‘Utterly lawless’ A South East man who ran over a police officer in a stolen car and remained on the run for nearly two weeks has been jailed. Justin Evelyn's rampage included a number of burglaries, car thefts, and leading police on wild speed chases while on bail. The 37-year-old of Cranbourne pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 3 July to 44 charges, including conduct endangering persons, dangerous driving while pursued by police, criminal damage, and resisting an emergency worker. Evelyn's crime spree began when he stole a Hyundai Excel from the Seaford railway station carpark on 1 November, 2017, Judge Paul Higham said. He was bailed at Frankston Magistrates' Court on 6 November, 2017, to undergo a court integrated services program but the next day the court heard Evelyn drove his car at high speed as police tried to intercept him. That morning he burgled a cafe in Carrum Downs and broke into neighbouring storage units taking "anything of value," Judge Higham said. The court was told Evelyn rammed two police cars after being spotted in a stolen a BMW SUV at a McDonald's car park in the South East during the early hours of 10 November, 2017. An officer had attempted to remove the keys from the BMW, however Evelyn reversed into a police SUV - causing a police officer's leg to be "dragged under the vehicle" - before smashing into another police car two metres away and speeding off, Judge Higham said. Judge Higham said the incident had a profound impact on the injured officer who suffered anxiety, panic attacks, and trouble sleeping.

"He is currently seeing a psychologist in an attempt to deal with the trauma," Judge Higham said. The same day at 2.08pm Judge Higham said Evelyn led police in a chases while driving an unregistered Commodore in Tooradin, and again two days later where he reached speeds of 180km/h in Cribb Point and drove into oncoming traffic on the Western Port Highway. Using a stolen ute Eyelyn led police in another wild pursuit in Mornington on 13 November, 2017, while under the influence of methamphetamine. He rammed into a police car, and later crashed into a car before speeding off and abandoning the car at a shopping centre. Evelyn resisted arrest at the centre, forcing police to use capsicum spray, Judge Higham said. During a search of the ute, police found an extendable baton, a metal pole with a rubber handle, a knife, and two screwdrivers. Judge Higham told Evelyn suffered a difficult childhood where he witnessed domestic violence with his parents who separated when he was aged eight. He remained out of trouble from 2005 to 2013 but a relationship breakdown with his partner sent him "into a spiral of drug use." However, in sentencing Judge Higham described Evelyn's conduct as "utterly lawless". "You demonstrated a callous and brazen disregard for the safety of other road users and for the safety of police officers," Judge Higham said. "A firm message will go from this court to deter anyone contemplating such behaviour," he said. He was jailed for five years, nine months with a non-parole period of four years, six months.

How long have you been training at Casey Stadium?? I started training August 2018. What got you interested in martial arts? I wanted to build my confidence and learn strategies to be effective in threatening situations if needed. What would you say to anyone looking to take up martial arts and boosting their confidence? I am 66 years old and its never too late to take up any type of self defence/martial arts. It will strengthen your confidence and enable you to be aware of your surroundings. You will increase your fitness levels as well. For younger people its a great way to learn self defence and meet some wonderful people. What's something people don't know about you? My friends and family know I am an open book, but others probably don't know how passionate I am about photography and my local communities. I am a volunteer/committee member at a local hall and help with Remembrance Day and Anzac day. Which author would you like to drop in for a coffee and a chat? I really don't read books, as I can't sit still, but I do like autobiographies/biographies. Would love Anthony Hopkins to call in for a chat. What is your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Tasmania/Noosa. What is one travel destination you have never been to that you would love to see? South Africa. What is your favourite book and why? Not being much of a reader, but I did like A Long Way gone, by Ishmael Beah. It was the memoirs of a boy soldier. He got himself out of the struggles of being a child soldier and now a
human rights activist. At school I... Now that's a long time ago ... I guess I was the joker.
What's the best concert you have been to? Aerosmith. (being the only concert I have been to).

Stolen dog is back By Jed Lanyon An elderly couple has been reunited with their dog Millie after she was taken during a car theft in Blind Bight on Saturday 22 June. The 11-year-old Beagle was located in Montrose over 60 kilometres away from home on Tuesday 2 July and taken to Coldstream Animal Aid where she happily joined her owner Geoff Schmutter and Bev Barton again on Thursday 4 July. "I can't believe it ... it's been nearly two weeks now," Mr Schmutter said. "She means so much to me, we walk two or three times a day with her." Mr Schmutter said the incident occurred after momentarily leaving his car with the keys in the ignition while grabbing a newspaper. "Instead of walking, it was pouring with rain so we just drove the car down and I had left the keys in the car. "I was only two seconds flat and I had watched them drive away." After a week had passed, Mr Schmutter was unsure if he would ever see Millie again. The car was found in Bentleigh on 24 June, two days after being stolen but there was still no sign of Millie. "The car was a bit of a wreck, it's been through bush and everything, the bumper bar scratched really deep. It has scratches all over it and dints, it's been around. "She's just like one of my children, that's how it is."

