Marathon in Antarctica in December.

"I'm really excited about the Ice Marathon, which is the only marathon held on mainland Antarctica. Completing this race will make me a member of the 7 Continents Marathon Club, which is for people who have run a marathon on all 7 Continents," she said.

"There are currently only 334 members of the 7 Continents Marathon Club, of which 79 are female ... only seven of the 79 females are from Australia, so I am excited to raise that number to 8."

The Great Train Race takes place on Sunday 5 May 2019.

Marathon in 1998, and not long after that I moved to Upper Ferntree Gully and decided to give the Great Train Race a go.

"There is nothing like the atmosphere of the Great Train Race and the excitement of trying to beat the train. The start is a lot of fun, with the driver running to the engine as the runners take off from the start line. You can hear the train throughout the race but never quite know where it is."

For Louise Edwards of Upper Ferntree Gully, the 2019 Great Train Race at Puffing Billy is an extra special one.

Having run the race eight times since 2001, this year it will provide her with an important training race in the lead up to her completing the Antarctic Ice Marathon in December.

Finishing the Ice Marathon will also make her a member of the 7 Continents Marathon Club, something only seven Australian women have achieved before her.

Louise, who says she was not a 'sporty kid',

only started running as an adult to improve her fitness on the squash court.

It didn't take her long to find her groove and she is now a regular competitor in marathons all over the world.

Being a local of the Dandenong Ranges, Louise said she has a soft spot for the Great Train Race and loves the change of racing a train instead of the clock.

"I started out running around my local area, building up to shorter fun runs, which then moved into longer runs and half marathons," Louise said.

Liberal cash splash

By Derek Schlennstedt Casey MP Tony Smith is splashing cash across the Dandenongs ahead of the federal election in May. Among a number of projects Tony Smith announced on 24 April that a re-elected Morrison Government will contribute $45,000 for the construction of a new verandah at the rear of the Dandenong Ranges RSL. As part of this funding, a new reflection area will be constructed for members and visitors to have a dedicated area for reflection and remembrance.

In Upwey, Tony Smith announced that a re-elected Morrison Government will provide $272,000 to fund the upgrade of UpweyTecoma Bowls Club's front green, replace its existing lights and install new lighting over the

Club's other bowling green.

Mr Smith said that the improved facilities will increase the opportunities to participate in new competitions.

"The volunteer based club is focused on its community, reaching out to many in Upwey and Tecoma, including local schools."

"By replacing its existing front synthetic green and its existing lights and installing new lights over its rear green, members and others using the Club's facilities will experience topclass conditions."

On top of these announcements Mr Smith also announced that a re-elected Morrison Government will provide the $250,000 required to construct a new car park and play area at the Monbulk Recreation Reserve.

This funding commitment will complete an enhanced and extended parking area, together

with a new play area.

Another $500,000 will go towards the construction of a netball court with lighting at the Belgrave Recreational Reserve, but only if a Morrison government is re-elected.

Mr Smith said that for over a decade the Belgrave Football Netball Club members have had to travel to an alternative reserve in Belgrave South for training and home games.

He said this project will enable the club's growing number of netballers the chance to train and play at their own home ground.

A total of $110, 7000 will be spent across the Dandenong Ranges with Mr Smith announcing a re-elected Morrison Government will also contribute $40,000 towards a new shed and Q- store at the Ferny Creek Scout Hall.

Australians will go to the polls on 18 May.

Sassafras local makes it to MasterChef

By Derek Schlennstedt When she's not whipping up a delicious curry in the kitchen, Sassafras resident Tati Carlin loves to spend her downtime studying history and reading the latest best-selling thriller.

And she's hoping her own MasterChef journey is just as thrilling, aiming to hold the coveted trophy at the grand finale.

Tati, aged 49, grew up in in a small town in Indonesia and was raised by her paternal grandparents.

She described her grandmother as a great traditional cook who taught her the intricate mild and sweet curries traditional to Java and Indonesia, which she said she'll be recreating for the competition.

"I used to help my grandma's cooking when I was little and I always got excited when i could help her in the kitchen," Tati said.

