MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I really enjoyed spending some time at Allora for this week's cover story on the town's upcoming 150th anniversary of local government celebrations (pages 4&5).

We hear the term 'Best Little Town on the Downs' bandied around a fair bit but Allora truly is a lovely place.

And like all of our country towns and villages on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt it's full of friendly folk and is a community which sticks together like glue.

The Allora and District Historical Society is likewise full of dedicated volunteers who have been busy in recent times organising a packed program of events for the 150th celebrations on the weekend of July 20 and 21.

The central theme is 'Come Home to Allora' and the Historical Society has a vast treasure-trove of family history material and are happy to assist those with past roots locally to re-trace their family steps over the years.

We've run with this story well in advance of the July weekend to help put out the call to get involved in the celebrations, particularly to former Allora-ites for whom the weekend will be a great opportunity to catch up with family connections - and celebrate the joys of small town life.

LITTLEPROUD EASILY RETURNED AS MP

BY JEREMY SOLLARS David Littleproud was comfortably returned as the LNP member for Maranoa at the federal election last Saturday 18 May. On a two-party preferred basis Mr Littleproud secured 71.99 per cent of the local vote, with Rosemary Moulden of Pauline Hanson's One Nation taking out 28.01 per cent.

As of Monday of this week around 19,000 postal votes were still being counted in Maranoa but the overall result was not expected to alter.

Mr Littleproud told the Free Times on Monday he was keen to retain his cabinet post as Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources but the final decision about ministerial portfolios would be made by Prime Minister Scott Morrison later this week.

The MP has had a meteoric rise through

the government's ranks, being handed the senior ministerial portfolio just 16 months ago and he is widely seen as a potential future Nationals leader.

Mr Littleproud spent election day touring the vast Maranoa electorate, which as well as Warwick and Stanthorpe stretches all the way to the South Australia, Northern Territory and New South Wales borders and as far north as Winton and Barcaldine.

At time of printing of the Free Times this week the Morrison Government was expected to have a majority in the House of Representatives of just one seat but counting of postal votes in all electorates and the Senate was continuing.

Mr Littleproud said on Monday the government expected to end up with 34 Senate positions and to be negotiating with around five or six cross-bench senators over its legislative program.

"It's deeply humbling to be returned with

such a swing in Maranoa, and to have the Liberal Nationals returned to Government," Mr Littleproud said.

"It's also extremely humbling to have been praised by the National Farmers' Federation, with whom I have such a great and constructive relationship.

"Fiona Simson and Tony Mahar are great leaders for their organisation and for farmers.

"Through this relationship and working towards a shared goal we've been able to achieve a lot for farmers, and there's a lot more to do yet, including delivering policy announced during the campaign.

"As it stands, Maranoa has delivered a swing toward me of around 6 per cent for a two party preferred result of 72 per cent.

"I'm particularly pleased to have won the booth of Barcaldine - the birthplace of the Labor party. ●

The positions are understood to involve remuneration of more than $200,000 each.

Mr O'Byrne's most recent previous role was that of general manager of Cairns Regional Council, where he managed 250 staff and a budget of $150 million.

Prior to that Mr O'Byrne worked in the private sector as National Operations Manager for WENGFU Australia, as Chief Executive Officer of Spectran and in other roles for Jemena, Impact Fertilizers, Hydro Tasmania, Ionik Consultation and Johnstone, McGee and Gandy.

One of the Southern Downs Regional Council's three most senior managers has quit his role less than eight months after being appointed.

A council spokesman confirmed on Monday of this week that Graham O'Byrne had resigned from his position as Director of Infrastructure Services.

"Council would like to thank Mr O'Byrne for his contribution while employed with SDRC, particularly in regards to water and water management during this time of drought, and wish him all the best for the future," a council statement issued today said.

It is understood Mr O'Byrne - who has nearly 30 years' experience as a senior executive in both the public and private sector - handed in his resignation last Friday 17 May. The Free Times attempted to contact Mr O'Byrne for comment as to the reason for his apparently sudden and unexpected departure from the council but had not received a reply by time of printing this week.

