Casey Softball has been without its club rooms for the whole of this current playing season.

"It is the first time since the building works have been in progress that we have been robbed," Ms Bourke said.

"Softball is a family sport and we try to keep our fees low to encourage more families to play - something like this does not help us at all.

"The use of the containers, whilst not ideal, made it so we could keep equipment at the grounds rather than transporting it back and forth every week," she said.

Narre Warren Police are investigating.

Casey Softball has been left devastated after more than $8,000 of maintenance equipment was stolen during a smash-and-grab at Sweeney Reserve in Berwick.

President Dot Bourke said a ride-on-mower worth $6,000 was taken from a temporary shipping container sometime on Thursday 21 February and the early hours of Sunday 2 February.

A push lawn mower, two weed blowers, a whipper snipper, two angle grinders, a cordless drill and more were also allegedly stolen in the raid.

According to Ms Bourke the bandits used bolt cutters to cut through the padlocks of the storage container.

"The members of the association are devastated that these people can be so callous as to steal from a sporting organisation," she said.

She said the club was undergoing an upgrade with containers needed as new club rooms were being constructed.

Ms Bourke said the club wasn't sure how it was going to make up the loss: "It will take a couple of years for us to get over the expenses that replacing this equipment will cost."

"To whoever did this, think of all the kids and adults you have just disadvantaged.

"The theft of the ride on lawn mower means that now our volunteers will have to hand mow some of our diamonds in order for them to be safe to play on," she said.

Holy site given green light

By Brendan Rees An abandoned gym in Narre Warren described as a "drug den" will be knocked down and transformed into a church.

Casey Councillors approved a planning permit to be issued for the site at 5 Rebound Court during their meeting on 19 February.

The long abandoned site, which has was originally opened in 1980 as the Rebound Leisure Centre has become a hive of vandals, drug users and squatters - just metres from a neighbouring childcare and kindergarten.

Last year, Star News reported dumped shopping trolleys, bins, graffiti-strewn walls and a makeshift table with milk-crate seats and a discarded bong being sighted. The applicant for the proposed church is Australasian Conference Association, who acts as a trustee for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

According to a council document, proposed developments predominantly consists of internal rearrangement of the existing building, including construction of auditorium (with mezzanine seating above), hall, Sabbath school rooms, cry room, kitchen, laundry, Deacons Store and ADRA Centre.

The church will cater 116 patrons from Sunday to Friday, and up to 200 patrons on Saturdays and special events, under the proposal.

Special events would include 10 wedding events, 10 funeral events, four celebratory events, and three religious events with a closing time of 11pm.

"All new citizens coming to Casey generate economic stimulus which can contribute to

the creation of jobs and prosperity for all our residents," he said.

Cr Rex Flannery said the proposed development was a win-win for the community, saying

it would "to clean it up and beautify that end of the street."

"Having someone utilising it will deter hopefully people thinking about going there for creating damage to the building and also using it has a drug den," he said. When asked when works would start, Cr Flannery said: "I'm pretty sure they're keen to get started as soon as possible - the sooner the better."

Renata McClutchie of Narre Warren, who has been dropping off her daughter to Glorykids Childcare and Kindergarten next door for the past four years, said she hadn't seen any unruly behaviour at the abandoned site but supported the idea of the church development.

The proposal does not seek to alter the existing access and parking arrangements, the council document says.

Vice-president of Narre Warren Business Group (NWBG) Dale Munckton said "With the application approved we hope there will be no negative impact to the traders and that council will be pro-active in managing any parking/ traffic issues."

Neighbouring business owner of Fountain Gate Taxation Service Jeff Riddle said since the gym's closure, intruders "continually break into the rear."

"They've tried to set it alight at times too. I've been told that most of the cars that park around the back are luxury vehicles - the drug dealers," he said. Several years ago, the former facility was touted as a potential mosque and community centre by the Hazara group, the Etrat Institute of Australia but was rejected by Casey council due to an abject parking shortfall.

There's Great White hope

By Brendan Rees A two-tonne dead Great White shark that was rescued after being abandoned at a wildlife park is in "good shape," says the owner of her new home.

The shark named 'Rosie' was lifted onto the back of a truck and driven down the Bass Highway - past a welcoming party on Kooweerup - en route to Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys in Devon Meadows on Thursday 21 February.

Owner of Crystal World Thomas Kapitany says his team had been busy derusting and cleaning up her tank since her arrival.

"You can see how murky the tank is; we just needed to keep flushing the tank until she's 100 per cent clean," he said.

Rosie, who was originally found dead in 1998 in tuna fishing nets in South Australia, was preserved in the wildlife park in Bass.

However, since the park's closure in 2012, her tank has sadly been the target of vandals, with side windows smashed and rubbish thrown inside.

"It's massive creature," Mr Kapitany explained. "She's looking a lot better - quite a lot of scratch marks where things were dropped in around her, so she's a little beat up."

about one inch thick had been cracked by vandals, he said.

He said before his team began using expensive chemicals, they needed to make sure Rosie's tank wasn't going to leak.

"At moment we've filled the tank up with 20,000 litres of water. We're actually pressure testing her tank and see if we have any leaks," he said.

It is the first time Mr Kapitany has taken on a dead shark at Crystal World which boasts more than 300 tons of specimens including crystals, dinosaur fossils and meteorites stored and sold from the site.

