Paediatric boost for Casey Hospital Casey Hospital’s Paediatric Emergency Centre project will develop emergency department facilities that are appropriate for families and children, leading to better clinical outcomes.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the Health Hub and Paediatric Centre would support doctors, nurses and the brightest researchers to treat patients and help find new breakthrough cures.

“This plan builds on the more than 55 per cent increase in Commonwealth funding to Victorian hospitals, record bulk billing and more than 2,000 new medicines subsided under the PBS,” said Health Minister Greg Hunt.

“Funding for Casey Hospital will greatly improve health outcomes for local families,” added Mr Wood.

“Providing a dedicated emergency department for children will enable the emotional needs of sick and injured children to be met and ensures they are protected from the stressful situations that occur in emergency departments.

“This investment will improve the emer-

gency department experience of children and their families, improve waiting times and ensure that children receive high quality care in the right place at the right time.”

The funding comes as part of the Liberal National Government’s $496 million dollar investment to make Victoria a global leading centre for health, medical research and innovative cancer treatments.

“This investment will be life-changing for so many of our sickest Australians, including many children battling cancer,” Mr Wood said.

“Today’s Health and Medical Research Plan cements Melbourne’s place as a global leader in health and medical research, creating jobs while importantly providing support for Australians patients.”

The Liberal National Government is committed to improve the health of all Victorians and this range of health and medical research centres throughout the state will give our medical staff the tools they need to save lives and protect lives.

More university places a boon for La Trobe La Trobe MP Jason Wood said Morrison Government funding to increase the number of students at Federation University Australia would be a major boost for local students and the local economy.

Mr Wood said the Morrison Government was providing an additional $40.7 million over four years to increase the number of bachelor students at Federation University Australia’s Berwick campus.

The university will receive funding for an additional 758 bachelor places in 2019, increasing to 1,000 places from 2020 ongoing.

“This is a great opportunity for Federation University to grow and expand its educational services, which is great news for students, families and businesses in La Trobe ,” Mr Wood said.

“By offering more higher education opportunities locally we can retain our smart young people and also attract more students to the region to study.

Four billion to bust road congestion Thousands of cars will come off Australian roads, and people will be getting home sooner and safer under a $4 billion plan to further bust congestion across the country.

The four-fold boost to the Urban Congestion Fund will impact the lives of commuters across Australia with the money aimed at eliminating traffic headaches.

Visiting Berwick earlier this year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said $500 million would go towards getting people off the roads and onto trains.

The Commuter Car Park Fund will enable the building of an estimated 50 park and ride facilities at train stations – meaning up to 25,000 cars will come off the roads.

Mr Morrison said the investment was about getting people home sooner and safer.

“I want them to spend less time in traffic and more time doing what’s important to them,” he said.

“Our investment in congestion busting

infrastructure means parents spend more time with their kids, tradies can spend more time on site and less time in traffic.”

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said an extra $3 billion had been budgeted for the Urban Congestion Fund, bringing to $4 billion the available funding to target local pinch points, congested motorways and build critical commuter parking infrastructure nationwide.

“With the initial $1 billion tranche of congestion-busting funding allocated to critical projects across South East Queensland, urban New South Wales, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth, the Government is stepping up its commitment to tackle the congestion choking our cities,” Mr Frydenberg said.

“This massive investment will operate in tandem with our recently announced population plan, which will assist in easing the growing pains in our biggest cities while driving the development and prosperity of

“People will see a tangible effect when these park and ride facilities are in operation with less cars on the roads,” Mr Wood said.

The sound of bagpipes rang through the morning air as children, war veterans, residents, and dignitaries paid their respects at the cenotaph.

Police are investigating an alleged robbery of a 14-year-old girl who had left the party and was attacked just before midnight, a Victoria police spokeswoman said.

A number of witnesses ran to her aid when they saw a female assault the victim and steal her phone, police say.

Police said the victim was taken inside the venue and was not injured.

The female is perceived to be a youth of African appearance.

A teenager has spoken of the moment he was repeatedly punched and had his head “stomped on“ by gatecrashers at a 16th birthday party in Berwick.

Matthew, 19, suffered bruising and swelling to his face after being approached by the thugs at the front of the Old Cheese Factory on Homestead Road on Friday night, 26 April.

Witnesses at the fancy dress party told Matthew he was “dragged across the ground” where the thugs allegedly pinched his Nike sneakers worth $250.

Matthew said he was looking for a friend when “one Sudanese boy came up to me, put

out his arm around me and he’s like ‘have you got the time?’

“I had just checked my phone...I said it’s 11.30. He’s like ‘get your phone out, and show me.’ I said to him ‘I don’t have my phone on me.’ I knew he was going to steal it.

“More of them came over and started to surround me,” he explained.

“From there, I don’t really remember too much....At some point I came back into consciousness and I was struggling to get back to my feet.”

Mathew, who asked his surname not to be identified, said he went to the restrooms to clean his bloodied face with help of partygoers.

with Rebecca Henderson from the Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad at Casey ARC, Narre Warren

How long have you been in the Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad and what got you interested in the sport?

I've been at CCTS since I started triathlon about 4 years ago. Since I was young I've always done swimming and athletics, including cross country which is already two thirds of a triathlon. I started swimming with the CCTS to get some extra swimming in and then decided to give some time trials a go to get into the Victorian triathlon team. These time trials were only off swim and run ability, so I got in and then I had to learn pretty much how to ride a bike from the beginning. I really liked the idea of triathlon though because it seemed so fun getting to do three sports at once, which is unique as it's the only sport that does this.

How many hours a week would you train?

I probably train about 20 hours per week. This includes about 5 swim sessions, 4 bike sessions and 2-3 run sessions.

What's your favourite book?

My favourite book series is the Hunger Games Trilogy. It's been my favourite for probably about 5 years now.

At school I....

I'm currently in year 12 completing VCE. Last year I did Further Maths and P.E. as year 12 subjects with study scores of 47 and 40 respectively. This year I'm taking English, Maths Methods, Chemistry and Accounting.

Is it true you were a race walker?

Yes, I started race walking when I was about 8 or 9 at little athletics. The first time I ever did it I won the race, which surprised even my parents because the best I had done in any athletic event before that was 8th in shot put. Last year I went to the World Racewalking Cup in Taicang, China and raced in the u/20 10km race, where I finished 16th which was an amazing experience.

I've done multiple 10km and 5km races in the ocean which are extremely fun. The 10km takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to complete.

What's the best thing about living in the City of Casey?

The best thing about living in the City Of Casey is there are so many facilities available to the public in such a small area. For example, the pools, Lysterfield Lake, clip and climb Bunjil place and P3 sports recovery. There are enough places to cater for every one of all ages.

Which six dinner guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

The three Norwegian triathletes, Kristian Blummenfelt, Gustav Iden and Casper Stornes, J.K.Rowling, Albert Einstein and Ulrikke Falch.

What event, past, present, or future, would you like to witness?

The first moon landing.

What was your best concert or who would you like to see?

I went and saw One Direction a couple of years ago which was a really good concert.

Illegal brothels ‘rife’

By Brendan Rees Illegal brothels are "plaguing" Casey, putting people at risk of disease, and threatening the wellbeing and safety of women - with the issue only being "handballed," says an Adult Entertainment Industry spokesman.