He was appointed to his role last September along with Director of Sustainable Development Jane Stroud.

Jo Morris was appointed Director of Corporate and Community Services in late 2018.

llora - otherwise known far and wide as 'The Best Little Town on the Downs' - turns 150 years young in July of this year and the call is out well ahead of time for those with past family connections to "come home" and celebrate.

The dedicated volunteers of the Allora and District Historical Society have been working their collective fingers to the bone in recent times getting ready for the milestone and the Free Times caught up with them last week to see where things are at.

The event will mark 150 years of local government and the connection of the Southern Railway Line from Toowoomba to Hendon in 1869, and the Allora and District Historical Society will also celebrate its 50th year.

The preliminary program includes the official opening of Allora's restored Old

Shire Hall, where award winning Southern Downs Town Crier Bob Townshend will share a special call and a brief history of the past 150 years.

There will also be 'lost crafts' demonstrations, a Pioneers' Dinner, a Bush Poets' Breakfast, a Beard Growing Competition and more.

Allora's charming historic buildings and museums will be open to view and there will be toe-tapping entertainment, as well as good old fashioned fare including food and beverages all weekend on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July.

One key event will be the Roll Call of Sportsmen and Sportswomen at the Commercial Hotel at 1pm on the Saturday to announce Allora's first 'Sporting Immortal'.

But a major focus will be on family history, with the Historical Society having in its possession a veritable mountain of genealogical information on families past

The Society offers a by-appointment research service where visitors can examine microfiche and digital material to uncover their Allora roots, even welcoming visitors from the United States just last month who were on a fact-finding hunt. The family history material is housed in what was the former Nevilton State School building which sits behind one of the Society's two museums, the former School of Arts on Drayton Street, with the other museum being the old council chambers not far away on Warwick Street. The museums house all manner of memorabilia, with one slightly weird item recently donated being the 'caul' from the birth of a Frank Reppel in July 1907.

A caul is a membrane which occasionally clings to the face of an infant at birth and occurs with about one in 1000 babies. In the past the presence of a caul was thought to be associated with protection from drowning and considered good luck for seafarers.

COVER STORY SOME HISTORY ...

The region surrounding Allora was first explored by Europeans in the 1840s - the town was surveyed in 1859. Its name is believed to derive from an Aboriginal word "gnarrallah", meaning waterhole or swampy place.

Following European settlement, the history of the area is entwined with two famous pastoral homesteads in the vicinity of Allora - Glengallan and Talgai.

The original 'Talgai' run was taken up

by E E Dalrymple in 1840. The creek that runs through Allora is named in his honour.

Built in 1868 for the Clark family, Talgai Homestead stood on 300,000 acres (1200 km²). The homestead is built of sandstone and covers sixty squares.

Allora Post Office opened on 31 March 1863.

The Allora State School opened on 1 May 1867. On 31 December 2008, it was

renamed Allora P-10 State School.

The municipality of Allora was formed in 1869 (hence 150 year celebration).

Allora remained a municipality until the formation of the Allora Shire in 1915 with the inclusion of part of the Clifton Shire with the Municipality of Allora. (In 1903 the former Clifton Divisional Board). The Clifton Shire Council surrounded the Municipality of Allora until 1915 (which was only one square mile). In 1994, the Shire of Allora was amalgamated into the Shire of Warwick.

In 1886 the first fossil evidence of early human occupation in the area, the Talgai Skull, was found on Talgai Station, embedded in the wall of Dalrymple Creek.

Radiocarbon dating suggests the Talgai skull is between 9000 and 11,000 years old. It is believed to be the skull of a boy of approximately 15 years of age who had been killed by a massive blow to the side of the head. ●

The Free Times caught up with Jo Frankcom and daughter Layne (pictured) on election day last Saturday at an Allora State State School fundraiser at the Senior Citizens Centre where voting was taking place.

JUST WHAT IS IT ABOUT ALLORA? Jo Frankcom and her husband Marty and their three young daughters have only lived in the Allora area for the last couple of years but in that time the town and its people have truly grown on them.