"I'm doing because I want to do it. To me this is what gives me my highs, not having money in the bank or having a flashy car.

"We know what to do, we know how to go about it, it's just time and money," he said.

He said he found some air bubbles on side of tank but to replace it would be "mind boggling expensive."

After pressure testing, he said about $6,000 worth of glycerine would be used to get rid of the creases in her body.

"Glycerine will give us optical clarity and the best state of preservation," Mr Kapitany said.

Mr Kapitany said they were in the process of building a new building for Rosie with a

concrete pad to hold her final weight of 30 tonnes.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise $100,000 to prepare Rosie's tank.

A remarkable $267,088 was raised at Casey's Relay for Life on the weekend.

The official relay opening started at 6pm on Friday at Akoonah Park in Berwick, a whopping 67 teams walked for 24 hours to raise significant funds for Cancer Council.

Event organiser Donna Hamilton spoke about hope at the official relay opening ceremony.

Ms Hamilton said the relay represents inspiration.

"We had lots of laughs, lots of tears and a lot of fun. But there was also a lot of hope," she said.

"There is a lot to be said about hope and even more to be said about those who display it and those who wear it with courage and dignity.

"Hope is when you hear those dreaded words 'you have cancer' and you still push forward."

She said, "Hope is being in the middle of a terrible diagnosis or caring for those loved ones and still having the ability to smile.

"And it's knowing your illness may be chronic but still finding a way to live and love life to the absolute fullest. Never ever give up hope."

Casey Relay for Life hit over $4m in fundraising last year and after this year, they are well on their way to $5m.

"It's an incredible amount of money and we're hoping to crack $5m in 2020," Ms Hamilton said.

"Yet again, we're the first event ever to hit that amount of money raised for cancer research in such a short amount of time."

During her opening speech, Ms Hamilton thanked the Casey Relay for Life volunteer committee for their efforts this year.

Another well deserved win for Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Pearcedale.

The sanctuary received the prestigious silver recognition for Ecotourism at the Australian Tourism Awards in Tasmania.

Congrats to their founder Michael Johnson and the wonderful team.

Five people were arrested on Tuesday morning following an alleged drive-by shooting in Narre Warren South last year.

The incident happened on Berwick Springs Promenade at 12.30am on Saturday 30 June.

Detectives with AFP, local officers and the canine unit executed seven search warrants at properties in Clayton, Coburg North, Cranbourne, Dandenong South and Narre Warren South on Tuesday at 6am.

As a result of the warrants investigators seized drugs, cash, as well as luxury vehicles suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

Five men were arrested including two men aged 28 from Narre Warren South, a 24-yearold Cranbourne man, a 46-year-old Coburg North man and a 24-year-old Clayton man.

The five men are assisting police with their enquiries.

Motorbike rider critical The rider of a motorbike is in a critical condition following a multi-vehicle collision in Hampton Park on Sunday 3 March.

Paramedics were called to reports of a collision involving a car and motorcyclist on Somerville Road in Hampton Park about 1.20pm.

Police allege a motorcycle collided with a Toyota Camry that was driving out of a driveway on Somerville Road about 1.20pm which threw the rider from his motorcycle where he was then struck by a Holden Astra travelling in the opposite direction.

The rider, aged in his twenties was taken to The Alfred Hospital and being treated for lifethreatening injuries including injuries to his abdominal region.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said another man was assessed at the scene with no obvious injuries.

Transport to hospital was not required for this second patient.The driver of the Toyota and the Holden were not injured.

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives are appealing for public assistance after an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Narre Warren on 17 February.

Investigators have been told a woman was out with friends at a licensed premise on Princes Highway when she left about 2.30am.

She was walking along the Princes Highway and crossed Webb Street when she was approached by an unknown person or persons about 2.40am.

The victim was grabbed and dragged to the ground before she was sexually assaulted, police say.

Detectives wish to speak to any witnesses in the area at the time or anyone that may have seen the woman being pulled to the ground.

Teen arrested following robbery A 15-year-old boy was arrested following an alleged assault and robbery in Narre Warren on 18 February.

Investigators have been told the victim a 15-year-old boy was walking towards a shopping centre on Overland Drive with a friend about 4pm when they were approached by a group of youths.

It’s alleged one of the youths assaulted the victim before stealing his mobile phone.

Detectives today executed a search warrant at an address in Hampton Park.

As a result, the boy was arrested.

Poisoned pooches

Shaken from the incident, Ms Miles said she and her partner were now in the process of setting up CCTV cameras around their home.

"I'm so terrified to leave them outside," she said.

Ms Miles said she could not wrap her head around as to who would commit such an act.

"I'm so disgusted that anyone could ever do this to any animals.

"It's really upsetting not to be able to have your own dogs in your own home at the minute," she said.

RSPCA Victoria confirmed it had received a report relating to the incident.

"Given it is an ongoing investigation we are unable to provide any further details at this time," RSCPA Victoria inspector Rebecca Woodhouse said.

She said anyone anybody found guilty of animal cruelty under the The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 could face fines up to $80,595 or two years' imprisonment if the offence results in the death or serious disablement of an animal.

Anyone with information is urged to contact RSPCA Victoria on 9224 222.

Shiree Miles heart stopped when she noticed her dogs eating what appeared to be blue looking meatballs.

The Cranbourne West resident said she was "absolutely terrified" when she saw her Staffy cross Pitbull Bullet laying on the ground eating what she believed to bait in her backyard about 8.30am on Friday 1 March.

