MUSIC ACCOLADE FOR KEV CARMODY The darling of the Darling Downs - and one of Australia’s most celebrated musicians and singer songwriters - Kev Carmody has been announced as the recipient of the 2019 JC Williamson Award, by organiser Live Performance Australia (LPA).

The JC Williamson Award is the foremost honour that the Australian live entertainment industry can bestow. Kev will be honoured in Melbourne at the 2019 Helpmann Awards Act II ceremony on Monday 15 July.

In awarding the 2019 JC Williamson Award, LPA recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian live entertainment and performing arts industry and shaped the future of our industry for the better.

Past recipients include Dame Joan Sutherland, Barry Humphries, Kylie Minogue, Dr Jimmy Little, John Bell, Paul Kelly, Michael Gudinski, Stephen Page, David Williamson and Archie Roach, to name but a few.

Kev Carmody is one of Australia’s pre-eminent wordsmiths whose politically charged, and socially aware lyrics have cemented him as one of our country’s contemporary voices.

Of Aboriginal and Irish heritage, both cultures famous for oral histories in song, Kev was born to be a story-teller. His compositions include ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ with Paul Kelly which is based on the story of The Gurindji Strike

Live-performance legend Kev Carmody will be honoured with a JC Williamson award at the Helpmanns in July. and Vincent Lingiari in their struggle for Indigenous land rights and reconciliation.

Kev said: "The artistic and creative prestige that the JC Williamson Award bestows upon me, in this case, is an acknowledgement of our ancient Indigenous oral musical and storytelling history. As this year's recipient I accept the award on behalf of this cultural recognition, with humility and gratitude ...... Thank you."

Born in 1946, Carmody grew up on a cattle station in the Darling Downs area of south-eastern Queensland. His family were drovers and stockmen who lived largely off the land, growing vegetables near the house and hunting.

Around the stockmen’s fire he learned his love for storytelling and music.

When he was 10, Kev Carmody and his brother were taken from their parents and sent to a ‘Christian’ school. Without completing his senior school years he returned to hard physical rural work for the next 17 years.

His turning point came, when at the age of 33, Kev enrolled in the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education to study geography, history and music, progressing through to PhD studies at Queensland University.

To make Kev more comfortable with the oral side of his studies, his lecturers allowed him to bring along his guitar to his first tutorial to allow him time to learn to write and construct an academic essay.

Kev had never been into a library before and had never read a book.

While at university Kev Carmody also took the opportunity to acquaint himself with experimental music pioneers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Although his music would reflect his own Murri culture, expressed in the social history song traditions of Woody Guthrie and Huddie Ledbetter, Kev was never going

to be an ordinary or traditional singersongwriter.

There’s been musical imagination as well as lyrical passion.

He released his first album ‘Pillars Of Society’ in December 1987. Rolling Stone magazine described the album as “The best album ever released by an Aboriginal musician and arguably the best protest album ever made in Australia”.

Four studio albums followed: ‘Eulogy (For A Black Person)’ (Nov 90), ‘Bloodlines’ (Jul 93), ‘Images And Illusions’ (Sep 95) ‘Mirrors’ (May 04).

LPA chief executive Evelyn Richardson, said: “We are very proud to be presenting the 2019 JC Williamson Award to the legendary Kev Carmody in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the live performance industry and Australian society and his profound influence on several generations of artists and musicians”.

Kev Carmody will be presented with the 2019 JC Williamson Award at the 19th Annual Helpmann Awards.

FEDS DOUBLE DOWN ON DAM WORK The Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic over the announcement earlier this week that the Federal Government has increased its funding commitment to Emu Swamp Dam. “To have the Acting Prime Minister back in our town just two weeks after the Federal Election means that he has great faith in the Granite Belt’s future,” Chamber representative Stephen Tancred said.

“Considering all the towns and cities and states that are now clamouring for project support from the newly elected government this is an important sign that the Granite Belt Irrigation Project is definitely on the radar as an important nation building project.

“The Labor Party backed the project during the election campaign, proving that this is a project with strong bipartisan support, which now bodes well for the

Labor State government to also commit financially to the project”.

