Valuable tips for clubs ON 11 APRIL 2019, the Combined Probus Club of Knox hosted a “Probus Information Day” at the Stanford Hotel, Rowville, and on the next day the Manningham Probus Interest Group hosted its 10th “Probus Information Day” at the East Doncaster Baptist Church, Donvale.

Approximately 170 Probians from about 57 Probus Clubs attended.

Margaret Robinson, Past Probus South Pacific Board Member, conducted each day in a very professional and instructive way.

All attendees were provided with new ideas that will undoubtedly improve their existing personal skills and thus lead to benefitting their particular club in the future.

The days also allowed informal partnerships to be created between the different participants that hopefully will further enhance relationships and socialisation, and lead to further sharing of activities between clubs.

The days also gave participants the opportunity to make and develop new friendships for the future.

Each day started with Margaret Robinson presenting instruction and guidance on various important Probus management and procedural matters.

This was followed by attendees moving into particular break-out groups of their own interest where they could share ideas with each other relative to their own particular office, position, or interest within their club.

After this, an open forum was held where many ideas that were discussed and developed in the particular break-out groups were shared with all present.

Advice has been received from several clubs that they have already implemented procedures learnt on the day, and from other clubs that they propose taking some of what was learnt back to their own club committees.

Attendees have strongly indicated that these functions should be conducted on a

regular basis.

It has also been suggested that as many Probians as possible attend future Information days, particularly office bearers or club members interested in taking on an office in the future, to learn further information about Probus.

Presidential century of service TEN past presidents of the Southern Peninsula Probus Club attended the club’s 36th Annual Change Over lunch held on 28 March 2019.

Herbert, especially thanked the 10 past presidents for their ongoing support of the club and for their 100 years of membership in the club that they collectively represent.

The new President said;

“I am certain the generous contribution each of these former presidents has made in various roles has ensured the ongoing success of the Southern Peninsula Probus Club,” the new president said.

The function was held at the Portsea Golf Club where the 85 guests enjoyed a sumptuous buffet lunch enhanced by a spectacular and panoramic view of the Nepean Peninsula and Port Phillip Bay.

Help improve the quality of life for older adults A nationally-recognised research team in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at the University of Newcastle is working with health and aged care providers and community groups to better understand the needs of ageing Australians, including those with dementia, and their carers.

And it has reached out to Victorian Probians to become involved in this important project.

The research team wants to hear about the most important issues and challenges facing older adults and the people who support them.

Participation involves completing

between one and three surveys.

These studies seek to identify opportunities to improve care and service delivery for older adults and their caregivers.

The surveys will be completed by a large number of older adults and their carers from across Australia. Data collected will be provided back to governments and service delivery organisations to inform care improvements.

Blackburn South birthday THE Combined Probus Club of Blackburn South recently celebrated its 30th birthday.

Commencing in 1997 as a Men’s club with 54 members, the club continued activities until 2013, when with a falling membership, it was decided to hold a ballot with the intention of changing to a combined club.

Many widows of deceased members were glad to join and renew friendships and membership has now reached 98 active members.

The club celebrated with a birthday cake being cut during the meeting, when foundation members were presented with 30 year certificates, and then invited to cut the cake.

First of all I am so sorry that I was not home to chair the Delegates Meeting on 27 May as I made a mistake of the date and, therefore, was be away.

The affiliation fees, which are now overdue, are still coming in. If your club has not got around to paying the fees please do so now.

It is pleasing to see how many have registered for the Friendship Days at both Mornington and Pakenham races, even if it seems winter is here but thankfully we often get sunny days no matter which season it is. Sun or no sun, I am sure we will have lots of fun.

Gentlemen can you please consider stepping up and being part of our committee because Rodney James is doing his fourth year as secretary and will stand down at the AGM. We ladies will really appreciate having some more male input into the running of the Probus Association of Victoria.

Ballarat East toasts milestone FIFTY-SIX ladies from the Ballarat East Ladies Probus Club celebrated the 25th birthday of the club at the annual general meeting in March.

President Norma Jenkins extended a special welcome to Margaret Robinson, the Rotary District Probus Chair, who in an earlier life was a foundation member of the club.

Margaret gave a little background on her life in Probus and Norma then presented the 25-year foundation member certificates and a foundation brooch to charter members.

was presented to the club to mark the occasion.

Faye Broome, the inaugural president, and members Bev Newey and Zelma Toplis told of the early years and their time with the club. The club remarkably still has 14 original members who attend regularly.

Faye and Norma cut the birthday cake, a beautiful cake made by member Lorraine Fagg.

At the conclusion of a most enjoyable meeting members stayed to share a delicious luncheon consisting of a savories, sandwiches, birthday cake, tea, coffee and slices.

Mooroolbark event has a silver lining Bev Dell, the club’s first lady president, cuts the anniversary cake.

THE Combined Club of Mooroolbark celebrated its 25th anniversary with a lunch at the Dorset Gardens Hotel in Croydon.

Foundation and life member Marj Hookey gave a presentation on the history of the club in its infancy, including reading some excerpts of some very amusing minutes written by an early secretary who regarded

himself as a wordsmith.

