Man flees crash

By Jed Lanyon A man fled on foot after a two-car collision on the Warburton Highway in Seville East at around 4.30pm Monday 15 April.

Police said that witnesses saw a man running through paddocks towards Yellingbo after rear-ending a Nissan Patrol.

At the time of going to press he had not been found and police believe he might have sustained facial injuries from the crash.

His vehicle was unregistered with Queensland licence plates.

The victim is believed to have escaped uninjured.

This crash followed a fatal collision on 4 April, where a 54-year-old Woori Yallock man died in the three-car collision.

Residents’ requests for VicRoads to take action have so far fallen on deaf ears.

Joel Supple has joined other Seville residents to create the Seville East Safety Group.

Mr Supple said that the road should have designated turning lanes at Dourthie, Sunnyside and Stuart roads, as well as an island-

protected turning lane at Peters Road.

“If we have a protected island it helps kids cross the road safely and cars turning into Peters Road and Old Warburton Highway,” he said.

Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence met with Seville residents to discuss the future of the stretch of road on 10 April.

“I will be calling on the Minister for Roads requesting urgent action to install dedicated turning lanes and traffic islands on Warburton Highway at Peters Road and Sunnyside Road,” she said.

A VicRoads statement to the Mail said investigations into the need for improvements on Warburton Highway in Seville East were ongoing, and VicRoads would determine the need for intersection improvements as part of the fatality investigation.

Local residents have taken action by creating a petition, which has received more than 1000 signatures and counting.

Help shape Warby

These are the questions that Yarra Ranges Council is asking residents.

With various major projects expected to be undertaken into the future, Yarra Ranges Council is ensuring that the atmosphere of the unique country town is not lost.

Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging Warburton residents to share their ideas for the future of the town to help create a Warburton Place Plan. The plan will be a document that will guide Council's directions and actions in the area over the next 20 years, ensuring that the town's future matches the values and culture of the area.

YRC Creative Communities Manager Greg Box, spoke to the Mail about the importance of retaining the esoteric culture that exists in Warburton.

"The place plan is really a new way of look-

Help shape the future of Warburton. 183592 ing at a location as a holistic place, and is not just about a road or car park that needs to fixed but more about everyone's experiences in that place," Mr Box said.

"With the mountain bike project emerging in that part of the world ... it is a single project that will make change and will affect other parts of that township.

"The place plan is incredibly mindful of those projects but make sure that the whole

place is not just shaped by those things ... we take a little bit of a wider look.

Mr Box said that most importantly, the Place Plan is a way for the community to be involved in designing a blueprint for improving their town.

"It is a way for council and the community to work together and channel resources to improve a towns liveability," he said.

"The Plan will look at what is the essential culture of the place ... Warburton has a very interesting culture, and you don't want to lose that."

Staff are stationed at the Warburton Arts Centre from 10am-4pm on Tuesdays in April, and can chat to residents about the place plan and collect any ideas they might have for Warburton's future.

A workshop will also be held at the Arts Centre, Warburton this Sunday afternoon from 2-4.30pm.

Burn-offs in Upper Yarra under control

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges Council has provided an update on planned burn offs in the Upper Yarra region through a community newsletter.

The community newsletter has advised that Fire 51 Cambarville Fire Rd 4 is 'under control 2', which means the perimeter is secure and no breakaways are expected.

The fire burnt an area of 2,600 hectares and patrolling remains in place.

Fire 53 Mt Boobyalla Walking Track is 'safe' with no further suppression or patrolling required.

Fire 54 O'Shannassy Catchment Rd 16 is also 'under control 2'.

Recovery is now the focus and is being coordinated by Yarra Ranges Council.

Ten kilometres of the Warburton-Woods Point Road, between Stream Rd, Reefton and Cumberland Junction, Cambarville has been closed due to fire related damage.

VicRoads and their contractors have been working to re-open the road for the Easter period and have now completed hazardous tree removal and 90 per cent of road resurfacing, priority guide post replacement, guard rail replacement and drainage works.

VicRoads aims to open the road by the Easter weekend with speed restrictions in place.

The newsletter states that if weather permits, it is expected the road will operate normally from Friday the 26 April.

Staff from DELWP, Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria and a number of contractors, are working together to undertake rehabilitation works on fire affected public land.

Interim drainage works have been completed on all control lines constructed as part of the fire suppression effort.

Operation Nexus A Mount Evelyn man lost his licence for the best part of a year after he was allegedly caught driving more than two times the legal alcohol limit on 20 April.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol officers were conducting roadside breath tests on Maroondah Highway, Coldstream, when they intercepted a green Land Rover Discovery about 9.55am.