It was also pleasing that the Southern Downs mayor spoke publically at the announcement about the council possibly being interested in also obtaining water from the dam for urban use.

“This is very encouraging as the project was planned as an urban plus irrigation dam for the past 20 years, and there is no use advancing our major industry and leaving our town water users behind,” Mr Tancred said.

Attending the announcement at the Ballandean dam site was chamber vicepresident Scott Bradburn, secretary Amanda Harrold, chair of the dam subcommittee Stephen Tancred, farming rep Tim Carnell and past-president Vic Pennisi. Chamber president Bill James was an apology. ●

CEO GETS GRILLED OVER STAFF RDOS - RELIES ON ‘FEEDBACK’ The Southern Downs Regional Council is continuing to dig its heels in over a new industrial agreement with its white collar workforce and remains determined to strip back rostered day off (RDO) conditions for those employees.

Currently the council’s administrative or ‘indoor’ ‘Stream A’ employees are entitled to a ‘nine-day fortnight’ flexible working condition but the council is seeking to reduce their RDO’s to one day per month, arguing that the current arrangement is unproductive.

The case is currently before the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC). Submissions have been presented to the QIRC by both the council and The Services Union, which represents local government employees across Queensland.

A new enterprise bargaining agreement was recently struck with unions representing the council’s ‘outdoor’ or ‘Stream B’ workforce, who have retained their nine-day fortnight condition.

It is understood around 30 councils across Queensland utilise a nine-day fortnight as a standard condition of employment along with other government agencies and providers.

While the Southern Downs Regional Council has gone to great lengths to plead its case through the QIRC, transcripts of hearings before the commission held in May of this year and obtained by the Free Times

show senior council managers - including chief executive officer David Keenan received grillings by The Services Union representatives over affidavits supplied earlier to back up its case.

Mr Keenan was pressed on the details to back up the council’s claims about productivity, having argued that “demands from the community” over service levels were behind the drive to reduce RDO’s for white collar workers.

Mr Keenan was asked to produce documentary evidence to back up the council’s arguments but was forced to concede that “feedback” he had received from the community and businesses was essentially anecdotal.

“So have you got a log of those inefficiencies and difficulties?” Mr Keenan was asked by the union representative.

“I have feedback from councillors,” Mr Keenan replied.

“I have feedback from developers within the region.

“I have feedback from the community about levels of frustration experienced in trying to deal with staff when they’re not available.

“Do I have a detailed log? I do not.”

“But you’re making a statement that there’s difficulties and complaints, but you don’t have any record of them?” Mr Keenan was asked.

“I get difficulties and complaints across the organisation on various matters, and

I won’t necessarily have a log on all those matters,” he replied.

“But if you’re making a statement that these things happen, how can you evidence that’s occurring?” he was then asked.

“I can only give you the feedback that I receive from the councillors and the community in my role as CEO,” Mr Keenan replied.

“So you can’t provide any evidence of those complaints or those conversations?” he was asked.

“The conversations relate to a level of frustration in relation to particularly the development process, particularly having access to staff members, especially when the RDOs come into play, so I can only give you that feedback,” Mr Keenan responded.

Likewise the council’s Director of Corporate Services Joanne Morris was also called on during the May hearings to give evidence before the QIRC, stating that “some areas within my portfolio are very deadline-driven” and that the nine-day fortnight arrangement was unworkable.

“For example, at present the finance team are working on quarterly budget reviews, preparing the 1920 budget, the fringe benefit tax return, implementing new system modules, end of month reporting and preparing for end of financial year within 30 strict time frames,” Ms Morris stated in her evidence.

“Losing each member of the team for one whole day a fortnight adversely impacts

on the ability of the team to meet these deadlines.

“The concept of RDOs has been superseded by modern technology.

“The concept that employees require days off work to undertake errands such as banking, medical appointments, hairdressers’ appointments et cetera has been superseded by the ability to perform banking online, book appointments online.

“Additionally, many services that staff would previously utilise their RDO for are open after hours on evenings and weekends.”

Other council staff cross-examined during the May hearings conceded that no formal survey of ratepayers had been carried out seeking their views on removal of the nine-day fortnight provision.

