Police are on the hunt for thugs involved in a 30-person brawl in which two girls were allegedly stabbed near Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on Tuesday 14 May. It is understood the fight broke out between two parties mostly between girls in their midto-late-teens, who gathered at a Fountain Drive reserve about 9.30pm. A 17-year-old girl was treated by paramedics at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and taken to hospital. The 16-year-old girl was treated for stab wounds to her back and arm and was subsequently taken to a children's hospital for further treatment. A 17-year-old girl was treated for lacerations to her hand before being discharged, while a 20-year-old girl sustained injuries to her hand but declined further medical treatment at the scene. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a teenage girl was treated for an injury to her lower body and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition. "One person self-presented to hospital with serious injuries, believed to be from a stab wound sustained during the affray," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. No charges have been laid but "quite a few persons" of interest as well as suspects have been identified, Detective Senior Sergeant of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit Trevor Smith said. He said the fight was believed to have been an "arranged" fight involving mostly females of African appearance. "A fight did occur and a number of girls were injured," he said. "I wouldn't say it was gang related, not by any stretch." He added police regularly monitored "these arranged fights" but this incident "appears to slip through the cracks and it's been undetected." Uni day is all systems go Secondary school students have immersed themselves in the fascinating world of the immune system for the International Day of Immunology at Federation University's Berwick Campus on Friday 10 May. The international Day of Immunology was celebrated annually to raise public awareness of the immune system. The day saw 40 Year 12 Biology students and five of their teachers reinforcing their learning about the immune system through two handson lab sessions and talks from practicing immunologists about their research and career pathways. The event, Superheroes and Rogue Units, was organised by the Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology (ASI) in collaboration with Federation University's School of Health and Life Sciences. Under the guidance of postgraduate mentors and teachers from the participating organisations, students used microscopes and conduct diagnostic tests to view and compare the white blood cell response in health and during diseases like leukaemia and influenza infection. Keynote speakers were Dr Justine Mintern, molecular biologist from Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute at the University of Melbourne; and Dr Danielle Auldist from Federation University's School of Health

health knows how serious it is. This gives us a chance to raise as much awareness as possible." "One member is going to set up his page and share and say for every dollar that gets donated he will run one minute. If his friends and family donate $200, he will run for 200 minutes!"

Mr Maurice said the challenge has been designed with every level of fitness in mind. "You can walk, jog, sprint or run - it's completely up to the person. It's all about raising awareness and getting the word out there." The challenge will end at 3pm on 1st June. Mr Maurice said community members are welcome to book a time at any point over the 24 hours. Last year, the club raised $500, and this year they are hoping to smash that and hit at least $700. "Our goal is to create awareness in the local Cranbourne community, get them involved and active, and raise as much awareness as possible for a very serious illness."

School doors close The state’s only specialised school for blind children, in Berwick has officially entered administration but its founder says “no one is walking away” and are determined to “rebuild.” After closing its doors in February this year, the founder of Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Alan Lachman said Insight was now focused on paying its debts. “Whatever it is the creditors agree to, whatever that is, then the directors of Insight will meet that in the next month,” he said. “There might be some asset sales but certainly not the building.” The school made headlines earlier this year when it revealed at the beginning of 2018, there were only 11 students enrolled. By the end of 2018, Mr Lachman said three or four students were made to enrol in a mainstream school and the rest graduated. The school went into administration on 27 March after Mr Lachman conceded “we had no option.” Mr Lachman, informed the Department that the school decided not to operate in 2019 or 2020. There were no students enrolled at the

Following the appointment of a voluntary administrator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority cancelled Insight’s registration as it was no longer compliant with the minimum standards for registration as a school. When asked how much money Insight was in debt, Mr Lachman said “I haven’t got the exact figure.”

“Everybody seems to focus on the money,” he said. “The main thing is we need to find a new strategy that allows us to deliver not exactly the same service but similar. “The board is not walking away. I’m not walking away. No one’s walking away,” he said. Mr Lachman put down a “lack of a partnership of any kind” with Department of Education and Training for the reason of a lack of student enrolments. “Without support from the Department of Education and Training there are no students - simple as that.” He said Insight was hopeful of a State Government promise of $1.5 million in funding however “the department made them drag out the negotiations as long as possible until we had no time left.” Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the closure of Insight was an “absolutely inexcusable behaviour” by the State Government. “It not only jeopardizes the futures of blind and vision impaired students across the state, but it’s also a colossal waste of Victorian taxpayer funds.”