They shifted from Mount Tamborine to swap the busier pace of coastal hinterland life for the tranquility of the country and happily reside on 50 acres at Deuchar, with the girls - Ella, 14, Layne, 11 and Ruby, 3 - going to school and day care in Allora.

Jo works for Queensland X-Ray in

Warwick and Marty for the Southern Downs Regional Council on the roads crews, and Jo says their move was one of their best-ever decisions.

"Tamborine was pretty hectic whereas here it's a much more relaxed lifestyle," Jo said.

"You've got everything you need here - butcher, doctor, dentist, IGA and everything else.

"The girls are into polocrosse and while they were able to compete when we lived at Tamborine we're now a lot closer to the other clubs.

"We just love Allora - it just feels like a friendly and safe community."

The Historical Society's two museums are a rich trove of Allora history.

Lyn Wright says family history research is hugely popular with the Historical Society.

No progress on Granite Belt wind farm - yet.

WIND FARM OUT OF PUFF? There is still no progress on a wind farm project approved by the council in late 2016 in the Stanthorpe area.

Brisbane businessman Tim Lucas gained approval for six wind turbines on his 'Rabbit Ridge' wind farm site in the Dalveen-Pozieres area but sold or transferred the site and the project to Chinese-owned wind farm developer Goldwind Australia in 2017.

under construction - about its plans for Rabbit Ridge.

A Melbourne-based spokeswoman has said several times the company is "currently exploring opportunities to deliver the Rabbit Ridge project and contribute to achieving the 2020 renewable energy target".

She again said this week Goldwind's response "has not changed since your previous enquiry".

Residents of the area objected to the wind farm plan on the basis of its visual appearance, noise from proposed backup generators and the potential for the turbines to interfere with aerial firefighting.

BOTANIC GARDENS? Funding could also be allocated in the 2019-2020 council budget for the development of a 'Stanthorpe Botanic Gardens' along Quart Pot Creek between Britannia and McGlew Streets.

A 'capital project concept' has been prepared for councillor consideration proposing the spending of $950,000 over the next 10 years to develop the Botanic Gardens.

The concept document states that the project could "create an environmental tourist attraction using clever sustainable water conservation techniques". â—?

Police have charged three men in relation to an alleged incident at Stanthorpe State High School last Wednesday 15 May. A statement issued by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) says local police will allege that at about 1pm on that day a silver Triton dual-cab ute was seen driving past the school and an occupant fired several pellets from a gel blaster out of the front passenger window of the ute at the school office window.

"The rear passenger allegedly got out of the car and spoke to the Vice Principal before fleeing in the ute," the QPS statement said.

"Local police intercepted the ute in Amosfield Street and three men in the ute were apprehended and the gel blaster gun was allegedly located in the vehicle.

"The three men, two aged 20 and the other 19, were each charged with going armed to cause fear and are all due to appear in the Stanthorpe Magistrates Court on Wednesday June 19."

The upcoming Southern Downs Regional Council budget could contain funding to upgrade the town of Dalveen's reservoir at a cost of $500,000.

A 'capital project concept' document prepared by council officers for budget consideration by councillors states the structural repair work, including work on the outlet pipe, is needed to "deliver safe reliable drinking water to Dalveen".

The document states that the council does not own or have on easement on the land on which the reservoir is located and has commenced discussions with the landowner.

The document also notes there is "no defined path to access the reservoir".

A separate 'capital project concept' document proposes spending $33,000 on premeditation of Dalveen's water bores.

GRANITE BELT SPLIT FIGHT CONTINUES

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Granite Belt Community Association (GBCA) has released a critique of the recent Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) report on the proposed de-amalgamation of Warwick and Stanthorpe.

The critique was prepared by the Finance Sub-Committee of the Granite Belt Community Association De-amalgamation Project Steering Committee, with advice and review provided by consultant David Spearritt."

GBCA President Rev Alan Colyer said in its critique the association has "raised a number of serious concerns regarding the data that underlies the QTC report, especially in regards to the staff figures and costings of de-amalgamation".

"We argue that the data provided

by Southern Downs Regional Council management to the QTC authors is incorrect and exaggerated and hence does not in any way reflect efficient council operations, which is required under the legislation," he said.

