MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk It was great to catch up with local photographers Chris and Karen Johnson for this week's cover story (see pages 4&5).

The couple are donating their time and mentoring skills to coordinate the 2019 'Emerging Photographer of the Year' competition at this year's Warwick Show, just a few weeks away.

The competition aims to encourage local amateur photographers to capture the 'essence' of the Show in digital imagery. I covered the competition last year and in its inaugural year in 2017 and can attest to the high standard of entries and the amazing local photographic talent we have around here.

I know there are plenty of local snappers who would learn a lot from spending a day or three at the Show, simply wandering around taking shots at their own pace. As a journo who takes his own photos it can be a lot of fun covering a major event in that way, as long as you give yourself time to be creative and inventive.

I'd encourage amateur photographers right across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt to enter this contest, including juniors.

You might be surprised at what you get out of it.

BLATANT THEFT OF WATER STOPPED

Council says the treatment plant standpipe is now secure.

The standpipe was disabled the same day and security cameras and new locks were installed on Monday of this week.

In a statement a council spokesman said that on the Friday "the council became aware that tankers were accessing the standpipe from the Connolly Dam line at the Warwick water treatment facility at night and taking water without permission from council".

"When SDRC staff checked the standpipe, staff discovered that the locks and chain securing the standpipe were missing," the spokesman said.

"SDRC closed off the water supply to the standpipe and installed a CCTV surveillance trailer at the facility and new padlocks and chains on the standpipe to prevent further theft.

COUNCILLORS DUE TO RECEIVE REPORT

NEWS AT FINGERTIPS

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Southern Downs councillors were due to receive a report on the review by council staff of the Granite Belt Community Association's de-amalgamation business case at their February meeting held in Warwick yesterday, Wednesday 27 February, after time of printing of this week's Free Times.

The business case was formally presented by the GBCA to Queensland Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe late last year.

The state government has said that if the business case stacks up - and de-amalgamation will not financially disadvantage the Stanthorpe community the matter will be put to a region-wide vote.

Mr Hinchliffe is waiting on an assessment of the business case by the Department of Local Government and the Queensland Treasury Corporation and in the meantime Southern Downs Regional Council officers have completed their own review.

A report to councillors in the February meeting agenda says council officers "submit that there are assertions within the (GBCA) proposal that are incorrect or

The report only recommends that councillors formally receive it, rather than take a vote to support or oppose deamalgamation.

It also states the council may require the use of outside consultants to conduct a "peer review" of the officers' report, which the council has previously estimated would cost $40,000.

Operators of unmarked water tankers stole water in broad daylight - and at all hours of the night - from the Warwick water treatment plant on Glen Road over several weeks, it has been revealed.

The practice was stopped last Friday 22 February after local residents became suspicious and alerted the Southern Downs Regional Council.

Umpteen truck movements were observed over at least the three weeks prior, with the tankers pulling up to the standpipe just off the side of the road and hooking hoses up to it and making off with raw water from Connolly Dam, not suitable for drinking.

Unlike the water standpipe near the Wallace Street bridge in Warwick the treatment plant standpipe is not metered, so those accessing the water were doing so free of charge.

Local residents have questioned why no council staff appeared to have been aware of the water theft and acted earlier to stop it.

Instead it is believed a resident contacted Mayor Tracy Dobie directly last Friday.

Dam line at the Warwick water treatment facility is intended for council use only.

"The water sourced from the standpipe is raw water and is not drinking quality.

"SDRC is investigating the issue, and at this time SDRC has no evidence to suggest that SDRC staff have acted unlawfully and is not investigating any internal staff.

"If residents suspect that people are taking water unlawfully, SDRC urges residents to report the activity to council on 1300 697 372."

The Free Times also asked the council if some of the unmarked trucks belonged to council contractors legitimately accessing the Connolly Dam water for roadworks and other tasks, as it is understood supplies of recycled water at the Warwick Wastewater (Sewage) Treatment Plant are at an extremely low level.

A spokesman said the use of recycled water "is a priority but there may be times when contractors are required to use the outlet to access water for council works".