Councillor fires back at ‘unfair’ claims By Brendan Rees Casey councillor Rex Flannery has hit back at a resident who labelled him a “disgrace” with claims he gave money to a group of youths for “drugs and booze.” It comes after Cr Flannery recently reached out to a homeless 21-year-old man - who has been forced to sleep in a tent at a reserve in Narre Warren - by giving him $50 cash to buy food. Star News made headlines about the incident but an angry resident sent Cr Flannery an email on 9 May saying “You are a disgrace to this community.” The resident, who signed off as ‘B B’, added: “This is you promoting drug use by being on their side,” and “You have turned your back on the taxpayers.” Cr Flannery told Star News the resident was “ill-informed” and he was simply trying to

help the young man find accommodation. He argued what the resident had done to “rectify the issue?” “I’m actually on holidays for my full time job and here I am eight days in still trying to work out a solution to get agencies to help the boy out,” he said. “It’s not my job to go out and clean up this area. “I can only do so much to get him accommodation and help, so I’ve tick all the boxes. “I’m not here to be a social worker but I am there to advocate for the community,” he said. Cr Flannery added: “I don’t have to do any of this but I’m doing it to help the residents because that’s my job as a councillor. Caravan stolen Police have called on the public to help find a caravan allegedly stolen from Cranbourne South sometime between Friday 3 May and Tuesday 7 May. Police allege bandits hitched the van up after cutting numerous locks and driving it through a set of gates while the victim was away from their Fiona Drive property. Investigators have released a picture of the caranvan and call upon anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote the incident number 190162837.

I was sent an email by a resident detailing young people living out the back in a park, so I decided to contact the resident by attending his house. This resident had concerns for his families safety as he had witnessed drinking and fires being lit. Now this is certainly not my role as a councillor to police parks and to remove people from them, but I did go with a news reporter to talk with the young man concerned. Three teens have been arrested after allegedly evading police in luxurious cars in Cranbourne West on Monday 13 May. Police were told of a white Audi sedan and a gold Jaguar sedan allegedly travelling at 150km/h along the Nepean Highway about 12.15am. A number of units attended the area in an attempt to find the vehicles. The Jaguar was spotted by police and evaded officers when they attempted to intercept it. The vehicle was tracked and stop sticks were successfully deployed in a bid to stop the car. The allegedly stolen Jaguar was then dumped in Evans Road and three males ran from it. Canine and others units were quickly on scene and the alleged offenders were arrested after a short search. Police are currently interviewing two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old in relation to the incident.

A Langwarrin couple is pleading for the safe return of their caravan after it was stolen from their property on Wednesday. Daughter Sarah Smith said her parents had only bought the van in December and were looking forward to a relaxing retirement in it but felt that their plans had now been ruined. “They’ve only had two trips away so far, it’s the start of their retirement. “After working all your life, it’s being able to reward yourself and go out and buy a van and start to travel. I’ve got a campervan; my brother has one too, so it’s all those family trips we were planning. My mum has seven grandkids to look after, and she was looking forward to enjoying that time with the grandkids.” She said she believes the theft was planned, as it looks like the burglars brought an angle grinder to cut the tow ball and release the van before driving off with it. A report has been lodged with police. On Thursday, a possible sighting of the lost van was reported from Somerton on the Hume Highway, being towed by a silver Nissan Navara. Ms Smith said she was grateful for the community’s help so far, but hoped the van could be found soon. She recommended other caravan owners find ways of protecting their vans. “You can get GPS trackers that are really good in caravans, so if your van is stolen you can track where it is. The thing is, everyone who has a caravan has it on their front yard and if it’s got a tow ball lock, thieves aren’t scared because they’re prepared.” The stolen van is a Jayco Sterling 2010 model, and is white and burgundy with a dint in the driver’s side towards the bottom. The registration is T82954. Anyone with information is urged to contact Carrum Downs Police.

