While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era.

From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power.

"We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win.

And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Bunjil Place became enchanted by a swirl of cultural activities, live performances, food tasting, artist workshops and more as part of the Experience Casey festival.

Hundreds of people gathered at Bunjil Place Plaza for the event on Saturday 16 March which celebrated the diversity and range of cultures in the City of Casey.

The family-friendly event included different cultural activities including market stalls, roving entertainment; face painting, cooking demonstrations, African drumming, dance classes, and cooking demonstrations.

“I extend my deepest sympathy to the Islamic community for the friends and relatives that were lost there (Christchurch), and to every Muslim member of our community and indeed to every person of the Muslim faith throughout the globe.” - Cr Sam Aziz

One mad minute chamber: "We will take a minute silence every time we need to grieve collectively with humanity and share the sorrow of those that are simply innocent victims of rampant crime."

Cr Wayne Smith said the further minute silences by Cr Aziz seemed a "bit of an attempt" to diminish the Christchurch tribute.

"You'd have to ask Sam (Aziz) about his motives," he said. "I was hoping it would be handled differently."

He praised the community outpouring of support for local mosques after the Christchurch events. To the credit of councillors, no opposition was expressed against the minute's silence, he said.

"I'm sure there were some who were not happy about it. Everyone in the gallery participated in it. The outcome was OK in the end. It was the right thing to do."

"I've spoken to Councillor Crestani and she said yes she was appalled and the Mayor was also upset and it would never happen again," Maureen added.

Adam Sadiqzai, a community leader and a proud Muslim, said he was disappointed by Cr Aziz's comments.

"It's so disheartening that we have paid, elected representatives that are divisive and politically point scoring at a time that's so inappropriate," Mr Sadiqzai said.

"Those kinds of comments undermine the gravity of what's happened in New Zealand and normalising these horrible events. They're essentially saying, 'Well, it's okay that happened, because all of this happened'. It just makes no sense to me.

"No life is more valuable than another. Our leaders should be preaching compassion, love and acceptance rather than hate and division."

A Casey councillor has been accused of "making a fool of himself" after a minute silence was held for victims of the Christchurch massacre.

During a council meeting on Tuesday 19 March councillors and the public gallery stood for a minute's silence following the horrific shooting in New Zealand last Friday.

However, Cr Sam Aziz controversially then called for a minute's silence to honour the lives of those lost in a recent Nigerian attack and a terrorist attack in the Philippines.

"It's imperative upon us to also acknowledge everyone who has perished," Cr Aziz said.

"I'm sure that all the members of the Muslim community present here in the gallery would unhesitatingly join me in honouring their memory in this way."

After a minute's silence, Cr Aziz rose again in the council chamber requesting councillors to

take a further minute silence "to actually honour the memory of those that we haven't remembered and those that have got no one to remember them."

Maureen of Narre Warren North, who attended the meeting, said she and her husband were "appalled" by Cr Aziz's behaviour.

"He got up and made an absolute fool of himself and council as far as we were concerned," she said.

Maureen, who asked not to publish her surname, said they "had no problem" in paying tribute to the Christchurch victims.

"Obviously it upset the other gentleman (Cr Aziz) and he had to put all these other things which took all the relevance of the first minute silence," she said.

"It was a waste of time; it was disrespectful in the end for everybody.

"It just didn't make sense. It reminded us of a Monty Python skit.

By Brendan Rees The owner of a family-run nursery in Hampton Park says he's fed up with ongoing roadworks that are killing his trade.

Anthony Diaco, who manages the Diaco's family's Discount Nursery and Garden Rock Supplies with his father Vince, said changes to the Hallam Road upgrade project made it look like his business was closed.

"We're absolutely isolated; we've got no passing trade," he said.

"It looks like we're closed because look at all the temporary fencing.

"If it keeps on going the way it's going I'm going to have to cut back wages; I'm going to have to probably retrench a few people because I can't afford to keep these wages," Mr Diaco added.

The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade will add an extra lane in each direction between Ormond Road and South Gippsland Highway - which will also involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of the nursery.

Mr Diaco has been fighting a battle with the Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) as a right-hand turn into his business has been marked for removal as part of the roadworks.

As part of the upgrade, new traffic lights will be installed and the South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road intersection.

Once all works are complete the speed limit on Hallam Road will be set at 80km.

