"It wasn't until I read the submission that I realised we were doing some amazing things," she said. "To go from a cow paddock to what it is today has been really quite a journey."

movement between farms is controlled, grasslands are maintained throughout the farm and there are no dirt tracks. The farm vehicles are fitted with special low-traction tyres which minimise soil disruption and reduce the transfer of weeds around the property.

"We were the first in Australia to put strawberries under nets to buffer the extremes of wind, hail and frost," Luciano added. "The bonus was we reduced water consumption by 30 per cent due to less evaporation, and it was the computer systems and data collection that showed us that.

"The quality assurance, biosecurity and sustainability systems actually work really well together and they enhance each other and produce higher volumes of quality product.

The soils of Millgrove and the dedication of Luciano and Heather Corallo have long combined to produce lush, delicious strawberries from their Strawberry Springs farm.

In recognition of their pioneering work the couple have been awarded the 2019 Australian Farm Biosecurity Producer of the Year, announced at the national awards ceremony in Canberra on Wednesday 6 March.

Luciano said that he didn't set out to win any awards and it has been an evolution that started with their approach to hygiene and quality control.

"I guess we were environmentally conscious from the beginning and we built that into how we grow on a commercial scale," he

said. "I love the valley and the waterways so sustainability has always been part of who I am."

Strawberry Farms was commended for its proactive pursuit of best practices in farm management, quality assurance and biosecurity procedures. Luciano said he didn't begin with a biosecurity checklist and the journey started years ago when he decided to automate the production process.

"That involved a lot of monitoring, auditing and putting things in place to give us full traceability of our product from start to finish," he said. "We had special software developed that allows us to trace every berry back to its source and monitor what is going on."

LETTERS Time to revolt Victorian tax payers whom travel over the Black Spur - It's time to revolt against the state government that continues to ignore the many delays to motorists brought about by accidents and fallen trees on the Black Spur.

While state governments, both liberal and labor continue spending billions of tax payer money on road tunnels, freeways and crossings, very little has been spent to retain reliability for motorists using the Maroondah Highway over the Black Spur.

A blockage on New Year's Eve left many motorists angry and frustrated. Some even slept there all night.

Has VicRoads, supported by the state government considered an alternative route?

For instance, VicRoads engineers could reassess the old Black Spur route, as an extra route, which starts at St Romans Well and ends at the bottom of Watts River.

We could have one road up and one road down.

One of these roads could then be used solely if a tree fell across either one or in the case of a major accident.

Those out there that talk the talk, it's time to walk the walk.

For those who don't know, the Black Spur as it is known commences at the Watts River.

Our population is increasing, which means more vehicles on our roads and this one urgently requires a passing lane on the way up.

Tourism is so important to the north of the divide and is one of the industries growing in size. Let's not deter them with unsuitable roads that cause accidents and delays.

IN BRIEF Appeal for witnesses Police are appealing for witnesses regarding a collision on Saturday 23 February in Chirnside Park.

On Saturday 23 between 11:00 and 11:15PM, it is believed that a silver hatchback type vehicle collided with the rear of a Mercedes Benz, possibly an SUV, on Maroondah Highway near Chirnside Park shopping centre or Manchester Road.

The collision resulted in minor damage to both vehicles.

Police wish to speak to the driver of the Mercedes Benz. It should be emphasised that the owner of the Mercedes Benz is not under police investigation and is sought as a witness only.

Missed messages

By Michael Doran With the Upper Yarra fires raising concerns the CFA held a community meeting in Warburton on Tuesday 5 March but it seems some of the messages both to and from the local community are not being heard.

East Warburton resident, Kate Kite says that the issues raised in the meeting were not new and that some of the learnings from Black Saturday seem to have been lost.

"It's sad to say that nothing much has changed and I don't feel like the community has been listened to entirely," she said. "There was a lot of frustration at the meeting, mainly on really important things like no phone coverage, no radio reception, power cuts and even highway roadworks happening now."

