Queen’s honour One of Alan Collier's countless enduring deeds has been leading the charge for a state-of-theart Dandenong High School.

With the 100-year-old school's long course of modernisation near completion, Mr Collier has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honour list.

He joins three others in our region recognised on the list - Alf Goldburg of Dandenong, Roger Lord of Endeavour Hills and George Raphael of Keysborough.

Mr Collier has been president of the Dandenong High School Council for 24 years. In that time, he strongly pushed for the merger of three

high schools to create a world-class facility.

"The young people in Greater Dandenong have the right to the same sort of facilities as in the city.

"Now we just want to see it finished."

Recently, the State Government committed $8.5 million towards completing new STEM, canteen and food technology facilities at the school.

He's been part of a long list of community groups, such as being founder of the former Dandenong North Youth Club, created in the 1980's to provide sports and activities for 800 youth a week.

"It was run by the community for the community," he said.

He has also been an active Rotarian for the past 25 years.

Now the president of the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society, he has been part of organising Dandenong Show for the past 20 years.

The former timber sales and marketing manager certainly has a lot on his plate in retirement. But as Mr Collier says: "If you want to do something then you make time to do it."

He and wife Vicki have lived in Dandenong all their married lives, and both active community servants.

"You've got no idea what you get out of the community by doing community work.

"I've met terrific people in the community

all the time."

A common thread in Mr Collier's endeavours is helping youth. He believes young people's future shouldn't be decided by their upbringing or socio-economic disadvantage.

"I'm really humbled by it," Mr Collier said of his OAM award.

"I never did any of it for any recognition. It's one of my beliefs that you have to give back to the community.

"I think you've got to make the world a bit better by the time you leave it."

Townhouses: green light

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 66-townhouse development proposed for a greenfield site in Keysborough has been given the all-clear by the state’s planning tribunal.

In his ruling on 29 May, Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Michael Nelthorpe overturned Greater Dandenong Council’s refusal of the application for 258 Hutton Road.

Developer Eastar Group scaled-down its proposal from 74 dwellings, reducing the number of dwelling bedrooms and introducing a small pocket park and more landscaped

space on the 3.4-hectare site.

The council remained opposed to the revised proposal, due to overdevelopment, neighbourhood character and urban design concerns.

It opposed the “sub standard” narrow street widths, with little space for street trees or onsite parking.

The council argued against the streetscapes being dominated by garage doors, the small private yards and a “futile” pocket park.

Mr Nelthorpe said none of these points were grounds for refusal.

The proposed density was in accord with the Keysborough South Development Plan, despite not offering a mix of conventional and medium-density lots.

“I disagree (that it is an overdevelopment) because it broadly implements the Development Plan’s principles when viewed in the context of the entire area.”

The plan also provides for a network of habitat corridors and wetlands and improved flood storage capacity.

Mr Nelthorpe noted more than 38 per cent of the site was set aside for public open space

as part of a linear open space network.

Another 8.5 per cent was set aside for a tree reserve along Hutton Road.

Neighbourhood character was not relevant due to the site being vacant.

Mr Nelthorpe was concerned that the development “turns its back” on the linear openspace reserve.

“I have required the townhouses adjacent to the reserve to be redesigned in a reverse living format to better address the reserve.”

He ordered extra parking spaces at the pocket park.

Art opens up new worlds for these new Australians

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Art has opened up a whole inner world for refugee students at AMES Australia in Dandenong.

Many had not drawn before, let alone believed that they could draw well.

Yet their work, exhibited proudly in their classroom, is proof of their progression under volunteer tutor David Shears.

The 12-week class was introduced to broaden students' horizons on top of their regular English-language lessons, AMES youth co-ordinator Karen Bull said.

Art was a bonding experience for students who hail from Afghan, Cambodian, Indonesian, Chinese, South Sudanese and Sri Lankan backgrounds, Ms Bull said.

"There were a lot of laughs, especially when doing the portraits.

"It's great especially for the students who haven't had opportunities like this in their countries of origin.

"It's amazing how people took to it."

‘Family club’ finds a revival No to violence, yes to hope

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A fledgling soccer club that was ransacked during its first-ever weekend of games has been revived by a wide league of supporters, clubs and sponsors.

South East United FC hosted a joyous iftar dinner on 2 June, gathering together the many who supported the club in a bleak time.

"To see everyone who helped us in the same room - the unity that has created has been unbelievable," a grateful club chairperson Sinan Akkurt said.

