National Volunteer Week this week is the largest celebration of volunteers in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than six million Australians who volunteer. NOOSA SERVES UP FESTIVAL FARE BY MARGARET MACCOLL On a blue sky Saturday morning with a glass of proseco and gourmet plate Noosa residents and tourists kicked back and listened as celebrity chef Matt Moran passed on the tricks of cooking perfect seafood. The first of the festival's many celebrity chefs to take the stage at the Village Festival at Lions Park Noosa Heads Matt grilled Moreton Bay bugs with garlic butter before steaming some coral trout. "I wanted to do something you could take away and cook yourself," he said. The festival program of visiting chefs, winemakers, sommeliers, distillers, brewers and producers played host to 10,000 guests over 113 events across five days. While chefs and food experts fronted stages across the village local food producers prepared their home grown food. Among them was Dale Spencer of Eumundi Meats who fried up his own sausages on the barbecue. One of only six butchers in Australia to be selected to compete in the World Cup Butchers in Sacromento, California in September 2020, Dale will pit his skills against those of butchers in 20 countries globally. Heads of Noosa owner Craig Masterton was pouring his award winning beers. After launching only four months ago Heads last week picked up awards at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) for its Japanese Lager, Summer Dusk, Bock and Pilsner all winning medals, the Summer Dusk winning gold. As guests streamed into the village others were taking their seats for the Long Lunch served by local restauranteurs along the length of Hastings Street. And others explored an array of dining opportunities across the hinterland. Sunday the rain poured down and the grass became soaked and muddy but that didn't deter crowds from pouring in. People ducked under the many shelters across the venue and quick thinking organisers Tourism Noosa handed out ponchos at the entrance. The festival wrapped up on Monday with

New for the Festival, the Industry Day commenced with brunch on the beach designed by OzHarvest Ambassador Cameron Matthews who used the food surplus from the Festival that was followed by a panel discussion on the Future of Food, hosted by Delicious editor in chief Kerrie McCallum. Issued raised included seafood sustainability, mental health in the industry, supporting local breweries and mentoring for growth. "As a Festival we certainly have the duty to inspire change and build awareness of current industry issues," festival director Sheridah Puttick said. ●

Ferrari roared into Brisbane on Friday with an elegant cocktail party held in the VIP tent at the Noosa Food and Wine Festival Village to announce its presence in Noosa. There was beluga caviar to taste, food prepared by the Waterfront Restaurant and the Ferrari 488 Spider and Ferrari Portofino cars were on display at the event held in partnership with Tourism Noosa and Tom Offermann Real Estate. Ferrair Australasia CEO Herbert Appleroth and Ferrari Brisbane general manager Shaun Mackie welcomed guests at the cocktail night to a taste of the lifestyle enjoyed by the Ferrari family. O
rganising festivals across the globe, breaking world records, fundraising for charities and building an orphanage in Nepal ... it's all in day's work for long-time Noosa local, musician Oz Bayldon. Oz grew up in Noosa attending Tewantin Primary in the '70's and since then he has organised and broken a number of musical world records which have fundraised to build a shelter and help fund a school in Nepal, a conservation centre in Peru, a free creative school in London and a disabled sports program in Noosa. "It's in my nature wanting to work with charities ... without having that I sort of feel like I'm dying," Oz said. "All of my teachers at school said they weren't surprised when they found out what I was doing. I guess I must've had 6 NOOSA TODAY

a charitable heart when I was at school without even knowing. "Noosa was the best place in the world to grow up. Noosa was a fishing village back then and it was still a community which can be hard to see now but I think that goes for everywhere in the world." Oz went on to build, renovate and launch some of London's biggest music venues, becoming one of the highest award-winning operators in London over the last 20 years, including gaining the title of 'Venue of the Year' UK wide. "I first got into music when my mates and I started a band when we went to school at Noosa High. I was the lead singer and I played guitar. In our grade there was three bands, and we played gigs everywhere in Noosa when we were 16. We took off and moved to Brisbane for university and eventually the band broke up," Oz said. "I then went to Greece for eight months