"One of the major issues of contention is that 180 people would be required to staff a new Granite Belt Council, when the previous Stanthorpe Shire employed 110.

"A letter was sent to each of the councillors prior to the council vote and not one responded with comment or explanation on the number of staff within the QTC report.

"A letter was also sent to council CEO David Keenan asking if the council agrees

that the staff numbers adopted by QTC in its report are a fair estimate of what would be required for a new GBRC. "To this day no response has been received.

"The exaggerated costing within the QTC report has enables councillors to use the excuse that our proposal was not financially viable and vote to not support it.

"A copy of the critique of the QTC report has been sent to Queensland Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and the GBCA has respectfully asked him to consider the critique in deliberations regarding whether the conflicting information contained within our GBCA report and the QTC report should be referred to the Change Commission for further assessment.

"At our recent public rally more than 1200 attendees raised their hands when asked if they wished for the Association to continue on with the proposal to create a new Granite Belt Council.

"I vow that we will honour the community's wishes and continue our fight to be governed locally by a Granite Belt Council".

The critique of the Queensland Treasury Corporation report: "Southern Downs Regional Council: Financial analysis of deamalgamation proposal, 8 April 2019" can be viewed on the GBCA website at www. granitebeltcommunity.com Southern Downs councillors at their April meeting formally voted against de-amalgamation but Queensland Local

Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe will have the final say.

The Free Times asked Mr Hinchliffe for his current position on the deamalgamation proposal and received the following response "The information I have before me requires detailed consideration, and the process for any change to occur has been crystal clear from the very beginning," Mr Hinchliffe said.

"I've always said any proposal for change needs to stack up financially and have the support of the affected councils."

Mr Hinchliffe did not indicate support or otherwise for de-amalgamation, nor did he provide a timeframe on when he will make a final decision.

OPINION ...

The Granite Belt Community Association (GBCA) has written a comprehensive critique of the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) report into the proposal to form a new Granite Belt Regional Council (GBRC).

This critique, which has been sent to the Minister for Local Government (and is downloadable from www. granitebeltcommunity.com), provides clear evidence that the QTC report is fundamentally flawed.

For example, the notion that the GBRC will require double the office staff of Goondiwindi Regional Council is flawed.

The suggestion that two tropical councils

that receive over 2000mm in annual rainfall are appropriate benchmarks for the GBRC is flawed.

The exaggerated estimates of transition costs are flawed, and so on.

I encourage all Granite Belt residents to read this critique document and make your own conclusions regarding the quality of the QTC report.

I also wish to thank GBCA Finance Sub-Committee members, Tony Minuti, Tony Hassall, Michael Pradella and Amanda Harrold, for their contributions to this critique document, along with particular thanks to consultant David Spearritt, who was so disappointed with the quality of this QTC report, that he willingly volunteered his assistance for no charge.

Finally, I wish to encourage everyone in this amazing Granite Belt community to not give up the fight. There is no doubt that our GBCA proposal is financially viable.

The past Stanthorpe Shire Council proves this and the current Goondiwindi Regional Council proves this.

Please write to the Minister, write to your local MP and anyone else you can think of.

In 2007 a significant mistake was made and since then our community has been forced to deal with the consequences.

It is time for this mistake to be corrected and for us all to get back to doing what we should be doing - celebrating and improving this wonderful Granite Belt community. â—?

LATEST ON SDRC EMERGENCY WATER

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has secured emergency water allocations for Stanthorpe from Glenlyon Dam in Tenterfield Shire and Coolmunda Dam at Inglewood, with Stanthorpe's Storm King Dam expected to run out of water in at least five months without significant rain.

Mayor Tracy Dobie addressed the media last Thursday 16 May during a meeting in Warwick with Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio, Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh and representatives of Tenterfield Shire.

The meeting of mayors was to discuss future water supply security for the Darling Downs and Tenterfield regions, including a plan to pipe water from the Clarence River system in New South Wales, which has been talked about for decades.