Burglars had left little behind after they broke down the WJ Turner Reserve clubroom doors in Noble Park North in the early hours of Monday 8 April.

They swiped the brand-new club's player shirts, socks and shorts, soccer equipment, chocolates and $2500 raised the day before to support the club's families in need and to help players afford boots.

Even the club's fryer - its main source of income - was damaged beyond repair.

That night, the mens team had been out celebrating a magnificent 6-0 first round win - then Mr Akkurt got the dreaded call from police and broke down.

"A lot of committee members had sacrificed a lot of family time to get to this point," Mr Akkurt said.

"We hadn't yet paid for the uniforms (that were stolen) and we'd now have to order a new set.

"It was more the disappointment that anyone would do this to us.

"I just broke down and I thought it was all over. I thought we'd have to shut down."

But then Melbourne's soccer community rallied behind them.

Clubs including South Yarra, St Kilda, Morwell Pegasus, Hume United, Casey Comets, Brighton, and Malvern United as well as the Oakleigh supplier Only Sports were offering help.

ment, a line machine, money and a fryer, pie warmer and bain-marie.

"The help has been so overwhelming," Mr Akkurt said.

"Even when we said we're back to where we left off, they've helped to even get us further ahead."

Mr Akkurt says the outpouring might be because South East United was a unique club.

It was set up as a "family club", not running for a profit but to help the community.

The club is a social hub for men, women, boys and girls - more transfixed on fun than getting wins on the pitch.

Since forming in October, the club already has five junior boys, mens and womens sides.

There are plans for further sides particularly for girl players.

"We want our girls to get the same recognition as our men would.

"Our first women's team is made up of our wives. We said from the beginning if we don't have our wives involved, it's just another boy's club.

"We wanted a family club - not like where you're just getting drunk and swearing every weekend. We wanted to make it a home where kids feel safe."

It is also a low-cost club for talented youth who can't afford National Premier League registration fees of up to $2500.

In recent weeks, sponsor businesses have provided food and drinks for free clubroom dinners for its families after training. Many couldn't afford to otherwise go out for a meal, Mr Akkurt said.

"We grew up playing outside. The current generation of children are there on the iPad or telephone with their head in a game.

"We want them getting them out of the house, out of the bedroom and out creating friendships among them like we had.

"We don't worry too much about results, as long as at the end of the day you can smile, give a hug and say have a good day."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The State Government has announced $470,000 for family violence prevention programs targeting African communities.

Among the 15 recipients are Community in Abundance (CIA) and African Women's and Families Network (AWAFN) working in Melbourne's South East.

With $80,000 funding, the CIA will work with No to Violence to support South Sudanese community members to host workshops on family violence, gender equality, respectful relations and an overview of the legal system.

Federation of South Sudanese Associations in Victoria spokesperson and counsellor Deng Kuor said the impacts of controlling behaviour, and verbal and emotional abuse were not widely understood.

He said 'blaming' was also an underlying issue - the blaming of partners, the public or alcohol for one's behaviour.

Within CALD communities, some may even "hide behind" their culture.

The key was for people to be accountable to themselves, Mr Kuor said.

It was also important to remember the difficulties and uncertainties faced by refugees, such as homelessness.

"You don't know your future, you don't know how tomorrow will look like and how it will change.

"They have horrible things in their life and you need to give them more hope."

The AWAFN will receive $75,000 for its Strengthening Community Capacity on Prevention program with various African communities in Melbourne's West and South-East.

It will host training and information sessions to raise awareness on family violence, respectful relationships and build links with family violence providers and supports.

The State Government states that it is aiming to forge links between mainstream family violence services and diverse communities.

"This is about helping Victoria's diverse communities keep women and children safe from the scourge of family violence."

Dandenong MP and Prevention of Family Violence Minister Gabrielle Williams said the funding would help in the Government's "landmark reforms to stamp out family violence".

"Family violence effects all communities and it's critical to not only have government programs but to support community led prevention work to achieve change."

The State Government says it is rolling out $14 million over four years for its multicultural family violence package.

Court sequel faced by violent player A former state-level soccer player who severely broke an opponent's leg during an illtempered futsal clash has escaped conviction.

Michael Danilov, from Melbourne's South East, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to recklessly causing injury to the opponent after they had clashed several times during the match in March 2016.

As the pair contested a ball for the last time, Danilov - a former team captain and threetime Victorian representative - kicked out and broke the victim's leg.