The 56-year-old driver tested positive to a preliminary breath test and was taken back to the police station for an evidentiary breath test, where he returned an alleged reading of 0.117 per cent.

The man lost his licence for 11 months, and his vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1017.10.

He is expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving offences.

The impound was part of Operation Nexus, a five-day high-visibility road policing operation over the Easter long weekend.

The state-wide operation focused on country road users, speed, impaired drivers, seatbelts, on and off-road motorcycles, fatigue due to long distance travel, and driver distraction through mobile technology and navigation devices.

Search for missing man Police are continuing to appeal for public help to find missing Don Valley man Edward Fitzpatrick.

The 42-year-old left Maroondah Hospital at 1.10pm on Tuesday 9 April and was last seen a short time later near Ringwood East Railway Station.

He has not been seen or made contact with family since.

Edward is described as Caucasian in appearance and 183 centimetres tall with a thin build, tanned skin and sandy-coloured thinning hair.

He is believed to be travelling on public transport.

Police and family have concerns for his welfare due to medical conditions that require medication.

He is known to frequent the Wandin, Seville, Yarra Junction and Ringwood areas.

Anyone who sees Edward or has information on his whereabouts should call Ringwood Police Station on 9871 3000.

Track bike stolen

Works will include the construction of silt fencing, debris traps, rock armouring and drainage, with an emphasis on stream and gully crossings on roads and pipes.

Longer term recovery works in the fire affected area will consider management of threatened species and monitoring impacts on catchment water quality, vegetation classes and forest production.

Thieves stole a $5000 motorbike stolen from the back of a ute during just a 15-minute window.

At 8am on 20 April, the victim parked his vehicle in the Healesville Coles car park before entering the bakery.

He returned at 8.15am to find the bike had been taken.

The bike was a men’s racing road bike and was white in colour.

Women on the home front

By Tony Smith, Casey Mp Over the centenary of Anzac, many local primary school students have participated in my Anzac Essay competition.

This year I chose the topic of Women on the Home Front.

One hundred and eighty one students at 15 schools participated, and were judged by a committee of locals.

The overall winner and those whose essays were judged highly commended will be announced tomorrow.

I chose to focus on the role of women as we have previously, naturally, focussed on the 100th anniversary of each battle, and now is a good time to reflect on the significant role Australian women played back here in Australia during the war.

Federal Member for Casey On the home front women were critical to the war effort and their efforts transformed Australia for the better.

The Red Cross was established in Australia just days after the outbreak of war.

In Lilydale, Nellie Melba was elected the first president at a meeting at the Athenaeum Hall.

Across the nation, women raised funds, produced supplies for the diggers and, critically, raised morale in the darkest days of a bloody war they feared would never end.

They raised families, ran farms, lost husbands, sons, brothers, brothers-in-law and cousins, and as they grieved they kept up the fight here in Australia to do all they could to bring about victory as soon as possible.

The Governor-General’s wife, Lady Munro Ferguson, who established the Australian Red Cross transformed Government House here in Melbourne into a work and dispatch station for volunteer women.

Their efforts fostered and solidified volunteerism in Australia, a spirit of service that continues to benefit us today.

Prime Minister Billy Hughes was in England when the armistice was signed.

On 13 November, Acting Prime Minister William Watt rose in the House of Representatives, then still sitting in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, and read a message from the King marking the end of hostilities.

After praising the Anzacs, Watt delivered a moving tribute to the women of Australia and the “courage, fortitude and self-sacrifice” they had displayed over the previous four years.

They were, Watt said, “worthy mothers, wives and sisters of the great Anzac breed” deserving of recognition for “their splendid courage and work” as the fighting raged.

It was a fine and fitting acknowledgment of the women who had served their country with quiet heroism during the war.

It’s fitting a century on that we remember them.

By Jed Lanyon A public art project that marks the historical boundary of Coranderrk Aboriginal Station, one of Australia's most significant sites, was officially opened to the public on Monday 15 April.

Untitled (seven monuments) has been created by Senior Wurundjeri Elder, Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO, Sydney-based Wiradjuri-Kamilaroi artist, Jonathan Jones and Melbourne-based Celtic-Australian artist, Tom Nicholson.

Working with local landowners, historians and local and state government agencies, seven monuments have been installed throughout the region of present day Healesville to delineate the boundaries of Coranderrk Aboriginal Station when it was at its largest, in 1866, at some 4,850 acres.

Each marker comprises an upturned flagpole and brick footing, with a plaque on each face, surrounded by Coranderrk (Christmas bush).