"There was a lot of support but there was nobody there who could give us any comfort on these concerns, so we came away with

The issue being raised is that using multiple sources of information is fine until, one by one, those sources disappear, which is the crucial point Ms Kite is raising.The loss of fixed line telephone services and poor mobile coverage is what concerns her the most.

"There was funding for a new mobile tower

in East Warburton but it didn't do much for people who don't live on the main road," she said. "There are still people in the area who can't get ABC radio reception unless they get in their car and drive down to the highway."

"If the power goes out there is no NBN, and with no mobile or radio reception they are down to nothing unless they go for a drive and all this was identified after Black Saturday."

It's clear that the level of community preparedness depends on access to information and it follows that if access to information is not there then people can't be prepared.

What is clear is that the community has complete faith in the CFA to do what it does best, fighting fires and protecting lives and property where possible.

The concerns are around the infrastructure that is available to get the information out that is so desperately needed by residents in a crisis. That issue still needs to be solved.

30 birds for 30 years

By Jed Lanyon For 30 years, Healesville Sanctuary's devotion to the Helmeted Honeyeater has not waned.

Sanctuary keepers are celebrating the birth of 30 critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeaters as the current breeding season draws to a close.

"It's ironic, but we've bred 30 birds in our thirtieth year of the program, our best breeding season in a decade," said Helmeted Honeyeater Keeper Meagan Lane.

"These chicks are fantastic news for the wild population.

"Each of these young birds has an important role to play for their species and will go on to become part of the captive breeding program, or be released to the wild at Yellingbo.

"Helmeted Honeyeaters are fast-growing,

so most of the chicks are now independent from their parents, we only have a few still left in the nest with mum and dad," Ms Lane said.

According to the Healesville Sanctuary, the Helmeted Honeyeater was once common across Victoria, and is now only found in a single location on 661 hectares of land in Yellingbo.

The last remaining home for these critically endangered birds is both an oasis of hope and a constant threat, with the prospect of fire or disease a real risk.

Helmeted Honeyeaters are a unique Honeyeater subspecies, distinguished by the golden-crested cap of feathers on their heads.

Australia is renowned for its abundance of unique plants and animals, with many species not found anywhere else in the world.

A black VE Holden Commodore was travelling in excess of 100km/h in a 50km zone and did a large burnout on Saturday 23 February at 7.43pm in Bell Street, Yarra Glen.

The vehicle has distinguishing features and black and white rego plates.

Two males were in the vehicle at the time.

Speedster caught On Sunday 3 March at 1.37pm a 44-year-old Doncaster East man was detected driving at 122km/h in an 80km zone in heavy traffic on Victoria road in Coldstream He received a penalty notice for $685 and six month's suspensions driver's licence.

Smoke warning Victorians can expect smoke in Melbourne and across the Victorian landscape over the coming days as a result of multiple fires burning across the state.

Firefighters are working hard to control more than a dozen fires burning mostly in the east and southeast of Victoria, which will take time and means there will be an increased level of smoke which might be unhealthy for some people.

As part of firefighting operations, back burning is occurring to protect life and property. Residents in the surrounding areas can expect increase in aircrafts to assist in back burning, including aircranes.

Tyres staked A Helmeted Honeyeater at Healesville Sanctuary.

"Visitors to Healesville Sanctuary are incredibly lucky to be able to see Helmeted Honeyeaters for themselves in our Fighting Extinction aviary," Ms Lane said.

"Each visit to Healesville Sanctuary directly contributes to the recovery of local endangered species like the Helmeted Honeyeater."

Four-wheel-drivers in Toolangi have alleged that they had four tyres staked when driving in Toolangi State Forest along Breakoday track.

A post on Facebook mentioned that the drivers were left stranded in Toolangi after they drove over a number of purposefully planted stakes which caused all four tyres to lose pressure.

The driver dug up four stakes over 20 metres of track.

Some fines room to move Victoria’s infringements system has recently been overhauled resulting in some significant changes to the ways fines are handled and now importantly takes family violence into consideration through the new Family Violence Scheme.