The referee red-carded Danilov, judging the kick as too high to be a genuine attempt at the ball, the court heard.

In sentencing on 31 May, Judge Gabriele Cannon found there was no evidence that Danilov had earlier threatened to break the victim's leg.

She sentenced Danilov on the basis that he said words to the effect of "keep it up and he'll be hurt".

"But kicking his leg with enough force to break it was no accident, as you've admitted," Judge Cannon told Danilov.

"Nor was it intentional.

"It was foolish and it was reckless."

One of the victim's teammates recalled Danilov saying "I told him this would happen and he should know his limitations.

"If he can't take a hit he shouldn't be going into the challenges.

"If (the victim) was going to play rough, he should expect rough back."

Judge Cannon noted that the umpire had been losing control of the "rather willing" match marred by "sledging" and "antagonism".

She said that the victim played in a "most vigorous manner" but couldn't be blamed for his injury.

Danilov "as a mature player of significant stature" should have been more "restrained", Judge Cannon said.

"I accept you would not normally act in the

way you did but on this particular day your conduct was dreadful."

The victim, according to his statement to the court, had since endured a "terrible" toll.

At the time, he'd just started to recover from a stroke that afflicted his other leg.

He took nearly four months off work without pay, and gave up playing sport due to the "shooting pains" in his broken leg.

"It's only now - three years later - he feels like he can walk as well as he could before the offence was committed," Judge Cannon said.

However, there was no "utility" in convicting Danilov - whose rehabilitation prospects were "excellent".

The judge noted Danilov had "heart-felt" remorse, no prior offences, and endured three years of legal delay.

Danilov was put on a two-year good behaviour bond, and ordered to donate $1500 to Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

Rania is putting MS in the spotlight

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Diagnosed at 19, Rania Melhem struggled to open up about her "invisible illness".

But a decade later, the MS Ambassador has come to realise that writing and speaking out about the disease Multiple Sclerosis does a power of good - for herself and others.

"Since becoming an ambassador, I haven't been able to stop talking about having MS," Ms Melhem said.

"It's a great way of dealing and coping with everything MS does to you because it's so unpredictable."

At first the diagnosis was devastating, especially since her sister had been diagnosed with MS six years earlier.

The Dandenong North resident tried to hide her energy-sapping illness. She finished a university degree, worked full-time for a major bank and married.

But as the responsibilities mounted, she suffered a terrifying relapse in which she temporarily lost feeling in her legs and down her left side.

Support organisation Multiple Sclerosis Limited was there to help. It organised an occupational therapist, set up a home office as well as physiotherapy and myotherapy sessions.

It suggested Ms Melhem to start writing a blog.

She says this proved cathartic. It was great to help others with MS - many who didn't know about the support services offered by MS Limited.

Not just because its multitude of symptoms are often not obvious from the outside, but

also because few know much about it.

It can be hard to explain when you feel fatigued, feel stabbing nerve pain, have involuntary muscle spasms and need time off from work.

"You might look fine on the outside but feel horrific," Ms Melhem says.

"One day you can be feeling OK. "The next day you can't feel one of your limbs, or have blurred vision, or not being able to string words and sentences together.

"You come home tired from work and sometimes even turning a light on is difficult.

"You can feel on a different planet or universe because your mind is just so fatigued."

Throughout, she's tried to remain positive, and not to get "bogged down" in her unknown prognosis.

In the past decade, Ms Melhem's treatment has evolved as medical breakthroughs are made.

Yoga helps to centre herself and keep the negative thoughts at bay. She "fights" on for her supportive husband and family.

"I'm in pain the majority of the time but I put everything into perspective.

"I'm always grateful for the fact that I've got feeling in my legs.

"I'm lucky I can still walk.

"While you are not feeling so great, you know that things will be better again."

Echo and SOG police swoop on five Five men have been arrested in Dandenong by police from the anti-bikie Echo Taskforce and Special Operations Group.

The five were arrested shortly after 1.30pm on Tuesday 4 June as part of an ongoing investigation into stolen vehicles and firearm offences, police say.

A gun and two stolen vehicles were seized by police. The men were being questioned by police, according to a police statement.

"The investigation remains ongoing and further information will be provided once it is operationally appropriate to do so."

Man escapes supermarket robbers A man has escaped an attempted robbery outside a Dandenong supermarket.