Hallam Road has now been partially closed in the past three weeks creating a further setback to the business.

"It's all barricaded. You can come off South Gippsland Highway but it's very deceiving," he added.

Mr Diaco said he was at wits end with MRPA in trying to get more signage at the front of his business to say they were still open.

"I want to get another sign out there saying we're open all the time and they say they can't get any permits from the council," he said.

"I'm just stressed to the max. I haven't been sleeping. It's a bloody headache-and-a-half.

"I'm going to get a balloon put up the top here and we're going to put business as usual so at least they can see something," he added.

"We get in excess of 10-15 customers a day ringing up are you still open."

In January, Mr Diaco said he feared closing his doors if the MRPA didn't play fair.

"It's just heartbreaking. You put your blood, sweat and tears into something, and something like this happens."

MRPA has been contacted for comment.

Knife bandit nabbed, stolen car recovered

By Brendan Rees A Hampton Park man has been charged over an alleged knife hold-up on fast food workers last week.

It's alleged two bandits in a stolen car held up two McDonald's stores in Hampton Park and Cranbourne on Thursday 14 March.

Investigators were told the offenders described as African in appearance attended the store on South Gippsland Highway where they wielded knifes at staff about 5.15am.

They fled with cash to a waiting stolen blue 2016 Mazda 3 hatchback where a third person remained, police say.About 15 minutes later, police say they entered a McDonald's on Thompsons Road where they allegedly again produced a knife and made demands for cash before bolting.

Detective Sergeant John Curnow of the Southern Metropolitan Region Crime Team said a 19-year-old Hampton Park man and a 16-year-old Boronia girl were arrested when police executed a warrant at a Boronia address on Tuesday 19 March.

"She will be charged with theft of motor car in relation to that same car - the Mazda," Sgt

Philip Dragon, 20, was at home asleep with his five siblings and parents when his brother's car being the blue Mazda was allegedly stolen from Limousin Court, Berwick on Monday 11 March.

"My dad just woke me up, told me my car was stolen. I didn't really believe him at the start," he said. "I actually kind of fell back to sleep because I didn't process it."

"Unfortunately; stupid mistake is that me and my brother left our keys in the car.

"My brother left his wallet in the car and had his credit card in there," he said .

According to Mr Dragan, the same credit card was used the next day at a Hallam 7-Eleven store and about half-an-hour later to buy liquor at The Railway Hotel Windsor but the card declined.

Mr Dragan posted on Facebook's Casey Crime Page about the stolen cars where he received a message from the public saying they had spotted the blue Mazda on View Road in Hampton Park on Saturday 16 March.

"They told us where it was, went there, waited for the cops to come...still alright it's just the mirrors on both sides are smashed off," he said.

Police recovered Mr Dragan's car on Tuckers Road, Clyde on Sunday night, 17 March.

Cop hunt for shop lifters Police are investigating following thefts from a Narre Warren store on Sunday 3 March.

Drugs, cash and guns located in Cranbourne raids A Botanic Ridge man has appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court following the execution of a warrant in Botanic Way near Cranbourne on Thursday 14 March.

Dandenong Divisional Response Unit detectives executed the warrant at an address on Cornflower Rise just before 6am.

At the address detectives allegedly located an amount of cash, a quantity of white powder believed to be methyl-amphetamine and firearms.

The 40-year-old Botanic Ridge man was arrested at the address.

He has been charged with traffick a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, traffick a commercial quantity of methyl-amphetamine and associated weapon offences.

Police hunt arsonist Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for information following an alleged arson incident that occurred in Cranbourne West on the Tuesday 12 March Police allege that between 5pm and 5pm a small grass/tree fire was lit in the reserve parkland off Central Parkway.

Precious Cuddle Cot gift

By Brendan Rees George his wife Maria Mihos remember the precious moment they welcomed their firstborn into the world.

But what happened in the next 21 hours would be forever etched in their hearts and minds.

Born prematurely at 23 weeks and three days, Haralambos Harrison weighed just 660 grams. He was in a critical condition and by the next afternoon he had passed away on 12 December, 2012.

"We're never going to get an answer as to why he passed away," Maria says.

"From what we were told, I may have had the Strep B strain which is a virus that is within many pregnant women but unfortunately for us it may've also brought on the sudden early birth of Harrison and his subsequent infection."

In the hours that followed after Harrison's passing was a moment Maria and George recall as a "bittersweet memory."