Bitter blow for a battler By Cam Lucadou-Wells No one needs to have their car stolen - least of all, Hampton Park terminally-ill mother Lisa Hart. She spent Mother’s Day driving around Cranbourne in a forlorn attempt to find her 18-year-old Nissan Pulsar. The reliable ‘second car’ was stolen from Fountain Gate shopping centre’s outside car park near the south-east bus stops on Friday 10 May between 6-8pm. Three days later, it was found as an incinerated wreck in Kirkham Road Dandenong. The loss was a cruel blow for an exhausted Ms Hart, a 51-year-old breast cancer surviver diagnosed with terminal secondary cancer in her lymph nodes in November. Her family have been hit by thousands in out-of-pocket expenses as she pursues trial drugs to prolong her life. There’s $2200 for a machine to drain fluid from Ms Hart’s arm, $500 for an arm compres-

sion sleeve as well physio treatments. “There’s no justice,” she says. “Sometimes you think you run out of tears but I haven’t. “Cancer makes you sick and it makes you broke. It financially destroys you. I just think to the universe - can I have a break?” The worst thing is now fearing for her family’s safety, Ms Hart says. She hopes the thieves don’t track down and break into the family address. “I’ve never laid in bed at night before, thinking someone could drive up and steal the other car and car keys - but now I do.“ The family will now have to dig deep for another car to help shuttle two children to school and university. There’s also the youngest daughter Isabeau’s state softball training around Melbourne, netball in Cranbourne and Ms Hart’s visits to Peter Mac cancer centre in the CBD. The Pulsar had been used by Ms Hart’s husband to get to the train station for work and by

her daughter Samara to study at Deakin University, Burwood. Samara now faces two-hour commutes on public transport to get to uni, while Dad takes the bus to Narre Warren train station. The car had run with little problem, and was likely to last another five years, Ms Hart said. She’d planned to give it to her youngest daughter next year. Ms Hart is otherwise fighting on as she undergoes medical trial after trial. “The treatments get worse and worse until you can’t stand them anymore. “I’m desperate not to die while my kid is at VCE. I was a little bewildered by the Opinion piece in the Star News (9 May) by Mr John Glazebrook. Bewildered by his comments about Casey being at the crossroads which I thought a little parochial and his obvious dislike for the RUAP. It has also been my observation that councils, since "Adam was a boy", have been a stepping stone for "would be" politicians and those wanting security and perks. It is also my opinion that Australia is overgoverned and that there is at least one level of government that could be dispensed of without any real loss to the country which may actually be both financially advantageous and efficacious. As to why he has singled out the RUAP and two of their candidates and not the ALP/LNP/ Greens etc is a mystery. While flying the multicultural, populist, globalist flag he berates Danny Nalliah who I believe is a migrant or is of migrant background. Surely the wise would listen to those that have come from countries where unvetted multiculturalism of the type we seem to have inherited has failed, including the re-entry of Muslim fighters back into their adopted countries like Sri Lanka, France, Germany and England. Mr Glazebrook should perhaps practice the scientific method which he espouses in relation to the Australian experience with the multitude of failed experiments with this current immigration format. That's if he can ever winkle out the actual statistics from VicPol or the State government or perhaps speak to any of the hundreds of householders and small business owners that have had experiences with the new breed of immigrant. I'm sure he will be actively supported by the real estate, insurance and security industry that has probably enjoyed a spike in business activity. I did note the latest affront to the community with VCAT upholding the 80-plus applicants' appeals who had successful convictions for serious offences to the community who were under deportation orders from IMMI and who are now free to wander the streets of Casey and elsewhere. Strange that Mr Glazebrook criticises Cr Crestani and Nalliah and then refers to the challenge of climate control (aka climate cooling/ global warming depending on what finding you read) and then proposes that we need a leadership model that handles a myriad of challenges including ironically high population growth/ quality of life/natural environment. Maybe both Nalliah and Cr Crestani do in fact offer a model that deals with just that. Most definitely Mr Glazebrook does not! Charles Harris, Pakenham

