while trying to perform right-hand turns on Lightwood Avenue and Springvale Road at peak times.

In May, a driver was killed exiting Rosalie Street onto Springvale Road in a three-car crash in May. Cr O’Reilly said there was an urgent need for traffic lights, especially with the area being identified for high population growth.

“To drive north in peak hour, residents have no choice but to face ‘iron walls’ of traffic on Lightwood or Springvale Roads. There’s no easy way to make a right turn.”

“It is way overdue that something was done to fix the traffic design problems in this area.”

Cr O’Reilly highlighted the unsignalised Lindsay Williams bridge that is clogged with peak-time traffic trying to turn into Lightwood Road.

It was a design that was ticked off and modelled by VicRoads, but it has now handballed responsibility to Greater Dandenong Council.

In 2013, Springvale Asian Business Association had forecast this very situation - prior to the bridge’s opening.

“Once they open that intersection, there will be only chaos,” spokesperson Stan Chang said at the time.

“Once it has been created, it will be costly to fix. It will create a problem for the next 50-100 years.”

At the time VicRoads project director Andrew Williams said the bridge was developed through a “lengthy and rigorous design pro-

cess” with the project design team and Greater Dandenong Council.

According to its review, “traffic flow will be low; and even at the peak movements, traffic flow will be maintained as the peaks occur at different times of the day”.

Mr Williams also said independent road safety audits of the design found no safety issue, and traffic modelling up to 2046 showed traffic signals weren’t required at the intersections at either end of the bridge.

The Department of Transport - formerly VicRoads - told Star News on 11 July it is now not responsible for the Sandown Road and Lightwood Road intersections. It is managed by City of Greater Dandenong, it asserts.

On 10 July, the department also investigated the recent fatal crash site at Rosalie Street.

It found there was sufficient sight distance at the intersection, with a centre median allowing cars to make a staged right turn onto Springvale Road.

“We’ll continue to monitor the area to determine if any changes need to be made.”

On 8 July, Cr O’Reilly successfully moved for the council to lobby for State and Federal government funding to fix the problem.

The council will also conduct traffic surveys, growth forecasts and formulate possible options.

Unblock Springvale Action Group spokesperson Dyna Holl said there were “significant dangers” in entering and exiting off Sandown road.

“The constant bottleneck and increasing congestion will inevitably lead to a fatal accident on our roads if nothing is done.

“This is an ongoing frustration for our residents, nearby schools and businesses.

“We can’t wait until a serious accident happens - we need to act now to save lives on our roads.”

Holistic treatment for chronic pain Chronic pain affects one in five Australians and can often be debilitating, preventing people from living their lives comfortably and for some even making it impossible to engage in an active lifestyle or even find suitable employment.

Surprisingly, while it's possible to manage and reduce chronic pain in around 70-80 per cent of chronic pain sufferers, only 10 per cent of sufferers seek proper treatment for their condition.

Unlike many other conditions that are easily treated by a single health professional, the treatment of chronic pain requires a multidisciplinary approach, with best practice treatment often including a pain specialist, physiotherapist and a psychologist working together to reduce pain for the patient over the long term.

According to Dr John Monagle, an anaesthetist at St John of God Berwick Hospital who has a special interest in pain management, treatment from both a physiotherapist and psychologist can greatly benefit the management of chronic pain.

"In circumstances where patients have experienced pain over a long period of time, the body can sometimes start misinterpreting non-pain related signals as pain.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 17 July 1919 Peace Celebrations at Dandenong Attention is directed to the procession and sports display to be held at Dandenong on Peace Saturday.

The procession will start at 11am, from the Melbourne Hill, and will provide an imposing spectacle. In the afternoon there will be Purple Cross and sports displays in the showgrounds. On Sunday, the usual visit of inspecting by Dandenong Residents, the new bridge across the creek on the main road which has been the practice since the work was frist put in hand. The concrete walls are finished, and the iron girders are now in position, and span the stream.

Fear of vandalism at the fountain Councillors on Monday accepted the fact that the fountain to be erected in Dandenong Park will be subject to vandalism. But they would not vote in favour of changing its location to a "safe" place.

Discussion on its site at the intersection of Foster and Pultney Sts and its vulnerability and aesthetic qualities evoked a number of opinions from councillors. Cr A Gatley referred to it as a 'milestone' in the history of Dandenong, a forerunner of civic ideas such as the library and an art gallery. Cr Peter Wagstaff said he was at a loss to understand why council should conceive a thing of beauty and then put a fence around it. "If the object of the fence is to keep out vandals, we could be mistaken one hop, and they're over" he said.

