In the past five years, there's been seven crashes that have resulted in injuries at the section of Springvale Road between Young and Lenore streets.

Two of them were classified as serious, and none involved pedestrians, according to VicRoads.

That's not to mention the bingles without injuries.

Nor the serious crashes at the notorious Springvale 'spaghetti' Junction about 200 metres north, including one in which seven were hospitalised earlier this year.

Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O'Reilly said the "overly complex" junction elevated risk.

"Council has strongly advocated for this intersection to be redesigned and reconstructed.

"I believe that this should be treated as a higher priority than the Level Crossing Removal project, due to evident safety risks."

Residents and Greater Dandenong Council have expressed concern to VicRoads after the 28 March crash.

VicRoads regional movement and safety manager Sasha Yarwood said the authority would investigate the road to determine if safety improvements were needed.

"We welcome feedback from the community for ways to improve safety on the roads they rely on every day."

Shell-shocked residents on a busy and speedy section of Springvale Road say they are just waiting for a serious accident to happen.

Mother-of-two Jessica Ferguson was seconds away from being a casualty as she collected her kerbside bins from outside a set of units near Gray Street on the afternoon of Thursday 28 March.

As she walked back up her driveway, she heard a massive crash.

Behind her, an out-of-control Ford Territory had mounted the footpath and demolished the front yard's brick retaining wall and metal fence.

Ominously, children's bikes were trapped under the debris.

The vehicle continued down the footpath towards another pedestrian, spared by the SUV coming to rest against a tree on the nature strip.

This near-miss was far from a one-off in this 70km/h zone just south of the Springvale Junction of Police and Centre roads and Princes Highway.

"It's pretty much a daily occurrence," Ms Ferguson said. "An accident waiting to happen."

The day after, there was a car crash just four doors down from the scene.

Two weeks earlier, a vehicle ferrying children to the nearby Springvale Rise Primary School collided with another car at the corner of Gray Street and Springvale Road.

One of the cars mounted the kerb and mowed down a traffic sign.

Ms Ferguson's fiancee Gavin Mandrelle has called for urgent action such as a speed limit reduction. It is what he says is a "danger zone turning into a death zone".

He sees countless speeding cars on the downhill section, veering around stopped garbage trucks and public-transport buses.

"This is a residential zone with kids and families walking down to and from school or childcare during the day.

Council: no budget love

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council says it's disappointed in the recently-announced 2019 federal budget's lack of help for refugees in the community.

The council also unveiled a 10-part wishlist for the upcoming federal election campaign, including funding for an aquatic centre, the historic Masonic Hall in Dandenong and Keysborough South Community Hub. In response to the budget, community services director Martin Fidler said the council was "disappointed" in a 60 per cent cut in Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) funding.

Greater Dandenong has led a Back Your Neighbour Campaign to restore the SRSS income support which is being withdrawn from unemployed asylum seekers and refugees in the community.

The council, which backed the I Love Kinder campaign, was also critical that federal funding for 15 hours of kindergarten per student was only extended for one more year until 2020.

SRSS and I Love Kinder are also among the council's election wish-list.

Other components include a community revitalization project to address unemployment and social issues, Glasscocks Road, Dandenong South, the Lyndhurst toxic-waste dump, funding for a Shepley Oval regional multipurpose centre and transport infrastructure.

Bruce Labor MP Julian Hill said the budget offered "nothing" for his electorate, locking in

"some of the harshest of the Liberals' cuts" to schools, hospitals and TAFE. The Government's tax cuts had "forgotten" those earning less than $40,000 a year, Mr Hill said. Its surplus had been built on $1.6 billion stripped from the NDIS. Holt Labor MP Anthony Byrne welcomed income tax cuts, as well as new mental health and road funding but a "more substantial plan" was needed for the rapidly-growing community.

He said there had been federal inaction on road congestion. Labor would add lanes to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Thompsons Road, he said.

Hotham Labor MP Clare O'Neil was disappointed in the $77.9 million cut in refugee services.

"These are some of Australia's most vulnerable people and they need help and support when they first join our communities.

"These cuts will mean refugees now have to wait 12months, rather than six, to access Jobactive and receive that support for finding work in Australia."

She was disappointed that there was no mention of raising the Newstart allowance.

Reshma dishes up a winner A home cook's write-up on a flavoursome ricedish has taken out Armada Dandenong Plaza's food blogger competition.

