Sporting millions By Nick Creely The Pakenham senior and junior football clubs, as well as the Pakenham Little Athletics and Pakenham Pumas Baseball Club have been boosted by a $4.5 million investment from the Liberals Nationals Government, despite some uncertainty as to where the funds will be allocated. La Trobe MP Jason Wood has confirmed that he will invest $3 million to deliver the junior football club redevelopment project, as well as upgrades to the athletics and baseball facility, and a further $1.5m to the football and netball club extension. However, confusion and speculation reigned on social media as to whether the allocation of the $4.5 million would be spread to all user groups of Toomuc Reserve. An initial media release from Mr Wood on

28 March stated that he would deliver $4 million for "Pakenham senior football netball club and Pakenham junior football club", with no mention of the other user groups that use Toomuc Reserve, but put an end to the confusing by telling the News that all user groups of Toomuc Reserve will benefit, not just the football and netball club. The investment comes as a relief for Scott Nimmo from the Pakenham Little Athletics Club, who has slammed the facility that it uses as the club gears up for its 50th year, labelling it as "embarrassing". "We've outgrown ourselves - it's one of the fastest growing corridors in the country, and you go anywhere else, there's a state of the art athletics track within 10 kilometres, and here, there's nothing," he said. "It's hugely embarrassing - we have an an-

nual event between us and Cranbourne and the amount of times we've spoken to parents who have visited, and they've been like 'are you kidding?'" IYU Recreational Reserve will be the eventual home of the Little Athletics club, with further development of the complex on Henry Road set to take place over the next two years, paving the way for the baseball club to solely have used of the upgraded facility at Toomuc once works are completed. Despite rumours that IYU Recreational Reserve would be turned into a "full soccer facility", Cardinia Shire Council acting general manager Kristen Jackson said that something does need to be done about the facilities for the athletics and baseball clubs in the shirtterm, and confirmed that the long-term future of the athletics club lies at IYU Recreation Reserve on Henry Road.

"Council acknowledges the needs of the athletics and baseball clubs have expanded beyond the capacity and facilities available at Toomuc Recreation Reserve," she said. "To meet the immediate and short-term needs of these clubs, council has been investigating solutions to improve the amenities at the reserve, particularly the toilet facilities. "We are also addressing the longer-term need for a larger athletics facility as part of the masterplan for the further development of IYU Recreation Reserve on Henry Road, Pakenham. "Council will be considering a budget allocation for the detailed design and implementation of the proposed athletics facility at IYU Recreation Reserve as part of the draft five-year Capital Works Program currently being developed."

Group’s point of good faith By Brendan Rees The Casey Multi-Faith Network has celebrated 13 wonderful years in the community in promoting positive relations between people of different faiths. Casey councillors joined members of the Network at Bunjil Place on Friday 29 March for an anniversary gathering where refreshments and entertainment was provided. President Kathy Burgstahler the event highlighted peace, harmony and understanding. "Now more than ever, in light of the tragic events of the past month, the Casey Multi-faith Network needs to exist and be supported," she said. "Our 13th anniversary was testament to that, with everyone who attended standing side by side to support each other. "Everyone in the community is invited to attend our meetings and it's a great way to find

out for yourself what people of differing faiths or backgrounds actually believe," she added. Ms Burgstahler also thanked all councillors for their "unwavering support," "Cr Rosario in particular has attended practically every meeting we have had for the past two years and has worked tirelessly with our Network to ensure that it is inclusive of all," she said. Cr Damien Rosario said the Casey Multifaith Network had the power to unite everyone in a harmonious place, and congratulated the team for a successful event. "It's great to support such a fine group of volunteers," he said. "I also acknowledge the outstanding leadership of president Kathy Burgstahler and her dedicated committee of volunteers." Nickelodeon Australia's locally produced kids' reality TV series, Slime Cup is set to return for a bigger, better and 'slimier' season four, and is on the hunt for local superstars to join the cast. Property buyers flock to Officer The suburb of Officer was last year’s Victorian property surprise packet, new data from the REIV website has shown. The figures show annual house price growth of 10.7 percent, placing it second in the state behind Mt Martha on the Mornington Peninsula. Arcadia Estate, which is located in Officer, is experiencing ‘above average’ demand, with a recent land release selling out in just eight minutes. “Demand for land in Arcadia remains strong, especially from first home owners and upgraders,” Satterley general manager Jack Hoffmann said. “Between November and February, which is typically a quieter sales period, we averaged over 30 sales per month. That made Arcadia one of the fastest selling land estates in Melbourne.”

