Mindful investing The federal government will invest $4.5 million over three years to support the mental health of young Australians in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

The funding will help establish an integrated Youth Health Hub, which will include a headspace service, through the Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network.

The hub will bring together local existing

services, making it easier for young people in the area to access vital mental health and general health services.

Member for Casey, Tony Smith announced the funding at the Yarra Ranges Council and welcomed the establishment of a joint Youth Health Hub and headspace service.

"This announcement will help address the growing needs around youth mental health in our area where almost a third of the population is under 20 years old."

"A Youth Health Hub and headspace in Lilydale will deliver more health care resources for the Casey electorate and importantly, lead to improved service co-ordination."

"I will be working with Yarra Ranges Council and other community organisations to ensure a suitable site for the hub is found quickly," Mr Smith said.

Exhibition is launched

By Derek Schlennstedt The annual Dandenong Ranges Open Studios Group Exhibition was officially launched at Sherbrooke Art Gallery on 21 March.

The group exhibition aspect of Open Studios is designed to produce a cohesive and diverse range of artwork to showcase the creative energy and skill of each artist.

The 2019 title 'alchemy' refers to the in-

stinctual ability of an artist to turn nothing into a work of creative expression.

Over 25 local artists are involved in this year's Open Studios, and all their unique designs and work can now be seen at the group exhibition located at the Sherbrooke Art Gallery until 22 April.

There are knife makers, sculptors and painters each with their own different perspective on how to represent 'Alchemy'.

Turtles are usually found close to large bodies of water, but resident Robyn Kus noticed one out of its element when she was driving home and saw it crossing the Beaconsfield-Emerald road.

On her way home to Emerald on 19 march Ms Kus spied the turtle crossing the Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

She said that once the turtle was safely across the road he/she was very obliging in allowing her to take a photo.

OPINION I live in Moxhams Rd Monbulk. On Sunday I arrived home to discover my letter box missing. I reported it to the local police who told me someone from Forest Rd reported that they had found it hanging from their street sign.

The letter box had been snapped off at the base. This constitutes wilful damage which is punishable by a jail term or by a fine. I've heard it said that some of the youth in the area are guilty of minor offences, but that these are basically "good kids". Perhaps the lesson that needs to be reinforced here by parents, teachers and other community groups is that it's NOT ok to vandalise property. It is disrespectful and causes the property owner great inconvenience. Having said all that, I can't prove that this act was carried out by local youth.

Surely we can do better.

A question of trust Hang on! Hang on here a minute: is this Bill Shorten bloke for real when he, in effect, says to all Australians, "You can all, trust me with Australia's economy and border protection." Is Bill Shorten, saying he won't change existing monetary/tax policies forcing interest

rates up for business and workers alike (thus, wiping out any wage rises; and many workers' jobs)? And a Shorten Govt won't alter Australia's proven border protection laws: resulting in again, more drowning's at sea (including so many, children); and many more illegal immigrants (throwing away passports, etc.) draining the everyday Aussie taxpayer for ever and a day?

Well now: Bill Shorten, is not only a man, who has changed his footy team but also his religion! So I ask how on Earth can you ever, trust a bloke who has not only changed his religion; but trust a bloke, who has also, changed his ... footy team!

Gun control John Howard's gun buy-back was nothing more than a political stunt, like the economics of his Alice Springs to Darwin railway, it did not stack up. There are nearly as many guns in Australia now as in Howard's era and with the advent of computer 3D modelling any one can create a pistol/handgun.

Jacinda Ardern would do well to restrict it to one handgun per household. Gun control is about the right mental approach not like America where buying a gun is like buying

a packet of chips. In the country she could allow no more than 5 rifles /shotgun per household, and all weapons must be registered on a computer based register.

Local kids cleaning the Watts River On behalf of the Healesville community I would like to thank the hard-working group of kids who took it upon themselves to clean and tidy the Watts River adjoining Coronation Park last Saturday morning (March 23rd).

