Police are on the hunt for thugs involved in a 30-person brawl in which two girls were allegedly stabbed near Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on Tuesday 14 May. It is understood the fight broke out between two parties mostly between girls in their midto-late-teens, who gathered at a Fountain Drive reserve about 9.30pm.

A 17-year-old girl was treated by paramedics at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and taken to hospital.

The 16-year-old girl was treated for stab wounds to her back and arm and was subsequently taken to a children's hospital for further treatment.

A 17-year-old girl was treated for lacerations to her hand before being discharged, while a 20-year-old girl sustained injuries to her hand but declined further medical treatment at the scene.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a teenage girl was treated for an injury to her lower body and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

"One person self-presented to hospital with serious injuries, believed to be from a stab wound sustained during the affray," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

No charges have been laid but "quite a few persons" of interest as well as suspects have been identified, Detective Senior Sergeant of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit Trevor Smith said.

He said the fight was believed to have been an "arranged" fight involving mostly females of African appearance.

"A fight did occur and a number of girls were injured," he said.

"I wouldn't say it was gang related, not by any stretch."

He added police regularly monitored "these arranged fights" but this incident "appears to slip through the cracks and it's been undetected."

Approximately 70 female students from schools across the City of Casey took part in the Girl Guides Victoria Women of Note Casey Mentor Breakfast at the start of May. The breakfast is an annual event which has been running for 25 years, and is supported by the City of Casey.

It allows year 11 girls from across Casey to come together and hear from mentors from a diverse range of careers, to give them an insight into their potential future pathway. The vocational areas are selected in advance by students and the breakfast's committee selects mentors who are relatable to students and who are able to provide an insight into their professional experiences to date.

"We choose year 11 students because they're seriously starting to think about their future, but it's not a career expo. This is something where they get to hear successful professional business woman speak about their career journey, and speak to other women in careers or professions they might be considering" said Cath Stocks, Co-President Girl Guides Victoria Women of Note Casey Mentor Breakfast.

She said the room was abuzz with conversation, as the students grasped the opportunity to ask questions and hear inspirational stories.

"Some of the advice given is you can do it, never give up, knock on doors, don't just sit back, ask questions, do anything you can to put yourself out there," Ms Stocks said.

"We think it's very inspiring. The mentors are from our own community and they

Mentors this year included a policewoman, a paramedic and an interior designer, and Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon was also in attendance.

Ms Stocks herself was previously a mentor as a business owner, before being asked to join the event's committee.

She said she is proud to be involved in giving back to the committee.

This year's event also welcomed Professor Wendy Wright, scientist and researcher, as guest speaker.

Ms Wright also spoke at the very first mentor breakfast 25 years ago, making this year's speech a poignant throwback.

Ms Wright was chosen because she had been instrumental in paving the way for young women with an interest in science and the environment - concerns which are at the forefront of society's awareness, Ms Stocks explained.

School doors close

By Brendan Rees The state’s only specialised school for blind children, in Berwick has officially entered administration but its founder says “no one is walking away” and are determined to “rebuild.”

After closing its doors in February this year, the founder of Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Alan Lachman said Insight was now focused on paying its debts.

“Whatever it is the creditors agree to, whatever that is, then the directors of Insight will meet that in the next month,” he said.

“There might be some asset sales but certainly not the building.”

The school made headlines earlier this year when it revealed at the beginning of 2018, there were only 11 students enrolled. By the end of 2018, Mr Lachman said three or four students were made to enrol in a mainstream school and the rest graduated.

The school went into administration on 27 March after Mr Lachman conceded “we had no option.”

Mr Lachman, informed the Department that the school decided not to operate in 2019 or 2020. There were no students enrolled at the

Following the appointment of a voluntary administrator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority cancelled Insight’s registration as it was no longer compliant with the minimum standards for registration as a school.

When asked how much money Insight was in debt, Mr Lachman said “I haven’t got the exact figure.”

“Everybody seems to focus on the money,” he said. “The main thing is we need to find a new strategy that allows us to deliver not exactly the same service but similar.

“The board is not walking away. I’m not walking away. No one’s walking away,” he said.

Mr Lachman put down a “lack of a partnership of any kind” with Department of Education and Training for the reason of a lack of student enrolments.

“Without support from the Department of Education and Training there are no students - simple as that.”

He said Insight was hopeful of a State Government promise of $1.5 million in funding however “the department made them drag out the negotiations as long as possible until we had no time left.”

Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the closure of Insight was an “absolutely inexcusable behaviour” by the State Government.

“It not only jeopardizes the futures of blind and vision impaired students across the state, but it’s also a colossal waste of Victorian taxpayer funds.”

Councillor fires back at ‘unfair’ claims

By Brendan Rees Casey councillor Rex Flannery has hit back at a resident who labelled him a “disgrace” with claims he gave money to a group of youths for “drugs and booze.”

It comes after Cr Flannery recently reached out to a homeless 21-year-old man - who has been forced to sleep in a tent at a reserve in Narre Warren - by giving him $50 cash to buy food.

Star News made headlines about the incident but an angry resident sent Cr Flannery an email on 9 May saying “You are a disgrace to this community.”

The resident, who signed off as ‘B B’, added: “This is you promoting drug use by being on their side,” and “You have turned your back on the taxpayers.”

Cr Flannery told Star News the resident was “ill-informed” and he was simply trying to

help the young man find accommodation.

He argued what the resident had done to “rectify the issue?”

“I’m actually on holidays for my full time job and here I am eight days in still trying to work out a solution to get agencies to help the boy out,” he said.

“It’s not my job to go out and clean up this area. “I can only do so much to get him accommodation and help, so I’ve tick all the boxes.

“I’m not here to be a social worker but I am there to advocate for the community,” he said.

