Pumping out their safety message

By Derek Schlennstedt Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade has found a novel way to spread its fire safety message.

On Friday 5 July the brigade ran its eighth Funtime Storytime, which attracted about 70 children and their parents.

The joint initiative between the brigade and Eastern Regional Libraries is designed to help engage the community about important messages including fire safety and literacy among kids.

Most of all, though, the children attending had the chance to spray a fire hose, climb aboard a fire engine and dance with Captain Koala.

Belgrave serves The Belgrave Rotary Club exists to serve its community and neighbours, and on 21 June celebrated 65 years of service.

The group marked the milestone with a night of fun, fellowship and nostalgia.

Charter president Kathie Thomas told the Mail about the club’s formation.

“The Rotary Club of Belgrave was chartered in June 1954 by the Rotary Club of Dandenong,” Ms Thomas said.

“We’re the oldest club in the district and chartered four other clubs.

"That is Bayswater, Emerald, Ferntree Gully

and Monbulk.

"It’s been good to see offshoots growing from what we started all those years ago.”

The celebrations at Marybrook Manor recounted the events of the past 65 years, including the inception of the Upwey Meals on Wheels.

“The Belgrave club founded Meals on Wheels in Upwey 50 years ago,” Ms Thomas said.

“We also support the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services (DRERS), Soupees in Upwey and have given awards to local schools.

als with needs - wheelchairs for example - and recently we supported the Eastern Ranges School in Ferntree Gully and raised funds for a portable collapsible stage for them to use indoors and outdoors, because the kids are very much into music.

“It’s very much about giving back to community.”

Ms Thomas said the club was open to anyone and everyone who had an interest in serving the community.

Not boring Yarra Ranges Council, Eastern Regional Libraries, Milwarra Primary School, ADRA and Inspiro have teamed up to provide several free, fun-filled activities to keep the boredom at bay for children these winter school holidays.

The winter activities include meeting Australian animals and critters up close, STEM activities and even the art of chocolate making.

Fund-raising foray

By Derek Schlennstedt Locals have formed a Gembrook Pub Working Group to try to bring a pub back to the town.

The group has been established under the auspice of the Gembrook Community Group to see what can be done to ensure that a pub is rebuilt in Gembrook.

Members have already been undertaking fund-raising efforts to buy and rebuild the Ranges Hotel, which burnt down in September last year.

Efforts have so far included a $20 minimum sausage sizzle on Sunday 7 July.

Gembrook Pub Working Group committee member Garry McGough, who is also the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association (EDRA) chairman for business and tourism, said the fund-raiser brought in a little over $1000.

“We only had a day's notice as we announced it on Friday and we had 40 people come and donate over $1000,” he said.

“It wasn’t about the sausage, it was all about community interest.

"Gembrook has a huge, strong community

with passionate love for their town and they really care.”

According to the fund-raising poster for the sausage sizzle, all funds would go to initial plans and concept drawings for a new pub.

Mr McGough said phone numbers had been taken and that if the funds were not used, those who had donated would be refunded or given the chance to redirect the cash toward something else for the town.

“The $1005 dollars I’m going to give to our treasurer of the Gembrook Community Group and it will be deposited into the group's bank account,” he said.

“If the money is not spent it will be offered back to the donors, as we have all their phone numbers.

“If we do spend it and don’t use all of it, it will be offered back on a percentage basis, or if we use it for other community purposes such as looking at getting decent toilets.

"We could do with some modern amenities and there are things we can put it towards, but that’s up to the donors, as we’re not going to hang onto the money if they want

their money back.”

A GoFundMe has also been setup which states that “if the money is not raised in time all will be refunded".

The Mail contacted the GoFundMe creator for comment but did not receive a response before deadline.

Mr McGough said the group was not against private investment at the former pub site, but reiterated the site should be used to rebuild a pub or hotel and that the community fundraising was a last resort.

“If a private investor buys the land and is agreeable to build a hotel on it, there won’t be a problem, but we don’t want to see it bought for land bank, or building units on it,” he said.

