The 2019 Cardinia Relay For Life exceeded expectations. Chairperson Mark Howard announced at the end of the event that teams had raised an incredible $116,207.29 - with still four weeks of banking to go. “It was a really successful event, given our target was $110,000,” Mr Howard said. Mr Howard said there were 34 teams and a few new ones among those, which was an encouraging sign. He said the organising committee had lost a few workers during the year, but there was interest from a couple of people on the day to help out next year. In the seven years it has been held in Pakenham, the Cardinia Relay For Life has now raised in excess of $660,000. “We are really happy with the way it’s going,” he said. “We have a really good venue and we get a lot of support from the football club, which is great.” The event was officially opened on Friday evening by Cardinia’s Citizen of the Year Dr Harpree Kandra, who stayed on to walk the relay. Awards were presented to: We Not Fit for the Most Laps (611), Where’s Wally Walkers for Best Team Site, Buddies Do Their Bit for Best Baton and the Activity Shield, the Ford Fairlane and Classic Cruiser Club for Highest Fundraiser and Kristin Atwell for Spirit of Relay.
Line of pain By Kyra Gillespie The Pakenham line is one of nine railway lines that will be closed for up to three weeks in April. From April 1 to 23, buses will replace trains on the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston, Sandringham, Mernda, Gippsland and Geelong/Warrnambool lines. Power, signalling and station upgrades will contribute to the disruptions, as well as construction on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel entrance at South Yarra. In a bid to remedy the more than 150
days of planned disruptions experienced by Gippsland passengers since early 2018, their travel will be free. A mixture of express and semi express coaches, including stopping at Parliament station will replace Gippsland line trains for the whole journey from Saturday 6 until Tuesday 23 April. Buses will also replace trains on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines for part of the journey during the same period. Passengers will have to allow for up to an hour extra travel time on their commute. “I urge passengers during this busy time to
check and stay informed about changes to the network, and plan ahead,“ Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne said. It comes as Metro Trains recorded its worst punctuality result for on-time services on the Pakenham line since May, 2017. Additionally, more services were cancelled in January 2019 than ever before on the Pakenham line. More than 17 per cent of services were late and more than four trains, on average, were cancelled entirely every day of the month. Lines are scheduled to re-open on 23 April, after the Easter long weekend.

Local’s name for new park Officer’s newest public park finally has a name and the person responsible for the title isn’t a sporting legend or a government figure - it’s a local resident. The park on Harmony Place at Arcadia Estate, will be known as ‘Gumnut Park’ after Pakenham resident Dean Schembri submitted the name as part of a competition run by Satterley, the developers behind the master-planned community. He won a $2000 travel voucher when his name was chosen from nearly 150 entries during a moonlight cinema event at Arcadia last Saturday. Mr Schembri said he has friends who live at Arcadia and is a frequent visitor to the park with his wife and two young children. “The layout of the park is great for families it’s spacious and has lots of green space for the girls to run around and play ball games,” Mr Schembri said. “My three-year-old daughter is quite the climber, so it’s a fantastic park for her in that respect as well.” Mr Schembri said he came up with the name “off the top of his head”. The Satterley judges felt the name resonated strongly with Arcadia, a community which gets much of its inspiration from literature. “When we saw Mr Schembri’s entry, we immediately thought of Australian author May Gibbs and her characters Snugglepot and Cuddlepie from the Gumnut Babies picture
The park on Harmony Place at Arcadia Estate in Officer, will be known as ‘Gumnut Park’. books,” Satterley - Victoria and Queensland general manager Jack Hoffmann said. “There is also a cubby formed from gumleaves with a gumnut on top in the park, so we felt the name really captured the surrounds and overall feel of the area. “The name also meets council requirements to be officially registered, so along with being a great name, it will also be a name that’s permanently visible on Google Maps.” Dean and his wife haven’t taken a holiday in more than five years - their oldest daughter was nine months old when they got married, meaning there wasn’t even an opportunity for a honeymoon - so the travel voucher is going towards a much-needed family adventure. “We’re yet to make any concrete plans but I’m hoping we can put the money towards an overseas adventure for the whole family,” he said.