Cr Flannery added: “I don’t have to do any of this but I’m doing it to help the residents because that’s my job as a councillor. All I am doing is advocating for the residents.”

Cr Flannery said he also contacted Eastern Regions Mental Health Association, who has arranged a case manager, adding Centrelink was also willing to help.

Rex Flannery’s response on homeless youth In last week’s paper it was reported I gave a homeless young man $50 to buy food. This is true. I was sent an email by a resident detailing young people living out the back in a park, so I decided to contact the resident by attending his house.

This resident had concerns for his families safety as he had witnessed drinking and fires being lit. Now this is certainly not my role as a councillor to police parks and to remove people from them, but I did go with a news reporter to talk with the young man concerned.

After listening to why he was there I reached out to him and offered him help which he ac-

cepted. Now I am on leave from my full time job, and I have put in over a week of my time to try and find accommodation for him and to put a roof over his head.

Once he finds a place to stay I expect the other kids will move on as they are not homeless. I made a meeting with (ERMHA) the Eastern region mental health agency and the homeless young man at Bunjil Place last Wednesday to provide him some assistance and a case manager.

I also drove the young man to Wayys in Berwick in the afternoon to find him some emergency accommodation. With the high demand for accommodation especially around this

time of year we could not get him in anywhere.

These two agencies have stated they will be working with him to accommodate his needs.

Also I have always attended the resident’s house to keep him updated on everything I have been doing.

Now to the keyboard warrior who abused me by email calling me a disgrace for helping this homeless bum. Your words not mine. I ask you what have you been doing to help this homeless young man and to help move these other kids on? Sorry I know, NOTHING. Cr Rex Flannery, Springfield Ward

Teens arrested after fleeing police Three teens have been arrested after allegedly evading police in luxurious cars in Cranbourne West on Monday 13 May. Police were told of a white Audi sedan and a gold Jaguar sedan allegedly travelling at 150km/h along the Nepean Highway about 12.15am.

A number of units attended the area in an attempt to find the vehicles. The Jaguar was spotted by police and evaded officers when they attempted to intercept it. The vehicle was tracked and stop sticks were successfully deployed in a bid to stop the car. The allegedly stolen Jaguar was then dumped in Evans Road and three males ran from it. Canine and others units were quickly on scene and the alleged offenders were arrested after a short search.

Police are currently interviewing two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old in relation to the incident.

Caravan stolen Police have called on the public to help find a caravan allegedly stolen from Cranbourne South sometime between Friday 3 May and Tuesday 7 May. Police allege bandits hitched the van up after cutting numerous locks and driving it through a set of gates while the victim was away from their Fiona Drive property.

Investigators have released a picture of the caranvan and call upon anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote the incident number 190162837.

Stolen van dashes plans A Langwarrin couple is pleading for the safe return of their caravan after it was stolen from their property on Wednesday.

Daughter Sarah Smith said her parents had only bought the van in December and were looking forward to a relaxing retirement in it but felt that their plans had now been ruined.

“They’ve only had two trips away so far, it’s the start of their retirement.

“After working all your life, it’s being able to reward yourself and go out and buy a van and start to travel. I’ve got a campervan; my brother has one too, so it’s all those family trips we were planning. My mum has seven grandkids to look after, and she was looking forward to enjoying that time with the grandkids.”

She said she believes the theft was planned, as it looks like the burglars brought an angle grinder to cut the tow ball and release the van before driving off with it.

A report has been lodged with police. On Thursday, a possible sighting of the lost van was reported from Somerton on the Hume Highway, being towed by a silver Nissan Navara.

Ms Smith said she was grateful for the community’s help so far, but hoped the van could be found soon. She recommended other caravan owners find ways of protecting their vans.

“You can get GPS trackers that are really good in caravans, so if your van is stolen you can track where it is. The thing is, everyone who has a caravan has it on their front yard and if it’s got a tow ball lock, thieves aren’t scared because they’re prepared.”

The stolen van is a Jayco Sterling 2010 model, and is white and burgundy with a dint in the driver’s side towards the bottom. The registration is T82954.

Mother’s Day roof collapse A family of four including a heavily pregnant woman have been left in despair after the kitchen ceiling of their Berwick home collapsed on Mother's Day. Narre Warren SES volunteers were called to the XM single storey home about 2pm near Thornley Drive and O'Shead Road on Sunday 12 May. SES crew leader, Dianne Markham said the garage ceiling had also partially collapsed, resulting in one of the family's cars being stuck.

"After assessing the scene for risks and hazards we judged the house to be unsafe," she said.

"We then went about helping the family of four to retrieve basic clothing, toiletries, medication, school uniforms and paperwork."

Ms Markham said the family were new to the country and "had nowhere to turn" until

SES crews inspect hazards. neighbours reached out to help.

"The neighbours, who they'd never met before, heard me asking if they had any relatives or friends they could stay with. When they'd heard that there was no-one, they kindly stepped in and offered their spare bedroom and another room," she said.

"This will be a Mother's Day that many of us will remember," Narre Warren SES posted on their Facebook page.

A disused Narre Warren tip is in the final stages of being transformed into a $1 million '1001 Steps' tourist attraction.

The Bayview Park site includes views across Casey and out to Port Phillip and Western Port bay.

Unlike the Thousand Steps in the Dandenongs, the walk near Kurll Park nature reserve is hoped to cater for different fitness levels and abilities.

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani, who has spear-headed the project at the old Bayview quarry since 2016, said an official opening would be held in June.

She said while the track was open to walkers, car access to Quarry Road was limited due to final stages of completion.

"This is a testament how something special can be created out of nothing and everyone benefits," she said.

"Casey always does one better, or we strive to so the design team produced a beauty.