Marj highlighted the fact that the inaugural meeting had been initially planned to start up a men’s club, but before the meeting closed and after a number of attendees had requested that ladies be invited to join, the formation of a mixed club was voted in almost unanimously.

Les Matthews was honoured for his 25year continuous committee service holding down a vast number of positions, including president , secretary and treasurer.

Bev Dell ,the first lady president (1996), was given the honour of cutting the birthday cake, which was made by the club’s regular cake maker Marj Hookey.

Rare honour for Val

The new Trafalgar Probus Club committee, back from left, Bob Jones, Leonie Pethybridge with husband Ross. Olwyn’s 25 years OLWYN Vitale was awarded a 25-year service pin by president Anne Brennan at the March general meeting of the Trafalgar Probus Club.

Olive joined the club’s current five foundation members in the over 25 years of support to the club.

She is also a life member who spent many years in various roles on the committee and still joins in with most of the bus trips, dine outs and functions and is a wonderful Probian.

The club completed its 26th AGM in March and again was successful in filling

all positions on the committee.

New president Bob Jones took over the reins from Anne Brennan, who remains on the committee as past president.

The club had another busy year with activities including bus trips, dine outs, Christmas in July, monthly walks, Christmas dinner and the Annual Cluster Group Lunch, which this year was at Gumbuya World.

Who said retirement was boring?

The club has 17 committee members and has been most fortunate to have such great support from membership to keep the club strong.

Olwyn Vitale is presented with the 25 year pin by then president Anne Brennan.

AT the annual general meeting of the Probus Club of Warragul Ranges in March, vice-president Bob Davidson presented Val Hardy with the club’s second life membership.

Val is a founding member of the club and in her 13 years has served on the committee in the roles of president, vice-president, past president, treasurer, welfare and hospitality.

These roles covered a period of 12 consecutive years and Val took a break in the 2018-19 year, but true to form, has joined the committee again in this new Probus year.

She has been a stalwart of the club and is famously known for her fruit cakes, producing them for every function or outing.

Well done Val!

Lotus Garden a real colour kaleidoscope A few members of the Syndal Ladies Probus Club travelled to the Lotus Gardens to see the 14 tropical themed acres of lakes, ponds and lagoons filled with hundreds of varieties of flowering lotus, waterlily and bog plants.

The vast kaleidoscope of colour in every direction was truly impressive.

They wandered along a maze of pathways over ornamental bridges, under trees and palms and through various themed gardens.

At the Flower Fairy Garden Heather was most delighted to star as the Fairy Queen.

After spending a some hours amongst Giants of the Amazon, Monet’s Lake, many magnificent flowering Impatiens and the huge Garden Shop a well-earned lunch stop was enjoyed in the delightful surrounds of the Lily Pond Cafe.

SUSAN Fowler has become Chelsea Probus Club’s first female president in 35 years.

Discovering Queenscliff TWENTY seven members from the Probus Club of Ballarat South travelled to the Big 4 Bellarine Holiday Park near Queenscliff, in March.

The club has two Caravan and Cabins trips a year, and this was the autumn adventure!

Queenscliff has a rich and varied history and we enjoyed hearing all about it on the heritage town walk that some of us went on. We also visited the Fisheries Discovery Centre, and found the information and displays so comprehensive and so interesting.

Other activites included a walk from Ocean Grove to Barwon Heads, a ferry ride across the Bay to Sorrento, visits to Banks Road and Jack Rabbit wineries, fishing and general sightseeing.

At the Holiday Park we were well looked after by the Bone family. We had a delicious roast meal one night, played cards, stretched our brains on a trivia night, enjoyed happy hours and barbecue meals, and even swam in the lovely heated indoor pool.

We would certainly recommend a trip to the Bellarine to other Probus groups.

Seaside visit MEMBERS of the Combined Probus Club of Montrose enjoyed a trip to The Cottage by the Sea, a holiday home for disadvantaged children in Queenscliff.

They were given a talk on the way things are run and the volunteers who assist.

Some children, who enjoyed a holiday there as a youngster, return as mentors to the younger ones and to assist on the many varied activities the children enjoy.

This holiday is something for the children to remember when life gets hard for them.

Members were then provided with a delightful Devonshire tea and later dined at the local bowling club before setting off for home full and happy after a lovely day.

The Montrose club is looking for new members. The group meets every third Wednesday of the month at 9.30am for 9.45am start.

It has various activities throughout the month including happy hour, singing, outings, walking, theatre and square dancing. For venue location and further details, please phone Margaret on 9725 9843.

Silo Art Route just stunning

The magnificent clydesdales at Gooroombat.

ON Wednesday 24 April many Mansfield Men’s Probus Club members and their partners attended a wonderful day out to travel the Silo Art Route out of Benalla.

They began with Gooroombat where they saw the fabulous art of Clydesdales and Barking Owls.

In the Uniting church they found an unusual and stunning mural behind the alter.

The group moved onto Devenish where additional artwork had been commissioned

ready for this year’s Anzac Day. Further at St James were depictions of the Industrial era of the town.