The 33-year-old was surrounded by three males as he walked outside the Coles supermarket on Princes Highway, Dandenong about 4.30pm on Tuesday 28 May. One of the males tried to grab the victim, telling him "I'll take your s***".

The man has managed to walk free from the males, with none of his property stolen. The offenders were described as African appearance.

Axe attack at alleged drug-den An alleged drug den in Dandenong has been discovered by police after it was violently invaded by an axe-wielding group of males.

Six males arrived at the house in a white Toyota Prado and a matte-black Mercedes sedan about 8.45am on Friday 31 May. A 26-year-old man was home alone at the time, as the intruders smashed several front windows and forced open the front door.

The resident, armed with a baseball bat, chased the males back to their cars.

During the minor scuffle, the axe was dropped to the ground.

The resident wielded the axe, smashing it into the Mercedes' windscreen.

The intruders drove off with the axe still lodged in the windscreen.

They were described as Islander appearance.

Police attended the house, discovering an alleged commercial quantity of the drug 'ice' and 1,4-butandiol and a trafficable quantity of heroin and cannabis.

Police also seized gold and jewellery believed to be the proceeds of crime.

The resident was charged with drug offences and remanded to appear at court on 26 August.

A man has been charged after bars of gold, cash and a commercial amount of drugs were allegedly discovered at a Dandenong home.

Greater Dandenong CIU detectives arrested the 26-year-old Dandenong man during a raid on the De Villiers Street home on Friday 31 May. They seized significant amounts of 'ice' and cannabis, several gold bullions and a large amount of cash that are alleged to be proceeds of crime, police say.

His charges include two counts of trafficking a commercial quantity of illicit drugs and dealing in the proceeds of crime.

The man was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 26 August.

A second 26-year-old man was arrested, interviewed and released pending summons.

Police raid uncovers drugs, gold bullions

He’s always on the lookout to help out

By Cam Lucadou-Wells At 92, Alf Goldburg is bright, talkative and devoted to walking to the shops to pick up his daily newspaper.

Awarded an Order of Australia Medal in this year's Queen's Birthday honours list, the Dandenong grandfather also continues to serve.

The former footwear sales manager and loyal ALP volunteer remains active in Noble Park RSL sub-branch as a committee member and Anzac Day and Remembrance Day token seller.

He also brings in newspapers for the Dandenong and District Historical Society archives each week, and visits needy families as a Springvale Benevolent Society charity volunteer.

"You've got to keep doing things - use it or lose it," Mr Goldburg said.

He also brings copies of the Dandenong Star Journal in for an elderly neighbour after deliveries to her home had ceased. They enjoy a weekly cup of tea together with each other.

It's important to keep a look-out for elderly neighbours, many living on their own, he says.

He also puts some food aside for nearby families that he knows are struggling.

As well as reading The Age every day, Mr Goldburg keeps an ear on Vision Australia Radio - which reads out stories from newspapers of the day.

He tells of a recent article on the plight of a homeless man in Melbourne he read. "It's always worth reading these things.

"You think that's life but you've got to do the right thing and help people.

"I don't want people to go without."

The recipe for funds

His father was a returned World War I veteran, who later served in World War II. Yet Mr Goldburg's younger sisters and brother being put in a home because his family couldn't afford to rear them.

Understandably, Mr Goldburg admires and has helped with the vital welfare work performed at Noble Park RSL. He and wife Audrey have been a fixture at their Heatherton Road home in Dandenong for more than 60 years.

When he first moved in, he and his wife Audrey's home was surrounded by paddocks.

They kept Bantam chooks.

He's welcomed his neighbourhood opening up to scores of new nationalities.

"They're all human beings. I don't care who comes here to live, as long as you abide by our law."

He has also served several bedrock groups that have since closed, such as the former charity Dandenong Benevolent Society.

He volunteered in the long-standing Noble Park Drug Action Community Forum, as well as its successor the recently-closed Noble Park Community Action Forum.

Those groups collectively served Noble Park for more than three decades.

A Keysborough baker is doing her bit to ‘raise dough’ for charity.

As part of the Raise Dough campaign, Kerry Tang is cooking up batches of cupcakes - in either cookie-and-cream or red velvet flavours.

All funds raised go to Reach Out, a digital helpline for young people with mental health issues.

Ms Tang, a self-taught baker, initially knew nothing more than cooking with a packet mix.

She has since perfected her recipes, founding a business Cuppy and Cake.

