Parabeach volleyball player Nick Coburn has been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming Beach World Series Open in Pingtan, China.

This will mark Mr Coburn's fifth tournament over 19 years but he explains that his sport receives very little funding.

"Because we're not a Paralympic sport at the moment, we don't get funding from the Paralympic Committee.

To be able to represent Australia at the Beach World Open Series in China, Mr Coburn has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds to cover the costs of the tournament.

The tournament will run on 9-12 May and Mr Coburn is hoping to raise $3000.

"It's not just flights and accommodation but entry fees, uniforms, paying for facilities and coaches.

"We haven't been able to get a team, just because we are all self-funded," Mr Coburn said.

The success of tournaments like these may influence the Paralympic Committee to add parabeach volleyball to the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.

Mr Coburn loves the opportunity to be able to represent Australia internationally.

"It's just an honour, it's the best country in the world, I love it when you pull on the green and gold it's just something different ... It's a dream come true.

"I'm 36 in a week. It's getting towards the end of my career. I don't expect to be playing in 2028 (LA Paralympics) and I hope I'm not because I hope there's some young kids coming through to take my spot.

"But I'll take the honour while I can. And then hopefully it'll encourage some more kids with disabilities to come and play to be able to send a good team to go and play in Los Angeles," Mr Coburn said.

By Derek Schlennstedt A Lysterfield woman's morning routine was interrupted on 4 March when she received the life-changing news that she is now over $1.9 million dollars richer from winning division one in TattsLotto.

The Lysterfield resident held one of the two division one winning entries nationally in TattsLotto draw 3925, drawn Saturday 2 March 2019. Each entry took home a division one prize of $1,977,896.39.

The woman revealed she would use the money to pay off her mortgage and visit her family overseas.

"I'll pay off the house, that's it, then I'll be mortgage free" she said excitedly.

"I'll also share it with my family ... I'd love to be able to help out my family.

"My family lives overseas, so I definitely will go on a holiday to visit them. I might even surprise them with the news when I get there."

The winner, who wished to remain anonymous, bought her marked 12-game entry at Palm Plaza Lotto, Shop 1 Kiosk 10, at Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre.

Palm Plaza Lotto owner Sineth Sar said she was thrilled her outlet had sold its fourth division one winning entry in less than 18 months.

"I think we are a lucky store because a little while ago we did a renovation, and when we reopened I made sure everything aligned with feng shui.

"We also had the reopening blessed by a monk so I think the good energy in store makes our customers think positively."

Hills lending a hand

By Derek Schlennstedt The hills community has rallied to provide support to those affected by the recent bushfires.President of Kallista-The Patch Fire brigade June Cabena is helping to make a difference when she donated much needed food for dogs and cats.

There are at this stage over 150 dogs that have been rescued and over 220 horses all of which need food and some medical supplies.

On the Gembrook noticeboard hundreds of residents opend their homes to those who had lost properties.

Over the weekend and into the week following, Andrew Spark of Gembrook IGA ensured the IGA was open to anyone and everyone well past the usual closing time.

"Hi again Gembrook community, I've decided I'll keep the shop open for a while and see what this wind does. So I'm here if you need any supplies or just want to drop in to say hi," he posted.

During the Bunyip State Bushfire emerald SES crew were helping at the re-fuelling zone at Gembrook oval.

The Emerald SES acknowledged the generous support of the local businesses that dropped off water, cupcakes and pizza over the three days they were stationed there.

Not only did the food help sustain SES member but it was also given to the helicopter pilots, refuellers and CFA personnel at the refuelling site.

On top of all that bags of ice and fresh baked muffins were also delivered.

With nearly all stations across the Dandenongs called in to help assist at the Bunyip Bushfire, many brigades thanked the community for their overwhelming support.

Emerald SES acknowledged the generous support of the local businesses that dropped off supplies The Gembrook Fire Brigade Also extended a thank you to the wonderful Gembrook Community for the unbelievable support they have shown over the past few week.