20 years ago 19 July 1999 1.53m for grants Greater Dandenong council has awarded $1.53 million in grants for 175 community organisations. At a council meeting last Monday, council business manager Mr Michael Tonta said he received a "record" number of applicants. This year 446 organizations applied for $4 million. The mayor Councillor Naim Melhem, said the community grants program budget was the biggest of its kind in Victoria, representing 5% of the council's revenue.

5 years ago 21 July 2014 No parking here A lack of parking is discouraging private companies from relocation to central Dandenong says Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan. "We are doing a good job of getting more government offices and workers into central Dandenong" Cr Kirwan said at Monday's council meeting. "We have so far not succeeded in getting private companies to base their headquarters or branch offices in Dandenong." At the meeting , the council's Greater Dandenong Business group manager Paul Kearsley said it was expected "over time" that private companies would find central Dandenong a "prime" location but "we are up against it" competing with Box Hill and Frankston.

Rotary plans to reach out

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Local causes will be a special focus in the next 12 months, says Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong's new president Anthony Brown.

An example is the club's inaugural mental health forum to be held at Dandenong High School in August.

"It's a very important issue. We've recognized there's a need, and there's a lot of other deep-seated needs as well," Mr Brown said.

He told a changeover dinner at Sandhurst Club on 9 July, in which he was installed as the 2019-20 president, that the club would reinvigorate its youth projects.

The club was working with schools such as

Dandenong West Primary School, Dandenong High School and Lyndale Secondary College Worldwide, the Rotary theme of the year was "new generations", he said.

This indicated a "family-friendly" push to attract younger recruits by being more understanding of their circumstances. Many were time-poor and building their own careers, Mr Brown said.

At the same time, the club would be outward looking, open-minded and accepting of other people's views, he said.

It would continue to support great international programs such as the Sky Hydrant project that provided simple water filtration in Bhutan, polio eradication and fixing childrens'

facial deformities in Cambodia.

Mr Brown was born and raised in Dandenong. He had operated his dentistry in Dandenong for the past 32 years.

Outgoing president Phillip Thurgood said the club had donated $44,000 to a long list of international and local causes in the past 12 months.

It included Australian drought relief, Sky Hydrants in Bhutan, Dandenong High School scholarships, glaucoma and polio readication and the Springvale Benevolent Society.

Imitation is best flattery

By Mick Floyd 'Often Imitated' claimed her first group race title at Sandown Park last Thursday night, turning in a dazzling performance to defeat a stellar line up in the Group 2 McKenna Memorial.

Often Imitated settled into third behind favourite 'Neo Cleo' and 'Black Impala', before charging through a closing gap between the pair to take the lead through the first turn.

The margin grew to three lengths off the back straight but the favourite soon made her move. Chasing her fourth Sandown Park group win since April, Neo Cleo closed the gap to less than a length as the pair turned for home but Often Imitated kicked again, holding off Neo Cleo to score the win by a length. Her winning time of 33.92 slashed more than two lengths off Lady Toy’s race record.

“It was a terrific run because she didn’t

have it all her own way, she had to push her way through so it was really nice to see,” a very happy Jackie Greenough said after the run.

“I thought Neo Cleo might run her down but she (Neo Cleo) did her best and she couldn’t get her so I was very happy with that.”

Often Imitated burst onto the racing scene 12 months ago with her first city win coming in the maiden final on McKenna heats night last year. She built an impressive record through the second half of 2018 before coming on season early in the new year, and Greenough believes she has returned a much better greyhound, having won five times and been placed twice in eight starts since resuming, including impressive wins over the sprint trip.

“I actually spoke to Kel (Jackie’s husband, Kel Greenough) about this last night and he said she won’t run 700m so she’ll be sticking to the 600m,” Greenough said.

While full of praise for Often Imitated’s performance, Greenough was equally happy for owners Tyronne Whittington and Greg Sprod.

“It’s a thrill for them. They live for their dogs and they just get so excited when they race, they don’t care if it’s a Melbourne Cup or a maiden at Cranbourne - they’re just happy to win races,” she said.

The win was Often Imitated’s 13th victory from 25 career starts and the $40,000 winner’s cheque boosted her earnings beyond $110,000. It also completed a winning double for Greenough, with Ashley’s Entity leading all of the way to win race 2, continuing a remark-

able 2019 for Greenough who now has 22 wins for the year at the phenomenal strike rate of 61 per cent.

The Greenough greyhounds operation is a genuine family affair. In addition to her husband Kel, daughter Angela and grandson Bradley are also licensed trainers, and both were on hand to celebrate the victory.

The McKenna Memorial is named in honour of the club’s first secretary, Jack McKenna, and is one of the club’s longest running feature events having first been run in 1971.

Originally held over the stayer’s trip, the race became the club’s first feature event over the 595-metre distance and in the 10 years since, has been won by some of the sport’s biggest names including multiple group race winners 'Xylia Allen', 'Irma Bale', 'Out Of Range', 'Lady Toy' and 'Flash Of Light'.

