Bushfires in Bunyip State Park threatened communities in the South-East including Gembrook and Cockatoo who placed under a Watch and Act advice for the majority of the weekend.

Firefighters from across the region spent the weekend responding to multiple fires as a result of lightning strikes in Bunyip State Park on March 1.

A Watch and Act message from Vic Emergency was issued for Gembrook, Whites Corner and Beenak at 5pm on 1 March and remained in place during the entirety of the weekend.

Cockatoo was also included in an advice message, urging residents to monitor conditions.

Two fires close to Gembrook have since been contained, and include one near Gilwell Park Scout Park in Kurth Kiln and another near Beenak East Road.

Fires in Bunyip State Park also threatened parts of Gembrook, though due to wind direction pushed the fire towards Bunyip and Tonimbuk, where a number of houses were lost.

On Monday 4 March a Watch and Act Message was reissued for Beenak, Gembrook, Mount Burnett, Nar Nar Goon North, Pakenham Upper, Tynong North and Whites Corner due to a change in wind direction which caused the Bunyip Fire to travel in a westerly direction.

Throughout the weekend Water bombing aircraft used Gembrook Football oval as a refuelling station.

Following advice from the Department of Education Gembrook Primary School and Cockatoo Primary School were closed on Monday 4 March, with buses stopping at Emerald.

Old road, old troubles I write again about this road.

Late last year I visited the Monbulk Hub to ask the council staff of any planned works on the already made section of Old Emerald Road.

As there had been surveyors along the road I thought that works must be planned.

I was assured that nothing was in the planning pipeline and besides, council did not have any money at all, not a cent to spend on that road.

(A story consistent with what residents of the dirt section have been told by council for years now - there is no money for this road, none at all.)

Well surprise, Santa must have left a huge wad of cash in the council stocking because come the new year, work started on the already made section of this road.

There are newly-completed extensive drainage works from the soccer centre to Glenview Road and the road is being widened prior to being resurfaced.

All at no cost to those ratepayers on this section of the road.

Yes, it's the gold plate with cake, whipped cream and a cherry on top service.

But for those of us on the dirt section, we shouldn't feel aggrieved.

Council flicked us a crumb by way of a grade.

David Keys was a member of Monbulk Christian Fellowship for 35 years and it’s pastor for the last 22 years so it is not unexpected that his passing has left a shadow over the fellowship.

Fellowship member Iris Schuurmans thanked the local community for their condolences.

“To the community of Monbulk and surrounding areas, we send a most sincere thankyou for the love and support that has been extended to us with the sudden passing on the 19th November 2018 of our beloved Pastor David Keys,” she said.

“We all have missed his presence and contribution so much and whilst our grief is still a little raw we have been so blessed by the many contacts made by so many gracious folk to extend condolences to us all.”

“David’s Memorial Service was standing room only as so many folk from the past de-

cades came to show their respect and honour the man that had spoken into their lives over all those years. His impact has been profound and many found his manner reassuring and the grace he extended was sometimes challenging but always true and comforting.

The fellowship has announced that they have inducted Bruce and Lynne Laird to the pastoral role from February 10th.

“Bruce and David were colleagues together and have shared many ministry times together. Bruce and Lynne have a long record of pastoral ministry focused on the growth of individuals,” Iris said.

Monbulk Christian Fellowship Church is located at 84B Old Emerald Road, Monbulk and welcome anyone who might like to visit services at 10.00am on Sunday Mornings. Bruce is available to chat with anyone, whether or not you attend the fellowship, on Tuesdays at the Church Building and looks forward to being an active part of the Monbulk Community.

One map to rule them all

One map to bring them all, and in the Yarra Ranges bind them.

The map looks like something ripped from the pages of a Tolkien book: pyramidal mountains like sharp teeth, forests of glyph-like trees, hand-inked names and even a dragon or two.

But instead of Middle Earth, Brunswick cartographer Adam Mattinson is charting The Yarra Ranges shire, and it looks not unlike the shire from the Lord of The Rings.

Mr Mattinson creates in depth and complex maps and also likes Lord of The Rings. So, in August 2017 he decided to bring the two together.

"I'm definitely a fan of the Lord of The Rings and Tolkien's books, and one of the things that captured my imagination reading them was the maps, so I thought I'd recreate that for our own little backyard," he said.

"I grew up in Mount Evelyn, and went to school in Mount Evelyn, and I feel like the area and landscape of the region lends itself to the Lord of The Rings-esque map."