It comes as Casey Council confirmed it had received four complaints of illegal brothels in the past three months, all of which were referred to Victoria Police.

The Australian Adult Entertainment Industry (AAEI) says police "need to get serious" about curbing the illegal industry.

"Illegal brothel activity is now so rife, it is completely out of control and the blame lays at the feet of Victoria Police," AAEI spokesman William Albon said.

Mr Albon - whose group is the owners of legal brothels and escort agencies - said at least four illegal brothels were operating in Narre Warren and Hampton Park with one close to a

kindergarten and church.

"Until such time as the police prosecute an owner operator of an illegal brothel, get a penalty including incarceration and hefty fine and asset confiscation - will you have a message of deterrence," he said.

According to Mr Albon, police have "handballed" the problem of illegal brothels, allegedly arguing it was an offence against planning law and "so councils had to act."

"Councils were active. But their action could only be brought against the owner of the land, who was rarely if ever, the operator of the illegal brothel."

He said the amendment to the Sex Work Act made the police the sole agency that could bring a prosecution before a court - which has seen the establishment of the Victoria Police Sex Industry Coordination Unit.

Casey Council statutory planning and building services manager Duncan Turner said: "Council do not investigate these matters

as the legislation requires police to undertake investigations into such reports."

Mr Albon said his group visited one of the alleged illegal brothels on a Saturday last December where a man posed as a customer.

"We learned how many women were working at the business," he said. "We were told we could discuss services with the women in the room."

In a statement, a Victoria Police said police targeted suspected illegal brothels based on an assessment of intelligence received.

"For operational reasons, we will not provide commentary around the specific areas or establishments we are investigating," it said.

"There is nothing to indicate that one area has any more illegal brothels than any one area.

"Police take all allegations of illegal sex work seriously and encourage anyone who suspects they know of an illegal brothel to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

Fresh faced and ready for business

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has unveiled plans to refurbish the dilapidated Webb Street shopping precinct in Narre Warren.

Council officers have visited every business about a shopfront improvement program which aims to enhance the attractiveness of Narre Warren Village.

Better signage, well presented window displays, shopfront upgrades, and assisting businesses to develop a "strong clear identity" has been proposed.

Rahmatullah Gangi, store owner of A.R Afghan Supermarket and Halal butcher on Webb Street, supported the revitalisation program but said the "biggest issue" was traffic banking up at the level crossing.

"When it is peak hour it's crazy," he said.

"That's affected business."

Mr Gangi added the footpaths were "not too bad but it's a little bit old and dirty."

Ali Sari, manager Narre Warren Mixed Deli, said the upgrades was a "good idea," but echoed Mr Gangi's frustrations, saying more car parking was needed as well as improved street lighting.

"We've got 25 to 30 car parks. Most of the time people just park their car here and jump on the train," he said.

Australian Sports Nutrition manager Matt Hagan said "everything looks pretty old" on Webb Street, adding street lighting was a concern.

"There's a couple of dark spots; probably wouldn't make people feel safe," he said.

A council document said all business owners in Webb Street were prepared to work with council.

Gunman on the run A gunman is at large after police allege a man was shot in in Hampton Park on Tuesday 30 April.

Police and Emergency services were called to Fulham Close about 9.30am after reports a man had sustained a gunshot wound.

"It is understood the man was located at the premises with a gunshot injury to the lower body," Victoria Police spokeswoman Alex Day said.

The 30-year-old man from Hampton Park was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police have established a crime scene at the location and are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad believe this is a targeted incident.

La Trobe MP Jason Wood this week pledged to provide 500 car park spaces at Narre Warren train station if re-elected at the May 18 Federal Election.

Voters have their work cut out for them in the May Federal election, with the ballot lists looking full across the Holt, La Trobe and Bruce.

In Holt, three candidates are competing against Labor's Anthony Byrne for the seat he currently holds, including Jessica Wheelock for The Greens (VIC), Jatinder Singh for the United Australia Party, and Jennifer Van Den Broek for the Liberal Party..

Seven candidates are vying for the House of Representatives in La Trobe, including incumbent Jason Wood of the Liberal Party. He's facing a strong challenge from Simon Curtis of the Labor Party, with both candidates announcing funding for various community issues. Also running in La Trobe is Amy Gregorovich, whom eagle-eyed residents might remember previously ran as a candidate in last year's state election for the seat of Gembrook. The tradition lives on

By Danielle Kutchel Delene Emanuel is justifiably proud of her family’s history.

On Anzac Day at the Berwick High Street memorial, she sat a few rows from the front wearing a picture of her father, Cliff Harry Emanuel - known as ‘The Admiral’ among his RSL mates.

Mr Emanuel served in the navy for six years, having been called up before World War II. He continued a tradition of sorts: his own father was one of the first 500 to make up the Australian Navy, Ms Emanuel explained. Her mother also served “in her own way”, helping to build the first Lancaster bomber.

Ms Emanuel now wears her father’s image each Anzac Day to remind people of the human faces behind the stories and legends.

“I like to think that little kids look at it and recognise that it was a person, and if kids look at me I do tell them ‘this was my father and he was in the navy’. And I like to see that parents are bringing their kids along and the Anzac spirit lives on,” she said.

Children were among those who marched down High Street in its Anzac Day parade, and also in the crowds that packed the village to applaud the veterans and their families in the parade.

As the service got underway, voices swelled in unison the sing the hymn Abide With Me. Speeches noted that it’s going to be a big year for the Berwick RSL Sub-Branch, which will celebrate its centenary later this year. September also marks 80 years since the beginning of World War II. In an inspiring guest speech, Lieutenant Colonel David Hughes urged those gathered to embody the values of the Anzac spirit and use it to improve themselves - whether through volunteering or helping people in some other way. Swelled with emotion About a 2000-strong crowd braved an early morning chill in Narre Warren to pay tribute to the servicemen and women of Australia.

Clad in winter woolies, beanies, and jackets, the Anzac Dawn Service saw residents; war veterans, politicians, and students gather around the cenotaph at Bunjil Place on Thursday 25 April.

Children sat at the front crossed-legged while others stood in quiet reflection as the sound of bagpipes rung out into the morning air.

Addressing the crowd, Berwick RSL subbranch secretary Chris McKenna said 2019 marked two significant milestones - the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II and the centenary of the establishment of the Berwick sub-branch.

Reverend Elywn Sparks led the crowd in prayer before Berwick RSL sub-branch president Wayne A'Vard gave the Anzac address, paying tribute to fallen soldiers.

"In 1916 when the RSL was formed by those women and men who returned it was our camaraderie, mateship, and looking after one another, extending a hand of friendship, this is the essence of what many call the Anzac spirit," he said.

Local community groups, politicians, and school children along with members of the public were invited to lay wreaths, taking a moment to reflect as birds screeched in nearby trees.

The service continued with The Last Post, played by Greg Marks and his granddaughter Scarlett Marks-Boutton, both of Berwick.

Opera singer Rejieli Paulo sang a rendition of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems.

Bill Isaacson, a member of the National Serviceman's Association Outer Eastern and Yarra Valley sub-branch, said he was proud to honour his family's history.

