Construction work is well underway at the Nicholas Timms Retreat in Healesville.

The retreat is being built in honour of Nicholas Timms, who lost his battle with cancer in 2008, aged 21 months.

In 2013, Nicholas' parents Michael and Belinda Timms purchased a four acre block of land on the corner of Camerons Road and Maroondah Parade, Healesville with the vision of building a retreat to help other families going

through the same situation.

Mr Timms said it's amazing to see the vision for the retreat turn into a reality.

"What we wanted to do was create a retreat for kids and their families to come and use free of charge," he said.

"To see that it's actually coming out of the ground, it means everything to us.

"There is a real need for this."

LETTERS How to fix a botched project For years I've been grappling with the Shire of Yarra Ranges over the ridiculous Warburton Mountain Bike Project.

How hard can it be, to design a bicycle plan that doesn't unfairly impact the locals?

So at the start of this year I set out to design a better version of the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination Project, just to see if it could be done.

In particular, I wanted to see if I could eliminate the horrible problems that this project created for myself and the other residents of Old Warburton.

I was shocked at how easy it was.My new plan not only eliminated most of the problems of the residents but dramatically improved the riding experience!

It also provided more employment opportunities for locals and made the trails easier to administer.

Among other improvements, my plan reduced the bushfire risk but, unfortunately, could not eliminate it. Increased bushfire risk still remains the single biggest threat generated by this project.

When I finished assembling my maps and written instructions I began to wonder if the council should see it.

I arranged a meeting with a team of council officers led by Matt Harrington, to show them my improvements.

We met at Old Warburton on Monday 18 April.

They seemed surprised and interested.

They seemed to respect the input of a person who had nearly 50 years of accumulated knowledge of the area.

They seemed to like many of the proposed improvements.

They expressed an interest in taking my plan away with them.

I expressed a desire to talk to their architects in conjunction with representatives of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

Grants for roads Our group has been named SCS Launching Place Primary School by our local council after submitting a petition over two and a half years ago.

Our main aim is to seal a section of roads creating infrastructure, proper drainage and slowing down the through traffic by adding speed humps.

This very short section of roads in question are Ruthven Street, Wellman Street and Grieve

Street of about 450 metres heading from Gembrook-Launching Place Road up to Launching Place Primary School.

With the through traffic and urban growth upon us, we as a community need to act, because you cannot put a price on family safety.

A grant has been put forward by our federal member and now our council have these funds - $150 million (over 10 years - Editor) has been allocated for the sealing of unmade roads in the areas close to schools.

This money will help develop our community and create a safe and positive environment.

As these roads stand at the moment are unsafe, gutters are continuously blocked, pot holes

and narrow sections with some drops of threefoot into gutter traps for our children that walk or ride bikes or parents pushing prams and for the vehicles traveling at alarming speeds with little care for their surroundings.

I am very concerned there's an accident waiting to happen.

With 179 families attending the school and all others that use these roads we have a strong voice for action.

Through this scheme we can achieve our goals of creating a safe environment for all to use.

More sightings of elusive possums

By Jed Lanyon There has been an increase in sightings of Leadbeater's Possums outside of their described range in the Victorian Central Highlands, including in bushfire regrowth forests, according to a study published in February.

The study found that Leadbeater's Possums were detected at six independent sites 1-14.8 kilometres outside of their described range and within 1-15 kilometres of the boundary of the Great Divide Complex bushfire that burned more than one million hectares over two months from December 2006.

Environmentalist groups have pressured the state government to halt or phase out logging operations in the region due to the threats to the marsupial species that is considered highly susceptible to the impacts of bushfire and only inhabit Victoria's Central Highlands.

The study reads, "These findings suggest that Leadbeater's Possum is either capable of traversing a distrurbed forest matrix and recolonising fire-affected habitat within a decade of a severe bushfire event, and/or able to persist in lower-intensity burned or unburned refugia."