Animal Aid Victoria's media and event manager Elle Ammann said that a member of the public had found Millie and brought her to Animal Aid. "She's been well kept over the last ten days, she's not dirty, doesn't have fleas and she's not skinny," she said. Mr Schmutter was thankful to see Millie in good condition.
Police are looking for a man and woman who may be able to help with their inquiries over an alleged theft of knives in Cranbourne on 26 June. Police allege the six knives, valued at $400, were stolen from Robin's Kitchen at Cranbourne Shopping Centre about 1.30pm. Investigators say the knives were concealed in a pram, which at the time was carrying a child. The duo was captured on CCTV. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

A drug affected man has been lurking around a cafe at a Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and security has not dealt with the problem, staff say. The manager of the family-run cafe, Fadi Dahou, said the man often harassed customers for money. Customers were also leaving the cafe midway through their meals as they felt uncomfortable, he said. The man is described as Caucasion, 190cm tall, slim build, beard, and generally wore a hoodie and jeans. Mr Daho, who did not wish to publish the name of his cafe, said security were failing to keep the area safe. He said he contacted the centre security about the matter only to be emailed with a reply stating: "If you see something, call us." "Security just speak to him but doesn't leave." Mr Dahou said he would contact police the next time the man entered the cafe. A Scentre Group spokesperson said the safety and security of their customers, retail partners and employees was always the centre's priority.

A Clyde pharmacist and her husband are united in tackling the gruelling Kokoda trail in July to raise money for the Ovarian Cancer Australia. Carolyn Wynen of Narre Warren South will join her husband Paul and a group of pharmacists and support members from around the country in taking on the mammoth task of hiking the 96km track over eight days. The group of 12 trekkers have been training for about 18 weeks, following a stringent fitness guide needed for the challenging trek which is known for its steep and muddy terrain as well as reaching heights of up to 2,490 metres. Ms Wynen, who is the co-proprietor of TerryWhite Chemmart Pharmacy in Clyde, said her team had raised $4,000. The trekkers have also raised $14,451.55 through an online fundraiser with every dollar going towards OCA. Three weeks out from the trek, Ms Wyen says she was feeling nervous but excited and keen to "see just how tough 'bloody tough' is." "I have been combining cardio and strength training sessions with a weekly Pilate's session along with increasing sets of 100 squats, stepups and sit-ups," she said. "We have also been incorporating a weekly pack hike that has ranged from two to six hours on trails such as 1000 steps to Olinda, Glasgow

New president for Rotary By Danielle Kutchel Garry Luxford has taken the reigns at the Rotary Club of Cranbourne, in a ceremony that celebrated the past year and looked forward to new projects over the next twelve months. On Friday June 21, Rotarians from Cranbourne and beyond, as well as friends of the Rotary Club, converged on Settlers Run Golf and Country Club in Botanic Ridge to see Mr Luxford take over from past president Marcel Hendriksen.
Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon was also in attendance. MC Lloma Shaw kept guests entertained with magic maths in between the formal proceedings. During the event, the Paul Harris Fellow Award was presented to Drew Gormlie, Founder and CEO of Life! Central Services and project leader of L'Arte Central. L'Arte is a social enterprise cafe, transitional employer and art gallery which will provide second chances for people who have suffered severe and enduring mental health challenges.
"Our goal is to transform lives and help people that just need a little bit of support in certain areas so they can reintegrate into the community and get back to where they know they're meant to be," Gormlie explained in a speech on the night, receiving rapturous applause for his work. Outgoing president Marcel Hendriksen acknowledged that he had overseen a year of busyness for Rotary, including numerous barbecues, the annual debutante ball, a golf day and support for the bushfire-ravaged community at Tonimbuk.
"I welcome Garry Luxford as our incoming president for 2019/2020. I know that Garry has a complete program lined up for the coming year - we will be in good hands," he told the room. "Garry, this is the second time that you've followed me as president. Last time you did us proud, and I'm sure you'll do us proud again." After being presented with the chain of office, Mr Luxford took to the podium to officially thank the Club for its support. Wally is safe By Brendan Rees A rescue dog who wandered away for eight days after being spooked by another dog has been found safe in Hampton Park. Wally, a two-year-old Chinese Crested dog, was reunited with his owners on Friday evening, 5 July following a frantic search. Foster carers Siobhan and Tina lost their beloved hairless pooch after he was spooked by another dog on Warana Drive on 26 June, causing him to slip from his harness and bolt in fear. Laura Barrett of No Hairs Ark Chinese Crested Rescue said Wally was "incredibly lucky" to be found at The Grange, Hampton Park given he was on medication and had experienced
some cold nights. "He was running in the opposite direction and recognised the voice, and turned around and ran straight towards the foster carer," she said. "He was found about a kilometre and half away from his home. "He is all OK. He is a bit skinny but he went to the Vet straight away and had some IV fluids and everything like and he was all good in the end." Despite initial sightings of Wally in the Hallam wetlands, a line search would have required hundreds of people, Ms Barrett said, which would have forced Wally to run "further and harder."