Mr Isaacson served in the Citizen Military Forces in the 1950s while his father, four uncles and aunty all served in World War II. "What was interesting the four brothers that served overseas they all came back and survived and didn't have any injuries; didn't get shot," he said.

"I feel very privileged to have had a family that served overseas and survived, and I'm very proud of our history."

About 35 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Narre Warren, Rotary Club of Berwick, Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club, SES Narre Warren, and the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren assisted in the service and provided a breakfast.

City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she was impressed with crowd numbers: "I think every year more and more of our young people are attending which I find really encouraging because they are the ones that are going to carry on the tradition and keep sacred something that is so important to Australia."

Traffic bottlenecks to go

By Brendan Rees The Federal Government has announced a $50 million funding package to upgrade two congestion hotspots in Berwick.

Casey Council has long pushed for the project which will see a $40 million upgrade to the Clyde Road intersection along the Monash Freeway.

Included in the work will be the addition of a dedicated cycling lane over the Monash Freeway.

This will be complemented by an additional $10 million upgrade to the Clyde Road intersection at Kangan Drive, to improve safety and reduce congestion for the thousands of travellers who pass through the intersection daily.

During the announcement on Wednesday 24 April, La Trobe MP Jason Wood said Clyde Road was used by tens of thousands of vehicle a day - with that number predicted to grow.

"We need this investment in order to make sure people can get the most out of each and every day," he said.

"The other point is when you look at the issues at the hospital and people going to see sick ones - it just adds to that stress."

Under the proposal, a new lane will be added in each direction on Clyde Road as well as a right hand turning lane on Kangan Drive.

Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the funding had been "locked into the budget."

"As soon as the work is planned in detail we are ready to go," he said. "Of course, a future Labor Government could if they chose, overturn that."

Joining Mr Wood at the announcement was City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon who said it was a real win for the community.

Sikh Games draw crowds The Australian Sikh Games held over the Easter Long Weekend in Casey has delivered the largest attendance and participation in the 32year history of the event.

Event management and Victoria Police estimated about 200,000 people attended over the three days from 19 to 21 April at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East.

The Games have become a staple sporting and cultural event for the Australian Sikh community which is held in every year in capital cities around Australia.

The event included traditional Indian and Australian sports along with cultural performances, music and dance, art displays learning seminars and traditional Indian food served as part of "langar" or community kitchen which is provided free to all attendees.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Mass said he was delighted to take part in the international event that hosted more than 4,000 athletes from Australia and overseas including New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and India.

Mr Mass was joined by Premier Daniel Andrews, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale.

"The Sikh Games provided our local community with a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate diversity through sport and to display our area's ability to host major international events," Mr Maas said.

The State Government contributed $200,000 to the event to support its celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.

A 12-year-old Lysterfield South girl who has led a campaign to protect wildlife on roads is over the moon after the community raised thousands of dollars in a fundraiser.

An Easter raffle held at the Churchill Park Estate playground on Sunday 14 April saw more than 60 residents give generously, raising $2,908.

Shannon Tobin-Underwood, who organised a petition earlier this year to reduce the speed limit on Churchill Park Drive to prevent animals from being hit by cars, said all money raised would be donated to Sue Johnston and

Paul Jones, both of Lysterfield South "who work tirelessly rescuing and caring for the many injured and orphaned kangaroos in our area."

"It is organised and run by a local resident, Lisa Ross," Shannon said. "From the generous donations of chocolate eggs and rabbits, soft toys, games and vouchers, Lisa made up over 60 hamper prizes."

A watercolour painting of a kangaroo by local artist Michelle Potter was also auctioned off.

Councillor Rosalie Crestani also attended and assisted with the raffle draw, "even donating back the prize she won."

Honouring our ANZACs

By Danielle Kutchel They gathered in their hundreds, young and old, shielded from the cold in beanies, scarves and thick coats, with medals and poppies pinned proudly to their chests.

They strode together, mostly in silence, some murmuring early morning greetings as they reached the Officer Memorial Gates and took up their positions - all eager to pay their respects on this chilly ANZAC Day morning.

A persistent breeze nipped at the Victorian, Australian and New Zealand flags as they were lowered to half mast, and then the service began.

MC'd by Rob Porter of the Officer and District Community Association, the event at-

tracted an even bigger crowd than last year, and was supported by sporting clubs, scout groups, community associations and schools from around the area.

Over in Pakenham, it was a similar story as several hundred from Pakenham and surrounds paid tribute at the Pakenham War Memorial.

"It is heartening to see the number of people here attending this dawn service. Especially the younger generations," Pakenham RSL president Brad McCann told the crowd.

"We gather to honour the memory of those men and women who paid with their lives as a result of wounds received while many returned to their families damaged in body, mind and spirit."

Jewellery, tools stolen

Shaken by stab threat

By Brendan Rees A mother has told that her teenage son has been left petrified after a gang allegedly threatened to stab him at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.

The 14-year-old was in the food court with friends when they were approached by a group of young thugs about 4.30pm on Thursday 11 April.

According to the teen's mother, who asked not to be named, one of the thug's allegedly put their arm around the victims saying 'come on mate give us your money.'

"They came up making out like they're all mates and so it looks good for the camera," she said.

The thugs told the victims if they didn't give him the jacket and the money "they would be stabbed and bashed," she added.

"No one stopped to help them."

After the teens were robbed, security was called and retrieved the victim's jacket and some of the money, the mother said.

"The security didn't ring the police which they denied.

"Security walked them upstairs and let them go without ringing a parent or making sure there was someone to pick them up.

I had to wait in the car park till I could get there," she said.

The mother said she spoke to security and recorded a video on her phone, and was furious with how security handled the matter.

"I played it back later and the first security guard says 'didn't get a chance to call police.'

"The next big boss said 'oh they should've rung (police), I'm going to look into it,' then he said 'yeah they did ring them.'

"The police told us they didn't," she said.

"I don't care about the money - just over a $100 between the four kids they robbed. I don't care if it was $100 or a $1000. I can replace that; I can't replace my kid."

She said her son was too scared to go back to the centre.

Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit is investigating.

A South East woman has expressed her shock after three cars were broken into at the front of her property.

Athena Stratton said bandits allegedly made off with thousands of dollars in jewellery and power tools from the cars that were all parked in Donnelly Court, Cranbourne.

She said her Renault work van and Toyota Hilux ute, as well as her sister's Nissan X-Trail were all targeted in the alleged theft about midnight on Tuesday 30 May. Jewellery, worth about $2000 and a jacket was taken from her sister's car, while power tools worth about $2000 were taken from her work van, she said.

Ms Stratton said her sister found her glove box open and jacket missing on Monday night, 29 April.

"She's gone around the other side, kept looking for her jacket and realised," she said.

"She's doing her work placement, and had to take off all of her rings and she put them in the vehicle and forgotten that she put them there.

"I found the jacket in the morning," she

added. "It was actually hanging over the wood railing through the walkway," which was close to where the break in occurred.

Ms Stratton said the bandits also took her sister's purse, containing various cards.

She checked with the Caltex Woolworths petrol station on South Gippsland Highway and confirmed with staff her sister's MasterCard had been used to buy $91.00 in items but was declined.

"He's gone back at 6am this morning (Tuesday 30 May) and tried to use the card again."

She said staff at the service station kept the card which was handed to police.