"A nurse, at a hospital we wish not to name, had offered to bring our baby to us rather than going to the hospital morgue," Maria explained.

"We were thankful for the offer however when our son was delivered in a dark black fully zipped up portable handheld pram bassinet-style freezer bag; we were shocked to say the least.

Maria said the nurse left the zipped up bag at the foot of her bed, and told they had 10 to 15 minutes with Harrison before they would have to give him back.

Maria looked at her husband and then back at the bag: "I slowly unzipped the bag to see our precious boy laying peacefully in the outfit we had placed him in after his first and final bath we had given him just a few short hours before.

Following their heartbreaking loss, and as part of their own healing process, Maria went on to do a lot of research into infant death and came across an invaluable support resource called a Cuddle Cot, proudly supported by the charity organisation, Bears of Hope.

"The Cuddle Cot is a cooling system designed to fit within a small cot and lies beneath the baby," Maria explained.

"It enables bereaved families to keep their baby close and create beautiful memories, spending as much uninterrupted time as they

wish before saying their final goodbye without the worry or stress of handing their baby back to hospital staff to be cooled in the traditional cooling room environment."

"It has been our wish to embark on this fundraiser as the Cuddle Cot unfortunately was not made available to us in our time of need however a busy life over the last six years including the arrival of our three rainbows, Connor Konstantinos George, aged five; Nina Mersina, aged three-and-a-half; and Louis Lambros aged two - all of which were difficult pregnancies has seen it postpone a number of times," Maria said.

It was just four months after Harrison's

passing that Maria fell pregnant with Connor via IVF again. Told she had an "incompetent cervix," she was bedridden in hospital and monitored closely from 24 weeks pregnant.

Connor was then born at 27 weeks, and spent 86 days in the NICU and Special Care Nursery, during which he overcame the odds, and went home fit and healthy.

While they have had their hands full, over the past six years their memories of Harrison have remained a constant.

Wanting to do something to honour their son's memory with a lasting legacy, the opportunity came in last August where they started this fundraising initiative to buy Cuddle Cots for hospitals to help "the healing process from the beginning for the next bereaved family in need."

Today, they have raised an amazing $14,361.00 and rising thanks to 82 donors and donated their first Cuddle Cot on 13 December last year to St Vincent's Private in Fitzroy.

Following their first presentation, George and Maria received one particular $6,000 straight up donation made at the end of last year from the family of the Late Mrs Mary Banks which was donated and presented to St John of God Berwick Hospital on Thursday 14 March. This generous donation was made extra special as George Mihos, a long-standing employee of Hansen Yuncken who also worked as a Bid Manager on the tender process of the construction of the newly built hospital.

Director of maternity services at St John of God Berwick Hospital, Allison Merrigan said the Cuddle Cot was a generous donation and would help comfort families in need.

"We are incredibly grateful that in their time of grief that they were able to think of us and help other families," she said.

Manhunt for robbers Police are searching for two men after they allegedly held up a mini mart in Narre Warren on Wednesday 13 March.

Police have been told the men, perceived to be Caucasian, entered the Anaconda Road store just before 7am on Wednesday 13 March.

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Jacobi of Casey Crime Investigation Unit said one man jumped the counter and kicked a staff member to the side of the face.

"The staff member ran to the back of the store and called police," he said.

"The males, who were wearing gloves and had their faces covered, stole cigarettes and cash from the register which they repeatedly threw to the ground to open."

They left in a late model grey Mercedes.

The male staff member was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Staff from the mini mart declined to comment on the incident.

Today, 21 March, is Harmony Day. It is a day that celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and coincides with the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Sadly, the antics of Casey Council at this week’s meeting undermine that effort.

In a week where we are supposed to be celebrating our diversity of race, faith and thought, one councillor undermined what was supposed to be a moving show of support for a group in mourning.

A condolence motion asking for a minute’s silence in respect to the 50 Muslims gunned down in a Christchurch mosque last Friday was bizarrely followed by two other calls for a minute’s silence over unrelated massacres of Christians.

Those events occurred some time ago and, while appalling and deserving of a sorrowful tribute, did not belong at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Who knows how this was read by those of the Islamic faith who packed the gallery in anticipation of the condolence motion. For many, it soured what should have been nothing more than a sweet gesture.

One onlooker described the scene as something from a Monty Python skit only that it was far from funny.