Scaling the â€™G for charity By Brendan Rees A South East woman is stepping up for a good cause. Mandy Lewry of Cranbourne East says she's nervous about taking on the steps at the MCG for a charity event next month but will draw inspiration from her cousin. "My dear cousin Brooke fought her battle with MND for nine years and sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 37," she said. Ms Lewry will scale the grandstands at the MCG when it hosts the Stadium Stomp on Sunday 30 June, which raises money for various charities. "I do get a little bit nervous each year leading up to the event, but that's mainly because I'm unfit, and am an asthmatic," she said. "I say every year I will get fitter for it, but I don't. But you know what somehow I get

through it! "I struggle and I'm the last or nearly lady out our team, but my thinking of Brooke gets me there." And their team has grown bigger each year: "Last year Brooke's son and her nieces and nephew participated in the junior stomp and they will again this year!" she added. The first time she joined family and friends at the Stadium Stomp, she said Brooke sat at home eagerly watching Facebook to keep updated with their photos and messages. "Brooke was so incredibly grateful for the love and support from us all doing that for her and all MND sufferers. "It is the best thing I've been involved in (apart from the Big Freeze fundraiser day)! "We raised over $3000 dollars last year for Fight MND," she said.

Phone tower lease earner By Brendan Rees Casey Council stands to earn about $20,000 a year under a proposal to lease a small portion of land at Casey Fields for a Vodafone telecommunications facility. The facility, which involves a 4m by 6m site, would replace a 25 metre light pole at the Cranbourne East athletics track with a new 41.6 metre pole and reinstall existing floodlights, resulting in improved mobile phone reception. It's proposed the equipment box panels would be located on the outside of the existing sporting fence - all at Vodafone's cost. Casey councillors resolved to give public notice of its intention to grant a lease to Vodafone Network at their 16 April council meeting.

Council will now consider any public submissions until 6 June. If none are received, council will grant a lease to Vodafone - subject to council's solicitor approval. Under the plans, the land would be leased for up to 30 years with maintenance, including the removal of graffiti, being the responsibility of Vodafone. The equipment box will include a 2.8m high chain black mesh fence to match the existing sporting fence with 3m wide access gates, a council report said. Councillors also agreed the first year's rent would go towards capital improvements at respective reserves. It's expected the facility will increase the uptake of mobile data services such as smart phones, tablets and data cards, according to a

Families in Melbourne's growing South Eastern suburbs are a step closer to having an exciting new local school, after a site was secured to build the proposed Thoroughbred Primary School. Minister for Education James Merlino today announced land at Thoroughbred Drive, Clyde North has been acquired for the school. Thoroughbred Primary School (interim name) is part of the Government's school building boom that will see 100 new government schools open over the next eight years. This includes the yet to be officially named Clyde North East Primary School which is set to open for term 1 in 2020 on Glenrose Boulevard. The Victorian School Building Authority recently released digital renders of what the different learning spaces at the Clyde North East school will look like. This school will cater for 525 students from the fast-growing Clyde North community once completed.

The Victorian Government is building the Education State with an unprecedented $3.8 billion investment in improving, upgrading and building schools to ensure that every community can access a great local school where students are supported to achieve their best. Minister for Education James Merlino said: "We'll open 100 new schools over the next eight years - creating thousands of jobs and ensuring every child has a great education at their local public school." Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said: "I'm excited that the community's vision for a Clyde North Primary School is turning into a reality and students will get to attend a brand new school with first-rate facilities." "It feels like only a short while ago we were putting a shovel in the ground to mark the start of construction at Clyde North East. "These are much needed schools for our growing community who have called Clyde North home and it's only a Labor government that's getting them done."

Public invited to sign book In the wake of the tragic events that occurred in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, the Mayor and Councillors are inviting members of the community to show their support and sign a special book of condolence. The condolence book was introduced at council meeting on Tuesday 7 May where Councillors and meeting attendees had the opportunity to sign the book as a mark of respect; it followed a minute's silence to honour the victims of the attack, as well as their families. It will be available for the general public to sign from Wednesday 8 May until Wednesday 15 May, after which it will be sent to the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka to Australia. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon briefly spoke of the tragedy at Tuesday night's meeting. "The City of Casey would like to take this