"We have had many generous donations of food, drinks and treats and overall general good wishes. Your support is invaluable. There are too many people to thank individually so we hope this gets passed around to everyone in the community," they said in a Facebook post.

"A huge shout out goes to the wonderful traders of Gembrook who made sure we were fed and watered for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, words cannot express how much it meant to us not to have to worry about making sure all our members got enough to eat."

Noel Nealon of Upwey CFA also thanked the tremendous support from community members who dropped of watermelons, sandwiches and water to the Upwey station.

The news that the Monbulk ANZ branch will be closing is a huge blow to the town.

Simon Bown relayed the news on the hills and Dandenongs Facebook page after he was informed of the imminent closure by email.

"Just had an email from ANZ stating they are closing the Monbulk branch in April," he said in the post.

"Sorry to those directly affected. What a shame that one of the most profitable companies in Australia can't afford to support our community any longer."

Residents were quick to point out that the latest ANZ bank branch closure means they will now have to travel to Boronia - the closet branch after Upper Ferntree Gully also closed last year.

The latest closure has drawn the ire of many residents who said that many people in the hills still use the bank branch to do their banking.

"The closing of the branches in the hills makes it so hard for the elderly who still bank the old fashioned way," said Wilhemina.

ANZ Bank will be leaving Monbulk. 191143 "I feel so sorry for people that don't do online banking ... my parents and my family have always done our banking with the Monbulk branch. It will be a huge loss to a lot of people. The girls have always been extremely helpful and welcoming," said Liz. ANZ's General Manager for Victoria and Tasmania, Michael Wake responded to the public outcry and said the decision was made based upon an increased demand for online banking.

On Saturday 9 March at 10:40am a 35-year-old male driver was detected driving unlicensed along Forest Road Ferntree Gully. His vehicle was also unregistered and he returned a positive result for illicit drugs.

His vehicle was immediately impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $879.

He will be charged on summons in relation to all matters.

On the same day at 1:30pm a 44-yearold male driver was found to be driving on a suspended licence along Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully. He also returned a positive result for illicit drugs.

On Thursday 7 March 2019 a 53-year-old male driver was intercepted by HWP members at a Preliminary Breath Testing (PBT) site in Clyde St, Ferntree Gully.

He later returned an Evidentiary Breath Test (EBT) result of 0.103.

He was issued with a $685 penalty notice and his licence was cancelled for 10 months.

"It's almost like they have their own spies and know where we meet to go off, as they were turning up and giving some bags of nibble and water and sandwiches," he said.

Even following the bush fires help has continued to pour in, and on 6 March Woolworths Emerald donated much needed supplies to Bush Babies and Wildlife Rescue and Protection who will be distributing those supplies to various wildlife shelters.

On Saturday 9 March, Olinda Police received a call to attend a motor vehicle accident on the Tourist Rd in Montrose.

Soon after receiving this call Olinda Police were informed that a car had just been stolen from the Anglican Church car park off Falls Rd, Mt Dandenong.

It was established that the stolen car was the car involved in the accident. The driver of the stolen car, a 16-year-old local youth, had lost control of the car at high speed, struck the embankment and rolled the car several times.

The youth was arrested at the scene and conveyed to Maroondah Hospital by ambulance for a full check-up.

He received cuts and scratches and minor abrasions but was relatively uninjured.

After he was released from hospital he was taken to Ringwood Police station and interview in relation to the theft of the car, driving offences and other dishonesty related matters.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Ringwood Children's Court on 12 March.

Sergeant Andrew Herdman said, "this was an opportunist theft of the car. The doors open and the keys in the car. People need to be vigilant on security by locking homes and cars and not leaving valuables in view."

Smoke warning Victorians can expect smoke in Melbourne and across the Victorian landscape over the coming days as a result of multiple fires burning across the state.

Firefighters are working hard to control more than a dozen fires burning mostly in the east and southeast of Victoria, which will take time and means there will be an increased level of smoke which might be unhealthy for some people.

As part of firefighting operations, back burning is occurring to protect life and property. Residents in the surrounding areas can expect increase in aircrafts to assist in back burning, including aircranes.

