MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It's not often I go on an editorial rant but the invasion of Carey Brothers' abattoir by animal activists on Monday of this week has our community rightfully riled up (see story next page). They also wilfully harassed Freestone dairy farmer Phil Christensen and unsettled his precious cows and calves with their misguided actions. Some on social media have criticised the local police for not charging these idiots, but it needs to be understood that at time of printing this week no complaint had been laid by Carey Brothers. But even if a complaint had been made police would have had next to no power to act, as the Queensland Government is yet to tighten up the legislation around this kind of activity. Bio-terrorism - that's my term - is a relatively new phenomenon and as usual our politicians and our laws are miles behind an emerging trend. There needs to be some meaningful deterrence to prevent this activity from getting out of control. My fear is that someone is going to get hurt the longer it is allowed to go unchecked. I'd hate to see a local farmer lose their mind completely - but perhaps understandably - and then be the one who is behind bars for stepping in in the heat of the moment to protect their business. RESPONSE TO ABATTOIR INVASION BY JEREMY SOLLARS "It's a conspiracy to disrupt agriculture in Australia." That's how Greg Carey described the invasion of his Yangan abattoir by animal rights activists in the early hours of Monday of this week as part of a national day of "vegan action" during which other abattoirs in regional Australia were targeted, along with peak hour commute times in capital cities. More than 100 activists travelled in a convoy of vehicles to descend on the Yangan plant, with 20 of them gaining access inside and chaining themselves to equipment, forcing staff on site to call the police and enter into negotiations around 3.30am, just as operations were commencing for the day. Greg himself was on holidays in north Queensland at the time and was full of praise for his staff whom he said handled the situation extremely well in his absence. With police in Queensland hamstrung by a lack of enforcement options due to inaction over vegan activism by the Palaszczuk Government abattoir staff agreed to hand over three of Carey Brothers' own lambs to the protesters to simply get them to leave the premises just after 5.30am, so work could get under way as normal. "Monday is always a huge day for us and at the time it was really just a matter of getting those people out of there," Greg told the Free Times this week. "These are people who have nothing

better to do with their time than try to shut down Australian agriculture. "There are thousands of people affected by this - people who go to work every day and families that work hard to feed Australia. "What I would like to do is thank all the local people who have supported us on social media through this - we've been amazed by the support we've received and we really do appreciate it." At time of printing of the Free Times this week Greg Carey was seeking legal advice about making a formal complaint to police, an action not taken on Monday due to his being on leave and the need to ensure normal operation of the abattoir once the activists had finally been removed. He was also in talks with the Australian Meat Industry Council and the Queensland Police Stock Squad about next steps in responding to the incident. It is understood animal activists previously broke into the Yangan abattoir and acquired footage of slaughtering operations. Also harassed by the same group of activists early on Monday morning was Freestone dairy farmer Phil Christensen, who confronted them on the boundary of his Freestone Road property around 6.30am, while retrieving a number of young heifer calves which had strayed onto the road. "The calves went running towards them (the activists) because they're used to being hand-fed," Phil said. "I said 'You're not stealing my cattle

today' or words to that effect. "One of the calves baulked and ran into a fence and I told them to make sure they got footage of that. "A few of them started swearing at me and got quite abusive - we called the police and that's when they bolted. "It was all over pretty quickly." Queensland LNP opposition leader Deb Frecklington and local state MP for Southern Downs James Lister this week slammed the Palaszczuk Government for stating police could hand out on-the-spot fines to animal activists engaged in 'farm invasions' without making the necessary legislative changes. Ms Frecklington and Mr Lister and federal Maranoa MP and agriculture minister David Littleproud this week called on the state government to introduce hefty penalties as a deterrent to farm invasion, describing such action as a combination of breaking and entering, trespass and breaching of biosecurity. "This is the second time in two weeks that a fine family business in our electorate has been terrorised and it's just not good enough," James Lister said, referring to the previous invasion of a Millmerran feedlot and dairy. "Greg and Mark Carey run a great business, employing people, paying taxes, and feeding us. "These protesters have no right to do what they've done and they need to be gaoled. "I was thrown out of parliament