"The sweeping views of two bays will make this a place of destination; perhaps even encourage tourism.

"Already sporting groups and individual athletes have mentioned training regimes, and local scout groups are earmarking it for a badge achievement."

She added: "My dream became a reality and I have so many to thank. Cr Gilic, as all my councillor colleagues, has been an amazing support to the project."

Cr Crestani said further vegetation was needed, with a possible cafe and amenities in store.

"It's a beautiful start and is a little easier to complete than our counterpart, where the steps undulate up and down," she said.

"This place will be a blessing to all who come; to find health and a place of reflection and peace."

I was a little bewildered by the Opinion piece in the Star News (9 May) by Mr John Glazebrook.

Bewildered by his comments about Casey being at the crossroads which I thought a little parochial and his obvious dislike for the RUAP. It has also been my observation that councils, since "Adam was a boy", have been a stepping stone for "would be" politicians and those wanting security and perks.

It is also my opinion that Australia is overgoverned and that there is at least one level of government that could be dispensed of without any real loss to the country which may actually be both financially advantageous and efficacious.

As to why he has singled out the RUAP and two of their candidates and not the ALP/LNP/ Greens etc is a mystery.

While flying the multicultural, populist, globalist flag he berates Danny Nalliah who I believe is a migrant or is of migrant background. Surely the wise would listen to those that have come from countries where unvetted multiculturalism of the type we seem to have inherited has failed, including the re-entry of Muslim fighters back into their adopted countries like Sri Lanka, France, Germany and England.

Mr Glazebrook should perhaps practice the scientific method which he espouses in relation to the Australian experience with the multitude of failed experiments with this current immigration format.

That's if he can ever winkle out the actual statistics from VicPol or the State government or perhaps speak to any of the hundreds of householders and small business owners that have had experiences with the new breed of immigrant.

I'm sure he will be actively supported by the real estate, insurance and security industry that has probably enjoyed a spike in business activity.

I did note the latest affront to the community with VCAT upholding the 80-plus applicants' appeals who had successful convictions for serious offences to the community who were under deportation orders from IMMI and who are now free to wander the streets of Casey and elsewhere.

Strange that Mr Glazebrook criticises Cr Crestani and Nalliah and then refers to the challenge of climate control (aka climate cooling/ global warming depending on what finding you read) and then proposes that we need a leadership model that handles a myriad of challenges including ironically high population growth/ quality of life/natural environment.

Maybe both Nalliah and Cr Crestani do in fact offer a model that deals with just that.

Most definitely Mr Glazebrook does not!

Phone tower lease earner

By Brendan Rees Casey Council stands to earn about $20,000 a year under a proposal to lease a small portion of land at Casey Fields for a Vodafone telecommunications facility.

The facility, which involves a 4m by 6m site, would replace a 25 metre light pole at the Cranbourne East athletics track with a new 41.6 metre pole and reinstall existing floodlights, resulting in improved mobile phone reception.

It's proposed the equipment box panels would be located on the outside of the existing sporting fence - all at Vodafone's cost.

Casey councillors resolved to give public notice of its intention to grant a lease to Vodafone Network at their 16 April council meeting.

Council will now consider any public submissions until 6 June. If none are received, council will grant a lease to Vodafone - subject to council's solicitor approval.

Under the plans, the land would be leased for up to 30 years with maintenance, including

the removal of graffiti, being the responsibility of Vodafone.

The equipment box will include a 2.8m high chain black mesh fence to match the existing sporting fence with 3m wide access gates, a council report said.

Councillors also agreed the first year's rent would go towards capital improvements at respective reserves.

It's expected the facility will increase the uptake of mobile data services such as smart phones, tablets and data cards, according to a council report.

Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett said the proposal was a win for the community.

"We definitely need better coverage, it is really bad," he said.

"We are having talks with all major providers to lift their game in the area - if that doesn't happen I will raise it again with council," he said.

Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon has paid tribute to the much-loved president of the Casey South Melbourne Cricket Club whose memory "will motivate future generations who will become as passionate as he was."

Ross Hibbins died on the 27 April, aged 55, after battling an aggressive form of cancer over the past year.

"It was the dream of Ross to make Casey South Melbourne a success story for Victorian Premier Cricket and to produce a club that the members and local community could be proud of," Cr Stapledon said during a council

meeting at Bunjil Place on 7 May where a minute's silence was also held in his memory.

"I have no doubt that Ross delivered on this dream while also exceeding the expectations of the community in providing so many opportunities for future generations to participate in the sport," she said.

Mr Hibbins was the president of the club since 2011 and was a valued community leader, mentor and club developer.

Cr Stapledon said Mr Hibbins was instrumental in helping Council deliver its plan for Casey Fields: "He strongly believed in partnerships and his passion for team work and col-

laboration was at the core of everything he did."

"The Victorian Cricket community and the Casey community are better off for Ross Hibbins voluntary work. Ross leaves a stronger club with a bright future along with a more connected and healthier community."

Mr Hibbins' efforts in cricket include forging a strong relationship with the Melbourne Stars, hosting WNCL, WBBL and Youth Premier League matches, in addition to helping build the club in its normal Premier Cricket competition.

He is survived by his sons Sean and Nathan, wife Kate, and three grandchildren.

Ms Riches says she is grateful for the support of her colleagues and her teachers at Chisholm, who have pushed her to develop and grow her skills.

And with roughly six months left of her apprenticeship, she's not resting on her laurels: taking out Australian Hairdresser of the Year is a possibility for the future, she says.

"That would definitely be good! I think once you start entering these competitions you can only keep going, you can't just stop - you need to keep going until you reach the top. It's definitely a good thing to have going forward, a title under my belt."