All fines are now administered through the new body, Fines Victoria, creating a more streamlined access point for dealing with fines.

The Family Violence Scheme recognises that family violence may play a role in events that result in a person being fined and allows for fines to be withdrawn in certain circumstances.

Visit from the UN

By Michael Doran Each year, UN Youth Australia in consultation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade select the Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations. Kareem El-Ansary is the 2019 Youth Representative and on Monday 4 March he visited Healesville High School as part of his National Listening Tour.

The Listening Tour is designed to visit schools across the country and listen to what young people have to say about the issues that are affecting them. In September Kareem will present what the youth of Australia have to say to an assembly of the United Nations in New York.

Healesville High Assistant Principal Laura Mitchell, said that she first heard of the program when contacted by Yarra Ranges council.

"When we got the opportunity to be involved our principal, Allan Rennick and I were keen to make it happen.

Kareem said that more than 15,000 young people were heard in the 2018 program and he is hoping to reach even more this year. "Its difficult to say exactly how many young people we'll be able to engage with but we'll be working hard to meet as many as possible," he said.

"I'll be visiting young people in every state and territory in Australia and will also be engaging with decision-makers to shed light on the great things young people are doing across the country, the issues they care most deeply about and the ideas they have for creating positive policy change."

From there it continued on with brainstorming sessions where the issues most important to the group were teased out to become inputs for the presentation to the United Nations.

Speaking after the the visit, Laura Mitchell said that it had been an enriching experience for all of the students involved and was something they would build on in their student leadership programs for 2019.

"The students found it really pleasing that their views on important issues were listened to and taken seriously and for having the opportunity to express them in this encouraging forum," she said. "For the younger students it was a great opportunity to hear and learn from the older students in an encouraging environment and that is something I found to be really positive."

The Andrews Labor Government is standing with Victorians affected by fires across the state.

More than 2,000 firefighters are still working to manage fires burning across the state, including in Bunyip, Yinnar South, Dargo, Licola and Cambarville in the Yarra catchment.

Emergency Relief Assistance grants of up to $540 per adult or $270 for children are available for eligible households for items like accommodation, food and clothing.

Relief payments totalling more than $350,000 have already been made to 152 people requiring urgent assistance.

The Government urges anyone from fire affected areas who needs support to attend a relief or recovery centre and see departmental staff at that centre.

Community relief centres have been established at Pakenham, Drouin, Bairnsdale, Morwell and Sale, with more than 1,200 locals already attending. A recovery centre has also been established at the Bunyip Showground and Recreational Reserve.

These centres are providing locals with the latest fire information, as well as insurance and legal advice.

The Government has been in contact with the Insurance Council of Australia, who are committed to processing payments in a timely manner.

Agriculture Victoria has established a Relief and Recovery Incident Management Team based at Ellinbank to work with landholders to assess injured livestock and provide appropriate treatment.

An infinite cosmos

By Michael Doran On Sunday 17 March, Hearth Galleries will present an afternoon of Aboriginal Cosmology at its Healesville Gallery, commencing at 3pm.

Dr Ewen Jarvis, curator at Yering Station Art Gallery will be in conversation with astronomer Dr Duane Hamacher and astrophysics student Krystal De Napoli on the the mysteries of the cosmos and its link into Aboriginal culture.

Hearth Galleries Creative Director, Chris Joy sees the discussion as linking the connection between deep time and space, as depicted in the current 'Infinite' exhibition at Hearth, and the concept of 'connection to country'.

"The discussion will provide insight to the depth of understanding Aboriginal people had and have of their world," she said. "The interview will discuss the role of Aboriginal art as another way of understanding Aboriginal cosmologies."

"My hope is that the conversation will integrate the often disparate subject areas of science, art, anthropology and ecology in furthering our understandings of the role Aboriginal cosmologies play in social cohesion and land management," she said.

‘Hello, Healesville’ wants your story

By Jed Lanyon Australian playwright Hannie Rayson and ABC's Michael Cathcart are undertaking a major community arts program in Healesville.