Chosen from thousands of kids who auditioned, the pair made the first cut and will take on 11 other teams from around Australia and New Zealand in Nickelodeon Australia's kids' reality television series, Slime Cup. Dubbed the 'thunder mates,' the duo wore their DIY costumes celebrating their favourite Nickelodeon program The Thundermans. The boys will tackle a SpongeBob Square Pants inspired course, as a nod to Nickelodeon's nautical world underwater with hopes of making it to the finals in their quest to take out the Slim Cup title. "It was a huge surprise ... It's crazy because I've watched the show in previous years and never thought I'd be on it!" Latrelle said. Malakai said they both felt nervous but were confident they would support each other. "The best part about participating in Slime Cup was meeting all the other teams and competing in the Slime Arena. It was so much fun

By Brendan Rees Customers were evacuated from an Aldi supermarket in Cranbourne after a suspicious backpack was found abandoned in the trolley bay on Tuesday 9 July. Police were called to Cranbourne-Frankston Road about 12.30pm following reports a suspicious item had been found, police say. The bomb squad was called in and as a precaution, and the store was evacuated and an exclusion zone created around Codrington Street and Bakewell Street, police said. Police confirmed the area was deemed safe and there was no threat to public safety. The store’s deputy manager Kelsey Barrett said the backpack was found with wires sticking out it in an empty trolley outside.

Council spending needs review I have to agree with John Glazebrook, Endeavour hills, Peter Giles, Cranbourne, and R. Foxwell, Cranbourne East who had letters printed in the Herald sun on the 3 July 2019 about Casey Council spending money on Bunjil Place and going on junket trips to China. When did the council last clean out the storm drains? Every time it rains heavy, Pound Road is partly flooded near the creek bridge. The farm owner's mother Winsome Anderson said litter got caught in the barb wire of the boundary fence which was "absolutely shredding into little hand size pieces" and blowing

The putrid smell of the Hampton Park tip has again put noses out of joint with residents. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has been called back in to investigate the Hallam Road landfill site as it responds to neighbours' complaints of bad stench. "EPA is also planning detailed site investigations over the coming days," EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said. "As the matter is now subject of an investigation EPA is limited with what information it can share with the public to ensure due process and procedural fairness. "EPA sets and enforces strict licence conditions and expects them to be adhered with to ensure public amenity," Ms Mathias said. It comes after the operator of the landfill site, Suez Recycling and Recovery, was fined nearly $8000 by the EPA in September last year for the escape of odour outside its landfill boundaries. At their 2 July meeting, Casey councillors voted calling for an urgent meeting with the EPA and Suez to discuss remedial action and ways to mitigate the odour. Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon told councillors residents were "really up in arms" as they were "experiencing great discomfort with odour." "This is way beyond what they would expect to be reasonable," she said. Cr Stapledon said she didn't want to discredit Suez as they were "doing a great job" but added: "We need to look after our residents at the same time." Suez Victoria infrastructure manager Andrew Carson said workers had recently placed engineered plastic and clay lining "to encapsulate the waste as well as capture the gas that it is generated" in accordance to their licenced conditions from the City of Casey and the EPA.