A Berwick Chisholm hairdressing apprentice has taken out the coveted title of Hairdressing Apprentice of the Year 2019 at the Australian Hairdressing and Fashion Awards.

Jessica Riches, 20, beat the competition with a collection of images taken at her workplace, Chumba Concept Salon, in Windsor, that showcased her flair for styling.

Ms Riches said her initial reaction was one of shock.

"I was like, 'Oh sh*t! Now I have to make a speech!'" she laughs, "I hadn't prepared anything to say, I hadn't even considered I was going to win because the other entries and finalists were so amazing; it was really stiff competition."

Ms Riches says she believes the judges were looking for beautiful, classic images this year rather than anything too "whacky".

"I really like something classic and really focused on the hair. I wanted something textured, I didn't do colour or anything, I just wanted it to be style-focused - the braids and the waves," she says of her winning photoshoot.

"Being my first photoshoot, I wanted to keep it simple, something that I knew I could do beautifully. But colour and cutting and styling all go hand in hand and in future I would like to explore all those."

It's been a long journey for the apprentice, who submitted her entry to the competition in November last year. Her award-winning path began when she left school to do a pre-apprenticeship in hairdressing, pursuing her dream of doing something artistic and creative.

"I always wanted to do something in the beauty field, I just didn't really know what that was. I love that hairdressing is so practical and you can still get so creative. Hairdressing is ... a really big industry of people who are all

A man's car was damaged at the Hunt Club Village shopping centre carpark in Cranbourne East.

"They got a blatant disregard for other people's stuff," she said.

"I managed to get some of that out with some lovely stuff called paint doctor but the other stuff is just too deep into the paint. It will be a respray job on the door."

According to Ms Dobson, she spoke with staff at Springhill shopping centre who said their CCTV cameras didn't cover the carpark.

"They only cover the main walk areas... sometimes even having camera around the place is pointless."

"We take care of our things and you get some rotten stinker that comes along and has a blatant disregard for what you work hard for."

Ms Dobson said they hadn't looked into getting the doors repaired: "Mix match paint doesn't look real good; probably invest in a full respray at some stage."

She added: "You're still up for the excess."

A Victoria Police spokesperson said local intelligence did not support the reports of vandalism on social media.

"Police would like to encourage anyone who sees any suspicious, anti-social or criminal activity occurring in the area to alert shopping centre security or contact your local police station. If you are in immediate danger call triple-zero," the spokesperson said.

Senator Pauline Hanson has hit the campaign trail alongside La Trobe candidate for One Nation Esther Baker to meet with locals at Akoonah Park in Berwick and CFA volunteers in Clyde.

The party is reaching out to rural and regional areas, trying to meet as many people as possible before the upcoming election.

Ms Hansen claims that 30 per cent of Australians don’t want to vote for one of the main political parties.

“I think the country has been chaos for many years now under the leadership by the major parties,” Ms Hanson said.

“People are looking at One Nation because they trust me, I’m passionate about this country and I believe in a fair go."

Ms Baker is running in her first election.

She’s the party's first La Trobe candidate in 20 years.

“I think the people of Cardinia should vote for us because the general feeling of the entire region is that they’ve had enough, they want change,” Ms Baker said.

“In La Trobe we have an incredible wealth of culture, but we need to make sure we’re in a strong, strengthened position where we can ensure our infrastructure is at a place where we can move forward to look at getting more people in to grow our economy.”

While Ms Hansen has never stood in a state election in Victoria, she is "committed to delivering for Victorians".

With the help of local candidates for One Nation, the party pledges to tackle prominent issues affecting residents in La Trobe.

Casey residents have been left counting the costs after finding their cars scratched and damaged at various carparks.

Vandals have targeted cars at Casey ARC, Casey RACE, Hunt Club Village shopping centre, Springhill shopping centre, and Fountain Gate shopping centre, according to several incidents reported on the Casey Crime Facebook page.

A Cranbourne East man has told how he came back from shopping to find his car had been 'keyed' on the bonnet.

Aaron Van Den Boogaard parked his Toyota Camry at Hunt Club Village shopping centre in Cranbourne East on Thursday 9 May between 8.30pm and 8.45pm.

But when he came back within 15 to 20 minutes he found the scratch marks.

Asked why he thinks her car was targeted; he said had no idea apart from someone disliking his Hawthorn Football Club stickers on his car.

"I went inside, got shopping and come back and it was there.

"I did not park in any spot where I shouldn't have parked," he said.

"I couldn't see any tool, anything sharp that could have done it... I didn't see any other damage, no break in.

"It's 400 to 500 dollars I don't want to spend on a car. Excess is about $500. A panel shop is about 450-500 I got quoted. It's no better," he added.

Mr Van Den Boogaard said he would approach the shopping centre as to whether there was any CCTV footage.

Lisa Dobson from Cranbourne said she was also gutted to discover her Holden Commodore, worth $30,000, had been keyed at Springhill shopping centre carpark recently.

She said her husband had been in the Cranbourne centre for about half-an-hour when someone "walked past with a key down the side."

IPL can help stop dry eye disease Many of us know of someone who is affected

by Dry Eye Disease, or personally experience the symptoms such as dryness, scratchiness, soreness, irritation, burning or watering.

Optometrist David West of Eyecare Plus Cranbourne says there are many factors that cause the symptoms of Dry Eye Disease including age, sex, race, pollution, systemic health (in particular, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis), a previous history of cataract or refractive surgery, air conditioning and central heating and the demands of a modern lifestyle, particularly computer screens and smart phones.

Mr West said most patients with skin and eyelid inflammation (ie rosacea) will also suffer from inflammatory ocular conditions such as blepharitis, which exacerbate the disease.

