Stabbing pain is still felt A public housing tenant remains at his Doveton home despite being recently convicted of a sickening attack on his next-door neighbour’s dog.

Alan Erskine, 54, pleaded guilty to slashing the family dog Mia in her backyard while her owners were out last July.

He had sliced the mild-mannered Staffordshire-Mastiff cross three times to the face and left eyeball, causing a stream of profuse bleeding.

Many of her facial scars have healed but her eye is permanently damaged.

Erskine was sentenced to a community corrections order at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 January.

He was ordered to compensate Mia’s owners for more than $3600 in vet bills to treat her wounds - in $50 fortnightly instalments.

Erskine had argued he had been long frustrated by Mia’s barking. He had forwarded audio recordings of the noise to Casey Council several times, calling it to act.

He rejected the council’s advice to fill out a ‘barking diary’.

However Mia’s owners remain traumatised by the attacker’s close presence.

Gino Nayna said he didn’t feel safe leaving his wife Katherine and their toddler at home by themselves.

Neighbours were set to petition the Department of Health and Human Services to evict Erskine, he said.

Otherwise he and his wife, with a toddler in tow, would sell up and move out from the home they bought in the quiet Doveton court less than a year ago.

“You can stab a dog and just get community service. He’s come into my yard with a knife in his hand,” Mr Nayna said.

“How is he still here?”

The family remains out of pocket while they await Erskine to repay their vet expenses over the next 36 months.

It’s an unjust situation, says Mr Nayna - an X Factor top-six contestant whose singing career was curtailed when his jaw was broken in a king hit at a McDonald’s outlet in St Kilda five years ago.

The culprit has yet to be brought to justice.

He is set to apply for an intervention order against Erskine, who has made intervention orders against Mr Nayna and another neighbour.

Other residents have also told Star News of their ongoing fears, claiming Erskine had reacted angrily to dogs and children playing in the street.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson said it must abide by the Residential Tenancies Act before taking action, such as eviction, against a tenant.

“We understand the concerns raised by the neighbours and would encourage them to work with us to enable us to try and reach a resolution suitable for everyone.”

Erskine declined to comment for the story.

Swimming in spirit

By Jessica Anstice Around 800 staff and students from Nossal High School travelled to Doveton pool for their annual House Swimming Carnival on Tuesday.

Under threatening skies and with a weather forecast that was predicting rain, wind and storms, students dressed in their house colours and cheered on the intrepid competitors who ignored the cold to focus on winning house points for their respective teams.

"House competitions are an important part of the school program and staff and students are passionate about their houses and enthusiastically participate in numerous diverse activities and events throughout the year," Nossal High School principal Roger Page said.

"Points are accumulated and count towards the awarding of the prestigious Page Cup at the annual Speech Night in November."

The House Swimming Carnival is the first event for the year and is the first opportunity for the new Year 9 students to join with their house teams to compete, support or organise the events on the day. The school generates enormous house spirit through such events and this was strongly evident this year when the storms hit soaking supporters and competitors alike and ruining signs and costumes.

Unfortunately the chilling winds and showers persisted so the spectators reluctantly made their sodden return to school to warm up.

Un-phased by the weather the 70 remaining intrepid competitors stayed on to complete their races, supported by some very cold and equally sodden teachers.

"In spite of the weather the event was highly successful, hotly contested, and the spirit and participation of all students was (as always) positive and joyous," Mr Page said.

At the end of the day the winning team was the mighty Phoenix House, throwing down the gauntlet for the other three houses for the forthcoming athletics carnival.

A proposed giant double-sided billboard in Dandenong South has been knocked back by the state's head planning tribunal.

Maple Media had applied to construct a 95-square metre electronic sign - which would be backed by a 86 square metre floodlit sign at 216-244 South Gippsland Highway.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Philip Martin ruled the proposal was an "unacceptable visual impact" on a "sensitive" section of the 80 km/h highway.

The sign with its own solar panels was to feature static images that change every 30 seconds.

It would have been placed in the front corner of a 2.4 hectare site which houses five commercial and industrial buildings up to 10.2 metres tall.

Mr Martin said it was a "plus" for the proposal that the sign was in a commercial 2 zone - more than a kilometre away from the nearest houses.

The negatives were its "very large" size, much taller than nearby landscaping.

Mr Martin said the proposal loomed as close as 0.5 metres from the site's frontage inconsistent with the large setbacks for commercial buildings in the area.