But evidence was given that members of the public had at times given verbal feedback in respect of council staff along the lines of “youse are never at work”.

The Services Union Branch Secretary Neil Henderson told the Free Times there was strong evidence to suggest that flexible working arrangements such as a nine-day fortnight improved workforce efficiency and overall staff morale.

The full bench of the QIRC is expected to make a final ruling on the case within the next few weeks but no date has yet been set. ●

But as someone who has lived in country areas all her life - she grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales where it rained “every time you turned your back” - and spent married life in the Mudgee, Narromine, Tamworth, Warren and Walcha districts - Beatrice has seen a lot of dry spells and believes what the Southern Downs and Granite belt are experiencing right now is among the worst she’s ever seen.

She recently returned from a sevenweek trip across NSW visiting family in Bourke and Broken Hill and elsewhere in between and noted that most of the districts she travelled through are just as dry but the towns have far more relaxed water restrictions than our own council region.

“It’s basically because they have better dams and better catchments or they also have good bores,” Beatrice said.

eatrice Hawkins is no slouch when it comes to being waterwise - and of course she’s not alone in the region during this time of drought.

While the vast majority of residents and home gardeners are doing their best to comply with the current extreme water restrictions it’s always timely to issue some reminders on how to be miserly when it comes to the garden, at the very least.

The Free Times’ popular gardening columnist and active member of the Warwick Horticultural Society is accepting of the fact that her own normally flourishing garden in suburban Warwick has to be minimalist for the foreseeable future - and the only water she’s using on it is greywater from her washing machine.

Beatrice does two loads of washing per week and the 300 litres of resulting wastewater - along with water saved from the shower - is bucketed onto her mainly native plants which continue to thrive despite the long dry - along with what she terms essentially ‘weeds’, such as the vincas next to her driveway.

“And I’m told by long-term residents there’s vast quantities of bore water underneath pretty much the whole of Warwick.

“But I've lived in a lot of country areas and to me an obvious solution for Warwick would be to re-investigate the raising of, or build a new and higher wall at Connolly Dam and dramatically increase its capacity.

“It’s a perfect catchment, it’s deep and you wouldn’t be taking prime agricultural land, although it is grazing country.

Kevin Bartlett, one of Australia’s most popular racing drivers of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, has joined the line-up of motorsport legends who will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix at the Historic Leyburn Sprints on the Queensland Darling Downs in August.

Bartlett will attend the Sprints on 17-18 August with his 1982 Bathurst co-driver Colin Bond, 1981 Bathurst winner John French, Queensland ace Bill Gates and several other former drivers yet to be announced.

Now aged 79, Bartlett - or KB or Big Rev Kev, as he was known - started racing in 1958 with a Morris Minor, but went on to win Australian Drivers’ Championships in 1968 and 1969, the 1974 Bathurst 1000 and set the first 100 mile-an-hour (160 kmh) Bathurst lap in a Repco Brabham in 1967.

In a 32-year career, much of it with the Alec Mildren Racing team, Bartlett drove a range of single-seater and touring cars and contested Formula 5000 in the 1970s in several Lolas.

He earned most notoriety for his Channel Nine-sponsored Chev Camaro Z28 between 1980 and 1983, especially a spectacular rollover on top of Mount Panorama in 1982.

Sprints president Tricia Chant said Kevin Bartlett would be a big attraction at this year’s event.

Three former Warwick residents were among a number of people charged in relation to a major drug trafficking investigation in Brisbane earlier this month.

Matthew Peter Cross, 32, Andrew John Cross, 23, and Lloyd Michael Foran, 23, were among those arrested as part of ‘Operation Papa Hierarchy’, which police described as “a protracted operation targeting organised illicit drug distribution, particularly methylamphetamine and cocaine in Brisbane’s southside and bayside suburbs”.

The three appeared in court in Brisbane following their arrests and are due to face committal hearings in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday 5 August.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) media statement said the 18-month joint operation involved detectives from the Cleveland Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and the State Crime Command’s

Organised Crime Group.

“Early on the morning of Wednesday 5 June detectives executed five search warrants at addresses in the Brisbane suburbs of Morningside, Fortitude Valley, Alexandra Hills and Birkdale,” the QPS statement said.