This admirable initiative was instigated by Marleah who is a student at Chum Creek Primary School, and she was joined by many of her peers and their siblings as well as some other students from Healesville, Badger Creek and St. Brigids Primary Schools. The amount of rubbish they collected from the river and its surrounding area was startling!

These young people have displayed true community spirit and should be acknowledged for their environmental stewardship, initiative and diligence.

Well done, kids - I couldn't be more proud.

Dunn and dusted

By Derek Schlennstedt Former Victorian Greens MP Samantha Dunn announced her resignation from the party on 14 March saying that her decision was made due to a "toxic" culture within the party ranks.

Ms Dunn, who was a Yarra Ranges Councillor up until 2014 was the Upper House MP for the Eastern Metropolitan region for a single term - losing her seat at the 2018 election.

In a scathing post on Facebook, Ms Dunn denied her decision to quit was triggered by her election loss.

"I didn't resign because I lost my seat ... I resigned because the Greens are too toxic to be part of my life anymore," she said "The standard you walk by is the standard you accept, and I'm not prepared to walk by and accept any more of the culture, behaviours and practice I see in the Greens.

"The Greens are distracted by populism, self-interest, power, ego, narcissism, megalomania ... while exercising that old-war strategy of divide and conquer."

Ms Dunn was previously a Yarra Ranges Shire Councillor, representing the Lyster Ward from 2005 until her election to the Upper House in 2014.

She joined the Greens in 2004 inspired by founder Bob Brown's stance against the Iraq war and her passion for the environment and action on climate change.

In her Facebook post she reflected on her achievements, though admitted since joining the Greens their values no longer suit her own."I will always be proud of my achievements as the first Green elected at Yarra Ranges Shire Council and in the Eastern Metropolitan Region" she said.

Former Victorian Greens MP Samantha Dunn announced her resignation from the party on 14 March.

"I've always been passionate about the environment, stopping logging and action on climate change, long before the Greens were a thing.

"The Greens were a pretty good fit in terms of policy and values. The Greens still are a pretty good fit in terms of policy and values, but there's a problem ... concerningly many Greens in leadership, governance and representative positions don't act in a way consistent with those values, the standard they walk

by and accept is at complete odds with those values."

She said she would still be an environmental activist despite her resignation.

"I won't be going away any time soon, I'll be still out there fighting for environment, stopping logging and action on climate change ...

If there's one thing I know for sure, once an environmental activist, always an environmental activist."

Vandals steal BMX bikes and trash rooms

By Jed Lanyon Vandals have trashed Kilsyth BMX clubrooms, while stealing four expensive bikes, a leaf blower and even sausage rolls earlier this month.

Following the weekend of 1-2 March, Eastfield BMX club members arrived to find significant damage to their clubrooms.

Eastfield BMX secretary Joh Schaap estimates the value of the lost bikes between $1500-2000.

The vandals were able to enter the rooms by tearing through tin and insulation on an office wall and then manage to force down a door and break into the locked bike room.

They attempted to steal a ride-on lawn mower but abandoned it in the car park outside.

"My daughter was there when we got the call we were quiet shocked and sad because it's their club ... We were shocked that someone would do that," Ms Schaap said.

Ms Schaap said that a lot of the members at the club are younger and that they are now at a disadvantage due to the theft of the bikes.

Ms Schaap said that the wall had been temporarily patched while waiting for it to be properly fixed by the council.

Emerald police officers patrolling the burnt out Bunyip State Park came across a very thirsty koala on March 18.

The Koala was very happy to have a drink from one of the officer's drink bottles.

The story didn't end there though, and following the well-deserved drink, Police officers contacted local group Warriors 4 Wildlife.

Thanks to some strategically placed police tape where the koala was hanging out; the group were able to quickly locate a female koala. The female will be in the care of Wildlife Warriors over the next few days as they treat her for sore eyes and dehydration before being re-released.

Only a few days later though, and there was another twist in the story when officers from Emerald Police Station went out to have another look. The members who gave the koala a drink were adamant that the koala was a 'he' and was not the koala that was rescued the day before.