"The police couldn't get any fingerprints (from the cars), but they've got the footage from the petrol station," she added.

"I don't know how they've got in it, it's impossible that every single one of us left our door's unlocked," Ms Stratton said.

"Don't know how they got in the vehicles without the alarms going off in the vehicle.

"Just have to be a bit more vigilant," she said.

Set to take on world stage

By Brendan Rees Twenty cheerleaders from across the South East are doing back flips of joy after being selected to take on the world.

Two teams from the Royal All Stars Cheerleading Academy in Narre Warren have been training hard in preparation for the 2019 Global Dance and Cheer Games which will be hosted in Honolulu, Hawaii from 17-20 May. The academy's director and head coach Susan Cheo said the girls were thrilled to make the cut.

"Words can't express how proud I am of our athletes at the Royal All Stars and Dance Academy," she said.

"As a former Canadian cheerleader, I grew up in another country where the sport of cheerleading is so much more recognised.

"I first started the cheer academy without any expectations and can't believe how far we have come."

The Royal Duchesses level 1 cheerleading squad ranges from 10 to 15 years-of-age while the Royal Tiaras level 3 open team are aged 14 to 26 years.

They will be up against some tough teams around the world including America, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, New Zealand and more.

"The judges will be looking at technique, skill level and choreography just to name a few," Ms Cheo said.

"We have some athletes that are now training over 12 hours a week because they are extremely hard workers, dedicated and absolutely love the growing sport," she said."

The four-day event comprises of an opening ceremony, parade of nations, cultural exchange, a two-day competition, closing ceremony, cultural celebration luau and more.

The two teams were also invited by Casey Council to perform at Bunjil Place for the Innovation Summit on Sunday 28 April.

Twenty athletes from Casey are off to Hawaii to compete in a cheerleading and dance championship.

Law program an easy goal

By Brendan Rees A new program which will help young people in Casey learn about the law using sport is sure to kick goals.

The Sporting Change program, with the help of sports stars and sport sessions was launched at Bunjil Place on Monday 30 April and teaches students about police powers, employment law, and relationships and the law - with the help of sports stars and sport sessions.

Springvale-Monash Legal Service executive director Kristen Wallwork said the program, which had been piloted at Narre Warren South P-12 College in 2017, had been a proven winner with engaging young people, and shared many parallels with the law.

"We understand that improving young people's access to justice and engagement with the legal system needs us to proactively reach out to the young person, rather than expect the young person to come to us," she said.

"The sport hooks the student in to be involved and is also used as a way to try to explain legal terms in an enjoyable and approachable way.

"For example, we teach the laws on consent alongside learning mixed martial arts. We draw parallels between the rules regarding contact in mixed martial arts and those rules that exist in society around consent laws."

"To complement the legal education side of Sporting Change, we also provide a school lawyer service. Our lawyer is based at the school once a week and provides free and confidential legal assistance to the young people."

She said given the City of Casey was one of the fastest growth regions in Australia and "likely to become an area with high levels of unmet legal need."

"The City of Casey council then introduced us to Narre Warren South P-12 College as an ideal school to partner with to deliver the program for the first time."

Triathletes arc up

After training at the same time every week for the past 10 years, Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad (CCTS) have been asked to train later in the evenings and members are not happy.

Casey Arc management will be re-allocating the squad’s time slot to 8pm to 9.30pm, instead of 6.30pm to 8pm every Tuesday and Thursday.

The non-for-profit, volunteer run squad provides two times weekly coached sessions for swimming at Casey ARC for both children and adults. They also have sessions for cycling and running.

“Our members pay entry to the facility just like the general public or many are actual Casey ARC members,” CCTS secretary Helen Brennan said.

“We cannot understand their methodology as CCTS have been swimming at these times consistently all year round for more than 10 years. Yet we are being made to change our coached sessions to make way for the members of the public who may or may not turn up.

It just doesn’t make sense on any level or from a business point of view.”

A triathlon is a multi-sport race that combines swimming, cycling, and running in one event and can be completed as an individual event, or a team event. The squad services the Casey and Cardinia areas.

A large majority of the members live in the Berwick, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren areas.

“CCTS is the biggest growing triathlon club in Victoria for the past two years,” Ms Brennan added. “Memberships have grown by more than 38 percent in the past year to 67 active members.

“These numbers will only increase as the squad becomes even more visible in the local and surrounding communities.”

The squad has junior members as young as eight.

“It is not conducive with child safe practices to have children commencing their training at 8pm until 9.30pm at night on a regular basis,” she said. “CCTS are a family friendly squad and have a number of families who train and attend the facility together. We have mothers and fathers who train and compete in the sport together with their children.”

Ms Brennan said the club is “extremely disappointed” and “frustrated” to learn that the YMCA’s alleged strategy and reason for this change is to increase lane availability for the general public.

“Our squad train consistently throughout the entire year, unlike seasonal sports such as football and cricket, yet we are being asked to change to make lanes available for these seasonal sporting groups,” she said.

Casey Arc management recognised the squad’s concerns by saying the demands on the lap lanes have never been greater.

“We are trying to balance the needs of the entire community, as well as the needs of the CCTS,” area manager One Casey Barry Harrison said.

“Our aquatics membership grew by about 20 percent in the last year. That means more people than ever are wanting to swim for their health and fitness. At the same time, our swimming lessons program has also grown and is looking for more space to teach local children about water safety and to develop their swimming skills.”

According to Mr Harrison, every afternoon and evening, more than 850 people swim at Casey Arc. “For 15 years, the CCTS has had free lane access of two lanes twice a week, which has often expanded to three lanes at the expense of other patrons using the pool,” Mr Harrison said.

“Since early February, we have been reaching out to the club president to discuss the need to review when the club runs its training.

“We want everyone to enjoy the facilities at Casey ARC, so our solution was to offer the club continued free lane access at a time when there wasn’t such demand from the rest of the community.”

To compensate the club for the later training time, Casey Arc have increased the number of free lanes allocated to the club from two to four.

The facility has also offered the squad a poolside lane on Tuesday evening to train their junior members from 7pm to 8.30pm. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Mike Newbond, committeeman of the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL echoed his sentiments during a reading of the Anzac Requiem, saying "On this day, above all day, we recall those who served in war and who did not return to receive the grateful thanks of the nation."

Eyes turned to the sky where vintage aircraft performed a flypast tribute before Rever-

ent Ray McCluskey of the Cranbourne Uniting Church led the crowd in prayer.

Local community groups, politicians, school children along with members of the public were invited lay wreaths, taking a moment to reflect.

Guest speaker Cael Lawrence, college captain of Alkira Secondary College told the crowd: "Today we thank them for their service and remember those who died defending our freedom."

Bumper crowds turned out in Cranbourne on Anzac Day to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during times of war.

Community groups, war veterans, dignitaries, and riders of the Vietnam Veterans motorcycle club were cheered on by thousands of spectators who lined High Street to watch the morning parade on Thursday 25 April.

As the sound of bagpipes performed by the Cormac McCarthy Irish Pipe Band rang through the streets, the raw emotion was evident.

Wearing a beret with medals pinned to his jacket, 79-year-old Maurice Quinn of Cranbourne, marched to remember his father and brother who died in World War II. Mr Quinn, who served with the British Army for 25 years before arriving in Australia in 1985, said he was honoured to be a part of the commemoration.