'Hello, Healesville' aims to collect stories from Healesville residents to showcase a snapshot of the entire town through writing and performance.

Ms Rayson and Mr Cathcart invite all Healesville locals to share their story and take part in writing and performance workshops to learn how to best tell their story to others.

"We're looking for the quirky or the funny.

You can be saint or a sinner. The more colourful the story the happier we are.

"Whether you are a district nurse, CFA volunteer, involved in the timber and logging industry, a chippie in the hills, or a wine grower in the region ... The key is to provide a portrait of the town," Ms Rayson said.

Even those who are uninterested in performing in front of others are still urged to provide their story for the project.

The workshops will give people the opportunity to learn directly from Ms Rayson and Mr Cathcart to develop or hone their writing and performance skills.

The workshops will take place at The Memo, commencing on 10 March and running every Thursday and Sunday. The project and performances will be on display on 1-2 June.

"I hope that we can help people to develop skills as they need them, structuring work and writing, inspiring them to write, edit and work up their own stories," Ms Rayson said.

Ms Rayson is the author of several plays including Hotel Sorrento, Inheritance, Life after George and Extinction, while her husband Mr Cathcart is a presenter of The Stage Show for ABC Radio National.

couple of fabulous Healesvillians.

"We've already met the neighbours and had a party so we feel very welcomed," Ms Rayson said.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Full STEAM ahead now Science, tech, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) set students up to be critical thinkers for life.

That is the belief at St Joseph's Primary School in Yarra Junction.

St Joseph’s Discovery Centre is in its second year after the successful introduction of a specialist science program in 2017.

Each week students and class teachers attend a 50 minute science lesson in which they develop their scientific understandings and skills. These sessions are led by specialist teacher Brianna Loves with class teachers attending for professional development allowing them to take the science learning which happens in the Discovery Centre back into their classroom.

Students also attend a 50 minute visual art lesson each week where they study the principles and elements of art and develop key techniques.

Each term students study the work of a different artist and integrate their science theme into their art work where possible.

Ms Loves developed the STEAM curriculum drawing on her previous experience as a science teacher and curriculum writer. She has attended science education conferences both in Australia and Finland which has helped tailor a curriculum which is unique to St Joseph’s.

"The vision for St Joseph’s is to become a STEAM school not just offer specialist subjects," Ms Loves said.

"We are taking a whole school approach

with all classroom teachers involved in professional development and planning.

Embracing body image

By Jed Lanyon Upper Yarra Body Image Group screened a documentary at Healesville's The Memo on Wednesday 6 March.

'Embrace' is a documentary that looks at body image issues and the pressure society and social media places on people to strive for unrealistic body shapes, which can result in mental health issues and eating disorders.

Embrace has been shown worldwide and has been widely praised as being an excellent way to open the conversation about body dissatisfaction and the potential associated health problems.

This event was hosted by the Upper Yarra Body Image Group, funded by a Community Development Grant by the Yarra Ranges Council and by Eastern Access Community Health.

Some 100 Year 10 students from Healesville High School, Cire and Little Yarra Steiner School attended with their school welfare teachers and were greatly supported by many of the local health care providers.

After the screening, the various service providers introduced themselves and informed the students how to access local services if they have any issues causing them distress.

Once the students returned to school, debriefing sessions were held to allow for discussion of the film and any issues or topics that the film raised.

A group of budding Healesville artists have helped create two large-scale temporary sticker artworks installed on the side of the Memo Hall and behind fruit and vegetable shop Toscano's Varra Valley.

The young artists aged 13-18 years codesigned the artworks named 'Surrealesville' and 'Kids these days' with professional artist Gulsen Ozer and contributing artist Andrea Innocent.

The 'It Takes a Town' project is a youth and community development project initiated by the Healesville and District Service Provider Network (HDSPN) funded by council.

The project aims to mobilise broad community support to make Healesville a place where young people are supported, enabled and empowered.

The artworks represent a current snapshot of young people's voices and will remain on display for three months.