"The unstable tear layer in Dry Eye Disease is mainly caused by a dysfunction of the

Meibomian Glands in the eyelids, which produce the oily layer on the top of the tears. The cornea, the clear ‘window’ at the front of the eye, becomes exposed and triggers a cycle of inflammation," Mr West said.

"Whilst some of the symptoms can be controlled with the use of artificial tears, antiinflammatory and antibiotic eyedrops, warm compresses and the like, we are now using a technique called IPL (intense pulsed light) to provide longer-lasting relief.

"You may be aware of this same treatment for rosacea and facial rejuvenation."

Mr West said that as the name suggests, bursts of intense light are applied to the eyelid area - usually four sessions, a fortnight apart.

"It is not painful and, in most cases, the patient is able to reduce their reliance on eyedrops and other treatments - sometimes doing without any at all."

Contemporary dance Alex Dellaportas founded youth dance company Spark Productions in 2016 at just 18 years old.

Frustrated with the lack of practical opportunities for young people in the dance industry, Alex saw a need for a youth-run organisation where they could foster local talent, provide hands-on experience, and build a collaborative community of like-minded people passionate about dance and stage production.

Now in its third year, Spark Productions will tour their production of Ariadne, a 90 minute contemporary dance show accompanied by a full professional orchestra at Bunjil Place, Narra Warren at 7.30pm on Thursday 23 May. The 30 performing dancers are aged 7-25 and all elements are designed and executed by youths including choreography, sets and lighting.

Ariadne is based on the popular Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, told from the often forgotten perspective of the heroine.

The piece is a modern take on a woman

who misunderstands herself and the nature of humanity.

Set to a live orchestra, the contemporary dance explores undertones of struggle, closure and acceptance, and teaches us that not all monsters should be conquered.

Alex began dancing when she was just two years old and choreographs all shows for Spark Productions.

She is proud to provide a safe, welcoming place for creative individuals to come together.

"Studying dance at University didn't provide the experience that I was looking for. I wanted to get straight into the workforce but there was no opportunity for me, as a young person, to lead projects and learn on the job," she said.

It made sense to start a company where I could live my dreams and help others to realise their potential at the same time."

This means we need to invest in local Schools, local Hospitals, local roads, and local Mobile Phone Towers for better coverage. We also need to invest in Child Care, Medicare, Headspace, NDIS and Aged Care to improve Government Services.

1. Support for families: Seventy-five thousand locals get tax relief in 2018-19. Holt doesn't need Labor's higher taxes, higher rents and higher living costs. Locals benefit from our economic management, and fear Labor's recklessness.

2. Infrastructure investment: Holt hasn't seen much infrastructure in 39 years under Labor. The Coalition is investing $100 billion in infrastructure, including the $4 billion Urban Congestion Fund. I'll ensure Holt gets plenty.

3. Support for small businesses: Backing small business builds a strong economy and ensures investment in health, education and infrastructure. Over 16,000 Holt small and medium businesses benefit from our tax relief, helping them employ more locals. Bill Shorten's $387 billion tax scheme won't.

I've lived in Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Lynbrook for 21 years and raised my family here. I'm active in the community. My husband's family business is in Cranbourne, and working for a growing business myself, I understand the benefits a strong economy delivers Holt. I want to give back to the community.

Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class.

After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs.

While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era.

From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power.

"We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win.

And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Commission thrown out By sports editor Russell Bennett The AFL Gippsland commission's May monthly meeting began at around 6pm at the Morwell Bowls Club on Tuesday. By 6:05pm, all of its six commissioners were asked to resign by AFL Victoria.

Those commissioners were acting chairman John Schelling, John White, Greg Maidment, John Brookes OAM, Cayte Hoppner and Paul Buckley - the latter of whom was not at the meeting.

The stunning development happened as part of agenda item 4 in the meeting - 'AFL Victoria Update'.

White, from Pakenham, has had a long involvement with the Garfield Football Club; is a former chief executive of Super Rules, and coached high-level football in Queensland.

He spoke with Star News soon after the dramatic developments unfolded.

"I'm devastated," he said.

"As a commissioner for two-and-a-half years, with a deep passion for community football, I feel this decision has long-term implications for the direction of football throughout the Gippsland region.

"In my view, it appears there's some motive

by AFL Victoria in regards to the future of football in our region.

"This evening we were aware that AFL Victoria was attending our regular monthly commission meeting.

"Our understanding was that the purpose of that meeting was to review the AFL Gippsland commission.

"There is no secret to the fact that the AFL Gippsland commission has struggled, like many other commissions, to make ends meet financially as they administer football across the region.

"AFL Gippsland found itself in the position of not having sufficient funds, and had sought to have the support of AFL Victoria to assist in rectifying a historical problem, which we believed was going to happen.

"To our surprise, the AFL advised at the start of the meeting that it was their view that the commission was trading insolvent and they requested that all commissioners resign.

"Their view was a form of protection for the volunteers who sat on the commission.

"During questioning at tonight's meeting, it was established that - given our resignations as commissioners - additional directors were appointed immediately, all of AFL Docklandsorigin, and the AFL would fund the deficit incurred by AFL Gippsland.

"This, in no way, damages the good work being undertaken by the current staff of AFL Gippsland. "(Region general manager) Ben Joske has been a breath of fresh air and has shown fantastic leadership, and has put the ship on the right course.

"This has devastated the commissioners again, as the working relationship between all was starting to show positive results.

"Had AFL Victoria supported the commission, as had been requested, this situation could have been avoided."

Star News understands that the AFL Gippsland commission imposed a levy on its

clubs in 2017, which was designed to assist the state of its accounts. That amount has, in the main, not been paid - according to documents seen by Star News.

White concluded by saying: "I posed a question (at the meeting) about the future fees associated for the clubs in the Gippsland region. While there was no direct response to that question, it's fairly clear that the cost for these clubs will increase significantly."