Family pleads for phone’s return By Brendan Rees
A Hampton Park tradie has been left devastated after gutless thieves allegedly stole a dropsaw worth $3,000 from his ute - less than hour of it being purchased. Carpenter Steven Archer said he had just bought the drop-saw from Sydney Tools in Pakenham which he packed in the back of his ute about 5.30pm on Sunday 30 June. While driving home he parked at the front of Yo My Goodness on Clyde Road in Berwick with the drop-saw hidden between two big tool boxes. "I backed up to a bush so no one could really see anything," he said. "It was right up at the front of the door so I thought 'this should be fine'." Ten years of global friendship City of Casey councillors were joined by community members in Cranbourne East to celebrate 10 years since the establishment of the Wall of Global Friendships (WOGF). The local icon acknowledges Casey’s rich cultural diversity and features a collection of inscribed plaques from local community groups that are committed to promoting mutual respect, friendship and goodwill. Located at the Balla Balla Community Centre, the wall now has 23 community plaques following the addition of three more at the celebration on Saturday 29 June. Casey mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said she was thrilled to celebrate the occasion following the establishment of the wall in 2009, and acknowledged the late Salah Parker, who was integral in the fruition of the project. “Casey’s Global Friendships Committee came up with the idea of establishing a Wall of Global Friendships back in 2007,” she said. “Over the next two years, a working group of enthusiastic community volunteers, including members of the Balla Balla Centre Steering Committee and Council’s Access and Inclusions Advisory Committee, met regularly with Council officers and then in December 2009

"I was thinking someone actually watched load it up at the tool shop and then followed me to where I was going," he said. "If it was a cheap and nasty one I wouldn't have been too phased ... It's pretty much the best drop saw you can get. "As soon as I noticed it was missing I had quick look around," he said. Mr Archer said he immediately checked with staff for any CCTV footage. "They reviewed it and they said the camera couldn't see my car," he said. Mr Archer said he was shocked by the brazen theft: "All you could see was the handle of the cream coloured trolley so you couldn't see the drop saw itself." The drop-saw is a Festool Kapex 120 model.

A distraught Cranbourne family is desperate for the return of a mobile phone that contains precious photos of their father who died recently. Ryan Stokes says his mother in-law had left her Samsung Galaxy S9 on a seat outside Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre while waiting for a taxi between 3.30pm and 4pm on Monday 1 July. He said the phone contained "irreplaceable photos and memories" of his father-in-law, including contacts needed to organise the funeral. "We just need the phone back," he pleaded on social media. He urged anyone who found the phone, which has a green flip cover, to contact Cranbourne Police. "There's not going to be any charges laid if I get the phone back in one piece and everything is still on it. "They can have the phone back. I don't care ... we just need the phone back." He said his mother-in-law had insured the phone which she has since replaced. Mr Stokes, who is in the process of checking CCTV at the centre, says he wasn't confident of the phone's return. "I don't care about they've taken it; I just need all the content on it," he said. He added he had been overwhelmed with

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is advising taxpayers that improvements to reporting requirements mean that some people may not receive a payment summary directly from their employer this financial year. This information, now referred to as an income statement, will continue to be pre-filled into people’s income tax return or provided to their registered agent. Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said this was because many employers were now reporting wages, tax and super information to the ATO each payday. “Around nine million Australians will be able to see their year-to-date salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real time,” Ms Foat said. “If you use a tax agent to lodge your return, you don’t need to do anything. We provide your agent with this information and they can lodge your return as usual. "If you lodge your own return using myTax, this information will be pre-filled into your return. “Most employers have until 31 July 2019 to finalise their employees’ income statements so, we strongly encourage taxpayers to wait a few weeks before lodging their tax return.” This also provides longer for other information such as from banks, health funds and government agencies to be pre-filled in your return as well, making the whole process easier. “If you lodge your tax return before your income statement is tax ready, your employer might make changes, and you may need to lodge an amendment. In some cases, additional tax and interest may be payable,” Ms Foat said. Taxpayers who have linked their myGov accounts to ATO online services will receive a message when their income statement is tax ready, for agents this information will be available in pre-fill reports. “We know from previous years that the early birds who lodge in the first weeks of July are far more likely to make mistakes or submit incomplete data. That’s why we suggest waiting and letting the ATO do most of the work prefilling your tax return,” Ms Foat said. The ATO is also warning taxpayers with multiple jobs to take extra care. Those with more than one job should wait until all their employers have reported to the ATO or provided a payment summary. If you can’t access your information via myGov or you lodge a paper return, you can contact us on 13 28 61 for a copy of your income statement.