where I set up a bar." And in what sounds like a scene from the movie Mamma Mia, Oz said the bar owners just gave him the keys after he renovated the place and let him run the bar. "After Greece, I went to London and worked behind the bar in a pub and that bar won the best pub of the year," he said. Oz then went on to run a number of award-winning music venues in London, including; White Lion in Streatham, Tabernacle in Notting Hill, Bedford in Balham and POW in Brixton. "I turned an old gothic church into a gig venue, which was really cool and we had massive artists like Adele play there. That venue had a large community aspect to it which I really liked and that's when I realised I wanted to do work for charities," Oz said. "I then started the first charity pub in the UK, which was all donated and recycled
from the public. When setting it up, I'd turn up at the pub each day and there would be more paint or furniture on the door step which had been donated from the community. The venue had 28 rooms upstairs for homeless families and we opened up a music venue that got named as the top five best music venues in South London. "We then started a free creative school for kids that did street dance, film and television, editing, studio recording and we even built a radio station. So, I sort of gave all these kids a home away from home where they could hang out together, be creative, and stay out of trouble. I ended up getting invited to Downing Street Reception as we were the only charity educating kids without using a public purse. I spoke in the House of Commons to try and educate other charities on self-sustainability with shelter and education." noosatoday.com.au

Oz Bayldon's charity team at a reception held by the UK Prime Minister at 10 Downing St. Oz is also the creator of the Active Community, a platform where he organises musical fundraising treks, community festivals, an ethical program for school leavers and more extreme gigs. These extreme gigs have seen Oz break three world records, including the highest canyon swing playing an instrument, the highest altitude gig on land, and the longest gig performance at 44 hours non-stop. The journey to these world records began when Oz was on a solo tour on the Sunshine Coast. "Noosa local Ian Farrington came to one of my gigs and he said he was organising an international music tour in Nepal so I decided to join him and brought acts over from the UK." "We did a lot of gigs in Nepal and on my day off I went for a walk-through Katmandu where I spotted a malnourished, homeless child with a disability on the street. He needed help so I picked him up and carried him to a sandwich shop where there was a bunch of other hungry kids. I fed them all for less than 30 pounds and that changed my life there and then. In that moment I knew this is what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life. "I decided I wanted to build my own orphanage in Nepal and Ian had the idea to do the world's highest gig to raise money. I went and broke the world record with 10 other musicians and that funded the build of the orphanage. In 2009 someone beat my world record so I went back again in 2012 and claimed it again by hiking up 6654m to the summit of Mera Peak, near Mount Everest, before performing a 40-minute gig in freezing temperatures." Oz plans on beating his own record again, by doing a gig on top of Cho Oyu, a mountain on the border of Tibet and Nepal, which would add 2000m to his record. His record for the longest gig was also broken which is why he plans on sailing down the Amazon River while performing for 65 hours nonstop with talented musicians from villages. Oz said the key to this extreme gig was simply staying awake. "We will go into the refugee camps across the globe to see the devastation and hardship that these people endure every day, and the daily battle to survive, highlighting the great work being done there by world organisations. "The whole process is to promote peace, highlight the great work that is being done in the refugee camps and to raise money for conservation of the Amazon. It will have an emphasis on teaching the locals eco-tourism and sustainability, so they can get away from logging which is all they know after generations of losing their culture. Our goal is to help preserve their culture, which in turn will protect the local jungle." And it doesn't stop there, the next extreme gig Oz plans on doing will take him high in the sky in a hot air balloon, to do a gig and then continue playing while parachuting down to land on stage for a concert. "This extreme gig is to raise funds for a self-sustainable educational music hub," Oz said. It seems like the constant planning and ideas never stop as Oz has already planned another extreme gig which will be a concert on a boat made from plastic floating in the North Pacific gyre. "Plastic has a huge detriment on our environment and nowhere more evident that in the North Pacific Gyre. We will look at alternatives to plastics, education programs, clean up models and what the future has to offer with and without an alternative," he said. Back home in Noosa, Oz is planning the fourth annual Noosa Come Together festival, which will take place on the weekend of 8-9 June raising funds for the 'Sailability' sailing program for children and people with disabilities to continue on the Noosa River. This event provides an affordable day out for local families in Noosa and across the Sunshine Coast with activities including; children's rides, international food stalls, and two music venues showcasing local and disabled artists. "In the first year we raised $10 grand and it just keeps on getting bigger and better.

