Property Lift out

Pakenham resident Anita was forced to leave her cattle out in a paddock at Nar Nar Goon when the Bunyip fires hit. She does not know the fate of the house, cattle and the pets there. This view was from Bald Hill Road in Pakenham on Picture: ROB CAREW Saturday. 191054

Fire despair! By Jessica Anstice Pakenham resident Anita is facing sleepless nights as the Bunyip State Park fire continues to burn out-of-control and she is left in the dark about whether her cattle have survived. Lightning strikes started six separate fires in the north-west corner of Bunyip State Park on Friday evening. Firefighters were able to extinguish four of the fires and the remaining two merged on Saturday morning. The fire was described as ‘much larger’ than those in the state park on Black Saturday by CFA assistant chief officer Trevor Owen. Unable to protect her 20 Limousin cows situated in a paddock on Olson Road in Nar Nar Goon North has brought stress and worry upon Anita. “I’m concerned for my cows and the wildlife. I’m absolutely praying to God that everyone and the animals are safe,” she said.

I’m not allowed out there yet and that’s what’s killing me at the moment. “If I had had needed to go there to grab whatever I would’ve gone in a heartbeat.” Anita said she will be ‘devastated’ if she

finds out her cows didn’t make it. “I’m just guttered. It’s the animals. That’s their territory. They can’t evacuate like humans can,” she said. “If people were allowed to clear their land it wouldn’t have been as catastrophic as it has been. “The firefighters are the heroes, so are the water-bombers. It’s the greenies and the council that need to approve of clearing land.” Anita is planning on going back to her cattle as soon as she is allowed in. Cardinia Shire set up relief centres at the Pakenham Hall and Kooweerup Community Centre and was quickly overwhelmed with donations and offers to help. The Casey Cardinia Foundation has set up platform for donations. Anyone wanting to contribute financially to victims can do so through http://www.everydayhero.com.au/ event/BunyipFireRelief