Freestone dairy farmers the Christensen family were also harassed on Monday morning. demanding that the Palaczszuk government throw the book at these people, and so what is their response? "Wishy-washy on-the-spot fines, which are laughed at by the protesters. "It's just not good enough. "I demand that Annastacia Palaczszuk make prison time the punishment for property-invading protesters. "Annastacia Palaczszuk must show us that protecting our primary industries is more important to her than keeping green preferences in South Brisbane." · For online updates on the response to this weeks' vegan activist incidents locally visit www.freetimes.com.au ●

TARGET PLANNING TO CLOSE STORES IN COUNTRY NSW BY JEREMY SOLLARS Kmart Australia has refused to categorically rule out the closure of the Target Country outlet in Warwick, after announcing a number of Target stores in regional New South Wales will be closed in the near future. Mayors from the NSW shires of Tenterfield, Temora, Eurobodalla and Gilgandra met with Target representatives in Sydney last week to plead with the company to not close down its stores in their respective communities. A Target spokeswoman issued the following statement after the Free Times this week asked about the future of its Target Country outlet in Warwick "It is business as usual for Target, and all stakeholders will be communicated with well in advance of any planned change to Target's store network," the spokeswoman said. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with the communities where we operate and remain committed to providing our customers quality fashion and basics at low prices. "As always, and with great respect, our team members will be communicated with first if there are any planned changes to our stores." The statement followed the announcement last week by Woolworths Group that it plans to close down Warwick's BIG W Distribution Centre in 2023 - with the loss of 183 jobs - and

From left - Cr Rick Firman, Mayor of Temora Shire, Cr Peter Petty, Mayor of Tenterfield Shire, Cr Liz Innes, Mayor of Eurobodalla Shire and Cr Doug Batten, Mayor of Gilgandra Shire. its Monarto Distribution Centre in South Australia in 2021. Woolworths has also foreshadowed the closure of up to 30 BIG W stores nationwide over the next three years but has refused to give out details of specific locations. A company spokesman told the Free Times last week the BIG W outlet in Warwick is a "profitable" store. ●

MAYORS' PLEA TO TARGET Tenterfield Shire Mayor Petty said last week's meeting with Target "focused on communicating the importance of the Target stores in the community, but also looked at possibilities of different business models Target may be able to explore with

community support". "It's more than just a retail shop for many communities - to many towns Target is the only department store and is an essential service for rural and regional communities" Cr Petty said. "The closure of Target stores will impact not only the towns they are in but the broader retail catchment areas, as it is not uncommon for shoppers to travel hundreds of kilometres just to shop with Target. "These stores are just so important to communities and the other retail businesses and services that benefit from the drawing power of Target. Cr Petty gave credit to Target Australia for meeting with the council representatives

and holding a frank and open discussion. "I appreciate the time and commitment of Target representatives, led by Steven Mann, Head of Corporate Affairs, Kmart Group (Kmart Australia and Target Australia) to meet with the mayors," he said. "It is important they understand the passion communities have to see Target remain open in their towns." Cr Petty said during the meeting options for alternative business models were openly discussed and the Target contingent agreed to take away the concepts and consider continuing further dialogue to explore ways to keep the stores open. "Target representatives were noncommittal to outcomes of their consideration of the proposals they were presented and were conscious of not setting false expectations that identified stores won't close as planned," he said. "They have agreed to consider the ideas and respond to the councils in a timely manner." While many large retail chains blame online shopping for the closure of "bricks and mortar" stores, online retail only accounts for about nine per cent of all retail sales in Australia each year, according to the New South Wales Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber says on a global scale Australia remains "at the forefront of bricks and mortar retail", only accounting for 0.01 per cent of all online sales worldwide. ●

COVER STORY Tom Hardy is “prepping for another world record attempt in Adelaide in June.