"I woke up, I was about to make breakfast and I let the dogs outside," she said.

"I found one of them eating the bait that was out there...I thought it was from something mouldy. It looked like a meatball, and it was really bright blue."

"I took it off him pretty quick," she added.

Within seconds, she says her Jack Russell Stella wandered over and began chewing one of the balls.

"I got that out of her mouth straight away.

"I was like 'Oh my god I think it's rat sac or something.' I got into a bit of a panic and called the vet straight away."

Ms Miles soon discovered three more of the balls in her Calais Court backyard. "They don't have bones; there's nothing for them to eat out there."

The vet told her the dogs had eaten either snail or rat bait and provided some vomit inducing pills.

She said Stella didn't ingest any of the bait while Bullet didn't ingest enough for it to "be an issue."

"They came back the same day and they were fine, they just said to keep a close eye on them, been no dramas," Ms Miles added.

"If it had of happened any other day they probably would've died to be honest, because we usually put them straight out and leave for work."

Ms Miles took Bullet to the vet for a followup check on Sunday 3 March.

Indigenous music hits high note

By Brendan Rees Students of Clyde Primary School welcomed a visit from Aboriginal singer-songwriter Scott Darlow on Thursday 28 February.

Mr Darlow not only sang some of his hit songs but also spoke at length to the students about his Aboriginal heritage.

"Scott was a natural storyteller, regaling the students with tales from his childhood and his experiences as an Indigenous performer, travelling the world," senior teacher Bradley Andrews said.

"Scott's warm and engaging personality ensured this presentation positively connected with the students.

"They enjoyed interacting with Scott on stage and enjoyed his humourous approach," he added.

Mr Andrews said Year 5 and 6 students had been learning about Aboriginal History and Culture and Mr Darlow's performance helped to further enhance the students' knowledge and understanding.

The Melbourne resident held one of the two division one winning entries nationally in Tattslotto draw 3925, drawn Saturday 2 March.

Volunteers from the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Pakenham Unit were called upon to rescue a horse in the stifling heat in Clyde on Friday 1 March.

Receiving the call for help at 9.30am VICSES volunteers were alerted to a horse trapped in mud at a property in Manks Road.

While it was not known how long the horse had been laying in the mud for, it was believed to have been stuck overnight and was not able to stand up by Friday morning.

With the temperature climbing to a high of 38 degrees, VICSES volunteers battled through the mud and sludge in a five-hour effort to rescue the horse using specialist training and the aid of a local vet to pull the horse to safety.

The horse was freed at 2.30pm and given the tick of approval from the vet soon after.

MND home makes $700K

By Brendan Rees and Russell Bennett Scores of interested buyers gathered in Clyde North to put their bid on the stunning home on Saturday 2 March with all proceeds going towards Neale Daniher's FightMND charity.

Henley joined forces with Brown Property Group to build the the four-bedroom, twobathroom property in Newgrange Boulevard at Meridian Estate with the help of 200 local tradies - complete with guest furniture and a Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport in the driveway.

FightMND co-founder and AFL legend, Neale Daniher and his daughter Bec, were on hand to greet the crowds, soak up the auction and meet the new owners of the family home.

It was a fast paced and exciting auction with the Leopold family snapping up the house, land, furniture and car for $700,000.New owner, Roger Leopold said: "I am thrilled with the purchase of this stunning home and has always respected and admired Neale Daniher in what he is achieving with FightMND." Henley Site Manager, Greg Papanikolaou, whose father-in-law passed away from MND, said he had an emotional connection to the project.

"The generosity of trades and suppliers to jump at the chance to help out has been fantastic. We're pretty chuffed," he said.

"It's tough to see (what Neale Daniher is going through) but what he's doing is fantastic in raising so much awareness. It's hard to see him in his battle, but it's fantastic to see what we're achieving today."

Bunjil Place is collaborating with the 2019 Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival to bring you 'Style Swap', an event aimed at trend-setters to swap treasures from their wardrobes, encourage the sharing community and to make memories with friends.

There will also be panel sessions with fashion and style gurus, recycled jewellery workshops and pop-up fashion shows.

Nicole is the proud founder behind Westmorland.

Gym firms up for award Fitness Australia, the national peak fitness industry association, has announced Berwick's Bfirm Personal Training as a Personal Training Business of the Year finalist in the 2019 Australian Fitness Awards.

By Narelle Coulter Narre Warren business Successful Endeavours is set to be given national exposure on Foxtel's Industry Leaders program.

Production company Annex Media spent Tuesday 26 February filming at the electronics design and embedded software development consultancy based at the Casey Corporate Centre in Victor Crescent.

Managing director Ray Keefe has been told the segment will go to air at the end of March.

The program focuses on companies and business leaders who are taking the Australian economy forward.

Mr Keefe said Successful Endeavours came the attention of the show's producers after winning an Internet of Things Award last year for its work on a system which detects faults and problems in SWER electrical distribution systems to help prevent bushfires.

Mr Keefe said he was pleased the cutting edge work of Successful Endeavours would be highlighted to a national audience.

"The national exposure will help people understand just how much above its weight Australia punches in so many industries," Mr Keefe said.

"We are really good at innovation and problem solving and the creative side of things, but we are not good at commercialising things. We are really quite reserved about saying 'this is really good and really worth paying for'.