The final stop was at Tungamah where members were fortunate enough to have John Cooper, who is a descendant of a local farming family, who gave a very historical account of the town and who is responsible for the commissioning of the free-hand work depicting plains Brolgas and a Kookaburra. The group ended the tour with lunch at the Tungamah Hotel.

Pyjama Rama Party on Maroondah trip MEMBERS of The Combined Probus Club of Maroondah had a wonderful time on their 23rd Cabins and Caravans Gathering - the weather was perfect and there was so much to explore on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Members enjoyed going for walks, playing bowls and bocce, golf and cycling.

Or visiting Geelong and the Sidney Nolan exhibition at the Art Gallery, Queenscliff, Barwon Heads, Torquay and many other towns. And of course visiting the wineries and restaurants in the area!

In the evenings, the communal gatherings were great fun, especially the evening on which the theme was Night Attire - Pyjama Rama Party. Members excelled in this - and they all had a great time.

THE Probus Club of Dingley Central recently had a day trip to the Diamond Valley Railway in Eltham.

Volunteer enthusiasts run and maintain the miniature train, tracks and signals that are kept in immaculate condition.

Probians boarded the train from the platform and enjoyed the scenic two and a half kilometre ride beneath the gum trees, over bridges and through tunnels.

Getting to sit astride the seat was an interesting challenge but getting out could have been worse without the help of the experienced volunteers who eagerly demonstrated a good method of alighting.

Marvelling at olden Holdens TRAFALGAR welcomed members of the Probus Club of Pakenham with warm sunshine, of course this had been ordered, being a Probus Day out.

Seventeen members attended and after morning tea at Yarragon, they ventured on to Trafalgar to the Holden Museum.

The museum is quite surprising really, most had no idea just how many things Holden made other than cars. A lovely, well cared for set up, a big welcome, a nice man to show the group around and answer any questions!

The most glamorous car in the building is not a real car, but a fibreglass model prepared for manufacture. However it was decided not to manufacture this and so

the model is the only one of its kind and on loan from General Motors Holden. With a lustrous, hot lipstick pink exterior and totally white interior, this was a favourite with the ladies.

The meal was delicious at the Criterion

Hotel just across the railway line and then the group couldn’t help themselves, we stopping in Yarragon for ice creams or coffee on the way home.

It was a tour that the club would recommend to other clubs looking for something a little different and certainly a bit special.

Shrine visit sad, yet uplifting A number of Probus Club of Wantirna Heights members toured the Shrine of Remembrance on a beautiful, clear Melbourne day recently.

The Shrine’s exterior is impressive and the interior is no less so.

The views of Melbourne from the ramparts are outstanding and those on the tour found it was well worth the effort of climbing the steps.

The group was led by a most informative guide, who not only knew a lot about the Shrine but also included a history of early Melbourne.

Significant additions and renovations have been made to the interior in the last 10 years.

The previously empty ground floor has been transformed into Galleries of Remembrance, each relating to a particular conflict, with Afghanistan soon to be added.

Those on the tour felt that further visits were needed to appreciate the excellent displays as well as take in and enjoy the themed gardens in the grounds.

They found the Shrine a sombre place and yet not melancholy; full of sadness but yet uplifting; a reminder of tragedy, yet also of purpose and the need to fight for our country’s values and traditions.

Lunch after the visit gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on the experience.

Touring Bright and surrounds

The group at Mt Buffalo. proved very popular with lots of bargains to be had and treasures to be found.

A visit to Wandiligong was very worthwhile as we feasted on Kanzi apples, which were delicious. They also visited Myrtleford and the Red Stag farm. Many were amazed by the size of the deer antlers and the bulls roar.

A wonderful week finished with dinner

on her balcony and soaked up the tranquil atmosphere of their surrounds.

The various shades of green as the season begins to change in Bright offered much beauty to this little piece of paradise nestled at the foot of the hills.

Friday was a free day so the cash was flowing as the ladies hit the shops and the men winced at the thought. The op shops

together at The Chinese Restaurant in Bright.

Alas, all good things come to an end so Saturday the group packed up and headed home - with the group’s motto in tow... what happens on camp stays on camp.

Thanks to all those who made the trip over the mountain for the week, and the friendships that were made.

THE Traralgon Combined Probus Club’s Caravan and Cabins Group arrived safely at Bright after an adventurous trip through Omeo and then over Mt Hotham.

Even though the temperature dropped to three degrees and foggy, members enjoyed the journey.

The cold weather didn’t deter the fun and laughter at happy hour, sharing poetry and jokes. A walk to The Star Hotel and a delicious meal ended the evening, many retiring early, a few playing cards.

The walking group continued their tradition the next morning with a five kilometre walk around beautiful Bright followed by coffee and cake at the Beechworth Bakery. They then carpooled to Beechworth and Yackandandah for sightseeing and shopping. Happy hour was kindly provided by the caravan park management , followed by a barbecue tea.

A game of trivia kept everyone moaning and groaning, with much laughter and banter.