ALL POWER TO TOM BY JEREMY SOLLARS

D

espite professional powerlifting requiring something akin to superhuman strength, Tom Hardy is adamant that it's also a "head

game". At the age of just 22 the Warwick lad is taking the power-lifting world by storm and is currently the Junior 110 kilogram Squat World Record holder. Tom describes power-lifting as a "niche" sport to which he was introduced by a friend at the age of 16, and he's not looked back. He competes in two to three major competitions each year and his "prep" ahead of them involves up to 16 or 17 weeks of intense strength training, with around 16 to 20 hours a week in the gym.

Right now he's "prepping" for the open nationals in Adelaide in June, where he hopes to break his third squat world record of a dizzying 340.5 kilos. The nationals will come off the back of his latest accomplishment - first place at the open state championships in March, with state placings, while sweet, not counting towards international records. Tom is one of those fortunate people whose main passion in life also happens to be their job - and you can find him every other day down at DY Gym on Fitzroy Street, which he manages. Power-lifting consists of three distinct disciplines - the squat, the bench-press (lying prone on the bench and raising the weights vertically above you) and the deadlift, from the classic standing position where the barbell is lifted to hip-level. It's a totally different dynamic and

mindset to bodybuilding, which is all about the aesthetics of the body as opposed to sheer strength. And while physical strength is obviously central to the sport of power-lifting, Tom says a lot of it is mind over matter. "It's definitely a head game - powerlifting is good for mind and body," he told the Free Times. "I just like being as strong as I can possibly be, but it's also about having a strong frame of mind. "You have to stay positive and push away those negative thoughts. "I draw a lot of my mental strength from my family and friends - I like to surround myself with positive people. "Family really is everything to me." Tom is the fourth youngest member of the Hardy family - and the youngest of the three boys - which consists of dad Greg and

mum Rosa and siblings Steven, Matthew, Kate, Grace and Bridget. Greg is well-known locally for his years of service to the area as a paramedic, while Rosa works in media sales. And in case you're wondering, nowretired Greg, who had a very close brush with cancer back in 2014-2015, is as good as gold. Tom said his parents and all his siblings are extremely supportive of his power-lifting career and they regularly travel with him to competitions in a show of solid family support. But he admits Hardy senior and his mother were a little nervous in the early days about injuries, particularly after Tom tore his meniscus - the cartilage which acts as a shock absorber in the knee between the shinbone and thighbone - which required surgical repair.

"Yes there is a risk of injury, things like broken backs and knees," Tom said. "But it's like anything, as you keep improving your technique and nail it the risk becomes a lot less," Tom said. "There are so many technical cues in the sport that you need to always keep working on and tweaking your weaknesses." Back in his Assumption College days Tom was a hard-working forward for his beloved Collegians Junior Rugby League club before catching the strength-training bug, but he says he "loved my footy". But with power-lifting now his major focus he's eyeing off a lengthy trip to the USA, with the sport a little like professional rodeo in that the big money and sponsorships are in the States. "I'm not planning on living over there but I'd like to travel around for a while and do some of the big comps," he said. "But it is possible to make basically a fulltime career out of power-lifting in Australia if you combine it with, say, personal training." Tom's coach is Gold Coast-based Thomas Lilley - recognised as one of Australia's best - and the pair get together once or twice a month and interact on social media in between times. He describes his former coach, Frank Harmon, as his "mentor" and amazingly Frank is still competing professionally albeit in just the bench-press - at the age of 69. "The sport does have a pretty long lifespan - you can get guys competing in their 80s - but your peak time is between the ages of about 25 and 45," Tom said. And with nutrition playing a vital role in the success of the professional power-lifting, Tom's body requires plenty of fuel to enable him to compete at optimum level. "Lots of carbs, lots of protein," he laughs. "We can get away with a lot more than the bodybuilders, we need a certain amount of fats in the diet. "Breakfast might be two pieces of