"I'm getting over the flu but I wouldn't miss it," he said. "In my family, there's my father, my brothers, a sister, both my sons, a daughter who all served in the British Army. And I've got a daughter serving now in the Australian Army and has been for 30 years," he added.

Standing by his side was his daughter Karen Quinn, who said she always attended the service with her father. "We always come here together," adding "It's wonderful to see how many people show up more and more every year."

More than 2,000 residents, children, students, war veterans, and dignitaries converged at the Clydesdale Square Cenotaph for a service.

Addressing the crowd, Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch senior vice president Bill Shepherd said: "Some say this day glorifies war, but very veteran will be the first to say that their greatest wish and most fervent prayer is

Group offers jobs, support

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In its first six months, a Community Support Group has quickly become a "trusted place" for Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia's South Sudanese youth.

With the support of Centre for Multicultural Youth, the community-based group aims to engage youths and link them and their families to programs, such as education and employment pathways.

It will succeed because it's run by the community itself, says Deng Kur of the Federation of South Sudanese Community Associations in Victoria, "No one knows the problem better than we do.

"We want to be part of the solution."

Mr Kur is also a member of the Local Reference Group, which will guide the CSG's work.

Since November, about 100 families have received services, such as casework and outreach, from the CSG. Seventeen young people have been guided into jobs.

The group has also offered financial help for school uniforms and books, community events and sports, It has also run homework clubs and school holiday activities.

Young people faced complex issues including alcohol and drug abuse, family violence, dropping out of school, homelessness, and a lack of awareness of mainstream social services, Mr Kur said.

"The solution is to provide services."

At a launch of the CSG office on 18 April, Centre for Multicultural Youth chief executive Carmel Guerra was joined by Youth Minister Gabrielle Williams as well as Local Reference Group and CSG members.

Ms Guerra said the group supports families to become more resilient and thrive in Australia.

It has also been recruiting staff for culturally-appropriate services as well as building links with existing services, schools and sports clubs.

Young people feel isolated while facing the challenges of moving to a new country on top of past traumas, family separation, racism and discrimination, she said.

"There's immense sadness at the misrepresentation of the community by the media.

"Young people are struggling with the discrimination and racism that this brings with it.

There's mistrust and feelings of hurt on either

side of the cultural divide."

Ms Williams said the CSG had quickly become a trusted place for the South Sudanese community to find "support and companionship" and "great services that help them achieve their goals".

"We're helping young people from all backgrounds as they make their journey to adulthood - they all deserve to have access to every opportunity our state can offer, from help with education to jobs."

The recent Victorian election result clearly rejected a political scare campaign against the South Sudanese community, Mr Kur said.

"The Victorian election made it clear that the people support us and the Government support us."

The State Government has provided $5.5 million for three CSGs - in the South East, Melton/Brimbank and Wyndham.

The CMY said it would push for continued funding in the upcoming State Budget.

"We're hoping we are allocated funding for a longer period, say three years, so that the we can continue to build on these strengths and better support the community," Ms Guerra said.

An estimated 10,000 people flooded into PB Ronald Reserve to enjoy a new entertain-

ment format on the main stage, as well as the rebooted market and parade. Mr Yakkerboo's cake was a source of delight for visitors too: designed to look like a stack of classic children's books, it fooled some onlookers into thinking it really was a book display.

President of the Yakkerboo organising committee, Michael Porter, said the event was "hugely successful".

"Our plan is to learn by what we did this year, to make it bigger and better next year," he said.

TEDx stories inspire hope Innovative stories and ideas poised to affect real and positive change were shared at Casey’s inaugural TEDx event on Sunday 28 April.

The event was part of the INNovation Summit held on the same day at Bunjil Place.

Organiser Joanne Law said she hoped the event would “move, delight and inspire“ people to make a difference on a local, national and global scale.

The program started with Youth talks: Ideas from the next generation.

Among the speakers was Chairo Christian College student and young Pakenham business entrepreneur Danyal Diallo.

Last year Grow featured Danyal and his drop shipping gym equipment business, Gymshopen.

For TEDx Casey Danyal spoke from experience about being young, being Sudanese and not wanting to be defined by the negative stereotypes associated with his community.

His message was one about not conforming to stereotypes and “how you shouldn’t let stereotypes define you, or even worse, limit you".

He outlined the four principles he had learnt during his business journey.

“I believe that you can achieve your goals and dreams, all you have to do for it to come to reality is you have to believe that you can!"

Danyal told the audience.

“One of my favourite motivational spears, Evan Carmichael, always says 'believe you can'. Fix your mind on what you want and it’s yours."

He also spoke about the danger of conformity, waiting on others and asking for help.

“Teamwork makes the dream work."

The Main Stage talks in the evening featured a range of speakers, several of them based in the Casey Cardinia Region.

Narre Warren business consultant Lana Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion.

Ms Johnson is a consultant who provides solutions for growing businesses with a focus on strategies, leadership development and culture.

She has worked with over 35 organisations from micro businesses to large multi-nationals across a wide range of industries, from agriculture to manufacturing to professional services.

She has addressed front-line blue collar workers, office staff, supervisors, senior leaders and boards.

In her TEDx address, Ms Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion being the spread of wellbeing ideas, attitudes or behaviours in a group.

“You don’t need me to tell you that how most of us are living and working is stressing us out. It is taking a toll on our wellbeing and it’s causing many preventable chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Mental health conditions are on the rise as well.

“Today, more than 2 in 3 people are suffering and dying from preventable lifestyle diseases. And it is an upwards trend. “ Ms Johnson encouraged the audience to see wellbeing as “contagious“.

“What is gorgeous about wellbeing is that a boost in one aspect of your wellbeing can have an immediate and significant flow on affect to others, “she said.

“Just as stress and negative emotions are contagious, positive emotions are also contagious. Enthusiasm and joy are catchy.

“Exercise is socially contagious. For instance, have you ever noticed that when the people you know exercise more, you exercise more?

“The best example of this that I know is called Parkrun. This story began in 2004 when a small group of friends decided to begin a weekly 5 kilometre timed run in Bushy Park in the UK. After two years that weekly event at Bushy Park was attracting over 350 runners.

People began inviting other people.

“The infection spread from there, like wild fire around the world. Today, over 3.5 million people around the world are running or walking Parkrun.

“You don’t have to start a global movement to make a difference. Jump on a bandwagon that already exists. Imagine, what would our

world be like if we could elevate the wellbeing of humanity, even just a little? “ Also on the bill was executive director of Pitcher Partners and Pakenham local Vicki Macdermid.

In her address, Ms Macdermid explored how as social organisms it is essential to engage in personal face-to-face interactions for our own health and wellbeing and that of society.

Ms Macdermid has developed a unique program where she invites participants to engage with horses to understand trust, respect and being fully present. This approach coupled with experiential learning helps the individuals to develop their own ability to connect, ability to explore empathy and their own self-awareness.

Horses have played a pivotal role in her personal life and have compelled Vicki to share what horses have taught her.

“It is our humanness and ability to adapt that will make the difference to our Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for individuals, teams and organisations, “Ms Macdermid said.

