"It just sort of happened ... It was never intentional," she said.

"Back in 2012 I previously had done one marathon in Melbourne and then went trekking in Nepal ... I fell in love with the country and I wanted to do the Tenzin Hillary marathon where you trek up to base camp and run a marathon from there."

"That was when the idea started formulating in my, head."

For now, the Oxfam trail which took place over the weekend proved the perfect warm-up, and together with her Oxfam Trailwalker team - The Viking Sisters - Louise raised over $3,500 for those in poverty.

Around 700 teams set off from Lysterfield Lake on Friday 29 March, as part of the 100km Oxfam TrailWalk.

The new Oxfam trail, announced last year, started at Lysterfield Lake and travelled through Ferntree Gully and over Mt Dandenong, before winding through some of Melbourne's leafy eastern suburbs finishing at Fairfield.

Among those who set out at 8am was Upper Ferntree Gully resident Louise Edwards, a marathon runner doing the Oxfam walk for her third time.

Although the trek is daunting for the uninitiated; the 100km walk is just a taster for Louise who will embark on her most challenging endurance marathon at the end of the year.

In December Louise will compete in the Antarctica marathon and join a select group of women who have completed 7 Marathons on 7 Continents.

The Antarctica marathon will mark her seventh and final marathon and she has already completed marathons in Melbourne, Paris, New York, Nepal, Peru and Africa.

Louise told the mail that she never had a desire to do the 7 continents series, and before taking part in it had only ever done one before.

Plan gets reviewed

By Derek Schlennstedt The Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme has undergone its most comprehensive review in 20 years, with three years of community consultation resulting in two major amendments.

Amendment C148 includes changes to the Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS) to provide a clearer strategic direction and guide decisions on a range of land use and development issues. It includes new strategies and addresses emerging planning issues not adequately covered by the current scheme.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said C148 was designed to address current policy gaps, embed council strategies, protect environmental values and make the planning scheme easier for people to use and understand.

"While over the years Council has adopted a number of planning related strategies and plans, many of them have not been formally recognised in the Planning Scheme," Cr Stevenson said.

"Amendment C148 has enabled us to implement those strategies and plans through the Planning Scheme, providing stronger strategic direction to help guide our decision making on a range of land use and development issues.

"Those strategies include the Yarra Ranges Green Wedge Management Plan, Vision 2020

by Design, the Yarra Ranges Economic Devel-

opment Strategy and the Recreation and Open Space Strategy, to name a few."

Amendment C148 includes an updated Environmental Significance Overlay which recognises significant remnant vegetation, habitat corridors and waterways. The amendment also protects rural landscapes by introducing new Significant Landscape Overlays to manage built form and control vegetation removal.

"These overlays are designed to protect the valued landscapes that the Yarra Ranges is renowned for and the reason why people love to live here," Cr Stevenson said.

Cr Stevenson said many redundant policies and controls were removed as part of the review.

"A number of controls are currently buried deeply in the planning scheme. These have been replaced by clearly mapped overlays which are now more visible." he said.

Tenement provisions, which were retained as part of the amendment, will be more transparent in the new planning scheme, and will now appear on planning certificates and electronic planning reports as part of a Special Controls Overlay.

Associated changes to the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Regional Strategy Plan (Amendment 122) were exhibited as part of the C148 amendment process.

Cr Stevenson said Council undertook an extensive review process for C148 which began

back in 2016.

"Community consultation for the amendment began late in 2016, and included community information sessions across Yarra Ranges, targeted consultation and direct notification to rural landholders" he said.

"Council considered public submissions in May 2018 and a Panel Hearing was held in August last year giving community members the opportunity to speak to their submissions. The Panel then prepared a report with recommendations for Council to consider.

"The Panel was generally supportive of the Amendment and recommended Council adopt the amendment subject to a number of changes.

"Council has carefully considered the recommendations of the Panel and issues raised in submissions and has made a decision to adopt Amendment C148 generally as exhibited, but with some changes mainly involving improving the Environmental Significance Overlay mapping and tenement controls."

Cr Stevenson said Council was now preparing to submit the adopted Amendment C148, and the associated Amendment 122 to the Regional Strategy Plan, to the Minister for Planning for approval.

"It's very satisfying to finally adopt this Amendment, and we look forward to the Minister's approval for both Amendments so the proposed changes can be incorporated into the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme."