REVIEW WAS ‘A WASTE OF MONEY’ BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Granite Belt Community Association (GBCA) has called on Mayor Tracy Dobie to "come clean" on the cost to Southern Downs ratepayers of what is has termed the council's "so-called independent review of de-amalgamation". GBCA vice president Amanda Harrold this week said the review was "a waste of money, given that the Queensland Government is currently conducting its own study of the de- amalgamation proposal". "Workshops held in Stanthorpe and Warwick last week, conducted by two Brisbane-based consultants, appeared to be little more than an attempt to sow uncertainty and fear about deamalgamation," Mrs Harrold said. "The information the 'independent' consultants presented was slanted towards the council's arguments against deamalgamation and several key points they stressed about the Granite Belt's proposal were plain wrong. "Mayor Dobie and the council should have waited for Queensland Treasury Corporation to finish its assessment for the State Government before taking any further actions. "The minister told the council an additional review would be pointless. "How much has this cost ratepayers?" Mrs Harrold questioned the council's motives for wasting many thousands of ratepayer dollars "on what amounts to a propaganda campaign".

"It's an outrageous failure of judgement and ratepayers deserve to know how much this pointless exercise cost," she said. "The Granite Belt Community Association has disputed many of the council's assumptions about the costs of de-amalgamation, yet the same assumptions were repeated and pressed by the 'independent' consultants. "Council's contention that Southern Downs doesn't have 'cash reserves' to cover de-amalgamation is dishonest. "GBCA consultant David Spearritt confirms that the council's audited cash and reserves balance at June 2018 was $50.3 million, with less than half of that committed to staffing costs and recommended working capital for the next 10 years. "Against the $50.3 million reserves the council has $20 million debt. "On any view, after an equitable division of cash reserves there would be ample cash for the new Granite Belt Council to cover de-amalgamation costs. "The Granite Belt's study, carried out by Mr Spearritt, calculated implementation costs to be under $1 million. "Nevertheless, the costings we submitted were conservative and allowed $4 million, benchmarked on the similar-sized Douglas Shire's actual de-amalgamation cost." Mrs Harrold said the Council's consultants claimed that the GBCA's submission on de-amalgamation did not include costs of

redundancies and recruitment. "While Mr Spearritt doesn't believe redundancies will be necessary, the $4 million budgeted would amply cover the cost," Mrs Harrold said. "When Noosa de-amalgamated - with a population three times more than the Granite Belt - the government estimated it would cost $11 million. "The actual figure turned out to be $4.35 million and the new Council didn't even raise rates to cover the cost of deamalgamation. "The council should stop scaremongering. "They are taking the people of Warwick and the Granite Belt for fools." The council has previously stated that the cost of the external consultants' review of the GBCA de-amalgamation business case could be in the vicinity of $40,000. COUNCIL RESPONSE ... The Free Times this week asked the council for details of the final cost of the consultants are received the following response "Southern Downs Regional Council has a responsibility to engage with the community on matters of significant policy, impact or change. "To that end, Council provided the community with the space, time and opportunity to take part in two independently facilitated information sessions last week. "Council held the two information

sessions in good faith to engage with, listen and understand the views of local residents in regards to the important issue of the Granite Belt Community Association's proposal for de-amalgamation. "For many residents, these information sessions provided them with their first opportunity to engage with Council on the GBCA proposal. "The amount SDRC paid to Grassroots Consultancy to prepare their report and facilitate the information sessions is commercial in confidence. "SDRC will continue to follow the process as set out by the Minister for Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs for the GBCA proposal." NEXT STEPS ... Queensland Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe is awaiting a review of the GBCA business case by his own department and by the Queensland Treasury Corporation. He has previously said if deamalgamation of Warwick and Stanthorpe can be shown to be financially viable to the government's satisfaction the matter would be put to a region-wide vote but has given no timeframe for that process. Southern Downs councillors are expected to take a formal vote on their support or otherwise for de-amalgamation at their monthly general meeting on Tuesday 30 April at the Warwick chambers. SECOND RALLY ... The Granite Belt Community Association will hold its second public rally on deamalgamation on Sunday 28 April, to update the community on where the campaign is at. The rally will be held at C F White Oval, Harris Street, 11am for an 11.30am start. ALLEGED INCIDENT ... Deputy Mayor Jo McNally says she has no recollection of an incident alleged to have taken place at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre after the Southern Downs Regional Council's de-amalgamation community workshop on the evening of last Monday 1 April. It has been alleged to the Free Times by persons who attended the workshop that shortly after the workshop ended and as people were leaving the Civic Centre Cr McNally shoved or knocked into a female person who was chatting to others in a room to the side of the Civic Centre main hall. It is alleged that the person almost fell over and sustained an injury to their arm. While it is not suggested Cr McNally's alleged physical contact with the person concerned was deliberate, the Free Times has been told that Cr McNally did not acknowledge or apologise for the contact. A council spokesperson said Cr McNally "has no recollection of this incident". It is understood the individual involved intends to lodge a formal complaint with the council. ●