“Horses help us to recognise and build our individual, team and organisational EQ, accelerating the learning process and climbing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

“Adopting leaderful behaviours requires the

ability to recognise what is important to others, the impact we have and how we can invite others to join us to achieve active participation.

This challenges the outdated notion of command and control and requires self-awareness in environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar. In today’s technologically advanced world, and one which will continue to shape the way we live and work, it will be even more crucial for us to connect with each other.

“Engaging with horses demonstrates what real leadership looks (and feels) like. “ Dr Evita March is a senior lecturer and researcher of psychology at Federation University’s Berwick campus.

Her research interests include interpersonal relationships, cyber psychology and personality; specifically, personality traits that predict perpetration of online antisocial behaviours.

Her work on predicting the personality traits and motivations of internet ‘trolls’ was an Australian first study, and she has received both national and international recognition for her research on Cyber Hate.

Dr March is also involved in projects exploring intimate partner cyber-stalking and the propensity for intimate partner violence.

She spoke about understanding traits that predict engaging in online antisocial behaviours being imperative for the development of effective interventions and treatment.

Sweet suburban success

By Mitchell Clarke Fresh from releasing their debut EP 'Ground Zero', hip-hop band Local To Local, from Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs are headed to the United States in July for a promotional tour.

The multi-cultural male group consists of five members - Tristan Larkin, Jordan Marcovici, Omid Loodin, Dakota M D'Brass and Peter Anbar.

Each member represents a different background with Larkin being Australian, Marcovici being Romanian, Loodin being Afghan,

Anbar being Lebanese and D'Brass being Mauritian.

Rapper Tristan Larkin aka LARKS was born and bred in Berwick and attended Berwick College. He's looking forward to the prospect of success for the band.

"I'd love to see the crew touring internationally," Mr Larkin said.

"That's always been my dream - to be able to travel off and do what I love.

"Heading to LA this July with the crew really is our first step to make that happen."

The bands manager and founder Jordan

Marcovici said the trip to the States is only the beginning for the band.

"Right on the two year anniversary of forming my crew, we're finally ready to take that next step," Mr Marcovici said.

"We're all going to Los Angeles for the summer! We'll be writing, collaborating and finishing our debut album."

After forming in the suburbs the crew have managed to perform headline shows at Crown Entertainment Complex in Melbourne and collaborate with international artists including OVO and Cali Swag District.

Artful culinary experience Art, history, food and performance combine in Of This Earth, as Bunjil Place launches the Art+Climate=Change 2019 Festival through a spectacular collaboration with Carbon Arts on Saturday May 4.

Of this Earth is a one-night-only, roaming theatrical eight course degustation adventure limited to one hundred guests and set within the visionary architecture of Bunjil Place in the City of Casey. Each course explores different themes relating to ecology, native food history, colonised agricultural impacts and the possibilities for a new Australian fusion cuisine.

The Australian Future Foods Lab invites guests on a dizzying and delicious journey through deep geological time to the present, in the hope of inspiring a revolution in food culture. Collaborating with Scale Free Network, Sensory Empire and Future Crunch's Musical Philosopher, guests can discover distinctively Australian tastes and tales, and enter into the complex and evolving story of this land.

Inspired by Bruce Pascoe's book Dark Emu, the evening will feature a soil biome immersion, an edible introduction to artist Vera Moller's exhibition A Thousand Tides, and a conceptual culinary collaboration with Alexander Perry (former chef and restaurateur of The Good Table). On the menu are infusions, fermentations, and paired animals and plants that illustrate the complex web of relationships that sustain us on this earth. The only menu hint for now is Smoked Yabbie and Mussel, Finger Lime and Pig Face!

The Australian Future Foods Lab is an artist-researcher collective led by Carbon Arts, re-igniting taste buds and the cultural imagination in support of emerging and resilient food systems. Working in collaboration with Situation Dining, the Australian Future Foods Lab are set to deepen the exploration of native flavours and sustainable agriculture in 2019 through a profound, immersive dining experience that raises questions about our relationship to place.

The Cavaliers battle it out

By Hayley Wildes It was a round of Big V basketball nail-biters for the Casey Cavaliers over the weekend and three out of four teams came away with key wins.

The Championship men travelled to Werribee on Saturday night and played out an absolute barnstormer against the Devils. Trailing by six points at the main break, Casey needed a lift and Brandon Polk provided exactly that.

He led the Cavs on a monumental thirdquarter revival, pouring in 15 points in the frame as the Cavs outscored the Devils 42-19.

To Werribee's credit, they came again and in the fourth quarter roared home to even the scores with four seconds remaining.

Coach Karl Loh called a timeout to draw up a play and it worked a treat as Ben Louis found Polk, who dunked home the game-winner with just two seconds on the clock. A Werribee long-range heave missed the mark and Casey prevailed in a classic, 112-110.

Polk (34 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks) was extraordinary, while Matt Donlan (22 points), Raheem Lemons (13 rebounds and 12 points) and Ben Louis (10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists) were crucial in the thrilling win.

Backing up the next day is never easy, but the Cavs showed no signs of fatigue at home against Corio Bay on Sunday.

With Polk (25 points and 14 rebounds) completing a monster weekend, along with great performances one again from Lemons (26 points and 7 rebounds) and Donlan (19 points and 5 rebounds), the Cavs ran out 10288 winners.

Casey improves to 7-1 on the season to sit second on the ladder.

While the Championship men left Werribee with a two-point win, the Championship

women were on the other side of the ledger against the Devils.

Trailing by eight points at half time, the Cavs attempted a second half comeback behind the play of Sarah Halejian (33 points and 5 rebounds), but it wasn't quite enough as they fell agonisingly short, 86-84.

Casey owns a 4-2 record and sits fifth on the ladder.

The Youth League 1 men faced Corio Bay on Sunday afternoon at home and came away with a four-point win, 83-79.

Fighting right to the end, the Cavs - with some clutch free throws and great play from Blake Taylor (22 points and 6 rebounds) and Brendon Head (16 points and 8 rebounds) won their third game on the trot.

The Cavs own a 7-1 record and sit second on the ladder.

The Youth League 1 women also claimed a tight win, taking care of McKinnon at home on Saturday night. The low-scoring affair was a defensive battle and with the Cavs forcing the Cougars into 30 turnovers, got the job done, 59-52.

Tess Young (13 rebounds and 11 points) led the way, while Steph Leclerc (12 rebounds, 9 steals and 8 points) almost posted what would've been a sneaky triple-double.

The Cavs improve to 5-2 and sit third on the ladder.

Round 7 sees the Championship women host Sunbury at Casey Stadium on Saturday night from 8pm, while the Championship and Youth League 1 men play a double-header at home on Sunday from 1:30pm.

The Youth League 1 men and women also hit the road on Saturday night, taking on Werribee and Eltham, respectively.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 4 Pearcedale slumped to its third loss in four games, this time falling to a dominant Seaford outfit.

The Panthers were in the contest at half time, trailing by just eight points, but a barnstorming 13-goal to two second half saw the Tigers run away with a commanding 82-point win, 20.15 (135) to 7.11 (53).

Pearcedale was led by Max Gearon and Jack McGuiness in a tough day.

Meanwhile, Devon Meadows fell to 2-3 on the season after Rye claimed the points at Glover Reserve.