The sign was "visually jarring" with the leafy and sensitive section of highway featuring native trees and "attractive front landscaping" as well as a nearby water retarding basin, he said.

"All in all, it seems fair to say that this would be a very robust and visually imposing structure.

"I have found the particular physical setting here to be fundamentally unsuitable."

At the hearing, Greater Dandenong Council opposed the application.

Old woman robbed of $1000 cash

Wallaby’s short-lived rescue CFA firefighters took the time to help save a baby wallaby while fighting a bushfire - but hopes of its survival were dashed when it was later put down.

Firefighters Hellie Aitken from Hampton Park and Mark Whitmore from Narre Warren North were battling raging bushfires in Grantville when they helped rescue the injured wallaby on Tuesday 5 February.

Once safely caught by Mark, Helen, together with a member of Ambulance Victoria, gave him some much-needed water and food, and cleaned its injured feet.

Hellie said firefighters spotted the wallaby on the side of the road, where his mother was nowhere to be seen.

"We popped him in a pillow case," she said.

"I had to go back out; I would've sat with him all afternoon."

"He was very content. He knew that we wanted to help him.

"We gave it some water and some lettuce," Hellie added. "I would've brought him home."

She said it was a team effort to help the marsupial who appeared to be shock, and "didn't know what was happening."

"His feet were quite badly burnt; his tail was a bit burnt.

"It's sad because they can't fend for themselves; they've got nowhere to go."

A 63-year-old woman has been robbed of $1000 cash and her phone by a preying bagsnatcher who fled in a stolen car in Springvale.

She had been followed by a suspiciousacting male while walking on St John’s Avenue Springvale about 2.45pm on Monday 11 February, Greater Dandenong CIU police say.

As she started to cross the road, the robber ran up behind her and snatched the bag containing her cash and phone from her shoulder.

He fled into a white 2013 Mercedes Benz A2 sedan with four others inside. It drove away along Boonah Street.

The victim was uninjured during the robbery.

The escape vehicle was believed to have been stolen with three other cars during a residential aggravated burglary in Keysborough on Friday 8 February.

Between 4am-5.40am, intruders stole keys from a bowl inside a home’s kitchen on Donnici Drive.

The burglars then entered the garage, stealing three vehicles inside and one vehicle outside.

The other stolen cars were a black 2008 Mercedes Benz sedan, a white 2013 BMW sedan and a grey 2016 Holden Commodore.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on Sunday 10 February in relation to the aggravated burglary.

He was remanded on charges of aggravated burglary and car theft.

Police probe fake letters

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police are investigating fake letters headed with the Greater Dandenong Council logo purporting to introduce ‘sharia’-influenced by-laws.

Greater Dandenong commander Mark Langhorn said the letters had been placed in residents’ letterboxes across the southern suburbs since late last week.

“We want to assure the community that we have consulted with the council and the contents of the letter are absolutely false.”

Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the case.

Inspector Langhorn appealed for recipients to keep the letter in a safe place and carefully take it to a police station.

Police are also seeking relevant CCTV footage.

“Every Victorian has the right to feel safe and secure in the community and in practising their faith, pursuing their values, beliefs and interests,” Inspector Langhorn said.

“We treat all crime seriously, including those that attempt to incite prejudice, racism or discrimination in our community.”

Dated 1 February or “25 Jumma 1404”, the hoax “public notice” announced a list of 10 bylaws applying from 1 April.

They included a ban on serving and consuming alcohol and pork in public, the ban of food and drink in the daytime during Ramadan and females having to cover their hair, arms and legs in public.

It also banned daytime dog walking and public shows of affection, particularly “homosexuality”.

A 12 per cent rate hike for “non-Muslims” was also announced.

The letter stated that the council was proud

of its diversity and that “Muslims now form the dominant group in Dandenong”.

“With this program Dandenong City Council (sic) aims to promote equality, increase sustainability and provide a safe, non-discriminatory environment for everyone.”

On a Facebook post, the council said the “fake” letter contained “offensive and misleading” information and was “most definitely not in-line with the views of Council”.

“We are investigating its source.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, in a Facebook post, said the letter was “designed to create fear and incite racial tensions”.

“It appears to target our Muslim community.

“This is ultimately a cynical (and toxic) attempt to undermine our successful multiculturalism.