While the meeting was a positive example of local government working collaboratively on planning for the future, the immediate water situation remains top of mind for Southern Downs residents, with Leslie and Connolly Dams in Warwick and Storm King Dam at Stanthorpe at close to critically-low levels.

Tenterfield Shire has around 160 days of urban water left in storage.

Cr Dobie last week assured residents of all towns and villages in the Southern Downs council region that "no-one will run out of water, it just comes at a cost".

The Clarence River at Grafton in NSW. would be carted by truck from Glenlyon and Coolmunda Dams if necessary, and that the council also has a 600 megalitre state allocation of underground water from nearly 30 wells and bores on council land across the region, which would need to be "re-commissioned" and equipped.

The council earlier in the year did not

rule out the option of bringing bulk water into the region by rail from elsewhere, such as Brisbane's Wivenhoe Dam. Council consultants are currently undertaking aerial and underwater surveys of Leslie, Connolly and Storm King Dams to determine silt levels and the true "dead storage" level of each of the dams.

That data is expected to be made public in June.

With the council issuing fines to householders for breaching current 'extreme' water restrictions the Free Times last week asked Cr Dobie what was being done to manage water use by local businesses.

Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio, Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh, Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie and Cr Gary Verri of Tenterfield Shire met in Warwick last week to discuss the future of water security in the Darling Downs and Border regions.

The mayor said the council is "working closely" with commercial high water users such as the John Dee export beef abattoir and Carey Brothers abattoir at Yangan to reduce water usage by at least 30 per cent and to complete "water efficiency plans" as soon as possible.

The mayors last week discussed the long talked-about idea of constructing a pipeline from a potential new 86,000 megalitre dam on the Maryland River in Tenterfield Shire near Liston east of Stanthorpe.

Such a dam would receive water pumped

from the Clarence River system in New South Wales and would be gravity-fed to the Darling Downs via a pipeline from the dam directly into the Condamine River at Elbow Valley east of Warwick.

The plan has been mooted since the early 1990s.

The mayors last week acknowledged such a scheme - which in theory would significantly boost agricultural production and urban water security on the Downs would need broad political support across local, state and federal governments.

Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Michael McCormack have publicly voiced their financial support for Emu Swamp Dam but the April budget did not contain a specific allocation of funds for the project.

The Queensland Government would have to meet the remainder of the cost and to date has not made any funding commitment.

The Southern Downs Regional Council's position on Emu Swamp Dam is that local ratepayers should not have to meet any of the cost. ●

MATILDAS WIN A LITTLE R-E-S-P-E-C-T With less than two weeks until the start of the Women's World Cup the Matildas' team has been announced and our girls have earned a level of respect on the pitch that sees them being spoken of as possible if not probable contenders.

Team USA currently hold the title and are favourites to go back to back in France. The home side is also expected to give a good site for their supporters. Many believe the Matildas led by Sam Kerr along with Caitlin Foord and Emily Glelnik will provide plenty of headaches for their opposition.

If the Matildas perform to expectation it will help the Australian Football Federation build their bid to host the next Women's World Cup. The host city will be announced in March 2020.

If you fancy Australia's chances you can pick up odds of 11/1 but after last weekend's election betting fiasco, I wouldn't be expecting any early payouts.

Games kick off on June 8 with the final played on July 7. Australia opens their campaign on June 9 with a game against Italy.

It is going to be a busy few months for Sports lovers. The eyes of the tennis world will be focused on France as Roland Garros hosts the French Open which began this week.

The Cricket World Cup is on the horizon and most importantly State of Origin Game One is only a matter of sleeps away now - on June 5.

The Blues and Maroons name their teams this weekend and put paid to the speculation of who is in and who is out.

And then the fun and mind games begin in earnest.

Casey SUPER BIKES COMING TO MORGAN PARK Australia's fastest athletes on two wheels will race into the Southern Downs for the 2019 Motul Pirelli Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) at Morgan Park.

Motorcycling Australia will bring Australia's premier motorcycle road racing championship to Morgan Park for the Queensland round of the Championship from 5th to 7th July 2019.

Featuring the Kawasaki Superbike Class, a field that includes no less than six previous ASBK Superbike Champions in a packed schedule of top-class racing, the event promises a fun-filled weekend for the whole family.