Best time to join the Upwey Men’s Shed

By Derek Schlennstedt The Upwey Men’s Shed group is calling on men living in the Upwey area to reach out and join the group to take part in social activities and regular meetings.

The group which has more than 50 members, and operates temporarily out of the Upwey Township Hall, has received a small grant through Council’s Small Grants program to kick start their operation to allow older men to take part in meaningful activities in their community.

President Gerran Wright said the $1000 grant would boost their fundraising efforts and help the group to set up, pay for venue hire and insurance.

“The whole idea is that a lot of men tend to retire and find themselves at a loose end,” Mr Wright said.

“Instead of sitting there and vegetating, we’re encouraging people to keep active in the community and to be involved.

“There are community houses in the hills but men’s sheds provide targeted activities directed at men to attract them to participate.

“The Belgrave and Upper Ferntree Gully sheds are currently in smaller facilities and they are at capacity.”

Mr Wright said the group started off late last year following a successful and well attended public meeting.

cility until we find a permanent facility,” he said.

“It will depend what permanent facility we end up building but we do have a few of us who are interested in walking, camping, caravanning and fishing. Many of the sheds have lots of tools where men share their skills and make things at their own pace.

“The bene?ts of a Men’s Shed include decreasing social isolation, learning new skills, enhancing self-esteem, increasing access to health information and health services.”

Council is also supporting the group to find a more permanent location in the Upwey area.

Council’s Small Grants Program offers support for community groups responding to op-

portunities and challenges in their communities.

The program provides funding for activities that facilitate greater social inclusion, wellbeing and participation and foster community leadership and capacity building.

The program is run on a monthly cycle with applications closing on the last calendar day of each month. Applicants are noti?ed whether or not their application was successful about four weeks after the round closes.

Message: Lock your vehicles Yarra Ranges Police are once again reminding people to lock their cars.

The call follows a spate of break-ins in the Yarra Ranges in particular the Upwey and Tecoma surrounds whereby offenders are accessing open vehicles in driveways. The Officer in Charge of Lilydale Crime Scene Services, Sergeant Wayne Hart, said that on one night in March there were more than 15 incidents- all of which were vehicles that had their doors unlocked.

Sergeant Hart said it was frustrating that people were not taking the necessary precautions.

"People really need to be mindful of the valuables they leave in their car and need to be locking their vehicles, no matter where they are parking."

"From a policing perspective it's particularly frustrating that people are leaving their vehicles open with wallets and cash on display."

He urged anyone who sees any persons loitering in driveways or around vehicles late at night or in the early hours, to phone "000" in an Emergency or make contact with their Local Police Station or alternatively phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Highway patrol report At 8:50pm on 25 March a 18-year-old learner driver and his accompanying driver were conveyed to hospital with minor injuries after being involved in a collision at the corner of Glenfern Rd and Napoleon Rd. The 18-year-old probationary driver of the other vehicle was issued with a $322 penalty notice and incurred three demerit points for failing to give way at an intersection.

Fire warning On the evening of March 29 Hoddle Creek CFA responded to a grass and scrub fire in Woori Yallock.

The fire had started near a car at a private property and rapidly spread due to the windy conditions to involved cars, the carport, fencing and the bush.

Gas cylinders exploding were an additional hazard that the crews had to deal with as well.

The crews were able to save the house, sheds, neighbouring buildings, rabbits and other assets such as the gas bullet. The fire also extended into the nearby bush.

The hard work by crews bought this fire under control quickly and kept the fire as small as possible under very difficult conditions.

Wandin Fire Brigade, Seville Rural Fire Brigade, (CFA) Gruyere Fire Brigade, Yarra Junction Fire Brigade, (CFA) Yellingbo Rural Fire Brigade, and Hillcrest Firebrigade attended the incident.

More than a massage A massage parlour in Monbulk was shut down due to suspected illegal activity. ;) It is believed that the massage parlour had only been open for a few months before it caught the attention of police.

Back to the pavilion The new Monbulk football club pavilion was broken into over the weekend, and police say they are reviewing CCTV footage.

It is believed offenders tried to gain entry to the club rooms which are under construction and damaged a roller door to the canteen and another door. Anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious activity is urged to contact Monbulk Police on 9756 6266.

Fire danger still with us While the smoke at Warburton, Woori Yallock and surrounding areas has reduced, it’s important to remember that Yarra Ranges is still in the fire danger period until 1 May. The Fire Danger Period was declared for Yarra Ranges in November last year, meaning you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.