Established by Wurundjeri people and other displaced Aboriginal people in 1863, Coranderrk Aboriginal Station quickly became both a thriving economic community and a powerful base for Aboriginal self-organisation and political advocacy.

Coranderrk was progressively sub-divided by the Victorian Government, ultimately leading to the dispersal and forced removal of the community to Lake Tyers in 1924, leaving only a handful of determined elders.

Today Coranderrk continues to be an important living place for Wurundjeri and for the wider Aboriginal community. untitled (seven monuments) invites the public to move between these markers to learn about Coranderrk's extraordinary history and traverse Wurundjeri country.

Wandin, Jonathan Jones and Tom Nicholson, titled Future Memorials, which was presented at the museum in 2013-14.

"Future Memorials explored the effects of colonialism and sought new ways to understand and renew the relationship between these histories and the present," she said.

"As part of that exhibition, Tom Nicholson installed a work titled Towards a monument to Batman's Treaty, 2008-13, comprising the exact number of bricks required to construct Melbourne's first chimney, built for John Batman (1801-1839) by William Buckley (1776 -1856)."

"Some of these bricks, which were collected from citizens in and around Healesville, now form part of the brick footing of each of the seven monuments in this project," said Ms Lynn.

The other large-scale installation featured in Future Memorials was untitled (shield design) by Jonathan Jones in consultation with Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin, which presented a corridor of yellow light in the Museum's Vista Walk gallery.

The conceptual basis for the design of this work was the wooden parrying shield made by William Barak in 1897 which features a distinctive carved diamond pattern.

The colour of the light refers to Barak's and his father's prediction of their own death who both stated that they would pass when the muyan (wattle) bloomed.

Like a shield, Ngurungaeta (cultural leader) Barak, was steadfast in his campaign for the rights and protection of his people, promoting the strength and legitimacy of his community at Coranderrk, while maintaining their cultural heritage. untitled (seven monuments) continues the artists' meditation on the nature of the monument itself, as a tradition closely linked to colonialism, and on the possibilities of new kinds of public art making.

Yarra Ranges residents can share their lived experiences, views and ideas to improve Victoria's mental health system.

On Wednesday 17 April, the Royal Commission into Victoria's mental health system opened an online portal to allow people to share written submission, images, audio or video content.

The commission is seeking input from those living with mental illness, caring for a loved one, working in the sector or with a general interest in mental health.

Contributions can be brief comments or longer, more formal submissions.

The submission process takes users through a series of questions on reducing stigma and discrimination, preventing suicide, early intervention and how people access and experience treatment and support.

The commission wants to create a future mental health system that meets the needs of all Victorians and every contribution will inform the Royal Commission's reports.

The commission is also running community consultation sessions around rural, regional and metropolitan locations during April and May. Penny Armytage is leading the Royal Commission as chair with support from commissioners Professor Bernadette McSherry, Professor Allan Fels AO and Dr Alex Cockram.

"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the way we deal with mental health in Victoria," she said.

"Through the first consultation sessions, we have already experienced the genuine goodwill felt towards the Royal Commission and the incredible willingness of people to share their experiences and insights, even when this can bring up painful memories."

The Royal Commission will deliver its interim report in November this year, with the final report delivered in October 2020.

Last week we had the vegans causing mayhem in Melbourne and in rural areas.

It was soon reported that 40 will be charged and the police presence would need to be paid for. Now for the double standard: yesterday (10 April) another protest was held in Melbourne causing great inconvenience to the public.

It was very obvious that the bloody unions had organised it and to make matters worse, the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was in

Warburton road is causing chaos

By Jed Lanyon Shopkeepers in Warburton have expressed their frustrations regarding the lack of an appropriate turning circle on Thomas Avenue behind shops on the Warburton Highway.

The area in question is a laneway that ends behind Treehouse Nature and Healing, forcing drivers to make a three-point turn alongside parked cars, businesses and pedestrians.

The shopkeepers have requested the installation of a proper turning circle along the corner of Thomas Avenue or a roundabout, which would lead to the removal of a grassed area alongside the road.

A fence running along the back of one of the local businesses was damaged recently by a vehicle that failed to correctly use the current turning bay, that is being labelled inadequate.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson responded to the issue.

"Yarra Ranges Council has received a number of complaints from a business regarding parking, traffic and signage at the end of Thomas Avenue in Warburton," he said.

"These issues center around use of a private driveway for turning around and parking, and questions about the turning area at the end of the avenue.