Reshma Abdul Qadir, of Dandenong, beat a hot field with her article on her Hyderabadi dum biryani.

The other three finalists wrote on fish tikka masala with cauliflower rice, Italian parmigiana, and beef-and-bean quesadilla with homemade tortilla and spicy tomato salsa.

Ms Qadir said she loved trying to add her own ideas to recipes.

"Making biryani takes a lot of time, patience and includes many ingredients.

"I was really proud of the end result and the dish was enjoyed by my whole family in a traditional setting."

As part of the competition, entrants were provided with vouchers at the plaza to source fresh ingredients and cook their most popular dish.

Corporate box will miss first round

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Despite wide outcry, a council ban on Springvale Districts Football Club’s use of a shipping container as a matchday corporate box looked set to extend beyond the season’s opening home game.

The initiative at Springvale Reserve, Newcomen Road had proved a successful revenueraiser throughout the 2018 season, according to the club.

Since then, and after long negotiations in the pre-season, the council deemed the use of the ‘permanent structure’ as illegal without a permit.

On Facebook, the “frustrated and disappointed” club described the process - and outcome as “another ridiculous maze of red tape”.

“After a long and time-consuming process throughout the pre-season we were finally informed that we would not be permitted to have our corporate box.

“This is extremely disappointing as this was an original proactive idea that not only provided financial benefits to our club but also promoted attendance at local football which in our tough local landscape is desperately needed.”

The council is now meeting the club for further discussions including “alternative options” on Monday 8 April. This meant the issue was unresolved ahead of the near-50-year-old club’s opening home clash against Caulfield Bears on 6 April. Mayor Roz Blades said on 4 April that she was hoping to “sort it out” and “do the best” for the club.

“We had a meeting on Monday to discuss a way forward because it’s a very valued club in Greater Dandenong.

“It can’t be resolved without a permit. There will need to be appropriate permits.”

Springvale Districts president Sean Francis said the club had not sought a permit last year, nor did the council raise concerns during last season.

A man was seriously wounded during a brawl involving up to 15 males near Noble Park station on Sunday 31 March.

The victim in his twenties was stabbed twice during the affray between two groups in Douglas Street about 9.10pm, police say.

He was driven to a nearby ambulance station, where he was treated by paramedics.

Ambulance Victoria stated the man had been stabbed in the upper body.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital by ambulance in a serious condition.

Arsonists target shed and bungalow Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating suspicious fires at a shed and a bungalow.

Two suspect males fled from a blaze that started in a tin shed at the rear of an abandoned property at the corner of Hemmings and Robinson streets, Dandenong about 8.26am on Tuesday 2 April.

They were last observed running through a car park in Cadd Lane.

Meanwhile, a bungalow was set alight at the back of a residential premises at Keech Close, Noble Park about 1.35am on Wednesday 27 March.

A verbal argument between three males and two females visiting Rohingya Bazaar spilled onto the street at Lightwood Avenue about 5.15pm on Monday 1 April.

During the affray, one of the males was struck and received moderate injuries.

It was not clear who struck the females, police say.

Police pounce on cannabis crop-houses A police operation has seized more than 1000 cannabis plants from crop-houses in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia.

As part of Operation Bagration, police from the Southern Metro Region, Division Three and Divisional Response Unit targeted 13 hydroponic grow-houses between 19-28 March.

Police seized and destroyed 1167 plants.

They had been assisted by electricity companies in processing the unlawful electricity bypasses and associated crimes.

Police say the raids significantly disrupted organised criminal activity and the local supply of cannabis.

Three injured in violent Hallam attack Police have released images of three men as part of an investigation into an alleged armed robbery and assault in Hallam.

Two 18-year-old men from Hampton Park and a 19-year-old man from Berwick were hospitalised after being attacked by three unknown males at Hallam railway station about 1.30am on Saturday 9 March.

The attackers initially asked the victims for a lighter before assaulting them. They stole a mobile phone during the robbery.

The robbers were described as Islander in appearance and wearing dark clothing.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the robbery.

True history of the Apex Gang written

By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was not so long ago that 'The Apex Gang' loomed large.

The terrifying spates of car-jacking, home invasions and smash-and-grab burglaries, the Moomba festival riots all seemed to point to a group that started with two teenage brothers in Apex Street in Dandenong in 2012.