The festival is a celebration of being local as it is the only festival that is not targeted at tourists," Oz said. "When I see kids doing outdoor activities that's what makes me happy, that's why I decided I was going to do my best to make more of it happen. "At the festival there will be a Noosa High School 30-year reunion of the 1989 graduates. The idea of the festival is to bring the old community together with the new community. "We are trying to recreate an old festival that was in Noosa when I was a kid, called Noosa Waters. It was a great community event that everyone looked forward to every year."
And like any regular person, Oz has a day job, on the organising comittee for the Gympie Music Muster. The Gympie Muster (August 2225) is the biggest charity-based festival in Australia, with every aspect run by community groups. "All of the money from the Muster goes back into the community and is run by the charity APEX," Oz said. "The planning is going awesome and we've got a few international acts this year which we haven't had before and we're aiming at getting a huge act for next year." LLEW RETURNED IN EASY WIN FOR LNP Liberal National Party incumbent Llew O'Brien was returned to the seat of Wide Bay at last Saturday's Federal Election with almost 63 per cent of the votes, an increase of 4.5 per cent on his 58 per cent win in 2016 under the two-party perferred system. There was a 4.5 per cent swing against Labor this election with candidate Jason Scanes gaining about 37 per cent of the vote. Mr O'Brien thanked his supporters, saying "the people of Wide Bay have sent Canberra a clear message that they don't want higher taxes". "They reject Labor's lies about health and education funding," he said. "They trust the Liberal and National Parties to keep our economy strong and our borders secure." Mr O'Brien is now looking to deliver on election funding promises on a range of infrastructure, economic, community service, and sports projects that were locked into the 2019 Federal Budget. In Noosa those projects include upgrades to the Tewantin-Noosa Cricket Club and Noosa Tigers AFL and an extension to Sunshine Butterflies. CONCERNS RAISED OVER 1080 BAITING BY MARGARET MACCOLL Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness and cruel effects of 1080 poison after Noosa Council issued notices to residents across Cootharaba and Kin Kin to warn they would supply baits with sodium fluoroacetate (1080) poison to selected properties from 7 to 21 May under its Feral Animal Control Program. Kin Kin farm owner Maureen Piggott said two packs of wild dogs had in previous years attacked sheep on her property before she brought in Maremma dogs which are bred to bond with their flock and protect them against threats including wild dogs which they have done. She questioned the effectiveness of a couple of baits on a large pack of wild dogs apart from causing an agonising death in a couple from the pack. Maureen said she was concerned the baits could be transported by other animals or birds to her land and poison her dogs or may be eaten by dingoes which were regularly sighted in the region but did not normally pose a problem to livestock. "There's plenty of bandicoots, joeys and small animals dingoes can eat," she said. "What happens is if you take out the adults (which would be the first to eat the bait) they teach the babies to hunt. If the young dingoes aren't taught by the parents they take on the easiest way which would be to attack a lamb or baby alpaca." Many studies have been conducted on 1080 which is banned in several countries around the world. RSPCA Australia on its website states "the available evidence on the effect of 1080 on affected species indicates that it is not a humane poison". It suggests an alternative lethal bait containing para-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) that was approved in 2016 against wild dogs and foxes be used. In 2014 the CSIRO conducted a study of the effects of 1080 baiting of red foxes used to protect quokkas in Western Australia. It monitored 100 baits with cameras. It found a high level of uptake from non-target animals including quokkas which took 48 per cent of the baits and feral pigs. Only one fox was observed taking a bait. Noosa Council's Environmental Services Manager Craig Doolan said the baiting program was conducted twice annually and formed part of a broader integrated program targeting wild dogs and foxes. "1080 baits are one part of the integrated program that includes trapping and shooting to effectively control predator animals in rural areas," he said. "During these periods about 130 baits are provided to participating rural landowners.