"In Indonesia we are a very strong community, so when it comes to a party or function the neighbours come to our house and everyone gives a hand and starts cooking, so I'd help my grandma and that's how I started to build up my love for cooking since a very young age."

"My grandma's cooking was very Javanese style and had a lot of chillies, garlic, coconut and lemon grass, ... it was very aromatic cooking and the whole house always smelt beautiful."

Admitting Asian curries and cooking with intuition will be her strength in the MasterChef kitchen, Tati said following recipes was harder, and she worried about desserts and pressure tests.

"It's very challenging to cook with the timer and camera around you and people cheering for you.

"I'm a home cook so I'm used to watching Netflix and taking my time, but you just have to focus on what you're doing."

"We will try to focus on our cuisine, who we are and what we love to eat on a day-to-day basis."

Police boost on its way The Yarra Ranges police service area has one new officer heading its way.

Victoria Police on Friday 26 April announced where 709 additional police officers and 25 protective services officers (PSOs) would be deployed across the state over 12 months starting in May. Yarra Ranges will receive one new police officer directly, and will benefit from three new members in the divisional highway patrol and 10 new divisional family violence specialists.

Victoria Police said the family violence specialists would further free up general duties police to focus on providing a highly-visible, agile policing response in their community.

The family violence specialists will complete Victoria Police's transition to state-wide Family Violence Investigation Units (FVIUs) with dedicated detectives and intelligence practitioners embedded into the teams.

Puffing Billy closures Police are reminding drivers to remain patient during the Puffing Billy Great Train race that takes place on Sunday 5 May. Traffic management safety controls including road closures will occur on roads associated with the Great Train Race between 7am and 1pm and includes the race route and roads between Belgrave and Emerald.

The race is expected to start at 9am in Belgrave which is 30 minutes earlier than in previous years.

Areas most affected are between Belgrave and Emerald Lake Park, Emerald.

Motorists are required to obey directions from police and traffic controllers and be aware of runners on the roads.

Puffing Billy Railway apologises for any inconvenience caused to residents and motorists during this period.

Arrest for motorcycle theft Police arrested a 17-year-old boy over the theft of a motorcycle from Belgrave Railway Station on the morning of 23 April.

He is due to face court at a later date.

Fire danger period ending The Fire Danger Period will end on Wednesday 1 May in the Yarra Ranges and Cardinia.

The CFA-declared period restricts the use of fire in the community to help prevent fires from starting, and started on 19 November.

Local council restrictions on burning off will still apply once the Fire Danger Period is lifted.

Supported at home by her Husband and son, Tati said she that it was a dream come true, to be on MasterChef."It was a nerve racking experience and when I received my apron it was like a dream come true."

A driver performing a one-man show in his Toyota Camry on 22 April didn't find the audience he was looking for, when Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol pulled him over.

The man was intercepted at a breath-testing site on Swansea Road, Lilydale at 7.55am when officers observed him using his phone while driving to stream a pop music video.

Enquiries made by police revealed the man was travelling using a learner's permit without an experienced person in the car, and was not displaying the mandatory 'L' plates.

The 29-year-old Springvale man was issued with $1400 in fines for various traffic offences, and had to find a groupie to come and pick him up.

Keeping the kids healthy Autumn brings a unique set of challenges to our immune system such as smoke haze, cooler weather and increased humidity.

I'd like to offer you some excellent tips to help fortify your child's innate defences, protect them against avoidable illness and prepare for winter.

Keep warm: Babies and children have less body mass to weight ratio compared to adults making them more susceptible to cold.

Ensure their feet, lower back and necks are kept warm.

Wear socks and slippers inside and shoes when playing outdoors.

Jumpers, thermal tops and neck gaiters are excellent at keeping your children warm and toasty.

Encourage adequate rest: When your child is rested they are more resilient at fighting off illness.

In my last article I wrote about sympathetic dominance, or fight and flight overdrive, which results in chronic stress and compromised immune function.

A well-rested child will be relaxed and have better quality sleep.

A significant amount of immune surveillance and repair occurs during sleep and a relaxed child will assimilate more nutrients in

their small intestine.

This is important given about 80 per cent of immune function depends on gut health.

Amazing diet: A whole-food diet, rich in plant-based foods that are seasonal and preferably organic will serve your family well.