I am not a religious person by any means. But I have many friends who are and I respect their right to worship in whichever way they see fit - whether that be in a Christian church, a Muslim mosque or a Hindu or Buddhist temple.

That’s their choice, their faith and their right. And that place of worship should be their sanctuary.

No-one else has the right to take that away - particularly in the violent and repulsive manner in which that occurred in Christchurch.

The white supremacist who gunned down 50 defenseless worshippers in cold blood apparently reasoned that it was an eye for an eye - payback for the evils of ISIS. This is a view fanned by elements of the right in politics and in the media, incredibly right up to the behavior and rhetoric of a world leader. And apparently by some in the Casey Council chambers.

What rubbish!

To blame all Muslims for the evils of ISIS is like blaming all Christians for the evils that have come to light among some Catholic parishes of late.

The overwhelming majority of Muslims - and Catholics for that matter - are good, decent and loving people. It is the extremists - on all sides of religion - that do the damage. If there needs to be hate, it should be directed their way, not to faith groups as a whole.

There couldn’t be a better time for Harmony Day activities. Instead of political point-scoring, these councillors should get out and mix with others of a different faith or race.

They’ll be better for the experience.

Taking a stand to save wildlife

By Brendan Rees Police hope CCTV images will identify those responsible for a theft at a store in Narre Warren on 17 February.

Police allege about 10.40am a man and woman have entered the store, and the woman has purchased an item.

While she was being served the man has picked up both the item that was paid for along with another item valued at $191 which had not been paid for.

Police have released CCTV still images of a male and female who they believe can assist with their investigation.

With the help of her mum Maree, Shannon baked cookies and other sweets to sell at her stall, raising $1,020.

"I knew that the stall would be a small part.

It makes me all the more confident of my worthy course," she said.

Mum Maree said she couldn't be prouder,

adding it was great Shannon was "creating community awareness."

"She's always been passionate about animals; I thought this was the best way for her to do it," she said.

Shannon's school project was always going to be "based around animals," Maree added.

A report will come back to council in May.

At just 12 years-old, Shannon Underwood is leading a charge to reduce the speed limit on a road in Lysterfield South to save wildlife.

The Grade 6 student started a petition to combat the numbers of wildlife, particularly kangaroos that are injured or killed on Churchill Park Drive.

She was inspired to bring about change after undertaking a school project.

"We had to do something about ourselves either personal change or a community change," Shannon says. "I wanted to help the community somehow; I was really interested in helping the animals."

She said the current sign warning motorists of wildlife on Churchill Park Drive didn't go far enough: "I just want to make it a safer place for the kangaroos."

The road, which is currently 70 km/h, is surrounded by bushland and Churchill Park Golf Club, causing animals to be vulnerable on the road.

Shannon said "it felt really good" to garner 110 signatures in support of her petition thanks to the help of the community and her teachers at Caulfield Grammar School.

The petition was presented to Casey Council during a meeting on 5 March which council officers will now investigate.

"I wanted to do something that would set in place a rule that would make it safer," Shannon says.

A spontaneous vigil standing for "peace and solidarity" in the wake of the Christchurch massacres was staged at Harmony Square, Dandenong.

On Saturday 16 March - one day after the terror - the crowd gathered around a heart-shape of candles with the word NZ (for New Zealand) in the middle.

Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and cleric Syed Abdul Qasim Rizvi spoke before a quickly-organised crowd of about 200.

Among the gatherers were representatives of mosques in Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam and Narre Warren, as well as members of Buddhist and Christian faiths and councillors Tim Dark and Jim Memeti.

Ms Williams told Star News that the "abhorrent" events in Christchurch were an "act of terrorism" and "blind hatred".

She commended local Muslim community and its leadership for opening their doors to the public.

"It would not have been unreasonable for Muslims to retreat, and for mosques to close their doors to outsiders. But they didn't.

"Instead, our Muslim leaders gathered our community together in vigil, and they opened mosque doors to the public."

Cr Blades and Ms Williams joined Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Casey councillor Wayne Smith in support at the Albanian Islamic Centre in Dandenong on a statewide mosque open day on 17 March.

"Many people attended where we spoke about solidarity and extended our sympathy and condolences to our friends in New Zealand.

"We stand in solidarity with all of the different faiths and all of the different communities that we look after in the City of Greater Dandenong."