"Things go overseas not because we can’t do it here, but because we are stuck in the psychology that somehow doing it here wouldn't work.

Mr Keefe said the interviewer was interested to know the Successful Endeavours back story.

Mr Keefe said the film crew spent more than six hours at the Casey Corporate Centre, shooting footage for what will eventually be a five minute segment.

Successful Endeavours has 15 staff, a number that has doubled in the two years since it

relocated to Victor Crescent from Berwick.

Mr Keefe said 2019 was shaping up as a busy year, with Successful Endeavours heavily involved in the Smart Cities space.

He said he hoped Successful Endeavours' appearance on Industry Leaders would reinforce the message that manufacturing innovation is thriving in Australia.

"We're a tiny 15 people business in Narre Warren winning national wards for innovation. It does get attention. I want others to be encouraged to have a go at doing it too.

"There is lots of good, smart stuff happening in Australia but we don’t showcase it well.

That is one of things I’m trying to change."

Expo opens up some career pathways The South East Careers and Try-a-Trade Expo is the largest expo of its kind outside of Melbourne, with more than 100 exhibitors and attended by 4,000 local students and community members.

This year, in addition to exhibitors from major universities and vocational providers, there will also be an employment offering, with more than 500 job vacancies on offer on the day.

Another new feature at this year’s event will be industry-specific forums to get the inside information on what specific industries are looking for in employees and how they recruit.

Executive officer of South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) Andrew Simmons explained that the event, which is now in its 10th year, helps to open up students’ futures by making them aware of the wide range of employment options on offer in the region.

“The Try-a-Trade expo is important because it gives local students the opportunity to meet with universities, employers, TAFEs and training providers at a local level rather than having to travel to them,” he said.

Mr Simmons explained that the expo will feature different elements such as the ‘trade section’ which will encourage students to “have a go” at their chosen trade. Providers within this section will allow students to partake in activities such as bricklaying and the cutting of a mannequin’s hair.

Inside, the expo will take on a more tra-

ditional form, allowing students to talk to universities and training providers about the courses on offer.

“Whether you are wanting to try your hand at bricklaying or hairdressing, wanting to speak to universities about entry requirements, learn about a specific industry or looking for a job, this is one event you cannot miss,” Mr Simmons said.

“They let us cut the cake instead of them which was very special,” Chloe said.

When Chloe Gaspardis gave birth in January last year son, her newborn Andy made history as the first baby delivered at the new St John of God hospital in Kangan Drive.

For Chloe, giving birth at the new hospital seemed unlikely given the due date of her second child was 13 January.

However, she didn’t go into labour until 18 January - hours after the new facility opened its doors.

“I thought for sure we would be in the old hospital,” Chloe said.

“We know what the old hospital is like - we had our first baby in the old hospital.

“But he decided to wait and wait those extra few days and be born at the new hospital.”

Andy Ernest Gaspardis was born at 10.19pm on 18 January, weighing 4.1kg.

The hospital staff had been eagerly awaiting Andy’s arrival.

“Apparently pretty much every staff member walked past the door when I was in labour,” Chloe said.

“Everyone had a little wander past thinking ‘we are getting our first baby!’

“Some of the executives stayed until 8pm hoping they could meet him.”

Andy was a little celebrity at the hospital throughout his stay.

“We had people coming and taking photos.

And the hospital manager came and gave us a congratulations and wanted to personally meet him,” Chloe said.

They were given a little money box marked with ‘first baby born at St John of God Hospital Kangan Drive’.

Mary MacKillop Primary School was delighted to have recently taken their Year 6 students to Canberra to explore the nation's capital.

Curriculum Leader Miss Emily O'Kane said that staff and students found the trip to be full of valuable learning experiences. "(Students) understanding of politics, democracy, and Australian history truly comes alive when they visit locations such as Parliament House, the Electoral Education Centre and Old Parliament House," Miss O'Kane said.

"The children also delight in being exposed to such engaging stimuli for learning at The National Gallery, The Royal Mint and Questacon.

"A highlight for us as teachers was witnessing the way our students participated in learning at the War Memorial, we felt so proud of the respectful students we had with us as they honoured victims of war, and all those who had sacrificed their lives, during the Last Post Ceremony."

One experience which stood out to Miss O'Kane was when the children had a private tour of the public artworks along Reconciliation Place.

"This allowed them to learn about Indigenous culture through rock carvings and then consider issues impacting on Reconciliation," she said.

"We were particularly pleased with one of

Foot, knee or leg pain?

Feet and legs are vital for most daily activities, but are prone to pain, injuries and arthritic concerns.

But what can be done about it?

Dr Paul Dowie at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia's leading foot and leg pain experts, recently shed some light on the topic.

"The most common concerns involve the knee, heel, and ankle, and involve general pain, injury or arthritis. However, these are all very treatable conditions," he said.

"Foot and leg concerns are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it's important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist."

Dr Dowie said that bad foot posture can continually pull bodies out of alignment, which can contribute to postural aches/pains and undue stress on joints and tissues.

"Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet," he said.

"Cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies are now considered unwise for many conditions, can actually delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many cases, so it's important to seek advice from a musculoskeletal expert before undergoing these treatments."

There are now effective, natural medical treatments available for pain, injury and degenerative conditions.

"Treatments such as Prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) are helping many to heal injuries and assist degeneration naturally," Dr Dowie said.