On the Wednesday, 16 travelled to Mt Buffalo while the remaining eight went in the opposite direction to explore Mt Beauty.

From Mt Buffalo that group drove up to the Horn and climbed to the summit to check out the 360 degree views of Bright and beyond - spectacular to say the least. A great day was had by all.

On Thursday the group was invited to play croquet at Bright. Golf was the game of choice for David Canning, Geoff Pollard and Peter Admiraal.

A wonderful stay at the Bright Chalet ON Tuesday 23 April, 33 members and friends of the Noble Park Combined Probus Club arrived at the Noble Park Football Club full of excited anticipation towards boarding the coach for Bright.

So after a checklist and declaration of all present, they set off in a coach sent down by Michael O’Sullivan of Bright Chalet. With Ken at the wheel, they left suburbia behind and made their way through beautiful countryside with trees ablaze with colours of autumn.

It was so beautiful you could feel yourself unwind and looking forward to a four day break at the Chalet hosted by the O’Sullivan family.

It didn’t take long for the group to gather in the loungeroom and order from the bar to help unwind from the long journey. After a fantastic dinner, they were entertained by wildlife artist Meagan Glenhardt, who with five exhibits demonstrated a highly specialized technique of dancing a flame underneath paper to leave a layer of soot, then etching it away.

After a good night’s sleep and a wholesome breakfast, the group headed off, with Gilbert at the wheel, to the Red Stag Deer Farm, learning along the way that excavators clear the trees upwards to be collected and taken away, also upwards, so as to prevent the timber gaining momentum as it rolls downwards, causing terrible

From the comfort of an electric bus, driven over well-defined paths, the Probus Club of Dingley Central discovered a wide range of native plants from every state of Australia.

The driver, a horticulturist, gave a running commentary whilst guiding the bus through these remarkable gardens.

She gave Probians an understanding of environmental issues and pointed out drought tolerant plants, fragrant plants and unusual flowers and leaves.

Over three days the group visited the olive farm, pumpkins seeds, Nightingale Brothers Alpine Produce, Red Stag Deer Farm and Beechworth, where a few had lunch in and old world tea room. It had décor from the 1920s and ‘30s - fine bone china, table cloths, cutlery, serviettes and a small posy of flowers as a centerpiece such elegance! Oh, for the good old days, eh? They enjoyed time soaking up the atmosphere of years gone by.

A visit to Bilsons Brewery - established 1865 - was indeed enlightening. It was later taken over by the Murray brothers.

The playing of The Last Post by Jeremy O’Sullivan sent shivers up the spine, as it was a superb rendition.

To be the guests of the O’Sullivan family was an absolute delight, the meals out of this world and the comfort of having the run of the Chalet and the acceptance of Tiberius the family cat was all anyone would want for a wonderful break.

Sincere thanks were given to the O’Sullivan family and not even an accident on the way home could dampen spirits.

Knoxfield's 30 great years THE Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a delicious lunch at Tosaria’s Restaurant in Rowville.

Celebrating with members was Rowville MP Kim Wells and Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling.

Robert Renshaw, the Rotary representative, presented club president Jan Waters with a certificate from Probus South Pacific to commemorate the anniversary.

Club members were also joined by past and present members and representatives of the Boronia Ladies Probus, Bayswater Ladies Probus and Kingston Heath Ladies Probus Club.

Barbara Watson, a member for 26 years, spoke about the beginnings and history of the club and Fay Ryan another early member, recounted her memories of the earliest meetings which began in the Knox Council offices; then at Carrington Park.

Ten further years of meetings were held at the Stamford Hotel, then another 10 years at the Waverley Golf Club.

The club now meets at the Wantirna Club - perhaps for another 10 years.

Members hope so.

Barbara Watson and Fay Bawden, both life members cut the celebration cake, slices of which disappeared at an alarming rate.

Each diner received a complimentary pen printed with the club name. The donated cyclamen plants decorating the tables were used as prizes for a lucky number draw, as were the balloon table centrepieces.

Although the one remaining founding member was unable to join in due to ill health, it was rewarding to have at the lunch, seven past presidents and five members who have been with the club for 20 years or more.

Although reaching the grand age of 30, the club remains active with outings, especially bus trips due to hard working social secretary Elizabeth Tainton. All committee members work towards keeping the club friendly and relevant, with emphasis on social interaction and fun during our meetings and outings.

The 30th Annual General Meeting followed this celebration with the very tuneful Frankston Ladies Choir entertaining again.

Future outings include the TAFE Restaurant Zest in Glen Waverley, always a delicious meal, and a visit to Ambulance Victoria Historical Society Museum in Bayswater with lunch at Crave Restaurant Boronia.

Merle Lea became the first life member of White Hills Probus in 2006, followed

THE inaugural meeting to form the Probus Club of White Hills was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bendigo on Tuesday, 22 March 1994.

The meeting was attended by about 100 people including representatives from six other Bendigo Probus Clubs and prospective members to support the formation of the new club.

The Probus Club Standard Constitution was adopted and the following office bearers elected: Merle Lea (Charter President), Herb Stephens Secretary and John Metcalfe Treasurer.