Councillor for Events, Sport, Parks and Recreation Yve Stocks said hosting the ASBK at Morgan Park further cements the Southern Downs as the Horsepower Capital of Australia.

"As a keen motorsport fan, I am excited to see Australia's best riders tackle the challenging Morgan Park circuit in what promises to be an intense competition," Cr Stocks said.

"Morgan Park and its world-class facilities continue to attract the top motorsport competitions in Australia to the Southern Downs, which brings in visitors from outside the region and provides a boost to our local economy.

"ASBK is offering free entry to the event on Friday, July 5, before qualifying and the racing action kicks off on Saturday and Sunday.

TURKEY TRIPLES ON TANNY MENU Turkey Triples were on the menu at the Tannymorel Bowls Club on Thursday and attracted a good roll up of teams.

Honours went to Paintbrush, Geoff Davis and, Johno Johnson. In the Runners up spot was the team of Tuck, Geoff Creighton and Grumpy.

In round one the overall winners had an impressive 17-6 win over their opponents Marg Thompson, Myrtle and Jean Calam.

In the Skips only round Johno Johnson cemented their overall win with an impressive 24-8 win against Philpsy.

The runner's up squad of Tuck, Geoff Creighton and Grumpy won their opening game against Pat Geaney, Al Buse and Julie Buse 16-8. Skip Julie Buse then went on to score a 14-10 win over Jean Calam.

Grumpy was all smiles after his 13-9 win over Tony Schubert in the skips only.

In other first round games Dave Scotney, Noel Fletcher and Darryl Busch scored a 15 - 12 win over Greg Cross, Barb Cross and Penguin Penn. Dave Scotney played in the Skips only round and the game against ended in a 12 all draw.

Shep, Gordie and Mick O'Leary scored a narrow 11-10 win in their game against Browny, Joe Stratham and Peter Arrest.

Shep scored a 15-14 win in the Skip's only round.

Bill Lee, Marg Wright and Philpsy won their opening game against Tina Schubert, Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert 14-9.

ORIENTEERS HEADING TO GORDON COUNTRY The "Gordon Country" property, in the Goomburra Valley, east of Allora, will be the venue for Saturday's orienteering event hosted by the Toowoomba's Range Runners Orienteering Club.

The Goomburra property was first mapped and used for orienteering as part of the Asia-Pacific Orienteering Championships held on the Southern Downs in July 2000 and remains a popular venue for local orienteering events.

The combination of eucalypt forested slopes and open grazing land along Dalrymple Creek, makes the property ideal area for both beginners and experienced orienteers.

In addition to courses for club members, Saturday's event will also have short, easy courses for beginners. There will be instruction available on the basics of map reading and navigational skills and anyone interested in trying orienteering is most welcome to attend.

No special gear is required although sturdy footwear and a hat are recommended. Compasses may be borrowed at the event.

Starting times will be between 11.30am and 3pm. The assembly area for the event will be signposted off Inverramsay Road, approximately 26km from Goomburra.

move on the leader board. Don and Jackie Croft and the ole Fella Col Munday and Margie Cowel joined the fray. Col was on fire putting bowls on kitty all night and thought it was great to play with Croc and give Thommo a hiding.

While those shenanigans were in play Abby Petersen, Reba and Fritzy got on with the job of winning the round. They scored maximum points with a 19-8 win over Ashton, Liam and Wayno.

Runners up on Friday night were Lochy Fritz, Pricey & Cozzie who played Fraser, Steve Locke & Glen Boal and had a 12-5 win.

In other games Jackie Croft, Hamish and Lochy Boal (14) defeated Margie Cowell, Shaggs & Ryan Boal (7).

Codie Muller, Lyn Coleman and Bretto scored a 9 -6 win in their game against Maddy Weier, Jack McIvor, Mick Weier.

Col Munday, Stu and Croc were cock a hoop over their 125 win over Don Croft, Ash and Thommo.

Mitch Muller, Brodie and Roy defeated Maddy Grayson, Damo & Clayton 15-12.