There is still plenty that residents can do to clear their properties, and keep them free of grass, leaves, bark and twigs from around the home, shed and garages, to reduce the fire risk, such as using a green waste bin or taking green waste to your local waste transfer station (for a fee).

with the fire in the Upper Yarra Catchment area.

Bushfires near Reefton, Armstrong and Upper Yarra Catchments are still burning weeks later and residents in our neighbouring municipality of Cardinia are recovering after losing some properties as a result of the Bunyip State Park fire in early March.

I would like to thank all the fire fighting services and supporting agencies, for their unwavering efforts to get the fires under control and keep our communities safe.

The 500 or so residents who attended the Warburton community information meetings showed resilience and supported one another by working with agencies and sharing vital in-

formation within their communities.

Connected business man of the Belgrave district some 100 years ago, Charlie Hammond left a huge legacy: his photographs and eccentric artworks help us to better understand our history. The April meeting of the Sherbrooke Foothills Historical Society meeting will be a presentation by Terry Russell on Charlie Hammond of “Winscombe”. Charlie (or Chas to his friends) cleared the bush and built “Winscombe” at Tecoma in 1912 and he died there in 1953.

Charlie, a gifted artist in drawing, painting, photography and author, left his legacy in an enormous pictorial diary of 13 volumes, the Charlie Hammond sketchbooks. Charlie was well known in his lifetime and Terry aims to reintroduce him to a new generation. By Michael Doran For some time, Parks Victoria have said the Badger Weir Picnic Ground is scheduled to reopen to the public in March and the dedicated members of the Badger Creek Community Planning Group (BCCPG) are taking matters into their own hands to try to make that happen.

A group of 20 are spending Saturday 23 March putting the finishing touches to the Picnic Ground area in readiness to reopen and Doris Pozzi from the BCCPG said that they are responding to a request from Parks Victoria to lend a hand.

"They asked us to organise a group of 20 to help with the last stages of getting the park ready," she said. "Parks Victoria (PV) have done all of the big infrastructure work and we are mulching the garden beds, doing some pruning and cleaning up because that is not part of their budget allocation."

"We formed a relationship with PV and when their local person came out and talked to our group we found out why it was taking longer than we thought it would. One of the reasons was because they wanted to get more money to make some improvements that were not part of the repair work funding."

Doris said the community is incredibly enthusiastic to get this done and when the group posted that the park was opening in early 2019 their facebook page had 2000 likes, shares and comments, a clear indicator of the affection the community has for the park.

"There is something a bit special about this park and its closure has been a huge issue for a lot of people, many have been quite upset about it," she said. "I think it made it hard for local people to have a place to take their kids and go for picnics and evening walks as this place is visited constantly in the summer.

"For everybody, the degree of contact with the park very high and it's not like a day trip to the botanical gardens. It's almost like an extension of their backyard and for most that's how they see it, they expect to come here whenever they want to."

The Dandenong Ranges has been selected as the first battleground in a CSIRO-led fight to save rainforests across Australia from a devastating weed known as Wandering Trad.

Local community groups have been battling this invasion for many years and it was an excited group that gathered in Emerald on Friday 23 March to hear the good news.

The CSIRO has been involved in research on Wandering Trad biocontrol since 2014 and field biologist Dr Ben Gooden is coordinating the rollout of the biocontrol program across Australia.

He said that highly targeted and tested biocontrol agents are a more environmentally sustainable option than other available tools.

"Currently, the only tools available to the community and local councils against the weed are hand-pulling and chemical herbicides, which only bring short-term control and have the unintended consequence of killing native plants and disrupting complex rainforest ecosystems."

Speaking at the announcement, Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said that without the work of the community groups getting to this point would not have been possible.

"It's great to come along and be involved in the announcement considering how many years it has taken us to get here," he said. "For me this is one of those days I didn't think would ever come."

"Over the last five or six years I have pushed the federal government to put in over $6m supporting environment groups for weed control in the area and that's made a huge difference, but it needs science to come in and support that."

"The scientists at the CSIRO are so passionate and their tenacity is amazing," he said.

"Their attitude is that if you give us the funding we will dedicate our heart and souls to find the solution."

Bill Incoll is a committee member of the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs and said he had been looking forward to this day for years.