“We would like to see a hotel back in Gembrook.”

The property is on the market and is set to be auctioned on 20 July.

The Gembrook Pub Working Group holds regular meetings, with dates posted on the Gembrook Community Group Facebook page.

Don’t let dogs of the homeless go hungry

That’s why this winter the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) is helping pet owners at risk of homelessness to provide for their pets.

Because if the risk of homelessness wasn’t hard enough, the loss of a friend and pet can have devastating ramifications.

“We find people going through a crisis; they really need their pets more than ever,” DRERS CEO Tania Bevan said.

“If somebody may be offered crisis accommodation, but they have to choose between going into a shelter and giving up their pet, they’ll choose to stay on the street because at least they have their dog.”

As a result of a sudden surge in clients needing pet food, the not-for-profit organisation is asking residents to drop off spare pet food they might have.

“We’re mainly after cat and dog food,” Ms Bevan said.

“It really makes a difference to someone if we can provide the family with pet food, as it’s such a load off their mind knowing that their pet won’t go hungry or get sick."

DRERS patron Phillip Wollen spoke to the Mail and urged residents to rally behind the charity.

“Every one of us, regardless of our status or resources, is one disaster away from being homeless,” he said.

“When families and social networks fail, for whatever reason, the most vulnerable suffer most.

"Powerless children, the ill, the aged and pets.

"All of them are family. And all of them are

Yarra Ranges CIU detectives are investigating and said the theft occurred between 7pm on 19 June and 7am the following day in Benson Street.

Thieves took a Polaroid camera, wallet, passports and Louis Vuitton luggage, all valued at about $8000.

Sergeant Mark Smithwick reiterated continued calls from police for vehicle owners to lock their doors and remove valuables.

He said thieves targeted a tradie with an unlocked toolbox in the Crown Hotel car park in Lilydale between 7pm and 11.50pm on 22 June.

They stole Makita and Paslode power tools from the toolbox on the ute.

Sgt Smithwick urged tradies to mark their tools with their driver's licence number, including batteries, to aid in their return should they ever be stolen.

See my new ballistic vest Victoria Police has begun deploying new ballistic vests to police officers in the field.

The first vests are being issued to officers in several regions, including the Yarra Ranges.

Over a two year period, Victoria Police will roll out more than 14,000 of the new look ballistic vests to all police officers, Protective Services Officers (PSOs) and Police Custody Officers (PCOs) to replace current vests.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Nigel Howard said the new vests have been developed to improve officer safety and will align with modern police work and current technologies.

"Our police officers, PSOs and PCOs all had a role to play in developing these new vests, so we know they're fit for purpose and meet the requirements of modern policing," Mr Howard said.

"The new vests are lighter, allow for greater thermal management and improved freedom of movement with increased adjustability.

"We've also designed these vests to be future proofed by incorporating better integration with modern policing equipment such as the body worn cameras.

"This is a further step towards modernising Victoria Police and ensuring our officers are equipped with the mechanisms required to perform their duties with safety, comfort and security at the forefront."

As well as a change from navy blue to black, the new vests are lighter in weight and will provide safe and streamlined access to equipment.

Recruits graduating from the police academy from September onwards will also be equipped with the new vest.

“Families under stress grieve deeply when they see their beloved pets suffer.

“DRERS wisely includes care for family pets as a key plank in their compassionate work.

"So, may I urge all caring citizens in the Dandenong Ranges to please support DRERS in its noble work.”

DRERS urgently needs donations of pet food, as well as warm winter clothing and sleeping bags.

The charity is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 12.30pm at the Belgrave Community Hub and residents can drop off items at the front desk.

Making good on pledges dirt roads in our area, all with the aim of ending the days of dust, potholes and mud.

This funding will be provided directly to our council, which will use it to seal more dirt roads faster, as well as reduce the contribution made by landowners.

Major arterial road projects have also been funded.

These include the duplication of the Maroondah Highway in Coldstream, Wellington Road in Lysterfield/Belgrave South and additional lanes along Canterbury Road.