A gloating arsonist has bragged and filmed video of his “handiwork” that destroyed a Lyndhurst car restorer’s shed, tools and cars, the County Court has heard.

David Maddocks, 30, of Cockatoo, with the help of a co-offender, poured petrol through the shed and contents and set it alight following a dispute between the tenant and Maddocks’s sister.

Days earlier, Maddocks had found out that the victim sold off the sister’s horses that had been in agistment on the property due to her being in arrears.

The intense blaze about 3.30am on 4 April 2018 destroyed the shed and $80,000 of uninsured collectible cars on Dandenong-Hastings Road - and effectively the victim’s livelihood.

“It would take me 20 years to collect all that again,” the victim stated to the court.

Four occupants, including the victim, fled a weatherboard house 100 metres away. They escaped injury.

Victoria was in a fire danger period at the time, though conditions weren’t “extreme” that night, Judge William Stuart noted.

In sentencing on 22 February, Judge Stuart noted Maddocks “gloating” over the aftermath during legally tapped phone calls to the sister and associates.

“You wanted to show yourself as the big man,” the judge said.

Maddocks described all the fire brigades at the scene, the sirens, the black smoke and gas tanks exploding.

He listed the destroyed cars including a Chevrolet El Camino, a Valiant, VZ SS ute and a Thunder ute.

“I thought I was Rambo,” he said.

“You f*** with my family, you f*** with my fire.”

Maddocks and his girlfriend parked, bought drive-through food and watched the fire from a BP service station in Skye.

He filmed a video of the blaze as he drove north towards the site.

“Music is playing in the car as you clearly gloat at what you had done,” Judge Stuart said.

He said there were more “sinister” motives than Maddocks protecting his sister.

“What you said and what you did and the pride with which you speak of the events on that night provide a chilling insight into your lawlessness.

“Rarely does a sentencing court have such an insight into the motivations and the actions of an offender.”

In a police interview, Maddocks denied he committed the arson. His version was “basically all lies”, Judge Stuart said.

Maddocks had been released from prison just 10 weeks beforehand. He had just embarked on an intensive two-year community corrections order at the time.

His “litany” of 138 previous offences across 15 court appearances showed a propensity for violence and reckless conduct, Judge Stuart said.

There was also a complete disregard for court orders such as bail, corrections orders, suspended sentences, driving disqualifications and intervention orders.

The accused grew up in an abusive childhood, the court heard. At 4, he’d witnessed the murder of his father, a high-ranking member of a Hells Angels chapter, by fellow outlaw bikies.

He was effectively homeless at 12, escaping a violent stepfather. He descended into alcohol and drug abuse from his teens, with diagnosed ADHD, poor impulse control and borderline personality issues.

“This dysfunctional family life has had traumatic effects on you,” Judge Stuart said.

Maddocks, who pleaded guilty, was jailed for up to six years for one count of arson.

He will be eligible after serving four years, including 324 days of pre-sentence detention.

Cougar pride for Berwick

By Nick Creely Pride is the overwhelming feeling reverberating out of the Berwick City Cougars after the club secured two premierships and runnersup in the Victorian Summer Baseball League on Sunday 3 March.

The Division 4 South team and the Under 18 Metro East Cougars tasted the sweet success of a premiership on the weekend, while the Division 1 Fourths gave it their all but ultimately walked away with a runners-up flag.

Cougars club president Brett Barnett summed it up perfectly when reflecting on just what it means for his club to walk away with such glory after all of the hard work and dedication put in by everyone throughout the Summer campaign.

"It's been a tremendous year for the club," he said.

The Cougars snared their first premiership of the day when they defeated Mulgrave 4-3 in the Under 18 Metro East grand final, with Barnett simply stunned by the ability for his side to rise in the key moments.

"The Under 18 Metro premiership we won, I coached that team, and I sort of knew all year how good the team was - over the last two weeks, they've just played brilliant baseball, and when you do that, rewards come your way," he said.

"It's really good, it was a really tight match, we got down to the very last pitch basically, and luckily, our pitcher struck out that particular batsman and that was it, we won the premiership.

"There were a couple of times where they had bases loaded, and they could've gone ahead, but to my boys' credit, they made some crucial plays when they were needed, and they got out of those situations, and when it was our turn to bat, we went out and scored runs."

The other premiership, the Division 4 South win over St Kilda Saints 6-2 was also particularly special.

"That's (Division 4 South) basically our father-son team, there's six sets of fathers and sons and an extra - as you would imagine, all the dads are extremely proud to play with their sons, and all the blokes there play Masters on Monday night and play with their sons on Sunday," he said.

The Division 1 Fourths also capped off a sublime year with a brave performance in the grand final against Essendon 8-6, picking up the runners-up flag.

But, Barnett said, as a whole the club has enjoyed the rewards of all its hard work, pointing to the success of the Division 1 Firsts side, that showed some tremendous signs despite finishing 10th on the table

The Berwick City Cougars snared three flags over the weekend.

"Last year we were in Division 2 and got promoted this year - we stay in Division 1 next year, and hopefully we can build on that, we've got the experience and we were a bit nervous in the first half a dozen games, but the boys got their act together which is great," he said.

And the Cougars are on the lookout for a

new coach, with Barnett explaining that the club is looking for someone to take the club to the "next level".

"Our club coach has got a very young family and decided he won't go again next year, so we're on the lookout for a new club coach," he said.