Life has challenges but it’s important to find positivity and to look after your physical and mental wellbeing, she says.

Along with practising mindfulness, Ms Tang finds baking therapeutic.

“It’s a chance to slow down, perfect my recipe and get it just right.”

Enjoying all that he does

By Danielle Kutchel After retiring from an exciting and fulfilling accounting career, Roger Lord OAM decided he wanted to spend his retirement helping people.

His desire to give back to the community led him to the Riding for the Disabled Association Victoria (RDA), which was looking for a treasurer.

"I worked in accounting all my life, so I have all sorts of experience and I thought 'if I can't do anything else, I can do that and help them,'" he explained.

The Endeavour Hills resident said his skill set was a little more unusual in volunteers but was much needed.

"And frankly, I enjoy doing it, it's a way I can help and ... make a difference."

'Enjoy what you do' is something of a mantra for the 72 year old, who has allowed the motto to drive him to various volunteer positions since retiring.

He is currently on the finance committee of Beaconhills College and was a member of the board from 1998 to 2018. He also assists Fernlea House in Emerald as a treasurer and board member.

"Plus, they've got an op shop in Emerald and we enjoy gardening, so we go up there and do their garden which has got nothing whatsoever to do with accounting, but we enjoy doing it!" he laughed.

"And that's the crucial thing, if you enjoy doing something, you will do it."

Mr Lord has also assisted the disability community in other ways, including by setting up a classroom at Beaconhills for after school

Roger Lord OAM said the "crucial thing" is to always enjoy what you do. 194399 care for children with a disability.

In 2011 Mr Lord was named the City of Casey's Citizen of the Year, and last year he became a Life Member of Beaconhills College.

Now, he can add 'Medal of the Order of Australia' to his list of achievements too, having been included on the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to people with a disability through sport, and to the community.

He plans to continue assisting the community in various capacities for as long as he can - and as long as he can still enjoy it.

"It's selfish really because it's a smorgasbord; they're quite different and what makes it more fun is the variety. It's a good mix, and as long as I can, I'll keep doing it," he said.

Satisfaction in serving

By Danielle Kutchel An intense interest in people has driven George Raphael OAM to give back to the community for more than 70 years.

The 93 year old Keysborough resident and former naval serviceman has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours for service to the community in a range of roles.

He is a founding member of the Aspendale/ Mordialloc Probus Club, which was the first combined club in Victoria, and is serving his third year as president after having previously held roles like treasurer or outings organiser.

Mr Raphael is also a fourth generation Freemason, having joined up when he was 19.

"It's been my life blood over 74 years, I've made a number of friends through there," he said.

He's involved himself in many of the organisation's activities over the years, including being part of a taskforce that helped restore fencing for farmers after bushfires tore through Bairnsdale many years ago. He also helped raise money for Odyssey House, a rehabilitation facility for people struggling with drug or alcohol dependence.

As well, Mr Raphael played a role in the development of the South Eastern Masonic Centre, watching as a volunteer when the first sod was turned and continuing to volunteer until last year.

Giving back to the community gives Mr Raphael a deep sense of satisfaction.

"It's hard to put into words some of the thrills you get out of things," he said.

"In serving my fellow man, I get satisfaction seeing the satisfaction they derive from the assistance I give them. You get back out a lot of what you put in it."

He's spent many years "putting in", including in his career with the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. Among his proudest achievements is being responsible for intro-

Despite his many achievements, being awarded an OAM is something of a surprise.

"It certainly wasn't something I expected, you don't expect too many things when you're in your 90s!"he chuckled.

"But I feel very proud of it and it's nice to know that some of your service has been recognised by others."

The newly renovated Keysborough hall has been damaged during a private function on the weekend of June 5. Holes were punched in the walls and a fire extinguisher was stolen. The news angered Greater Dandenong councillor Dale Wilson who spent many years lobbying for improvements to the hall. The council spent $400,000 renovating the premises earlier this year, to provide a new home for Keysborough Senior Citizens Club. But a group who hired the hall last Saturday week caused a great deal of damage.

They then attempted to replace the walls themselves. The council's facilities manager, Mr Howard Winter, said the council was not happy with the repairs and would use the bond money

Two injured on freeway

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two people have been injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Monash Freeway, Dandenong North.

Ambulance paramedics were called to the crash in the city-bound lanes at Stud Road about 6.50am on Wednesday, 5 June.