“If you stumble across it, file it in the most appropriate place - the bin. #noplaceforracism” In response to the letter, right-wing political group Australian Liberty Alliance posted on Facebook its desire to “stop Islamisation”.

“With over 30 per cent of Dandenong’s population following Islam, Muslims are now the dominant religious group in the outer eastern suburb of Melbourne,” the ALA posted.

“Already in 2015 a council project asked non-Muslims to wear the hijab - as a social experiment.”

Kuranda Seyit, director of Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR), said the letter was “obviously from someone with a sense of humour, albeit in poor taste”.

“A lot of effort has been taken to give the letter an air of authenticity however it’s riddled with so many inconsistencies.

“It’s important to note that the by-laws that were stated in the letter, would not even apply

Police have released images to help investigate an alleged theft from a Keysborough hardware store.

A female took a Ryobi cordless blower kit and a Ryobi cordless hammer drill from the store without attempting to pay about 10.40am on Saturday 2 February, police say.

She reportedly got into a silver vehicle outside. It is believed to be a Holden.

The released CCTV stills show a female that police wish to question about the incident.

Man charged with Subway armed robbery A Dandenong North man has been charged over allegedly holding up a Subway outlet with a handgun on Wednesday 6 February.

The next day, the 22-year-old was arrested while attempting another armed robbery with a knife at a Shell servo in Dandenong, police say.

He was remanded in custody.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the armed robbery a female in Cleeland Street Dandenong on 12 January.

The victim was held up at knifepoint as her bag and other belongings were stolen.

The boy is also being investigated over several other armed robberies in the South East in January and February, Greater Dandenong CIU police say.

He was arrested and remanded on Wednesday 6 February.

He was set to appear at a childrens’ court at a later date.

Ute suspiciously incinerated Police have been called to a suspicious car fire in Glasscocks Road Dandenong South on Thursday 7 February.

The dual-cab utility was found completely destroyed by CFA crews at the site two kilometres west of Western Port Highway about 1.45am.

A regular at Dandenong library, she says it's a place not only to read up on her varied interests and curiosities.

The library has offered her a variety of poetry and art workshops, computer and printing services and been a hub for meeting the like-minded.

"It's something we do by choice, not by obligations.

"We do it for pleasure and personal satisfaction - it's really important."

The Endeavour Hills resident is a rolemodel for what the statewide Libraries Change Lives is all about.

Greater Dandenong Council has joined the

campaign to highlight the benefits of public libraries.

Its Springvale and Dandenong libraries attract more than 1.2 million visitors a year.

More than 900,000 items are borrowed and 150,000 computer sessions booked.

Mayor Roz Blades said libraries were a place to "learn, create and belong".

"Along with free access to computers, iPads, online learning courses, books and DVDs, our libraries also host English language classes, technology classes and creative workshops."

Language and literacy classes are an important service given one in five Greater Dandenong residents have limited fluency in English, she said.

Public Libraries Victoria estimate that for every $1 invested in public libraries, $4.30 in community benefit is generated.

Red Roo bounds to victory

Two teams of supremely talented Red Roo Sports basketballers were unbeaten as they claimed regional championship trophies in Warragul.

The Dandenong-based under-16 and under-19 teams were both undefeated in the Warragul Warriors Basketball Association annual junior tournament on 8-10 February.

David Amum was crowned the under-16s most valuable player award, and Burbeej Wang won the under-19s MVP. Team coach James Kerr, who has bankrolled the club since 2015, said it was reward for hard work.

"Their girlfriend is their basketball," he said.

"Winning is no accident, these young are committed to achieving excellence with discipline."

Their objective was purely to play basketball and win, Mr Kerr said.

"Relentless defence and offensive dominance were the only words to describe the Red Roo's performance over the weekend."

Red Roo Sports' 50 players are based at HOOPS 24/7 training centre in Dandenong South. Apart from Mr Kerr, it operates with "nothing from governments or sponsors".

Mr Kerr said it was hoped to upgrade HOOPS 24/7 to become a "first-class facility" with scoreboards, shot clocks and further airconditioning.

"We'll keep marching on. These kids are worth a bit of effort."

Red Roo's open mens team has been invited to a tournament in Bendigo to ply their skills against Big V sides such as Bendigo, Ringwood and Coburg.

The invitation came soon after the controversial cancellation of the South Sudanese Australian Basketball Association's Summer Slam tournament series.

Lieb Yatta, of Red Roo under 19s, rises to the hoop.