Encouraging fitness and sporting activity is important.

Accordingly, I have secured funding contributions for new pavilions and the upgrading of local facilities.

Projects in Wandin North, Mount Evelyn, Chirnside Park and Mooroolbark are fully funded and will soon get underway.

Importantly, these facilities will benefit increasing numbers of female participants and be available for community use.

Another priority is to boost tourism and local jobs.

Funding of $15.3 million is being spent on four projects: the Yarra Valley Trail, Warburton

Mountain Bike trails, Warburton Community Recreation Precinct and Ridge Walk.

Other projects are planned throughout our towns and suburbs, which are designed to provide better facilities, meet community needs and improve our environment.

They include: safer communities with more than $805,000 of funding for security camera networks in Seville, Montrose, Warburton and Millgrove, Upwey and Wandin; funding for solar panels and batteries at key community facilities in the Yarra Valley; funding for community facilities, including at Dandenong Ranges RSL and Ferny Creek Scouts; and significant contributions towards improved sporting facilities in Belgrave, Healesville, Kilsyth, Seville, Upwey and Yarra Junction.

I am looking forward to working with the many groups involved with these projects to help build stronger communities.

Smith back as speaker

By Casey Neill Casey MP Tony Smith was returned unopposed for a third time as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Labor MP Tony Burke said the only other speaker to achieve this was Australia's first, Frederick Holder.

He was among several MPs from all sides of politics to heap praise on Mr Smith when parliament returned for the first time since the 18 May Federal Election, on 2 July.

Mr Smith said it was an honour and a humbling experience to again take on the role, which involves chairing meetings, staffing the house, and interacting with the Senate, Governor-General and others.

Liberal Robertson MP Lucy Wicks moved that Mr Smith return as speaker, with ALP Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou seconding the motion.

Ms Wicks said Mr Smith was a friend to her and many other MPs he'd been fearless and impartial with his rulings.

"He is able to balance the robust nature of debate in this House with the dignity and respect for our parliamentary traditions, while still bringing his quick wit and personality to this place," she said.

She said Mr Smith "embodies the dignity of this office and the rich heritage of this place".

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said all House of Representatives members respected Mr Smith.

"You have a wise and calming presence in this place," he said.

"The normal passions and the heat of the debate that occurs in this place you accept and you celebrate, but at the same time you temper us in those times when, of course, there is overreach."

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said he was pleased to see Mr Smith back in control of the house.

"You are as fair and impartial a Speaker on either side of politics as I've seen in my more than two decades in this House," he said.

"The fact that you've been nominated by the government side and seconded by the opposition side is to your credit."

Mr Albanese said Mr Smith helped the

house to focus on outcomes and on what united MPs. "You also lead the parliament in terms of the officers, the clerks and all who work to make this institution operate on a day-to-day basis, and you do that in a way which has always been consultative," he said.

Deputy Opposition Leader Richard Marles said Mr Smith had blossomed in the role "to become one of the really great Speakers that this nation has seen".

Independent MP Bob Katter said Mr Smith recognised "that there are other elements in this parliament except those on your left and those on your right—that we are people up here—and we deeply appreciate that".

“The atmosphere is really energised; it’s a really full-on electric atmosphere, because at every single guitar stand you’ve got people playing.

“It’s just a massive guitar fiesta.”

Already announced to take part in this year’s show are Ash Grunwald, Sarah McLeod, Dave Leslie, USA’s Keith Merrow, Dennis Jones and many more.

Ben, along with other guitarists, will be there not only to perform, but offer expert advice and even conduct a workshop or two.

The Belgrave-born and bred musician has been playing guitar since he was 14 years old and has become a regular at the guitar festival.

“This is my third year running,” he said.

“It’s a major event, and a really big deal for

any artists to be invited, so I’m really happy to be invited back.”

Ben invited music lovers to head along and take part in one of the many information seminars as well as see live performances from Australia’s most talented guitarists.