Ironwoman taking on MD

By Derek Schlennstedt Laura Healy from Selby will be using all of her muscles to support people living with muscular dystrophy, when she takes part in this year's Cairns Ironman.

Ms Healy will be competing in the Cairns Ironman on June 9, completing a 3.9km swim, 180km bike ride, and finishing with a 42.2km run.

Ms Healy said it was her brothers that inspired her to take up the challenge.

"My passion for health and fitness stems from my family situation."

"Every day I see my brothers Matt & Rob who have no control or no choice over their health or their bodies, and I believe those that do have the ability to, should take full advantage of that.""I decided I needed to make this Ironman achievement more than just a goal

for me to achieve, but also use it as a way to make a difference and raise funds for the exact reason why I'm so driven to take on a big goal like this."

Parking for the public badly needed at primary school "I have heard the concerns of the parents at Menzies Creek Primary School and in consultation with the Yarra Ranges Council, I am thrilled that we have successfully secured this funding which will allow for the development of an 18-bay carpark within the unused road reserve directly across from the school."

"The school community considers that a new carpark on this road reserve could be used for staff vehicles; thereby freeing up the existing parking at the front of the school for the pick-up and drop-off of children."

Over the years there has been a growing concern among the school community for the safety of their children due to the lack of a formal parking area.

This, coupled with high school traffic, as a result of increasing enrolments, and tourist

traffic making its way to Puffing Billy Station has meant that the situation has become untenable.

School Council president, Rowan Coxhead, said the new car space would help to alleviate the problem.

"Over the last 6 years the school population has gone from about 140 kids to 250, that causes the parking to spread further and further up the hill and causes a lot of congestion and sometimes safety issues with people trying to navigate that, so it's been quite a challenge for the school and school council," he said.

"What this should do is get the vast majority of the teacher's car off the road which frees up a lot more room for the parents."

Drive past Menzies Creek primary school during school hours and you'll see hundreds of cars lining the side of the road.

With no official car park, the school, which has increased in student size, has a burgeoning parking problem.

On Wednesday 27 March, Tony Smith, and Yarra Ranges Council resoundingly responded to that problem announcing $80,000 in funding for an 18 bay car park located directly opposite the school.

Member for Casey, Tony Smith made the announcement which will be delivered by Council in the next 12 months.

"You've had a problem here, and it's a growing problem because you are a successful school and attract more students and you have to be supported in that," Mr Smith said.

Registration renewal notices will be sent to residents throughout April and will be due for payment before Friday 10 May 2019. Council requires up-to-date contact and pet ownership information to correctly send these notices to residents.

Residents who have moved house or postal address, who have a new pet, or whose pet has recently passed away, can update their contact and pet details online at www.cardin-

ia.vic.gov.au/petdetails All pets need to be microchipped before they can be registered. Residents should ensure their pet is microchipped and that their microchip details are up-to-date with Central Animal Records. Pet owners can check and update microchip information online at www. car.com.au The Victorian Government sets the fees for pet registration, which vary depending on a number of factors.

Pet owners can register dogs and cats aged three months or younger (with written proof of age) free for the first year.

three months of age start from $40.40. A flat fee of $22.40 applies for all pet registrations for eligible pension concession cardholders.

It is cheaper to register a pet if it is de-sexed and under law, all cats must be de-sexed before they can be registered.

Since I have lived on the mountain my love for the lyre birds in our village has grown to immeasurable levels.

It is not uncommon when I drive to work in the mist of the early mornings that I have the pleasure of seeing these majestic birds strolling leisurely across the road returning from their dawn walk in the national park.

I often need to stop my car while Lenny and Lena (my pet names for them) slowly traverse my path which gives me no end of pleasure.

At the beginning of this week however I was confronted with seeing Lenny on the side of the road.

I did not believe what I was confronted with, without knowing I pulled over to the side of the road sobbing my heart out loudly.

Lenny's limp blue feathered body was just discarded in the gutter as if he did not matter.

How, why, Lenny matters to me. Lenny was and is part of my tribe.

I shared my experience with the people who knew of my love for Lenny and Lena consoling each other whilst making sense of the situation in a philosophical manner.

The week continued, my busy work, study and life schedule continued and my early morning drives to work continued but this morning was transformational.