Nick Engelke recently built his first time in Officer next-door to his brother Justin. Mr Hoffmann said the combination of affordability, proximity to local schools and the way the region has been developed has made Officer highly desirable.

He admits that he was initially unsure about living in a masterplanned community, but two things changed his mind. One was the opinion and experience of his brother who was working with a building company; he had seen first-hand how modern developments so often bucked the stereotypes and offered a wonderful community in which to live. The other was the community they found in Officer. “What I enjoy most about living in a masterplanned community is the proximity to train stations, the freeway, shopping centres and nice modern parks,” Mr Engelke said. “The whole area feels well-planned and organised; it gives a sense of order which I like.”

Growing pains for Casey and Cardinia By Kyra Gillespie The populations of Casey and Cardinia have soared in the past year, again landing the burgeoning municipalities in the top 10 for population growth by LGA in Victoria.Rounding out the top five is Cardinia, with its population in the past 12 months rising by 4.6 per cent while Casey closely followed at 4.2 per cent. Liberal Gembrook MP Brad Battin has urged the Andrews Government to speed up local infrastructure upgrades to ease the growing pains. "This growth has not been unexpected, for many years we have heard and known we were targeted as a growth area of the state," Mr Battin said. "Victorian Labor has been in government for 16 of the last 20 years, and they have failed to plan for improved rail, better roads and a genuine plan to decentralise. Daniel Andrews is the reason our standard of living is declining. "Many residents have spoken to me about the time it takes to get from the city to Pakenham after work, imagine how bad it is going to get over the coming years." From 2017-2018, Cardinia's population climbed to 107,120, while Casey's reached 340,419, according to the latest ABS figures. Almost 3000 of that growth was attributed to internal migration in Cardinia, and roughly 6000 for Casey. Just over 540 new residents migrated from overseas in Cardinia, and just over 3860 in Casey. Bass Labor MP Jordan Crugnale has hit back at Mr Battins' claims, citing a number of infrastructure projects in the region.

"In Pakenham alone Labor has committed to removing four level crossings, building a new railway super station, additional car parking at stations, duplicating Healesville-Kooweerup Road and widening the Monash. If Federal Labor is elected we will fix Racecourse Road from the Princes Highway to the Freeway."

Pakenham line ‘worst in Melbourne’ By Kyra Gillespie Gembrook Liberal MP Brad Battin has slammed the Andrews Government following revelation that the Pakenham line was the worst-performing metropolitan train line in Melbourne. February 2019 metropolitan rail performance data shows that 259 train services were either cancelled, cut short, bypassed or skipped on the notoriously problematic line. Out of 4325 scheduled services in the month, 3417 were delivered on time. "Commuters in the South East deserve to receive the reliable, safe and timely public transport service they pay for," Mr Battin said. "Daniel Andrews and the Labor Government promised to abolish skipped services, and they have simply failed." "It was revealed last week that Daniel Andrews is spending $240,000 a day advertising he is delivering for all Victorians, he should use this money to make the Pakenham line reliable." The underwhelming February results fare better than January's results, with 83.1 per cent of trains delivered on time - up six per cent on the previous month. It comes as Pakenham line commuters face a mammoth construction blitz in April; with buses replace trains between Flinders Street and Caulfield/Westall from Saturday 6 April to Tuesday 23 April. Bass Labor MP Jordan Crugnale assures commuters that the short-term pain will be worth the long-term gain. "The Andrews Labor Government is delivering the biggest infrastructure program Victoria has ever seen," Ms Crugnale said. "Whether it's the Metro Tunnel, North East Link, West Gate Tunnel or the Suburban Rail Loop we're getting on with building the road and rail projects Victorians need to get them home sooner and safer."