There is plenty of evidence to support the health effects of whole foods in preventing, treating and reversing illness.

A diverse diet will provide a rich array of phytonutrients and building blocks that support excellent immune development and function.

In my practice I encourage children to eat at least 15 different foods every day with as many colours of the rainbow.

I get them to make a chart and map their success.

It's best to avoid cold food and drink during autumn and winter, too.

Remember, the body is trying to keep cold out, not invite it in.

Some "my kids are still sick" troubleshooting tips: Sometimes kids are still prone to frequent illness.

In these cases it's necessary to dig deeper, and address underlying cause(s).

I routinely find that gut dysbiosis, nutrient deficiency, malabsorption, foods sensitivity, and environmental drivers such as mould and biotoxins compromise immune function.

This can be quite a mine field to navigate and should be assessed by a qualified and experienced practitioner.

I have no doubt your kids' immune systems will better for these tips.

Further to my letter regarding electric power cars, it should be said that ‘electric taxi with swap batteries’ is a great starting point for swap battery cars or taxis on YouTube.

The Philippines are currently getting rid of 3,500,000 two stroke tuk tuk for their own exchange batteries.

Check YouTube as well, all too simple.

Now purely by chance the Yarra Ranges Council has just purchased two traditional battery cars that cannot be exchanged, so they have to stand for six to eight hours to be recharged.

Who was responsible for this nonsense, who didn’t do the research for the council?

In private enterprise these people would lose their jobs.

If they are denied places in the Belgrave station car park, Hayes car park and Reynolds Lane car park in favour of short-term shoppers, they may have to drive all the way to work.

If there are to be fewer long-term places, what measures are being taken to assist those who use them at present?

Surely everything possible should be done to limit the number of cars on the roads.

Obviously it is becoming more urgent to enlarge the station car park by adding another level.

Vying for your vote

By Casey Neill The candidates for next month's Federal Election have been announced.

Locally, there are 10 contesting the seat of Casey, five vying for Aston and seven running for La Trobe.

The Casey electorate takes in most of the Yarra Ranges, with Belgrave, Mount Dandenong and surrounding areas new to the patch this election.

Liberal Tony Smith has held the seat since 2001 and will recontest.

Taking him on will be the ALP's Bill Brindle, Green Jenny Game-Lopata, independent Peter Charleton, Rise Up Australia Party's Antony

Calabro, DLP's Ross McPHEE, Travis Barker from the Animal Justice Party, Wendy Starkey from the United Australia Party, Ryan Leslie Clark from Derryn Hinch's Justice Party and The Great Australian Party's Jayden O'Connor.

The Aston covers a small portion of the Mail's coverage area, including Ferntree Gully, Upper Ferntree Gully and Sassafras.

Liberal incumbent Alan Tudge will recontest the seat.

Green Asher Cookson, ALP's Kadira Pethiyagoda, Matthew Sirianni-Duffy from the United Australia Party and the DLP's Anna Kennedy are running against him.

La Trobe, again, covers a small area of the Mail's territory, in Emerald, Gembrook, Cock-

atoo, Menzies Creek and surrounds.

Liberal incumbent Jason Wood will recontest, with Simon Curtis from the ALP taking him on again after a narrow defeat at the 2016 election.

Also contesting the seat are Green Amy Gregorovich, who ran for Gembrook at last year's state election, Norman Baker from the Rise Up Australia Party, Esther Baker from Pauline Hanson's One Nation, Duncan Dean from the United Australia Party, and Asher Joseph Calwell-Browne from Derryn Hinch's Justice Party.

Grant brings technology closer to kids

By Derek Schlennstedt The Philanthropic collective has contributed $1000 towards the creation of a MakerSpace for the students of Sassafras Primary School.

The MakerSpace project is an important strategy to better engage all Sassafras Primary students in hands-on education that gives them an understanding of the powerful role of technology in learning and life.

Principal Stacey Goodger was delighted by the donation and said the Makerspace will help to promote hands-on exploration of hydraulics, motion, conductivity, electronics, coding and robotics "We're a fairly small school so we're focused on what the kids really enjoy doing, and our kids really enjoy tinkering," Ms Goodger said.