"I know from seeing all the different teams playing in Division 1, we've got a lot of improvement, but I can't see why we can't be a force in the next five years or so."

A $250,000 All-Star Mile dream is well within reach

By Hayley Wildes The All-Star Mile, the world's richest 1600-metre horse race, is just around the corner and Berwick local Blake Hutchins could be walking away from the event $250,000 richer.

The race, which is being held at Flemington Racecourse on 16 March, boasts a $5 million prize pool and is the only race in the country where the general public helps choose the final field of horses.

In its first year, the All-Star Mile is truly a unique sporting event with 10 horses being voted in to the field, while a further four horses were granted wildcard entry into the race.

Hutchins, who was one of almost 140,000 people to cast their vote on a horse, voted for Amphitrite and with the horse being among the top 10 vote-getters, qualified for the race.

He has a fair racing pedigree. His great grandfather, Ray Hutchins, trained 1973 Melbourne Cup winner Gala Supreme, which was strapped by his grandfather Ian. Blake's father Darren is a former racing steward, who is now a partner in OBrien Real Estate.

Of the 5784 people who voted for Amphitrite, Hutchins won a random draw and has been named as the 'owner ambassador' of the horse.

Hutchins, who has had an interest in horse racing for much of his life, chose Amphitrite because the three-year-old filly has got up for him before.

"I think she has a very good chance to win it."

When he got the phone call that he'd been chosen at the 'owner ambassador' for Amphitrite - who's current odds to win the race sit at $10 - Hutchins couldn't believe his luck and admits it still hasn't sunk in.

"I found out two days before it was released and I wasn't allowed to tell anyone, so everyone found out on the day," he said.

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but it was a big shock and I wasn't really expecting it.

"When I entered it, I thought it was just another competition that you don't hear back from, but it was amazing."

Whilst Hutchins is in the running for a $250,000 payday, if Amphitrite places second or third, he'll still win a very handy $80,000 or $40,000, respectively.

'Spolly' has peeled off 728 runs at a tick over 60 with three centuries and almost half a dozen half-centuries, and will be the key wicket for the Bucks right from the outset. David White is that equivalent from a Springvale South perspective. The former South-Africa A star cracked 149 off 121 when the two last met, and has scored 59 runs at an average of 98.3 from just nine innings. If the Bucks are to claw over the line, White will almost certainly be the man to set the scene.

KEY STATS: Springvale South and Buckley Ridges are the two most powerful batting sides in the competition, with the Bloods averaging almost 217 runs per innings while the Bucks average 185; albeit they've had a drawn game. It makes the all-important toss just that more interesting. It's often said that runs on the board in finals count for everything, but with the firepower embedded within each batting side, running any target down is a definite possibility.

THE FINAL WORD: Throughout what has been a fascinating Turf 1 season, both Berwick and Hallam Kalora Park have proven that on their day, they are a genuine premiership threat, whereas on the flipside, both have been at times inconsistent in patches. The Hawks enter the clash in some patchy form having lost their last two fixtures against Mordialloc and Berwick, but with finals sown up several weeks ago, it's probably too hard to read too much into their form. It's pretty simple for both sides, there's no second chance, with the loser eliminated from the premiership race and the winner taking on either Springvale South or Buckley Ridges in a preliminary final.

But as Mordialloc proved last year, finishing outside the top two doesn't mean that a flag is out of the question, and both of these sides - if they can click into gear at the right time - are both massive threats.

The top-age junior competitions have received a significant boost after AFL South East recently announced the coming together of the Frankston and Districts Junior Football League (FDJFL) and South East Juniors (SEJ).

The FDJFL and SEJ will unite in competition in both Under-17 Boys and Under-18 Girls after club representatives met with AFLSE Regional general manager John Anderson and chief operating officer Shaun Connell last week.

The meetings came at the request of clubs, to explore the potential interaction of teams in both leagues to address competition concerns across the FDJFL and SEJ. At both meetings, AFLSE received in-principle support from clubs and will now proceed with the challenging task of pulling the competition together. The composition of the new league could see up to six divisions of U17 Boys, complemented by a single division of U18 Girls.

The boys competitions will accommodate a mix of top age, bottom age and hybrid teams in graded divisional set ups.

Connell said there were many benefits associated with the new format and thanked

clubs for understanding the unique challenges in creating even competitions for both boys and girls to participate in.

"The main objective is to create sustainable and even competitions that provide an incentive for boys and girls to continue to play football," Connell said.

"The combined FDJFL and SEJ model is certainly in the best interests of football across the region, and clubs are certainly on board in that regard. Given we now have the mandate of the clubs, we will work on operational matters which need to be sorted out quickly including the creation of new competition rules.

"The clubs have been terrific, recognising that the new model is in the best interests of football and that working through some difficult operational issues will be seen in that light.

"We look forward to working closely with both the FDJFL and SEJ clubs to bring this new competition to fruition. It's an exciting initiative for junior football in the region."

Maroons avoid relegation

By Nick Creely While much of the attention of the final round of the DDCA Turf 1 season surrounded the final four tuning up for a massive finals series, arguably the most important match of the round was played down at Carroll Reserve.

In the relegation battle, St Mary's and North Dandenong put everything on the line, with the loser to be dropped down to Turf 2 next season.