BI-PARTISAN SUPPORT SOUGHT FOR DAM BY JEREMY SOLLARS Stanthorpe's Emu Swamp Dam remains tantalisingly close to coming to fruition but neither the federal or state government has formally committed to funding the project to date. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack verbally committed $42 million from Canberra after visiting Stanthorpe earlier this year, following a commitment by local irrigators to contribute $26 million of their own money towards the project. Despite Mr McCormack's verbal commitment there was no specific funding announcement for Emu Swamp Dam in last week's federal budget. Project backers the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce, through their entity Emu Swamp Pty Ltd, have been lobbying the Queensland Government to support the dam, as it is the "owner" of the state's natural resources, including water. But the Queensland Government did not meet a deadline for applications to the Federal National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, the latest round of which was due last Monday 1 April, the day before the budget, and instead told the Chamber it needed more information on environmental and other issues. Submitting an application would have been formal advice of its support for Emu Swamp Dam, and the Chamber has been hoping the state government would make

"DNRME has received the detailed business case for the Emu Swamp Dam and has advised the proponent that significant further information is needed, including construction costs, operation and governance and secure water entitlements, to allow all stakeholders, including the Queensland Government, to consider the project further," Dr Lynham said, without providing a timeframe.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) says it is complying with industrial agreements relating to weekend and public holiday police shifts in the South West District. The Free Times has been told such shifts are in the process of being cut back due to a lack of government funding for police services, and understands local police districts have discretion over how weekend and public holiday shifts are allocated and funded. Warwick and Stanthorpe are part of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) South West District, which in turn comes under the Southern Region, along with the Darling Downs, Ipswich and Moreton police districts. The Free Times this week asked Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan for comment on the matter but a spokesman said "rosters are a matter for the Queensland Police Service". We were then provided with the following statement, attributed to the "South West District" "The South West Police District is complying with industrial agreements in relation to public holiday and weekend shifts worked by its staff," the statement said. "Staff are rostered as required to meet calls for service and provide

community safety." Local state MP for Southern Downs James Lister said the Palaszczuk Government had cut the Queensland Police budget by $44.6 million. "It is no wonder that stories of cutting police shifts are getting out," Mr Lister said this week. "I am concerned that fewer police on public holiday shifts puts the community at risk. "When it comes to spending priorities, public safety should come right near the top, and the government's cut to police funding indicates to me that its priorities are wrong. "I think that community and police deserve better."

FEE REQUEST REFUSED Southern Downs Regional Councillors at their March general meeting voted against a request for a reduction of town planning application fees by a local feedlot operator seeking to expand. Chris Shaw of Canning Downs South feedlot on Barlows Gate Road at Killarney is seeking council approval to expand from 2500 head or 'standard cattle units' to 12,500. Council officers calculated the application fee at $34,085, with Mr Shaw requesting it be reduced to $5300, on the basis that many of the assessment processes for new and expanding 'intensive animal industries' previously done by local councils are now done by the state government. Councillors voted against granting his request at their meeting on Wednesday 27 March but did agree to "review" the council's 'per standard cattle unit' charge