Mr Mattinson is creating a map of the Yarra Ranges Shire in the style of Lord of The Rings the way down to Ferntree Gully and across to Gembrook.

I Started drawing in my home town of Mount Evelyn, continued it out to Wandin and Seville, and Lilydale, and because the shire is in the Lord of The Rings I thought I might as well include the entire Yarra Ranges Shire.

Having since moved to Brunswick, Mr Mattinson said making the map has brought back his love for the area.

"In making the map, you remember all these areas you visited as a kid."

"Recently I've been working on things around The Patch and Macclesfield and it really is a nice area and rekindles that interest and love for the region."

Pick up for the platypus

Our skin cells, hair, saliva, or blood persist in places we have been.

DNA can be taken from these cells to identify us, just like in crime shows.

Animals are no exception - they leave DNA behind as they swim, crawl, and walk through their various habitats, and just like the criminals who inevitably leave behind traces of their DNA, so too do Platypuses leave behind their evidence.

Tania Preston is one of the people whose duty it is to track these mammals and on Clean Up Australia Day, was collecting samples from Monbulk Creek and also held a clean-up event to ensure the future of these unique and shy creatures in the area.

"We know that from previous surveys of platypus in Monbulk Creek that they're actually quite locally endangered ... these are the last platypus that live in the whole Dandenong catchment," Melbourne Water Waterwatch coordinator Tiana Preston said.

"They used to be found in other parts of the catchment but have sinces receded, so Melbourne water is doing a lot of work to try and improve the habitat in that area and try and keep the existing population we have."

Tania said that the few remaining platypus in the Dandenong Catchment are at risk of being entangled in rubbish.

A shared passion for producing the finest quality lilies in Australia has seen Rob and Mariske de Wit in Silvan build a multi-million dollar vertically integrated company that produces up to six million stems of specialist lilies and Dutch iris annually.

The pair was part of a select few Victorian farmers who were nominated for the 2018 Farmer of The Year Awards.

Speaking to the Mail, Rob de Wit said passion, innovation and a fair dose of Dutch courage led to the success of their business.

“Me and my wife grew the business from 1999 onwards,” Mr de Wit said.

“I grew up on a bulb farm in Holland and my dad was a bulb grower ... I decided to come down to Australia backpacking and liked it so much that I decided to set up shop.

“We started small, with nothing really- just growing flowers from seed and after one or two years we started growing lilies and iris.”

In a little over 20 years, the de Wits have transformed that small family flower-growing business into a multi-million dollar flower producer that sells wholesale flowers to premium markets in Melbourne and interstate.

The pair was nominated for the Farmer of the Year Awards, with particular emphasis on their continuous innovation in the industry.

IN BRIEF Fox baiting Belgrave South Veterinary Clinic have been advised that there is a Fox Baiting program running in the local area from March-May 2019.

The affected area is Balak Willem Reserve (Courtney's Rd), Lysterfield Lake,Birdsland .

There are few initial signs of toxicity with PAPP poisoning. Affected animals first become tired, then lose coordination and lie down. If they have eaten PAPP bait, the antidote must be given within 30-45 minutes of bait ingestion in order for your pet to have a reasonable chance of complete recovery so it is important not to delay action or wait until your pet exhibits symptoms.

Witnesses needed At about 3:25PM on Saturday 23 February two vehicles collided at the intersection of Wellington Rd and Berwick Rd, Narre Warren East.

The old Monbulk township When the depression of the 1890s followed the collapse of the land boom, Village Settlements for subsistence farming were seen as one way of addressing the problem of massive unemployment.

The Dandenong Forest Village Settlement was cut out from the forest reserve and opened for selection in 10 acre blocks.

The township of Monbulk was so named because it was the largest settlement in the new Parish of Monbulk.

Although Monbulk opened for selection in 1893, the area was used for many years before then by timber getters and gold fossickers.

The post office opened on 19 May 1898.

The original town of Monbulk was opposite the primary school and for many years had just three shops to serve its residents.

Monbulk Historical Society president There was Nation’s General Store, the post office and store run by sisters Annie and Sarah Siddle, and the drapery store which also sold confectionery.

The store owners’ residences were behind their shops.

In 1900 Jane Nation opened the general store in Monbulk while her husband Robert ran Nation’s Coaches, a carrying business and coach service between Monbulk and the train station in Belgrave. His son Will later operated the service that continued at least until World War I. Mr and Mrs A. E. Hopton and their two daughters, Marg and Bess, ran the store from 1921 when the town was still without electricity and the water supply came from household tanks.