"The outlet is now secured but any contractors which are required to use the standpipe are able to access it via a works key," the spokesman said. ●

or Chris and Karen Johnson photography isn't simply a hobby, it's a shared passion.

The Warwick couple have 'day' jobs but pretty much all their spare time is taken up with their 'side' interest their business C&K Photographers.

They're a familiar sight at local events they covered the 2019 Warwick Showgirl presentation evening, for example - and they do weddings, family portraits, school formals and other paid jobs where and when they can.

But they're also big on giving back to the community they live in and love, and this year they've taken on the volunteer task of coordinating the Warwick Show 'Emerging Photographer of the Year' competition.

The contest is in its third year and aims to capture the spirit of the Warwick Show in digital imagery for posterity.

Entrants will spend all or part of the 2019 Show - the 152nd in its history - meandering around the Warwick

Showgrounds snapping all manner of images to try and sum up the true essence of the annual event.

The competition was originally devised in 2017 and was organised by local photographer Storm Lahiff after she discovered the Show Society did not have an archive of historic images from past Shows.

With a new business in town to run, Storm found herself somewhat time-poor when attention turned to planning the 2019 'Emerging Photographer' event and that was when Chris and Karen stepped up to the mark.

And a shout-out to local businesses - sponsors are being sought for the competition.

Chris himself was the inaugural winner in 2017 - check out his cheeky chook photo - and this year he and Karen will act as competition coordinators as well as mentors to the budding local photographers who enter.

based on this year's theme of 'Paddock to Plate', which they'll be given creative licence to interpret in their own individual way.

Entries will be judged by another local photographer, Laura Kubicek - who specialises in newborn photography - with the winners to be announced at a special event a few weeks after the Show, which runs from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 March.

And the good news for those who take part in the competition is it's free to enter and they'll also get free entry to the Show, as well as having access to mentoring and advice from Chris and Karen throughout the Show.

Photography has been a lifelong interest for Chris, while Karen came to the pursuit later in life encouraged by her husband, and they both have diplomas in photographic imaging.

The pair usually spend a good half of their weekend both behind the lens whether it be covering events or simply pursuing their own personal love of landscape photography - as well as editing their images.

"I used to drive Chris around of a weekend to take photos and I'd just sit in the car," Karen says.

"Then I decided to take it up myself.

"Sometimes on a weekend if we've got time to spare we'll just reverse the car out of the garage and flip a coin and decide where to go.

"We're into all genres of photography but landscapes are the favourite, it's just so relaxing."

These days Chris is a funeral director with Warwick Funerals but he's previously been an RAAF mechanic and his love of photography began in high school.

"That was back in the days of film," Chris told the Free Times.

"I was really into photography when I was at school in the early 1980s.

"Then I joined the air force and was there for 11 years and didn't pursue it too much during that time, but when I left (the RAAF) I got back into it and that was when digital cameras were really starting to come into play.

"I love doing landscapes, but I do a lot of rodeo as well."

Karen says the 'Emerging Photographer' competition is all about getting amateur photographers from the region to find out more about what their cameras can do and enhance their skills.

"We want the entrants to think outside the box, including junior photographers, and we've had quite of lot of interest so far from high school students," she said.

"The idea is to wander around the Show and demonstrate all the different aspects of it and just play with your camera.

"Slow down, compose yourself and breathe - and don't be scared of people, ask them if they'll be in a shot doing whatever they might be doing.

"Another practical tip is to remember to 'slip, slop, slap' and carry water and spare camera batteries and memory cards."

Chris says the most important thing those new to photography need to keep in mind is to take their time and properly compose their shots.

"It really doesn't matter what kind of equipment you're using," he said.

"The main thing is composition - look at the background to the shot and make sure

NEW FACES AT WARWICK RSL CLUB

It has been just over a month since a new management committee was elected to steer the Warwick RSL Memorial Club back on track and there's been plenty happening both in front of and behind the scenes.

A new interim general manager Andrew Bowtell - took up his role last week and he has already identified some key areas for improvement at the club, which was facing potential closure not so long ago.

Andrew expects to be in his role for around three months - while recruitment of a new permanent manager is carried out and told the Free Times the club's financial position has "improved substantially" since the new management committee took over.