Drugs seized By Cam Lucadou-Wells A police operation has seized more than 1000 cannabis plants from crop-houses in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. As part of Operation Bagration, police from the Southern Metro Region, Division Three and Divisional Response Unit targeted 13 hydroponic grow-houses between 19-28 March. Police seized and destroyed 1167 plants. They had been assisted by electricity companies in processing the unlawful electricity bypasses and associated crimes. Police say the raids significantly disrupted organised criminal activity and the local supply of cannabis.

$3m windfall for football, netball By Brendan Rees The clubrooms of Berwick Football and Netball Club will be revitalised with a multi-million funding boost announced. The long-awaited funding will go towards new netball change facilities; redevelopment of football and umpire change facilities; and redevelopment of the club canteen at Edwin Flack Reserve. La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the Federal Government had committed to $1.5 million in the redevelopment which the club desperately needed. "The facilities, especially for females are absolutely shocking. For the netball girls, they haven't got any change rooms facilities, any showers, (any only) two toilets," he said. "It's an embarrassment that it's been allowed to get to this. "The canteen facility was actually closed by council last year," he added. Mr Wood provided a "heartfelt thanks" to the club who had been petitioning for a redevelopment. "We want this to rock and roll really quickly. Council is going to have the money available in the budget," he said. "Sport keeps young people engaged and teaches them skills and team work, leadership and working together." At their 19 March meeting, Casey Council would pour $2 million to the project should the Federal Government match it. In a statement, Casey Council said it was pleased at the $1.5 million commitment which, along with Council's commitment of

"Mr Wood and the Berwick Football and Netball Club have been advocating strongly for these upgrade works to further invest in health and fitness, leadership and team work outcomes and to deliver improved facilities for our community. Mr Wood said his next goal was to find a home for the Berwick Junior Football Club: "The problem is that they haven't got a home so I'm very keen to give them funding for a building facility." "The council is trying to come up with a solution to find a ground for them for the future," he said.