A memorandum sent out on Tuesday night from AFL Victoria's community football development manager, Stephen O'Donohue to 'Region Commission Chairs and Region General Managers' - seen by Star News - states: "AFL Victoria advises that the AFL Gippsland Commission has resigned, effective immediately.

"In discussions between AFL Victoria and the AFL Gippsland Commission, it became apparent that a fresh approach to the region was

required. AFL Victoria will appoint an interim Commission while it consults with local stakeholders on the makeup of a new Commission.

"The AFL Gippsland Region Administration Centre (RAC) will continue to operate in its current format, and the changes do not impact on other regions.

"Whilst the AFL Gippsland Commission has worked in the best interests of the game in Gippsland, the time is right to revitalise the Commission to progress the game. AFL Victoria believes the changes will help further support football in Gippsland and ensure the best possible structure to deliver investment for the growth and development of Australian Football in the region.

"AFL Victoria thanks the AFL Gippsland Commission for their contribution to football in the Gippsland region and wishes them well in their future endeavours."

It was a disastrous day for the Panthers as the Roos ran riot up forward and held Pearcedale to just one goal for the game to claim a 110-point win, 17.20 (122) to 1.6 (12). There were few winners across the ground for the Panthers, but Reece Twyford and Jack McGuiness battled manfully.

Devon Meadows slumped to 2-5 on the season as they were unable to overcome a slow start against Red Hill.

Having kicked just one goal in the first half, the Panthers trailed by 33 points at the main break and whilst they rallied in the second half, it was never going to be enough as Red Hill ran out 45-point winners, 10.19 (79) to 5.4 (34).

dominant third quarter put the result beyond doubt.

The third quarter saw Lyndhurst pile on seven goals to one as Jeremy Jakupi (six goals) and Hamish Browning (four goals) took control of the game. The Lightning ran out 66-point winners, 14.13 (97) to 5.1 (31), kicking 12 goals to two after quarter time.

Taking on the Western Jets, Dandenong held their opponents to just one goal for the game and put through nine of their own to record a 9.9 (60) to 1.3 (9) win. Brooke Vernon was best afield for the Rays, while Tyanna Smith booted three majors.

There are wins that will be remembered for a very long time, and on Sunday afternoon the Casey Cavaliers Championship men's Big V team delivered one of those wins.

The McKinnon Cougars went into Round 8 undefeated, but the Cougars are undefeated no more after the two sides played out an instant classic.

Facing McKinnon on its home floor is arguably the toughest task in Big V basketball, but Casey came to play and jumped out of the blocks to hold a 33-25 lead after one quarter of play.

As good teams do, the Cougars responded in the second quarter to trail by just one-point at the main break. The second half was a titanic battle between two great teams.

With 41 seconds left in regulation, Casey's Brent Hobba drained a triple to level things up, 101-101. Neither team could score what would've been a game-winning bucket the rest of the way and the intense shoot-out headed to overtime.

Brandon Polk stepped to the free throw line with 15 seconds remaining and calmly drained both shots to level the scores, 113-113. The Cavs played tight defence for the final 15 seconds, forcing the Cougars into a tough triple which missed.

The game headed to double overtime.

With the scores level at 123-123, the Cavs had a chance to go for the win and win they did! Mitch Chapman drained the game-winning jump shot with seconds remaining to cap off a truly remarkable game, one that highlighted the very real threat that Casey is this year.

Unfortunately for the Cavs, though, the Championship women fell to Keilor earlier on Saturday night. The Cavs' offence spluttered all game as Sarah Halejian (24 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals) played a lone hand.

The Thunder poured in 50 points in the paint to come away with a 95-67 win. The loss sees Casey fall to 4-4 on the season to sit sixth.

The Youth League 1 women kicked off the 'Ballin' for Breast Cancer' event on Saturday night and scored a comprehensive win over Geelong, 85-51.

As has been the trademark for this team for some time now, their defence powered them to victory as they forced the Supercats into 23 turnovers with 19 steals.

Steph Leclerc (9 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 4 points) and Lauren Tuplin (11 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds) were busy, while Peta Rhodes' fine season continued with 17 points and 5 rebounds.

The Cavs solidified their place in the top four with a 7-2 record.

On Sunday in Geelong, the Youth League 1 men fell to the Supercats after going just 3/30 on three-point shots. Blake Taylor (24 points and 9 rebounds) did all he could to keep Casey in the contest, but it wasn't enough as they fell 76-69.

Casey sits fourth on the ladder with an 8-3 record.

All teams hit the road in Round 9. The Championship women and Youth League 1 women are in action on Saturday night, taking on Southern Peninsula and Craigieburn, respectively.

On Sunday, the Championship men face Blackburn and the Youth League 1 men take on Altona.

Outer East ready to rumble

From taking each other on to playing as one - it's an important weekend for AFL Outer East. 180980 “Anywhere between six and 10 (Yarra Valley players will play) - it depends on what happens between now and Thursday,” he said.

“We don’t bat as deep in terms of the SEFNL clubs with our talent out here, and had they all been available, it could have been a 50-50 split, but injury and unavailability means it won’t go that way.”

With the unique dimensions of QEO set to test the Outer East, Rutley warned that his squad has what it takes to play a brand of football that will stack up.

“There’s a lot of us that have had experience at QEO, whether it’s playing or coaching there, I’ve done both - our assistant coaches, guys that have played VFL or TAC Cup footy have played there,” he said.

“It’s a different footy ground, it’s very narrow - it’s not your normal sized ground in terms of shape, so we’ll be looking to do what I assume Bendigo will do, and that’s play fast footy, and defensively we’ve got a good balance of inside and outside players, so we’ve got a good range of players.