Upon some investigation the officers were found to be correct and located him in his same police-taped-tree. It turns out that Warriors 4 Wildlife had rescued his partner the day before.

So, Warriors 4 Wildlife went back out with assistance from local police and a tree climber to finally locate the original thirsty koala.

Upon rescuing him carers found he had suffered burns to all his paws and scorched fur, though it is understood that he will make a full recovery in care and be reunited with his lady friend, rescued the day before.

The search is still on for the four stolen bikes.

"The bikes have serial numbers like cars do but they haven't appeared yet," Ms Schaap hopes that someone will recog-

nise the stolen bikes and inform the police.

Eastfield BMX Club has pleaded to those involved to return the stolen bikes to the club.

Due to overwhelming demand, Rone will be releasing a very limited batch of tickets to Empire at Burnham Beeches.

These tickets are for a newly added 5.30pm session running Thursday - Saturday only.

These will be the last available opportunities to experience EMPIRE before the mansion is returned to its former state, and the exhibition dismantled.

Lilydale - and Queen Vic Royal Influence While the debate for a republic continues in Australia, locally Lilydale would be a totally different place today were it not for Queen Victoria who ruled from 1837 to 1901.

To celebrate the Queen's Diamond (60th) Jubilee in June 1897, one simple event occurred in Lilydale on June 25, 1897 - the creation of the Queen's Jubilee Avenue of trees along Main Street.

Heavy frost fell overnight but the sun shone brightly when shortly before 11am Lillydale Shire President Cr W. H. Smith planted the first tree an oak, at the Olinda Creek, and declared it a red letter day in the history of Lilydale.

He said the planting of the avenue of trees was a lasting memento of the loyalty, respect and admiration of the residents of Lilydale and the district to the Queen and it would be "a

The residents were charged with watching over the trees to prevent them being damaged by mischievous boys or wandering cattle.

Cr Smith said caring for the trees should be a labour of love, would become an object of pride and in years to come future generations

and visitors would look back and remember the year 1897.

Then each councillor and many residents of the town planted their tree along the avenue which extended westwards to Cave Hill Road.

The Lilydale Express of June 25, 1897 recorded the names and location of each tree planted.

This celebration was the realization of Edward Janson's two-year dream of planting trees in the town's main streets to make it more attractive to visitors, create shade and suppress the dust.

The owner of The Towers, he organised the annual Arbor Days through to the 1920s.

Each year, the townspeople and school children planted out Lilydales many streets.

His contribution was honoured when later

an additional sign - Janson Memorial Avenue was added west of the railway line.

The avenue is on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Over the years, some trees have died and been replaced, many grown from the stock of original trees.

Our street trees are a key feature of Lilydale but are continually under threat from developments such as the impending Lilydale railway crossing removal, multi- unit residential developments and car parking.

Footnote: Continuing the tradition in 2012 the society organized the planning of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee tree in Melba park.

Funding set for Fairpark

By Derek Schlennstedt The Federal Member for Aston, Alan Tudge announced $3 million for a new Multipurpose Community Hub at Fairpark Reserve in Ferntree Gully, on Friday 22 February.

The current pavilion will be developed into a community hub facility to cater for the needs of the diverse range of locals clubs including Fairpark Football Club, Fairpark Netball Club, Johnson Park Cricket Club and Knox U3A. Knox U3A will supplement their present headquarters into the new hub. The Community Hub will include Men and women's change rooms, showers, toilets, umpires room, storage rooms, social room, kitchen, a multipurpose hall & several classrooms.

This will cater for sporting activities held by the sporting clubs, leisure activities run by U3A Knox and other community activities.

Mr Tudge said the much needed development of the current pavilion, built in 1978, will benefit over 1500 people facility who will use the new facility.

The Federal Member for Aston, Alan Tudge announced $3 million for a new Multipurpose Community Hub at Fairpark Reserve in Ferntree Gully.