A taste for high tea leads to the ride of a lifetime A Pakenham woman won the ride of a lifetime as Clyde residents helped raise $3250 in funds for ovarian cancer research during a High Tea held on Wednesday February 20. Tracey Bradford from Pakenham won the first prize of a Lamborghini Murcielago ride experience, donated by Casey Property Group. About 100 guests enjoyed a high tea with cakes and scones donated by local cafes and pharmacy staff and some fun raffles at the fundraising event held at TerryWhite Chemmart. Guests had the opportunity to listen to speeches by ovarian cancer survivor and local resident Sally-Ann Dale and Katya Gray, whose mother passed away from ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer survivor and Clyde resident Sally-Ann Dale, who spoke at the event, said she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 after she noticed some unusual stomach bloating. “I was working, I felt fine, I didn’t feel sick or anything, but I didn’t like the look of my stomach,” she said. “I went to the doctor and had an ultrasound. Ten minutes after the ultrasound the doctor wanted to see me - I was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer. “I was very lucky I went to the doctor. The main sign of ovarian cancer is bloating, so if you feel bloated, get it checked because it might save your life. If I hadn’t done it, I wouldn’t be here now.”

by ovarian cancer. TerryWhite Chemmart Clyde pharmacist Carolyn Wynen said the event was important
in raising awareness for ovarian cancer “Ovarian cancer impacts everyone,” she said. “Most people know someone who has been affected, whether it’s a mother, wife, daughter or friend. As it’s not readily detected, ovarian cancer can definitely sneak under the radar and it’s important that everyone is aware of the symptoms.” Every day, four Australian women are diagnosed and three women will die from ovarian cancer. The most common reported symptoms are increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating, abdominal or pelvic (lower tummy) pain, feeling full after eating a small amount, needing to urinate often or urgently. All proceeds from the event will go to Ovarian Cancer Australia.

How long have you been a volunteer firefighter and why did you decide to join? I have just joined CFA Narre Warren North Brigade for nearly 12 months. I hoped to be more involved in the community in which I live, learn some skills, and spend my spare time more meaningfully. I am also really impressed and inspired by other members' decades of long services for CFA. What have been some incidents you have attended with the CFA that you will never forget? I have attended motor vehicle accidents, gas fire, car fires etc. Since I am relatively still a newbie, every incident is pretty much a valuable opportunity for me to gain more handson knowledge and experience. What is something people don't know about you? I have been secretly enjoying the Monday-$10discount movie tickets at a cinema close to my uni. I would spend some Monday late afternoons and evenings after uni on my own watching a couple of movies there. What is your most memorable moment? I have made it to my first ever strike team at Grantville bushfire earlier this year under the mentorship of brigade crews and leaders. Where did you grow up as a child? I grew up in Shanghai, and my parents and I moved here to Melbourne when I was 15. What is your favourite movie? Into the Wild (2007) If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would try to work more on issues of men's mental health and family violence. What are you currently studying? I am studying Classics and Linguistics at Melbourne Uni while working as an interpreter. Favourite holiday spot in Australia? The Overland Track in Tasmania that I have just come back from is not bad at all! What's your favourite book? The Hunter, by Julia Leigh.

Unless you have actually been a patient of Andrews you really shouldn't make comments. Andrew helped me for over two years. If the parents didn't want the treatment why take the baby. This is a setup otherwise it wouldn't have been videotaped. Why didn't the parents say stop because Andrew doesn't treat you if you don't want it. Kerryanne Harris: All my children were seen by chiropractors under a week old. Alternate therapies have been around for thousand of years before modern medicine. 70 years ago children were born and hung upside down and slapped on the back without appropriate

training. Chiropractors have trained for many years and then they specialise in woman and children. TOORADIN HISTORY POSTED FOR SALE By Narelle Coulter IN its heyday last century the Tooradin North Post Office was a vital part of the farming community that surrounded it. People popped by the post office to collect their mail, make a phone call on the party line, buy a stamp or collect their daily newspaper. Today remnants of that history are still visible in the sprawling family home that sold this month for $1,175,000 at 70 Langtree Road, Tooradin. Keith Murphy, who still owns part of the original property, has fond memories of growing up there in the 1950s. Langtree Road sits between Tooradin Station Road and Muddy Gates Lane. His parents, Keith Senior and Gladys Murphy, bought the then 100 acre property in 1954. Keith Senior ran the property as a dairy farm and Gladys looked after the post office, which was located in a small room accessed from an alcove at the front of the house. In the 1950s the weatherboard farmhouse was typical of the era with three bedrooms, a kitchen with slow combustion stove and separate lounge room. The toilet was “down the backyard“ where copperhead snakes often lurked. Bees had built hives in the walls of the old house and Keith remembers honey dripping down the walls. The house was called Bundalhon back then, though Keith is unsure of the origin of the name. He recalls being told it meant ’happy home’. As a boy it was Keith’s job to collect the
mail from the nearby train station. “We had to collect the mail at the station daily. Originally when we sent the mail out we had to tie string around the bag and put wax around it and stamp it with a seal,“ he said. “The papers used to come by train too and I’d have to collect those as well.“ Keith remembers getting scolded by his father one day because he sold one of the newspapers to a passenger on a train parked temporarily at Tooradin North. The bloke had called out to him through the train window and offered him “two bob“ for a newspaper. “I got home and was very proud of myself but dad was very angry because I had sold someone’s paper so he had to go and get another one.“ People without home telephones would use the public phone attached to a wall on the outside of the building. Keith remembers the post office call sign - two shorts, a long and a short. “I got in trouble for picking up the phone and listening to converstations.“ In 1963, Gladys Murphy fell ill and could no longer run the post office. Her duties were assumed by a Mrs Carlisle who lived at the station master’s house. Keith Senior sold the property in 1965 for 7500 pounds to Greek brothers Con and George Nelios. They brothers were fishmongers who lived in Gardenvale and used the Tooradin property on weekends. “I remember they held an engagement party there once for their son and it lasted three days. You could hear the music for miles,“ said Keith.