"Throughout the year, Council supports small-scale baiting in particular areas to assist landholders dealing with specific problems where livestock or wildlife are being impacted by predators." Mr Doolan said before and after the coordinated program, motion-sensor cameras are installed to monitor numbers in the targeted areas. "We take every step to ensure the program is effective, so these cameras carefully track numbers and we rely on the feedback from landholders who understand their properties to see a drop in the impact of the predator species." Mr Doolan said. There have been no reports of a nontarget animal death in Noosa during the baiting period. All baits are tied and buried to prevent uptake by species such as raptors and crows. ●
According to the Australian Electoral Commission's first preference count O'Brien gained more than 36,000 of Wide Bay's 81,000 voters increasing his margin by almost 3 per cent while Scanes gained almost 17,500 votes, a swing against Labor of less than 1 per cent. The Greens' Daniel Bryar and One Nation's Aaron Vico were neck and neck for third placing with Bryar gaining 9.7 per cent of the vote and Vico winning 10.7 per cent which was a swing toward the Greens of 1.5 per cent and a swing away from One Nation of almost 5 per cent. Of the three remaining candidates the Independent Tim Jerome came out on top with 4.45 per cent of the vote, beating the United Australia Party candidate Andrew Schebella with 3.5 per cent and Fraser Anning's Conservative National Party candidate Jasmine Smith who won 2 per cent of the count.LNP gained the majority of votes across all Noosa Shire polling booths although there was a mix of increases and decreases since last election. At Noosa Heads and Noosaville it was almost a tie between the Greens and Labor with each picking up about 22 per cent of the vote. Cooran voters placed the Greens (26%) just ahead of Labor (24%) with LNP only edging them out with 29 per cent. ●
SIGNS NOT WELCOME Residents can have their say in June on Council's proposed new local law being introduced to govern advertising signage which will replace the current regulation under the planning scheme. All real estate signs pointing to open houses, all A-frame and teardrop signs will be banned under the proposed law. Council's Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said the local law retains the status quo on the amount of signage allowed. "This sets Noosa apart from other places, maintaining a total signage area of up to 10sqm per business in commercial and industrial areas, with a size limit of 4sqm per individual sign," she said. The proposed local law makes changes to the current Noosa plan "to reduce visual clutter and maintain the high levels of amenity in Noosa Shire".Ms Rawlings said managing the proliferation of these signs represented one of the biggest challenges for staff. "Not only do they tend to clutter footpaths and impede their use, often the current limitations are ignored with multiple A-frame signs being placed in front of their premises, and generally on public land," she said. "There are also public liability issues associated with these devices. "The proposed changes are not set in stone - we are seeking feedback from business and the community before anything is finalised, to gauge their views." She said a recent signage audit showed more than 80 per cent of businesses had signage that complied with the rules, and that most non-compliance was around A-frames and teardrop signs. MULTIPLE ARRESTS AFTER CRIME SPREE Police have made multiple arrests as they continue to investigate a large spate of recent break-ins and thefts across the Noosa Shire and are urging residents to lock up. Noosa police said there has been an increase in criminals breaking into homes for keys to steal vehicles with the majority of those charged living outside of Noosa and coming to the area to steal. "We have a number of further offences that we are working on and are confident we will obtain a result in those cases as well," Noosa senior sergeant Ben Carroll said."I implore members of our community to assist us by ensuring they secure their vehicles, not leave keys, particularly the service key in the ignition or centre consoles. We ask that people be mindful of where they leave their vehicle keys within their home. Whilst we live in a beautiful location, our area is unlike any other regional centre and we will always attract offenders wanting to commit crimes in our area," he said. Police tracked down property including firearms, a safe and passport, stolen from a rural property on Gumboil Road, Tinbeerwah on 13 May at the property of a suspect after he was sighted by police in Alexandra Headlands on 16 May and chased
on foot and tracked with a police dog. He was taken to his residence where property from this break and enter was located. Zachary Cassius Daddo of an Alexandra Headlands address, born 1995, was charged with burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, eight breaches of bail, unlicensed driving and police obstruction. He appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates court on 17 May. Christopher Daniel Romero, 29, of no fixed address appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 16 May charged with 28 property, drug, fraud and traffic offences in Gympie and across the Sunshine Coast including a business in Hastings Street. Police will allege ROMERO is responsible for committing offences in both Gympie and across the Sunshine Coast including a number of business that were broken into in Hastings Street in the last fortnight. He was remanded in custody to appear on 23 May. A Coolum Beach youth, 17, was charged with entering a vehicle in Traders Lane, Noosaville, and appeared in the Maroochydore Children's Court. A Maroochydore man, 19, was charged with breaking into a vehicle in Claude Batten Drive, Noosa Woods on 9 May
and will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court. A Tewantin female, 16, and Ilkley man Liam Seige Harley, 25, were charged with multiple offences. Harley appeared in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on 14 May charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence and obstructing police. He was remanded in custody to appear again on 10 June. A Tandur male, 24, was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and drug offences after a motorbike was stolen from a Doonella Street, Tewantin on 3 May. The motorbike was located by police at an address in Alexandra Parade, Alexandra Headland on 16 May and investigations are continuing. On 10 May a resident in Janet Street, Noosaville heard his son's car which was parked outside start and saw it drive away. Keys were stolen from the house. A Nambour youth, 16, was later sighted by police driving the car at Woombye. The youth has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. Police also are trying to locate a further suspect for the original burglary offence and are confident he will soon be taken into custody.
Police have also arrested a Matthew Telaulau Czech, 27, in relation to a burglary at Pacific Avenue, Sunshine Beach on 25 April. He appeared in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 14 and 15 May charged with 19 property, drug, fraud and other offences. He was remanded in custody to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 14 June. ●