"I've just been assisting our wonderful staff to provide top service to our members and looking at things like policies and procedures," he said.

"It's about having a point of difference to other venues in town - one of which is the wonderful Kings Theatre as a function destination.

"The new committee is just really committed to the members of the club.

"We're looking at an innovative new menu for the bistro and a possible restructure of membership fees, among many other things."

Working alongside Andrew is a face that will be familiar to Free Times advertisers - none other than our former advertising sales executive Natasha Sheahan.

'Tash' left the FT late last year after deciding it was time to work fewer hours in order to better balance work and a young family, and has recently taken on the role of part-time marketing coordinator for the Warwick RSL. With her extensive local contacts and winning personality Tash will be "out and about drumming up interest in the club" in the community, having already turned around the RSL's social media presence.

And she has plenty of ideas for making a visit to the club more than just a meal and a shot at the pokies.

"We're looking to have entertainment every Friday night in the main bar and ramping up Friday and Saturday night members' draws," she said.

"We're also planning fundraisers like 'Shout A Digger' in April.

"In Kings Theatre I believe we have the best function centre in the region and I'm going to be promoting that extensively."

Another familiar face down at the club belongs to resident butcher Reg Welsh, who with 52 two years in the meat trade ensures diners in the bistro get served up top cuts, sourced locally as much as possible such as lambs from the Shelley family.

Reg is down at the club four days a week and also donates his time maintaining the gardens around the building. ¡ The Warwick RSL Memorial Club will hold a 'membership drive' tomorrow and Saturday outside Big W in Rose City Shoppingworld - drop by and say gday to Tash! �

The Warwick Horticultural Society will hold their 2019 Annual Autumn Flower Show At St Mary's Hall, Wood Street, Warwick next Wednesday 6 March from 12 noon to 4pm and Thursday 7 March from 9am to 4pm.

Exhibits may be staged between 8am and no later than 10am sharp on the Wednesday when judging will commence.

RACING PIGEONS STILL A MYSTERY

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Andrew Dunn laughingly calls his beloved sport of pigeon racing "the poor man's race horse".

He's one of a handful of members of the Warwick Racing Pigeon Club, the existence of which until very recently the Free Times, at least, was unaware.

The club has its headquarters tucked away in Warwick's Henry Joppich Park off Wentworth Street and its members compete in pigeon racing at a number of levels and on a regular basis - indeed, as often as they can get their birds into the sky.

Andrew's love of the sport began as a lad growing up in Melbourne and has never wavered.

These days he keeps and breeds his pedigree racing pigeons in a loft on his Deuchar property and the birds compete in racing events over distances of anywhere from 100 up to 1200 kilometres, against pigeons from similar clubs in places like Toowoomba, Dalby and the Lockyer Valley in Queensland.

On race days the birds all take off from a designated release or "liberation point" in the chosen town and their owners await their arrival back at their home loft.

were the quickest to get home.

Despite modern pigeon racing having originated in Belgium in the 19th century and is thought to have possibly dated back to as early as 220AD - pigeon 'fanciers' to this day still have no idea how the birds manage to find their way home over such vast distances.

"People have done experiments doing things like putting a falconer's hood over their heads and trying to determine if they do it by eyesight," Andrew said.

"There's another theory that it's to do with solar flares or by working off magnetic north or barometric pressure.

"They do seem to know where east is, which is why most people face their lofts in that direction.

"But they can't race over the Great Dividing Range, for some reason that's a barrier.

"At the end of the day we still don't know just how they do it - but it is a real joy to see them come home.

"The wives of pigeon racers have often been referred to as 'pigeon widows' - it's just something that really becomes part of you.

"These are pedigree birds - they have bloodlines just like racehorses.

"There are a lot of imported pigeons in Australia and while they're good on short to medium distances they don't have the same stamina as Aussie pigeons.

"They'd never dream of racing over 1200 kilometres in Europe, for example."

Racing pigeons can take flight as early as four weeks of age.

Andrew said a typical racing pigeon can fly at speeds of up to 100kmh with a good tail wind and while they head off in different directions at the very start of a race, birds from the same loft soon form a flying "kit" or group.

as goshawks and he does lose the odd race bird that way.