The Maroons won the toss and elected to bat, with in-form opener Austin Heldt (74) finishing the year off on a high to guide the visitors to a respectable 7/164. Akshay Ballal also chimed in with 30 himself.

With the ball, star spinner Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/28) was once again incredible, while Keppler Fernandez (3/16) bowled superbly.

Rhys Serpanchy (35) looked like being the man to keep the Saints in Turf 1 next season, but his dismissal saw the home side fall from 3/58 to 117 all out, with Ricky Solomons (3/23) making the most of his chance in the ones to cause some damage.

It means the Maroons will stay up in Turf 1 next season as they look to build on a promising season with a young side.

Buckley Ridges, meanwhile, finished the home and away season on a high, knocking off Berwick at Park Oval.

Batting first, the Bears clawed their way to 144 in 34 overs, with Matt Robertson top scoring with 44. Rob Peat (2/20), Ben Watson (2/17) and Matt Goodwright (2/4) each chimed in with multiple wickets.

Paul Rudd (47) made the most of his chance at the top to help get the Bucks home after the early wicket of Daniel Watson, with David White (26), Greg Todd (28 not out) and Troy Aust (29 not out) also in the runs.

Rising spinner Isaiah Jassal (2/28) once

again showed tremendous signs for the Bears.

Mordialloc finished the season well, knocking off Hallam Kalora Park at Frawley Road.

The Bloodhounds restricted the Hawks to just 8/152 off their 40 overs, with Ian Daniel bowling sharply with the new ball to finish with 3/28.

The visitors started brightly with Brendan Morris (45) and Ian Daniel (41) knocking away 61 for the first wicket, but the Hawks fought back to have the visitors 5//12.

But a late surge from the Bloodhounds saw them get home with seven balls and three wickets left in the shed.

And in the final match, Springvale South (8/183) survived a scare to knock off Heinz Southern Districts (8/152).

In Turf 2, Narre South well and truly bounced back from a shock loss to Cranbourne in the previous round, completely dismantling St Brigid's/St Louis.

The Lions bowled first and wrapped up the innings in just under 25 overs, with a stunning Scott Phillips (4/15) burst leaving the home side 4/7 before they recovered to post 92.

Jonty Jenner (45 not out) and Ashan Wijayakumara (31 not out) raced down the target with just the loss of one wicket in just an hour.

Cranbourne, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on earning a shock finals appearance after a loss to Parkmore Pirates to finish the season.

The Eagles could only muster up 122 after a brilliant bowling display by Amal Athulathmudali (5/20), before the Pirates got the runs with three wickets left in the shed.

In other matches, Dingley (5/175) tuned up for finals with a dominant win over Dandenong West (88) at Greaves Reserve, with Calvin Barlow starring with 6/25, while Narre North (4/120) were too good for Narre Warren (116) at Sweeney.

Narre gets ready to roll The bowls finals are here. Narre Warren's Division 2 outfit was at Keysborough and neither team could change its ladder positions. In a close encounter all day, the rink of Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar was the only winning rink (18-15).

Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Geoff Ampt went down in a close game (13-22), and Philip Howard, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Rod Lane faltered after lunch and lost 11-24.

Narre Warren (1) 2-42 lost to Keysborough (1) 14-62.

Division 3 was at Fountain Gate against Cranbourne RSL. In another close encounter, the side went down by nine shots overall.

Janice Moran, Andy Tobler, Paul McNamara and Alan Mark were closest (18-19), while Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom (18-20) were also close. Stan Bulmer, Ernesto Vergara, Glen Cadman and Brian Fraser went down 15-21.

Narre Warren (2) 0-51 lost to Cranbourne RSL 16-60.

Division 6 (six-a-side) was the only winner on the day. On the tricky Cardinia Waters green they had a handy six-shot win. If other

results had gone their way the team could have made the final four, but it did not happen, and they finished fifth. Jeanette Cox, Pam Uren and Enid Gibb won 26-9 and Len O'Brien, Jacqueline Moody and Gary Wilson went down 14-25.

Narre Warren (3) 12-40 defeated Cardinia Waters (3) 2-34.

Saturday was another brutal but confusing day for all teams. Division 3 played at Cranbourne RSL and started early to beat the heat, but failed in the end. Michael Graham, Erik Luyters, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar was the closest losing 16-18; while Mark Groom, Tracey Storm, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (1524); Eric Sydenham, Jim Kempf, Colin Groom and Wilma Stevenson (13-27; and Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cal Lee (11-33) all went down. The loss ended all hope of finals playoffs.

Narre Warren (1) 0-55 lost to Cranbourne RSL (1) 18-102.

Division 4 was at Edithvale, but with only a handful of ends to play the weather intervened and the game was abandoned with the Narre team leading. Forfeits, walkovers and games not being completed has left the team unsure where or who it will play in next week's final.

Division 5 was at Fountain Gate against

Cranbourne. After staying with the visitors for most of the game, they fell away to lose by eight shots. The rink of Ernesto Vergara, Les Clement, Paul McNamara and Zade Bulmer was the only winning rink (18-15); while Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg went down 16-17 on the last end.

Stan Birkett, Andy Tobler, Peter Castricum and John Green (16-20); and Stan Bulmer, Darren Moore, John Uren and Geoff Ampt (19-25) both led but failed to stay in front.

Narre Warren (3)2-69 lost to Cranbourne (33) 16-77.