TURTLE NEST DROP NO CASE FOR NO ALARM SAYS PRESIDENT BY MARGARET MACCOLL After record turtle hatchlings last year of 51 nests between Mooloolaba and Noosa Heads, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care this season from November to March recorded only 16 nests. three or four there's a quieter year," she said. She said turtles take three to five years to fatten up before a season during which they may lay several clutches of eggs. This season there were five nests at Alexandria Bay and others at Sunshine and Sunrise beaches but none at Peregian Beach and altogether the group recorded 1600 hatchlings. Leigh said the biggest deterrent for the turtles was light so the quieter beaches bordering National Park and not houses

"We are pretty good at it now," Leigh said. "We go to the Mon Repos (Turtle Centre) to
get accredited. We don't like to relocate them and only do it when we have to. If we hadn't relocated them we would have lost them." Leigh praised the work of volunteers and the many beach walkers who alert them to signs of turtle activity. VOLUNTEER RIVER WORK INVALUABLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Since 2005 a small group of highly qualified volunteers have invested their time in monitoring and maintaining Noosa's river system and compiling data which is informing government decisions at state and local level. Led by president Bruce Hallett Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) volunteers who work the river have divided themselves into several groups each with their own agenda. Monthly water quality testing, monitoring of shore birds and waders, keeping the islands at the mouth of the river free of weeds is carried out as well as the weekly roster of activities conducted by the River Rangers who traverse the river, creeks and islands to keep it free of rubbish and monitor erosion, mangrove destruction and illegal activity. The members are highly qualified having held careers in areas including pediatric medicine, veterinary science, research science and seaman. When the group first formed about 20 years ago it set about creating a Noosa river catchment strategy and aimed to run various programs. But Council took over the role and engaged contractors to operate it. Over the years as funding dropped away the role was again taken up by NICA.Their work has revealed a diverse river life which includes a healthy fishing industry and abundant boating activities as well as illegal activity and vandalism. "There's a lot of illegal camping," Bruce said. "It's the damage they do, cutting down trees for camp fires and to make pathways to camps. We keep an eye on erosion - some of it's natural and some is the result of man made activities. The more we go out the more data we have for Council to make decisions." The group is in regular contact with the Queensland Police and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. Once a month since 2006 a group led by Alan Briggs conducts a bird count and keeps a close eye on the migratory birds which travel each year from Siberia and Alaska to feed around Noosa. Alan said their data had