Cr Fiona McAllister said the artworks were informed by the experiences and aspirations of more than 100 local young people from Healesville High School, Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association, The Salvation Army's youth group and The Good Life Farm.

"Gulsen led the young artists through a creative process where they physically and emotionally mapped Healesville and developed

I'm not really human. I'm from a faraway galaxy. At home I'm a historian of horror. In the entire universe, Earth is my favourite place.

Where else do you find child raising practices specifically designed to damage children?

Where else do you have organised games where sentient beings kill each other to score points? (war) And best of all, where else is the entire global culture designed to destroy its own life support system?

What has been your most memorable moment?

When I got married. And the birth of my kids that was pretty special.

What would your final meal be?

I don't really care.

What event, past present or future would you like to witness?

The future whereby some miracle we've created a global culture that encourages and rewards the best in human nature. Co-operation compassion and decency.

What is your favourite book?

From Depression to Contentment: a self-therapy guide ... It's always the last book I've written.

Which four guests dead or alive would you invite to a dinner party?

Barrack Obama, Pope Francis, Dalai Lama and Malala (Yousafzai). But then I wouldn't mind Gandhi there as well and Martin Luther King and (Nelson) Mandela, Al Gore. All my heroes.

What is your favourite TV show?

We haven't had a television since 1975 ... But probably Sesame Street. That's one of the last I remember watching.

What are you working on right now?

I'm writing a science-fiction series, which is going to be five books, I'm currently working on the fifth one. And two weeks ago I sent the first one off to a publisher.

Which object that you've lost do you wish you still had?

I don't know I'm not tied up with things. Things are only tokens. One of my cliches is that only two things matter in life: What you take with you when you die, and what you leave behind in the hearts of others

The River Folk Festival returns for its second year in Warburton from Friday 15 March to Sunday 17 March at various venues across the town.

Bear & Moon Productions has now announced the line-up of international favourites and an array of local acts. Some of the international acts include Red Tail Ring (USA), Scott Cook (Canada), and songstress Dana Sipos (Canada). Hello Tut Tut, The Seduceaphones, Malcura and Santa Taranta will also have everyone on their feet.

The Festival will again host Nia Dance and Yoga Loves Music sessions, for those wanting a bit of stretching and movement in the morning, before chilling out with Tom Richardson, Cass Curran or The Mandy Connell Trio.

If quiet and delicate is more your style, St Mary's Church will host storyteller and songwriter Lucy Wise, Charm of Finches, Joyce Prescher and Sage.

Local acts, include The Anecdote, The Bean Project, Lily and King, Kristian Mizzi, Phoebe like the Moon, Tinman, Cath Connelly, Spiritus, Orpheus in the Underworld, Woody's World for Children with his new Lets Play!, as well as a Youth Music Mentoring Program for aspiring local young musicians.

The Festival will play host to a marketplace,numerous workshops and a dedicated Children's Space with storytelling, felting, face-painting and other activities for young children and the young at heart.

By Jed Lanyon Parabeach volleyball player Nick Coburn has been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming Beach World Series Open in Pingtan, China.

This will mark Mr Coburn's fifth tournament over 19 years but he explains that his sport receives very little funding.

"Because we're not a Paralympic sport at the moment, we don't get funding from the Paralympic Committee.

To be able to represent Australia at the Beach World Open Series in China, Mr Coburn has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds to cover the costs of the tournament.

The tournament will run on 9-12 May and Mr Coburn is hoping to raise $3000.

"It's not just flights and accommodation but entry fees, uniforms, paying for facilities and coaches.

"We haven't been able to get a team, just because we are all self-funded," Mr Coburn said.

The success of tournaments like these may influence the Paralympic Committee to add parabeach volleyball to the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.

Mr Coburn loves the opportunity to be able to represent Australia internationally.

"It's just an honour, it's the best country in the world, I love it when you pull on the green and gold it's just something different ... It's a dream come true.

"I'm 36 in a week. It's getting towards the end of my career. I don't expect to be playing in 2028 (LA Paralympics) and I hope I'm not because I hope there's some young kids coming through to take my spot.