"I send them out fairly hungry and whistle them up so they know it's food time when they get back," he explains.

Pigeons can fly within four weeks following their birth and are fitted with their "life ring" within seven days.

While yearling birds tend to be at their natural peak of speed, pigeons - which have

a life-span of up to 20 years - can race for up to four years and can re-produce up until the age of 16.

Racing teams are a mixture of both cock and hen birds and the racing season in Queensland is between May and October.

Andrew Dunn says pigeon racing is a relatively low-cost activity, and he admits pigeon racers tend to be "obsessive".

HISTORIC ’ROSALIND’ UP FOR SALE

"My brothers and my sister had left home or were away most of the week working and studying and I essentially was raised as an only child.

"I can remember friends coming to visit me and I'd be constantly changing my bedroom - there were so many rooms.

"The house was named after the character in Shakespeare's 'As You Like It', I assume by my grandmother."

'Rosalind' features numerous living and sleeping quarters and there's even the old childrens' 'port room' complete with hooks.

The grand old home has been added to and re-modelled many times over the years, and the timber stables in the backyard are original.

It belonged to a former mayor of Warwick - after whom Connolly Dam is named and has been in the family for multiple generations.

The sprawling 127 year old family home 'Rosalind' - next to Olsens Home Hardware on Fitzroy Street and directly opposite Warwick East State School - is for sale and it's a buyer's chance to own a big slice of Warwick history.

'Rosalind', which is also often referred to as 'The Connolly House', is a 13-room 'timber and tin' gem which, while it could use a little TLC, oozes character and Rose City Heritage.

Current owner Mary Higgins - whose grandfather Dan Connolly built 'Rosalind' for his family in 1892 - says it's time to let go of the home she herself grew up in as a little girl.

Mary told the Free Times this week there was no-one in the family to leave it to, with various nieces and nephews scattered across Australia.

While the decision was an easy enough one to make, Mary said 'Rosalind' would always hold a special place in her heart.

"I was the youngest of four with a 13 year gap between me and my next sibling," she said.

THE HOME'S HISTORY Below is the historical background to 'Rosalind', kindly compiled and supplied by Mary Higgins ...

"In 1888 Timothy Connolly (1842-1931) purchased two and a quarter acres of land with frontages to Fitzroy and Canning Streets and in 1892 his son Daniel Connolly (1867-1948) built the house 'Rosalind' on the portion of his father's land fronting Fitzroy Street. Dan built two more houses on his father's land and in 1911 the land was sub-divided so that each house had its own title deed.

Dan, his wife Sarah and their baby son, Timothy, moved into 'Rosalind' when it was completed and it has been occupied by their descendants ever since. During Dan's occupancy he added rooms and verandahs as his family grew and today there are thirteen rooms surrounded by spacious verandahs. There are also outbuildings which reflect the reliance on horse transport in the early days.

The Connolly family arrived in Australia in 1877 as steerage passengers aboard the 'Zamora' and they came directly to Warwick, where they resided in various locations including opposite the Canning Downs homestead.

Dan's father Timothy worked on the railways all his life and when retired he moved into a house which Dan built on his (Timothy's) land. He maintained a canna farm there. Olsens Home Hardware occupies this site today.

Dan attended the local schools and at the age of 16 was apprenticed to a Mr O'Brien.

On completion of his apprenticeship Dan and his cousin James Connolly commenced business as building contractors in Clifton, and they built the first Shire Office in the town. James then went to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia as the gold rush had started and he built some of the famous old

buildings in the Kalgoorlie area, including the Palace Hotel and the Post Offices in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, which are still much admired today. He then went into politics and soon became a cabinet minister.

After 15 years in Parliament he became Agent-General for Western Australia in London, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was knighted by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 25 June 1920.

Meanwhile Dan carried on in his own business as a building contractor in Warwick until he retired. Buildings he constructed include St Mary's Catholic Church, the Criterion Hotel, O'Mahony's Hotel (formerly the National Hotel) and the Sportsman's Club (formerly the Langham Hotel). Dan also owned many rural properties including The Glen, Woodlands at Greenmount, Mile End in West Warwick and Mount Tabor.