As I drove past the arboretum my heart skipped a beat when I saw Lena walking across the road strutting proudly. I sent her blessings as I drove past her slowly only to stop again quickly as six of her chicks were walking ahead also crossing the road. I thought my heart would burst with joy and love but also feeling a tinge of sadness that Lenny was not there to be part of this picture.

Life as we know it presents us with many lessons and as humans we are sent into many emotional spins hurling through different parallels of love, loss and life and for this I am eternally grateful.

Where are the women of the Belgrave Roundabout?

Every Saturday morning a group of women stand at the Belgrave roundabout armed with placards and banners.

Their aim is to raise awareness of the plight of people languishing on Manus and Nauru seeking freedom and safety by asking drivers to "Honk for Humanity and Decency".

Where were they on Saturday? We missed them. Perhaps they were protesting elsewhere.

Committed to turn up every Saturday, rain, hail or shine, their efforts are paying off as apparently there has been an increase in toots and honks from drivers. Clearly the public is becoming concerned about the treatment of refugees by our government.

Come back ladies, we need you to remind us about those needing our compassion and support to ensure safe settlement.

The new Belgrave Motors?

There has been an ominous silence for some time as to the proposed development of the New Belgrave Motors site in Belgrave.

I am wondering if the owner of the land, and our Shire Planners, have given any thought to using the land to build residential accommodation for independent seniors. There is a clear and increasing need for such accommodation for Hills residents who love living in the area but who are unable to manage their own block of land. A multi-storey community of units built on this site, with car parking spaces beneath and elevator access to the road, would provide residents with ready access to shops, cafes, public transport, health facilities etc.

I believe that such a use would be of far greater community benefit than another supermarket and more shops: from the vacancies in the street we have an over-abundance of these already.

Pinks Reserve beats rain

By Jed Lanyon Through rain, hail or shine, netball will always be played at Kilsyth's Pinks Reserve thanks to new netball court covers.

The new giant structure acts as a permanent cover for two existing netball courts and gives plenty of undercover space for surrounding spectators.

Over 2500 members of the Lilydale and Yarra Valley Netball Association, including interschool sport competitions and the local community will benefit from the new courts that will allow play to continue through harsh rain and extreme heat.

Deputy Premier James Merlino, Member for Evelyn Bridget Vallence, Member for Croydon David Hodgett and Yarra Ranges Councillor Len Cox joined Lilydale and Yarra Valley Netball Association president Simon Grimes for the official opening of the new netball court covers.

Mr Grimes said that the association had raised $800,000 alone, while $200,000 was contributed from the state government through the Pick My Project initiative and $132,000 from the local council.

"It helps us because one of the main difficulties is cancellations to games," Mr Grimes said.

"What this does is allows the girls to play, it keeps them on the court and keeps them involved."

The structure shelters two courts and allows natural light to shine through.

Ms Vallence said this project would be a significant boost for sport and women playing sport.

"The beneficiaries are the girls and women who play here," she said.

"I've come down here a couple of times on a Saturday and we were here on a day when it was

teeming down with rain and you could see the girls on the side of the court were disappointed.

"They were disappointed because they had come and they wanted to play, they were ready to play, but they couldn't because of the rain," said Ms Vallence.

The netball association received bipartisan support from political parties to build covers for several other courts in the future.

Cr Cox marvelled at the size of the structure and said, "It's a heck of a lot bigger than I thought it was ever going to be ... It's very spectacular, it looks terrific."

The new covers feature allows natural light to shine through as well as stadium lighting to improve night play.

Off-road drive doesn’t go to plan in 4WD rollover

From a personal perspective, the births of our two sons - Ben and Sam. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

So much to do at zoo There’s plenty to see and do at Mansfield Zoo, including meeting all of the animals or you can even camp overnight if you’re game.

If you love animals and a fun family day out, Mansfield Zoo is the place to go, and the meerkats have recently arrived too.

The zoo features a large menagerie of native and animals from around the world including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (capuchins, marmosets, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats and plenty more.

The Zoo Keeper feeding tour is a great time to be at Mansfield Zoo. The four lions are fed at 1.30pm each weekend and Victorian school and public holidays, followed by feeding of the Meerkat Mob. Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingoes who walk around with a keeper while the lions are being fed.

You can celebrate a memorable New Years Eve with lion feeding at 7.30pm and the Zoo open until 10pm, great for families looking for something different.