Devon Meadows found themselves down by three goals at quarter time and was unable to fight their way back into the contest, despite the best efforts of Joel Hillis (three goals) and Chase Harris. Rye came out 20-point winners, 12.17 (89) to 10.9 (69).

Round 5 sees Devon Meadows host Tyabb, while Pearcedale faces Somerville at home.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 3 Keysborough's defence suffocated Skye, holding the Bombers to just two goals for the game and zero after half time.

The Burras, in Matthew Carnelley's 300th game, were ruthless as Chris Bryan (four goals) and Carnelley (three goals) led the way up forward, while Geoff Humphreys and Thomas Anderton also impressed. Keysborough ran out 16.10 (106) to 2.6 (18) winners.

Doveton sits on top of the ladder after another massive win. Taking on East Brighton, the Eagles were a class above and booted nine goals to zero in the second half to run out 90-point winners, 19.14 (128) to 5.8 (38).

Piva Wright (four goals) was a big presence up forward, while Matthew Beer and Nicholas Battle did it all for Doveton.

Keysborough takes on Hampton in Round 4 and Doveton hosts Chelsea Heights at Power Reserve.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 3 Hampton Park was in all sorts of trouble at

half time - trailing by 26 points - against Black Rock, but came roaring home to claim a gutsy 21-point win, 9.14 (68) to 7.5 (47).

The Redbacks made their move in the third quarter when they held Black Rock scoreless and added four goals of their own. That trend continued in the final term when they added another three goals, while holding their opponents goalless.

Ryan Pearson, Shannon Henwood and Peter Dye (three goals) led the Hampton Park comeback.

DIVISION 4 - ROUND 3 Hallam made it three wins from three games on Sunday, defeating Dandenong with relative ease, 15.11 (101) to 9.10 (64).

Led by Jack Sharlassian (three goals), the Hawks had 10 individual goal-kickers, while Dylan Thompson and Sam Ferrari played key roles.

Lyndhurst and Lyndale played out a tight battle at Marriott Waters Reserve, but the Lightning ultimately came out winners, 9.5 (59) to 7.8 (50).

With goals hard to come by at times, Jarryd McGrath's three goals for Lyndhurst were the difference, while Ryan Henczel and Brandon Ward excelled. For the Pumas, Trent Day and Benton Miles were best.

Hallam will look to keep its winning streak alive against South Yarra in Round 4, while Lyndhurst take on Frankston and Lyndale hosts Dandenong.

WEST GIPPSLAND FOOTBALL NETBALL ROUND 4 Tooradin-Dalmore jumped out of the gates early against Warragul Industrials and got the job done at home in their Anzac Day clash.

A 27-point quarter time lead for the Seagulls was whittled down just 10 points at the main break, but Tooradin - led by Andrew Proctor and Kris Sabbatucci - did enough down the stretch to come away with a 23-point win, 11.15 (81) to 9.3 (57).

In a stunning development in the Southern Football League, the result from a Round 2 clash between Lyndhurst and Moorabbin has been officially overturned after much controversy over the final scoreline.

After the Lightning and Kangaroos clashed on Saturday 13 April in Southern's Division 4 Seniors grade, the match was officially deemed a onepoint victory to Moorabbin, 10.9 (69) to 10.8 (68).

However, under by-law 26.1 in Southern's By-Laws, which states that "A player, member club, league registered umpire, director of umpiring, league official or a board member, may lodge a written complaint/protest with the CEO concerning any act or matter", Lyndhurst submitted a protest to the league after they were adamant they had actually won the game by nine-points, a stunning 10-point difference.

After an extensive investigation that looked into the match videos, timekeepers, goal umpiring and other related factors, the league has confirmed that the final score was in fact Lyndhurst 10.8 (68) to Moorabbin 9.5 (59), and in a statement on the league website said that full points will now be awarded to the Lightning.

"It was established that each club had a timekeeper present for the duration of the game and we are satisfied that both clubs had an official looking over the timing of the match and therefore determine that the timings did not have an influence on the game, however the scoreboard did, which was also controlled from the timekeepers box," the league said.

"Each timekeeper kept separate cards that had the same mistakes. It is also apparent that the goal umpires did not perform their duty in the correct manner.

"After taking all this into consideration, it is clear that Lyndhurst won the game and we have awarded the game to Lyndhurst under protest and the scores and ladder will be changed to reflect the above result."

A re-elected Morrison government will provide $1.5 million to deliver upgrades to the Narre Warren, Pakenham and Berwick bowls clubs according to La Trobe MP Jason Wood.

Mr Wood said the project to upgrade the three bowls clubs, of which each will receive $500,000, was a key priority for him as the local MP because of the significant benefits for the respective local communities.

Mr Wood said sport played an important role across the region and the benefits of the Federal Government's investment in the facilities would be felt right across the community.

"The funding for this important community project is only possible because of the Morrison Government's plan for a stronger economy," Mr Wood said.

"This funding will upgrade the roof cover for players.

"By paying down debt and growing the economy, we can afford to deliver funding for priorities in local communities.

"This is all at risk under Labor and Bill Shorten who pose the greatest risk to Australia's economy in a generation with plans for $387 billion in new taxes on small and family businesses, retirees, housing, income, investments, electricity and cars.

Mr Wood said this year's Federal Budget delivered Australia's first surplus in more than a decade.

The Demons fall in a heartbreaking loss at Casey Fields It was a game that shaped as an early-season blockbuster between two of last year's best home and away season teams.

The battle between the Casey Demons and Richmond Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields certainly lived up to the hype. It was tough, fierce and to say there was a thrilling finish would be an understatement.

After Richmond's Shai Bolton booted the first goal of the game four minutes in, the game turned into a complete arm wrestle and Casey's defence stood up under pressure to restrict the Tigers' potent attack to just one goal for the term.

Having defended well in the opening 20 minutes of the game, Casey slammed on three unanswered goals late in the term. Their first goal, courtesy of Declan Keilty, was a product of some terrific spread and run - the Demons' first real attacking foray of the contest.

It set the Demons alight and a goal after the siren from skipper Mitch White gave Casey plenty of confidence and a 12-point advantage at the first break.

The second quarter was more of the same; a real contest between two committed outfits.

Liam Wale-Buxton booted his first major of the day to push Casey's lead out to 17 points after seven minutes of play.

Richmond's Mabior Chol kicked his first major of the day later in the term and despite missing some opportunities, the Tigers headed into half-time with just two goals to their name and the Demons holding an eight-point lead, 4.1 (25) to 2.5 (17).

Richmond got some much-needed offensive output in the third quarter and piled on four goals in 10 minutes to boast a 17-point lead.

Casey's third quarter simply wasn't good enough and its inability to hit targets saw Richmond take control of the game. Had the Tigers been more efficient going forward, they would've found themselves up by much more than 18 points at the final change.

After coach Jade Rawlings urged his charges to give it all they had at the three-quarter time huddle, the team responded.

Led by Jack Hutchins, the Demons simply wouldn't go away and after White and Wale-

Buxton booted their second goals of the day, Casey was just five points adrift after eight minutes of play.

The play of Wale-Buxton was a highlight for Casey fans and his zest to fight and scrap against Richmond AFL-listed ruckman Ivan Soldo stood out all day.