Some fines room to move Victoria’s infringements system has recently been overhauled resulting in some significant changes to the ways fines are handled and now importantly takes family violence into consideration through the new Family Violence Scheme.

All fines are now administered through the new body, Fines Victoria, creating a more streamlined access point for dealing with fines.

The Family Violence Scheme recognises that family violence may play a role in events that result in a person being fined and allows for fines to be withdrawn in certain circumstances.

Eastern Community Legal Centre has worked with many clients who have sought legal help for a fines debt that they have received

matters Anita Koochew Eastern Community Legal Centre in their name as a result of family violence. For example, due to a significant risk of family violence the client may have been unable to safely nominate the person who drove the client’s car and who was responsible for the speeding.

In other cases, the client may have been forced to break the law, for example, by being made to drive an unregistered vehicle under the threat of family violence.

A new option has also been introduced as part of the overhaul to allow people experiencing significant disadvantage to access a non-financial means of paying fines through work and development permits. This option is available to people who are experiencing financial stress as well as other hardship, such as mental health issues, homelessness, and addiction. However, as this system is relatively new and the process for services to become an approved provider to supervise the permits is onerous, this option is not easy to access for people living in the outer east of Melbourne.

If you’d like to know more about any fines you may have, then you can go to Fines Victoria’s website to access your infringement histories, outstanding fines, photos of an offence, and any amounts owing. To do this, go to the ‘Your Fines’ page and enter your infringement number or obligation number depending on the type of fine you have. You can also find a list of previous infringements using this tool.

Helping our four-legged family members when in need

That’s the message being spread by the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS), who are helping pet owners at risk of homelessness to provide for their pets.

In recent months Tania Bevan, manager at DRERS said they have been inundated with requests for pet food.

“This program has been going for many years, and we’ve helped many people who haven’t been able to afford food for their pets,” she said.

“We find people going through a crisis; they really need their pets more than ever.”

“If somebody may be offered crisis accommodation, but they have to choose between going into a shelter and giving up their pet, they’ll choose to stay on the street because at least they have their dog.”

Given the sudden surge in clients needing

pet food, the not-for-profit organisation is asking residents to drop-in and drop-off any pet food they might have.

Monetary donations are also welcome as the not-for-profit organisation also helps pay vet bills, so that people who are homeless and disadvantaged can keep their close fourlegged companions healthy.

“We’re mainly after cat and dog food,” Ms Bevan said.

“It really makes a difference to someone if we can provide the family with pet food, as it’s such a load off their mind knowing that their pet won’t go hungry or get sick.

“Pets are family is what we say, and we’re all animal lovers so we can understand how upsetting it would be to be unable to provide for your pets.”

The magic inside the walls

By Derek Schlennstedt Even as we dream of shiny new futures, many of us are captivated by images of crumbling buildings - old mansions that have faded from use and been reclaimed by nature, houses that will never again serve as homes.

For 20 years, the lifeless form of Burnham Beeches has cast a silent shadow over the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens.

Its silence has only increased its looming presence and nearly every resident of the hills has looked up at its crumbling paint work and wondered what resides inside.

For the next six weeks, as part of an exhibition by Melbourne Artist Rone, Burnham Beeches is open to the public, and as soon as

you walk inside that colossal wreck there's an air of artful decay and an unexpected beauty that welcomes you.

Behind the craftily draped cobwebs, motheaten furniture, dust-strewn rugs, and staged tableaux of antiques sit portraits by Melbourne street artist Rone.

The resulting exhibition is an eerie and profound experience, with beauty seeping through the broken glass and dust it is a stark reminder of what used to be.

Rone has transformed 12 rooms with interior stylist Carly Spooner, who helped find 500 antiques to fill the space. This is accompanied by haunting soundscapes from Nick Batterham, which include ambient sounds recorded

at the site, as well as floral installations that mimic nature taking over the site.

"What we're trying to do is tell a more personal story, once you start to look around you feel like you're in someone's personal space and really feel that loss," Rone said.