Cr Blades observed that many residents had visited a mosque for the first time since the Christchurch events.

"I think that it was very heartwarming, a very positive experience for them."

Primary school students at Harkaway Hills College in Narre Warren North will benefit from new learning facilities thanks to $750,000 in funding from the Federal Government.

Member for La Trobe Jason Wood joined Casey Deputy Mayor Rosalie Crestani in officially opening the new building on Tuesday 18 March.

"It was great to visit Harkaway Hills College and see the new facilities firsthand and the impact they will have on students' learning potential," Mr Wood said.

Mr Wood said students and the whole school community would benefit from these new facilities which include two general learning areas, student amenities and a hard court/play area.

"These new learning spaces take into account the latest in educational research and will see students learn more effectively.

"This is part of our commitment to ensuring students have the support they need to succeed in the classroom.

"Students and teachers thrive when their schools have modern and up-to-date facilities - that's why the Federal Government is proud of the Capital Grants Program, which has benefited thousands of schools across the nation."

According to Harkaway Hills College Principal Mary Broadsmith, the significance of this first permanent building goes beyond the structure itself.

"This is more than a building, this is a place that will form and inspire the leaders of the future. This is a place of hope. In this building, our students here will learn that leadership is an act of service," she said.

Berwick mum Melinda Bowd, 48, spent her teenage years and early twenties extremely active, from water sports, to ice skating and netball.

A single mother of three children, Ms Bowd, worked as a nurse and showed no signs of slowing down. She enjoyed participating in community activities and racing around after her children.

However, Mel's life as she knew it started to change dramatically almost 20 years ago, when she was first diagnosed with psoriasis.

It was during this time, her inflammatory skin condition was met with aches and pains, a symptom she never knew was psoriatic arthritis (PsA)- a life-long condition that causes inflammation of the joints due to an overactive immune system that mistakenly targets the body, causing the joints to become painful, stiff and often swollen.

"It affected me mentally as well as physically, and the pain/fatigue made me feel depressed and eventually not able to do all the things I used to including working full time," she said.

"With pain and depression, it became a vicious cycle of one making the other worse.

I was sleeping a lot, stopped going out and was basically housebound just to manage my symptoms."

Ms Bowd put her aches and pains down to childhood sports injuries, and instead, underwent a series of arthroscopies.

Her joint pain persisted, and it was 11 years later that she finally received a definitive diagnosis for psoriatic arthritis.

"Though it took time, with a great medical team working together we were able to find the best treatment options for the skin condition of psoriasis, joint pain psoriatic arthritis and depression," she explained.

"I'm now living a great life (though adjusted) with my pain well managed. I'm still youngish and want to be active with my very supportive family."

A new treatment option for Australians living with known as psoriatic arthritis is now available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Around 50,000 Australians are thought to be living with diagnosed psoriatic arthritis, Australians living with PsA will now have access to a new treatment option, thanks to the Australian Government's decision to list TALTZ® on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The listing means patients will only have to pay the PBS co-payment price of $40.30 for a standard script, or $6.50 for concession card holders, to access the treatment.

"The PBS listing of TALTZ for adult patients with severe psoriatic arthritis is welcome news. Psoriatic arthritis is a progressive condition and over time, joint pain can lead to increased disability and decreased function. It is important that patients have access to alternate therapies to hel improve their symptom control," Professor Stephen Hall, Melbournebased Rheumatologist said.

If people are concerned about symptoms of PsA they should speak with their doctor about treatment that would be appropriate for them.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs.

While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era.

From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power.

"We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win.

And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Library has the look Bunjil Place Library has taken out top honours at the 2019 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Design Awards on Thursday 14 March.

Representatives from the City of Casey and Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) were thrilled when the Library was awarded the ALIA Members' Choice Library Design Award and acknowledged as an honourable finalist in the Public Library of the Year category.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said what a very deserving recipient Bunjil Place Library was of this award.

"It's an extremely big achievement for our prized library to be recognised at this national level and I am proud that we can offer this stunning facility to the Casey community," the Mayor said.

"The Bunjil Place Library is more than just a library, it's an experience for everyone who attends."

The Bunjil Place Library received glowing compliments from the judging panel, who described it as a 'visually striking design with a dynamic interplay of different building materials'.

The judges also added that its 'superb timber grid shells and ribbons intersect powerfully with glass, resulting in a stunning building, constituting a community centrepiece and a vital asset'.