A woman in her twenties was taken to The Alfred hospital with suspected neck and leg injuries.

Another person was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

It follows a serious five-vehicle crash at the South Gippsland Freeway entry to the Monash the morning before, in which a woman in her 20s was critically injured.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three weeks out of jail, a serial offender was back in custody after a large haul of drugs and a loaded rifle were seized by police at his Narre Warren North home.

Nigel Conroy, 43, was at home on the oneacre block on Belgrave-Hallam Road when police raided at 6pm on 13 July as part of their investigations into his girlfriend.

He was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of GHB (4.8 kilograms), trafficking 57 grams of ice, and possessing a firearm while prohibited.

He was also accused of possessing $7980 found in a satchel, pockets and wallet as proceeds of crime, as well as 19 oxycodone tablets and an electrical bypass.

Conroy admitted to police that he bought and sold drugs partly to fund his addiction - of up to one gram of ice a day.

He claimed he didn't know who owned the cash-laden satchel or the firearm.

At the time, Conroy had just served a 220day jail sentence and was three weeks into a community corrections order.

Sentencing judge Susan Pullen of the Victorian County Court said on 4 June that Conroy failed to take up the chance of a rehabilitative CCO. He had instead moved back in with his drug-addicted girlfriend and relapsed.

Judge Pullen had "reservations" about Conroy's remorse given his "disturbing, lengthy and relevant" criminal history.

Despite being put on "numerous" rehabilitative orders, Conroy had been unable to overcome his addiction, Judge Pullen said.

"I have real concerns about your rehabilitative prospects. 'Guarded' would be arguably a generous description."

Police also raided Conroy's partner's Dandenong apartment. She and Conroy, both addicted to drugs, had been together for a "turbulent" year.

She was charged with "very different offences" to Conroy, and jailed for six months with a 12-month community corrections order.

Judge Pullen noted Conroy's loving upbringing and his struggles at Berwick High School where he left at Year 9. He was allegedly sexually abused as a child by a relative.

His drug history started with cannabis at 11, graduating to cocaine, speed and then ice.

Conroy was jailed for up to seven years, ineligible for parole for four-years-and-sixmonths. His term included 326 days of presentence detention.

Stolen car dumped after lounge crash

By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees At first, Chantal George thought what there had been a loud crash out in the Eumemmerring street in the wet, early hours of Monday 3 June.

Still awake at 1.30am, she ran to investigate - and then noticed her front lounge room.

Poking through its shattered front windows was the nose of a white Volkswagen Golf, headlights on and wipers running.

She called for her husband Chris to phone for an ambulance to the Doveton Avenue address.

By the time she got outside to assist, whoever was in the stolen crashed car had fled.

Fortunately Chris had not fallen asleep on the lounge-room couch this particular night, she said.

Two of their sons were also home asleep.

“I’ve said to my husband that one day someone is going to come through that window,” a shaken Ms George said.

Police say a Hawthorn man reported that the Golf was stolen, with the driver still at large.

The cause of the crash and the circumstances of the theft were still under investigation.

Narre Warren SES that night boarded up the extensive damage.

It got the call out while attending a truck that lost a load of timber and plants on Abeckett Road, Narre Warren.

“This was the second car through a house in a matter of days that we’ve responded to,“ Narre Warren SES spokesman Aaron Heathcote said.

“Last Wednesday evening a car hit a house in Cranbourne. Thankfully there were no injuries.”

For Ms George, the crash came on the back of a series of personal setbacks this year.

“It was the last thing I needed.

“I’ve got the family support. Everyone at work and school have rang up.

“It helps to have the community around you.”

Parking officer pushes the limit - it’s fine

By Danielle Kutchel A sharp-eyed Dandenong citizen has questioned the rules governing parking officers after spotting one booking a member of the public for parking illegally - whilst also apparently parking illegally himself.

The citizen, who wished to remain anonymous, said the area has limited car parking options for staff and customers.

“Parking officers don’t venture down our street too often which is OK because we don’t really have a problem with people illegally parking. The parking officers however appear to be quite opportunistic and magically appear if parking is even more limited.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

Residents have a say in the naming of the impending Endeavour Hills Community Precinct.

The shortlist of names for the $3.36 million activity square are MESH (an acronym of Mingle Explore Skate Hub), Hillscape Park, Binbeal Park and Gradient 22.