The exhibition has been 12 months in the making, and for many residents the chance to look inside has been a dream-come-true, with many reduced to tears.

"It's a childhood dream come true," said Wendy Worrell from Tecoma.

"I've lived here all my life and this was always a mansion that sat there and I always wanted to come in and have a look ... this is amazing, words just fail me, the entire atmo-

sphere is unbelievable."

Speaking to the Mail, Rone said he was overwhelmed by the response.

"It's amazing to see that we're connecting with people on such a deep and emotional level, as you don't always get that with a flat painting on a wall," he said.

"It's unique in that it has sound and smell and the atmosphere of the building surrounds your whole body and you become very much a part of that environment."

The exhibition will go for another six weeks and is the last opportunity to see the mansion in all its haunting opulent glory before it is redeveloped by Chef Shannon Bennett.

Montrose CFA meet an old friend down on the ranch

By Derek Schlennstedt When Montrose CFA volunteers drove into Mill Valley Ranch to protect it from the Bunyip State Park bushfires, none of them expected to see the old Montrose Methodist Church.

In a post on Montrose CFA Facebook, crews from Montrose arrived in Tynong North on March 3 to assist with the Bunyip fires.

Along with many other duties they performed, they were surprised to see the former Montrose Methodist Church standing high and proud and relatively safe at the Mill Valley Ranch.

The first Church building in Montrose was built in 1888 on James Walkers land, behind the school and partly on land in Trevallyn road.

In May 1919 the Church building was moved 300 yards to Leith Road, and pulled on log rollers by a steamroller to Mill Valley.

Through the courageous efforts of CFA volunteers, who fended off the Bunyip State Park bushfire that was licking at the doorstep, Mill

Valley Ranch and the Montrose Methodist Church was saved.

Manager Sue Ellis said the Tynong North Road horse riding ranch narrowly escaped the flames, which came right to the edge of the property.

"It got pretty scary there, the fire came right to the edge of our property; we're feeling so grateful and blessed that the ranch survived," she said.

"We know there are a lot of people doing it really tough and that there's been a lot of damage, and we feel really sad for them."

Mill Valley Ranch is historic in its own right; first established in 1967, it is one of the area's oldest developments and still runs its western horse riding programs and Christian youth camps.

The Chapel, formerly the Montrose Methodist Church, was built in the 1880s, and the camp's centre, designed like a western village,

Say so long to summer

By Derek Schlennstedt Summer is fading fast and this is your chance to say so long to summer!

What better way to spend the last days of summer than at a wonderful fundraiser for Gembrook preschool.

All the bands of the bush are gathering together to celebrate the end of summer and rock the day away. From sweet solo's that sound like Ed Sheeran to dynamic duo's with audience involvement to ensemble groups.

There is something for everyone!

There will be food trucks, carnival games, free family activities, jumping castles, auctions, raffles and LJ the Magician will be performing a world record escape.

Event organiser Samantha Willis invited everyone in surrounding suburbs to come along.

"This is the first time we've done an event like this and we're opening up to the whole hills community," she said.

"The whole setup is like a giant picnic ground, so you can come relax with the family and kids.

"There will be free family activities and it's just a donation for entry ... we're really passionate to make this free so everyone can join in."

All money raised from this event will go towards a full kitchen renovation at the kinder which is run completely by parents.

It's really important we run events like this so we can make changes to the preschool to benefit the kids.

The money raised will going back into the kitchen want to design brand new kitchen that's child friendly to implement a healthy eating program.

Bring a picnic rug and chairs and enjoy a great day out whilst raising money for Gembrook preschool.

After an art dealer's assistant uncovers a wealth of paintings by deceased, tormented artist Vetril Dease, a dark power strikes out with strange visions and grisly accidents

against anyone profiting from these disturbing paintings.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, who both starred in Gilroy's 2014 directorial debut Nightcrawler, anchor the film with engagingly unlikeable performances. Russo is cunning and coldly charismatic as high-powered art dealer Rhodora, and Gyllenhaal plays superficially sweet yet immensely vain art critic Morf.