Since its inception the Probus Club of White Hills has become a thriving, vibrant organisation which provides the members with regular opportunities to keep their minds active, to expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

Fast forward to Tuesday, 24 March 2019 and the Probus Club of White Hills is now 25 years young and still going strong.

Hugh Wheeler from Bendigo Rotary was in attendance for the Annual General Meeting and took the chair for the election of office bearers, with the following members being elected and re-elected: Colin Watts (President) Glenys Billings (Vice President), Evelyn Robertson (Secretary), Bryan Randall (Treasurer), Ian Robertson (Assistant Treasurer) and committee members Bob Boyd, John Ham, Ron Mason, Anne Scown and Maree Walker.

Hills alive with jazz A capacity crowd packed the Huntly Hall for the recent afternoon of jazz featuring the Maryborough Traditional Jazz Ensemble.

The Probus Club of White Hills was the host for the second year in succession and patrons enjoyed the wonderful variety of jazz music ranging from the old classics to more modern arrangements.

Band members travelled from all parts of Victoria to entertain the big crowd and many patrons expressed their interest in this becoming an annual event.

Maryborough Traditional Jazz Ensemble is comprised of several very talented musicians including Bryan Hodges (drums), Paul Emery (bass), Barry Currie (reeds and vocals), Bob Franklin (keyboard and vocals),

We had such a good time lots of things to see and do and only 10 days to do it in.

We started our tour at Hanoi and Harlong Bay, which was amazing.

We then flew to Hoi An (Danang) where we visited the Golden Bridge (Sun World) which was very interesting and so different it was like Vietnam’s version of Disneyland.

Next stop was Ho Chi Min City, which we all loved. We did a boat trip on the Mekong Delta and visited a coconut farm, where they made a lot of souvenirs out of the coconut shell and also they made coconut caramels, which were delicious.

We all enjoyed to Vietnamese food and the beer of course and we drank lots of bottled water.

Taking in tales of the tram ON 16 May 2019, members of the Probus Club of Donvale Hill visited the Melbourne Tramway Museum that is located in the former three storey high brick building that was constructed in 1915-16 at Hawthorn.

It was originally used as a Tram Depot for trams that ran on the Wattle Park and Burwood lines and later also on the Chapel Street to City and Richmond to Power Street lines.

The very knowledgeable tour guide began the tour by showing all a cable tram and trailer that was operated by using two levers. These did not have any doors or windows and consequently would have been very cold to travel on in the cooler months.

One of the club’s members can recall

travelling on these trams and said how bumpy they were as they went around corners.

The next tram the group boarded was a Z class tram that had been completely decorated both inside and outside by people from India. It certainly was very ornate.

The group then inspected many other trams that were built between 1936 and 1994 and also the training room that was used for training tram drivers and conductors for many years.

Trams are now treated as an excellent way of moving masses of people and are continuing to be built at Bombardier Industries in Dandenong South.

This was an excellent tour.

Flying through history RECENTLY the Probus Club of Blackburn South went to view the RAAF Museum at Point Cook.

The Point Cook base is no longer used to train RAAF pilots and has been placed on the National Heritage List.

There are 28 aircraft on display in several hangars with some large aircraft displayed externally. They vary from preWorld War I up to the recently retired F111.

Together with a variety of propulsion engines, a large collection of armament and some fire appliances, the museum is well worth a visit.

Flying displays using some of their collection of aircraft are held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

It's a new committee for Syndal Combined

Dragons, spanners and silos around his farming property. John has an amazing story to tell and has achieved so much since contracting polio at the age of eight. He ran the family farm property before retiring and using spanners to construct life size sculpture creations.

The Swan Hill historic village, paddle boat ride on the Murray River, and ‘Heartbeat of the Murray’ Sound and Light Show were all top class attractions enjoyed and experienced during our time in Swan Hill.

A stop at the shallow and salt encrusted Lake Tyrrell in the Mallee district of northwest Victoria was followed by visits to five of the painted Silos on the popular Silo Art trail, en route to an overnight stop at Stawell. It was sad to witness the affects

that prolonged drought has been having on much of the farmland and the country towns we passed through.

An interesting morning was spent at the Stawell Gift Museum rounded off this very interesting and enjoyable tour, prior to catching the VLine train back to Melbourne from Ararat.

IN early March, a group of 20 Syndal Combined Probus members enjoyed an excellent five day tour with Southwest Explorers (Bob Scarborough) to Bendigo, Swan Hill and the Silo Art Trail.

Highlights included the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo, which has been expanded in recent years and is known as the Chinese Cultural Centre of Australia.

The museum site, which includes a traditional Chinese Garden, contains many stories of Chinese history, the story of the goldfields and is the final resting place of many important and priceless artefacts.

South Coast shenanigans TWENTY-ONE members of the Paynesville Probus Club Caravan and Cabin Touring Group recently participated in a seven night tour to Eden and Bermagui on the New South Wales south coast.