Hillscape Park is a reference to the suburb’s hilly topography, Binbeal Park is inspired by the name of Bunjil the Eagle’s son and Gradient 22 lends its name from the future skate park’s steep angles.

The stores behind the names are further detailed on Casey Council’s website Casey Conversations.

Stage 2 of the precinct works are scheduled to finish in early 2020.

The project includes an upgraded regional skate park, playground, terraced landscaping, events lawn and gymnastics and parkour equipment.

The 865 square-metre skate park with a street course and skate bowls is designed for beginners as well as experienced skaters and scooter riders.

City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said a branding and design consultant had come up with four potential names.

“Each of (them) is unique, has its own story and reflects different aspects of Endeavour Hills and this project,” Cr Stapledon said.

“Once complete, this precinct will be become a hub for the Endeavour Hills community to meet, socialise, skate and play, so it’s fitting that we get their input on what they’d like to see it named once it’s complete.”

The project is equally funded by City of Casey and the State Government.

Votes are open on the Casey Conversations website until Sunday 23 June.

A Dandenong South manufacturer has paid tribute to its longest serving workers.

Hilton Manufacturing held an honour service for 51 past and present staff who had toiled 15-plus years or 25-plus years at the firm.

The company’s history spans 44 years, starting in a humble tin shed in Hallam.

But the collective years of service for those chosen workers is more than 1100 years.

Director Todd Hartley, who hosted the service on 24 May, said the aim was to recognise their contribution and loyalty.

There is an exemption within these rules which allows for enforcement vehicles to stop in places where other vehicles are prohibited, so they can carry out their jobs.”

But the anonymous citizen also questioned the practices of parking officers at other times.

“Last year ... the front of our driveways were being re-concreted - our side of the street is a 24/7 no parking zone and on the other side parking is allowed, so when these works were taking place the parking side of the street was fully blocked off by the contractors with witches hats.

“There was actually no available parking for ourselves, staff or our customers. My son parked his car on the nature strip outside our premises; yes it was illegally parked because he needed to load some stuff into his ute but lo and behold whilst he was inside our factory organizing the stuff, up popped a parking inspector who again illegally parked himself and was about to book my son.

“Common sense did prevail on this day and after a little bit of pleading from my son he didn’t book him.

“In my opinion the inspectors should not have been down the street booking vehicles whilst these works were happening.”

Rays suffer their first loss

By Hayley Wildes It was always going to be a difficult task, and going up against the Northern Knights proved to be a bridge too far for the undermanned Dandenong Stingrays in NAB League action on Saturday.

Missing their Vic Country stars - who were in Tasmania to take on the Allies - Dandenong put up a brave fight at Shepley Oval, but Northern took over in the second half to come away with a resounding win.

The first quarter was when the Knights stamped their authority on the contest and jumped out to a 22-point lead.

But as the side has done so often over the journey, Dandenong fought back. The second quarter showcased the Rays’ depth as they quickly got back into the contest.

The likes of Corey Ellison and Reece Orchard were sublime around the contest, and the pressure around the ball went up a notch in the second term as both teams went in hard.

At the main break, Dandenong trailed by 12 points, 6.8 (44) to 5.2 (32).

With the game in the balance at half-time, the Knights owned the third quarter and managed to put some distance between themselves and the Stingrays.

Keeping Dandenong goalless in the quarter, while slamming on four majors of their own, Northern boasted a 37-point lead at the final break.

The youth of Dandenong’s side was on full display in the fourth quarter as Northern put the contest to bed in dominant fashion. The Knights kicked six goals to one in the final term - and 10 of the 11 goals scored after half-time to record a comprehensive 67-point win, 16.12 (108) to 6.5 (41).

For that game, Dandenong should welcome back most, if not all, of its state representatives as Vic Country has a bye that weekend in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships.

Bulls no match for the rampaging Tigers

By Hayley Wildes In a standalone Eastern Football League fixture on Saturday, Noble Park hosted Balwyn at Pat Wright Senior Oval.

But unfortunately for the Bulls, they were completely outplayed from the opening bounce as the Tigers got the jump early and never looked back.

To say Balwyn got off to a strong start would be an understatement; it was apparent from the first couple of minutes that the Tigers who boasted a 6-2 record prior to this encounter - meant business.

The Tigers piled on seven unanswered goals and kept the Bulls scoreless in the first quarter as their midfield dominance translated up forward.

With their work cut out for them, the Bulls attempted to drag themselves back into the contest in the second quarter but wayward kicking for goal cost them any chance of that.