The paranormal rules of Velvet Buzzsaw's world are clearly-established from the onset: a vengeful artist's spirit is attacking the main characters through his paintings. You would think this explicit set-up would negate the

tension, but Velvet Buzzsaw generates a sense of grim anticipation, a trait it shares with the slasher genre, as Morf's mental state deteriorates and you wait in expectant dread for each character to be picked off.

Unfortunately, the pacing is erratic: certain sub-plots involving a successful graffiti artist (Daveed Diggs) and a burnt-out painter (John Malkovich), and even Dease's own violent history, are shown too sparsely to carry much impact.

While slightly disjointed, Velvet Buzzsaw is a stylish and unnerving supernatural thriller, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Burning over fire

By Kyra Gillespie As bushfire-affected communities begin to recoup after the devastation of the weekend, mounting complaints are surfacing about authorities' inaction to forest management.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Moore has hit back at the claims, arguing the weekend fires were an unstoppable 'act of God.' "Back burning is quite a dangerous thing to do as they can get away from you - a lot of bushfires start from back burning; where do you stop and start with this thing?

"At times like this everyone likes to point fingers, but I think it was God's fault; lightning came started the fire and the wind came and blew it.

"I know council and other agencies are getting some bad press at the moment, but it's really horrible and unfounded and unfair because a lot of people say they like the bush, but how safe can you make your property alongside it?

"Clearing doesn't do all of that, native animals live in those trees and you have to protect their habitat. People are saying, 'Well now the animals are dead and gone', but no-one knows when there's going to be fire there."

Cr Moore said that while the weekend's procedures will be reviewed, bush living and forest management is a difficult combination.

"After something like this we have to debrief and assess what we can do from now on," he said.

"We do choose to live in regions which are surrounded by trees. I couldn't imagine what it would be like at my place or at a winery that didn't have any trees or birds - the ambience of area would be horrible. So where do you draw the line?"

The Mayor lambasted the surging online negativity surrounding the weekend's efforts.

"I've been belted from pillar to post and I can tell you it's unfair, it's unfair for the CFA who defended those properties, and all they

Gembrook MP and Shadow Emergency Services Minister Brad Battin said a DELWP report reveals there has been a reduction in planned burning to minimise the risk of bushfires in areas such as Cardinia.

The 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission found that 'prescribed burning is one of the main tools for fire management on public land,' however, the DELWP report reveals that the amount of planned burning in bushfire-prone areas such as Cardinia has dropped from 234,614 hectares in 2014-15 to only 64,978 hectares in 2017-18, a reduction of almost 75 per cent under the Andrews Labor Government.

"The 2009 royal commission was unequivo-

cal about the importance of prescribed burning as 'one of the main tools for fire management on public land," Mr Battin said.

"That's why it's so important for the Andrews Labor Government to be upfront with regional Victorians about the true situation with prescribed burning.

Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said CFA volunteers inspected over 293 properties on Wednesday 6 March and confirmed about nine houses had been destroyed and another damaged.

Those numbers are expected to grow.

Planned burning proves difficult, as Mr Crisp explained, "we have been doing planned burning, but with two years of record low rainfall the window for conducting those burns is very small."

The Andrews Labor Government is standing with Victorians affected by fires across the state.

More than 2,000 firefighters are still working to manage fires burning across the state, including in Bunyip, Yinnar South, Dargo, Licola and Cambarville in the Yarra catchment.

Emergency Relief Assistance grants of up to $540 per adult or $270 for children are available for eligible households for items like accommodation, food and clothing.

Relief payments totalling more than $350,000 have already been made to 152 people requiring urgent assistance.

The Government urges anyone from fire affected areas who needs support to attend a relief or recovery centre and see departmental staff at that centre.

Community relief centres have been established at Pakenham, Drouin, Bairnsdale, Morwell and Sale, with more than 1,200 locals already attending. A recovery centre has also been established at the Bunyip Showground and Recreational Reserve.

These centres are providing locals with the latest fire information, as well as insurance and legal advice.

The Government has been in contact with the Insurance Council of Australia, who are committed to processing payments in a timely manner.