opportunity to acknowledge the recent tragic events in Sri Lanka, which killed at least 290 people and injured hundreds more," she said. "The event has left many of us at a loss for words and rocked with emotion. "We at the City of Casey would like to convey our thoughts and prayers to those within our community and across the world, who have been affected by this heartache. "We would also like to recognise Casey community members who have been directly affected by this disaster and offer our support as you come to terms with what has happened." Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body's musculoskeletal system, including the spine. The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years, however significant growth in this specialty has required the establishment of a dedicated unit. The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019. The fourth floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s South East. The unit has the capacity for 32 beds, primarily focussing on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, is now also utilised for full knee replacements. IPL site for dry eye Many of us know of someone who is affected by Dry Eye Disease, or personally experience the symptoms such as dryness, scratchiness, soreness, irritation, burning or watering. Optometrist David West of Eyecare Plus Cranbourne says there are many factors that cause the symptoms of Dry Eye Disease including age, sex, race, pollution, systemic health (in particular, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis), a previous history of cataract or refractive surgery, air conditioning and central heating and the demands of a modern lifestyle, particularly computer screens and smart phones. Mr West said most patients with skin and eyelid inflammation (ie rosacea) will also suffer from inflammatory ocular conditions such as blepharitis, which exacerbate the disease. "The unstable tear layer in Dry Eye Disease is mainly caused by a dysfunction of the Meibomian Glands in the eyelids, which produce the oily layer on the top of the tears. The cornea, the clear ‘window’ at the front of the eye, becomes exposed and triggers a cycle of inflammation," Mr West said. "Whilst some of the symptoms can be controlled with the use of artificial tears, antiinflammatory and antibiotic eyedrops, warm compresses and the like, we are now using a technique called IPL (intense pulsed light) to provide longer-lasting relief. "You may be aware of this same treatment for rosacea and facial rejuvenation." Mr West said that as the name suggests, bursts of intense light are applied to the eyelid area - usually four sessions, a fortnight apart. Frustrated with the lack of practical opportunities for young people in the dance industry, Alex saw a need for a youth-run organisation where they could foster local talent, provide hands-on experience, and build a collaborative community of like-minded people passionate about dance and stage production. Now in its third year, Spark Productions will tour their production of Ariadne, a 90-minute contemporary dance show accompanied by a full professional orchestra at Bunjil Place, Narra Warren at 7.30pm on Thursday 23 May. The 30 performing dancers are aged 7-25 and all elements are designed and executed by youths including choreography, sets and lighting. Ariadne is based on the popular Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, told from the often forgotten perspective of the heroine. The piece is a modern take on a woman

who misunderstands herself and the nature of humanity. Set to a live orchestra, the contemporary dance explores undertones of struggle, closure and acceptance, and teaches us that not all monsters should be conquered. Alex began dancing when she was just two years old and choreographs all shows for Spark Productions. She is proud to provide a safe, welcoming place for creative individuals to come together. "Studying dance at University didn't provide the experience that I was looking for. I wanted to get straight into the workforce but there was no opportunity for me, as a young person, to lead projects and learn on the job," she said. Commission thrown out By sports editor Russell Bennett The AFL Gippsland commission's May monthly meeting began at around 6pm at the Morwell Bowls Club on Tuesday. By 6:05pm, all of its six commissioners were asked to resign by AFL Victoria. Those commissioners were acting chairman John Schelling, John White, Greg Maidment, John Brookes OAM, Cayte Hoppner and Paul Buckley - the latter of whom was not at the meeting. The stunning development happened as part of agenda item 4 in the meeting - 'AFL Victoria Update'. White, from Pakenham, has had a long involvement with the Garfield Football Club; is a former chief executive of Super Rules, and coached high-level football in Queensland. He spoke with Star News soon after the dramatic developments unfolded. "I'm devastated," he said. "As a commissioner for two-and-a-half years, with a deep passion for community football, I feel this decision has long-term implications for the direction of football throughout the Gippsland region. "In my view, it appears there's some motive by AFL Victoria in regards to the future of football in our region. "This evening we were aware that AFL Victoria was attending our regular monthly commission meeting. "Our understanding was that the purpose of that meeting was to review the AFL Gippsland commission. "There is no secret to the fact that the AFL Gippsland commission has struggled, like many other commissions, to make ends meet financially as they administer football across the region. "AFL Gippsland found itself in the position of not having sufficient funds, and had sought to have the support of AFL Victoria to assist in rectifying a historical problem, which we believed was going to happen. "To our surprise, the AFL advised at the start of the meeting that it was their view that the commission was trading insolvent and they requested that all commissioners resign. "Their view was a form of protection for the volunteers who sat on the commission. "During questioning at tonight's meeting, it was established that - given our resignations as commissioners - additional directors were appointed immediately, all of AFL Docklandsorigin, and the AFL would fund the deficit incurred by AFL Gippsland.