Angry driver assaults boy A 14-year old boy has allegedly been grabbed by the throat and dragged onto a nature strip in Berwick after a confronting road rage incident. Police have appealed to witnesses following the Monday 25 March scuffle where it's alleged two 14 year old boys were riding their bicycles in the middle of Chirnside Drive before turning into Bemersyde Drive about 3.30pm. A white ute also turned into Bemersyde Drive and overtaken the riders before pulling over in front of them, blocking their path. Police say one of the riders has ridden on to the nature strip, while the other has tried to ride around the ute; however, the driver has opened the car door causing the rider to stop. The driver has grabbed the boy by the throat before dragging him on to the nature strip and throwing him down, police allege. The driver then started to abuse the other rider and pushed him up against the bus shelter. Police believe there were a number of people in the area who witnessed the incident, however, at this time have spoken to one witness. The witness that police have spoken to believed that someone may have filmed the incident. I write concerning the O’Shea Road project and effects on the local population in that area. We already experience constant and at times intrusive noise from the Monash freeway, enough to wake you up at 2am as it did this morning (Tuesday, 2 April). This road has some noise reduction features (which are useless). O’Shea Road will become a six-lane road from the interchange to Clyde Road. Eventually, Greaves Road and Pound Road will also be developed in the same manner to Shrives Road. However, as it is a gazetted road site, there will be no noise reduction features in the final design. The Monash Freeway is relatively level. O’Shea road has some sizeable rises and falls. Further there will be four sets of lights between Soldiers Road and Clyde Road. I have not been able to find out if there will be any curfew times for trucks to use this road. There are some thousands of homes that will not only be affected by greater traffic through the area but increased noise and other pollution that does not appear to be addressed at any level of government. I have approached our local federal and state members and candidates and our local councillors to seek more information, ask what they really know about the project and also to correct some of the information that they have been putting in our letterboxes. There has been a very mixed response to these efforts. I want to work collaboratively with everyone to achieve an outcome that helps us all. The issues I have put here are really just the start of a number of matters that are progressing in the Berwick area. I ask that a public meeting be convened to try and get a better outcome for all. I am a resident living in the City of Casey and a cat owner. I write you this letter to complain about registration fees for cat owners. Last year the registration fee for my cat increased from $52 to now $54.50. I have written an email to the City of Casey Council two years in a row to complain about cat registration fees and have had no reply at all. I have looked at the notice to see if there was any reason for this increase in fees and I have found none. I did find however, that my registration fee for owning a cat helps the council to pay for the maintenance of dog parks and assist to manage animal inquiries. Please explain why some of the money charged for cat registration fees should go towards dogs? This seems rather unfair and unjustifiable. I have never owned a dog. So, why have my registration fees for my little cat increased? Has the cat population doubled in a year? Has a bird population of magpies or miners become extinct from too many pet cats? Have more tomcats been on the prowl recently? Have our pet cats signed up for unemployment benefits? Perhaps we have all become a nation of cat haters. Is this why the council thinks that cat owners should pay up? The line of thinking that cats are destructive to the environment is only partly deserved. Responsible cat owners that register their cats, microchip them, de-sex them, provide cat runs for them and bring them in at night are responsible, law-abiding citizens who should not be held responsible for picking up the costs incurred by those that are irresponsible. Those that purchase animals for a birthday or Christmas present and have had a change in mind in wanting to keep them, then later dump them in bushland a few months later should be held accountable and punished for it. Rather than raise my registration fees why does the council not increase fines for those that don’t follow the standard legal requirements! We already pay enough for rates considering that the cost of living increases yearly and most people’s wages have not gone up in about 10 years. Ratepayers in Casey have seen big expenditure from our council. It is absurd that our council has been able to fit the bill for Bunjil Place and pay millions of dollars for land development at Berwick Springs, among other things. However, the council implies it can’t look after a few dog parks and catch a few rogue cats without increasing registration fees. Below is an outline of the registration fees I have received thus far: * Cat registration fees of 2016 $45; * Cat registration fees of 2017 $50; * Cat registration fees of 2018 $52; and * Cat registration fees of 2019 $54.50. In comparison the council of Baw Baw Shire only charges cat registration fees to the sum of $39, which begs the question again as to how Casey Council can not only charge higher fees but also increase those fees steadily each year. As a duly elected representative of Casey residents, Cr Aziz acted in good faith, and he should be congratulated for his courage to move where others fear to tread. I have checked out what is thorium, online, and I don’t have a chemistry degree. It does look like it is less a risk for accidents, which is plainly better, than straight out enriched yellowcake uranium/plutonium nuclear power plants. It looks like it could be more easy to switch off the reactors. But it looks like any thorium reactor needs some of these highly dangerous ingredients to get it working. If Cr Aziz would explain to the public what this is about, or get some expert to, it doesn’t mean we’d have to support it, but at least we’d know what he’s talking about. Kinder gets revamp By Brendan Rees An extra 20 kindergarten places will be on offer per year following the multi-million revamp of a Narre Warren family and community centre. The $2.8 million redevelopment of Strathaird Family and Community Centre was officially re-opened on Wednesday 27 March. The centre features a consulting room for Maternal and Child Health services, a fouryear-old kindergarten room, an outdoor play area, and upgrades to the existing large multipurpose community room with modern audio-visual technology, a kitchen, courtyard and an extra community meeting room. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon joined councillors, the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek, and Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas for the re-opening celebrations. "Today we celebrate the delivery of several extra spaces, which will cater for an additional 20 students this year and provide opportunities for the centre to increase its overall intake to 162 students," Cr Stapledon said. "Centres like this allow our children to learn new skills and our community groups to run recreational and support programs; so essentially, this is a space where together our community will grow." Council secured a $1.4 million grant in 2016 through the State Government's Growing Suburbs Fund, which was matched by Council to deliver additional kindergarten spaces and enhanced community facilities at Strathaird. Mr Maas said: "It's great to see the Andrews Labor Government's Growing Suburbs Fund delivering projects like the Strathaird Family and Community Centre, providing vital services to growing communities like Narre Warren South."