Summer Slam organisers had been unable to stage the 2018 event due to what Basketball Victoria described as "the severity of external restrictions placed on this event".

The restrictions were widely derided as racially-based.

"(Bendigo) thought it was wrong and so invited us to play with them," Mr Kerr said.

"It's a great opportunity. My way to promote our players is to enter in as many tournaments as possible."

ALP welfare pledge

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Federal Labor, if elected to Government this year, has vowed to reverse the stripping of welfare payments from asylum seekers living in the community.

At a forum in Dandenong on 8 February, opposition immigration and border protection spokesman Shayne Neumann announced the commitment.

He slammed the Government's "arbitrary, unjustified and haphazard" cutting of Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) payments.

The cuts are thought to potentially affect up to 2000 asylum seekers in the Dandenong region, entirely stripping them of their $35-aday SRSS payments.

"The Liberals have played politics with the lives of vulnerable people for too long and only Labor will stand up for fairness and treat asylum seekers living in Australia with dignity and humanity."

Mr Neumann pledged to ensure asylum seekers had means-tested access to a range of services including crisis housing, financial assistance, health care and mental health support.

The forum was hosted by the Local Government Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum chaired by Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades.

The taskforce of 25 councils from Victoria and NSW are part of a Back Your Neighbour campaign on the issue.

Cr Blades said she was pleased to hear a "firm commitment to restore the program if Labor wins government".

"Now we need a clear timeframe for action.

"The effect of these cuts is people having no money and support to survive on, causing a level of destitution and homelessness that is completely unacceptable.

Back Your Neighbour campaign manager Daniel Scoullar said "thousands of men, women and children are being put in harm's way" by the "cruel" cuts.

"The Federal Minister for Immigration David Coleman could fix this crisis today, but instead more and more people are having their lifelines cut."

Bruce MP Julian Hill, who attended the forum, said many local organisations and the State Government were stepping in to support them.

"I am increasingly concerned that local organisations are going to be overwhelmed with demand because of Peter Dutton's cruel and heartless cuts."

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said that Labor needed to commit to

a time-frame.

"What was clear from the meeting was we need to get a clear commitment from Mr Neumann to reinstate the SRSS. "He says it's one of his top priorities but he couldn't give a time-frame on that."

The "worst thing" for recipients would be to be kept waiting while a long drawn-out review of the program was underway, he said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs recently told Star News that the SRSS program "is not a social welfare program".

"It is designed to provide short-term, tailored support to those who have demonstrated barriers to resolving their immigration status.

"Individuals on a bridging visa with work rights, and who have the capacity to work, are expected to support themselves while their immigration status is being resolved."

City of Greater Dandenong has endorsed a multi-council campaign to fight impending federal cuts to kindergarten funding.

Cr Matthew Kirwan, who raised the motion, said it's feared that parents will be charged an extra $2000 if the Federal Government doesn't continue its funding after 2019.

Otherwise, state and local governments would have to fund the shortfall.

As part of the I Love Kinder campaign, the councils will advocate for the Federal Government to continue funding of five hours a week of four-year-old kindergarten services for each student.

Currently, the State Government funds 10 hours a week, making a total of 15 subsidised hours under a national agreement between the federal, state and territory governments.

In May, the Federal Government pulled out of the agreement. The Opposition has pledged to restore the agreement, if elected.

Cr Kirwan said it was essential that children in Greater Dandenong were able to attend 15 hours of kindergarten for the "best possible start to life".

"In a multicultural municipality with significant levels of disadvantage, Greater Dandenong families rely on quality, well-funded, public kindergarten services."

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 20 February 1919 A Welcome Rainfall After the long dry spell experienced for weeks past - and the finish on Saturday when the temperature registered 106 in the shade - the rainfall which started on Monday morning proved most welcome. The rain which was badly needed in the district continued throughout Monday and by Tuesday morning 318 points had been registered at Dandenong Post Office What with the influenza epidemic and the extremely sultry weather, during the past 3 weeks people's nerves had become somewhat "frayed".

Council divided on care tender

Unfair fines hit

Greater Dandenong councillors are said to be split on whether to offer a contract for its homecare services to a private operator whose bid is about $1.6 million cheaper than the in-house team. The matter was discussed in a closed meeting on Friday in which the council will vote on the matter tonight. Glad Pty Ltd (trading as Silver Circle) has put in a tender to run Home and Community Care (HACC) services for frail aged residents in Greater Dandenong. It estimates it would cost about $6.6 million for three years. The in-house team's bid was about $8.2 million.