Agriculture Victoria has established a Relief and Recovery Incident Management Team based at Ellinbank to work with landholders to assess injured livestock and provide appropriate treatment.

We know that bushfires can have a devastating personal impact, so we're establishing tailored mental health and crisis support services at these community meetings and relief centres, and we're working with Lifeline Australia to make sure more staff are on hand to help those in crisis.

Rock ‘n’ roll with the Tree Amigos A night of fun and laughter coupled with fantastic music is promised when the hugely entertaining Tree Amigo's play at the Monbulk Bowling Club on Saturday 6 April.

The Monbulk Bowling Club has a reputation for great entertainment, regularly hosting local artists on a Friday night in the bistro.

This is the first time the club has hosted the Tree Amigos for a dinner show.

There will be delicious choices of meals on offer, including mains and desserts.

Those who already know the Tree Amigo's, who have been on the music scene for over 30 years, will know to expect a fantastic night.

But for those who are not familiar with the trio, the band has a 400 plus song list ranging from 50s through to some of today's current hits. They play a huge array of different styles including Rock and Roll, R&B, Reggae, Country and top 40 hits from the 80s and 90s onwards.

The band is made up of three creative musicians/singers playing multi instruments pumping out a sound that captures the attention of all age groups. The band members have worked with artists such as Ricky Nelson, Del Shannon and Lee Conway.

By Russell Bennett Often throughout the 2019 season the Gembrook Cockatoo senior side will boast more than 620 games of AFL experience.

But that’s not even the most exciting part of the Brookers’ AFL Outer East Division 2 campaign.

This season former North Melbourne and Geelong big man Hamish McIntosh will join Tarkyn Lockyer (former Collingwood) and Gembrook favourite son Michael ‘Spud’ Firrito at the Brookers under new coach Brad Coller.

But it’s the youth emerging from the club’s junior ranks that looms as the most exciting aspect of 2019.

It’s understood that around a dozen young guns emerging out of a victorious under-18 campaign in 2019 could play regular senior football this year.

Of those, the group is stacked with best and fairest winners (both league and club), best on ground players in grand finals, captains, and vice captains.

It’s a scene never before witnessed at the Brookers - such a large group of emerging talent all rising through together.

Guiding the under-18 crop as coach this year will be club favourite Darrell Maher, who’s set to perfectly complement the work Coller and his staff are doing with the senior outfit.

The on-field leadership group at the Brookers this year will consist of two under-18s, two reserves players, and six senior players. Heading up that expanded group will be Firrito, who will this year step up as senior captain.

That, along with the re-commitment of Lockyer and the recruitment of McIntosh, shows the depth of the buy-in to the club across the senior group.

Two future stars, Harry Snoxell and Frankie Trott, are among the stellar under-18, premiership winning crop of last year who are still eligible to play at the level in 2019.

Coller has a long, storied history at both Thornton Eildon and Gembrook Cockatoo, and effectively considers them both home clubs.

In recent years he’s also coached under Doug Koop at Cranbourne, and been the senior coach of Tyabb in the MPNFL. In 2019 he’ll be taking over the reins at Gembrook from an iconic Brookers figure, Matt O’Neil.

“I’m pretty close with Creep (O’Neil) still, and when he told me early last year it’d probably be his last as coach I started watching a few games because I’d had two years off and I thought that if I had more than two or three years off it was probably too long out of it,” Coller said.

“I still had the passion to do it, particularly with an opportunity coming up somewhere I already had connections with.”

Coller said his whole senior coaching application at the Brookers was based around its unprecedented crop of youngsters.

“It’s sort of a once in a lifetime thing where the first ever under-18 premiership side at the club has 10 or so boys coming up into the seniors,” he said with a grin from ear to ear.

In 2019, Coller’s great mate, and another central figure at the Brookers, Neil Busacca will be his right-hand man, with former gun midfielder AJ Walker also returning to the fold as an assistant.

“Coming in this year, the aim wasn’t to go and recruit 10 blokes,” Coller said.