70 Langtree Lane, Tooradin. The Nelios brothers sold the land under separate titles in the 1980s, and in 1988 Keith bought back the house in which he grew up. He renovated it and let it out, but sold it again after a few years because of problems with tenants. “Anyone else would have pulled it down,
but because I grew up there I wanted to preserve it,“ he explained. Keith is elated that the vendors incorporated the old house into their extenisve renovations. “I’m so pleased to see that it has been renovated and its history is still there.“ ● 12412688-RC10-19

Plea for urgent upgrade The fatal accident at the Wellington Road and Berwick Road intersection on Saturday 23 February shows again the dangers of high-volume uncontrolled intersections, according to the Cockatoo 21st Century Roads Action Group (CRAG 21). VicRoads traffic counts for 2016 show 14,500 vehicles per day on Wellington Road on the west side of this intersection, 10,000 vehicles per day on the east side and 4500 vehicles per day using Berwick Road. CRAG 21 member Sue Wales said the group is calling for urgent action to introduce traffic signals with warning lights similar to the Lysterfield Road intersection at the Berwick Road intersection. “The frequency of lesser incidents at the intersection has been an ongoing concern. Sadly, this time the accident has been a fatality,” Ms Wales said. “Consideration also needs to be given to duplicating Wellington Road from Napoleon Road in Rowville to the Berwick Road intersection to relieve congestion and address other
safety issues. “The intersection of Kelletts Road and Wellington Road is also uncontrolled and carries substantial traffic.” The absence of VicRoads funding has resulted in CRAG 21 approaching Member for La Trobe Jason Wood and Labor’s candidate Simon Curtis at the next Federal Election regarding the importance of major improvements on Wellington Road in the hope that some Federal monies can be secured. “Wellington Road is a key arterial for people in Melbourne’s outer east and south-east,” Ms Wales said. “The advocacy efforts of Cardinia Shire Council and Brad Battin MP are appreciated, but MPs for electorates which Wellington Road passes through and the abutting councils also need to take up the challenge. “It is acknowledged that the state has allocated record funds for transport infrastructure in inner and middle Melbourne and growth areas, but the needs in Melbourne’s outer east are equally deserving.”

Nurses tell of volunteering to relieve a world of hurts St John of God Auxiliary was treated to an afternoon of enlightenment as five special nurses gave talks on their experiences as volunteers overseas at an AGM on Monday 18 February. Guest speaker Karen Thompson spoke on her experience aboard the Mercy Ship Australia stationed in Africa as part of a medical team. She said healthcare and the health system is very expensive in Africa so patients come to the Mercy Ship for treatment, some taking days to get there. The small hospital on board the ship caters
for bites, burns, hernias, cataracts etc and serious cases such as burst appendices. Other guest speakers included four delightful nurses, Tess Matthews, Madeline White, Bridget Adams and Natalie Mason. These young nurses volunteered, raising their own expenses to go to Nepal and Kathmandu as part of a program called World Youth in Action. The program itself started 21 years ago to help third world countries get better healthcare and teach better hygiene.

For example, the nurses spoke of rubber gloves being used for one patient and washed out to use on the next patient. The four nurses cared for many patients, also staying in patients' homes to teach homecare. "Tess, Maddie, Bridget and Natalie said their experiences will live with them for a lifetime," St John of God Auxiliary member Anne Crockett said. "They thanked us (St John of God Auxiliary) for our support and contributions to their expenses.