"We understand that parking on private property can be frustrating, as a result of our conversations with the business owners, council will be installing 'No Stopping' parking restrictions in the area, to reinforce the use of the turning area and discourage improper parking," Mr Stevenson said.

moved to widen the turning area and turn it into a roundabout for vehicles.

"The Thomas Avenue area's landscaping followed significant consultation with local residents and business owners at the time, so council will first look at managing traffic with the existing layout, before considering any

"The issues raised will also be recorded as part of the current discussion for the Warburton Place Plan, which will be a guiding document for council over the next 20 years."

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has deployed incident air monitoring to help communities understand and respond to potential smoke in areas that are experiencing planned burn offs.

Based on smoke modelling conducted by EPA scientists, air monitoring equipment has been deployed to Warburton and Healesville.

Modelling also shows it is possible there will be smoke impacts across the Yarra Ranges.

The EPA advises that there will be fires in other parts of Victoria and people should remain vigilant. If you can smell smoke, that's the time to take any health measures, especially if your household includes people with pre-existing conditions (including asthma), children, pregnant women or older people.

People with existing heart or lung conditions (including asthma) should follow the treatment plan advised by their doctor.

Forest Fire Management Victoria and Parks Victoria undertake planned burning across Victoria, particularly on public land such as forests.

Planned burning involves lighting fires under carefully managed conditions to reduce the risk of bushfire.

Forest Fire Management Victoria undertakes predictive modelling of any potential smoke impacts and can request that EPA deploy its incident response air monitoring equipment.

Data collected by incident air monitors provides useful information about the impacts of a pollution event and is used to make decisions about what agencies do next.

with David Cloke former Australian Rules Footballer

What is something people don't know about you?

"Well, when I first went down to play football at Richmond, back as a 16-year-old, I got told to go away because I was too small. I was lucky though because I was a late grower, and grew about 8 inches in nine months as a 16-year-old kid.

What is your most memorable moment in football?

Playing in premierships is always pretty special. I was lucky enough to play in the 1974 and 1980 premierships on the winning side for Richmond. Being able to be involved in those and winning those grand finals, they're great memories.

Do you have a stand-out game?

In the 1980 premiership I kicked six goals in the grand final which was pretty special. Then, in my last game playing Carlton at the MCG I kicked eight goals in my last game and retired.

So that was a really great way to retire and will always be a highlight of my careers.

What would your final meal be?

Probably some crays. Yeah, a nice feed of crayfish would be nice.

What is youf favourite TV show?

I like watching the big bang theory and a lot of the shows on the discovery channel.

Do you enjoy other sports, apart from football?

I enjoy all sports and always have, I grew up playing cricket and football and from a really young age I've always been involved.

What keep your passion for footy alive.

It's always been in my life. I played and coached for over 20 years and then my boys came through playing it and it went on another 17 years so there's a good 40 years odd involvement and I love the sport, the people and I still go to matches today.

How have you found today's Warburton Golf day?

It's been a great day today, I didn't play cause I'm not much of a golfer but I've met a lot of new people today, and in the end we are all working for one thing - to raise a bit of money for a great cause, the variety bash

Fashion for a fraction

By Jed Lanyon The women of the Inner Wheel Club of Wandin will present their annual fashion parade at the Wandin North Hall on Friday 10 May at 7.30pm.

For 20 years the Inner Wheel Club has raised funds for the national project to cord blood research.

Jenny’s Shoppe in Monbulk has supported the Wandin Inner Wheel Club by providing a great range of fashion wear for the parades over the many years.

The contributions from the fashion parade have assisted in the national total of over two million dollars, which has led to 48 grants being awarded for research projects.

Secretary of Wandin’s Inner Wheel Club Pauline Barrett said she is looking forward to the annual event.

“This is our twentieth year of doing the fashion parade ... I see it as a lot of hard and fun work for a good reward at the end. There is some satisfaction of knowing what we have

achieved,” she said.

Ms Barrett estimates that the Inner Wheel Club has raised 40-50 thousand dollars in that time.

Ms Barrett said that she hopes this year’s fashion parade can help raise upwards of $5000.

Cord blood research is the national project for Inner Wheel Australia.

CellCare state that cord blood and cord tissue are rich in powerful stem cells and can only be collected at birth for potential future use.

Stem cells can be used now for medical treatments, and there is an expanding range of new therapies being researched that anticipate using cord blood and tissue in the future.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary is an initially-clunky but overall chilling and gruesome horror film.

After moving to rural Maine, Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) discovers a secluded forest region that can raise the dead.

Pet Sematary has a rocky start due to some very poor editing.

The first act contains several jarring cuts that skip too much time and space, along with some awkward dialogue.