Berwick's Bob Juggins celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by loving family and friends on Saturday 30 March. Having grown up in Geelong, his childhood consisted of playing in the Geelong Junior City Band and collecting stamps and coins. The accountant (of 60 years) later married his childhood sweetheart Val at Noble St Methodist Church Newton on 22 March, 1951. They have four daughters along with eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. From there, he moved to Berwick, where he has lived for 22 years. Mr Juggins was an active member in various organisations including Corio Bay Rowing Club, a life member at Richmond Rowing Club and Berwick Probus. Emergency services have hung up their boots for an evening, gathering at the Narre Warren Bowls Club for some social competition on Monday 18 March. The event involved teams of 12 players each from Narre Warren police, ambulance, SES, and CFA stations. Club member Eric Sydenham said the inaugural competition was supported by the Bendigo Bank and allowed the opportunity for emergency services to bond in a social atmosphere. "These four organisations would normally only interact in stressful circumstances whilst attending emergency situations," he said.

Onshore support rewards By Narelle Coulter Most Friday afternoons just before happy hour kicks off, the staff at Narre Warren based VentraIP leave their computers and gather around the Wheel of Rewards. One lucky employee, singled out for going above and beyond, gets to step up and spin the colourful wheel cheered on by their colleagues. The wheel can dial up prizes ranging from a holiday, to a new smart phone, to cash and even a new car. It can also land on the booby prize. “We needed a way to reward team members on a consistent basis for going above and beyond, “explained VentraIP CEO Angelo Giuffrida. “The reward wheel was born out of staff feedback and has evolved over time. Everyone is involved and there is a really encouraging, positive vibe. “Most people spin the wheel rather than take a guaranteed envelope of cash because it’s fun.“ The Wheel of Rewards is just one innovative way Angelo and his business partner Cheyne Jonstone keep their staff of 49 happy and engaged. As a group, VentraIP is the largest privately owned web host and domain name registrar in Australia. “Essentially we operate three brands - VentraIP Australia, Zuver and Synergy Wholesale. Each brand focuses on a specific segment of the market, but all of them operate within the online services space, “explained Angelo. VentraIP started 10 years ago in Cheyne’s Officer home. “I can’t stand the phrase bedroom to boardroom, it is so clichéd, but it really is akin to our story, it’s what we came from, “ Angelo explained. Initially the business comprised just Cheyne and Angelo, but as it expanded working from Cheyne’s house became unworkable. “It got to the point where there were three of us in the office which was all it was built for. When another staff member came in for meetings on a Friday he would have to work at the side of my desk, I’d have to climb over him to get out of the office to get a drink. “We hired a developer and he was in the kitchen.“ Angelo and Cheyne moved their business into office space in Verdun Drive and then to its current 1500 square metre secure office in the Casey Business Park. “We wanted to stay in the South East and we were fortunate that there was a Telstra fibre connection straight back to our data centre in Port Melbourne, which is where our servers are, in the building. That enabled us to have the speeds and connectivity to run our business in this area.“ The landlord has allowed Angelo and Cheyne to grow and customise the space. When Grow visited builders were converting a recreation area into a fully equipped gymnasium.

Staff also have access to an on-site cafe and bar, hair salon, games room, nap room, child’s swing set and a New York style phone booth for private phone calls. A chef serves staff lunch and a barista is on hand for coffee orders. “We’ve got away with a lot of crazy things in this office, which fosters our core values and beliefs which is to be transparent and open and it’s how we still operate today, “said Angelo. All VentraIP’s staff are Australian based, a fact that sets the company apart in the competitive tech space. Initially VentraIP’s support team was based in India, with Australian based staff dealing with escalated cases. “The market shifted and we identified a gap in market in terms of service delivery, which is virtually non-existent in the online services and web hosting space. As providers all moved slowly to offshoring, we made the tough decision to say ’you know what? It’s not working for us’. “Our customer retention is high because our products are good but we needed to improve so we made the decision to bring everything back in-house.“ Angelo said they considered a telecommuting model that would have let them hire staff from anywhere in Australia, but in the end decided to hire almost exclusively from the South East suburbs. “We had already fostered a relaxing environment where we provided lunch for staff and you can’t replicate that for people who were remote.“ He said the South East location had proved no barrier to recruiting highly skilled staff. VentraIP has customers in New Zealand