VicForests Biodiversity Conservation and Research Manager Tim McBride, along with two other ecologists, published the study in CSIRO's Journal of Australian Mammology.

Currently, sightings of a Leadbeater's Possum create a 200 metre buffer preventing logging from taking place in the area.

A lowland Leadbeater's Possum in captivity at Healesville Sanctuary. 151468 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM According to VicForests, the known colonies of the Leadbeater's Possum had increased from 153 in 2014 to 688 from late last year, prompting the Victorian Association of Forest Industries to call on the government to 'undertake immediate extended surveys' on the species in April.

Friends of Leadbeater's Possum president Steve Meacher said the VicForests figure is more representative of increased survey effort and the introduction of more effective techniques in sighting the animals, such as the use of motion sensor cameras.

"It is noteworthy that most of the new sightings occurred in the first few years after 2014 (by August 2017 it was already 650) and then declined dramatically (only another 38 in 15 months), in spite of sustained effort," he said.

"This could indicate that new sightings have peaked and most of the possums that can be found have been found.

"If that is the case, 688 is a worryingly small number of sightings, even if each individual represents a small colony of 2 or 3 animals.

"And with a life expectancy of around 6 years in the wild, most of the individuals seen in 2014 will no longer be alive, so the total number of sightings over several years cannot be taken to indicate the size of the population at any one time," Mr Meacher said.

Friends of Leadbeater's Possum is attempting to stop state government controlled VicForests from logging in areas that are home to greater gliders and the Leadbeater's Possum.

A trial in the federal court commenced on Monday 3 June in the case of Friends of Leadbeater's Possum Inc v VicForests, and could have ramifications for Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) across the country and change the way that forests and threatened species are managed and protected.

Environmental Justice Australia (EJA) is challenging the legality of logging by VicForests in areas of habitat for the critically endangered Leadbeater's possum and the vulnerable greater glider.

A slippery slope for driver

By Jed Lanyon Emergency services were called to reports of a car overhanging an embankment along Healesville-Yarra Glen Road at around 2.15pm on Tuesday 25 June.

Healesville resident, Olene, had attempted to reverse out of her long sloping driveway only to have her car slide and momentarily lose control.

Olene held her foot on the brake until a police officer arrived advising her to move the steering wheel to prevent the car from slipping any further.

Fortunately Olene was able to climb over and out the other side of her car.

Police attending the scene believed that recent rainfall softened part of the driveway, causing the car to slide closer to the edge.

Police, CFA, SES and ambulance services arrived at the scene.

Olene thanked those who came to her aid as well as a passer-by travelling from Hurstbridge who provided their help.

Tow trucks were able to safely remove the vehicle out of danger.

Hunt for vandals Police have released images of three men they want to speak to following vandalism at a Healesville car wash.

Officers said vandals smashed vending machines at the Hunter Street car wash between 1am and 2am on Friday 21 June, causing $1000 in damage.

Farm burglary Thieves forced their way into a Yellingbo farm warehouse and stole up to $8000 in tools.

Yarra Ranges CIU Detectives are investigating the incident, which occurred at the Healesville-Kooweerup Road site at 1.35am on Sunday 23 June.

The thieves left with a Holden Statesman and tools valued between $5000 and $8000.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage.

Three times over A driver has lost his licensed for 12 months after he allegedly blew three times over the legal blood alcohol limit in Wesburn.

Police said they intercepted the driver on Railway Road on 29 June and he returned a breath test reading of 0.160.

A silver Toyota collided with two legally parked vehicles on Dorset Road in Croydon about 7.20pm on 29 June, causing significant damage to all three vehicles.

Police said the driver of the Toyota failed to stop at the scene, near Lincoln Road, and continued driving south on Dorset Road for several hundred metres.

Concerned and alert members of the public later observed the damaged Toyota stopped near Lindisfarne Road and waited with the driver until police arrived.