“Police will allege that during the searches dangerous drugs including cocaine, methylamphetamine, heroin and cannabis were located along with approximately $300,000 in cash, eight vehicles with a value of approximately $227,000, phones, jewellery and gun cases.”

Charges laid against those involved include trafficking and possession of dangerous drugs and possessing property obtained from drug trafficking.

Police will also allege the group has links to the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. ●

VACCINATION THE BEST SHOT The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries has advised that the deadly Hendra virus has been confirmed in a horse at a property near Australia’s horse capital of Scone, the most southern location the infection has been detected in Australia.

A statement released by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) on

Friday 14 June says an unvaccinated mare on a Hunter Valley property developed neurological signs on Friday 7 June, three days after being confined to a yard.

“It was euthanased by the owners after becoming unresponsive,” the QRIC statement says. The department backed vaccination as the best prevention method.

Communities within the Goondiwindi region will receive support in minimising the biosecurity risk to livestock from invasive plants and animals as part of a new project.

The Pests Without Borders project is a joint initiative between Maranoa Regional Council, Goondiwindi Regional Council and Balonne Shire Council to better support landholders with pest management.

The aim of the three-year project is to work with landholders across these areas to coordinate and facilitate workshops or field days to help fill identified knowledge gaps, along with encouraging participation in coordinated control programs.

The primary focus will be landholders who live in these local government areas but who have social and business dealings outside of their local government area.

Mr Martinek will be communicating with residents by landholder surveys, stakeholder workshops, and through individual meetings and consultations. It is anticipated that during the life of the project Mr Martinek will contact or interview all individual landholders in the target area.

Newly appointed project officer Frank Martinek will be leading the project in a mentorship role.

Having spent the majority of his life working in regional Queensland in ruralbased industries, Mr Martinek will now be based in Roma with the Maranoa Regional Council.

The project will have a particular focus on the southeast corner of the Maranoa Region, northwest corner of the Goondiwindi region and the northeast area of the Balonne Shire. Mr Martinek’s role will include communicating with landholders to help clarify when and where each area meets for invasive plant and animal coordinated

BUDGET’S DUD DEAL FOR DOWNS: LISTER Southern Downs MP James Lister has called the Palaczszuk Government’s new budget handed down on Tuesday 11 June, as “an insult to the bush”.

“The state Treasurer Jackie Trad has just handed down the Palaczszuk Government’s budget, and there is not a single additional dollar for our electorate of Southern Downs,” Mr Lister said in a statement.

“The Palaczszuk Government continues to give us higher taxes, fewer jobs and more debt.

“It’s an insult to the bush.

“Taxes are up and they’re managing to increase our state’s debt from $83 billion to

a whopping $90 billion - to burden future generations with their debt - but none of it is spent in our neck of the woods.

“I have been trying to get the state Palaczszuk Government to fix dangerously degraded stretches of our highways but there’s not a single extra cent identified for this.

“The Cunningham Highway between Aratula and Cunningham’s Gap, and also between Warwick and Goondiwindi is in a dreadful state in places, and the Gore Highway between Goondiwindi and Pittsworth has sections in desperate need of rebuilding.

“But there isn’t anything in the budget to fix them - just more papering over the cracks.

“And there’s not a cent towards Emu Swamp Dam. “The Federal Government has chipped in a generous $47 million, the growers are contributing an unprecedented $24 million, and all the state government has to do is contribute is $13 million to get 700 extra jobs and economic security for our region.

“This would be the cheapest 700 jobs this government had ever created, but still they are failing to invest. Even Bill Shorten agreed to fund Emu Swamp Dam."

WHEN IT WAS MORE THAN DOLLARS I wonder if I am the only Rugby League tragic left on the planet who hankers for the days when players signed up to a club and stuck - where loyalty to your club was more important than the mighty dollar.

The window of opportunity to trade NRL players remains just ajar and closes on June 30. So while results and form in the NRL games pitch and turn like a corkscrew on the ocean during a storm, the transfer whispers are becoming rumbles.

The mayhem of player managers and not so secret negotiations is in full swing and if the rumour mill is correct the game is set to see perhaps the biggest mid season upheaval yet.