CCL chief executive officer, Chris Buckingham was over the moon to accept the accolade at the awards ceremony in Brisbane.

"This is a stunning endorsement of our beautiful library, and the people who work in it every day. The team at CCL have helped set a new national benchmark for library services," he said.

"More than 1,000 ALIA members voted in the poll and our library came out on top.

"What makes this award even more special is the endorsement from our peers across Australia.

The event at the Hawthorn campus girls saw girls aged 5 to 12 years descend on Swinburne University of Technology to explore the exciting world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) with their parents.

Narre Warren resident Tim Comport said his daughter Eva-Jane had a ball.

"It went really well, she had fun. One of the activities was chemistry where they mixed up their own colourful slime," Mr Comport said.

Mr Comport is a software engineer and is keen for his daughter to learn more about technology.

"I was surprised when we walked the friendliness of other younger girls there," he added.

"They immediately ran up like they were longtime friends but they had never met before."

Wade Angelo, volunteer of SuperDaughter Day and father, said: "There is no other platform I am aware of that is pushing women towards pursuing a career in STEM." "Super Daughter Day is a way to embrace this changing culture and shift in movement towards encouraging women their abilities are limitless," he said.

Hundreds gathered for the Holland Festival at Akoonah Park where people of Dutch origins or those with an interest in the Dutch culture enjoyed a great day out with food, entertainment and Dutch cultural experiences.

There was 70 stallholders including merchants, food vendors, exhibitions, and information booths.

Lions roar their way back

When Narre South made the bold move to acquire the great Scott Phillips back in 2016/17, the Lions were always going to be a side tagged with a certain expectation.

The Turf 2 club was expected to take the leap into the top-tier off the back of the legendary all-rounder who for well over a decade and a half, ripped apart batting attacks and belted bowlers all over the ground in the MPCA and for Frankston Peninsula.

And on Saturday, Phillips' Lions finally did it after two years of disappointment, conquering great rivals Narre North in an epic grand final filled with an intense nature and a fierce competitiveness between 22 players desperate for a chance to go up to Turf 1.

It's been 21 years since the club last tasted glory in the first XI ... but not anymore.

Day one saw two masterful displays from either side: for the Lions, it was Phillips weaving magic with the ball, while with the bat; opener Kyle Hardy was resolute in a strong hand at the top.

Tim Phillips (3/52), the brother of Scott, caused some serious problems for the Rams early after they won the toss and elected to bat, snaring top order duo Josh Henry and Michael Dunstan with two searing deliveries past the gate.

Kyle Hardy kept his shape and tried to build a foundation, but Scott Phillips kept finding the key breakthroughs, tearing apart the middle order to leave the Rams reeling.

But unluckily for Hardy, his 239-ball stay came to an end on 90, ending what has been a tremendous individual season for the opener, with Phillips shattering the stumps for yet another wicket, and despite the Rams getting a strong cameo out of skipper Matt Brooks (47), they made the decision to declare on 9/206, giving the Lions just one painstaking over to face before stumps, which they did comfortably.

Phillips' day makes some for some worthwhile reading, snaring the incredible figures of 6/76 off 36 overs, all in what was a fairly warm day.

It was a disastrous start to the run chase, and one that would have certainly filled the Lions supporters with nervous energy considering they failed to chase down a similar target against the same club, at the same ground last year, with Morteza Ali's stumps removed by a brilliant ball from Steve Ryan (4/23) off the very first ball of the day.

Jawed Hussaini and Luke Flynn battled hard to try and see off some excellent new ball bowling, and looked to be struggling against the stump-to-stump lines off the Rams' quicks, in particular Nathan Wilson (1/25) in the early stages.

And an incredible catch at second slip by Ryan Hendy to remove Hussaini proved the catalyst for a stunning hour of cricket for the Rams, who were clearly in with a sniff of claiming back-to-back flags.

Ryan then went to work after replacing Wilson, and the veteran had an immediate impact, bowling a sublime line to lure Ashan Wijayakumara into a false stroke to remove him for seven to leave the Lions 3/28, forcing overseas star Jonty Jenner into the thick of the action quicker than he would have liked.