"For us, being a small school funds are hard to come by, so it's really vital for us when community groups step in and help us out in this way, it just gives us that little bit of an extra boost to get things moving."

"Our kids are quit creative and love doing stuff with the Ipad and electronic so having the equipment to support that is really important."

A Makerspace is a place where people can come together to use, and learn to use materials as well as develop creative projects.

The Philanthropic Collective, a not-forprofit association that supports schools and students along the ridge line of the Dandenong range donated $1000 to help the school reach their target of $3000.

"They are tiny schools and they get hit, and the parents get hit hard so we see who we can help and try to distribute some of the money we get from our Halloween on the Green event," said Philanthropic Collective Communication Advisor Belinda Young.

With the newly added funds, Ms Goodger said the school will finally be able to buy a range of coding machines that fall in-line with the STEM curriculum.

"It's something we've wanted to do for a long time, but a project of this cost is something that would take us along time to raise alone," Ms Goodger said.

Easter blitz

By Derek Schlennstedt Four unlicensed drivers and four disqualified drivers were caught by Victoria Police over the Easter weekend on Yarra Ranges roads.

Over the five-day Operation Nexus period, police detected 231 offences - the majority of these were speeding offences, with 126 drivers being nabbed in the municipality.

Other common offences included thirteen accounts of drink/drug driving.

Sixteen drivers were caught driving with mobile phones, and two vehicles were impounded over the Easter period.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant, Dave McIlfatrick said the results were disappointing.

"It's disappointing to see that people are still taking risks on the road particularly around the long weekend, when they really should be more patient," he said.

"It's everyone's responsibility to drive safely and keep the road toll down."

Sgt McIlfatrick said it was particularly concerning to see people were still driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"It's very concerning to see so many people detected drink and drug driving in the Yarra Ranges, and we'll be running some operations in the near future to target these people."

Operation Nexus ran from 12.01am on Thursday 18 April until 11.59pm Monday 22 April, 2019.

Around the state, three people were killed in collisions during the five-day operation.

A new interactive website is helping parents to find out what school zone they live in.

The State Government created a simple and clear website so, for the first time, Victorian parents can enter their home address online and see their local school zone.

A number of anomalies in school zoning have also been addressed.

Previously some homes were excluded from a school zone and, in some cases, school boundaries overlapped. The Find My School website also includes zones for the new schools opening in 2020. The website allows parents to search for their closest school as well as find other nearby government schools.

"For decades parents haven't had easy access to enrolment zones, causing unnecessary stress for thousands of families," Education Minister James Merlino said.

"Since the start of last year alone we've received nearly 6000 calls, letters and emails from families wanting to know their local school zones."

Now parents can find their local schools by typing in a residential address or suburb, searching by school name or searching by categories such as primary, secondary, or specialist school.

The site is designed to provide parents with clarity and consistency on what their government school options are.

ANZAC DAY 2019

Emerald remembers still

By Russell Bennett They came from all over to stand as one, reflecting in silence as the brutal sounds of war rang out.

Emerald's Anzac Day dawn service gave a packed crowd the chance to stop and gain some much-needed perspective about just what it means to live in such a privileged, free country.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin and interim CEO of the Emerald Tourist Railway Board, Steve O'Brien, were among those in attendance.

And after The Last Post, kookaburras burst into song in the trees surrounding the now iconic Anzac Place, while the Puffing Billy whistle echoed throughout the town centre.

What Emerald's dawn service has become, and what it means to its people, is the legacy of the town's RSL branch, and in particular its tireless members - including the likes of Matt Cocks, and former president Peter Maloney.

"We're very proud of our dawn service," Mr Maloney said in his opening comments.

"It's become part of Emerald now."

Mr Cocks, the master of ceremonies, spoke in depth about the full meaning of the ANZAC acronym.

"This will be the 14th Anzac Day I've been involved in," he explained.

"In that time we've well and truly covered the 'A' in ANZAC, but it was brought to my attention more recently that I've not really paid respect to the 'NZ' - the New Zealanders, the Kiwis, the neighbours of ours over the ditch.

"This year, we'll do exactly that for you today - pay homage to the New Zealanders.