Dan was also an Alderman on the Warwick City Council for about 30 years and served two terms as Mayor.

After Sarah's death in 1952 'Rosalind' passed to her daughter Eleanor (Ella, 1893-1985) who sold it to her brother Jack (1899-1983) and today it is owned by his adult children." ● - Mary Higgins

NEWS PURCHASE THE PUB

150 YEARS OF RAIL AT CLIFTON On March 11 1869 the Southern Railway Line to Clifton was declared open by Governor Samuel Blackall, thus allowing settlement on the fertile Darling Downs.

By 1957 the rail site had a telephone connection, weighbridges, cattle, sheep and pig yards, signal cabin, overhead bridge, cranes, loops to the flour mill, butter factory, fuel depot and grain sheds.

After a period of growth there was a downturn, with the passenger train services to Clifton ceasing in 1972 and the station closing to goods in 1998.

Some people of note that walked the

platform include former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, Richard Chamberlain, Sister Elizabeth Kenny, The Duke of Windsor and Dame Nellie Melba.

In 2012 the Clifton and District Progress Association Inc signed a lease with Queensland Rail to run a Tourist Information Centre out of the building, which today includes a gift shop and a historical rail display run totally by volunteers.

To celebrate the history of the station the Progress Association has organised a funfilled day for everyone on Sunday 9 March.

Leyburn's historic Royal Hotel is on the market for $1,250,000.

The Royal Hotel is the oldest continually licensed premises in Queensland. The building as it stands today incorporates the original premises, built 150 years ago.

James Murray was the first licensee, owner and builder of the Royal, and he constructed this building in 1863.

Unfortunately he only held the licence for six months and died from the effects of drinking to excess.

Leyburn was originally a gold mining town and one of the first settlements on the Darling Downs. After the gold mines closed the area reverted to a rural farming community.

-Casey POSITIVE SHOT FOR NETBALL Netball has been given a new shot in Warwick thanks to $321,793 in Fed Govt funding Southern Downs players will soon be able to unleash their skills on refurbished courts and enjoy an upgrade to facilities thanks to $321,793 in Federal Government funding secured by Maranoa MP David Littleproud for the Warwick and District Netball Association.

On Saturday, Mr Littleproud was in Warwick to make the much-anticipated announcement because the association was forced to play away from their 25-year-old home-base courts were no longer up-toscratch.

"When I heard the association couldn't play at home because their courts were in such a poor condition, I knew I had to do something and was able to secure $2900 in funding for the canteen equipment upgrade, under the Stronger Communities Programme, and $318,893 to upgrade four courts under Community Sport Infrastructure Grants program," Mr Littleproud said.

"Our very own netball legend Laura Geitz honed her skills at home here and this upgrade means future netballers will continue to play this great sport in the Southern Downs well into the future.

"You can ask any rural community in Maranoa and they will tell you how important top-notch sports facilities are.

"The flow-on effects are numerous because new faces around town have an opportunity to get involved and make friends.

"This funding also us with access to facilities that match those available in our bigger cities - just because you come from the bush doesn't mean you can't access topnotch facilities."

CLOSE CONTEST The February end of month medley 4BBB Stableford played in Stanthorpe was a keenly contested affair. Eventual winners, Jake Mills and Casey Leotta, had to withstand a count back to separate them from runners up, Mike McAuliffe and Greg Fraser after both teams returned sores of 48 points for their round.

Nikki Waterworth picked up the ladies' pin at three and Kay Webb had best approach at 12 while Lorraine Evans held the approach at 1 and Marg Locke the Pro Pin at 5/14.

Not to be outdone, Matt Waterworth collected the men's pin at three and Allan Accurate at 12. It is rumoured that Ian Pickering's tee shot at 17 may have hit the flagstick leaving him an easy putt for the birdie and he picked and he collected the pin shot. Those chances received a shot in the arm recently as the Warwick Little Athletics Centre received confirmation of a $2900 grant from Coles to purchase brand new sports gear. The grant has been made possible due to an imitative from Coles through the sale of Coles' Community Chiller Bags.