NEW RESTRICTIONS Tenterfield Shire will bring in a new Level 4.5 water restriction from next Wednesday 17 April. In a statement released this week the council said it has a Drought Management Plan in place that relies on a combination of 5 levels of water restrictions and a backup bore at Shirley Park. "With the prolonged drought impact across the whole Shire area and much of NSW, many rural properties are running out of water and are carting water for domestic and stock purposes from the Council's bulk water dispensing station," the statement said. "This additional impact on the Tenterfield town water supply is proving unsustainable and undermines water saving measures otherwise being applied under the current Level 4 Water Restrictions. •฀For฀full฀details฀of฀the฀new฀restrictions฀ visit www.tenterfield.nsw.gov.au ●

in light of Mr Shaw's request. They also voted in favour of reconsidering the matter at their April meeting, due in the last week of the month. The minutes of the meeting state that "fees must ensure appropriate cost-recovery and reflect the extent of work required to assess development applications". Council officers had earlier recommended a 25 per cent reduction in fees, down to $25,563.75, but councillors voted against that and in favour of the review and re-consideration.

TRACKS OPENED Most walking tracks and camping areas at Girraween National Park south of Stanthorpe will re-open before Easter, following the recent wildfire and water shortage issues. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) says its staff have been working hard to assess and repair the park's walking tracks and camping areas after the blaze, which started outside the park on Tuesday 12 February, impacted approximately 70 per cent of the park. The Bald Rock Creek day-use area and northern walks, including the popular Granite Arch, The Pyramid and The Junction walks, were re-opened at the end of February. Underground Creek and Dr Roberts Waterhole walking tracks were recently re-opened and the Northern Ridge remote campsite, Haydens Flat remote campsite, Castle Rock and Mount Norman walking tracks, along with the Creek and Peak shared trails, were all due to re-open on last Saturday 6 April. Castle Rock and Bald Rock Creek camping areas were also due to re-open last Saturday but the camping areas will only be operating at half-capacity due to ongoing water shortages.

The Sphinx, Turtle Rock, Haydens Ridge remote campsite and all other remote campsites on the southern side of the park, including Wallangarra Ridge, will remain closed until QPWS is confident these areas are safe. The Southern Downs Regional Council has advised Mount Norman Road has been re-opened following a safety assessment. Visitors can book their campsites online via the Queensland National Parks Booking Service. Visit www.parks. des.qld.gov.au for more information.

Community information sessions on the 2019-2020 draft SDRC budget will be held in Stanthorpe and Allora next week.

BUDGET SESSIONS The Southern Downs Regional Council is calling for community feedback on the 2019-2020 Draft Budget which it says proposes the lowest general rate rise in more than 10 years. A council statement issued late last month said general rates will increase by two per cent and SDRC plans to extend the early payment discount

THE SPIN

email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

CASEY O’CONNOR

WE’LL FAREWELL THE QUEEN OF TURF Regular Spin readers know the Spin Team are unabashed fans of the mighty Winx. It should be no surprise that we are off to visit the Queen -No, that's not Lizzie in London but Winx, Queen of the Turf at Randwick when she says farewell, appropriately in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Like 45,000 others on track we hope to witness Winx finish her career with a fairytale third consecutive win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. In racing not even a Winx win is a certainty. Fingers crossed the racing gods smile on the Queen on Saturday. Without wishing to jinx the great mare, this race has brought some mighty gallopers undone in their farewells Think Octagonal (1997); Lonhro (2004) and for those of us grey enough to remember, the Mighty Grey, Gunsynd. (My partner in spin has a theory that it's because they were all boys (Stallions) and that this girl (Mare) has proved she can do anything). One certainty, Winx retires as arguably the greatest galloper in Australian racing history. Chris Waller, Hugh Bowman and strapper Umut Odemislioglu are part of her legend in the same way Harry Telford, Jim Pike and Tommy Woodcock are entwined in Phar Lap's story. Let's hope this highly tuned equine machine whose engine purrs like no other enjoys life post racing. Living the dream in retirement as a happy, healthy, very spoilt and deliciously plump mare. What will lies ahead for a mare who as achieved so much? 'Mother of the Year perhaps'. The world or a lush paddock will be her oyster. Whatever happens on Saturday and beyond, it has been a privilege to be in the company of equine royalty, if only from a distance. GO WINXEY Casey GINGER'S GURU Clifford Park may not be Randwick and the winner of the KR Plumbing Benchmark 50 on Weetwood Day might not be in the league of Winx, but the win of Ruby Guru last Saturday was equally as excited for Stanthorpe owner Rae Gleeson. The five year old mare was bred in NZ at White Robe Lodge by Brian Anderton. The NZ racing Hall of Fame breeder and trainer sent the mare to his long time friend Neil