Author and lawyer Dr Brian Williams examines the group and the public reaction in his book Melbourne Under Siege? The Moral Panic behind the Apex Gang and Youth Crime.

The group wasn't so much a typical organised gang. If a 'gang' existed, it was a "small cohort of offenders" - a Facebook network that peaked at possibly 200 members, Dr Williams argues.

They didn't terrorise their neighbours but travelled to richer suburbs, kicking down doors, grabbing the keys to cars and leaving a trail of traumatised victims. Their violence induced a "moral panic".

The South-Sudanese community was identified with the crimes, even though the group's offenders were a mix of backgrounds.

As the reports mounted, 'Apex' became a "shorthand way to symbolise 'African youth crime', without the need to actually say it", Dr Williams wrote.

As a disturbing consequence, the "vast, vast majority" of law-abiding South Sudanese Australians became targets.

They copped abuse in the streets, were suspected of thieving when shopping, and were shunned from getting work or rental homes.

Kids from the community were scared to go

to school, Dr Williams writes.

There's a long history of youth 'gangs' in Australia, such as the postcode groups like Dandneong's 3175 gang and the Sharpies, he says.

Youth crime is often linked to young people not seeing a positive way forward. Initiatives such as sports teams help.

"Youth crime has been going as long as we have had youths. It is possible to turn these kids around but there's no simplistic answer to this."

In the media, some denied Apex Gang existed while others relentlessly talked it up as a threat.

Dr Williams says there were "elements of truth on both sides", adding that crime statistics could be often interpreted either way.

"I don't think you can blame the media a great deal. They can only report on the crime as it happens.

"The better way to stop the reports is to stop the crimes in the first place."

Though the Apex Gang is "defunct", still there's derogatory online commentary on 'African gangs'.

"We can draw a little parallel with the tragedy in Christchurch. It shows the difference between free speech and hate speech - these things can lead to terrible situations.

"Let's hope it's a turning point.

"Perhaps on social media, people haven't given enough consideration as to what hate speech is and how it impacts on people just going about their everyday lives."

Bus death sparks concern

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The death of a 76-year-old man who was tipped out of his wheelchair aboard a publictransport bus in Springvale may have been prevented, the State Coroner has found.

John Edwin Wilks, of Mulgrave, who had been paralysed by a stroke down his left side, was unable to grip a handrail to steady himself as the Ventura bus rounded a corner from Police Road to Springvale Road, Coroner Simon McGregor found on 19 March.

"If a restraint system more effective than a handhold had been in place on Mr Wilks' bus,

his death might have been prevented."

He called out as his wheelchair started to tilt but was powerless to stop himself hitting the floor about 9.48am on 13 August 2017.

He was assisted back into his wheelchair by the Ventura Bus Lines driver and other passengers, then helped off at Springvale railway station, where he phoned emergency services.

At Monash Medical Centre, he was admitted with fractured ribs and internal bleeding.

He developed pneumonia and respiratory failure.

He died in palliative care 13 days later.

Coroner McGregor noted that little seemed to have been done since a transport safety investigation into a similar incident in 2006.

There was no legislative requirement for active restraints of wheelchairs on buses. According to submissions from bus industry and public transport groups, there were technical challenges in installing them.

However the coroner recommended that effective wheelchair restraints should be installed on public buses.

The voices of people with disabilities had to be heard during any discussion process, he said.

"Wheelchair users must not only be able

to access public buses, they must feel safe on them, and they ought not be physically imperilled by the manner in which these systems are operated.

"Mr Wilks' death has highlighted that previously identified systemic risks remain unresolved."

Coroner McGregor praised Ventura for proposing to install a rearward-facing 'ironing board device' on future buses. Wheelchairs could be tethered to the device.

He recommended that the Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne encourage other bus operators to follow Ventura's lead.

The Keysborough school hosted TV sports presenters Nathan Currie and Natalie Yoannidis, as well as St Kilda footballer Jade Gresham, Melbourne Rebels rugby players Luke Jones and Campbell Magnay and Olympian and Paralympian Milly Tapper.

Premier's Active April encourages people to do 30 minutes of physical activity a day this month.

"The main aim of the launch is to encourage our school community to continue to keep fit and healthy and to show them the different ways that they can do this," a college spokesperson said.

"We also want to celebrate our sports stars and also encourage our students to pursue their sporting goals too."