"At the outbreak of World War I, New Zealand - although another world away from the mother country - did not hesitate to come to the aid of the Commonwealth.

"There was one condition that Bill Massey, the New Zealand Prime Minister, insisted on that the Kiwis would serve together with the Australian forces: hence the formation of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, the ANZACs.

"Although a small nation in population (then) approximately one million - but big in heart, 120,000 Kiwis volunteered for service with 100,000 serving in combat areas."

More than 18,000 of those perished.

This Anzac Day was also one in which the

Emerald RSL officially recognised the region's own servicemen - in its own, unique way.

As Mr Maloney explained to the Mail, the First World War had just ended when Emerald residents decided to honour the locals who'd served by erecting in the Emerald hall and honour board which recorded 135 names of men from Emerald and the surrounding district.

When the hall burnt down in 1955, so did that honour board, and since that time the town has been without a memorial to show who from the area served and died in conflicts Australia has entered into.

Only one photo of the original honour board has been found, and that photo was taken in 1936 at the Emerald gymnasium ball. In the early 2000s, Emerald RSL historian - and former Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Legge transcribed, with the aid of a magnifying glass, over 80 names in the photograph. Jan Shaw, the Emerald RSL's research officer, has since confirmed 100 of the 135 names and remains confident that, over time, she can shed light on even more names on the list.

In honour of these 100 who served their country, a plaque was unveiled this Anzac Day. The eligibility criteria for the 100 is "those soldiers identified as being strongly affiliated with Emerald at the outbreak of WWI".

As Mr Maloney also explained to the Mail, the next job for the RSL will be erect a similar plaque for those who served during World War II, and it's expected this will be done in time for Remembrance Day later this year.

The RSL's latest research has identified that 34 local men died in World War I, but only three during World War II.

The services featured a minute's silence for the Christchurch shooting and Sri Lanka bombing victims.

"The feedback I've had has all been very positive," Mr Eaton said.

"I think it was good for the RSL, for the subbranch."

Attendance was up at the Upwey-Belgrave RSL sub-branch's Anzac Day commemorations.

President David Eaton said the dawn and main services went extremely well and attracted big numbers.

He said road works and some concern about safety might have kept people from attending the Melbourne CBD service, and encouraged them to attend local services.

"The weather was perfect," Mr Eaton said.

"The guest speakers worked out brilliantly."

Captain Iain Fraser spoke at the dawn service.

The ex-New Zealand army member joined the Victoria Police in 2000, graduated in 2001 and lives in Kalorama.

"He plays veterans cricket for Olinda and he's an ex-rugby player," Mr Eaton said.

At the main service the crowd heard from HMAS Cerberus Lieutenant James Kerin.

Monbulk honours Anzacs

By Derek Schlennstedt As the Anzac Day march proceeded down the Monbulk main street, and towards the town's RSL, thousands lined the streets to pay their respects.

Family members proudly wore the medals of relatives, men and women, who served their country in the fields of war around the world.

At 10am on 25 April they congregated at the Monbulk RSL to remember the services of Australian soldiers both past and present.

The service proving to be a heartening collaboration of local community groups, which included the local CFA, police, Country Women's Association, traders, schools and the RSL. As Monbulk RSL President, Bob Ford aptly summed up, "the Monbulk service makes you proud to live in Monbulk."

"It's the community involvement ... having school music bands, school choirs and scout groups involved," he said.

"We get a lot of community involvement to create something that is a part of Monbulk."

This Anzac Day was one in which the Monbulk RSL paid particular attention to one of the town's most influential pioneers during the war years, and Anthony McAleer spoke from the heart about Mrs Aeneas Gunn.

As Mr McAleer explained Mrs Gunn came to the Monbulk fore during WW1, to support and console the community with such devotion and compassion that she earned herself a permanent place in the hearts of those who lived there.

"Jeannie Gunn is better remembered as Mrs Aeneas Gunn OBE, an Australian literary legend well known throughout our nation as the author of that classic tale of outback pioneers, called 'We of the Never Never,' though, few

"In 1914 war started and Mrs Gunn witnessed the men of Monbulk going off to serve in the conflict.