Loraine Doran parked on level one in the clow street car park shortly after 9am on 4 December. "I was there under an hour, then left the car park" she said. Ms Doran retuned to the car park about 3pm to pick up her daughter, parking on level one. Returning to her vehicle she found a $66 Traffic Monitoring Services (TMS) fine for failing to comply with the five hour parking restriction. She emailed TMS an objection to the fine complete with statutory declaration. "The onus was on me. Luckily I could prove where I was." Ms Doran said parking checks needed to include the vehicles precise positon, not just which level it was parked on.

Sixty minutes of terror

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two home invaders have been jailed over a terrifying 60-minute rampage while wielding an axe in a Hallam residence.

Samuel Jackson, 23, threatened to chop off a male resident's foot and his fingers as well as to rape his petrified wife in front of him.

He was assisted by Lachlan Hole, 19, who was armed with a bike fork during the ransacking in the early hours of 12 March 2018.

In sentencing on 14 February, County Court of Victoria judge Patricia Riddell said they had performed one of the most serious examples of a home invasion, punishable by up to 25 years' jail.

Earlier that night, the pair - wired on booze and Xanax tablets - had been turned away from Dandenong railway station by PSOs due to their intoxication.

They broke into a van parked outside an air-con store in Hallam, tried to steal it and

then Hole set it alight.

At 2.15am, Jackson then smashed three windows and woke a male occupant in a failed attempt to break into another Hallam home.

Later on, they broke into the home-invasion address and walked in on a male occupant shaving in the bathroom.

The resident faced Jackson wearing a hoodie, a handkerchief over his face and holding an axe. His co-offender also wore a hoodie and held a bike fork.

Jackson, who was regarded as the "leader" of the pair, then forced entry into a husband and wife's bedroom.

Among the stolen goods were jewellery, wallets and the husband's $1400 takings for the day.

Jackson smashed a mobile phone and two laptops after the residents were unable to give passwords or reset the devices.

After a series of violent threats, the husband and wife escaped the house. They found po-

lice attending the nearby aggravated burglary committed by Jackson.

Jackson and Hole, who had met through mutual friends only a few days earlier, were arrested at the scene.

Jackson was assessed not to be in a fit state for a police interview.

Hole claimed he could barely remember anything, denied taking alcohol or drugs, denied stealing anything and denied knowing Jackson.

In their victim impact statements, the householders described their ongoing terror, sleeplessness and to no longer feeling safe in their homes.

The wife described being scared for her and her husband's life. "I'm not the person I was," the previously "happy" and sociable victim stated.

The husband thinks over what could have happened that night.

"I have nowhere to relax. My whole life has changed."

Judge Riddell took into account Jackson's abusive childhood under a violent, drunken father, his youthfulness and efforts to reform himself while in custody.

At the time of the home invasion he had been on bail for family violence, dishonesty and burglary offences.

Hole, who grew up in Pakenham and Kooweerup, had a "short and appalling" criminal history, Judge Riddell noted.

He was a traumatised bystander when James Gargasoulas murderously drove down Bourke Street's footpath in 2017, and was one of the youngest prisoners while held in adult remand.

He had demonstrated remorse and insight into the victim's plights.

Jackson was jailed for up to six years, three months with a non-parole period of four years.

Hole was sentenced to three years' detention in a youth facility.

Both had already served 339 days in presentence detention.

‘Red-shirt’ MPs to go free

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Sixteen Labor MPs investigated as part of the 'Red Shirts Scandal' will not be charged after they refused to be interviewed by Victoria Police .

At a media event on 14 February, Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton, of Victoria Police, said there was insufficient evidence to charge the MPs and the electorate officers with fraud and deception offences.

Police could not establish a required intent, dishonesty and knowledge, Dep Comm Patton

said.The MPs had signed off on time-sheets relating to 18 electorate officers undergoing a party-political campaign field training week in March 2014, ahead of the state election.

The 16 investigated MPs included SouthEast based current and past Ministers Adem Somyurek, Gavin Jennings and John Pandzopoulos as well as former MP Lee Tarlamis.

Others were Gayle Tierney, Johan Scheffer, Candy Broad, Joe Helper, Anthony Carbines, Lily D'Ambrosio, Nazih El-Asmar, John Eren, Shaun Leane, Marcia Thomson, Brian Tee and

Jenny Mikakos.