100 years ago 10 April 1919 Dandenong Swimming Baths Letter to the Editor Sir, having been absent from Dandenong I did not see Mr Plug's letter, re swimming baths until today. I am afraid the writer of that growl was suffering from an over charged liver. I think he must also be blind or ignorant of the history of those much abused baths. I presented to the members of the shire council a plan for a brick and cemented bath to cost £500. All the encouragement I received was that if I raised the money, they would "spend it."

This was too gigantic a task for me to attempt, considering the opposition I received. In spite of all antagonism, I preserved, and with good help of a few staunch friends, we

succeeded in raising £17 for the children's swings and £150 for the swimming baths which were opened on December 21st 1912. Dozens of boys and girls have won their certificates for life saving, swimming.

There is still a good credit balance in the bank and I hope for better and bigger results in the future. Yours E M Orgill "Gladstone House" Dandenong.

50 years ago 8 April 1969 Tops for the third time For the third consecutive year Dandenong Technical School has trained the State's top moor mechanic apprentice. He is Graeme South of Springvale, who has been awarded the GMH Travel Award for motor mechanic apprentices. Graeme received the award during a brief ceremony at the school last

week, when a GMH representative Mr Alford presented him with a cheque for $169. The other part of the award is a guided tour of all GMH plants in Victoria and SA.

20 years ago 12 April 1999 Refugees' Hope Springvale's former Enterprise Migrant Hostel could become the destination for temporary refugees who have fled Kosovo. Greater Dandenong mayor Councillor Naim Melhem has called on the Minister for Immigration, Mr Ruddock, to reopen the Westall road hostel to accommodate several hundred refugees. "We could probably accommodate all 4000 of them: This City has a large population of Albanians who will offer these refugees all kinds of support."

5 years ago 7 April 2014 A Dream 20 years in the making Its 20 years since Springvale and Dandenong became the City of Greater Dandenong. A new civic precinct in Dandenong has been touted for almost as long. Mayor Jim Memeti joined council in late 2005 and soon found himself on an annual councillor weekend retreat. "And the first subject that I was in discussions with was about a new building in Dandenong" he said. "Every year since then; we had the same thing at the annual retreat.

It never got off the ground, it just stopped every year. "Before the end of my term in 2010 we signed a memorandum of understanding to build on the Lonsdale and Walker Street site."

Suspicious pool-hall fire

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police are investigating a suspicious fire that gutted a popular pool-hall building in Round Tower Road, Dandenong South.

More than 50 CFA and MFB fire-fighters tackled the fierce blaze that started on the top floor and spread through the roof of the distinctive round building before 4am on Monday 1 April.

The roof partially collapsed, causing firefighters to withdraw from inside the building.

No one was injured, the CFA reported.

In the meantime, a smoke warning was issued for the surrounding area. One lane of the South Gippsland Highway was closed.

A pool hall, bar and restaurant run by Star Entertainment Centre on the upper floor appeared to be gutted.

A shisha bar and pool hall run by Dunya Entertainment on the ground floor sustained

water damage, according to the business's Facebook post.

"Due to a fire outbreak at the upper floor neighbours, our business has been affected by water damage," the post stated.

"Therefore, we are forced to stay closed for the upcoming days.

"We will put in the highest possible amount of effort and energy to get back to operation."

Greater Dandenong CIU police are investigating the fire. No suspects have been identified at this stage, police say.

His life for others

Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Three charged after chase

By Brendan Rees A Dandenong woman is among three charged over allegedly leading police on a dangerous pursuit in four stolen cars across the South East.

Lynbrook resident Robin Dzedins described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her following the dramatic police chase in Cranbourne on Monday 1 April.

Ms Dzedins said she was turning left into Camms Road from South Gippsland Highway about 2.30pm when she saw a car "swerving like a maniac."

"I could only see it head on hurtling straight at me. Luckily I was turning left, had I been going straight ahead I would've been hit," Ms Dzedins said.

"I thought he was going to hit the side of my car.

"I looked behind and saw bits of car he had hit flying in the air and I was thinking 'God, I haven't been killed and hope no one behind me is killed.'"

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne.

The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park.

Dash-cam footage captured the alleged stolen Ford ute driving on the wrong side of South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs.

Ms Dzedins said: "It was very frightening, I was very lucky."

"I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door han-

dles, something like that," she added.