An interesting program was organised by the tour leaders, Ken and Loraine Lloyd, and included daily Tai Chi exercises, lunch time outings, a whale/dolphin watching cruise (saw none) and a tour of the Montreal Goldfields in Bermagui.

These goldfields were established in the 1880s and were one of only two such diggings in the world, searching for flake gold in water courses from mountains to sea.

A lunch at the Raw Prawn Bistro, Narooma, proved how crazy club members can be as they “fed the animals“ after their lunch.

The report says that “what happens on the tour stays on the tour“.

Bowls title goes to Kerang

THE numbers were down for this year’s Rochester Probus Bowls Day, as there were so many bowls events in the month.

The club was still able to hold a very well organised and successful day, on well prepared greens in beautiful sunny weather.

Members certainly come to the fore when helpers are called for, with plenty of good country cooking, friendship and fun.

The team from Kerang Probus won and

was presented with medallions and the perpetual trophy.

Many more prizes were given out and a terrific raffle held, which was donated by the local Murray Goulburn store.

The club president, secretary and a committee member attended a Membership Development Day in Shepparton recently, and found it very interesting and informative.

Splitting school folk and the festival SCHOOL was back and the Port Fairy Folk Festival was still a few weeks away, so early February seemed an ideal time for 31 members of the Combined Probus Club of St Helena to enjoy a weeks break at Port Fairy, a coastal town in South West Victoria.

While the timing was great to miss the crowds you can never predicate what Mother Nature might bring weatherwise on the Victorian south-west coast.

The inclement weather on a number of the days didn’t stop people getting out and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Some of the group spent a day in Portland travelling on the local tourist tram having a good look at the city. Other members travelled to Cape Bridgewater and viewed the Tarragal Caves.

The weather was a challenge for the golfers in the group but when there is a new course to be explored the enthusiastic golfer is always ready to accept that challenge. In spite of the weather a hardy group of seven men and three women enjoyed a pleasant stroll around the 18 fairways, greens and bunkers of the Port Fairy Golf Club.

Members joined a tourist walk to hear about and see the historic buildings and surrounding areas of Port Fairy.

The Port Fairy Harbour is home to a fleet of fishing boats, an increasing number of tourist boats and a number of fine restaurants.

The group enjoyed staying at the local caravan park, sharing many happy hours, barbecues and breakfasts. It was certainly focused on “fellowship, friendship and fun“.

Lost Diggers of Fromelles LAMBIS Englezos was the speaker at the Probus Club of North Balwyn Heights’ April meeting.

It was an inspiring and moving story told with passion.

Lambis was responsible for pursuing the discovery of mass graves of World War I of Australian Diggers killed at the Battle of Fromelles were still lying in mass burial pits after burial by the Germans in 1916.

He has been recognised for his work; awarded the OA 2008 for his Fromelles work, the inaugural Shrine Medallion in 2010 and the RSL Anzac award in the same year. He has been acknowledged in many books including Les Carlyon’s The Great War. More information is available on the website: Discovery of mass graves Fromelles.

How to start a wine movement AFTER a couple of rather hilarious â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;blindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wine tastings at Caravan and Cabins Trips recently, an enthusiastic group decided it was worth while seeing if there was enough interest to start a Wine Appreciation Group.

How to get that going? Put on a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;properâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wine tasting!

Much preparation went into the set-up, with three reds and three whites chosen, notes to go with them, along with the correct cheeses and nibbles to accompany them.

In April, 22 members of the Ringwood Clocktower Club gathered eagerly at Trevor and Bevâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home for the first meeting of the new Wine Appreciation Group.

John Wicks produced a talk about a Shiraz that he is very fond of, and everyone enjoyed some wines they hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tasted before.

Soaring high IN March the East Malvern Combined Probus Club members took off in the Eagle at Arthurs Seat on the Mornington Peninsula.

The weather was excellent and the view was spectacular looking over the Bay and back to Melbourne.

The gondoliers are very comfortable and

semi-enclosed, the ride is very smooth.

Members started at the top (plenty of parking) and did the round trip.

After the ride they had a light lunch in the cafĂŠ, which was excellent. Everybody had a great day out and would recommend it to everybody.

Blue Mountains trip IN March, 36 members and friends of Strathfieldsaye Probus Club departed on a seven day bus tour of the Blue Mountains.

After travelling via Wagga, the next day the group combined a stop at Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory, where members made their own freckle, then on to Cowra to visit the Japanese Gardens and Cultural Centre.

The tour was based in Lithgow for the next four nights, and the next attraction was the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens, then on to North Richmond where members visited Aitkens Australia in the round, an outstanding panorama featuring views of Australian locations.

The next morning a trip was made to Scenic World at Katoomba, where members rode on Skyways, Scenic Railway, and Cable

Car, all very exciting. Next stop was Echo Point to see Three Sisters, the famous cliff attraction, then on to Blue Mountains Chocolate Factory.

Wednesday a tour to Everglades Historic House and gardens, where the group was treated to home-made devonshire tea, the afternoon was free for members to pursue their own interests. Thursday it was on to West Wylong for an overnight stop and the next morning the group departed and enjoyed morning tea at Narrandera, thanks to some members who baked these goodies.