"The existing facilities are well past their usedby date, having been built forty years ago," he said.

"There are no girls change rooms, poor disability access, and insufficient space for its needs."

"Knox U3A - one the largest groups in Knox - is bursting at its current headquarters and the construction of new rooms will help U3A continue to thrive."

The $3m will fund brand new facilities to meet the needs of the entire community -football, cricket, netball and Knox U3A.

Masterplan for Gembrook

By Breanna Taylor The dilapidated timber skeleton of Gembrook's Leisure Park is set to receive a huge $1.5 million makeover, transforming it into one of Melbourne's most innovative playgrounds.

Cr Jeff Springfield released the finalised masterplans at Monday's council meeting on March 18, calling the development "next level," and thanked state and federal governments for their generous funding.

Careful consideration was taken to update the initial draft after 156 members of the public expressed their opinion in an online survey.

The park, described by Cr Springfield as "broken down and dangerous", was created as a community project back in the 2000's and has been widely popular amongst locals since its construction.

Cr Leticia Wilmot said that the reconstruction of the play area, "will be fantastic for the region, not just the township" and will increase public attraction not only to the park but to Gembrook and surrounding suburbs.

Community consultation was a highly important factor in planning the new playground with four local primary schools and Emerald Secondary College encouraged to share what they believed were necessary additions.

No burn-offs yet - fire restrictions remaining in place Despite summer coming to a close, the CFA wants to make sure the public remain aware that fire restrictions have not yet been lifted.

CFA District 13 Acting Operations Manager Tim Holland said there a number of large fires continuing to burn across the state, with some smaller fires keeping firefighters on fire grounds for weeks.

"Although we have experienced some cooler days during the beginning of March, this has not been accompanied by any meaningful rainfall and the landscape is still exceptionally dry," he said. "Under these conditions, the lighting of fires in the open places the community at considerable risk."

Women’s day is a winner

By Derek Schlennstedt Parents and carers of children at Belgrave Kindergarten acknowledged International Woman's Day on Friday 8 March by surprising their muchloved teachers, Marion Prince and Janet Muhle.

During the last quarter hour of the threeyear-old group's session, parents thanked the teachers and gave them gifts of appreciation.

International Woman's Day is an annual worldwide event held every year on 8 March.

This year's campaign theme was 'Balance For Better,' with an emphasis on a more gender balanced world.

Current parent committee member, Caroline Stiglec, observed that kindergarten teach-

ing is one of the most important jobs in our society and that young girls and boys should be encouraged to consider early childhood education as a challenging and rewarding career path.

A short children's storytime session included stories about female trailblazers in science, sport and paleontology, and acknowledged the efforts and successes of previous generations of women.

Marion Prince, who has been the Kindergarten Teacher at Belgrave Kindergarten for over 20 years, said she appreciated the gesture from the parents and would continue to foster gender equality in the kindergarten programs at Belgrave Kindergarten.

Yarra Ranges Council is running a feasibility study on a proposal for affordable housing for older women and people with a disability in Lilydale, following conversations with the community.

Councillors endorsed Housing First, in partnership with Melba Support Services, as Council's social housing advisors during the feasibility study, at a recent meeting.

Housing First will work alongside Six Degrees Architects to undertake the study.

The study, which will run until mid-November, will look at different densities for the site at 67-69 Anderson Street, such as having 12-20 units on the site, and other issues such as vegetation and traffic.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, said that, if the project goes ahead, it would provide vital housing for people with disability and older single women who are at high risk of homelessness.

"These are two groups in our community who are at high risk of housing stress and being in insecure housing, and finding stable alternatives in this area is not easy or affordable," Cr Stevenson said.

"We're committed to doing what we can to increase housing affordability, and this is a great opportunity to explore using Councilowned land for suitable housing developments that will help some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

"We're also advocating for reforms to the state planning policies, so affordable housing must be included in large-scale developments.