A 27-year-old man is expected to be charged on summons with careless driving, failing to stop after a collision and refusing to undergo a preliminary breath test (PBT).

Upon conviction, the penalty for refusing a PBT is a minimum two-year loss of licence and a possible fine or imprisonment.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has dash cam footage of the event or saw the damaged Toyota driving on Dorset Road should call Senior Constable McGregor at Maroondah Highway Patrol on 9881 7900.

Push is on for climate emergency

Wildlife in fight against extinction Healesville Sanctuary will play a key role in a new plan to save threatened species from extinction.

Zoos Victoria released the Wildlife Conservation Master Plan on Thursday 27 June and Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D'Ambrosio announced $3 million to kick start the five-year project.

The document highlights exactly what it will take to stop wildlife extinction.

It details the financial commitment, resources and collaboration required.

In a race against time, Zoos Victoria has added a further six local threatened native species on the brink of extinction to its priority list, and a further eight species to its watch list.

Combined community conservation and international wildlife projects will cost about $80 million.

Zoos Victoria CEO Dr Jenny Gray said the master plan was a sum of all the experience gathered in the 10 years since a team of zoo scientists recorded the sound of extinction the final call of the last Christmas Island pipistrelle bat.

"This plan combines all of our conservation work with species both locally and globally," she said.

"It brings together our expertise in animal science and social science, which we hope will continue to inspire the community to commit to wildlife-friendly behaviours."

Dr Gray said there had been many successes worth celebrating but the next five years were critical.

"Habitat loss and climate change are two of the most pressing threats affecting wildlife globally," she said.

"Even the loss of one species to extinction could throw the entire ecosystem out of balance and have catastrophic flow-on effects.

"In the past five years, working together, we have truly made a difference for local and international species - from cracking the code of breeding the critically endangered baw baw frog, to celebrating the first ever zoo birth of a guthega skink, and nearing the threshold of recovery success for the eastern barred bandicoot on mainland Victoria.

"Imagine what we can do in the next five years."

She said the plan was Zoos Victoria's line in the sand.

"No local threatened native species will become extinct on our watch," she said.

Hairdressers closes after 35 years

By Jed Lanyon Marisa Spataro has given her final haircut on Saturday 29 June, having retired and moved on from Reflex Hair Studio.

If you were wondering just how long Ms Spataro had been in the hairdressing business, she named her store after the recent hit The Reflex by Duran Duran, which topped the charts in 1984.

"I was 21 and I loved that band and I've still got that song on vinyl," she said.

In some cases, Ms Spataro has cut the hair of up to four different generations of a single family over 35 years.

"You really feel appreciated when people bring their children and their grandchildren or when they recommend you to other people.

"When I came here it was antique shop ...

I gave myself 12 months, I thought if I'm not busy I'll just pack up my bags and go.

"It just took off. The town pretty much embraced me and I was really lucky.

"The people here are lovely. You walk down the street and everybody knows you and everyone's friendly.

"It's just been a beautiful town to work in."

Ms Spataro said that the hair styles have changed quite a lot over the years and that the job is a lot easier these days.

"They've changed heaps. I loved the mullet because that was from my era ... Hairdressing was a lot harder once but now because of the styling and equipment we have, it works a lot easier now.

Ms Spataro gave an insight on the relationship between a hairdresser and a client.

"Some people have been coming through that door and I don't know them any better

"And then other people invite you over for coffee or dinners and will tell you everything about their family."

She said that another hairdresser will be taking over the first floor of the studio and that

the second floor will be used as an Airbnb for tourists.

Ms Spataro said that she appreciates the support of the Healesville community over the years and that she plans to spend some time down at the beach at Mount Martha.

Environmental groups in the Yarra Ranges are pushing for council to declare a climate emergency.

The Hills and the Yarra Valley Community for Climate Action are new groups concerned with the impacts of climate change and are aiming to make a positive contribution starting at a local level.