Stolen dog finally is back after theft

By Jed Lanyon An elderly couple has been reunited with their dog Millie after she was taken during a car theft in Blind Bight on Saturday 22 June.

The 11-year-old Beagle was located in Montrose over 60 kilometres away from home on Tuesday 2 July and taken to Coldstream Animal Aid where she happily joined her owner Geoff Schmutter and Bev Barton again on Thursday 4 July.

"I can't believe it ... it's been nearly two weeks now," Mr Schmutter said.

"She means so much to me, we walk two or three times a day with her."

Mr Schmutter said the incident occurred after momentarily leaving his car with the keys in the ignition while grabbing a newspaper.

"Instead of walking, it was pouring with rain so we just drove the car down and I had left the keys in the car.

"I was only two seconds flat and I had watched them drive away."

After a week had passed, Mr Schmutter was unsure if he would ever see Millie again.

The car was found in Bentleigh on 24 June, two days after being stolen but there was still no sign of Millie.

"The car was a bit of a wreck, it's been through bush and everything, the bumper bar scratched really deep. It has scratches all over it and dints, it's been around.

"She's just like one of my children, that's how it is."

Animal Aid Victoria's media and event manager Elle Ammann said that a member of

“When pen hit paper, Mount Evelyn was the first place it started,” said Brunswick cartographer Adam Mattinson.

On Sunday 7 July he launched a map of the township that is unlike any other at Mount Evelyn Community House.

Mr Mattinson spoke about the map and shared an insight into cartography at the event.

The map looks like something ripped from the pages of a Tolkien book, with pyramidal mountains like sharp teeth, forests of glyphlike trees, hand-inked names and even a dragon or two.

But the points of interest on the map include iconic locations around the Mount Evelyn area.

Mr Mattinson spoke to the Mail about the recently-released map, which will eventually cover the entire Yarra Ranges.

"Before I had it in my mind for the whole shire I thought I’d just start with Mount Evelyn," he said.

"I’ve put a lot more details in this Mount Evelyn map."

Those details include areas of historic and environmental significance.

“I’ve gone through historic paper and added areas that have some kind of heritage significance,” Mr Mattinson said.

“Beyond that I also looked at the natural history, too, and up near Coldstream, Olinda Creek used to be a giant swamp but it’s been drained so I’ve included that.

“It’s been really interesting to see how the towns evolved.”

Although the map started as a personal endeavour, Mr Mattinson said he'd enjoyed the interest it had garnered from locals.

He said the map covered a wide area of the Mount Evelyn region.

“This map goes as far south as Silvan and north as Coldstream, Chirnside Park in the west and Wandin in the east,” he said.

Open Door Community Church has a new minister.

Jason Pilcher started in this role in April, coming to Monbulk from the Port Stephens region of NSW. Previously, Jason worked at a Christian school as the student wellbeing officer. His experience with counselling and mental health plus his theological qualifications made him a great fit for the church in Monbulk. Although he has only been there for a short time, he and his three sons have quickly become involved in local schools, sporting clubs and scouting groups.

Jason's role with the church is to pastorally care and grow the church community, and for two days each week he will be working with local schools and Monbulk Care Network (MCN). Jason is passionate about the church being actively involved in caring for the needs of the community and being a voice of hope to everyone.

One way that it is providing this hope for families this year is through a partnership between Fletchers Real Estate and MCN, who

have collected non-perishable goods for distribution to people in need. MCN is appreciative of this partnership, which allows them to extend the support they can offer to those in Monbulk who need it.

Open Door Community Church is a vibrant community of people who love to do life together. Local campaign for sight Myopia or short-sightedness is on the rise in both adults and children worldwide.

Currently, myopia affects around 80 million children around the world, a figure that is set to rise sharply by 2050. The average onset age of myopia is also getting progressively younger; in 1983 it was 11 years old, whereas in 2000 it was eight years old.In response, Yarra Ranges Optical is launching a local campaign to create awareness in the community about myopia, how it can be identified and share options proven to slow the progression of myopia in children.