Cranbourne Gardens presentation Professor Peter Betts will provide a 50-minute presentation on the 'The Earth Moves in Mysterious Ways' on his journey from plumber's son in East Gippsland to becoming an academic geologist, and why Earth Sciences are significant for society. He will illustrate how Earth Scientists image the Earth today and what this information tells us about our planet. He will finish with a short synopsis of the dynamic geology that we stand on here in Melbourne. Peter Betts is a Professor of Tectonics from the School of Earth Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University. The conductor of The Fenix Chorale Inc. is looking at retirement in the not so distant future and is seeking a deputy to start to assist at the moment and eventually take over. The choir sings four part works; anything from light opera to modern songs. The 30 members are senior citizens and practices are held at Woodlands Retirement Village, 72 Kangan Drive, Berwick in the auditorium, on the first, second and third Wednesday afternoons of the month from 2.30 - 3.45pm. Several concerts are held during the year at villages and churches in the local area. Halejian puts on a real masterclass By Hayley Wildes There were plenty of Casey highlights in Round 15 of Big V basketball action, but the Championship women finally breaking through for a win after nine successive losses takes the cake. It's been a tough season for the Championship women, but on Saturday night they defeated the Bulleen Boomers at home, 82-69. The star of the show was Sarah Halejian who recorded an extraordinary triple-double. She was involved in everything and singlehandedly made sure the Cavs got home. Her final stat line of 22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists is one of the best Big V performances by anyone this season. Toccara Ross (21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists) and Megan Craig (16 points and 9 rebounds) were also vital. The win sees the Cavs improve to 5-10 on the season to sit in seventh position. The Championship men took care of business against Corio Bay on the road on Saturday night, before falling to the Hawthorn Magic at home on Sunday. Superstar Raheem Lemons led the way on Saturday night against the Stingrays, recording an efficient 29 points (12/16 FG), 13 rebounds and 3 assists, while Brandon Polk (13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists) was also vital in helping the Cavs claim a 107-76 win. The next day, Casey couldn't get the job done against the Magic as they lost 83-70. Despite the loss, Lemons (15 points and 7 rebounds) was again in fine form. With a 1-1 weekend, the Cavs sit fourth with a 13-7 record. The juggernaut that is the Youth League 1 women once again trounced their opponents, this time smashing Corio Bay by 61 points, 120-59. The team shot an efficient 54 per cent from the field on their way to the big win and one of the more incredible quarters of basketball occurred in the second term. The Cavs absolutely blew the Stingrays away with a dominant 41-4 second term that had to be seen to be believed. Lauren Tuplin (30 points) continued her stellar season, while Peta Rhodes (25 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists) was in the thick of the action. Riding an 11-game winning streak, the Cavs sit on top of the ladder with a 14-2 record. The Youth League 2 men grabbed two important wins over the weekend. On Saturday night they travelled to Bendigo and defeated the Braves, 72-56. Blake Taylor (15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists) top-scored for Casey. Backing up the next day, the Cavs were too good for Altona at home as Corey Roos (25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) dominated from start to finish to lead Casey to a 93-82 win. Boasting a 14-7 record, the Cavs sit fourth. Looking ahead to Round 16, all teams hit the road in an important weekend. On Saturday night, the Championship men face Chel-
Munro leads Casey home By Hayley Wildes Courtesy of a stirring second-half performance, the Casey Demons overcame a slow start against the Northern Blues at Casey Fields on Saturday to record an impressive and important comeback win. The Blues took their chances in the first half and the Demons didn’t; and that was the difference. Trailing by 13 points at the main break, 8.3 (51) to 5.8 (38), Casey had to dig deep and with stand-in skipper Jimmy Munro leading the way, the Demons turned that 13-point deficit into a three-point advantage at the final break. With everything to play for as both teams battle for their finals lives, it was Casey that stood up. With the game on the line, Toby Bedford slotted the opening goal of the fourth term to give the Demons some breathing room, but the Blues responded and when Casey kept peppering the goals and missing, Northern kept their noses in the game. With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Demons led by four points. That lead was built upon when Liam Wale-Buxton slotted a major to give Casey a 13-point lead. Once again, Northern answered the challenge with a major but Casey’s skipper stood up at the death. Munro topped off his stellar game as captain with a magnificent running goal from 50 metres out with just minutes left on the clock. The team got around him and the crowd stood as the Demons finally took care of the Blues after dominating play for much of the game. Casey claimed a 13-point win, 11.19 (85) to 11.6 (72). The win - its fourth on the trot keeps the Demons alive in the finals hunt. After 14 rounds, the Demons sit ninth with a 6-6 record; equal on points with Werribee and Geelong in seventh and eighth, respectively. Jimmy Munro (25 disposals and two goals), James Jordon and Corey Maynard (25 disposals each) were all sublime around the contest, while Josh Wagner (23 disposals) and Jake Lever played vital roles. Despite the tight scoreline, the Demons were the better team on the day and had they kicked straight in front of goal, the margin would’ve better reflected their dominance. The race for finals heats up again on Sunday with Casey taking on third-placed Footscray from 11.50am at Marvel Stadium. The game is a curtain-raiser to the AFL clash between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs and it should be a great battle between two teams desperate to keep winning as the business end of the season nears closer.