“We were already only two wins off a grand final appearance (losing the first semi-final to Yarra Glen after defeating Alexandra in the elimination final).

“My focus in my first year is getting the commitment from all the current players, and I’ve worked hard on that and have a good relationship with all of them already.

“If you look at the ones there every night, it’s the under-18 kids leading the way with their commitment, fitness, and their passion.

“It’s really a fantastic feeling around the place. We’ve only picked up a handful of players - Hamish being one of them. He’s a massive recruit for us, but we’ve still recruited young.

Picture: COURTESY OF BETHANY HUTCHISON McIntosh’s great friendship with Firrito is the key reason for his arrival at Gembrook, and he’s already highlighted his commitment to the group.

He has an ongoing role with Carlton in the AFL as a specialist ruck coach, while Lockyer will continue his work as coach of the Collingwood academy. It’s expected that both could play around 10 home and away games this season, and would be available for any potential finals.

Coller isn’t shying away from the fact that the Brookers’ goal is to once again claim the Division 2 senior premiership and advance out of the tier.

This time, under the newly formed AFL Outer East umbrella - which also includes all but one of last year’s South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) clubs - Division 1 is the second tier, below Premier.

But many of the clubs in Division 1 are nearby to Gembrook, geographically.

Coller has a lasting relationship with Firrito and his family, dating back to their junior days at the club. Firrito’s brother, Carl, was a premiership team mate of Coller’s at the Brookers in 2000.

“They’re just a genuine family,” he said.

“They’ve always got time for everyone.

Spud has never changed. Even though he’s had a decorated AFL career, he hasn’t changed a bit - he’ll always still stop in the street and have a chat to you.

“I’ve made him captain this year. He came back last year and wanted to just jump in and have a crack and help out, but this year he’s ready to step up and take on a bit more of a leadership role.

“Most of the juniors were a bit in awe of him to start with, but then they realised how

genuine he is. Now he’s like just another mate.

He’s just got this incredible influence though.

When he speaks, everyone listens.”

As for McIntosh’s role in 2019?

“He came to our race night at the Pakenham racecourse a few weeks ago,” Coller said.

“He said: “I’ll just play where the coach puts me ... but I’ll play full-forward!”

McIntosh is expected to spend plenty of time inside forward 50, while also alternating through the ruck with the likes of Col Bastow, who he’ll now be mentoring.

Brooker fans will see an increased professionalism from the group this year - including everything from improved skills, to fitness and recovery.

Ultimately, they want to be playing Division 1 football when their new facility is up and firing in the coming seasons.

Panthers post big score

By Richard Millot Eildon Park has made the most of the second chance, posting a solid score in their preliminary final against Knoxfield.

The Panthers elected to post runs early, which was well justified as Ben Morris posted 49 from the top to be 2/68.

David Smyth was busy down the other end of the pitch, revelling against the Knights attack before falling cruelly for 98 after being the key to transition into the middle order.

With the score at 4/210, Tom Boxell and Zac Wilson begun to claim wickets as the overs ticked along, including the wickets of key contributors Josh Dowling (55) and Jarrod Hicks (33).

The Knights rallied hard in the closing overs, claiming 6/32 to finish the innings in the final over for 278.

It was the Daniel Cormack show in the Decoite Shield preliminary final, the South batsman reaching 97 as part of the effort against the visiting Rowville.

Cormack's innings was the highlight with

the willow, whilst Steve Sandhu claimed 3/60 for the Hawks to lead the attack.

Rowville will be working hard on Day 2 to chase down the target and set up a Derby grand final against Lysterfield.

In the first of the grand finals, Knoxfield posted 5/282 against The Basin in Division 3, with Matt Plumridge reaching triple-figures for the Knights.

Electing to bat first, Plumridge lead from the top to carry the bat through the innings, eventually finishing on 128 not out, including 14 fours.

Matt Train was the partner in crime at the top of the order before being dismissed for 44.

Despite Ben Carnell claiming 3/56 from 20 overs for the visitors, James Petrovski hit 32 late to finish off a competitive total for the Bears to chase on Day 2.