Clubs are window shopping for players and are happy to play snap with other clubs to get the desired results.

Some moves are already done and dusted. New Zealand captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has jumped off the Penrith ship and is now in the Bulldogs kennel.

The Bunnies we know have secured James Roberts and Kodi Nikorima now finds himself an unexpected Warrior.

The Panthers could be about to make some further changes pre June30. Tyrone Peachey is apparently keen to ditch the Titans and return to Penrith only months after his yes, no, yes to the Gold Coast.

The Tigers are also rumoured to be hunting some new blood. They are expected to sign veteran Tim Mannah who will slip away from the Eels before the deadline.

There is plenty of chat surrounding one of the Burgess boys with rumours George could be on the move refusing to go away going away.

The Cowboys apparently have a full back on their shopping list and the Eels looking for a forward. Trent Merrin may return to the Dragons and so it goes on and on and on. According to some well placed sources this is only just the tip of the iceberg.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes between clubs and those magic men behind the players - their managers.

Fans at this stage have little or no clue if their favourite player at their favourite club is likely to be there post June 30.

It used to be June 30 got you thinking about tax; now it’s more taxing thinking about your NRL team and who may be in or out of the side.

Strap yourselves in; things could get really crazy in the next 10 days.

Of course before June 30 we Queenslanders will be too busy cheering the Maroons home in Perth. Up the Mighty Maroons - at least Queenslanders know who is in that team.

Casey SHOCK LOSS Former rugby league players in Stanthorpe and from the days of the old Warwick and District Rugby League competition were shocked and saddened early in the week to learn of the death of former Stanthorpe Player Coach Ron (Darkie) Lewis. Lewis a former Bulimba Cup player for both Toowoomba and Brisbane coached a very successful Stanthorpe Rugby League side in 1973.

Players from that era were looking forward to catching up with Darkie who was one of the real characters of the game at the upcoming Centenary of League celebrations in Stanthorpe.

The team behind the Classic competitions say it has been a pleasure to see so many people having a great time and learning about lawn bowls. With players ranging in age for 10-70, the camaraderie among the group has been a special highlights.

Of course there has also been other club competitions played. In the singles competition Nick Farmer had a 25-15 win over Dunga Sullivan. Myrtle (who is on her way to her 90th birthday) showed Butzy how it is done defeating him 26-14.

In the pairs comp Aaron and Philpsy proved too strong for Marg Thompson and Geoff and scored a 22-12 win.

A reminder to everyone to get your name in for club selected social bowls this Sunday to celebrate Myrtles 90th Birthday. Bowls begin at 10.00am and will be followed by a BBQ lunch - will there be cake? You’ll have to get to Tanny to find out.

BUSY BUSY CROQUET Another busy Tuesday morning on the Croquet Court in Stanthorpe for the Association Croquet games. Joy Newman and playing partner Andrea Denkewitz took on Effey Russell and Peter Tunbridge and score a 25-17 win. Carol Verwey and Jenny Tunbridge played a tough game against Heather Widderick and Grace Howard.

Verwey and Tunbridge scored a 23-18 win on a day when all players looked to be in good touch.

A small group turned out for the Ricochet games on Thursday morning.

Despite the small numbers games were very competitive.

Carol Verwey played a solo hand against Marion McCulloch and Peter Tunbridge and continued her good form from Association Croquet. In an entertaining game McCulloch scored her first break of three hoops in a row since she began playing.

However honours went to Carol. The score 26-19 in a game where she also scored two brakes of two on her way to the win.

KERR SHOWS GOOD WET TRACK FORM Stanthorpe golfers were faced with damp conditions on Saturday when they teed.

The moisture was more a surprise than a hindrance and absolutely no-one was complaining as play progressed in the single Stableford competition. Saturday’s round was played in conjunction with the Finch Cups for the men and ladies.

Alan Kerr found the conditions to his liking recording some excellent wet track form.Kerr was the only player in the round to play below his handicap.

With forty shots on the outward trip for 20 points and 22 points on the run home he returned a winning score of 42 points and ensures his name is engraved on the Finch Cup. Kerr also picked up the Pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 Club captain, Richard Reardon finished runner up with a score of 36 points.