When the islands are open to the public a group of volunteers visits to keep the area free of weeds. Council funding has enabled the group to review its data on birds with plans to soon release an information leaflet to the public. The volunteers have also conducted a survey of the river's moored boats and keep and eye on wrecks.NICA members who are also involved in landcare are among the hundreds of volunteers across Noosa who dedicate their time to making the region the place it is today. â—?

Bob helped ensure the seats of Flynn, Capricornia and Dawson remained with the LNP among others including Peter Dutton’s Dickson, all our Sunshine Coast seats, and Herbert was an LNP gain from Labor. Fence-sitting on Adani by Shorten cost Labor votes, and the latest blocking moves by the Qld Labor Government also helped the LNP. Anastacia Palaszczuk must be worried ... her turn next? Bill Shorten tried to channel Gough Whitlam with his rallying call “Vote for change, vote for change“. HANGING WITH PAPA
Sometimes great writing takes you to places not only of the mind but of the road, places you might not have ever otherwise visited. Such was the case many years ago when a couple of awestruck readings of William Least-Heat-Moon's magnificent Blue Highways led me to the bayous of Louisiana and the Spanish moss mansions of the Deep South. Steinbeck had already been my guide through Central California and Monterrey and Salinas, but Heat Moon, as the locals knew him, was almost a contemporary, and his writing led me to such characters as Thibodeaux, his Cajun barber. In Key West, the southernmost point of the American mainland, just 90 miles from Cuba, there was no chance of meeting any of Ernest Hemingway's drinking buddies long since deceased, but this beautiful little town that clings to a patch of sand and reef at the end of the Overseas Highway, is still imbued with the spirit of "Papa", the adventurous rogue who was arguably the greatest American writer of the 20th century. Although Hemingway only lived on Key West for little more than a decade that was rudely interrupted by a long sojourn covering the Spanish Civil War, the characters he met there on the waterfront, on fishing trips and over long sessions at Sloppy Joes's Saloon, peopled many of his novels and short stories for decades to come, and despite the afternoon boozing, fed the creativity that resulted in such early period classics as A Farewell To Arms, Death In The Afternoon and To Have And Have Not, the Depression era novel set in Key West. Last week we checked into a room in a beautifully-renovated early 1900s mansion just a couple of blocks from the 1851 Hemingway home on Whitehead Street, now a museum and still home to 55 seven-toed cats descended from the pets of Hemingway and his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer. A guided tour was the first thing on my Key West agenda, and on it I not only marvelled at the simplicity of Papa's writing room (with stuffed elks and game fish on the walls for inspiration), but learned the back story of the huge swimming pool in the gardens. Apparently when Pauline learned that Ernest was carousing in Spain with fellow war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (wife # 3), she had Papa's prized boxing ring dismantled and in its place built a $20,000 pool - more than double what they'd paid for the mansion - which is still the largest private pool in Key West. Feeling the spirit, I set out to find the ghosts of Papa in the many bars of Key West. Sloppy Joe's still exists but it has moved to a bigger venue, filled on this evening by very loud spring break drunks. But we found the original location up a side street and hoisted a few in memory, wearing my "Write Drunk, Edit Sober" tee shirt in the great man's honour. Of course there is much more to Key West's history than Hemingway's monumental binges. Even in literary history, the town was home to such other greats as Robert Frost and Tennessee Williams, and in politics it was a favourite of Presidents Harry Truman, who made it his vacation White House, and Jack Kennedy, who fished there with Hemingway, and a year after Papa's death, massed troops there ready for an invasion of Cuba that thankfully never happened. Picture: HEMINGWAY HOUSE settlements of the indigenous Calusa through to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, and the United States buying it twice from a crafty Spanish officer before taking control in 1822. By 1860 Key West was one of the richest towns in the US on the back of fishing and salt production, but it was to grow even richer with the development of pirate ship salvage, which gave the growing number of mansions their stunning chandeliers, and the rise of cigar manufacturing in the 1880s. Today its charm survives, despite Duvall Street's titty bars and drag revues outnumbering the period sailor bars and wine houses. The same can't be said about the rest of the long stretch of the Florida Keys. The Overseas Highway that forms its backbone is like an incredibly long Nicklin Way, except the furniture stores have even less appeal. But beyond the highway you can still find gems, like the Rock Reef roadside motel we checked into at Key Largo. A nightmare out front, it turned out to be a gem down the back, with a lawn filled with colourful iguanas leading down to the clear water of the bay, where we enjoyed a spectacular sunset before heading across to the Ballyhoo Roadhouse on the median strip for dinner. I ordered tuna sashimi and the waiter asked: "How would you like your sashimi cooked, sir?" I decided I'd better have it seared, and it was excellent. Pure Florida. Diamonds in the rough. FOOTNOTE: I refrained from any political comment during a campaign I missed completely, but I have to say I was shocked by the result of last Saturday's election. I can understand that not everyone warms to Shorten, but is the alternative what Australia really wants? I write this from the land of Trump, so the answer is probably yes. The people have spoken. You picked a good time to exit, Hawkey. You wouldn't have liked the colour of the future. ●