Member of the Hills Community for Climate Action Ciaran McCormack said that he wants to see Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne City Council follow the lead of City of Sydney, who recently declared a climate emergency on 24 June.

"The explosion in community activity is because since the federal election, communities are concerned that the federal government is going to sit on its hands for another three years, in terms of energy and climate," McCormack said.

"It's a powerful piece of symbolism acknowledging that climate change is urgent and needs to be addressed immediately.

"It would commit council to things like setting an ambitious net zero emissions target, ideally by 2030 for its own operations.

"It would send an emphatic message to our community and local businesses that climate change is a top priority and it (council) wants to work with the community to address it."

McCormack said that since the City of Darebin declared a climate emergency in 2016, the movement has gone global with 594 jurisdictions in 13 countries following suit. Last week Yarra Ranges Council passed a motion to create a report to evaluate their Adapting to a Changing Climate and Energy Future plan.

"We acknowledge that council has had this and other useful initiatives over the last few years but this motion didn't go nearly far enough," McCormack said "Last week's council motion stated it wants 'a range of actions council could take ... in partnership with the community', Hills Community for Climate Action would be happy to partner with council on this as would similar groups like Yarra Valley Community for Climate Action."

Speaking at the 25 June council meeting, Mayor Tony Stevenson said that council was on track to meet emissions targets for 2020.

"We've been so busy saving energy and reducing emission levels that we haven't actually got back to reporting," Mr Stevenson said.

"We're almost there, so it is time to think about recapping what we've achieved and to have council staff be briefing us on what more can be achieved."

"I look forward to seeing what comes from that report."

Art for equality celebrated A new art project will celebrate the Aboriginal women who shaped the Yarra Ranges community.

The cash came from the health promotion foundation's Gender Equality and the Arts grants.

Yarra Ranges Council will partner with Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA), Wandoon Estate, Tarrawarra Museum of Art, Wurundjeri Land Council, Cultural Development Network and Worowa Aboriginal College on the project.

Together they'll find, explore, celebrate and

share the stories of Aboriginal women who have shaped the Yarra Ranges community in the past, their descendants, and women leaders in the contemporary Aboriginal community.

Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams said the grants program would harness the transformative power of the arts to push for real change on gender equality.

"We want every Victorian to enjoy the benefits of good health and wellbeing, and their gender should never be a barrier to that," she said.

"However, we know that women are more likely than men to experience family violence and abuse at the hands of their partner, which can have an enormous toll on their physical

and mental health.

"This initiative will see councils partnering with cutting-edge female artists to deliver exciting new art and theatre works which give voice to local women and girls' experiences and push for change."

VicHealth Acting CEO Dr Lyn Roberts said it was important that women were empowered to have a voice and claim their space in the community.

"Since the #MeToo movement we've seen an outpouring of anger and grief from women who've experienced sexism, harassment and violence at the hands of men," she said.

"We've also seen immense courage and optimism from many women pushing to change things for the better."

Dr Roberts said one way of changing things was to provide greater information, knowledge and skills for the public about why gender equality in the community was good for everyone.

"Art enables people to walk in the shoes of others, it validates the experiences of people who might not have been heard or who have been marginalised," she said.

"These projects will provide an opportunity for councils to work with artists and local women to share their experiences and challenge the harmful attitudes and stereotypes about gender holding us back."

Respectful Relationships art show winners announced artists in front of more than 200 community members, and the winning artworks were on display throughout the night.

Eastern Health’s health promotion team has been working across the Yarra Valley to increase the capacity for all schools to encourage and promote respectful relationships.

Healesville Rotary Club contributed $1200 in prize money for the winners, who created art work that embodied healthy and respectful relationships.

Keeping cosy for winter

By Jed Lanyon Warratina Lavender Farm will be hosting the annual tea cosy exhibition from 13-21 July.

The nine day exhibition will raise money for the Cancer Council, having already raised over $54,000 in the last six years.