and the firm unsuccessfully attempted an expansion into the US. “We still service a large number of clients in New Zealand, but we are primarily focused on Australia. This sings true to where we are now as a company as Australia backed, Australian based, 100 per cent Australian. “I’m comfortable, I love what we’re doing. I’d rather be known for having an awesome product in Australia than having a mediocre product in Australia and a mediocre product in another market.“ In the office foyer stands a huge stuffed dinosaur. Smaller toy ’Venturasaurus’ are scattered around the office. “It’s not our mascot because dinosaurs are extinct, out dated and slow, which is not our business, but they’re cute and everyone loves them,“ said Angelo, laughing. The colourful toys, the well-stocked drinks fridges and the wide screen TVs scattered throughout the office are all testament to the time, energy and money Angelo and Cheyne spend on fostering a great workplace culture. “You can have great culture in an office that doesn’t have a swing or a gym. It’s about the environment from above, it’s got to come from above and it’s got to be truly believed by the people in charge and also shown,“ Angelo said. “It’s not a set and forget, you’ve got to constantly evolve. You’ve got to allow a lot of organic growth, and organic comradery. When you get to the point where you have team members (who are not rostered on) coming in on a Friday to spend time with friends or have couple of drinks or ask to play Dungeon and Dragons in the boardroom, that’s when you know you have organically fostered a good culture.“ Over the next five years, Angelo expects each of the businesses to continue to grow of-

He believes large providers like Go Daddy will eventually wake up to the idea of local support and the Australian market will continue to consolidate. “For the time being our goal is to offer the best quality support and products in the market. How that will look in five years, hopefully in a continued vein, but it really depends on how the market evolves. We can literally forecast 12 months ahead, maybe 16 months for product development, but beyond that we have no idea what is going to pop up in the market. “I am most proud of the fact that we’ve been able to evolve and change over 10 years and I’m most proud of the team we’ve fostered and the environment we’ve fostered. “I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life and the only people I can thank for that are my team.“

The Warriors bounce back By Hayley Wildes and Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors came away with three impressive wins and a tough loss in Big V action over the weekend. The Division 2 women kicked off Saturday night in style with an imposing 20-point win, 88-68, over Melbourne University at Cardinia Life. Despite giving up 31 offensive rebounds, the Warriors dominated from the outset as Stephanie Pal (23 points and 5 rebounds), Ellie Coutts (18 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists) and Keely Patterson (9 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists) put on a show. The Warriors now own a 2-1 record and sit third on the ladder. Capping off a great week for the Division 2 women's team, they also have an import on the way. Daphnee Frieson, a native of Mobile, Alabama, has signed on with the Warriors and will be suiting up for her first game on Sunday when Pakenham faces Wallan at home from 2pm. Having played division 1 college basketball for the University of Mississippi and Stetson University, Frieson also has years of experience playing Europe and averaged an impressive 17 points and 14 rebounds for Goga Baskeball in the Albanian Superliga in 2018. Frieson, a 6'5" rebounding machine, is the Warriors first ever female import and she will provide plenty of front court firepower as Pakenham looks to make serious noise this season. "What she'll do for players like Steph (Pal), Shannon (Patterson), and even Ebony (Robinson) and Jordy (Jordanne Dyer) off our bench is really good. It'll give us more flexibility to play to play their game and not be so reliant on them," coach Simo Pajdic said. "I think we've been outrebounded each game comfortably because we've got guards going up against bigs. "It'll be great to have Daphne to plug gaps, rebound, and defend those bigs we've struggled to defend." With the women getting the night off to a winning start, the Division 2 men also demolished their opponents in an extraordinary