"But I'll take the honour while I can. And

There were two outstanding low scores on Wednesday 6 March at the Stroke & M.McGrann Bag-day Qualifier.

Kevin Conway had a most impressive net 62, to qualify for the bag playoff in December.

After a very successful first weekend where thirteen athletes collected 3 medals, Yarra Ranges Athletics went even better with 15 athletes earning one Gold, one silver, three bronze and four 4ths.

YCVA finals action sees sides pad up and firm up

Humphrey (3/4) was the main beneficiary of a good all round performance from the Burras bowlers.

Warburton-Millgrove now set their sights on another finals campaign, and will relish the opportunity to go head to head with their old sparing partners, Mount Evelyn.

The final game of the round saw Seville close out a brilliant back end of the season as they outlasted a disappointing Yarra Junction outfit.

Seville batted first, and in an entertaining battle between bat and ball posted a competitive 10/140.

Captain Leigh Aitkins was the star at the top of the innings with some useful partnerships with Liam McGookin and Daniel Gale.

This start was matched by the Eagles bowlers as Kevin Bomford (2/17) and Brad Nightingale (5/27) turned the screws on the remainder of the order to give themselves a chase able total to remain in finals contention.

Yarra Junction's achilles heel all season has been its batting.

Often Kevin Bomford has given his team an ideal footing, this time with the support of Marcel Kocher, only to get himself out at an inopportune time followed by a customary collapse.

So true to form, the openers gave the Eagles a bright start, only to be unravelled by spinning father and son duo of Andy (5/9) and Liam Kay (2/21).

The Eagles would be bowled out 56 runs short of their target.

Yarra Junction will be left to rue a disappointing seasons they entered the season as one of the favourites, and left as a non-finalist.

After five months, the make-up of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association finals has been finalised in an intriguing final round across all grades.

Such is the closeness of the competition, that the dust will need to settle on the final round scores, before semi-final arrangements can be made.

It would seem the semi-final make up will see Mount Evelyn (1st) play Warburton-Millgrove (4th) and Seville (2nd) play Wandin (3rd).

Mount Evelyn will start favourite in the run home with a body of work that includes just one loss, however they won't be the form team.

That honour goes to Seville, who has been undefeated since Christmas.

Mount Evelyn stumbled, tripped and nearly fell over a desperate Wandin team.

The Mounters struggled to get out of first gear against a disciplined Bulldogs attack, and after beginning at 3/7, courtesy of early wickets to Mat Herriot and Rob Henderson, the home team battled from there to post a total.

Kane Jones and Andrew Giblin combined to push the total on, but just as they looked to have turned the innings, both fell in another flurry of wickets.

A 30 run 10th wicket partnership between Darcy Fraser and Chris Anderson, was the only saving grace as the home team limped to a total of 108.

All of Wandin's bowlers contributed to an excellent performance, with David Thorne leading the way with 3/34.

Wandin would have to prove their mettle after a dismal month with the bat.

An early run out didn't help proceedings, but a spritely partnership between Bryce Edwards and Darren Trembath soon had the visitors on track to a crucial victory.

The equation was pretty simple for the Bulldogs; win and finals were assured, lose, and their fate was in the hands of the other results.

Wandin were simply unable to match the class of the bowling that was to come. Some loose shots, combined with some quick full bowling at the stumps spelled disaster. The trio all combined to heap considerable pressure on the batsmen as they were reduced from 2/48 to be all out for 50.

Wandin's final hopes remained intact courtesy of other results, but a semi-final match up against a red hot Seville will present a tough ask.

Warburton-Millgrove jumped into the finals race courtesy of a big final round victory against Healesville.

The Burras bolstered their ranks with some experienced inclusions, and immediately looked a better team.

Tom Dalley (3/22) had the home team on the ropes early with three wickets up front reducing the Burras to 4/34.

A string of useful partnerships ensured the home team would not only bat out their overs, but post a useful total of 8/149 on a ground that hadn't yielded many runs all season.