Stingrays are blown away by Cannons By Hayley Wildes It’s certainly been a struggle for the Dandenong Stingrays in recent weeks. With so many of their stars missing due to Vic Country commitments, the Rays have lost their last four games, including a loss to the Calder Cannons on Saturday. It was one-way traffic in the first half as the Cannons took control of the game with slick ball movement and great forward 50 entries. At the main break, Calder held a 45-point lead, 9.3 (57) to 2.0 (12). After a tough first half in which Dandenong struggled to get its hands on the ball, the Stingrays came out with a renewed sense of urgency and confidence in the third quarter. trimmed the lead to 29 points at the final break after booting three goals to one in the term. The signs were encouraging heading into the final term, but the Stingrays couldn’t keep up as the Cannons blew the game apart with seven goals to zero in a dominant finish to the game. Despite the disappointing result, Jack Toner (28 disposals), Lachlan Williams (23 disposals and five tackles), Reece Orchard (14 disposals and 13 tackles), Ashton Williamson (three goals and five tackles) and Max Gregory (15 disposals and five tackles) gave their all for Dandenong. The Stingrays fall to 6-4 on the season and sit seventh on the ladder. While the last four rounds have been tough for Dandenong, it isn’t all doom and gloom as for the final four
rounds of the season the Stingrays should have a full squad to pick from as the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships are now complete. Unfortunately for the Stingrays’ Vic Country representatives, the team fell agonisingly short of winning the Championships as Western Australia claimed the trophy with a last-kick, five-point win over Vic Country last Wednesday at Marvel Stadium. Highlighting the talent the Stingrays possess, Hayden Young, Sam De Koning and Cody Weightman were all selected in the 2019 Under-18 All Australian team after great showings throughout the carnival. After a league-wide bye this weekend, Dandenong returns to action on Sunday 21 July. They face the Sandringham Dragons on the road from 9.30am. A win could see them jump back up to fifth position.

Fev buries the Panthers By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA ROUND 13 With former AFL superstar Brendan Fevola lining up for Hastings, Devon Meadows fell behind in the second and third quarters and despite a strong last quarter - was never in the contest at Glover Reserve. The Blues slammed on nine goals to one in the middle two quarters as Fevola (nine goals) put on a show for the locals in what was an entertaining spectacle for the big crowd. The Panthers put through five goals in the final term, but it was too little too late as the Blues ran out 42-point winners, 15.16 (106) to 9.10 (64). Simon Hallsworth and Chase Harris were best for Devon Meadows. Rye was a class above Pearcedale as the Demons recorded a cruisy win, despite inaccuracy in front of goal. Had Rye found its range in the forward 50, the scoreline would've read much worse than 10.22 (82) to 7.2 (44). Travis Bravo (three goals) and Trent Robertson battled hard all day for the Panthers. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 12 The Burras waltzed into Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve and completely blew Skye away. After leading by just 12 points at the first break, Keysborough put the foot down in the second term with nine unanswered goals in a brutal display. They weren't done though as they continued to pile on the pain, particularly in the final term. A mammoth 13-goal to one fourth quarter saw the Burras run out with a percentageboosting 152-point win, 31.7 (193) to 5.11 (41). Incredibly, Keysborough slammed on
26 goals to three after quarter time as Chris Bryan, Tim Edwards (eight goals each) and Matthew Carnelley (five goals) put on a masterclass up forward, while Bryce Sutton dominated around the contest. With the win, the Burras now boast a ridiculous percentage of 234.17 after 12 rounds. The Doveton Eagles kicked eight goals to one in the first half against East Brighton and despite an even second half, ran out massive winners, 17.11 (113) to 8.9 (57). Jarrod O'Neill (nine goals) was an absolute force up forward as the East Brighton defence simply couldn't keep up, while Cory Wilson (three goals) was also dominant. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 12 Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills played out an intriguing clash at Barry Simon Reserve. The Redbacks took control of the game in the second quarter with a five-goal to one term and held a 24-point half time lead, 8.2 (50) to 4.2 (26). To the Falcons' credit, they didn't go away and kept fighting to stay in the contest. If not for their inaccuracy in front of goal, the Falcons could've been much closer than the 13-point three quarter time deficit. In a back and forth final term, the Redbacks - led by Reece Smart and Travis Davis (four goals) - kept the Falcons at bay to record a 13.6 (84) to 11.7 (73) win. Ben Graham and Sam Delosa (two goals) were best Endeavour Hills. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 12 Frankston dominated from start to finish against Lyndale and with Lachlan Fielding (seven goals) and Josh Kerrigan (four goals) running amok up forward, the Pumas' defence was under severe pressure all day. A nine-goal to two first term set up the win and the Dolphins went on to win by 111 points, 21.17 (143) to 4.8 (32). Michael Robinson (two
goals) was best for Lyndale. Trailing by 21 points at the final change, Hallam almost pulled off a comeback win against Moorabbin but fell agonisingly short. The story of the game was goal-kicking as the Roos took their chances and the Hawks didn't, which led to Moorabbin recording a 12.2 (74) to 9.15 (69) win. Rory McIvor and Dean Webb were best for Hallam. Lyndhurst made light work of Carrum Patterson Lakes in a win that was set up by an eight-goal to one first term. The Lightning continued its demolition in the final three quarters to record a 25.15 (165) to 8.6 (54) win. VFLW ROUND 9 The Casey Demons couldn't overcome a slow start against Melbourne Uni at Casey Fields on Saturday. Despite holding their opponents to just one goal after quarter time, the Demons couldn't claw back the 18-point quarter time deficit and fell by five points, 5.8 (38) to 4.9 (33). Casey Sherriff and Harriet Cordner were best for the Demons as they desperately tried to bring their side back into the game after quarter-time. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 13 Tooradin-Dalmore was far too good for Dalyston as the Seagulls ran away with the win courtesy of a dominant second half. With Nick Lang (five goals) and Julian Suarez (four goals) putting plenty of scoreboard pressure on the Magpies, the Seagulls booted 14 of the 18 goals scored in the second half. Luke McKenna and Adam Galea were also impressive for Tooradin-Dalmore as the Seagulls claimed a big win, 21.10 (136) to 8.4 (52).