The Methodist Church land was purchased for £13.2.5 ($24) in 1903 and the building completed soon after by volunteers.

Mr and Mrs Williams bought the drapery shop opposite the Mechanics’ Institute Hall in 1914 and later sold it to Miss Fowler and Miss Bray in 1925.

Confectionery on one side and haberdashery on the other satisfied both mothers and children.

Mr and Mrs Hefford opened a garage and milk bar opposite the end of David Hill Road in about 1950.

Dave Lane opened his garage and taxi service next door to where the panel shop is now.

The Monbulk Primary School started life in 1897 as The Dandenong Forest Village Settlement State School but was renamed Monbulk State School in 1899.

The small school building and nearby hall burnt down in the 1913 bushfire so classes were held in the Methodist Church across the road until the school was rebuilt on the same site on the corner of Main Street and David Hill Road.

Life-saving gifts

By Derek Schlennstedt Seventeen community groups and organisations around the Dandenong Ranges are now armed with defibrillators.

The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group launched its Defibrillator Sponsorship program in 2018 and presented the Cardiac Science G5 Automatic External Defibrillator machines to the 17 groups on 25 February.

These units along with the units gifted to chemists in Upwey and Belgrave last year bring the total of the defibrillator sponsorship program to $52,500.

According to new research in January 2019, more lives than ever are being saved by defibrillators in public areas.

The latest Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry (VACAR) Annual Report shows

that 82 people were shocked using a publicly accessible defibrillator in 2017-2018 - two more than the previous year and the most on record.

The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group Chairman John Waters said it was great to offer these life saving devices to so many groups in the community.

"These units are provided so that in the case of an emergency they are close at hand and can be used if an ambulance is too far away," he said.

"We hope they are never used, but are pleased that there are now 17 additional AED's in our community should the need arise."

Each group receiving an AED will also be given face to face training by Defib for Life.

Community input into bushfire planning

By Derek Schlennstedt Land and fire management agencies are calling on the public to help inform strategic bushfire management planning for high bushfire risk communities in Melbourne's east, including the Yarra Ranges.

Strategic bushfire management planning is a multi-agency process that addresses the risks posed by bushfires on both public and private land.

It uses the latest science and technology and draws on community values that need protecting.

Forest Fire Management Victoria Regional Manager Forest and Fire Planning Damien Taylor said that so far communities in the Dandenong Ranges, the mountain foothills, and further afield have told FFM that the most

important things to protect include; "human life, private property, the natural environment, human health and well-being, infrastructure, regional economies and cultural heritage."

"We've heard that communities in eastern Melbourne want better support for landowners to undertake bushfire mitigation activities, and that they want education and information about bushfire risk," he said.

"We now need community input into bushfire management strategies to help us strike the right balance.

"This feedback will inform our bushfire management strategies and guide future work such as fuel management, targeted community engagement, and prioritisation of government resources."

Graffiti gripe Strong moves are afoot to address the ongoing issue of tagging and graffiti in the Hills.

A combination of street art, police presence and a forthcoming public forum aims to engender a more positive approach to those wielding spray cans.

This public forum will be held in Selby and will feature powerful street art taken from recent travels in the Middle East.

During his travels forum organizer Karl Williams fund that wherever he encountered street art with profound political and social meaning there was practically no evidence of vandalism or mindless tagging.

"It seems that youth in the Middle East are forced to grow up quickly and become politicised, and one of their means for self-expression is the spray can" said Mr. Williams.

"They turn to street art because they're pushing hard to change the system. But in the Hills there are obviously a lot of apolitical kids without much to say for themselves, sad to say.

"To get them passionately engaged in building a better world isn't going to be easy, but it may be the best long term solution."

The Belgrave Traders Association will also be represented at the forum, as they themselves have been addressing the tagging problem with a number of creative approaches.

"In recent years we've been funding youth teams to beautify the town centre with striking murals" said Traders president Kean Flanagan.

"Belgrave is now enjoying a reputation for its innovative street art, especially with environmental themes, and if the art is seen to be high quality, then it's respected by taggers and left alone."

Selby Community House organises four public forums a year, and the house has a vested interest in its own forthcoming forum.