In the Ladies event it was Margie Locke who returned the best score. A score of 34 points handed her the win and she also has her name on the Finch Cup as the 2019 Ladies winner. After a count back Lyn Ludlow got the nod as the runner up in the Ladies event.

Saturday’s event was sponsored by club stalwarts Tom and Trish Fittock who provided some great prizes for the winning contingent.

Len Leigh collected the pin at three.

Keith Jones was successful at 12 while the pin at 17 went unclaimed. Aaron Simmers grabbed the remaining Pro Pin at 9/18.

Annelle Batterham held the ladies pin at 12 and Neta Thouard had the best approach at 17. Figuring in the Men’s run down were Barry Hughes (35), Ian Pickering (33), Keith Barnett (33) and Aaron Simmers (33).

Linda Kelly (32) and Trish Fittock (31) each picked up a ball in the Ladies’ rundown.

4 Water Supplies are the sponsors of the Single Stroke event this Saturday. Tee off is from 11.00am and as usual there is a time sheet on the board at the club house.

SPORTERS REGULARS IN THE FRAME Two of Sporters regular golfers, Terry Byrnes and Paul Armstrong were in good touch last Sunday finishing the round as winner and runner up respectively. Stewart Rayner returned the best gross score and also picked up the Pin Shot at the 12th.

Marg Locke fresh from a good win in the Ladies Finch Cup in Saturday’s competition featured in the rundowns as did Steve McEvoy. There were no takers for the Pin at 17 or the Pro Pin however a couple of meat trays found homes with golf stalwarts Aaron Simmers and Ray Thorn. If the weather forecast for this Sunday is correct Sporters had best rug up before teeing off between 8.00am and 8.30am.

TANNY TERRIFIC There was a great roll up at the Tannymorel Bowls club on Friday night for the much anticipated final round of the Tanny Classic.

The big crowd on hand to see who would be crowned champion and who could get their hands on the cash.

The final round of Tanny Four 2019 did not disappoint with results going right to the wire - the winner not clear until, not the last end but the last bowl.

Fraser Grayson, Lochy Fritz, Coire and Aaron had a 9-5 win over Milly Weier, Steph Shelly, Ryan Boal and Fritzy.

Brodie Weier, Boalsy and Thommo scored a knockout blow beating their opponents Maddy Weier, Reba and Bretto 10-8.

Those all important scores left Lochy Fritz and Reba locked on 19 points at the top of the scoreboard and joint winners of Tanny Four 2019 and of course sharing the cash.

It was a case of what might have been for Lochy Boal who along with Cody Muller and Damo Boal suffered a 24-15 loss to Jack Grayson, Steve Locke and Weiery. Boal finished tied for second place with Jessie Wallace who with playing partners finished the Classic with a 15-7 win.

Shaggs O’Mara was a member of that winning team. The win did little to improve his overall performance however he did get to take home the cash for the Horses Butt.

and turn the Cowboys away.

Trailing 14-0 Warwick appeared to begin the second half with a different mindset.

Ben Sullivan put the home side on the board only a minute into the second half and when captain Mick Bloomfield converted the Cowboys were off and running.

Seventeen minutes into the second half the Cowboys had hit the lead (18-14).

The game developed into a real arm wrestle. Valleys found themselves in possession in the Cowboys territory and after being consistently repelled by the Cowboys defence. The Roosters finally split the defence and Zac Miles crossed to level the scores. A successful Valley’s conversion with less than five minutes on the clock saw the lead swing back to the visitors.

Valleys needed only draw the game to secure their spot in this weekend’s game but they were intent on an outright win.

The Roosters showed why they were Premiers in 2018 and winners of the 2018 Madsen Rasmussen trophy when Dylan Chown scored just two minutes from the final siren.

The Roosters play to the death mentality held them in good stead in crunch games last season and was on display at Fr Ranger Oval.

Wattles are playing excellent football this season but will need to play every second of the 80 minutes to secure a win this weekend.

In another close contest Andrea Denekwitz snuck home with a 26-25 win over Eric McCulloch.

Conditions were less than inviting for the Gateball group last week however five dedicated players took to the court.