With Casey pressuring, Beaconsfield local Jake Aarts answered the call for Richmond. His goal against the flow of play saw the Tigers hold an 11-point lead halfway through the term.

Keilty delivered his second goal of the day at the 20-minute mark and when Hutchins slotted a clutch goal with five minutes remaining, the scores were level.

The final minutes were frantic. With the ball deep in Richmond's forward line, a rushed behind saw the Tigers take a one-point lead and unfortunately Casey was unable to answer.

Richmond came away one-point winners in an enthralling contest, 7.10 (52) to 8.3 (51).

Wale-Buxton was superb for the Demons, while White, Hutchins and the Wagner brothers; Josh and Corey were also impressive. Richmond was led by Shai Bolton and skipper Steve Morris.

Magpies are on the build

By Nick Creely It's all about the build, finding the right mix, and ultimately winning ugly in the early stages of a football season.

Premiership winning sides simply can't be running at top-gear all season if they want to be the last side standing on the most important day of the season. It's about the hard work and grind that comes before the glory.

For Narre Warren - after notching a hardfought eight-point win over Beaconsfield at Kalora Park on Saturday in AFL Outer East Premier - they now sit with a 2-1 record and with plenty left to build on in a performance that was scratchy, at times flat, but ultimately with a win.

After Leigh McQuillen's side owned the first portion of the game, the Magpies just clawed their way back, finding their spark eventually to get things level by half-time, and ultimately run away with the game in a dominant third quarter.

The Eagles - led superbly by the likes of Scott Meyer, who is building into some ominous form, as well as VFL-listed forward Riley Verbi and gun backman Jake Bowd - charged home hard to ultimately fall just two kicks short of a remarkable comeback, and will take a lot out of the performance despite slumping to a second-straight loss to begin the season.

Magpies coach Matt Shinners told the News that his side was very much in a learning phase with plenty of experience gone due to retirements, injury and form, and conceded there was some serious work to do despite claiming the points and sitting comfortably in fourth spot.

"At the start of the game, they got away to a two or three goal lead before we sort of scored, but we clawed our way back and got the game back on our terms," he said.

"We're certainly still learning, and have plenty of room to improve - we had plenty of entries in that final quarter and I don't think we actually scored, but that was more due to our own doing.

"The opposition defended well, but the way we played certainly played into their hands."

Shinners said that the new-look forward group - led by three goals to Daniel Jackson, two to Aaron Wilson and another two club legend Michael Collins - is still a work in progress, and is still searching for the right mix, but hopes with some more continuity in the next few weeks can start to play some more consistent, four-quarter footy.

"We had a couple of guys go out with form and injury and we played another few debutants on the weekend, which was good," he said.

"And the new boys going forward are still learning the ropes, so it's good, and like anything, you don't want to be world beaters, and we're certainly getting through the games and winning.

"We've now got a few games in a row, so hopefully what we learned on the weekend we can take into our next opposition. "(And) like anything, you want to look at the win/loss ratio, but we're still making some basic fundamental mistakes, and with young blokes playing senior footy at a different pace, trying to implement your structures, it's getting them experience in the physicality and pace of the game.

"So it's about trying to find the right mix."

Elsewhere, in a rematch of the 2018 Yarra Ranges grand final, a brilliant Woori Yallock held off the reigning premiers Wandin in a fascinating battle to start off their season with a bang.

The Tigers - led superbly by the likes of Zach Monkhorst, as well as solid performances from Kane Thompson, Michael Batten and Ben Monkhorst - managed to produce a scintillating final quarter masterclass to claim some early season bragging rights, 13.8 (86) to 10.17 (77).

Berwick, meanwhile, taught Healesville a harsh footballing lesson in the Anzac Day clash at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Wickers were merciless against the struggling Bloods, running out 152-point winners in front of a strong crowd, 28.16 (184) to 5.2 (32).

In Division 1, Pakenham coach Ash Green said it best after his side moved to 2-0 after defeating Officer in Thursday's Anzac Day blockbuster at Toomuc Reserve, "We really haven't been in that situation for quite a few years."

He's right; the Lions are absolutely flying with a host of talented kids and a noticeable injection of much-needed depth.

The Anzac Day clash between the Lions and Kangaroos was by no means unforgettable, in fact it really was a scrap for most of it, but the manner in which the Lions wore down their opponents with fanatical pressure and precise ball movement was impressive to watch.

They've slowly become harder to play against, tough in the clinches and with burning speed on the outside by some of their impressive youngsters.

On what was a special day on the footballing calendar with a moving pre-match ceremony, once the dust settled and both sides got into their groove, it was obvious that the Lions were hungrier at the contest and that the Kangaroos - for a second consecutive week - looked flat.

Running the ball superbly and intercepting everything off half-back, the Lions were excellent, but couldn't quite capitalise to take a 14-point quarter time advantage, leaving Doug Koop's side goalless.

Koop urged his side at the quarter time break to put the quarter behind them and get back in the contest, and despite putting in a more noticeable effort around the contest, with the likes of leaders Matthew Clarke, James Waldon and Ben Tivendale starting to get some run and carry, a late surge before half-time by Green's side saw them extend their advantage to 19-points despite spraying some shots at goal to kick 5.8 for the half.

With eventual Anzac Day medal winner Dermott Yawney indestructible in the back half, and Josh Tynan and Chris Cardona using the ball superbly, the Kangaroos just couldn't break the lines and get any real momentum in their game, but stayed in touch by a tick under three goals.

"We know Officer is a quality side and were going to bounce back from last week - it was pretty physical, and it got a bit dark in the last quarter using the red footy," he said.

Describing the game as "scrappy", Green said it was at times tough to watch the game.

"We found it really hard to watch the game from the box, more so from the far side of the ground, and we probably didn't capitalise with some easy missed goals," he said.

Ball movement and speed was one of the real highlights for the Lions in an otherwise dour game of football, and Green said it came down to having plenty of focal points in attack, meaning his side were confident moving the ball quickly.

"We've got some higher targets down there, with Matty Ryan coming into the side, and you've got Darcy Hope, Liam Tyrrell and Joe Baker-Thomas, so we were confident going into those taller targets," he said.

"We are playing with more confidence - it's only Round 2 obviously, but there's a bit of self-belief."

As for the Anzac Day medallist Dermott Yawney - who was absolutely brilliant in an eye-catching display - Green said the club was ecstatic to have him, and has big hopes for his place in the side.

Narre's Mitch Dempster shoots for goal. 192847 "We spoke to him 12 months ago to try and get him to the club, but he wanted to stay where he was. We played him forward in the pre-season games, but with the other three talls down there, we've thrown him down back," he said.

"When Stephen Morey left, and now he's come back, he sort of complimented where his role was, and we lacked a key defender, so he's been fantastic.

"He's only a young kid, but he backs his own ability. He's working on the defensive side of the game, but just the way he's gone the first two rounds under pressure, we're really excited for him and rapt that he's at the club."

With expectation both internally and externally to heat up after an impressive opening few weeks, Green said his side will remain grounded and keep working hard with plenty of challenges to come.

"We really haven't been in that situation for quite a few years, and we spoke about that after the game," he said.

"Firstly to win our first opening round game for a few years and to beat Officer for the first time in a few years, and thirdly we haven't been in that position being in front for a whole game, so it was probably a really good thing. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