Rae Gleeson the excited owner of Ruby Guru is pictured in the winner's circle at Clifford Park with her mare, strapper Nick from the Michael Nolan stable and jockey Dale Smith. "Ginger" Gleeson and his wife Rae to race as a three year old in 2016. Unfortunately Ginger who loved his racing and especially Ruby Guru passed away 18 months ago. When I spoke to Rae on Tuesday morning (which incidentally would have been Ginger's birthday) she was still excited that Ruby Guru, "Ginger's girl" had won on the biggest day on the Toowoomba racing calendar. The mare who is still registered jointly in Neil and Rae's names has won races previously but this was her biggest win. Rae said that she had not been over confident before the race but Michael Nolan who trains the horse in Toowoomba expected the mare who started at $12 to run well. The entire Gleeson family, including children Mary-Jane, Jamie, Michael and Rachael who made the trip from Biloela were on deck to cheer the mare home. No doubt Ginger was also watching the race unfold and perhaps there was a heavenly hand in the win. A BIT OF EVERYTHING IN NRL The NRL competition is only four rounds and already there has been an equal share

of incredible performances and dreadful games and cheap shots. Many tipsters were sunk on the boot of golden point field goals last week. What we are in for in Round five - more upsets I suspect. Casey's tips: Broncos (surely they have to improve); likewise the Titans (Team Spin have very different views on this selection); Storm to cause a wave of pain for the Cowboys as Cameron Smith passes Hazem El Masri's point scoring record. Bunnies and Knights to bounce back after their sudden death losses; Doggies despite injury concerns (The Dragons surely played their last get of goal free card) and the Raiders at home. COWBOYS RIDING HIGH The Warwick Cowboys are riding high in the saddle after three rounds and lead the TRL Hutchies Builders A Grade premiership. It is only early doors but the Cowboys impressive form continued when they hosted Oakey and scored a 34-12 win at Fr Ranger Oval. At the end of the first half the Cowboys held a 16-6 lead. The Cowboys scored the opening two tries before Oakey hit back when Dylan Haiijer scored. Harry Sullivan's form has been excellent in the opening

rounds and he scored the Cowboys third try before the half time break. The second half was almost a repeat of the first with tries flowing to the Cowboys three to one as the solid Cowboy's defence stifled the Bears attack. Ben Sullivan was again one of the best on ground for the Cowboys while Coedie Tandy proved a handful for the opposition. The A Grade win wrapped up a good day for the Cowboys who also had a big wins in both the Reserve Grade (48-4) and Under 18 (60-10). The Cowboys have a bye this weekend and next play on Anzac Day when they travel to Gatton to play the Hawks. LATE TEE OFF SUITS WEBB Sporters were treated to a rare afternoon game last weekend, the Pennants game forcing a later tee off. The sleep obviously suited young gun Billy Webb who notched up a wining round and also claimed the Pro Pin. Mark Lynam was the runner up and also returned the best gross score of the round. Tony Steele and Paul Byrnes figured in the rundowns. Byrnes also held the pin shot at the 12th, and Dick Hilton the 17th. The Pin Shot on the 12th went to Paul Byrnes. Dick Hilton held the Pin at 17 and also went home with a meat tray. Shane McLaughlan was the winner of the remaining meat tray. Unfortunately for Sporters who enjoyed that later tee off last week it is bad news, this Sunday you'll be out on the fairways and greens at the usual tee off time from 7.30am- 8.00am. GOOD SCORES PAY DIVIDENDS Good scores were the feature of the Stroke event sponsored by Club Captain Richard Reardon. Mick O'Brien hit 75 off the stick for nett 64 put him three shots ahead of the field and a clear winner. David Burgess with nett 67 did best of the rest finishing runner up.