After two weeks of competition Fritzy sits at the top of the leader board with 10 points and is crowing. He needs to keep looking over his shoulder because Reba is breathing down his neck with nine points and she is followed by the pack (Croc, Mitch Muller, Lochy, Fritz and Cozzie). Still in the hunt are Codie and Abby on six points and a host of players on five points. Next round this Friday night.

BROTHERS AMBUSH COWBOYS After opening the 2019 season with five straight wins the Cowboys were expected to notch up another win when they played Brothers at Glenholm Park last weekend.

Brothers who had only one win to their credit this season were at full strength and had nothing to lose came from behind to snatch an 18-16 win and serve the Cowboys up a defeat for the first time in 2019.

Despite a low completion rate and unforced errors, the Cowboys led until deep into the second half. The Leprechauns only hit the front in the 70th minute and held off a spirited Cowboys attack in the dying moments of the game to claim the win.

It was game on when the two sides returned to the paddock and Warwick came out guns blazing testing the Brothers defence and were first to score after a good back line movement saw Harry Sullivan cross. The conversion was unsuccessful.

It was a tough second half with both sides having their chances. Brothers looked likely late in the game when Bender picked up a dropped ball and dashed 30m before he was collared by the Cowboys defence.

Mitch Watson earned himself a stint in the bin for a second effort in the tackle.

Brother's capitalised on a 12-man Cowboys defence and Mitch Revell scored.

Pegler made it three from three to put the Brethren in front in the dying minutes of the game.

The Cowboys could have levelled the game with a shot at goal following a penalty but chose to go for four points and came up empty handed. As the full-time siren sounded Brothers had held on for only their second win of the season.

Matt Grew, Cowboys Coach said that his side simply did not turn up saying there was a level of complacency in their game. He praised Joe Fuimaono and Mitch Watson for their efforts. While the Coach said there was no cause for panic following the loss, he emphasised the team need to work hard on what they are good at this week at training.

Grew congratulated Brothers on their win saying their lack of mistakes won them the game.

Brother's Mitch Revell was named Hutchies Man of the Match.

In other games Warwick had a 16-10 win in Reserve Grade. Brothers were successful in the under 18 game scoring a 28-20 win.

In second division Newtown defeated Warwick 40-6.

Wattles Warriors were forced to call on all of their experience to hold out the charging Goondiwindi Boars in the match at Platz Oval on Sunday.

Wattles looked to be control of the game when they led 18-4 in the second half. They had dominated the first half with two tries to Michael Marshall which were converted

by Travis Burns.

The home side extended their lead to 18-4 early in the second half after winger Braydon Wilson scored and Burns converted.

Keen to snap a two-game losing streak, the Boars showed greater intensity in the second half. A try to Joe Saunders ten minutes into the half sparked a spirited surge from the Boars. After three unanswered tries in 15 minutes the Boars levelled the scores at 18 all with 14 minutes left in the game.

Scores remained level until three minutes before full time when Braydon Wilson took matters into his own hands and scored his second try. The trusty boot of Burns put the home side a converted try ahead with less than two minutes to go.

Wilson then put the game to bed with a try on full time to give him three for the day.

With the conversion successful the final score was 30-18. The final score line not representative of the intensity or closeness of the game.

In Reserve Grade Wattles had a 32-16 win while the Under 18's went down 30-24 to the Boars A GRADE: Wattles 30 (Braydon Wilson 3 Michael Marshall 2, tries Travis Burns 8 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 18 (Thomas Davis, Jason Saunders, David McGrady tries Kerrod Sampson goals) Wattles play the Hawks this weekend in an away game at Gatton.

GREMLINS FIGHT BACK BUT BOARS TO STRONG The Stanthorpe Gremlins went down 20-18 in a tight game against Goondiwindi at Sullivan Oval on Saturday.

It wrapped up a full day of rugby league for the Gremlins with junior games played earlier in the day.

The Gremlins wearing black armbands in honour of former Gremlin Peter Shatte suffered their first loss of the season in a game where the lead changed several times.