Division 7 was also at Fountain Gate against Dandenong RSL/Rec. Playing with players short, they struggled hard in the heat. Peter Wilson, Gary Wilson and Laurie Baker won against the odds, while Len O'Brien, Rudi Oost and Glen Cadman only just went down (1516); while Diane Peterson, Leo McGeary, David Entwistle and Brian Fraser (11-28) and Dawn Baker, Dermot McConville and Laurie Baker (11-30) all lost.

Narre Warren (4) 2-59 lost to Dandy RSL/ Rec 16-93.

Seven finals teams for Cranny

Four Cranbourne teams will play finals this weekend, while three teams will compete in mid-week finals during the week.

Cranbourne head selector and club chief John McKenna was crowing after the game on Saturday about the achievements made thus far by all the Cranbourne sides.

Club member Cheryl Wright and her many club helpers put on a great spread for all members after the game, which was greatly appreciated.

Listed below are this week's semi-finals games. The home teams are mentioned first.

Midweek grand finals will then be played on Thursday, while the ladies grand final will be played the following Tuesday.

Weekend grand finals will be played the next day on Sunday.

Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 The Cranbourne ladies had to win to play finals, and at the lunch break they were 12 shots down against Glen Waverley and the day was not looking bright.

However this Cranbourne side is full of

fighters and they were determined to win this clash and play finals.

Team members were asked to be positive and believe in themselves, and that is exactly what they did.

Each Cranbourne rink picked up shots and the home crowd was right behind them as the ladies went on win by two shots and set up a semi-final encounter against Montmorency this week.

Semi-final: Montmorency v Cranbourne Ladies.

Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne had nothing to lose against the second side on the ladder, Carrum, so they treated the final round of the year as if it was the grand final. And they played their best game of the year, too, winning on all rinks by a huge margin of 58 shots.

Skip Frank Byrne and his crew of John McKenna and Shane Morrison were outstanding, winning by a massive 39 shots while Skip Neil 'Buddy' Drummond and his crew won by nine shots, skip Barry 'The General' Thomas and his

crew won by seven shots, and skip Sue Hudson and her rink won by three shots.

Head selector Doug Boggie was particularly pleased with the result, which promises the club great expectations for next year.

Wallace’s ton lifts Swans

In the seconds, the Swans (2/57) are in a strong position to push for victory against the Rams (259), with James Maxwell (3/30) bowling well in his return from injury, in the thirds the Swans (0/5) face a big challenge against the Rams (276), and in the fourths the Swans amassed 6/261.

Dandenong, meanwhile, is in a completely dominant position against Kingston Hawthorn at Walt Galt Reserve.

The Hawks elected to bat, and struggled

from the outset, rolled for 150 in 80 overs, with Jimmy Pattinson (1/22) making great strides in his comeback with injury, but it was emerging seamer Jakeb Thomas (3/12), and reliable pair Peter Cassidy (2/27) and James Nanopoulos (2/23) doing plenty of damage.

The Panthers lost the in-form Brett Forsyth (20) before stumps, but will resume on 1/55 with Tom Donnell (22) and Cam Forsyth (eight) looking to continue their dominance.

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 15 (DAY ONE) After just two rounds this season, Casey-South Melbourne made the tough decision to send club favourite Michael Wallace back to the seconds to find some form.

The club vice-president and sturdy lefthanded batsman responded with class, cracking a century in his stint in the twos before being recalled for the match against Camberwell, where he played a sublime hand of 125 to guide the Swans to a big win at Bill Lawry Oval.

On Saturday, with Luke Wells having jetted off back to the UK to prepare for the season ahead with Sussex, Wallace crashed his second century of the season to guide the Swans to 9/287 at stumps against Ringwood at Russell Lucas Oval.

His 227-ball 113 took his run tally to 547 at 49.7, an incredible turn around considering the early troubles he faced this season.

The Swans took their time to get going after winning the toss and having a bat in the final match of the season.

Despite the losses of Jared Maxwell and Ryan Quirk relatively early, talented youngster Joel Mitchell showed once again he's got the talent to make it at the level by scoring 53, but the Swans fell to 4/93 with the class of the Rams shining through.

That's where the stand-in captain Wallace showed all of his class on what was a stifling hot day. The leftie struggled to find any meaningful partnerships, with Dylan Hadfield (30) also showing plenty of resistance, but it wasn't until number 11 Jackson Fry (three not out off 48 balls) got to the crease, that Wallace was able to settle and start to advance ahead.

Putting on unbeaten 65-runs for the final wicket, Wallace launched at the Rams to post a memorable century after last match being un-

With a round to play, Langwarrin, Sorrento and Peninsula OB are all locked in to play finals, with the final spot to be either Mornington or Baxter.

VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - NORTH/EAST ROUND 13 Noble Park has officially qualified for finals, finishing fourth on the ladder, despite a loss in the final round of the home-and-away season to Kew at Pat Wright Oval.

The Parkers were set a comfortable 170 in 45 overs to chase down, and were bowled out for 168, with skipper Luke Wintle in the runs again with 42.

They will now play Bayswater away from home in this Saturday and Sunday's semifinal.

Endeavour Hills, meanwhile, ended their season with a spirited win against Preston, but have still finished last on the ladder.

The Eagles were set 205 for victory, and got there with seven balls and five wickets to spare, with Awais Ahmed starring with 67 not out, including four sixes. Skipper Vaughan Baxter provided terrific support with a classy 39.