UNDER EIGHTS DAY CELEBRATION Tewantin State School will be holding its free annual Under Eights Day celebration on Friday 24 May, with many activities taking place around the ovals and the hall. Under Eight's Day is celebrated to create an awareness of services, activities and organisations from the community that are aimed at children and to support their families.At approximately 9am students will assemble in the school hall, with activities commencing at 9:15am. Under Eight's Day this year will have more community organisations and sporting codes in attendance than ever before plus a variety of art, construction activities and giveaways. Tea, coffee and muffins will be available for adults to purchase at the front of the hall, along with a variety of new Scholastic books. Stalls which are run by the teachers range from hot popcorn, a disco in the hall, a gross motor obstacle course, face painting, kite making, bubble blowing and decorating cupcakes.The emergency services which will be attending the event include the Queensland Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Brigade, Queensland Ambulance and Police Service and the SES. AFL, Football/Soccer, Cricket, Athletics and Surf Life Saving are some of the sporting codes that will be represented this year. There is a growing movement in many regional towns around Australia that is actively promoting busking for all the amazing benefits that street performance can bring to rural communities. The not-for-profit association that is on the leading edge of this movement is called the Australian National Busking Championship (ANBC). What could be a better location to participate in the Australian National Busking Championship than Noosa? Building on the enormous success of the last two year’s partnership with the Noosa Come Together Music Festival (June 8 & 9), the busking championship promises to be a bigger and better all inclusive event with a prize pool of over $6,000. The ANBC is a celebration of all styles of music due to the diversity of age and artistry of the buskers who perform at the event, with over 50 artists this year. The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers remain on top of the Hart Sports Division 1 Ladder after a solid seven goal victory over Aspley in Brisbane last Saturday. Noosa have now played everyone within the competition dropping only the one game to Maroochydore by a couple of points. On a beautiful day for football and on a ground that had obviously not had the rain our Weyba Road oval has, the Tigers were able to put the Hornets away in the first half despite the opposition putting players behind the ball to restrict scoring. Isaac McCrimmon was outstanding for the victors in what has been a really consistent year for the skilful Tasmanian. Smooth moving on-baller Jai Fitzpatrick put in another blinder and would be fairing well in both club and league best and fairest counts at the half way stage of the year. Jayden Holt was once again a key playmaker for the Tigers. Footy manager Mitch Woods (who so often seems to go unnoticed) is simply having a superb season as he racked up 27 touches on his wing to again be one of the Tigers best.This Saturday the Tigers are away again as they play Coorparoo in Brisbane before having the bye the following week. Good early two man hard-hitting driving defence put Caloundra on the back foot. The boys then followed the work done at training on our game attack pattern to organise the lead, tip and rip runners. Player of the matches - Saxon and Nate U14 Noosa Dolphins The Noosa U14 young men arrived at Maroochydore Saturday missing 3 vital players. Playing the top team of the competition was going to a harsh challenge. These young men took the field with courage and discipline, and with only 14 players on the field, managed to hold Maroochydore to a 7 all draw. The second game, against a fresh Brothers team saw Noosa start with determination and team work. A proud support team witnessed a great win of 5 nil. All team members stood tall in defence and played hard for one another. More good things are yet to come from these young Dolphins.