A tea cosy is a knitted cover that is placed over a teapot to help keep the tea hot.

Donations of tea cosies and other knitted goods are welcome and will be sold throughout the fundraising exhibition.

The best tea cosy design will win $250 in prize money and event creator Lorraine Dunbar said she will be looking for a tea cosy that has a 'wow factor'.

She said that they receive donations from across Australia and overseas.

Budget is backed

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges councillors unanimously approved the proposed 2019-'20 budget at the Tuesday 25 June council meeting.

Under the approved budget Ryrie Ward ratepayers will face the biggest rates hike.

The state government capped the shire's average rate rise at 2.5 per cent.

But rates are based on property valuations, so some ratepayers will see higher increases while others will see a drop.

The average valuation in Ryrie increased 4.77 per cent, so rates in the likes of Healesville and Yarra Glen will increase an average 6.61 per cent.

Melba Ward valuations went backwards 3.66 per cent, so rates there will drop 1.64 per cent on average.

Chirnside and Walling rates will also drop.

The average residential valuation increased 0.48 per cent On farming properties, the average rate rise will be 4.61 per cent.

Commercial property rates will increase by 3.79 per cent across the shire and industrial

property rates are to rise 5.36 per cent.

The council approved spending $2.26 million on drainage and $3.69m on footpaths and cycle ways.

There's $16.64m allocated for parks and open space and $6.79m for recreational, leisure and community facilities.

Roads are set for a $10.89m boost and buildings $27.97m.

"The works being done this year on the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination, the Yarra Valley Trail and The RidgeWalk will be supported by the budget, drawing on local funding and federal and state grants," Mayor Tony Stevenson said.

"It's also important to highlight the breadth of the works we do and the projects that will make day-to-day life easier for our residents.

"In the hills, we have a number of drainage projects in places like Waratah Avenue in Belgrave, Kallista-Emerald Road and Portman Road in The Patch and Hume Lane in Mount Dandenong, among others areas, which we know are well-needed by residents."

The budget will allow the council to deliver more than 120 services.

It includes $3.9m for libraries, $1.6m for maternal and child health and immunisation services, $1.8m for maintaining aquatic facilities and more.

The council has worked to secure a lower energy rate and is switching to energy-efficient lamps in public lighting, to drive down energy costs and reduce environmental footprint.

Cr Stevenson said the council also negotiated a cheaper price for processing recyclables from kerbside collection so its waste charge would stay the same.

"Despite recent pressures on the recycling industry, no recyclables collected in Yarra Ranges will go to landfill," he said.

E-waste ban in place A ban on e-waste in household bins is now in place.

From 1 July the State Government will not allow any e-waste into landfill.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said that any object that could take a power source - from a battery to a cord - was classified as ewaste.

He said electronics around the home contained precious, non-renewable metals such as gold and platinum, along with mixed plastics and metal circuitry.

Cr Stevenson said this could all take on a new life if recycled.

"Some appliances can also contain toxic heavy metals, such as lead, mercury and arsenic," he said.

Coldstream Waste Transfer Station has a free e-waste drop-off point, thanks to funding from Sustainability Victoria.

Fees might apply at other waste transfer stations.

Seniors donate to help the homeless

Healesville's probus and senior citizens clubs made a donation of $255 to Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc (HICCI) on Tuesday 25 June.

Speaking at a presentation, president of the Healesville Ladies Probus Club Val Styles said, "On behalf of the two ladies probus clubs and the senior citizens, we'd like to present HICCI with this cheque.

"And I'm sure HICCI will be able to put it to great use."

HICCI executive office Alison Gommers was thankful for the generous donation.

HICCI aims to provide practical care and support to the community of Healesville and Yarra Glen in times of crisis, emergency or personal need.

"In the last month we've had so many more people come in," Ms Gommers said.

"We've had a couple hundred more requests for food and there are a lot more homeless people who are coming our way because of the cold weather.