"This, in no way, damages the good work being undertaken by the current staff of AFL Gippsland. "(Region general manager) Ben Joske has been a breath of fresh air and has shown fantastic leadership, and has put the ship on the right course. "This has devastated the commissioners again, as the working relationship between all was starting to show positive results. "Had AFL Victoria supported the commission, as had been requested, this situation could have been avoided." Star News understands that the AFL Gippsland commission imposed a levy on its

clubs in 2017, which was designed to assist the state of its accounts. That amount has, in the main, not been paid - according to documents seen by Star News. White concluded by saying: "I posed a question (at the meeting) about the future fees associated for the clubs in the Gippsland region. While there was no direct response to that question, it's fairly clear that the cost for these clubs will increase significantly." A memorandum sent out on Tuesday night from AFL Victoria's community football development manager, Stephen O'Donohue to 'Region Commission Chairs and Region General Managers' - seen by Star News - states: "AFL Victoria advises that the AFL Gippsland Commission has resigned, effective immediately. "In discussions between AFL Victoria and the AFL Gippsland Commission, it became apparent that a fresh approach to the region was

required. AFL Victoria will appoint an interim Commission while it consults with local stakeholders on the makeup of a new Commission. "The AFL Gippsland Region Administration Centre (RAC) will continue to operate in its current format, and the changes do not impact on other regions. "Whilst the AFL Gippsland Commission has worked in the best interests of the game in Gippsland, the time is right to revitalise the Commission to progress the game. AFL Victoria believes the changes will help further support football in Gippsland and ensure the best possible structure to deliver investment for the growth and development of Australian Football in the region. "AFL Victoria thanks the AFL Gippsland Commission for their contribution to football in the Gippsland region and wishes them well in their future endeavours."

There were few winners across the ground for the Panthers, but Reece Twyford and Jack McGuiness battled manfully. Devon Meadows slumped to 2-5 on the season as they were unable to overcome a slow start against Red Hill. Having kicked just one goal in the first half, the Panthers trailed by 33 points at the main break and whilst they rallied in the second half, it was never going to be enough as Red Hill ran out 45-point winners, 10.19 (79) to 5.4 (34). The Redbacks came out firing in the first half, slamming on 15 goals to one to hold an 84-point lead after the first half of play. Nathan Carver (six goals) was one of 14 individual goal-kickers as Hampton Park won 25.12 (162) to 2.5 (17). DIVISION 4 - ROUND 5 Lyndhurst was a class above Carrum Patterson Lakes at Marriott Waters Reserve. The Lightning struggled to get going in the first half, to lead by just one goal at the main break, but a

She went back and calmly slotted the match-winner with just seconds remaining to give the Demons a three-point win, 5.5 (35) to 5.2 (32). Cavs snare double OT win There are wins that will be remembered for a very long time, and on Sunday afternoon the Casey Cavaliers Championship men's Big V team delivered one of those wins. The McKinnon Cougars went into Round 8 undefeated, but the Cougars are undefeated no more after the two sides played out an instant classic. Facing McKinnon on its home floor is arguably the toughest task in Big V basketball, but Casey came to play and jumped out of the blocks to hold a 33-25 lead after one quarter of play. As good teams do, the Cougars responded in the second quarter to trail by just one-point at the main break. The second half was a titanic battle between two great teams. With 41 seconds left in regulation, Casey's Brent Hobba drained a triple to level things up, 101-101. Neither team could score what would've been a game-winning bucket the rest of the way and the intense shoot-out headed to overtime. Brandon Polk stepped to the free throw line with 15 seconds remaining and calmly drained both shots to level the scores, 113-113. The Cavs played tight defence for the final 15 seconds, forcing the Cougars into a tough triple which missed. The game headed to double overtime. With the scores level at 123-123, the Cavs had a chance to go for the win and win they did! points and 9 rebounds) were all extraordinary in the win. The night before, Casey claimed a big home win over Keilor in Casey Basketball's 'Ballin' for Breast Cancer' event. The annual 'Pink Round' event, which raises funds for the Breast Cancer Network Australia, was another huge success, with three Casey teams taking part in a tripleheader while decked out in pink uniforms.