"This feasibility study will give us concept plans for the site, will look at reducing the scale of development, address parking and traffic issues and protecting the heritage and significant trees, giving us a full picture of what can be done with this block."

The feasibility study's first stage began in mid-February, with a physical assessment of the site and the traffic needs around it and Arborist and geotechnical investigations.

Cr Stevenson said consultation will be a key part of the feasibility study and residents will be given opportunities to understand the project in more detail and learn about social housing and wider housing issues in Yarra Ranges that affect many people.

"Affordable housing is an important issue right across the state, and we're not immune to it in the Yarra Ranges," Cr Stevenson said.

"This site gives us a good opportunity to investigate providing high-quality, well-designed housing for vulnerable people in our community, close to public transport, services, shops and parks.

"We're looking forward to working with Housing First, Melba Support Services and our consultant Six Degrees and getting some more information and concepts back to the community about mid-year."

After the study has finished, the proposal will return to Council to determine what's next.

Getting colder Cold War Starring Joanna Kulig and Tomasz Kot Rated M Cold War is a sombre, elegant but unfocused Polish historical drama about Polish singer Zuzanna (Joanna Kulig) and her lover and producer Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) as they weather a turbulent relationship in an equally-turbulent mid-twentieth-century Europe.

Cold War draws powerfully upon parallels for Zuzanna's tragic journey. In Eastern Europe, Zuzanna resents her forced participation in saccharine choral pieces about Stalin and Communism, but after escaping to Paris, she resents the inane lyrics and commercialisation in her new singing career, and Wiktor, who also fled Poland, becomes deceitful and controlling.

Brought to life with stark black-and-white cinematography, post-war Poland and Paris are dramatically different settings - Poland is rustic and austere but defined by lively folk music, while Paris is affluent and literally jazzy - but wherever she goes, Zuzanna cannot escape exploitation.

Unfortunately, Wiktor has little function in the narrative, serving only as an intermittent lover and obstacle for Zuzanna, and the film has severe pacing problems.

Cold War is a languid, character-based journey full of pathos, but it abruptly jumps across years and countries at a time, leaving crucial context behind. Zuzanna's frustration and despair are palpable in a riveting central performance from Kulig, but these disorienting transitions - often shifting from oppression to relative freedom without explanation - sap the film of tension.

Cold War is a poignant, bleakly beautiful film, but the jarring cuts and sparse details render it a moderately frustrating watch.

Back to back flags won

By Chris Anderson Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock have completed back to back flags in DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy respectively.

Both teams completed dominant seasons, and although challenged across the journey, mastered their opposition in comprehensive victories on the competition's biggest day.

For the competition's premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, it was left to Mount Evelyn were defending their title against Seville.

Early morning rain on the Saturday morning looked to curtail proceedings, but the skies cleared and a full day's play of intense cricket followed.

Mount Evelyn won the toss, and duly elected to bat, keen to brush off a mediocre finish to the season with the willow.

After great success with their opening bowling combination, Seville stuck with Marcus Smith and Liam Kay with the new ball in a bid to strangle the life out of the free scoring Mounters' bats.

For most part the strategy worked, and both Jesse Fraser and Andrew Giblin, although looking comfortable at the wicket, found scoring opportunities tough to come by.

The pair would hold their nerve, and inch by inch they would add to the tally which blossomed into a useful half century partnership.

The game was played at a frenetic pace, as the Seville slow bowling brigade whizzed through their overs trying to hustle the batsmen with some tight overs.

A staggering 55 overs would be bowled by afternoon tea, which had both teams scouring their rule books to work out their game plans as the game was evenly poised at 2/102.

Gareth Fraser and Jon Williams would combine for another useful half century partnership as the game ground to a crawl as the Seville outfit looked to reduce the amount of overs they looked likely to bowl.

The pair would add some urgency to their scoring, and unfortunately for Williams, it would cost him his wicket when he was run out for 30.

Gareth Fraser would push on to a fine innings of 66 which would anchor the late assault.