Jenner, who has been a revelation for the Lions in his first season of the DDCA, signalled his intentions early, sending a Ryan Hendy ball sailing out of the ground after only being in for a matter of minutes, but Ryan's clever lines forced Jenner (11) to spoon one to mid-on next over in a massive moment in the game, before removing a patient Luke Flynn (18) the very

In a moment that could have very easily changed the entire context of the grand final, Phillips appeared to faintly edge one onto his pads off Hendy off his first ball, with the catch taken at short leg, and despite the shrieking, murmuring and shock around the ground, the skipper was unmoved and the umpire gave him not out.

And unflinching from his style, Phillips immediately responded with positivity, and slowly but surely, combining with keeper Joe Thomas, began to soak up the pressure and get the scoreboard ticking.

While it looked a long way back for the Lions, with Phillips at his damaging best, anything was possible. After cracking two pull shots and a gorgeous lofted drive down the ground in three consecutive balls to race to 27, the skipper gave another chance on the brink of tea, skying a pull-shot straight to square leg, but it was put down.

The Lions managed to hold the Rams at bay to get to tea 5/92, and with 116 runs to get in the final session.

Both Thomas and Phillips built their partnership steadily after tea, and soon after, the skipper crashed past 50 at a rate of almost a run a ball.

Then came the match-winning push that saw the Lions emerge from a spot of darkness into the inevitable premiership lightness, with the pair flaying the Rams in ominous fashion.

With poise and grit, the pair forged forward, Phillips belting one of his most memorable centuries, in three hours of pressure-filled batting that will go down in folklore, and Thomas crossing a half-century to finish on 62, in an innings and a performance that deserves just as much fanfare as his skipper.

In the 70th over, the game was ended, with Thomas crashing the ball through the covers off Joel Zietsman, and then Frawley Road erupted, with teammates and supporters rolling onto the ground in waves to capture a moment of the great escape.

In the Turf 3 decider, Lyndale provided an incredible shock at Lois Twohig Reserve on the weekend, stunning highly credentialed favourites Beaconsfield to claim a whirlwind premiership.

The Dales almost looked defeated after they won the toss and elected to bat, with Callan Tout (4/29) and skipper Matt Golding (4/38) shredding the top order apart to leave them 4/13 and soon after 5/33, struggling to put bat on ball.

But Yohan Soyza (51) and Chanaka Wijewardena (40) battled hard to soak up the pressure and eventually forge into a vital partnership, putting on 91 runs to put the underdogs back into the game, and a late surge from skipper Ben Montgomery (21) lifted the Dales to an incredibly competitive 159 in a tick over 71 overs.

The Tigers started just as poorly to their chase, with Kane McConchie (4/32) completely decimating the top-order, and suddenly, with all of this expectation, they sat at 4/39 and in dire need of a steadying partnership.

While Matt Golding (36) provided the threat, the Tigers continually lost wickets to slump to 8/82, but the skipper combined with Jake Cutting (25) to breathe life into a contest that appeared to slip away.

But the wicket of Cutting, sparked by Soyza (3/24), who played a defining role with both bat and ball, meant the Dales needed just one more wicket to seal it, and it was only moments later that the game came to a close.

And in Turf 1 preliminary final, David White's utter dominance over the Dandenong District Cricket Association went to another level on the weekend after the South-African guided Buckley Ridges into a grand final showdown against Springvale South.

The Bucks' captain-coach was in extraordinary touch against Hallam Kalora Park at Park Oval, crashing an unbeaten 155 on day two to see them to victory after at one stage, it looked like an unlikely victory.

The Hawks batted superbly on day one after winning the toss and batting, playing out their allotted overs to finish their innings on 7/285, and it was sturdy opener Ben Hillard (55) that stuck to his guns to play a vital role at the top order.

Skipper Ciaron Connolly (46 not out) and Peter Sofra (47 not out) sent the ball flying in a wonderful partnership late in the day, adding a further 94 runs to the total and give the Bucks a steep chase on day two.

It was simply a horror show to begin with for the Bucks, with star opener Daniel Watson run out without troubling the scorers, but Paul Rudd (40) and White got the home side back on track with an 83-run partnership.

The wicket of Rudd at the hands of Leigh Booth (3/62) saw the home side teeter and fall to 5/135. But one thing stood in their way - White.

The star former South-African A player crunched yet another hundred in what has been an extraordinary stint in Australia, guiding the Bucks home with four wickets to spare on his way to an astonishing 155 not out.