However, two unnamed men - neither current MPs or field organisers - alleged to have masterminded the scheme will be further investigated.

Dep Comm Patton said that police intended to "criminally interview" the pair.

They will be investigated over offences such as a conspiracy to defraud.

He expected the investigation to "progress quite quickly".

He noted that Premier Daniel Andrews,

Deputy Premier James Merlino nor Police Minister Lisa Neville were not among the 16 MPs. Police had first investigated the claims in 2015 as part of Operation Ocotillo.

Last year, a State Ombudsman report had found the Labor Party used $388,000 of taxpayer funds to pay electorate officers for field campaign work.

The latest police investigation centred on just the training week in March 2014 because "there was no ambiguity of the roles performed" by electorate officers.

Bulldozers move in on ‘Melbourne’s worst’ bomb site

By Brendan Rees A derelict Hampton Park Food Market labelled an "eyesore" and "Melbourne worst" will be bulldozed after Casey council approved a demolition application on Tuesday 11 February.

Council is now assessing a planning application for a multi-use development including 117 apartments, shops and offices at the Hallam Road site.

"The application has also been referred to VicRoads and Melbourne Water for their approval," Casey manager of statutory planning and building services Duncan Turner said.

When Star News visited this week windows temporary fencing was up with windows smashed, walls covered in graffiti, and damaged chairs and tables strewn across the front.

Council is also seeking extra powers to be able to issue warnings and harsher penalties to "recalcitrant owners" "Council has asked that it be entitled to issue penalties in keeping with the community risk that these properties pose, temporarily confiscate the properties and undertake the remedial work necessary," Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon said.

"Should re-offending occur, we've asked that Council can undertake further remedial works, with the penalties to double on each occasion to the same property."

Currently the council's only legal avenue to act against the owner of the commercial premises is issuing a $2,000 fine for unsightly premises.

Councillor Wayne Smith said council was "working hard to investigate what methods Council can take to help rectify the situation."

Casey Resident and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the site was an "eyesore" and in effect "a waste land."

"It wouldn't take much to break in and gets squatters in there and that wouldn't be good," he said.

"It would be in the council's interests to listen to any submissions from developers."

Mr Talvik said there was "any number of things" the site could be turned into including a plaza, offices, open space garden, eateries or leisure centre.

Hampton Park Progress Association spokeswoman Erica Maliki said the site was "not fair on the community."

Pizzas built on ‘white gold’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Pizza dough recipes are often a close-guarded secret.

Fathers don't even hand down recipes to their sons, says 'Kappa' - the head chef and coowner of Oro Bianco, Dandenong's latest Italian fine-dining mecca.

As a child apprentice, he was able to winkle out a few "bits and pieces" from masters in kitchens back in Italy.

"As a kid, you are under-estimated," he says.

"I worked two years for free. But by the time I was 15 I was getting paid more than my dad."

He's rejected offers of up to $6000 for his dough recipe.

Six years ago, Kappa settled in Melbourne with wife Megan Harper.

He arrived in one of the world's best food

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL scenes, he says.

"I'm finding Dandenong is beautiful.

There's a lot of potential."

It's a big deal to be a pizza maker in Italy, and the value of a fine-tuned dough is plain to see at Oro Bianco.

The restaurant name literally means 'white gold'.

Kappa says much of the flour dough is water and air, with a small amount of yeast.

It ferments quickly in 24 hours, is less filling than other doughs and forms a bubbly base for the luscious toppings.

"It's more than what you put in it," he says as he flings and stretches a ball of dough into a thin circular base.

"It's how you work it."

It cooks in about a minute or so in the 400-degree heat of the customised wood-fire oven.

Oro Bianco is a blend of simplicity, authenticity with high dining. It uses herbs picked fresh from its own pots on Lonsdale Street.

Much of the other ingredients are imported from Italy such as the Caputo flour from Naples and San Daniele prosciutto that Kappa says is one of the world's best.

The prosciutto is generously bunched on the Caprese pizza - a sweet, winning blend of balsamic glaze and bocconcini with a burst of

red and yellow cherry tomatoes and rocket.

There's terrific inventiveness - a Silence of the Lambs pizza of pulled lamb, tzatziki, eggplant and the sweet acid of pomegranate.

Others feature pork belly, chorizo, and a dense range of fresh vegies and cheeses.