"She had a great devotion and sympathy for these men with which she had spent so much time with, and over the following years she fondly referred to them as, 'my boys.' "she wrote letters to them with news from home, she sent parcels and photos and she knitted for them almost constantly ... even inventing a bracelet in which she could carry a ball of wool so she could walk and knit at the same time."

Mr McAleer explained that Ms Gunn's energy and admiration had always been directed toward the individual, and as such in her own caring he explained that she virtually adopted all the men who went to fight in both WW1 and WW2.

"Monbulk owes Mrs Gunn a great debt and I would like to put it to you, in the centenary of those post WW1 years when she did so much, let's build a statue to her here in her memory and as tribute to her in Monbulk."

Pete’s last puff with Billy

By Derek Schlennstedt While 13-year-old, Eva Dickinson, will be running her very first Great Train Race on Sunday, Peter Thorne, 70, from Menzies Creek is preparing to run his last.

The race veteran ran the first ever Great Train Race in 1982 and has only missed five races in its 38-year history.

Though, after a lifetime of being involved in the race, he is now preparing to hang up his shoes at the age of 70.

"I love the Great Train Race, not only for the unique challenges it offers runners, but also because of the beautiful scenery you pass through and the close knit feel of the race," he said.

"I remember my first Great Train Race back in 1982 - the very first time the event took place.

"I had lived in the area for many years and was in my early 30s. I enjoyed running and thought the race would be a good challenge.

I remember that I was driven to the start line

and hitchhiked back home at the end ... they were different times."

Mr Thorne said he has only missed around five Great Train Races in its history; one of those was due to contracting paratyphoid after a trip to India.

He said he was yet to beat the train, but in his second year finished in 54 minutes - his best time ever.

After 35 years though, he told the Mail it was time to pass the baton on to his daughter.

"There used to be a big group of us that would run together each year, but that has dwindled down as we have all aged ... It certainly gets harder as the years go by."

"I've given myself permission to finish up after this year's run. One of my daughters runs the Great Train Race now so I might become one of the spectators instead and take it all in from a different perspective," he said.

The Great Train Race takes place on Sunday 5 May 2019.

Rare bird numbers rise thanks to 30 years of volunteers

By Derek Schlennstedt The helmeted honeyeater is the bird emblem of Victoria and for 30 years, the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters have been helping to save the cute yellow bird from extinction. In May 1989 when the population of the helmeted honeyeater reached a critically low level of 50 birds, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater formed to help save them.

Since the groups formation numbers have risen to over 200 birds - an achievement that would not have been possible without the contribution and dedication of the volunteer group.

This May heralds 30 years since the groups inception, and to continue doing their vital work the group is welcoming new volunteers.

Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater President, Alan Clayton explained that it was timely to take stock of what has been achieved and how the group can best meet the challenges of the future.

"Volunteers have been the lifeblood of the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHH) since its inception in 1989," said "Without the contribution of volunteers, our achievements in securing the future of the Helmeted Honeyeater (HeHos) would not

have been possible."

"Volunteers are the backbone and the core of our work and we're always interested in more volunteers ... anyone interested can contact us through our website."

The major aim of the group is to protect existing habitat and plant future habitat for the helmeted honeyeater.

"We have volunteers who help in the nursery on a Tuesday and Thursday, and we have volunteer field assistants who monitor the health of the bird in the wild which is done by supplementary feeding and monitoring of hel-

meted honeyeater's in Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve."

To mark the group anniversary, the group will be holding a special symposium on Saturday May 25 in Lilydale, at which keynote speakers Jenny Gray, CEO of Zoos Victoria and Sally Box will speak.

Mr Clayton said that over 30 years the group has achieved huge success and that success is reflected in the increase in the bird population."The numbers of the bird have increased from 50 to around 220 over the last five years, that's a great increase and we're proud to have played a part in that."

Celebrating the chestnut season

By Jed Lanyon The Kalorama Chestnut Festival returns to the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday 5 May. For more than 30 years the event has offered a celebration of the chestnut season with a range of food and drinks.

Hosted by Mt Dandenong Pre-School, the festival will feature plenty of stalls selling locally made handicrafts, a variety of food including roasted chestnuts, poffertjes and home-made cakes.

Participants can grab a sausage sizzle lunch and try some artisan beer, mulled wine or just a tea or coffee.