Andrea Denkewitz, Grace Howard and Heather Widderick formed Team One, Their opponents in Team Two Les Williams and Jenny Tunbridge.

Team Two finished the morning with bragging rights after they won three of the four games contested.

They opened play with an 18-10 win in the first game. Game two was a very tight affair and the teams finished locked at 8 all.

Team one got the nod in the count back but it would be their only joy for the day. Team Two wrapped up a good day on the court scoring wins in the next two games (13-11 and 12-11). Heather Widderick although on the losing team for most of the morning was one of the best players on the day.

RATS ON A RUN The Warwick Water Rats have continued their good form this season in the Darling Downs Rugby Union B-grade competition.

Last week they put together back to back wins scoring an impressive 60-5 win over USQ. That wins comes on the back of another good performance beating Goondiwindi 26-10.

Warwick who are eyeing off a place in the semi finals will this weekend travel to take on Dalby on their home turf.

The Water Rats will be hoping their good form continues as they Endeavour to knock off another of the top sides.

It has been a much improved season for the Rats who have only been beaten on one occasion this season.

This weekend they will line up without Kai Etherington who suffered a broken hand in last weekend’s game.Lindsay Payne must also be in doubt after he suffered an ankle injury in the warm ups prior to the clash with USQ POPULAR MEETING A SUCCESS The Killarney Cup race meeting hosted by the Warwick Turf Club last Saturday was well supported by owners, trainers, jockeys and the public.

10 runners faced the starter in the Killarney Cup, a Benchmark 60 Handicap over 1500 metres and the feature race on the programme.

Brooke Mackie the three year old Show a Heart gelding carried 58.5kg and franked his good recent Toowoomba form.

The Killarney Cup meeting again proved to be one of the most popular race dates on the Warwick calendar. The next scheduled meeting at Allman Park is on August 20.

WATTLES DOMINATE The mid season Madsen Rasmussen and President’s Cup games will be played this weekend at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba.

After wins last week in the TRL round 11 Valleys and Wattles will battle it out for the Madsen-Rasmussen trophy. The game is a repeat of last year’s game and also the 2018 grand final.

Wattles will be keen for redemption after being beaten in both games last season in the shadows of full time. Both sides take good form into the 2019 clash.

Wattles last weekend were fresh after a bye the previous week and thrashed Oakey 76-4 in their game at Platz Oval.

In a tryathon Wattles piled on the 13 tries. .Matt Duggan made a welcome return to the side after recovering from an ankle injury. He added the extras on 12 occasions in a great display of goal kicking.

Leading the way in the try scoring stakes was Michael Marshall who had a field day on the wing scoring four tries.

Nick van der Poel opened the scoring in the seventh minute and soon after had a double as the Warriors completely dominated a depleted Oakey outfit.

Despite leading 50 nil at half time Wattles did not take their foot off the accelerator adding another five tries in the second half in a totally dominant display sending an ominous warning to the Roosters.

St George visitor Pat’s Girl started $2 favourite in the race and gave punters plenty to cheer about when she saluted for connections. The five year old mare had good form for the race having won at Ipswich in early May and finishing a handy third at Toowoomba the previous week.

The winner was well ridden by apprentice Nick Keal for trainer Warren Morris who owns the horse in partnership with Mr Hall.

Stellar Jewel ($8) who was slowly out of the barriers and Kira’s Beat (($13) filled the minor placings.

Connections of Show ’Me were quizzed by stewards after the equal favourite finished at the tail of the field.

Show ’Em’s rider apprentice Brooke Mackie told stewards the gelding failed to run on in the straight under his big weight.

The meeting opened with the running of the Killarney Coop Maiden over the short 800metre distance.

The Oakey trained Jacko’s a Natural ($6) having only his sixth race start broke through for his maiden victory. The gelding trained by Shane Green was ridden by Noriyuki Nishio The Angus Wickham Memorial also a Maiden was run over the 1300m distance.

Warwick galloper Thellyson was a late scratching at the barrier after he was found to be lame when he arrived at the start gates.

Another Oakey galloper Mask Stepenny gave Nick Keal the first of a winning double when he scored a narrow win over Teya ($4) and Hugs n Kisses who finished close up in third place.