"There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident."

Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway.

The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking; eight counts of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of arson, three burglaries, and three counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft.

A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft.

Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April.

A 21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

She was bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates' Court on 3 September.

Prince apples’ purple reign Would you believe there's an apple called the Purple Prince?

A firm flavoursome apple with "purple skin" and "crisp white flesh" developed by Tibetan growers of the Black Diamond variety.

Well, it was nothing more than a tasty April Fool's Day gag, that went viral on Dandenong Market's social media platforms.

Yet, the explanation dreamt up by the market's marketing manager - and Prince fan sounded nearly convincing.

"The temperature differences between day and night are significant, and the fruits get a lot of sunlight and ultraviolet light which cause their skin to change colour," it stated.

"Purple Prince has been named as a tribute

to Prince and his legendary song 'Sometimes it snows in April'."

Apparently, some customers were taken in by the hoax, according to Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs.

"We've heard from our traders that customers did come to the Market looking for Purple Prince apples," she said.

"We were surprised the social media story got so much traction and we had fun reading all the comments."

The Instagram and Facebook posts on the "brand new apple variety" were seen by the market's biggest-ever "organic reach" audience of more than 70,000.

The Purple Prince apple went viral on April Fool's Day.

Hammered robbers target bottle shops

Police believe the two robberies that happened within 30 minutes on Saturday 23 March are linked.

At 5pm, two men wielding hammers made demands for cash and cigarettes at an outlet on Chandler Road, Keysborough.

The attendant complied after the pair smashed the counter and a computer monitor.

About 5.35pm, a man armed with a hammer threatened an attendant at a store on Police Road, Mulgrave.

The attendant was forced to hand over cash, police say.

Neither of the workers at the two liquor stores were injured.

Petrol pain

By Brendan Rees A Lyndhurst resident says surging fuel prices at the pump was hurting his hip pocket.

Michael Drew, who drives a Subaru Liberty to his workplace in Bayswater, said fuel prices were such a rip off he had avoided using tollways.

"If I go on the Eastlink it costs me 20 bucks a day," he said. I'm only getting $23 an hour. It costs you an hour's pay.

"We're paying far too much for fuel. I always try and buy it at the right times."

according to CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman.

However, he said motorists should start to see relief as fuel prices "should weaken" in the next week with the next discounting cycle expected to start after pump prices peaked on March 20 at 152.4 cents a litre.

"Rising fuel costs are another constraint on household budgets, especially with most Aussies booking-in blocks of annual leave for the upcoming school, Easter and Anzac Day holidays," he said.

Some of the highest unleaded prices revealed on Petrolspy.com on Friday 29 March was Coles Express Berwick on Clyde Road (149.9c a litre); BP Hallam Road Hampton Park (143.9c a litre); Caltex Cranbourne North on South Gippsland Highway (138.9c a litre), and Cole Express Hampton Park on South Gippsland Highway (145.9c a litre).

According to Mr Drew, Coles and 7-Eleven didn't "seem to have a lot of cheap stuff."

"United seems to be the cheapest all the time. Coles is a joke with their four cents discount," he said.

Mr Drew, who works as a courier truck driver, said the company he worked for was also feeling the pinch: "The boss isn't happy. It's another 30 bucks he can do without."

RACV manager of vehicle engineering, Michael Case said when fuel prices reached an "unsustainable level" where profit margins were very low or even running at a loss "the fuel price gets driven back up again by some of the retailers."

"The majority of petrol stations will then follow this upwards trend," he said.

"As the price is currently still near the top of the cycle and trending down, we would advise motorists to top up rather than fill up where possible."

The rich, powerful voice of singer-songwriter Damien Leith is set to be enhanced by strings for the first time.

His show The Best of Damien Leith with String Quartet will land in Dandenong on26 April, as part of a brief national tour.

"I think all of the music I do lends itself really well to a string quartet sound," Leith said.

"It is something I have wanted to do for a long time."

Leith will be joined by his regular band, making a total of seven musicians on stage.

He was excited to perform songs such as Hallelujah, Crying and American Triology for the first time with strings.

"Audiences get to hear all those songs with all their beauty.

"One of my main loves is orchestration. It is one of the things I spend time doing in the studio - orchestration for movies and TV pieces."

He said the arrangements by award-winning songwriter Jessica Graham were "phenomenal".