There's also the traditional margherita pizza and the option to choose your own ingredients.

The glowing 1.8 metre oven is the perfect size for a new range of metre-long pizzas - as well as the wood-fired lasagne, gnocchi and tender beef-veal meatballs.

Look out also for the spectacularly decorative Italian donuts with either Nutella, white chocolate and caramel sauces.

Highlights on the breakfast menu from 7am are the fresh muffins, and bacon and eggs in buns.

The objects of curiosity In a whirr of costumes and movement, Dandenong Primary School students are hitting the big stage as part of an international art exhibition.

The students, with artist-educator Kym Maxwell, are taking on the roles of frogs, ravens, trees and a scientist for a live performance at the Shapes of Knowledge event at Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA).

Their performance Objects of Longing stems from months of workshops.

Since Term 3 2018, the students have explored their personal collecting of items during playtime, visited behind the scenes at MUMA as well as becoming curators at their own temporary Museum of Anticipation.

Their live theatre performance was formed as a result.

Shapes of Knowledge features eight projects from artists and groups from across the world, including Asia Art Achive (Hong Kong), A Centre for Everything (Australia), Chimurenga (South Africa) and Annette Kraus (The Netherlands).

Objects of Longing will be performed at MUMA on Saturday 23 February.

Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system, including the spine.

The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years; however, significant growth in this speciality has required the establishment of a dedicated unit.

The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019.

The fourth-floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s South East.

The unit has the capacity for 32 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. Tennis ace’s gym visit A Hallam high-performance gym that attracts professional athletes such as tennis rising ace Destanee Aiava is opening its doors for a free family day.

The Institute of Athletic Performance will host live music, push-up competitions, a sparring exhibition, sausage sizzle, kickboxing and boxing classes, a strength and conditioning class and a jumping castle.

Nutritionist Michelle Reeves will be on hand for advice.

Depending on her training commitments, Aiava - a local who played impressively at the Brisbane and Australian open tournaments this summer - is hoped to be there for autographs.

After completing Year 12 last year, the 19-year-old Aiava is hitting the WTA tennis circuit this year.

She trains at the Hallam gym, which is run by her father Mark - an elite athlete across four sports in his own right.

Mark has represented New Zealand in athletics, tae kwon do, powerlifting and rugby.

At the gym, he works with VFL footballers, Bundesliga soccer players and elite basketballers, as well as offering free self-defence sessions.

He says his aim is to empower the community, especially women and young adults, in what can be an "intimidating world".

"Our ethnicity is wide and diverse and we have an even male to female ratio, as well as great age diversity."

"It is all still sinking in," says lead singer Nick Wolfe.

"A Golden Guitar win was high up on the bucket list we wrote up as a group way back before Australia's Got Talent.

"To win four in one night was surreal to all three of us."

riors" playing the pubs and party scene around Tasmania.

They rose to national prominence when they ran second at Australia's Got Talent, then performed regularly live with Lee Kernaghan.

From 22 to 24 February the island is set to launch the new three-race world supers format at the Yamaha Finance round.

Just to spice up the life of the WorldSBK boys, organisers have added a 10-lap Sunday midday sprint, adding to the traditional 2x22 lap races on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.

The three battles will be a highlight of the 13-strong production race agenda on the 4.445km island circuit. World superbikes will be backed by world supersport and the launch of the 2019 national championships for Australian superbike, supersport and supersport 300.

The world superbike sprint will deliver an exciting new frontier for teams, racers and spectators. Riders will go flat out from start to finish, guaranteeing bar-banging action of the highest order.

Reigning world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) isn’t afraid of the argy-bargy and he’ll be one of the riders pushing hard at the front. Alongside him will be riders such as WorldSBK rookie Alvaro Bautista (Ducati), Chaz Davies (Ducati), Tom Sykes (BMW), Leon Haslam (Kawasaki), Marco Melandri (Yamaha), Michael van der Mark (Yamaha), Alex Lowes (Yamaha and Leon Camier (Honda).

Aussie superbike champion Troy Herfoss (Honda) will also be competing as a wildcard and is eyeing off some big international scalps.

Burra is bound to excite

By Nick Creely Keysborough coach Matt Ferguson acknowledges that one quarter of footy cost his side a chance at playing in the 2018 SFNL Division 2 grand final.

As his side continues to grow, mature and learn, he hopes that the pain of losing two consecutive preliminary finals will be the making of his group.