"So we're trying to do our best to help them

and keep them as comfortable as possible."

Secretary of the Healesville Senior Citizens Club Ken Fewster explained that the money came as a result of a recent concert hosted at the club and from fundraisers from the two probus clubs.

"It was $255 left over, and probus groups aren't allowed to make profits so we decided to give it to HICCI, who do so much for the community."

The donation was made by the Healesville Senior Citizens Club, Healesville Ladies Probus Club and the Valley Ladies Probus Club.

There are sambar, fallow deer and kangaroos roaming the grounds with you, along with guinea fowl and peacocks.

Overnight campers are welcome from September 1 to May 31 each season, but you do need to book a spot. Bring your own gear and set yourself up for a camping trip with a difference and take the opportunity to roam the zoo after hours.

The Mansfield Zoo is open every day from 10am to 6pm (10pm on N.Y.E.) and is closed on Christmas Day only.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I play more than one instrument and I sing.

I play a little guitar, violin, keyboard and the saxophone.

I always try to practice my singing whenever I can. When my dad comes and picks me up as soon as I’m in the car I put the radio on and we sing to every country or rock and roll song we know.

I also used to help my dad out in the shed with our 1928 A-Model Ford Roadster.

What has been your most memorable moment?

When I was around five or six I used to want to play soccer. I had never watched soccer - I just wanted to play it and I’m not sure why. I can remember my dad chasing me around the yard while I kicked the ball everywhere thinking that was how you played soccer.

I now know that it’s not, but after a while I didn’t want to play anymore.

What would your final meal be?

Pancakes with Frootloops with a lot of fruit and chocolate. A LOT OF FRUIT! What event, past or present or future would you like to witness?

There is more than one event I would like to attend: Princess Diana’s death is a day I would like to have witnessed; the JFK assassination as well as the death of Marilyn Monroe; the hanging of Ned Kelly - and not just the hanging the whole lot; and Ted Bundy’s execution.

What is your favourite television show?

Friends. When I was around five or six I had a stay-at-home mum and my mum introduced me to the TV series.

What is your favourite book?

Last year in Year 9 I was reading a booked called Love, Simon and it’s about a guy coming out gay to his friends and family after being blackmailed. I loved the book so much

that I read the second one called Leah on the Offbeat, which is about one of his best friend’s coming out bisexual. Both are really amazing books.

What is something you are looking forward to in the future?

Hopefully becoming a journalist, moving out and becoming independent are the three things I’m most looking forward to in the future.

Why did you choose to do work experience with the mail?

I knew I wanted to do something that involved journalism and what better way to do so then to contact your local Mail? My dad’s friend suggested I try the Mail News Group and my mum mentioned it a few times so I thought ‘why not?’ I thought it would give a good insight on what it means to be a journalist and what I would need and not need in school and what skills I’d need to be on this career path.

Which object that you’ve lost do you wish you still had?

My Hoodlums beanie! When my dad moved from Healesville he put my beanie in a bag of hats and while I was up at his house on the weekend we couldn’t find the bag. No bag, no beanie.

What have you learnt about what it takes to be a journalist?

A lot! You have to have people skills and be friendly for when you go meet people and interview them. You have to have the confidence to just show up, ask questions and take a few photos and people don’t realise that takes a lot to do. At times you go on a touchy subject and kind of have to go with your gut on if it’s a good time or not and if it’s a good question or not.

Bloods’ breakthrough win

By Nick Creely It's been a tough start to life in AFL Outer East for Healesville, but there are always glimmers of hope, and Saturday provided its fans and footballers with one of those moments.

The previously winless Bloods - who sit bottom of the Premier Division - ladder, snatched an incredible victory from the jaws of defeat on the road against Upwey Tecoma, 10.11 (71) to 8.14 (62).

While the win will have no bearing on the race for finals, it was a win for all involved in the Bloods community.