“We’ll look to play fast, we won’t have a gorilla type forward - we’ll be more ground ball with the likes of (Ryan) Jones, (Harry) Money, (Jake) Roe-Duggan, Kirk Dickson, Lachie Taylor, Matty Clarke, the more hybrid type players.

“On the day and when you’re coaching, and in the moment you need to make some moves, or there’s an injury, you’ve got room to move with those types of players.”

Rutley also heaped praise on his band of assistant coaches, Matt Adolf, Michael McGrath, Steve O’Brien and Chris Goodlett, saying they’ve done tremendous work in getting the

OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREVIEW - SENIOR INTERLEAGUE No matter which way Saturday’s Interleague result goes, it’s another important day for the growth of AFL Outer East.

The new competition - a merger between Yarra Ranges and South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) - will play together as one, wearing the same jumper with pride when they stride to their positions at QEO in Bendigo.

Outer East will take on the might of the Bendigo Football Netball League at 2.15pm with what looms as a monster senior clash in the AFL Victoria Community Championships, with the Under 18s at 12.00pm also set to put on a show.

But, it was only a year ago that the SEFNL and Yarra Ranges faced off on this very same fixture, with the south-east side, coached by Rhys Nisbet, getting the chocolates in a cracking contest over four-quarters.

At that stage of the year, with work going on behind the scenes to bring the leagues together, it was a vitally important day for all involved in local footy. Saturday will be no different.

With plenty of water left under the bridge as to exactly how the side will look with some recent injury troubles for the Outer East causing some headaches - as well as some stars opting for a rest - coach Nick Rutley told the Star News that depth is no issue for his squad as they prepare to hit the road this weekend.

“The enthusiasm is great, and the attitude towards interleague has been really good you’ve got a range of talented players that don’t want to be playing interleague, and that’s absolutely fine, they’ll get a week off, and others have been hit by injury and that’s unfortunate,” he said.

“We’re really lucky as a league that Outer East is two parts, SEFNL and Yarra Valley.

“The depth of talent is really good. We look at the board, and we go ‘there’s probably a dozen more A-graders that you could slot in who won’t play’, but the reality is, you just go to the next player, who’s not equally as talented, but still talented and on a VFL-list who wants to play.

“The 24 still shapes up to be a really good squad - we’re still going to be in the laps of the god a little bit until Thursday as to what the 24 looks like, but I’m confident we’re going to take a really good list up there, and I think we’ll do well up there.”

The Outer East initially named a four-man leadership group consisting of Berwick star Madi Andrews, Cranbourne defender Brandon Osborne, Olinda Ferny Creek’s Marcus Hottes and Woori Yallock’s Jordan Williams, but have been cruelled by injury over the weekend to both Andrews and Williams, who will not take part.

“Madi is out with injury, and that does make it a little bit difficult, but the reality is we chose four but I think we’ll go to Bendigo with just the two, so hopefully they don’t get stung by a hornets nest between now and then,” Rutley said with a chuckle.

“We’re still blessed with leadership, and having four was a great little initiative, but the injuries, it’s just worked out that we’ll have two, which is more than enough anyway.

“We’ve got a representation from both sides, the Yarra Valley and SEFNL, and they’re highly regarded people - Marcus Hottes is an exceptional bloke, and all the people I’ve spoken to about Brandon say that too.”

While Rutley said that the final squad is still a ways off from being finalised ahead of Thursday’s jumper presentation at Beaconsfield, he said that there will still be plenty of Yarra Valley representation on-field.

Within Gunnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s firing line

In a match that flipped on its head so frequently after half-time it was impossible to know who would walk away with the fourpoints, it came down to one moment, from one man in the dying minutes to seal a result.

Berwick forward Tim Gunn stepped up to the plate, wheeled onto his left boot and snapped the Wickers to victory by a whisker, only moments after Beaconsfield had snatched the lead with a Matthew Johnson major in a classic 'Battle of the Creek' clash at Holm Park on Saturday, 7.8 (50) to 6.12 (48).

Although Gunn's clutch-moment - in a career where he is getting known for producing big moments when they are needed - was a culmination of two hours of intense pressure and the force of the vocal crowd, it was an almighty slug for the most part, but nonetheless engrossing viewing.

Both sides really tested each other out in the early parts of the opening term, and it wasn't until classy forward Harry Money juggled a mark and converted that the Wickers were able to truly get their game up and running.

Moments later, the returning premiership star James Magner soccered through a goal from the middle of the pack out of nothing, and suddenly they were controlling the match, and showcasing their elite skills, particularly through the likes of Ash Smith and Luke Jellyman-Turner, who were racking up mountains of the footy without Travis Tuck there in the middle.

While the Eagles went into the quarter time break without a goal next to their name, they did plenty of things right. When they were able to control the footy, and then find a hole to surge forward quickly, they looked dangerous, with midfielder Riley Verbi particularly dangerous on a wing with his classy ball use.

And although it was, at times, a tough game to watch in the second quarter with only Matthew Johnson adding a major for the Eagles, it set-up a fascinating second-half, with the home side really stepping up their game and looking to play more free-flowing footy.

Gunn broke the sluggishness with a classy snap early in the third quarter, before a James McLean major and a questionable free kick resulting in a goal to Harry Money (two goals) within a matter of moments suddenly saw the Wickers surge out to a game-high 21-points midway through the third.

With champion big-man Scott Meyer spending all day up forward and emerging ruckman Riley Welsh taking on the duties superbly, the home side began their fightback, with Meyer dribbling two goals on the eve of three-quarter-time to get them to within eightpoints.

Every disposal, tackle, mark and shot on goal was met with an inevitable shriek from the crowd in a riveting final 30 minutes.