Doveton amateur boxing junior Levi Harrison continued his fine form with an interstate win over Tasmanian boxer Angus Barker during a boxing select match in the town of Penguin, Tasmania. Harrison was picked to represent Regional Victoria Boxing in a cup tournament against Tasmania and the youngster did his state proud by defeating Barker over three two-minute rounds. From the opening bell, Harrison set the pace, flying straight into the center of the ring and landing a strong left jab. The Tasmanian boxer moved away and countered with his own jab, but it was the tall Doveton boxer who had the most success, winning the first round by landing right hands through and over the guard of his opponent. In the second round, Barker used counter punch tactics and used his feet to move around Harrison with good effect, perhaps taking the second round with his more accurate punching. But some stern words from Victorian coach Ryan Wilson saw Harrison set about his opponent with renewed aggression, forcing Barker against the ropes by landing left
right combinations to both head and body. Wilson was pleased about putting the exciting young boxer into the fray of his first interstate trip, saying Harrison has worked hard for this opportunity and it was a pleasure to see him develop. It was only the inexperience of the Doveton boxer that he was not able to register a count or stoppage against the Tasmanian after connecting with strong solid right hand punches that visibly hurt his opponent. Levi - who will be jetting off to New Zealand shortly for a massive chance to represent his state - relishes the hard work and competitiveness of the boxing caper. “I pride myself on hard work and commitment so that I can be mentally and physically prepared to fight,“ he said recently. “From now until we leave it is just hard work and building up the skill and fitness to be best prepared for the event.” It was a strong performance from the Doveton boxing product, who will look to set to bigger and better things this season with some more confidence.