New music horizons seen

By Derek Schlennstedt If you ever have the urge to make music but never had lessons as a kid — or gave it up due to time constraints — don't despair because the Dandenong Ranges New Horizons Band helps adults learn or re-learn a musical instrument in a fun social environment.

It doesn't matter how old you are, you can learn to play an instrument and have fun at the same time.

As part of an annual weekend workshop in March the New Horizons Concert Band is opening its doors to the public for a unique chance to see them perform a range of songs.

Conductor Brian Hogg, said members of New Horizons come from all walks of life with some having never played an instrument

"This is our eleventh year with this group, started in primarily for adults who wanted to play but never did, or people that played left instruments and then came back."

"At the moment we've got 30 people in the band at all levels of experience.

"We have one person who played in one of the military bands and another who played professionally for years and he is probably our oldest member at 98 and still playing.

"There's a real range of experience levels in the group, and as a band we play stuff that suit us as an ensemble and something that everybody can play."

Every year the ensemble hold a major workshop and over a period three days are taught a range of songs which they then play in front of an audience of family and friends.

"On the Thursday they will get some music for the first time and then on the Saturday they are expected to play it," Mr Hogg said.

"It's a fairly short lead time to learn four or five new pieces ... it's about being able to demonstrate to themselves and family and

friend that this is what we've done in the last few days."

Mr Hogg invited people to come along to the performance and for anyone interested said people were welcome to come on the Friday and chat about joining.

"We're a really friendly bunch of people," he said.

"Join us on the Friday day, or just come along to our rehearsals on Thursday's at the Tecoma Uniting Church."

The workshop is a three day event taking place at the Tecoma Uniting Church on Thursday 21 March, Friday 22 March from 7-9pm and finishing with a performance from 9am 4:30pm on 23 March.

Yep, you read that correctly. The brilliant folks at the Belgrave Heated Outdoor Pool are once again holding their annual puppy pool party which means your floofy child can splash around to their hearts content for one whole hour.

On the last day of the season without a load pesky swimmers to get in their way the Belgrave Heated Outdoor Pool - which is normally reserved exclusively for humans - gives dogs the opportunity to have full use of the pool to perfect their doggy paddle before it closes for winter.

RSL’s solid ground

By Derek Schlennstedt Upwey locals will be able to enjoy a new and improved parking area when visiting the Upwey-Belgrave RSL, following the completion of $100,000 worth of upgrades.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino MP officially opened the renovated parking facilities on 1 March, which were funded through the Veterans Major Capital Works Grant Program.

Rainfall had eroded much of the carpark's paving, making it hazardous for RSL visitors and staff and the funding was used to make the surface safe and improve access.

"Upwey-Belgrave RSL has been doing wonderful work to engage veterans and the local community, and hopefully the new carpark will make it easier for them to get even more people into the RSL," Mr Merlino said.

"It will go a long way to encouraging even more guests and members to the Upwey-Belgrave RSL, where they can enjoy a meal and good company.

The Upwey-Belgrave RSL committee, including President David Eaton and Secretary Mark Addison, have been working hard to build up the membership and financial sustainability of the RSL. The upgraded parking facilities will support these plans.

The Veterans Capital Works Major Program is a new initiative announced in the 2018/19 Victorian Budget.

Cancer fight

By Jed Lanyon Several Yarra Ranges medical centres are taking part a world-first clinical trial in hopes of finding the most effective strategies for preventing cervical cancer.

Mount Evelyn Medical Surgery and Selby Family Medical Clinic are among the participants in the Compass Trial by VCS Foundation and Cancer Council NSW. It's Australia's largest ever clinical trial, but the goal is to recruit 8000 more women aged 25 to 38 to take part.

Results from the first phase of the trial supported major changes to the National Cervical Screening Program in 2017.

Participating general practitioner Dr Anita Munoz of Midtown Medical Clinic in Melbourne said she was honoured to contribute to the data that would ultimately improve screening processes here and around the world.

“This trial is a powerful example of women helping other women,” she said.

“If we can confirm the best way of screening using the HPV test, the Compass Trial will completely change the direction of how we screen and prevent cervical cancer globally.

“The Compass Trial is a remarkable Australian medical milestone and I’d encourage all eligible women and practitioners to become a part of scientific history."

VCS Foundation is hoping to have 82,303 participants take part.

It's currently available at more than 570 practices.

Eligible women who are interested in helping are encouraged to call the Compass hotline on 1800 611 635 to find their nearest participating practice and make an appointment to sign up.

The band is best known for its song Summer Time which is the theme song for the television programme Bondi Rescue.