WE’VE GOT SPORT FOR ALL SORTS If we stop and take a good look at our community we will become aware that just about every sport known to man is being played. With this in mind we at Noosa Today will endeavor to bring to you their stories and results in which we in Noosa and surrounding districts can indeed take pride. Sad to say that for many clubs their athletes and achievements are going unnoticed. There can be no doubt that many of you will be surprised to note that within our boundaries there are many athletes who are now not only competing, but also making a mark at state national and in some cases, international level. Once again one of our little known amateur athletes has hit the big time on the international scene. Last Sunday competing as a member of the Australian amateur boxing team Cooroy's Taylah Robertson (of the Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy) caused a sensation by winning the gold medal at the International Boxam Tournament held at Castellon Spain. To achieve this Taylah, boxing in the 51kg division had to win four fights in four days. Her first victory was against the Thailand champion, then the French followed by the
Zane Branco in the 200m Final at the World U20 Athletics Championships in Finland. girl from Spain (who was boxing in front of her home crowd with local support making it tougher) and in the final it was against a New Zealand champion. Speaking from his home in Cooroy early on Monday morning her very excited coach Mark Evans said, "This has been a great win not only for Taylah but also for Australia. This tournament which is one of the biggest on the international calendar was conducted under the banner of the European Boxing Confederation; with all referees and judges supplied by the International Federation. To not only win but also gain such international experience is a massive

For the administrators coaches' athletes and families of Noosa Little Athletics the months ahead will indeed be very busy. On June 25 Zane Branco aged 19 (a graduate of the Sunshine Beach State High School) will travel to Townsville as a member of the Australian Athletic Team to represent his country in the Oceanic Championships contesting the 200m events. It is this young athlete who last year finished fifth in the final of the 200 m event

If after flatties then take a walk around the dog beach and woods bay and look for deeper darker waters with current. This indicates a good drop off that flatties love to ambush their prey and soft vibes cast out and hopped off the shallows works very well. With the winds and rain keeping most anglers on land this weekend a few boats managed to get offshore early in the week. Halls reef, Sunshine reef and Jew shoal were the picks with some pelagics and chunky reefies around. These fish taking live bait, flesh bait and also hitting slow jigs with upgraded 3/0 hooks. Keeping leaders around 30lb will help prevent you from getting reefed as the coral trout have been upward of 7kg. Other fish included spotty mackerel, mac tuna and longtail tuna. These fish hitting slugs cast out and allowed to sink before making a rapid retrieve. One way to target mackerel is let your jig hit the bottom and rip it up as fast as you can. You may get bitten off a few times so be sure to use a bit of wire from time to time. Surf fishing is starting to fire up with good numbers of small/medium sized jewfish reported all along the coastline. Finding a gutter and going down during an incoming tide is one way to really set yourself up at night. Using strip baits on