Goondiwindi opened the scoring with a try to Brady Martin. The Gremlins hit back when Lachlan Hendry scored and took the lead with the successful conversion by Jake Burrill.

At the half time break Stanthorpe held a narrow 6-4 lead.

After the break Connor Hartley-Simpson put the Gremlins further in front when he scored and with another successful kick from the boot of Burnell the Gremlins led 12-4.

The Boars went on the attack scoring three tries to once again wrestle the lead from the Gremlins\. Goondiwindi held a 2012 lead with less than 15 minutes left to play.

The Gremlins never stopped trying and in the dying minutes of the game HartleySimpson crashed over for his second try of the afternoon. Jake Burnell added the extras to make it three from three and narrow the margin to two points as the siren sounded. The final score 20-18 in favour of the Boars.

WIN FOR BYRNES Paul Byrnes picked up another win at Sporters last Sunday when he outscored runner up Margie Locke ahead of a good field. Casey Leotta was consistent returned the Best Gross score of the day and held the Pin Shot on the 17th. The Run-downs went to Nick Casey and Nikki Waterworth. Nick Casey also took the Pin Shot on the 12th.

The Pro Pin went the way of Max Jones.

Nikki Waterworth and Phil Zikan each left with a meat tray.

Sporters are reminded that from Sunday May 25th tee off will revert to the winter tee off time of 8.00am - 8.30am.

NUMBERS DOWN FOR MALLET GAMES Eight players hit the court for the Association Croquet games last week. Jenny Tunbridge and Heather Widderick scored a decisive 26-18 win in their game against Joy Newman and Carol Verwey. Tunbridge played well and had a break of four hoops in a row and a break of three.

Peter Tunbridge and Andrea Denkewitz had a win in their game against Effey Russell and Grace Howard. It was a close game with the final score 18-14.

Numbers were down for the Gateball games on Friday with only five players on court to make up the two teams.

Andrea Denkewitz and Grace Howard formed one team; Heather Widderick, Joy Newman and Les Williams the second.

The first game went the way of Andrea and Grace - the score 13-10. Grace Howard had a 'gate and touch' which gave her an extra shot and she went on to knock some of the opposition balls off court. Denkewitz and Howard had another win in the second game. In a close game they won 11-9.

The combination of Denkewitz and Howard also nailed the third game after Denkewitz scored an ' agari' on her last turn to secure a 12-10 win. The team made it a clean sweep for the day with a win20-11 win in the final game.

RATS DOMINATE The Warwick Water Rats scored possibly the best win in the club's history when they defeated Condamine on Saturday 60-0 in the Darling Downs Rugby Union B Grade.

The Water Rats held a commanding 27 nil lead at half time and went on with the game in the second half to post the big win.

Kai Etherington was named player of the match.

While Warwick dominated the set pieces Lachlan Winten and Jared Fearby both had strong games.

David Reynolds and Dean Cullen played well in the front row along with Richard Main.

Following the win Warwick sit in third place on the ladder behind St George and Goondiwindi.

PENTATH A NEW EXPERIENCE Simeon Burill is better known for in Orienteering circles but last weekend he called on all of his endurance and skills as he competed in all five events in the annual Warwick Pentath Run. The five races in the Pentath event are held over two days and each race is a different format beginning with a half marathon on Saturday morning. Following breakfast and a break runners competed in a 4.6km cross country. Saturday events wrapped up with a 5klm flat road race.

For those keen to compete in all events it was an early start Sunday for the 10klm hill climb from Killarney to Queen Mary Falls.

The Pentath wrapped up with a 1500m street "sprint" in the Warwick's main street.

Burrill who is no stranger to tough top-class competition had his first crack at the Pentath. He has previously competed in several Junior World Orienteering Championships and is the current 17-20 years national middle-distance champion.

On the weekend Burill finished second in three of the disciplines behind overall winner Aidean Hobbs who was for the second time successful in all five legs of the competition.

Burrill was second in the half marathon, the cross country and 1500. He also finished fourth in the gruelling ascent from Killarney to Queen Mary Falls.

In the women's event the overall winner was Brisbane visitor Olivia Lennon. ●