Cavaliers kick into gear

By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers recorded three massive wins and one nailbiting loss in Round 1 of the 2019 Big V basketball season.

The State Championship men, who will be looking to build on their postseason appearance last year, tipped off their 2019 campaign in dominant fashion with a 98-69 win over Blackburn on the road.

Their win was highlighted by hitting 12 triples, with Matt Donlan (20 points and 5 rebounds) and Brent Hobba (18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) each draining four shots from deep.

Star Raheem Lemons (24 points and 11 rebounds) kicked his season off with yet another double-double. Casey came out firing in the second quarter to produce a 29-8 run and take control of the contest - they were never troubled after that.

After making the jump from Division 1 women, the Cavs came to play in their first game of Big V State Championship women's basketball.

The Cavs looked at home in the higher division, disposing of the Warrnambool Mermaids at Casey Stadium with ease, 94-55.

Five players scored at least 12 points in a showcase of their incredible depth, with Jaimie-Lee Jeffs (19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists), Tanarly Hood (17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists) and Sarah Halejian (14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals) leading the way.

The Youth League 1 men also put their best foot forward in their season-opening game.

Facing Sunbury on the road, Casey broke free in the final quarter to run away 19-point winners, 103-84.

The Cavs were led by a scorching hot Blake Taylor who drained 5/8 triples on his way to posting 28 points, 4 steals and 3 rebounds in a dynamic display. Brendon Head (20 points,

The Youth League 1 women fell agonisingly short of a win against Keilor at Casey Stadium on Saturday night. In what was an absorbing contest between two teams that didn't give an inch, Casey was overrun in the end, losing 7167.

It was the Cavs' intense defensive pressure that fuelled their 2018 Youth League 2 Cham-

pionship run and that mindset was evident in their first outing in the higher division. Grabbing 15 steals and forcing the Thunder in 25 turnovers kept the Cavs in the contest, despite shooting just 1/14 from deep.

Lauren Tuplin (22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals) and Bec Peacock (15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) were impressive.

Cranbourne claim flags CRANBOURNE BOWLS The Cranbourne Bowls Club was a happy place on Saturday night with all four teams playing in semi-finals and recording great wins. This allowed them to all play in sectional grand finals the next day.

All four teams did well on Sunday with the Cranbourne 2nd and 3rd sides winning sectional pennant flags, however the 4th and 5th sides were very competitive but lost in close games.

The club was all cheers on Sunday night af-

ter these two great wins and also proud of the great fighting spirit shown by the two losing Cranbourne sides.

This means that Cranbourne next year will field two Division 2 sides, which hopefully will launch the club into contention to get a Cranbourne side back in Division 1 again.

Meanwhile, the ladies competed in the pennant grand final against Clayton earlier in the week but were out-played by a better team on the day. The club was very proud of the ladies who had an outstanding year.

"The group is definitely coming together and also the coaches too - they've all had to get to know each other and bringing a whole new group together is probably one of the biggest challenges."

With coach Robynn Pym leading from the sidelines, there is a great mixture of experience

The Casey Demons' inaugural Victorian Netball League (VNL) season is almost upon us and the team looks set to make waves in the state's premier netball competition.

Last Friday night, in front of a packed crowd at the Casey Fields function room, the Casey Demons officially launched their 2019 season and former Australian captain, Sharelle McMahon was on hand to present the team with their dresses.

"There were about 180 people there and Sharelle McMahon was our special guest - she was fantastic and had the room captivated," Casey Demons VNL president Rebekah Bogos said.

"She presented all their dresses and spoke about he challenges and her experiences, so it was a really good way to kick start the more formal part of the season."

Having a Casey team in the VNL has long been a vision for those involved with the Casey Netball Association, so you can rest assured that when the team sets foot on court in their Round 1 clash against the Melbourne University Lightning, there will be a huge sense of pride.

Pride for making that vision come to fruition, pride in those pulling on the Casey Demons colours for the first time on a netball court and perhaps most importantly, pride in giving Casey residents the chance to watch, support and be inspired by elite netball in their own community.

Whilst that first clash is at the State Netball Hockey Centre on 27 March, the Demons will take on the Hawks (affiliated with Hawthorn's AFL team) in round 3 at Casey Stadium on 10 April from 7:50pm.

"For our local people, it's a chance to watch elite netball in their own backyard - we hope to pack it out with all seats filled." Bogos said.