Then it was a wander through the visitors centre featuring the Big Guitar and Tiger Mouth.

After a lunch stop at Deniliquin, the happy, but tired Probians continued home to Bendigo.

Taking in La Gerche ON 3 April, 20 members of the North Ballarat Probus Club visited the La Gerche Gully at Creswick.

On arrival a park ranger gave the group a talk about the area and the ranger’s responsibilities.

Some of our group then walked the two kilometre trail through beautiful countryside and stopped for a photo at the sculpture of John La Gerche (1845-1914).

The trail commemorates the life and work of John La Gerche who was a forest bailiff at Creswick from 1882 until 1897.

La Gerche’s two outstanding achievements were to halt the rampant cutting of trees for mining and fuel-wood so as to allow regeneration of the forest, and the establishment of the Creswick Nursery.

Kerang tours China FIFTEEN Kerang Probus Club members embarked on a 14-day Wendy Wu tour to China late last year.

Staring in Shanghai they saw the Yu Gardens, visited the Silk Factory, had an evening on the Huangpu River then went on a five day cruise up the Yangtze River

taking in the 3 Gorges, the Ciqikou Ancient City and many temples.

Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China and the Summer Palace.

They then went on to Xian to see the Panda Conservation Centre, the Terracotta Warriors and the Ancient City Walls.

Some members then flew on to Hong Kong while others flew straight home from Beijing.

Next stop was Beijing to visit Tiananmen

A most enjoyable time was had by all.

ON Tuesday 16 April, 25 members and friends of the Donvale Hill Probus Club met in the bright multi-coloured green building which overlooks the EastLink tollway on Maroondah Highway, Ringwood.

The host for the tour was Doug SpencerRoy, marketing manager of EastLink.

The EastLink tollway was a $2.5 billion project built by Theiss and John Holland and operated by the ConnectEast Group, a privately-owned company. It was opened to traffic on 29 June 2008 with a toll-free period before tolls started on 27 July 2008. EastLink was privatised in 2011 and concession ends in 2043.

The fully electronic tollway is 40km long, bypasses 45 traffic lights and connects the Eastern, Monash, Frankston and Peninsula Link freeway. There are approximately 250,000 vehicle trips per day of which 20,000 are heavy commercial vehicles, 30,000 light commercial vehicles with an average speed of about 95kmh and is the second busiest tollway in Australia.

There are approximately 900,000 tags issued to customers and these may be used on any tollway in Australia.

EastLink is the safest freeway in Melbourne with a casualty accident rate of just 1.59 per 100 million vehicle kilometres.

The 1.6km long north/southbound tunnels protect the environmentally sensitive Mullum Mullum Valley.

A now completed upgrade of EastLinkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 10 exhaust fans, to incorporate variable speed drives and a new automatic control system, has reduced power usage by 70 per cent, audible noise levels and improved air quality.

Four millions native trees, shrubs and plants have been planted with another 20,000 planted last year. The 60 wetland areas treat rainwater that falls on EastLink

before being released into creeks and stormwater drains.

There is a 35km EastLink Trail for cyclists, pedestrians and runners, with 12 public artworks, distinctive architectural features including noise panels and pedestrian bridges.

The group was shown the 24/7 Incident Control Room which is operated by two people working a 12-hour shift for six days, then four days off. The customer service call centre employs local people with local knowledge.

Gantries on the tollway have cameras which photograph the front and rear of each vehicle, detect the vehicle speed, determine its height, width and length and identify the number plate. Tag detectors identify any tag on the vehicle and record time and date. This data is then sent to the main system to identify the trip for that vehicle. A toll cap may then be applied.

The numberplate recognition system identifies about 94 per cent of vehicles that do not have tags. Motorbikes are charged half, light commercial vehicles 1.6 times and heavy commercial vehicles 2.6 times the car charge. Infringement penalty just over $150 per day is handled by Fines Victoria.

EastLinkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high performance Key Performance Indicators (as agreed with the State Government) has never incurred a penalty. There is a $3 million (escalating to $20 million) penalty per year for the number of points lost.

Many users of the tollway have passed the distinctive â&#x20AC;&#x153;greenâ&#x20AC;? building near the entrance to the tunnels. The tour enabled all to better understand the EastLink system and the vital role of the staff who operate the tollway.

Birthday bonus for Norm Probians from many clubs gathered at Mornington racecourse on Monday 20 May in the name of friendship and fellowship.

The Friendship Day gathering proved a bonus for Sorrento Mixed Probus Club member Norm Bradshaw, who had a few more friends along to celebrate his 90th birthday.

A cake was produced and members sang Happy Birthday to an appreciative Norm.

Probus Association of Victoria committee members were thrilled with the turnout and are looking forward to the next Friendship Day at the Pakenham races on Monday 17 June.

The mastery of Ed’s Shed NINETY-THREE year old Freemason Eddie has his own little, much-loved corner at Royal Freemasons Coppin Centre, now known as ‘Ed’s Shed’.