The South East sets its sights on interleague glory By AFL South East Media Natural instincts are so important in football and new South Eastern Women's Football (SEWF) interleague coach Gary Sanford gave a glimpse of his own characteristics ahead of the first training session at Casey Fields last Wednesday night. Ask Sanford about the prospect of moulding a 65-strong squad into a cohesive unit against the Southern Football Netball League on Sunday 19 May - and his face lights up. It's his natural instinct - to be proud, passionate and excited about the challenge ahead as he looks to build on SEWF's one-point victory over the Northern Football League in the inaugural interleague clash last year. "It's fantastic to be a part of and something I've really been looking forward to, working with female footballers again who aspire to play at the highest level available to them," Sanford said. "And for me, it's all about pride and passion. It won't be the best 25 players that represent this league, it will be the players that give their all at training and show the coaching staff that they want to wear that jumper with pride." The just-turned 60-year-old has an impressive football resume having coached the Frankston Reserves to a VFA premiership in 1989. He took a long break from coaching as his four daughters grew up around him before his nephews pestered him into coaching the Red Hill juniors in 2001. After another long hiatus, he began coaching female football with his daughter Vicki making the Victorian School Sports team despite having no local club to call home. The Officer Tennis Club is set to receive new lighting as part of an almost $40,000 funding announcement. La Trobe MP Jason Wood announced the news last month, with the tennis club set to receive new LED lighting as part of Sport Australia's Move It AUS - Community Sport Infrastructure Grant program. Officer Tennis Club secretary Karina Clark spoke about the money the club will save with the new lights, which will help them further upgrade their facilities in the future. "The lights just aren't up to standard at the moment; we run coaching and often half the court is in the dark, so we've had a lot of trouble with that," she said. "Electricity is the largest cost for the Officer Tennis Club and the new lights will reduce our costs for electricity by 35-50 per cent, so that will be huge. "By saving money with these new lights, we will be able to get more money together to go towards new projects, as well as bringing more people in." The next major project in the sights of the Officer Tennis Club would be to upgrade facility accessibility. "Our main focus next would be to upgrade our access - from our clubhouse to the courts and toilets - because there's no disability access to our club," Clark said. "We're working with council on that, so hopefully we can generate some money and together with council we can get that done - it would mean a massive change in terms of access to the club and improving our toilet facilities." Two local rising athletics stars are set to take on the rest of Australia this week at the 2019 Australian junior track and field championships. Briana Sherry, 16, and Tatiyana Carver, 13, both attend Officer Secondary College and have risen through the ranks to qualify for the national championships in Sydney. The qualification process wasn't easy and Tatiyana enters the nationals having claimed silver in javelin and bronze in discus at the recent Victorian junior athletics championships, while Briana will be heading to her second nationals after winning gold in the 800-metre event at the Victorian little athletics state championships. Tatyiana will be competing in the U14 women's discus throw and the U14 women's javelin throw, while Briana will be running in the U17 women's 800-metre run. Briana started little athletics when she was 10 years old, while Tatiyana began at age five and it's fair to say their love for athletics hasn't wavered since.

"I've always loved doing middle-distance running events and when I started doing little aths, the 800-metre race was my favourite and it still is today," Briana said. "I just love running the longer distances and it's sort of like an in-between run where it's long, but it's also still a sprint, because I like running really, really fast." Heading to her second nationals, Briana is looking forward to improving on her personal best, now knowing what to expect on the biggest stage in the country. "[Last year] I got a four-second PB in my 800-metre race and just missed out on the final, finishing ninth overall and ranked number one in Victoria," she said. "I think being my second nationals will definitely help - now I know the amount of pressure and the atmosphere of nationals, compared to normal events in Victoria and how fast everyone runs." Both are ready to represent their state against the best athletes in the land and as they head into their respective events in the form of their lives, you'll want to keep an eye on this pair of Officer Secondary College students.