The Bloods trailed for most of the day, with the Tigers always seemingly having the upper hand, but crucially the visitors stuck fat and entered the main break with a manageable 13-point deficit.

Fighting hard - and making life difficult for the home side - the Bloods just kept on ticking along, with Rodney Woodford (six goals) completely dominant as the game started to heat up and giving them a fighting chance of stealing the win in the final term after kicking three goals to one in the third.

With conditions less than favorable for free flowing footy, the Bloods - against the odds and with pressure to finally push for its first win of the season - surged home, kicking two unanswered goals in the final term to walk away nine-point winners.

Woodford was clearly best afield, snaring six goals in an indomitable display, while Nick Mende and Ash Hamer were superb.

Berwick, meanwhile, flexed its muscles when it mattered to run away with a dominant win against Wandin at home, 15.22 (122) to 5.6 (36).

Incredibly, the Dogs came out snarling, kicking five first quarter goals, opening up a 16-point lead on the dominant Wickers.

But that's where its competitiveness ended, with the Wickers holding the visitors goalless over the next three quarters, adding a further 13 themselves in a ruthless display in the rain.

Jordan and Madi Andrews were superb for the Wickers - particularly after the first break - while Travis Tuck and Dog Tom Hinds were influential.

In the round's remaining matches, a faststarting Beaconsfield were too good for an under-siege Cranbourne at Holm Park, 12.7 (79) to 4.6 (30), while Narre Warren held off a brave Olinda Ferny Creek, 13.20 (98) to 9.4 (58).

Craig Stewart (13) had a ripper of a day playing in the Healesville Social Golf Club (HSGC) monthly Trophy Day (stroke).

He won the day with a nett 64, scored two nearest the pins, had the longest drive and managed an eagle on the 15th par five.

The next closest player, Greg Urquhart (12), hit a nett 71 while Allan Litchfield (21) came third with a score of 72.

The other nearest the pins were hit by Karl Hradsky and Allan Litchfield.

Under cloudless skies, 30-plus Warburton Golf Club members enjoyed the greatly-improved conditions on Wednesday 26 June.

The course was still quite soft with very little run for this par contest.

This was evidenced by the scores, as the +1 that Phil Garside came in with won the daily voucher.

It was Phil's second win in a row, showing up his little brother.

Mates played for Jai

By Casey Neill Hundreds turned out for an emotional tribute to a Mount Evelyn Junior Footballer who lost his life last year.

The under-16s from the Mount Evelyn and Wandin junior football clubs played for the Jai Reed Cup on Sunday 30 June.

Jai died from complications with epilepsy on 28 October last year so the match raised funds for the Epilepsy Foundation.

Mount Evelyn Junior Football Club president Anthony Burns said the club was still counting the proceeds.

"From midday, everyone that came through the gate we donated 100 per cent of the funds to epilepsy," he said.

Burns said the day was very emotional, with lots of hugs.

"I was really impressed with our community, with how many people were there," he said.

"They filled the hill, shoulder to shoulder."

The Rovers had a big win over an undermanned Wandin, 142 to 12.

Burns said coach Daniel Thiele presented Jai's number 11 guernsey to his grandfather, who in turn passed it onto Jai's younger brother Kayden.

"Kayden kicked a goal in one of the quarters, and every player on the ground got around him," Burns said.

Jai made a big impact on the club in two short seasons, described as a larrikin, charismatic and a really likeable kid.

His death rocked and then bonded Jai's teammates.

"I can see them in the change rooms before games, the tight bond that they've got now," Burns said.

"Just all of them are there to help each other."

The club hopes to make the match an annual tradition.

Celebrating the past

By Nick Creely There was plenty of emotion at Holm Park on Saturday 22 June, whether it was in the stands or in the packed social rooms for the annual Past Players and Luncheon and inaugural Russell Rowe Shield, named after a legend of both the Woori Yallock and Beaconsfield football clubs.