"It is really interesting what causes myopia.

There are two main factors which can mean your child is more at risk of developing myopia; genetics and lifestyle," Murray Nagle of Yarra Ranges Optical said.

"The chances of your child developing myopia are increased if one or both parents experience myopia. However, lifestyle and especially our modern lifestyles can create myopia, including prolonged near tasks such as reading and gaming on portable devices, or spending time indoors with poor lighting levels."

Treating myopia early can slow its progression, reducing the potential risk of developing future eye health issues. By Michael Doran The Dandenong Ranges has been selected as the first battleground in a CSIRO-led fight to save rainforests across Australia from a devastating weed known as Wandering Trad.

Local community groups have been battling this invasion for many years and it was an excited group that gathered in Emerald on Friday 23 March to hear the good news.

The CSIRO has been involved in research on Wandering Trad biocontrol since 2014 and field biologist Dr Ben Gooden is coordinating the rollout of the biocontrol program across Australia.

He said that highly targeted and tested biocontrol agents are a more environmentally sustainable option than other available tools.

"Currently, the only tools available to the community and local councils against the weed are hand-pulling and chemical herbicides, which only bring short-term control and have the unintended consequence of killing native plants and disrupting complex rainforest ecosystems."

Speaking at the announcement, Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said that without the work of the community groups getting to this point would not have been possible.

"It's great to come along and be involved in the announcement considering how many years it has taken us to get here," he said. "For me this is one of those days I didn't think would ever come."

"Over the last five or six years I have pushed the federal government to put in over $6m supporting environment groups for weed control in the area and that's made a huge difference, but it needs science to come in and support that."

"The scientists at the CSIRO are so passionate and their tenacity is amazing," he said.

"Their attitude is that if you give us the funding we will dedicate our heart and souls to find the solution."

Bill Incoll is a committee member of the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs and said he had been looking forward to this day for years.

By Michael Doran For some time, Parks Victoria have said the Badger Weir Picnic Ground is scheduled to reopen to the public in March and the dedicated members of the Badger Creek Community Planning Group (BCCPG) are taking matters into their own hands to try to make that happen.

A group of 20 are spending Saturday 23 March putting the finishing touches to the Picnic Ground area in readiness to reopen and Doris Pozzi from the BCCPG said that they are responding to a request from Parks Victoria to lend a hand.

"They asked us to organise a group of 20 to help with the last stages of getting the park ready," she said. "Parks Victoria (PV) have done all of the big infrastructure work and we are mulching the garden beds, doing some pruning and cleaning up because that is not part of their budget allocation."

"We formed a relationship with PV and when their local person came out and talked to our group we found out why it was taking longer than we thought it would. One of the reasons was because they wanted to get more money to make some improvements that were not part of the repair work funding."

Doris said the community is incredibly enthusiastic to get this done and when the group posted that the park was opening in early 2019 their facebook page had 2000 likes, shares and comments, a clear indicator of the affection the community has for the park.

"There is something a bit special about this park and its closure has been a huge issue for a lot of people, many have been quite upset about it," she said. "I think it made it hard for local people to have a place to take their kids and go for picnics and evening walks as this place is visited constantly in the summer.

"For everybody, the degree of contact with the park very high and it's not like a day trip to the botanical gardens. It's almost like an extension of their backyard and for most that's how they see it, they expect to come here whenever they want to."

As Victoria's only dual affiliated club, the day is especially exciting for Yarra Ranges Athletics as this is the only event where LAVIC and Athletics Victoria combine to bring a fantastic day of racing.

James ran a two-minute personal best to finish in 2 hours 54 minutes 38 seconds and Graham recorded 3 hours 27 minutes 50 seconds.

The club's regular Saturday morning cross country was held at Lillydale Lake on Saturday morning.

There was another fantastic turnout of eager cross country athletes of all ages bringing the lake to life.

Next weekend is the club's Handicap Day at Margaret Lewis Reserve, a favourite event for many as the staggered start makes for exciting finishes.