This would be matched by the fine efforts of Andy Kay who would salute with a five wicket haul in another marathon stint with the ball that almost matched that of his son.

Mark Sandfort would prove to be a more than capable ally as he finished with excellent figures of 3/28.

Eventually Mount Evelyn would be dis-

missed in the shadows of stumps with the score on 203.

Both teams would've rated their chances on day two with neither side in a totally commanding position.

Seville would opt for their most experienced players at the top, with Andy Kay and Leigh Aitkins and the pair started with positive intent and soon saw the opening bowlers off.

Unfortunately for the Blues that is where the resistance ended.

Kane Jones and Gareth Fraser took the control with the ball and the game.

The pair would bowl unchanged for 31 overs to dismantle their opposition.

Jones was the chief destroyer taking a remarkable 8/7 in a devastating performance.

Fraser would be no less effective with the ball, and his 2/21 wasn't a true reflection of his efforts with the ball.

Mount Evelyn now completes back to back flags in the top grade from appearing in three consecutive deciders.

They were clearly the dominant side in Strachan Shield, and their victory was thoroughly deserved.

In RA Finger Trophy action, Woori Yallock was equally impressive in their title defence against Gruyere.

Woori Yallock batted first, and they were soon in control as the experienced pairing of Ryan Smith and Mick Dwyer took the early ascendency.

The pair would put together an impressive 180 run opening partnership that would almost put the contest to bed.

Gruyere stalwart, Matt Tilney, would finally break through removing Dwyer, and when

Worlley and Smith followed soon after, the Scorpions swooped on a little opening.

Smith's brilliant century was something to behold as he made 127 runs off 154 deliveries rendering the Gruyere attack helpless.

Gruyere would fight back, but the early work of the openers, allowed the likes of Cal Ferguson, who scored a tidy 48 runs, the freedom to bat with little consequence.

The Tigers would lose wickets in the pursuit of an unassailable chase, but they would push their score to an imposing 9/267 when stumps were drawn.

Gruyere would make it tough for the Tigers early with Adam Waixel making an excellent half century.

Adam Dunn would collect early wickets (2/18), whilst Ryan Smith (4/23) and Cal Ferguson (3/63) would ensure the pressure would remain for the entire innings.

With the last four wickets falling without adding to the score, Gruyere succumbed for 123 a long way from their target of 267.

That makes it four flags in five years for the Tigers with two of those in the premier grade.

Fun run goes on in the rain

Three sides for pennant

By Jamie Strudley In a busy weekend for the Yarra Ranges Athletics club, the junior athletes had one last chance to set a new personal best or compete in their favourite event in the last competition of the track and field season at Morrison Reserve.

Unfortunately the rain came and limited the range of events on offer, but it didn't stop the athletes racing hard in damp but still conditions, perfect for running fast.

In a taste of the coming change in seasons, the open age athletes lead the members on a cross country warm- up, before the club colours were tested in a tug-o-war, seeing the Jaguars win the duel of strength.

More traditional races and field events were run with great endeavour, some parents being challenged to race putting family pride on the line.

The highlight of the morning was the 100m handicap races.

Many athletes lined up multiple times to try and escape or chase depending on their mark.

The smiles and determination, not to mention the close finishes were memorable.

The Little Athletics members will gather Saturday 30 March for their end of season presentation day.

Sunday 24 March was Fun Run day. 800 runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters gathered at the Lilydale Lake parklands to participate in the Yarra Ranges Athletics with Spectrum Journeys Inc Fun Run 2019.

By Eric Markham Monbulk Bowling Club had all three Saturday pennant sides in their division final, a record for the club.

Monbulk 1 played Upwey-Tecoma at the neutral venue of Mooroolbark.

The match was tight early with very little separating both teams.

Upwey-Tecoma gained the upper hand just prior to the break and took a seven shot lead.

Monbulk tried hard to get back on even terms and closed within three shots, but were not able to grab the lead eventually going down by 9 shots, 69 to 78.