Football president Travis Hamilton and netball president Marg Jones have been working tirelessly behind the scenes, along with the committee, to prepare for their new beginning in AFL Outer East, and describe Toomuc Reserve as having a real "buzz" about it. From an on-field perspective, Lions senior football coach Ash Green is preaching patience as he looks to continue to develop a list he describes as the youngest he's coached. "We've lost a lot of experience and quality with the departures of Stephen Morey and Steve O'Bryan, so that hurts and it's disappointing, but that's just football," he told the News. "But we've recruited well, we're extremely young, and we're super excited with the list we probably have a bit more depth than last year, so we're ready to go. "It's the youngest list I've ever coached - it's exciting, but we've got a lot of work to do in consistency and putting good games together. "We want to be competitive first and foremost, and respected with the way we play our footy - we want to stay in the contest more than last year, but we did play some quality opposition in the Narres, Berwicks and Cranbournes. "We're a bigger town than the other teams we'll be playing, so there will be a bit of pressure on us I would have thought. "We're under no illusions that we'll play some great teams, but we're a work in progress." The Lions - who will play in Division One of the new competition - will have a new look list after specifically targeting former players, "With the salary cap, we've got to be careful with our money - we've managed to get Josh Bradley from Doveton, he's been fantastic. We've targeted guys like Kane Tyrrell from Berwick, we've got Dan Coinu, Jackson Bramich and Nathan Hopwood from Beacy, so they've been good on the training track too," Green said. "We've got Joel Sarlo back to the club too, a former junior best and fairest winner who played at Dingley as well, and Chase Blackwood as well. "So we're trying to get the players that have left the club to come back, so it's a work in progress, and we feel like we're on the right track on that too." Green said that pre-season numbers have been through the roof and his group has shown considerable improvement in certain areas of the game, but conceded that he won't know where his side is placed in the pecking order; such is the unknown of the new competition. "We've had really good numbers over preseason - with the new league, we, like the other clubs, probably don't know what to expect, so we're a side with a challenge ahead of us, and we just can't wait to start," he said. "We want to be a more attacking team, and when you've got a young team, you don't try and work too much on the defensive side of the
game, it's more about playing with a natural flair. "Having an extra year under their belts playing together helps, but we're a young side, a work in progress, and losing players like Morey and O'Bryan does take us back a bit with quality." The Lions' netball set-up is also gearing up for a big season, with the A Grade squad looking to build on an extremely promising 2018 season. The A Grade side will once again be led by esteemed coach Karen Meredith, who has also been reappointed Wilson Storage Southern Saints Division 1 coach in the Victorian Netball League, and was also named a lead coach for the Netball Victoria Talent Academy in the Gippsland region. Meredith told the Gazette that there were almost 80 people at the October trials, and that it's added to the excitement of the squad. "They were the biggest numbers since I've been there, it's given us more depth in our senior teams with the addition of the some of the Under 17s coming up, so that also added to the trial numbers for the seniors," she said. "It's added a lot of competition for the places available." Meredith also believes that the girls are unsure of what to expect as Round 1 nears, but they will instead steer the focuses towards controlling what they can control. "We've got a few clubs from the old SEFNL that we'll be playing, but there is a lot of rumour and innuendo about the clubs and players, but I've found that the best way to get around that is to focus on what we're doing," she said. "I believe we're on the right path - we're developing players, they're coming through and we're getting stronger each year, so from my point of view, we just need to focus on what we're doing, and what happens in the season happens." With spots in the senior sides set to be battled out over the next few weeks, Meredith is confident that the A Grade squad can build on their promising final season in the SEFNL, in which they tested the best sides in the competition on a routine basis, and expects there to be just minor changes to the side. "There is a few that have been the last few years, and we've got some changes as well. We've had a couple of new players come to the club from other SEFNL clubs, so we've got a few ins and outs, but not a complete change," she said. "We haven't announced our teams yet, and we're still looking at combinations." The Lions will kick off their season on Saturday 13 April against Emerald, with senior football to open the season under lights at 6.30pm, while the A Grade girls will play at 6.15pm. They will then play an exciting Anzac Day clash against Officer in Round 2, with both Hamilton and Jones urging the community to get behind the club as they begin their new era pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Pink for the cause By Russell Bennett Resilience, bravery, and the power of positivity - these were three of the themes to emerge from the sixth annual running of the Pakenham Cricket Club's 'Pink Ladies Day' at Toomuc Reserve recently. Once again, the luncheon brought ladies from right across the region together to raise vital funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. This year's running of the event raised an incredible $11,280 - taking the running total so far soaring over the $35,000 mark. Andrea Berkhout was the guest speaker for the event, and spoke bravely and straight from the heart about her own breast cancer fight. she spoke of her journey so far. "Five years was basically my life expectancy, and six years later I'm still here," she said to rapturous applause, adding that she couldn't wait for the birth of her grandchild in a matter of weeks. "In four weeks' time we're looking forward to holding our first grandchild. "We just think very positively, and we've got a lot of support. "The Pakenham Cricket Club is wonderful. We've been coming to this for three years now, and they've been outstanding. "The hardest thing in all of this, I think, was telling my kids ... but we pulled together as a family, and we've got a lot of community support, through things like the Relay for Life as well." Pakenham's Pink Ladies function raises funds each year for the McGrath Foundation, which funds breast care nurses in communities right across Australia. The foundation currently has 120 McGrath Breast Care Nurses who help individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological, and emotional support - for free. More than 67,000 families have been supported since 2005, but more nurses are desperately needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia. Pakenham's event was this year nominated for the Cardinia Shire Council's 'Community Event of the Year' at its annual Australia Day awards.