Levi tames the Tasmanian Tiger - one punch at a time Doveton amateur boxing junior Levi Harrison continued his fine form with an interstate win over Tasmanian boxer Angus Barker during a Boxing Select match in the town of Penguin, Tasmania.

Harrison was picked to represent Regional Victoria Boxing in a cup tournament against Tasmania and the youngster did his state proud by defeating Barker over three two-minute rounds.

From the opening bell, Harrison set the pace, flying straight into the centre of the ring and landing a strong left jab.

The Tasmanian boxer moved away and countered with his own jab, but it was the tall Doveton boxer who had the most success, winning the first round by landing right hands through and over the guard of his opponent.

In the second round, Barker used counter punch tactics and his feet to move around Harrison with good effect, perhaps taking the second round with his more accurate punching.

Wilson was pleased about putting the exciting young boxer into the fray of his first interstate trip, saying Harrison has worked hard for this opportunity and it was a pleasure to see him develop.

It was only the inexperience of the Doveton boxer that he was not able to register a count or stoppage against the Tasmanian after connecting with strong solid right hand punches that visibly hurt his opponent.

Levi - who will be jetting off to New Zealand shortly for a massive chance to represent his state - relishes the hard work and competitiveness of the boxing caper.

“I pride myself on hard work and commitment so that I can be mentally and physically prepared to fight,“ he said recently.

“From now until we leave it is just hard work and building up the skill and fitness to be best prepared for the event.”

It was a strong performance from the Doveton boxing product, who looks to set to take on bigger and better things this season with some more confidence.

Not many athletes - young or old - can say they've won two national championships in consecutive years, but Dandenong Rangers young gun and Noble Park local Jerome Pierre once again proved himself on the biggest stage to lead Vic Metro to the Basketball Australia Under-16 Junior Championship.

Prior to the tournament, which was held in Darwin from 6-14 July, Pierre spoke about the hunger he had to bring back another gold medal for his state.

"Last year was a great experience and obviously winning it gave me that taste of what it's like and what it takes to get that gold medal," Pierre said.

"It's a new start this year though; obviously that was last year and we've got to do it for the state again and get the win."

After playing as a 14-year-old in 2018, Pierre returned to the squad this year and was selected to captain the state by his teammates.

It was an honour that he wore with pride, and throughout each and every game he led Vic Metro from the front.

He was simply sublime all tournament long.

His first outing as a Vic Metro captain was against Tasmania, and he was too big and too strong for his opponents. He finished the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

With that initial performance, Pierre set the tone for what was to come. His energy on both

ends of the court - whether that be diving for loose balls, grabbing key rebounds or making a splash with some sweet offence - was second to none as he took over games.

Vic Metro went through the pool rounds undefeated and Pierre piled up the points, rebounds and hustle plays. With it all on the line, his squad met South Australia Metro for a spot in the big dance.

With all Vic Metro players playing their role, Pierre included, the Vics got the job done, 74-60. Pierre finished just short of a doubledouble with nine points and nine rebounds in another dynamic showing.

That win set up a mouth-watering grand final clash against Vic Country on Saturday night.

The Metro boys proved to be far too good in the championship game as they wore down Country with rugged defence and an offensive game-plan that visibly accommodated the players' strengths.

With Pierre leading the way, Vic Metro claimed gold with a rousing 90-63 win over Vic Country. Pierre's impact on the game was profound as he made sure Vic Metro's defence was set and no easy baskets were scored. He finished the game with 15 points and an equal game-high 11 rebounds.

As the only returning member from last year's championship-winning squad, Pierre joined the very exclusive club of back-to-back national championship winners.

His poise on both ends of the court was extreme and, having spoken about wanting to

bring his leadership skills to the team prior to the tournament, there's no doubt he did just that.

"I hope to bring some leadership and just bring all my skills, talents and experience to the team to help us win this gold medal," he said.

"I obviously wasn't the captain last year and it was just good to learn and get the experience.

"Now I'm bringing that to this group of boys and to know that they look up to me like this and nominated me as captain is a great feeling.

"I look forward to leading and bringing my experience to the tournament."

He'd also talked about his desire to showcase his all-round game and his ability to play multiple positions. After doing plenty of scoring and rebounding, Pierre proved himself in that department too.

His agility allows him to match-up well against other centres, while his height makes him a match-up nightmare for forwards.

It's certainly been a whirlwind few years for Pierre, who only began playing basketball three years ago. With national championship medals around his neck, there's no doubt that his development since taking up the sport in 2016 has been phenomenal.

He credits Dandenong for having played a huge role in that growth.

"Dandenong Basketball has been very important for me - all coaches across my time there have been very helpful," he said.