Us is a chilling, tightly-written horror film from Jordan Peele, the Oscar-winning writer-director of Get Out. While on vacation in Santa Cruz, Adelaide (Lupita Nyong'o) and her family must fend off a group of sadistic doppelgangers.

Us is a hard-hitting allegory for the insidious effects of mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder. As the Tethered doppelgangers hunt and toy with their prey, and Red (Nyong'o) bitterly recounts the suffering she endured while Adelaide and her family prospered, the doppelgangers become living avatars of impostor syndrome and feelings of self-loathing and inadequacy.

Every major cast member delivers a striking double-act, portraying their scared ordinary selves and their wry, feral counterparts. The film steadily builds to the doppelgangers' attack, with Adelaide's growing unease and certain bizarre coincidences setting the stage. The family's struggle to survive is palpable, and the narrative contains some brilliant foreshadowing, with seemingly innocuous actions coming into play later in the plot.

Us becomes somewhat overambitious with its climactic twists. Revelations of a government conspiracy and an early switch are intriguing in the moment, but do muddy the powerful allegory running through much of the film.

Despite a slightly misjudged ending, Us is a macabre, gripping film about the vicious effects of mental trauma.

Hundreds of riders are expected to tackle the jumps and bumps at the Lilydale Conquer the Valley BMX competition on April 7.

The Conquer the Valley competition is the biggest event of the year at Lilydale BMX Club, which will have local, state and even interstate riders testing themselves against the best in the sport.

Club president, Ian Henderson, said that the Lilydale event will be a great hit-out for riders ahead of the National Championships to be held in May in Shepparton.

"For some elite competitors, the National Championships are key to being able to represent Australia at the World Championships as well as the Olympics next year."

Lilydale BMX Club's Julie Urben di Giamo and Connor Fallon, both 14-years-old, and current State Champions will be amongst a huge contingent of riders from across the country, competing for the greatest of BMX prizes.

Attracting over 1000 people, both riders and spectators alike flock to the popular competition.

Committee Member at Lilydale BMX club, Rob Fallon, said that BMX has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia and is one of the few sports where total family participation can take place.

Total family participation is exactly what spectators can expect at this year's event with the competition ranging from kids as young as three, to veteran riders over 50-years-old.

Hundreds of riders are expected to tackle the jumps and bumps at the Lilydale Conquer the Valley BMX competition.

"We've had rapid expansion since 2012 when the track underwent a restoration project and now have entire families riding."

"This competition is open to boys and girls, kids and adult's ... our youngest riders are what we call mini wheels and are 3-years-old. Older riders are in the veteran category and are over 50 ... everyone gives it a red hot go though."

Conquer the Valley takes place from 10.30am - 2pm, Sunday, 27 May, at the Lilydale BMX club.

Monbulk bowlers win it

By Eric Markham Monbulk 2 won all their section and division finals to be crowned Division 7 metropolitan champions and premiers for the 2018/19 season.

In the quarter final Monbulk played Keysborough at Boronia and quickly established a handy lead.

Peter Francis' rink was 10 shots in front after four ends with some excellent front end bowling from Anne Ward and Matt Borkowski, backed up by Alan Brooke and the skipper.

This rink went on to record a convincing win by 16 shots, 30 to 14.

Case Broekhof's rink maintained control from the first bowl with contributions from all team members Andy Smith, Lorraine McLaren and Jim Bras to win by 30 shots, 36 to 6.

Graeme Goller's rink led by as much as 12 shots after the twelfth end, but eased up in the last four ends where they dropped 9 shots and just got over the line by 1 shot, 20 to 19.

Eric Furby's rink met some stiff opposition and trailed by 10 shots after eleven ends.

They then mounted a challenge to get within 3 shots with three ends to go, but eventually lost by 5 shots, 16 to 21.

The overall result was a win to Monbulk by 26 shots, 95 to 69.

Monbulk then played the semi-final against Sunshine RSL at MCC Hawthorn.

Monbulk grabbed control on three of the four rinks right from the start and ran out crushing winners by 77 shots, 125 to 48.

Eric Furby's rink only lost 5 ends for the game and gained many multiples including a seven to win by 36 shots, 42 to 6.

Graeme Goller's rink grabbed control after the fourth end when scores were level at 4 shots each.

They then had some excellent bowling from their lead Eric Walsh, second Don Barnetson and their third Jim Anderson, backed up by skip Graeme Goller to win by 26 shots, 34 to 8.