Leith will feature the best songs from his nine albums, as well as some from his upcoming 10th album due for release mid-year.

Pokies club strikes back

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Club Noble has hit back at Greater Dandenong Council’s call for tighter regulations of pokie venues.

The council recently voted to lobby for a ban on inducements like free drinks and gifts as ploys to increase players’ gambling.

Mandatory breaks and daily time limits on gamblers would also be part of its submission to a State Government review of its responsible gambling code-of-conduct.

Club Noble president Barry Bradshaw said the Victorian club industry would refute that it was engaging in activities to increase the amount of money lost by people.

“The Victorian gaming sector is highly regulated to ensure that this type of behaviour does not exist and to ensure that adequate harm minimisation activities are in place”.

Mandatory breaks and daily time limits were “good in theory” but difficult to manage due to staff shift changes, Mr Bradshaw said.

The Noble Park-based venue did not provide gift incentives, he said.

“If requested however we will provide complimentary coffees to gaming patrons, which are usually consumed in the lounge area or outside terrace.

“We don’t consider this an inducement but a respite for patrons having time away from the gaming machines.”

The council’s residents are one of the hardest-hit by poker machine losses, pouring in $121 million in 2017-18.

Keysy mates are all in the money A private syndicate of 'lifelong mates' from Keysborough are rejoicing today after their long-running syndicate scored a division one win in the weekend's TattsLotto draw.

The syndicate held one of the nine division one winning entries nationally in TattsLotto draw 3933, drawn Saturday 30 March. Each entry takes home a division one prize of $2,222,222.23.

As well as winning the coveted division one prize, the syndicate's System 10 marked entry also scored division three 24 times and division four 90 times, bolstering their total prize to $2,251,563.43.

Speaking with a Tatts official this morning to confirm the win, the syndicate leader shared the windfall would be life-changing for the syndicate members.

"Wow! I checked the ticket on Saturday night but it hasn't sunk in yet!" he laughed.

"We definitely celebrated but it's a bit surreal.

"There are a few of us included in this, all lifelong mates, and we've been playing for 10 years.

"We all chose a couple of numbers each and they are all significant to us because they are our kids' birthdates.

"There have been phone calls from 11 pm, 12 pm at night and all the way through the morning from 1 am to 6 am.

"The phone calls haven't stopped and they'll continue again today I think!"

When asked how the syndicate leader planned to spend his share of the windfall, he revealed it would go straight to paying off his mortgage.

"It will go straight towards the house!" he declared.

"This win is completely life-changing for us. It will really go a long way to helping everyone pay off their houses.

"It will be great that now we won't have to worry about that."

The syndicate leader, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased the winning System 10 marked entry at Portside Lotto and Liquor, 393 Bay Street, Port Melbourne.

Portside Lotto and Liquor owner Ted Zafiris said he was excited his outlet had sold a division one winning entry.

"We are so excited for our lucky customers!" he said.

"As a Tatts agent, there isn't a better feeling than when a customer wins any prize, let alone winning division one!

"We've sold 18 division ones over the years. The most recent was a syndicate share in TattsLotto in February.

"The win has really created a party atmosphere in the store.

Non-stop circuit fun The Phillip Island Circuit is the go-to destination for non- stop fun these school holidays.

By Brendan Rees A Lysterfield South resident fears it's just a matter of time before falling branches on his nature strip will harm someone.

A petition of 14 signatures was presented to Casey Council on 5 March from residents of Hillside Court, Panorama Court and Parkview Terrace, asking for the trees to be removed and replaced with suitable ones.

Head petitioner Peter Wardley says gum trees on Hillside Court - with some overhanging on properties - were dropping branches up to three metres long with "many dead branches just waiting to fall."

"The street is an eyesore," he said. "You only have to look around the street to see evidence of them on front lawns and pathways causing a tripping danger for pedestrians."

Mr Wardley said bark, twigs, branches and leaves were also blocking drains causing flooding of properties during heavy periods of rain, as well as lifting footpaths.

"The piles of leaves and bark that build up in the street and down the lane way to the retarding basin are a constant fire danger in summer.

"On windy days your television or satellite reception drops in and out because of the proximity of large trees," he added.

"No grass will grow and many front yards are affected with the lack of water and sunlight creating dustbowls.

According to Mr Wardley the trees are in contravention of council's own tree policy: "We are entitled to a pleasant looking street just like the rest of the estate."