There'll be plenty of fun activities for kids, such as bungy jump trampolines, mini golf, train rides, flying swings, petting zoos and live entertainment and music.

Chestnuts have been grown in Australia for more than 100 years and offer high fibre and vitamin C whether they're boiled, roasted or fried.

Chestnuts are synonymous with autumn in Australia, so what better way is there to kickoff the new season than by visiting the Kalorama Chestnut Festival?

Five years after alien tyrant Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Gauntlet, the remaining Avengers embark on a daring plan to reverse Thanos’s actions.

Endgame may have the best sustained dramatic tension in a major blockbuster since The Last Jedi, and contains a strong dose of consequence, which has been lacking in even the best MCU movies.

Barely a moment of the daunting threehour run-time feels wasted. Endgame establishes a clear objective - which I won’t spoil - and challenges the characters with a steady stream of set-backs and obstacles. The battle sequences course with apocalyptic struggle and triumphant fan-service moments, but the film also devotes ample time to quiet stretches emphasising pathos and character depth.

From the beginning, Endgame delves deep into the physical and emotional toll endured by the survivors of Thanos’s cull. The grief and weariness of these heroes, and the sudden emptiness of the world around them, are palpable, and this desolate atmosphere renders their plan all the more urgent.

Endgame successfully walks the tight-rope of essentially concluding the MCU, poignantly wrapping up eleven years of conflict and relationships among its main characters, while still delivering a thrilling, deeply suspenseful experience on its own.

Avengers: Endgame is, simply put, one of the best superhero films ever made.

A harsh lesson for Bloods

By Nick Creely Berwick taught Healesville a harsh footballing lesson in the AFL Outer East Premier division Anzac Day clash at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Wickers were merciless against the struggling Bloods, running out 152-point winners in front of a strong crowd, 28.16 (184) to 5.2 (32).

Rhys Nisbet's premiership winning juggernaut made the Bloods pay in an attacking masterclass, with Harry Money continuing his fine start to the season with another six majors, bringing his tally to 15 from just three matches to begin the year.

After a moving pre-match ceremony, the Wickers slammed on nine opening quarter goals, opening up a 44-point lead, one that the visitors couldn't peg back at all, and could

only muster up another three goals from the remaining three quarters, with Nick Mende the best on a disappointing day.

For the Wickers, who are building into the season superbly, were well served by the run of Ash Smith, as well as the class from the likes of Luke Jellyman-Turner, Bailey Asher and Money, and enjoyed a whopping 13 individual goal kickers.

In other Premier matches played on Saturday, Woori Yallock turned the chocolates on a wasteful Wandin in a 2018 grand final rematch, 13.8 (86) to 10.17 (77). Upwey Tecoma made the most of their chances in a 14.15 (99) win over Olinda Ferny Creek, while Narre Warren overcame a fast-finishing Beaconsfield to claim the four-points, 12.13 (85) to 11.11 (77).

In Division 1 action, Emerald's woes to begin the season continued with another

disappointing loss, this time to Belgrave by 21-points, 11.10 (76) to 8.7 (55).

A slow start from the Bombers ultimately cost them, scoring just the one-goal in the opening half as Nathan Johns' side surged out to a 27-point half time advantage, courtesy of a terrific first hour from the likes of Aaron Johns and Matt Johnson.

Despite an admirable fight back, as well as pegging the deficit to just fewer than three goals, the Magpies steadied in the final quarter to record a hard-fought four points.

In other matches, Warburton Millgrove couldn't hold off the resurgent Doveton at Mac Sparke Oval, 15.11 (101) to 11.11 (77), Pakenham moved to 2-0 in an Anzac Day win in front of a monster crowd against Officer 10.13 (73) to 9.4 (58), while a wayward Monbulk did just enough in a belter of a clash against Mt Evelyn,

10.22 (82) to 11.10 (76).

Across Division 2, a blistering display from Kinglake on Anzac Day saw the Lakers record an incredible 201-point win against Yea, 35.20 (230) to 4.5 (29).

The Lakers actually started quite slowly, only kicking five first-quarter majors, but piled on 30 in the remaining three quarters - including 12 in the third - to inflict some serious pain.