Peter Francis' rink struggled against some good opposition bowling to go down by 15 shots, 13 to 28.

Monbulk with their Division 7 Premiers flag. were Rosamund Bowling Club and the match was played at Darebin Bowling Club which was the venue for bowls in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

The game was a tight contest early with little separating the rinks.

Monbulk gradually edged ahead with Eric

Furby's rink getting on top of its opposition to win by 13 shots, 27 to 14.

Graeme Goller's rink finished strongly to win by 9 shots, 23 to 14.

Little separated Case Broekhof's rink for most of the match, but they were able to hold their nerve and win by 2 shots, 17 to 15.

Peter Francis' rink had a very close battle with all ends being decided by two shots or less.

Peter's rink with John Prudon back playing as a third lost by 2 shots, 13 to 15.

Overall, Monbulk won by 22 shots, 80 to 58 and were crowned Division Seven premiers which was a mighty effort.

Athletes awarded for season efforts at presentations

By Jamie Strudley Yarra Ranges Athletics recognised the outstanding efforts of all Little Athletics athletes on the weekend with the annual presentation day.

Plenty of fun and games, combined with food and treats made for a fantastic day.

The event was held at Yarra Hills Secondary School gym, which made the day much cosier and drier.

Congratulations to all the recipients of awards including club champions, age group personal best awards and all other awards.

Ky Harris and Steph Van Bemmel, were the recipients of the Petra Sank and Don Cruse perpetual trophies.

Fourteen club athletes have been selected to represent Victoria at the Australian Track and Field Championships to be held in Sydney this week.

Upwey South won Ultra Around the World competition by scoring 364 continuous ball exchanges, making them the winners for the entire whole Asia Pacific Region.

During 2018, Wilson ran a global competition called the Ultra around the World Record (UATWR) attempt, and only recently Upwey South Tennis Club was notified that they were one of a few winners.

The around the world challenge asked tennis teams around the world to have as many ball exchanges on a single tennis court as possible, using the singles lines on the court.

The challenge is that on each side of the court only two Wilson Ultra rackets are in use and after each exchange the racket needs to be

handed over to the next player in line. Upon handing over of the racket, the player runs to the other end of the court and gets in the back of the line.

This process continues until a player hits a ball in the net or out of the singles lines on the court.

Upwey South won the competition by scoring 364 continuous ball exchanges, making them the winners for entire whole Asia Pacific Region.

The reward for winning the competition was a huge tennis party which took place on 23 March at the Upwey South Tennis Club. mailcommunity.com.au

Bowling like never before

By Jed Lanyon South Belgrave Cricket Club players are bowling like never before thanks to the four new 40 metre long, cricket nets recently installed.

South Belgrave Cricket Club president Trevor Miller said the new nets were much safer to train with and also provided one public lane for community use.

"The old nets were very run down and the run up was on the roadway causing a safety issue for players," Mr Miller said.

"The club is very happy with the result and the players have provided a lot of positive feedback about their ability to use the new nets for training.

The state government's Cricket Facilities Fund provided $50,000 to the project through the 2018/19 Cricket Facilities Fund, council provided $27,000 through the Capital Works program and the club provided $45,000 via their building fund.

State Member for Monbulk James Merlino said he would like to congratulate the club president and club committee for their advocacy efforts in obtaining the funding.

"This new facility will increase safety for players as well as allowing greater accessibility for members of the club and our community," Mr Merlino said.

"I'd like to thank the club committees from previous years, for having the foresight to develop a building fund."

Mr Miller thanked the local Ward Councillor Mike Clarke and Mr Merlino for guiding the club through the advocacy process.

Cr Clarke said the club had done an excellent job in managing the project and advocating for funding.

Cr Clarke said it was wonderful to see the resurfacing of the netball courts at Belgrave South Recreation Reserve nearly complete.

"The netball club will soon enjoy playing on the high quality surfaced courts with two

South Belgrave Cricket Club players alongside Monbulk State MP James Merlino and Ward Councillor Mike Clarke practice courts overlaid and two competition courts," Cr Clarke said.

"Multiple clubs including Selby, Belgrave and Belgrave South play here and will have the

ability to train at night."

New lighting installed recently was funded by $40,000 from council, while the state government's Sport and Recreation Victoria pro-

vided $30,000 via the Country Football Netball Program.

The netball court upgrade will be completed by the start of the netball season.