A-grade Swannies are staying on top Round 11 of Premier Division Outer East Netball had Olinda Ferny Creek host Upwey-Tecoma at Olinda Recreation Reserve.

With the 17 and under grade having a bye, it was D-grade that was first on court.

For three quarters this was a close contest, with the lead changing several times.

Olinda Ferny Creek held a single goal lead going into the last quarter before Upwey-Tecoma unleashed with a 12 goals to one last quarter to steamroll the home side, 33 to 23.

Michelle Tomlinson, Maddy Smith and Sarah Seddon battled hard for the Swannies.

In C-grade Upwey-Tecoma controlled the game comfortably for the first three quarters and led by eight goals at three-quarter time.

Olinda Ferny Creek put up a huge fight in the last quarter but left its run too late, losing by just two goals, 44 to 42.

Kirsten Andrich, Sera Long and Hannah Pace were among Olinda Ferny Creek's best.

In B-grade, Olinda Ferny Creek rattled off its 10th consecutive victory and remains undefeated for the season after accounting for Upwey-Tecoma.

A consistent performance throughout saw the Swannies run out 22-goal victors against the Tigers, 61 to 39.

Ash Cartlidge, Nic Millwood (45 goals) and Dana Portarianos were the best players for Olinda Ferny Creek.

put in another dominant performance and overpowered Upwey-Tecoma to record a commanding 54-goal victory, 89 to 35.

with Ali Darrington, Healesville High School work experience student

What is something people don’t know about you?

I play more than one instrument and I sing.

I play a little guitar, violin, keyboard and the saxophone.

I always try to practice my singing whenever I can. When my dad comes and picks me up as soon as I’m in the car I put the radio on and we sing to every country or rock and roll song we know.

I also used to help my dad out in the shed with our 1928 A-Model Ford Roadster.

What has been your most memorable moment?

When I was around five or six I used to want to play soccer. I had never watched soccer - I just wanted to play it and I’m not sure why. I can remember my dad chasing me around the yard while I kicked the ball everywhere thinking that was how you played soccer.

I now know that it’s not, but after a while I didn’t want to play anymore.

What would your final meal be?

Pancakes with Frootloops with a lot of fruit and chocolate. A LOT OF FRUIT! What event, past or present or future would you like to witness?

There is more than one event I would like to attend: Princess Diana’s death is a day I would like to have witnessed; the JFK assassination as well as the death of Marilyn Monroe; the hanging of Ned Kelly - and not just the hanging the whole lot; and Ted Bundy’s execution.

What is your favourite television show?

Friends. When I was around five or six I had a stay-at-home mum and my mum introduced me to the TV series.

What is your favourite book?

Last year in Year 9 I was reading a booked called Love, Simon and it’s about a guy coming out gay to his friends and family after being blackmailed. I loved the book so much

that I read the second one called Leah on the Offbeat, which is about one of his best friend’s coming out bisexual. Both are really amazing books.

What is something you are looking forward to in the future?

Hopefully becoming a journalist, moving out and becoming independent are the three things I’m most looking forward to in the future.

Why did you choose to do work experience with the mail?

I knew I wanted to do something that involved journalism and what better way to do so then to contact your local Mail? My dad’s friend suggested I try the Mail News Group and my mum mentioned it a few times so I thought ‘why not?’

I thought it would give a good insight on what it means to be a journalist and what I would need and not need in school and what skills I’d need to be on this career path.

Which object that you’ve lost do you wish you still had?

My Hoodlums beanie! When my dad moved from Healesville he put my beanie in a bag of hats and while I was up at his house on the weekend we couldn’t find the bag. No bag, no beanie.

What have you learnt about what it takes to be a journalist?

A lot! You have to have people skills and be friendly for when you go meet people and interview them. You have to have the confidence to just show up, ask questions and take a few photos and people don’t realise that takes a lot to do. At times you go on a touchy subject and kind of have to go with your gut on if it’s a good time or not and if it’s a good question or not.