But the film's technique stabilises, ironically, as the Creed family's situation grows more dire.

Pet Sematary takes time to establish the forest's macabre qualities and the close, loving bonds within the Creed family.

When tragedy strikes the Creeds, our emotional investment in this family makes the grieving Louis's use of the forest cemetery feel all the more plausible.

Jete Laurence displays phenomenal range and conviction as Louis's daughter Ellie, portraying a clever, sweet girl and her snide, aggressive reanimated self.

The plot's final act has a taut, unnerving escalation, as Louis is punished for his hubris and his family are hunted by manifestations of their repressed grief.

Horror, as a genre, is almost unique in its capacity for presenting calm situations breaking down in logical but shocking ways, and Pet Sematary succeeds handsomely - or gruesomely - in this function.

Despite an inept start, Pet Sematary is a visceral, well-paced horror film.

How voting's changed In the lead-up to the federal election, local historian Anthony McAleer shared some history about voting in the region 100 years ago.

It turns out this little rural patch changed the shape of Australian politics.

The electoral district was Flinders, not Casey, and in early 1918 a by-election was called when member Sir William Irvine resigned to become Chief Justice of Victoria.

"Political campaigning for the seat then took place locally between candidates from the Labor and Nationalists Parties and, for the very first time in this district, from the Country Party," Mr McAleer said.

"This new party had been formed by various farmers' unions to further rural interests and to get country folk a louder voice in parliament."

The district was considered rural so the Nationalists, then in government, were concerned the Country Party might split the con-

servative vote in the seat.

"They were also very keen to get into parliament their candidate, Stanley Melbourne Bruce, a former officer in the British army who had been awarded the Military Cross at Gallipoli and had returned home to Melbourne after being wounded in the war," Mr McAleer said.

So the parties did a deal and the Country Party withdrew their candidate.

In return, the Nationalist Government introduced the preferential voting system.

Bruce won the seat - and became Prime Minister in 1923 - and preferential voting has been in place ever since.

Kluger's on-road and off-road performance and safety features also include hill-start assist and trailer sway control with AWD variants offering downhill assist control.

In Australia, Kluger has passed 170,000 sales including record sales last year of 14,743 vehicles, making it the best-selling 2WD/AWD vehicle in the large SUV segment.

The new-generation Kluger will be launched first in the United States where it is known as Highlander.

A Yarra Junction legend

By Jed Lanyon Yarra Junction Bowling Club is mourning the death of a club legend.

Joy Primrose Britton, aged 94, passed away peacefully on 10 April.

Born on February 10 1925, Joy was a wellknown and loved sporting identity within the Yarra Valley.

She played tennis and badminton for Seville, as well as golf, but she starred at lawn bowls.

Joy joined the Yarra Junction Bowling club in the 1960s and from 1969 to 2005 she was the club champion in 29 out of 36 years.

She had the honour of captaining the Yarra Junction team in 1989 when it won the state four.

Joy represented Victoria on seven occasions and in 1998 was the Victorian Country Champion and the state singles runner-up.

She served as the president and was inducted as a life member of the Yarra Junction Bowling Club in 1991.

Joy was a great friend to many members and was respected as a great bowler, leader and person.

She loved to nurture new members to the club and her leadership values were treasured as a coach.

Joy worked with her husband on their orchard in Seville.

She was the mother to three children, 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Joy’s funeral service was held at the Heritage Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock on Wednesday 17 April.

Travis Carroll (10) came in as the winner for the day with a stableford score of 40 points.

He also won his match play event against Travis Ferris (16) on the 18th hole.

Tom Carroll (14) came in second with 38 points on a countback with Travis Ferris third.

Nearest the pins on the par-three holes went to Tom Carroll, Travis Ferris, Karl Hradsky and Rob Duke.

The Warburton Golf Club's Wednesday 17 April competition was The Resurrection Cup. The "crazy" event was the brainchild of past member David Waters.

Waters is not keeping the best of health at the moment, so it was wonderful to see him at the club and playing in his own Easter event.

Unfortunately, he didn't feature among the winners.

The winning three-person team was made up of Tex Van Der Kooi, Clint Smallman and Trevor Porter, who amassed a huge score more than 40,000 points.

The runner-up team was Happy Gilmore, Des Ray and Neil Leckenby, who could only reach 34,000-odd points.

Nearest the pin winners were Ms Nursey on the third, Heather Judkins on the fifth, Mark Gunther on the ninth and Ossie McClay on the 15th.

Van Der Kooi had the day's best score of 39 points.

In the Saturday 20 April stableford competition, Sean Kennedy was no Easter bunny.