At half-time, Balwyn led by 54 points, 10.5 (65) to 1.5 (11).

The onslaught continued in the second half as the Tigers - coached by former AFL coach Rodney Eade - put the foot down and never gave the Bulls any hope.

The third quarter was another scoreless one for Noble Park, while Balwyn put through another five majors of its own.

With the game all but over, the Bulls did manage to put some respectability on the scoreboard late and won the final term of play five goals to four.

But it meant little as the Tigers flexed their muscles all day and came away with a resounding, and simply dominant, 83-point win - 19.12 (126) to 6.7 (43).

The usual suspects of Kyle Martin and Jackson Sketcher battled hard all afternoon in a disappointing day for Noble Park, while Nathan Oakes (two goals) was the lone multiple goal-scorer for the Bulls.

The sheer number of the Tigers’ offensive threats was on full display with 12 individual goal-kickers showcasing just how impressive they are when they get going.

Cooper Sharman (three goals) was a class above for Balwyn, while Taylor Gilchrist and Charlie Haley (three goals) were also dominant.

After an encouraging start to the season for Noble Park - which saw the side win its first three games of the year - the Bulls have come crashing back to earth in the last month-anda-half, losing their past six games.

With such a young team, consistency was always going to be a question mark and Noble Park will need to find answers quickly to turn around its season with a 3-6 record after nine rounds. The Bulls’ defence has proven to be its achilles heel as they’ve struggled mightily to keep opposition teams to a low score.

Combative Cahill’s quest

By Hayley Wildes In thinking of the quintessential Dandenong Stingrays player, Ned Cahill immediately comes to mind.

He’s skilful, tough, thrives on contested footy, brings immense pressure, and most importantly, possesses a team-first mindset.

It’s these qualities, plus many more, that have seen Cahill take his game to a new level in the 2019 NAB League season.

After a terrific end to the 2018 season, which saw him play a key role in Dandenong’s maiden TAC Cup premiership as a bottom-age player, Cahill looked set to explode into 2019.

slightly at the start of the year, but he’s fit and firing right now. “[My pre-season focus] was trying to be just as consistent as possible; getting to a level of fitness where I could play a good four quarters was the main goal that I really wanted to bring into this year,” he said.

Playing a good four quarters of football has been no issue for Cahill. His manic pressure which is exquisitely combined with incredible poise - is a joy to watch.

“When you’re not really in the game, what I like to do to get myself back in the game is just bring my pressure and tackling as much as I can,” he said.

“I try to have that kind of impact and then everything just kind of follows on from there.”

After playing much of 2018 as a small forward, Cahill has moved more into the midfield this season and the move is reaping rewards for Dandenong.

“When I played juniors for Mt Eliza I was always a midfielder, but then last year because we had such a strong midfield I couldn’t really break into that, so I think the only way I could play was to play forward,” he said.

“This year being a top-ager, having that versatility and being able to play both roles has really helped.”

Having won it all last season and seeing half a dozen players get drafted, there was a general consensus that Dandenong wouldn’t be the same juggernaut in 2019. That couldn’t be further from the case, and even Cahill admits he’s been pleasantly surprised by Dandenong’s flying start to the season.

“I think most people did expect that dropoff - I’m not going to lie, I did expect it a little bit because that was a really strong team last year and so many boys got drafted or are playing VFL now,” he said.

“In Round 1 I think we had about 13 debutants. From there, all the bottom-agers have re-

ally stepped up and the top-agers and 19 year olds have really taken on that leadership role.

“We’ve become a very strong team, but we’re also really close as well - we’ve all got that respect and friendship.”

Recently, Cahill represented Vic Country on the hallowed MCG turf and put on a show against fierce rivals Vic Metro in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships.

Vic Country headed into the game as underdogs, but they claimed a memorable 13-point win with Cahill playing a vital role. He finished with 16 disposals, two classy goals and plenty of pressure acts.

“That was surreal; I was so excited, I’m not going to lie,” he said of playing on the MCG.

“To experience it for myself, but also with close friends that you make through the Vic Country program and the friends that I have at the Stingrays - Bigoa Nyuon, Cody Weightman, Sam De Koning and Hayden Young - that was awesome.

“We were the underdogs, but what we have is that real strong bond and we have that Vic Country fight.

“We played to our strengths; contested hard football and selflessness. To get that win over the Metro boys, we were stoked.”