While the two clubs battled it out in a thrilling clash in his honour that culminated in a narrow win to the Eagles, Rowe himself was reflecting on his football life upstairs overlooking the ground, and was full of emotion when describing just what the honour meant to him.

“I’ve had a great life in football," he said.

“But, I’ll be going for the Tigers today.”

Starring for Woori Yallock in its 1971, 1973 and 1974 premierships, as well as winning a best and fairest in 1975 along with a successful VFA stint with Caulfield, Rowe was recruited by Melbourne, famously kicking four goals among 25 possessions in his debut for the Demons against St Kilda in 1980, despite being of the belief that it was actually 27 possessions.

But in Round 9 against Richmond, Rowe got injured and featured only two more times that season.

“I pulled my thigh muscle, and the trainer who I was dealing with was called ‘Skull’, and he said ‘you can’t play for six, seven weeks’, and typically being pig-headed, I tried to play after about five, and wasn’t game enough to go back to the trainer because I actually pulled my thigh muscle again,” he said.

With a change of coach at the end of 1980, the legendary Ron Barassi replaced Carl Ditterich, and Rowe was of the belief that he would get another chance after a successful pre-season.

“I did all the pre-season, played all the practice matches, and thought I was doing

“In that last pre-season match against Richmond at Port Melbourne I was playing in the back pocket, and I’ll never forget this as long as I’ll live, Barassi comes up to me and says he’s got some bad news.

“I thought someone in my family had passed away, and he said ‘we’ve decided to go with youth, you’re 28 years of age, see you later’, and that was it.

“It was very disappointing, I then decided to go back and play with Caulfield, which was

probably the wrong move, before returning to Woori.”

Rowe - who eventually coached Beaconsfield to its drought-breaking 1999 senior premiership in the West Gippsland Football League after a stellar playing and coaching career with the Tigers - came to the Eagles after his son Joel joined the club, linking up with a prominent name in football in the south-east.

“Joel and I went for a run, it was on a Thursday or Tuesday night down at the old Beaconsfield ground, and we were watching training, and Doug Koop (current Officer coach) - obviously an ex-Melbourne player too - noticed I was watching, and that’s how I got involved,” he said.

He would go on to lead the Eagles to the ultimate glory in 1999 - its first premiership since joining West Gippsland - despite a slight stumble in the first final, and remains grateful for one of the most enjoyable seasons of his career.

“I was very confident as the coach,” he said.

“And I was lucky to coach them, they were a great team, and we achieved the ultimate glory.

“It was a fantastic year.”

Rowe even got the chance to pull on the boots against Warragul in a one-off game in 2001 (at the age of 47) for the Eagles, one of the great thrills of his football life.

“I played with Joel, I never thought that would happen, and it did. I had a great time,” he said.

The past players and officials of Beaconsfield were also treated to an entertaining talk by ex-Collingwood and Woori Yallock champion Damian Monkhorst, as well as ex-Hawthorn and Beaconsfield-listed defender Brendan Whitecross.

Safety push for motorcycle riders A new online quiz has been developed to test and refresh motorcyclists' knowledge of safe riding behaviour and road rules.

The quiz engages motorcyclists in a conversation about safety and encourages ongoing education about road rules and rider behaviour.

"Whether an experienced, recreational or learner rider, we want all motorcyclists to brush up on their skills and knowledge each year to ensure they are riding to their ability and adapting to the road conditions," Roads, Road Safety and the TAC Minister Jaala Pulford said.

"Motorcyclists are more vulnerable our

roads compared to other road users.

"Riders should test their skills and knowledge and continue to develop and practice safe riding habits."

The safety messages will also be promoted to motorcyclists through traditional and social media, and roadside billboards across Victoria.

Motorcyclists are over-represented in road trauma.

They make up less than four per cent of registered vehicles yet account for about 19 per cent of deaths on our roads this year.

the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Perfect Ride motorcycle safety campaign, urging Victorian riders to take care on the roads.