Chris Horman (eight goals), Andrew Fairchild (seven) and Bailey Robinson (six goals) were the stars in the forward half.

In other matches across Division 2, Alexandra smashed Thornton Eildon, 19.17 (131) to 6.10 (46), Seville held off Powelltown in a 10.12 (72) to 7.11 (53) thriller, while Yarra Junction inflicted Gembrook Cockatoo with another tough loss to run out 45-point winners, 19.9 (123) to 11.12 (78).

Silvan hosts lone Anzac Day footy match

By Jed Lanyon Silvan Football Club hosted Coldstream Football Netball Club in the only game of local footy on Anzac Day in the Yarra Valley region.

Silvan held pre-game tributes to honour the Anzacs, and each player from Silvan wore a commemorative Anzac Day guernsey that featured images of soldiers at Gallipoli for the round 3 matchup.

State Member for Evelyn Bridget Vallence delivered the ode of remembrance, before the last post was played followed by a minute of

silence and the Australian national anthem.

Federal Member for Casey Tony Smith then tossed the coin in the lead up to the first bounce.

Four wins on the road Premier League Netball resumed after the Easter break in the AFL Outer East Competition with Olinda Ferny Creek on the road.

First up it was the 17 and under girls who travelled to Casey Fields to take on Cranbourne.

The first quarter was a blow-out with Cranbourne heading into the quarter-time break with a commanding 18 to 3 lead.

To their credit, the young Swannies stuck at it against much stronger opposition, never throwing in the towel and going goal-for-goal with Cranbourne in the last quarter.

Charlotte McGrath and Kate Mikulandra impressed in their debuts for the club and Ella Grigg and Gramercy Russell fought hard in the mid-court.

The open squad rolled down the hill to Upwey Recreation Reserve to take on UpweyTecoma.

D-grade was the first game up and it was an enthralling game with the lead changing on several occasions throughout.

Olinda Ferny Creek had its nose in front when the final hooter blew.

Casey Seymour had a best on court performance and was ably supported by Mary Taylor, Caz Bates and Emmalee Keegan.

C-grade saw Olinda Ferny Creek lead at all changes and take control of the game in the last quarter to sneak away with a nine-goal victory.

Paris Tilley was outstanding in defense, Adrienne Oates proved to be versatile in both attack and mid court, and Sera Long was steady in defence.

B-grade saw the Bloods flex their muscle in a strong performance against Upwey-Tecoma, shooting 17 goals in the first quarter.

With Bron Simpson turning in her second consecutive best on court performance, Rhi Pendleton and Dana Portarianos strong in midcourt and Nic Millwood shooting 34 goals, the girls were never headed.

A-grade saw another dominant performance by the Olinda Ferny Creek girls, shooting nine goals before the clock had ticked over four minutes of the first quarter.

At quarter time they led 24 to nine and the result was never in doubt from that point.

Alice Paget and Krista Tomlinson were outstanding in the midcourt, and Peri Stewart shot 47 goals for the match while her sister, Elly Stewart proved her versatility by moving from goal keeper to goal shooter during the second half and shooting 20 goals.

This coming Saturday, Olinda Ferny Creek will host Healesville in five great games of netball. The action starts at 10.30am at Olinda Recreation Reserve.

By Judy Kennedy Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club players hit full stride this weekend as the Victorian Churches Football Association competition kicked off and the Football Federation of Victoria rounds resumed after the Easter break.

Junior co-ordinator Ewa Wallis said close to 400 juniors had signed up to play soccer for Monbulk, adding to the 200 senior players competing in both leagues.

"We've had an excellent response in terms of registrations from a wide feeder area that stretches from Nar Nar Goon up the Yarra Valley and out to Croydon," she said.

"Our two synthetic pitches and state of the art clubhouse in Old Emerald Road are attracting players who want a great experience but also top level coaching, and having the senior men's and women's teams gives our juniors something to aspire to."

The Monbulk Rangers senior men's team was elevated to State League 2 South East this season and has notched up several important victories to be in first place alongside Boroondara-Carey Eagles.

In the VCFA, the Under-14 Spells have started the season well winning two from two, 4-0 against South Melbourne and 3-1 versus Healesville.