The tally of funds raised isn't finalised yet, but keep an eye out for next week's Cranbourne Star News for the final amount raised, which is expected to be in excess of $8000. Taking on Keilor, it was another brilliant team effort that powered Casey home with six players scoring in double figures, led by sharpshooter Matt Donlan (21 points). The team shot a very healthy 50 per cent from deep on

their way to a 109-90 win. The terrific weekend sees Casey sit second on the ladder with a 9-2 record. Unfortunately for the Cavs, though, the Championship women fell to Keilor earlier on Saturday night. The Cavs' offence spluttered all game as Sarah Halejian (24 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals) played a lone hand. The Thunder poured in 50 points in the paint to come away with a 95-67 win. The loss sees Casey fall to 4-4 on the season to sit sixth. The Youth League 1 women kicked off the 'Ballin' for Breast Cancer' event on Saturday night and scored a comprehensive win over Geelong, 85-51. As has been the trademark for this team for some time now, their defence powered them to victory as they forced the Supercats into 23 turnovers with 19 steals. Steph Leclerc (9 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 4 points) and Lauren Tuplin (11 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds) were busy, while Peta Rhodes' fine season continued with 17 points and 5 rebounds. The Cavs solidified their place in the top four with a 7-2 record. On Sunday in Geelong, the Youth League 1 men fell to the Supercats after going just 3/30 on three-point shots. Blake Taylor (24 points and 9 rebounds) did all he could to keep Casey in the contest, but it wasn't enough as they fell 76-69. Casey sits fourth on the ladder with an 8-3 record. All teams hit the road in Round 9. The Championship women and Youth League 1 women are in action on Saturday night, taking on Southern Peninsula and Craigieburn, respectively. On Sunday, the Championship men face Blackburn and the Youth League 1 men take on Altona.

Within Gunnâ€™s firing line By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 4 What a Gunn. In a match that flipped on its head so frequently after half-time it was impossible to know who would walk away with the fourpoints, it came down to one moment, from one man in the dying minutes to seal a result. Berwick forward Tim Gunn stepped up to the plate, wheeled onto his left boot and snapped the Wickers to victory by a whisker, only moments after Beaconsfield had snatched the lead with a Matthew Johnson major in a classic 'Battle of the Creek' clash at Holm Park on Saturday, 7.8 (50) to 6.12 (48). Although Gunn's clutch-moment - in a career where he is getting known for producing big moments when they are needed - was a culmination of two hours of intense pressure and the force of the vocal crowd, it was an almighty slug for the most part, but nonetheless engrossing viewing. Both sides really tested each other out in the early parts of the opening term, and it wasn't until classy forward Harry Money juggled a mark and converted that the Wickers were able to truly get their game up and running. Moments later, the returning premiership star James Magner soccered through a goal from the middle of the pack out of nothing, and suddenly they were controlling the match, and showcasing their elite skills, particularly through the likes of Ash Smith and Luke Jellyman-Turner, who were racking up mountains of the footy without Travis Tuck there in the middle. While the Eagles went into the quarter time break without a goal next to their name, they did plenty of things right. When they were able to control the footy, and then find a hole to surge forward quickly, they looked dangerous, with midfielder Riley Verbi particularly dangerous on a wing with his classy ball use. And although it was, at times, a tough game to watch in the second quarter with only Matthew Johnson adding a major for the Eagles, it set-up a fascinating second-half, with the home side really stepping up their game and looking to play more free-flowing footy. Gunn broke the sluggishness with a classy snap early in the third quarter, before a James McLean major and a questionable free kick resulting in a goal to Harry Money (two goals) within a matter of moments suddenly saw the Wickers surge out to a game-high 21-points midway through the third. Sensing the moment, James Magner sharked the centre bounce, handing off to Ash Smith who had a running Madi Andrews to his left, who then drove the ball into attack. Smith once again used all of his class to find another clearance, driving the ball deep into attack where a fumble from the Eagles saw the ball land into the hands of Gunn, who nailed the match-winning shot under immense pressure, putting them back in front. Beaconsfield and Berwick played out a classic 'Battle of the Creek' on Saturday. 193293 to tell this year.