Eagles send a message By Romy Stephens and Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUNDS 10 AND 11 Beaconsfield announced itself as a serious premiership contender with an impressive come-from-behind win over second-placed Narre Warren at home on Saturday, 10.10 (70) to 8.11 (59). The win marks the Eagles’ sixth on the trot in and sees them edge that little bit closer to ladder-leaders Narre Warren and Berwick. Ladder positioning aside, the confidence boost will help put them right in the mix for premiership contention come finals time in September. What’s more, Beaconsfield will welcome back champion ruckman Scott Meyer after the break. The combination of him - likely playing up forward - and Riley Welsh remaining as the number one ruck will prove a scary combination for the remainder of the season. The Magpies got off to a dominant start, slotting 4.3 to 1.2 by quarter-time. But a goal to full-forward Matthew Johnson at the end of the first quarter would be the precursor for what was to come. Another two majors from Johnson in the second term saw the Eagles narrow the margin to just five points heading into the main break. It seemed the Magpies were going to prove too composed as they retained the lead heading into the final term, but two more goals from Johnson (six in total) saw the Eagles steal the win. The standout performance from Johnson is a pivotal point for him this season, after being dropped and made to earn his position by Beaconsfield coach Leigh McQuillen earlier this year. guably one of the best players in the competition. Defender Corey Walker was the general in defence for the Pies, while Jack Docherty and Kyle O’Sullivan were prolific in the centre. After losing to Narre Warren in a game the Eagles probably should have won back in Round 2, the weekend’s win shows how far they have come in such a short space of time. Woori Yallock was bolstered by a one-off appearance from legendary former St Kilda forward Stephen Milne, who helped the Tigers secure a convincing win over Wandin 16.14 (110) to 9.10 (64) at home. Despite booting four goals, Milne wasn’t the star of the show and found himself overshadowed by Ben Monkhorst who kicked a careerbest five goals. A slow start from the Tigers saw Wandin in front by three points heading into half-time, but the likes of midfielders Zach Monkorst (three goals), Kane Thompson (one) and defender Michael Batten helped their side hit the lead during the third term. Once in front, the Tigers didn’t look back, leaving the Bulldogs goalless in the final quarter and booting eight majors themselves. The win sees fourth-placed Woori Yallock distance itself on the ladder from Cranbourne - who had the bye this week - and Wandin, which are now battling it out for fifth spot. The return of injured players wasn’t the only win for Olinda Ferny Creek, as it recorded a 62-point thumping over Upwey 19.6 (120) to 8.10 (58). Skipper and gun on-baller Marcus Hottes returned from injury, while big man James Charge started to build into his best form after injury derailed the start of his year. With midfielders Dylan Wilson (two goals) and Peter Gough (two) making the most of scoring opportunities, the Bloods took control from the start and were never in doubt for the rest of the game.
Charge (four goals), Lachlan Taylor (three) and Thomas Millwood (two) were influential, proving far too strong for the Tigers’ defence. The seventh-placed Bloods have now edged themselves a game clear of eight-placed Upwey. In the biggest margin of the weekend, the ladder-leading Berwick dominated bottomplaced Healesville with a mammoth win, 26.26 (182) to 3.4 (22). Berwick’s inaccuracy on goal wasn’t enough to help the Bloods who struggled to keep up from the first bounce. A solid performance from Harrison Money (three goals) saw him retain his position on top of the goal-kicking tally for the season. But it was half-forward Jordan Andrews who was clearly best-on-ground with an enormous 10 goals to his name by the final siren. Rod Woodford (three goals) continued his strong season and was gallant for the Bloods, kicking their only goals. With every game proving vital from here on in, all teams will take some time to replenish for this weekend’s mid-season break. Come Round 12, eyes will be fixed on the battle between fourth-placed Woori Yallock and fifthplaced Cranbourne. Meanwhile, Wandin will be aiming for an upset win over Beaconsfield to remain in the finals hunt. There’s still plenty of football left in the home-and-away season, but Monbulk and Pakenham are virtually assured of snaring the top-two spots on the Division 1 ladder after equally impressive wins on the weekend. The Lions - on a particularly noteworthy day for the club with a vast array of 1989 and 2009 premiership heroes watching on - gave the strong home crowd plenty to cheer about, controlling its clash with Doveton from start to finish, 14.15 (99) to 9.4 (58). Ash Green’s side - who play a strong, fearless brand of football - had to work hard to shake
the third-placed Doves off in the first and second quarters, with a good old-fashioned, contested game of footy seeing the home side take in a nine-point lead at the major break. But it was like a switch was flicked, and the Lions completely changed the dimension of the game in the third quarter, kicking six goals to two and opening up a seven-goal lead at the final change. Monbulk, meanwhile, kept its undefeated season going, shaking off a plucky Officer at home, 13.12 (90) to 9.7 (61). The Kangaroos came jumping out of the blocks with a three goal to one opening term, but the Hawks - off the back of its hard-nosed midfield and an amazing ability to get it in quickly to the forward line - kicked into gear and wore down the visitors to snatch back the lead by half-time. It was a matter of when, not if the Hawks would surge clear and bank another win, with the premiership favourite kicking six goals to two in the third term and opening up a six goal lead, a margin never headed despite the Kangaroos winning the last quarter. Belgrave were also massive winners across the weekend, clawing off the bottom of the ladder and sending its opponent, Warburton Millgrove, right back where they came from. The Magpies ran out 13.11 (89) to 8.15 (63) winners off the back of a dominant secondhalf, fighting its way back from a 26-point deficit at quarter time to blanket the Burras across the final three quarters. In the final match of the round, Mount Evelyn bounced back from a tough loss the week prior, holding off a competitive Emerald to remain in fourth spot for another week, 14.16 (100) to 12.6 (78).