Mr Wardley thanked Four Oaks Ward Councillor Rosalie Crestani for her support.

Casey manager of city presentation David Richardson said following the tabling of the petition council officers would be "assessing the potential removal and replacement of the trees in accordance with council's resolution."

Resident Donna Everard said she scarred her knee after tripping on an uneven footpath on a sidewalk off Hillside Court.

"I fell over going down that path about a year ago," she said. "I wouldn't call it dangerous but I always watch where I'm walking now - took me by surprise."

Isabelle Murphy, a senior associate at Zaparas Lawyers, who specialises in public liability matters, said the footpaths should be free of hazards.

The Casey Multi-Faith Network has celebrated 13 wonderful years in the community in promoting positive relations between people of different faiths.

Casey councillors joined members of the Network at Bunjil Place on Friday 29 March for an anniversary gathering where refreshments and entertainment was provided.

President Kathy Burgstahler the event highlighted peace, harmony and understanding.

"Now more than ever, in light of the tragic events of the past month, the Casey Multi-faith Network needs to exist and be supported," she said.

"Our 13th anniversary was testament to that, with everyone who attended standing side by side to support each other.

"Everyone in the community is invited to attend our meetings and it's a great way to find out for yourself what people of differing faiths or backgrounds actually believe," she added.

Ms Burgstahler also thanked all councillors for their "unwavering support," "Cr Rosario in particular has attended practically every meeting we have had for the past two years and has worked tirelessly with our Network to ensure that it is inclusive of all," she said.

Bloodhounds depart DDCA next season

By Nick Creely Local cricket powerhouse Mordialloc will officially depart the Dandenong District Cricket Association next season, with the Bloodhounds switching to the Cricket Southern Bayside competition.

The Bloodhounds - one of four clubs in the Kingston area that have played in the DDCA - have been a powerhouse of the competition for several years after initially joining the association, winning first XI premierships in 2008/09, 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2017/18, before only narrowly finishing outside of the top four in Turf 1.

The departure of the club is set to impact on the association even further than their strong impact on the field, with the potential for a domino effect to unfold.

St Brigid's/St Louis - who won the DDCA Twenty20 cup - are another club potentially on the verge of a move to Southern Bayside, with the club also geographically located in Kings-

ton City, while Dingley may be another to have a look at their options after rumours started swirling last season.

The departure of the Bloodhounds fueled talk about the Turf 1 promotion and relegation, with St Mary's - as it stands - the side who would go down into Turf 2, while Narre South are set to be the one promoted.

However, with another club departing the Turf 1 grade, as it currently stands, there would be an uneven amount of teams, and therefore a bye would be created for each side, which isn't a realistic option.

The DDCA informed the clubs on Thursday that there would be some changes to the Turf 2, 3 and 4 grades as of 2019/20.

"As a result of Mordialloc's move, the DDCA wishes to make an early announcement that this year's Turf 2, Turf 3 & Turf 4 premiers will all be promoted next season, but teams finishing last in Turf 1, Turf 2 and Turf 3 will not be relegated at this stage," the association said.

Brilliant South Australian pup Red Rock announced himself a serious contender for the Launching Pad following his powerful victory in a heat of the $432,000 series at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

Making his first start in Victoria, Red Rock stepped well from box 4 before being shuffled back worse than midfield through the first turn he struggled to find clear running before a gap opened as they entered the back straight and the son of Fernando Bale took off, sweeping around the field and running down early leader There's A Catch to win by a length.

While his winning time of 29.58 was only moderate, it was the manner of the victory that caught the eye of the punters and pleased his trainer Steve White.

"He's very strong," he said.

"I got a little bit worried around the first corner with where he was in the field but once he hooked to the outside I was confident he make it into the first four, then he really started motoring once he got down the back."

Red Rock inherited a berth in the sweepstakes series after his littermate Alfieri, winner of the South Australian qualifying series, became ill. He had his first look at Sandown Park in an exhibition trial between races the previous week and White believes he has more improvement to come.

"I was watching him and he got down in the boxes well and I thought he jumped really good tonight compared to the way he'd been jumping in SA. He's been here for a bit over a week now so he should benefit from that run."

Red Rock's victory completed a winning double for White with another former South Australian, Tauwitchere, recording the fastest time of the night (29.42) in the night's opening