Monbulk 2 played Cranbourne at Berwick and was able to win a close contest by 9 shots, 96 to 87.

Eric Furby's rink took control from the start winning fifteen of the twenty-one ends to win by 13 shots, 26 to 13.

These results meant that Monbulk 2 had won their section final and had now qualified for the metropolitan section finals.

Monbulk 3 played Bennettswood at Mooroolbark and in a close contest went down by 6 shots, 31 to 37.

Peter Hiscox's rink played well after a slow start winning 7 of the last 8 ends to record a victory by 3 shots, 17 to 14.

On Tuesday 19 March, Monbulk 1 advanced to the metropolitan division quarter final where they played Keysborough.

Monbulk struggled across all rinks and were no match for their strong opponents losing by 34 shots, 47 to 81.

Over distances of 2km, 5km and 10km, the participants supporting the fundraising event to assist the work being done in our local community by Yarra Ranges Athletics and Spectrum Journeys Inc. The 580 entrants, combined with the financial support by Max Brown Real Estate, Medical for Everybody and Kinley Estate, has delivered a fundraising result of over $10,000.

Kate Johnson of Spectrum Journeys Inc was ecstatic by this outcome saying, "Our state government funding is soon coming to an end, events like this allow our service to continue supporting families in the Yarra Ranges, and surrounding areas" The feedback from all involved was enthusiastic and positive, meaning the event will continue again in 2020.

The race leaders for the Sunday 24 March races were: Zoe Clarke 8m11s, Ky Harris 8m23s, Indigo Linde 22m13s, Mitchell Pointon 23m41s, Male James Laven 17m39s, Female Grace Muller 21m58s, Harry Norman 35m30s, and Lauren Starr 43m09s.

Pearson’s composure It was a cool, calm and collected approach that Cameron Pearson carried into the recent Australian Late Model Title at Sydney's Valvoline Raceway; an approach that ultimately allowed him to achieve his new mantle as Australia #2.

While he recently experienced a challenging run throughout the USA vs WA Invasion Tour over in Western Australia, the Healesvillebased racer refused to let his nerves or expectations get the better of him.

The opening night of competition was an almost flawless one for Pearson, who came out on top of his first heat race before backing up that result with a second-place finish in heat race two.

These results saw him qualify in pole position for the first of two preliminary feature races, which he then went on to lead for the entire distance to clinch his maiden Valvoline Raceway win.

Despite the fact that he was topping the points heading into the second night of competition after what had been a brilliant start to his Australian Title campaign, Pearson understood the importance of not getting ahead of himself, with another tough night of racing in store.

No doubt by virtue of his composure, the 19-year-old racer's campaign once again couldn't have gotten underway in a better way, winning his third and final heat race and pipping Callum Harper in the pole shuffle to earn the pole position start for the 40-lap Australian Title-deciding feature race.

While he was quick to take the lead off the starting line, remaining there for the opening five laps, Pearson committed to running the bottom of the track - a decision that initially proved costly as he slipped all the way back to seventh.

Managing to keep out of trouble during what had become a race of attrition, Pearson had made his way back up to second place with 12 laps remaining and it was there that he remained until greeting the chequered flag

"I'm absolutely stoked with second in an Australian Title feature race that had a little bit of everything," Pearson said.

"The team and I were in high spirits after our night one performance, but we made sure that we didn't psych ourselves out too much.

"We just broke down the event and took it one race at a time, which allowed us to focus

on the task at hand and it definitely all paid off," he said.

Pearson will no doubt be riding a wave of confidence heading into the remaining major events this season, which includes the NSW Title on March 9 back at Valvoline Raceway, followed by the Easternapolis on May 4 at Valvoline Raceway.

Well within contention for the Victorian

Late Model Club Championship, currently sitting second in the point standings just one point off the lead, Pearson also plans to contest the remaining Club Championship rounds.

"The whole team is really looking forward to the rest of the season and this Australian Title result has definitely given us some added drive as complete the rest of the season," Pearson said.