The Little Athletics centre in Warwick is one of over 160 centres across Australia to receive funding from Coles to replace or expand its sports equipment.

Funds for these grants have been raised through the sale of specially-marked chiller bags designed by eight-year-old Lachie MacDonald from Victoria and 11-year-old Charlie De Bruyn from Western Australia.

25 cents from each bag sold is directed to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants.

WINDY CONDITIONS Sporters faced some windy conditions last week on the Stanthorpe course but that did not deter eventual winner Ivan Jurris or Ian Anderson who was Sunday's runner up. Anderson also returned the Best Gross score.

The run-downs went to Wayne Hilton and Angelo Maugeri. Stewart Rayner snapped up the Pin Shot on the 12th and Matt Waterworth the 17th. There were "no takers" for the Pro Pin. Ivan Jurris was not satisfied with just the win on the day he also went home with a meat tray in his keeping.

The other left with Ray "the Boss" Thorn.

A reminder that the annual Maureen Bates Day will be held on March 10. A Two Ball nine Hole Ambrose event has been scheduled by the club. It will be a 9.00am Shot Gun Start. As is always the case there will be great prizes on offer. The BBQ will be operating and the day will wrap up with a big Multi Draw Raffle. If you have not already nominated there is a sheet on the board at the Clubhouse. Be sure to get your nominations sorted. In the meantime, Sporters will tee off at the regular time of 7.30 -8.00am this Sunday.

BUSY TANNY SCHEDULE Bowlers at Tannymorel have been kept on their toes recently. Busy busy busy. Triples on Thursday, the final of the Tanny Classic Friday and Premiere 7's on Saturday. No rest for the wicked.

Naomi Ratcliffe and Olivia Colemen celebrate Maranoa MP David Littleproud’s $321,793 Federal Government funding announcement to revamp their Warwick netball courts.

In the first round they scored an impressive 20-6 win over Brian Brown, Joe Statham & Pete Gynther. They nailed their win when Grumpy outplayed Tony Schubert in the skips only round. His score of 19-3, the icing on the winning cake.

The Runners up Marg Wright, Philpsy & Pete Collis defeated V Adrian L'Barrow, Ian Thompson and Les Clark 18-5 in the opening game and Skip Les Clark had a13-6 win over Less Tyter in the Skip's round. The unwanted lowest score went to Doug Miller, Marg Grayson and Di Walsh The Triples were sponsored once again

by Killarney Co-op and players were well looked after by the ladies in the kitchen.

Friday night was the final round of the Tanny Classic and after six hectic weeks of competition the result went right to the wire.

The winner of the opening 2019 Tanny Classic was Lyn Coleman who accumulated 21 points over the six-week period.

In second place was "the young gun" Jessie Wallace (19points) and third prize to Jim Lamb (18 points). The player with the lowest score was Clayton "Wizzle" Frank (9 points) Locky Boal won the final spider again and collected the cash.

Winners of the final round were The final was saw some great bowls played and the troops are keen for Tanny Classic Two to commence immediately.

Organisers said "Bring it on. So, polish those bowls, Tanny Two kicks off on Friday March 1.

TANNY TARANTULAS BITE DEEP On Saturday the Tanny Tarantulas hosted the South Toowoomba team in another round of the Premier 7's.

South Toowoomba proved to be tough opponents but the team played well and did a great job winning all three games.

In the fours Tuck, Walshy, Geoff and Aaron needed to win the last end to wrap up the game and scored a great eight blowing those Toowoomba players off the green in an unbelievable end to the game. Philpsy played good bowls and had a convincing 31-7 win in the Singles. The pair's team of Sue and Grumpy held their nerve in the final end. With the scores locked up at 16 all they taking the final end 17-16 to seal the win. Post-game reports say Sue claims she was the back bone of the whole show.

Draw shots, yards ons, drives, she is saying she had them all. Others less kind have been heard humming "Wake up Little Suzie; Wake up".

ASSOCIATION CROQUET There was only a small field at Association Croquet last week but the games were competitive. Peter Tunbridge and Carol Verwey had a 23-19 win over Heather Widderick who once again played well. Her opponents both made some good shots on the way to their win.