Thirsty Merc formed in Sydney in 2002, and independently released their latest album Shifting Gears back in 2015. They are best known for songs like 'Someday, Someday', '20 Good Reasons' and (of course) 'In The Summertime', all of which will be played at the Belgrave venue, said the bands frontman Rai Thistlethwayte.

"This one is going to be a three piece show, so it'll be a little more intimate," he said.

"You can expect the same thing from any Thirsty Merc show - a lot of singing along and a lot of love in the room, and there will be a lot of tunes that are really the same sort of stuff that we've been doing since 2002."

All the fun of the fair St Paul's Primary School held its biennial country fair on Saturday 16 February.

School principal Michael Watt said "it was a smashing day which followed many months of preparation".

"The 2019 country fair offered all the trademarks of a magnificent festival with beautiful weather and a carnival-like atmosphere," he said.

"The children enjoyed a great selection of rides to keep them entertained and an amazing array of delicious foods were on offer. The stage featured a terrific afternoon of entertainment, a range of stalls were set up, silent auctions were held and raffles were won!"

Mr Watt said that "many people from the community worked together to make it a resounding success". He said the country fair was a whole community effort.

"There were contributions from individuals who prepped, managed and assisted on stalls, as well as involvement from many who assisted with set-up, overnight security and pack up," Mr Watt said.

"A positive vibe created by those who entertained on the stage throughout the afternoon, discreet efforts of many behind the scenes, the generosity of all our sponsors, the presence of so many families - both past, present and future and a general excitement that was created by everyone's positive attitude."

This club wants members Upwey-Tecoma Bowling Club is a small club, nestled among the trees adjacent to the Upwey Sports Ground.

It boasts no more than 90 members, both social and playing, and indeed it is a struggle sometimes for the selection committee to fill

three teams on a Saturday during the Pennant season.

Tecoma will field all three Saturday Pennant teams in the upcoming Finals for this season.

The Club fields three teams for Saturday Pennant, and one for midweek Pennant.

The midweek Pennant team narrowly missed the finals by a narrow points margin.

Bowlers establish record Monbulk Bowling Club established a record during the week when all six sides from Tuesday and Saturday pennant were able to make the finals.

On Saturday 2 March Monbulk 1 played at home against Mooroolbark and needed to win and then hope that one of the top two sides lost in order to host a final on the first day of the finals.

Monbulk won by 24 shots, 91 to 64. Unbelievably, the top side Croydon lost to the bottom side Chirnside Park and this means that Monbulk has finished second and will play Croydon at home next Saturday 9 March in the semi-final.

Monbulk 2 played the top team Cardinia Waters away from home. Peter Francis' team won ten of the twenty-one ends, but was behind all day, dropping two 4s and three 3s along the way. They picked up 4 shots over the last two ends, but still went down 15 shots to 25. Overall, Monbulk lost by 27 shots, 65 to 92.

Monbulk 2 finished the season third on the ladder, just one win less than the top two sides.

Next week they play the semi-final against second-placed Cranbourne at Cranbourne. Monbulk 3 had a bye and has finished in third place and will next week travel to Vermont South for their semi-final.

First-placed Monbulk 1 played Boronia who were in seventh place at home. It proved a much closer game than the ladder positions

suggested. Andrew Bell's rink trailed all day, but were able to obtain some multiples in the last three ends to get up and win by 3 shots, 17 to 14. Richard Cookson's rink was level at the halfway mark, but then they dropped 8 shots in four ends. Overall, Monbulk won by 18 shots, 62 to 44 and this means they will host the semi final against Mooroolbark.

Monbulk 2 who were third on the ladder played away against Ferntree Gully who were seventh. Peter Francis' team had a see sawing battle, but a couple of bad patches led to them losing by 7 shots, 15 to 22. Eric Furby's team had a real battle handling the green and only won five ends for the day, losing 8 shots to 23. Overall, Monbulk 3 won 64 shots to 59.

This win gives them a home final after finishing second on the ladder. So, next Tuesday they have to do it all over again because their opponents will again be Heatherdale.

Terry Miller from Terry Miller Concrete Tanks has been in the concrete tank building business for nearly 30 years. Being from country Victoria himself, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because our tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days of curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo (metal) roof, concrete top or open top tanks.

The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or in fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, you will keep your home cool and wet. Or if need be, you can jump into the tank to keep cool and be protected from flames and radiant heat.