A Team effort from Knox Gardens in Division 4 has put the Falcons in good stead in their match against Rowville.

Efforts from Hayden Morrison (71), Andrew Potts (60), Jason Buljabasic (56*) and Jay Wagner (33) were the key to the Falcons reaching

a solid score, posting 5/265 for the Hawks to chase on Day 2.

In the first of the Split-Innings finals, Knox City have the early honours, reaching 2/117 from their 35 overs against Knoxfield.

The Tigers won the toss and batted first, denying the visiting Knights attack from claiming early breakthroughs. In the reply, Brodie Paroissien (28*) and Rob Harris (28) both reached Day 1 starts to end at 3/86.

Division 6 is evenly balanced as Rowville reached 2/107 from their overs against Monbulk.

In response, Monbulk sit at 3/88 and will want to overhaul the deficit on Day 2 to take the Premiership up the hill.

The Division 7 decider is poised for a grandstand finish as The Basin and Ferntree Gully do battle.

The Basin elected to bat first, with Vito Blangiardo reaching 55 not out at the change, forming the bulk of the Bears' 2/110.

Not to be outdone, the Blues reached 3/105 to all but level honours on Day 1.

Upwey got the early jump on Belgrave in

the Division 8 final, the Tigers sitting at 4/127 from their 35 overs.

The Pies sit at 5/85 and will be wanting quick runs in the second stage of their innings.

Meanwhile in B1 One Day Grade, St Johns Tecoma is the first club to win a senior premiership this season, defeating Johnson Park in the Final by two wickets.

In front of a home crowd, Johnson Park elected to bat first but was in trouble early as the Saints attack ran through the top order to have the Sharks at 3/32.

Paul Adams claimed 3/21 for the Saints, whilst with the bat Chirag Pindoriya lead the way for the Sharks with 28 as the home team was dismissed for 96.

Despite the low total, it was game on as the Sharks bowling attack, led by Bhavtik Vekaria with 5/19 from his eight overs, were equally as attacking without conceding.

Brett Smith was the shining light in the lowscoring affair, his unbeaten 37 not out helping provide support with the bat to reach 8/97 to claim the premiership.

Monbulk Thirds end up falling short on the big stage

By Tom Watson With all senior teams out of the finals except for the 3rds, it was an away grand final against Rowville for the grand prize in division 6.

Losing the toss and being sent into the field, early inroads were made by Rab Noonan and Craig Heppell to have Rowville 2/40.

From there a partnership took over to take them through to the close of their 35 overs, with the score on 2/107.

The chase started well with Jason Simmonds and Liam Mackin steering the ship

through to 0/37 before both fell with the score on 2/46, with Jason Dekkers soon behind.

Again a partnership was the key to safety, with Brayden Caldwell and Michael Adams reaching the close at 3/88.

Day 2 dawned with the Monbulk Hawks economical with the ball, restricting Rowville to just a run an over for the first 20 overs of the session, with constant wickets falling throughout.

Rab Noonan and Criag Heppell finished with 3 wickets each, while Michael Adams and Steven Utting both wound back the clock to

pick up 2 each.

An 8 the wicket partnership of 36 proved frustrating, with Rowville ended all out for 182.

With 95 to win and 7 wickets in hand, Brayden Caldwell and Michael Adams picked up where they left off, steering Monbulk to 138 before the 4 the wicket fell, Caldwell for 44.

A few overs later it was Michael Adams, out for 47 leaving the Hawks at 5/149, with 34 to win required off 66 balls.

A head high full toss almost incapacitated Craig Heppell who was forced to retire hurt,

pairing up David Williams and Steve Utting who combined for 15 runs.

With the fall of Steve Utting, 12 were required off 24, but instead Monbulk lost 4/0 to be 9/172.

Craig Heppell returned to the crease but was unable to steer the ship home with Chris Defina, with Defina bowled to leave Monbulk all out for 179, 4 runs short of victory.

The under 14s fronted up to Upwey/Tecoma in their semi-final to play off in the grand final next week.