Andrea Denkewitz also played solo against the pairing of Joy Newman and Grace Howard. She made two ' peels' in the game and pegged out score a 26 - 18 win.

Players received some good news during the week. Long-time member, Pat Schnoor, who has been battling some health issues, is on the mend and may be home soon. The whole of the Croquet community wishes her well.

Conditions for the Gateball group were very testing on Friday morning with the strong winds making it difficult for players.

The opening game was more of a warm up and Team Two (Andrea Denkewitz, Joy Newman, Grace Howard and Heather Widderick) scored a 13-11 win.

In the second game Val Fancourt playing in Team one made some very good shots while Grace Howard had an excellent game.

Team one took the honours 14-9 The result in game three was exactly the same a 14-9 win to Team One. Bill Golding was showing a little wizardry producing the shot of the day; making the very difficult look quite easy.

In the final game Team One made it a clean sweep winning 14-10 thanks to some very good teamwork.

TENTERFIELD SPRINGS SHOCK Tenterfield sprang an upset win in Friday night's rescheduled game against Wanderers. In doing so they sunk the final's aspirations of Wanderers.

Three games were played on the weekend, with the biggest surprise being.

Their win in the 35 over game their first of the season. Unfortunately for Tenterfield it is too little too late.

Wanderers won the toss and batted and while five batsmen got starts there was pressure on Jamie Carnell (48) to deliver a big score. Unfortunately, he could not find a partner to hold up the other end for any length of time.

At the end of their innings Wanderers were 7/169 and probably felt they had the upper hand.

Tenterfield on the other hand gave themselves a big chance although things did not begin well with the loss of a couple of early wickets. freetimes.com.au

Adam Jennings made the night his own and almost single handedly turned the game in Tenterfield's favour with a well-controlled knock of 65. He was well supported by Dan Adames (31). Wanderers watched their finals hopes collapse as Tenterfield chased down the target in the 30th over for the loss of only four wickets. After a promising start to the 2018/19 season Wanderers have now slumped to their fifth consecutive loss, RSL REMAIN ON TOP There were two important games decided on Saturday. RSL has an eye on the finals and maintained their grip on the top of the table scoring a comfortable victory win over Valley's.

RSL set Valley's a moderate target of 151.

It was a milestone moment for Neil Perrit.

He scored his first half century in senior cricket but was dismissed on 50 when he was caught by Carmichael off a ball from Anthony Marino. At the other end of the scale the very experienced Luke Brady played a good supporting role for his team with a knock of 40.

of team bowling.

There was an air of confidence around Valleys who believed they could chase down the moderate total after RSL was dismissed midway through the 30th over.

Valley's Josh Wren obviously did not read the script and continued his good form in his breakout season. He combined with Jason Lawer to dismiss opener David Marino and Dave Gavin. He went on to claim the wickets of Kristopher Fox, Brian Carmichael and Sandro Stefanon notching up a bag of five wickets.

Jason Lawer was very strong in the field taking four catches.

As wickets tumbled the only real resistance came from Captain Damien Anderson who remained not out 67 as his troops were dismissed for 124 in the 28th over.

SOUTHS IN A STROLL Following their upset win on Friday night Tenterfield went into their Saturday game against South's with plenty of self-belief.

They won the toss and elected to bat however their joy was short lived as South's bundled them out for a meagre 106. Mitch Austin took three important wickets in

Friday night's game and on Saturday remained not out 47 to give South's some sort of target to chase as many of the remaining Tenterfield batting line up crumbled. They were all out in the 19th over.

South's put an early end to the game wrapping up a comfortable win in the 16th over. South's lost only two wickets on their way to the win. Captain Ben Staley (49) and Matt Hendry (30) scored the bulk of the required runs but honours must go to South's bowler Alex Cameron had a welcome return to form and set up the win taking 6/54.

With just three rounds of fixtures to play before the semi-finals the race is still on for the Minor Premiership. This week Valleys will be looking for a win over Tenterfield.

The game will be played in Tenterfield so the Valley's players are sure to be wary of the wicket. Wanderers will be hurting after their shock loss to Tenterfield but will have a tough task against RSL on the CF White Oval.