A horror turnover out of the back-half saw Kyle O'Sullivan nail a set-shot and the first of the final term to the Eagles, and with Verbi racking up stacks of the ball, and Jake Bowd considerably lifting his standard off half-back, the home side appeared to be running on top.

Behinds were scored as both teams looked for the game-breaking goal, and it was Matthew Johnson (three goals) who found just an inkling of space within minutes left on the clock, putting the home side in front for the first time of the day with a set-shot that sailed through the middle.

With the prospect of a shock loss on the horizon for the Wickers, the champion team that has dominated the local region for two straight years came to the fore.

Sensing the moment, James Magner sharked the centre bounce, handing off to Ash Smith who had a running Madi Andrews to his left, who then drove the ball into attack.

Smith once again used all of his class to find another clearance, driving the ball deep into attack where a fumble from the Eagles saw the ball land into the hands of Gunn, who nailed the match-winning shot under immense pressure, putting them back in front.

The Wickers were then able to soak up the remaining few minutes to ice a brilliant victory in a rivalry that certainly has another chapter 38 STAR NEWS

Beaconsfield and Berwick played out a classic 'Battle of the Creek' on Saturday. 193293 to tell this year.

In a cracking contest, Eagle Riley Verbi was arguably best afield in a losing cause, while Jellyman-Turner and the match-winner Tim Gunn (three goals) were absolutely brilliant.

In other matches across the Premier Division, and after a second-straight drubbing, there are now genuine danger signs for Wandin if they can't find a way to be competitive in the south-east.

The challenges for the Yarra Valley clubs venturing down to the wide expanses of the south-east in the inaugural season of AFL Outer East was always going to be interesting.

After Beaconsfield torched the Dogs by 110-points in a three-goal team performance at Holm Park, Nick Adam's group were simply blown away by Cranbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday, 25.14 (164) to 3.11 (29).

In Saturday's clash, the Dogs actually kicked two opening term goals to just trail by fourpoints at quarter time, but the Eagles' speed, dare and ball-movement proved irresistible, booting 22 goals to one in the final three terms, with 9.7 to 0.1 coming in the final term alone.

On yet another dirty day for the Dogs, Anthony Vella (five goals), Shaun Marusic (four goals), Mitch Tharle (four goals) were all dominant forward of centre, while Jordan Bertrand, Stuart Morrish and Glenn Osborne were in complete control across half-back.

Narre Warren 21.14 (140), meanwhile, were too good for a much-improved Healesville 7.8 (50) away from home.

With the Magpies missing some big names, including that of Michael Collins and Aaron Wilson, Matt Shinners' group found plenty of avenues to goal, with 10 individual goal kickers, including a five-goal display from Peter Gentile.

Skipper Dylan Quirk and Nathan Foote continued their blistering 2019 campaigns with another dominant display in the win, while Jake Roe-Duggan was the best for the Bloods.

In the final match of the round, Woori Yallock held off Olinda Ferny Creek to move to an impressive 3-0, 11.8 (74) to 6.9 (45 In Division 1, Officer - after three false starts in the opening stages of the AFL Outer East season - finally broke through for their first win of the season, dismantling Warburton Millgrove after quarter time, 16.17 (113) to 6.10 (46) in a successful trip to Mac Sparke Oval.

As one of the most hyped sides in the new competition, the Kangaroos - who for the most part have struggled for the spark that saw them break their finals drought in 2018 - urgently

needed to, whether it was by one-point or the eventual 67, come away with the four-points to help steer them back on course.

In what is arguably the smallest ground in the competition, the Kangaroos found plenty of space, and despite some errant kicking in front of goal, held an eight-point quarter time lead.

It took until the second-term for the Kangaroos to assert their dominance over the Burras, increasing their eight-point quarter time lead to 34 at half-time after an unanswered fourgoal quarter.

And finally, the Kangaroos were able to break the shackles and play the football that all from the outside knew they were capable of, kicking 10 goals to six in the second-half to gain their first points of the season.

It was a mixture of the new and the old with Ben Tivendale, Matthew Clarke, Tyler Clark and Jesse Longmuir all standing up, whilse new recruits Brent Moloney (four goals), Dave Reilly and Ben Kerrigan demonstrated why the Roos were so keen to bring them in during the off season.

Pleased to see the Kangaroos on the board for the first time in 2019, coach Doug Koop told the News it was an encouraging performance.

"It's always good to be back on the winners list," he said.

"The weekend was important for the players and their confidence to remind them that they are better footballers than their performances so far this season have demonstrated."

Despite returning to something near their very best football, Koop hopes the Kangaroos can continue to build after the interleague break.

"We had 22 contributors this week, we took risks and played to our strengths, however we still have plenty of work to do if we expect to be competitive this year," he said.

"One win doesn't define a team, so we'll get back to work this week and work off a few of the rough edges in our game."

Pakenham, meanwhile, maintained its utterly perfect start to the season, moving 4-0 after a hard-fought win over Mount Evelyn at Toomuc Reserve, 10.10 (70) to 5.12 (42).

Ash Green's in-form side maintained control over the contest despite no team scoring a goal in the opening term, with the Lions opening up the game with a four-goal secondquarter.

In the remaining matches, a wayward Doveton overcame a slow start to return to the winners list with a strong effort against Belgrave at home, 9.20 (74) to 8.10 (58).

The Doves failed to register a major in the first-term, but slowly kicked into gear despite narrowly trailing at half time and three-quarter-time.

But inspired a five-goal haul to Mitch Pierce, and equally important performances from Will Smith, Matthew Boyd and defender Daniel Zajac, the Doves kicked away in the final term to snare a vital four-points, leaving them in third spot.

Monbulk, meanwhile, remains undefeated after dominating Emerald, 13.19 (97) to 6.12 (48) away from home.