His hobby of crafting handmade wooden items like sporting plaques, home decor, and signs is not only great fun for him, residents often drop by to have a chat and see what he is making.

Ed has converted the space to become a welcoming meeting room with his creations exhibited throughout the place.

“Mr Fix-it”, as he is fondly known by friends and Royal Freemasons residents, is a handyman who can repair just about anything. He accepts orders and charges a small amount just to offset the production cost.

Ed’s family is very happy to visit him, to see him enjoying his passion. His niece,

“It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue”.

High on a hill in Kilmore, Victoria you will find the Myriad Glass Studio operated by award winning glass artist, Marina Villani.

Just one hour north of the Melbourne CBD in a peaceful country setting it makes a perfect daytrip.

Over the past two years Marina has won four major prizes at the Festival of Glass Drysdale, a unique event in Australia, celebrating the various branches of glass art.

Each year the festival ‘imports’ master glass artists from Venice to adjudicate its awards so for Marina these have been highlight events.

Marina’s glass obsession began in 1997 when inspired by the mosaics in Saint Marc’s Venice she returned to Melbourne to take up mosaic classes.

As it happened the class next-door was doing ‘slumping’ which led to many a wise crack about ‘bringing your own armchair’ but when at last convinced to try this workshop Marina’s world was up-ended.

In the absence of formal classes she became self taught and within a year had accumulated three kilns and a very crowded garage that no longer housed the family car.

It was at this stage that she and

Marina quit her day job, the studio was built and now history is being made!

The studio has for many years hosted bus groups from all over the state. Your group may even be one of the many that have learned the secrets of glass kilnforming and feasted on a scrumptious morning tea!

A visit typically begins with a talk and demonstration that culminates in the opening of the kiln and although Marina has done this for twenty-two years there is still no greater thrill for her than that the vision of glass red hot and molten.

From chatting to visitors to the studio Marina became aware that some groups had members who had been unable to attend for a whole range of reasons and so the ‘Travelling Glass Show” came into being.

“It’s a bit like packing up the circus”, explains Marina. “The display comes off the shelves, the tools and demo gear get packed and we’re on the road to yet another venue where I get to talk about what I love best. Isn’t life great?”

The display encompasses a vast array of genuinely handmade jewellery, ornaments, platters and artworks at reasonable prices.

Each piece is unique and proudly carries

“This is not ‘party plan’. I am the designer, manufacturer, sales and marketing team and general bottle washer.

Hubby helps but he is more the haulage expert!”

Marina says that the aim is to make visits to the studio or to you, as memorable as possible and it seems that the formula is working because some groups take up the offer year after year.

Keep your pills away from pets!

Vets&Pets Andrew Kapsis AT Lort Smith we regularly see animals suffering from the effects of ingesting drugs intended for human use.

Sometimes it’s because owners have mistakenly thought that if the medication has helped them it will help their pet, but the animals end up with serious health issues.

Dogs and cats can’t metabolise certain chemicals the way humans can, so you should never self-medicate any animal.

Anti-inflammatories and painkillers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol are particularly toxic - even small doses they can lead to organ failure.

Even vitamin supplements and herbal remedies that might seem fairly benign can be harmful to our animal friends.

We need to apply the same level of care storing our medications and supplements that we would if there were small children in the home.

Lort Smith treats a lot of animals who have inadvertently had access to medications. This tends to occur more frequently in dogs.

On one occasion our team treated a French Bulldog puppy that had ingested 20

ibuprofen tablets while the owner was away from the home. He spent four days in our intensive care unit.

While he is lucky to be alive after swallowing this many tablets, the poor puppy sustained irreversible kidney damage that now requires lifelong management.

Some tablets are sugar coated, which make them especially attractive to both dogs and cats.

At Lort Smith we have had clients tell us their pets have pounced on an accidently dropped tablet, thinking it was a treat, and gobbled it before they’ve had a chance to stop them.

Another common story is an owner coming home to find that while they’ve

touch of drama about it that captures attention. And I suggest that’s what the wartime boffins had in mind with blitz.

The word is said to have had much more impact on public sensibilities than say the word bombing.

It is a German word that has been absorbed into the English language and blitz became popular to reinforce the horror of German bombing raids on London.

The German word was blitzkrieg, the two parts meaning lightning and war. The War Illustrated of October 7, 1939, reported: “In the opening stages of the war all eyes were turned on Poland, where the German military machine was engaged in Blitz-Krieg - lightning war - with a view to ending as soon as possible.”

known how the poor Poles felt when the German blitzkrieg suddenly started ‘blitzing’ around their ears yesterday noon.”

The New York Daily News of October 19, 1939, made a satirical comment about a “blitzkrieg of puns”.

Almost overnight the word blitz took off in the English press.

The Daily Sketch of September 2, 1940, reported “we ‘blitz’ hun planes in weekend raids”.

A week later the Daily Express of September 9 reported “Blitz bombing of London goes on all night”.

The Daily Sketch obviously liked the word because on September 21 it reported “Neighbourhood Theatre braved the blitz and yesterday presented a new play”.

Blitz was in our language and it was here to stay.