As the Burra gears up for its Round 1 clash with Murrumbeena on 6 April, Ferguson said the key to his side improving themselves does not simply lie with pure ability or star power, but with the mindset that it will maintain the same intensity in every game, from early April, until finals time in August and September.

"It's about being switched on 100 per cent of the time - we won 10 of the 12 quarters in finals, but we had just about our worst quarter in the prelim (against eventual premiers Highett), being 39 points down at quarter time," he said.

"It's just about making sure we are mentally prepared for every game, and making sure we're up for every week - particularly, if you look at the competition, with Chelsea Heights, Springvale Districts and Heatherton coming in, there are no easy games.

"We have to ensure we are mentally strong, and play the brand of footy we can play - if we stay the same we're going to go backwards, and if we improve every area, the results will look after itself."

From a playing list perspective, Ferguson named his leadership group for this season last week, with Michael Downie named as senior captain, and Geoff Humphreys, Ryan Goodes, Jarryd Cipressi and Damian Collins making up a strong five-man group.

He said that after a long process, it was pleasing to have narrowed it down to five players after a bunch of names put their hand up.

"These guys have set the tone for the preseason, and I like to do the leadership group after Christmas and give the guys an opportunity to put their hand up," he said.

"The three guys that have previously been in it speak for themselves (Geoff Humphreys, Ryan Goodes and Michael Downie), Damian Collins has really come on in his leadership, and the example he sets - he's come from playing all of his footy at Narre Warren, and you can just tell by the way he goes about things.

"He'll do anything to improve himself, and that's the sort of example we want."

The Burra has brought back a host of names to the club this season, with Richard Minney, Simon Sloss and Jack McKinney all slotting in seamlessly, but the return of former senior club champion Anthony Brannan has Ferguson particularly ecstatic.

Picture: KEYSBOROUGH FNC FACEBOOK he's obviously been coaching at St John's, and I kept pestering him I guess, and he just decided he wanted to finish his footy at Keysy - his leadership already has shown, he's been amazing, and he's brought some mates down with him as well which has been good," he said.

"He'll be really valuable for us - we had a pretty young defence last year, and him coming back, will be invaluable."

Another big name to put pen to paper is former state league midfielder Scott Terrens, but Ferguson said the club will need to be patient with the star recruit.

"He hasn't played for the last two years, he actually broke his leg - he was signed at the Pines, but broke his leg, and he's had a couple years off," he said.

"He'll be a slow build, with his running and so forth, he's still got a bit of pain - we're thinking with him, we'll see the best in the second half of the year.

"Hopefully he's there in Round 1, but we're prepared to play the long game with him."

Ferguson's side were one of the great attacking threats of the competition last year, with Chris Bryan (80), Matthew Carnelley (48)

and Cory Hargreaves (30) combining for a whopping 158 goals between them, and hopes that his side can build on that with the competition's new rules.

"There's been a bit of tinkering, and we have to because of the new rules coming in, so I guess from our point of view, we've always been an attacking side, we move it quickly and when you've got key forwards like we do, that's the way we want to play," he said.

"We'll try and go even further with that with the new rules, the kick in rules and the six-sixsix, they should really suit our style of play, but every club will be looking at how to best exploit the new rules."

But ensuring that his side can remain fit and healthy is one of the big priorities for the club this season, with Ferguson believing the group is as well placed as he can recall.

"Our pre-season's been the best in terms of preparation since I've been at the club, so we've got a really healthy list, which is something I can't say we've had in the last five years," he said.

"I think that can hold us in good stead, you can only control so much, but with a bit of luck, we can reduce the soft tissue injuries, so

that's a big area for us."

In other massive news around the club, highly talented star Riet Pal - with only three seasons of footy behind him - has gained a spot on Collingwood's VFL list for 2019, with Ferguson praising the talented youngster for his rapid rise.

"It's an amazing story, he come down with a mate at pre-season (in 2017) - we're a really welcoming club and didn't really have any expectations about what he could do, and the first night he trained, we were like 'wow, what have we got here?'" he said.

"The ability is there, but it's more his attitude, it's second to none - he's a really smart kid, and the world's his oyster.

"I've told him that he shouldn't have any limits on where he can go with his footy, because he'll only get better - every session, every game and in two years of footy, it's pretty remarkable.

"I hope he plays as much VFL footy as possible, but he'll be great for us when available - I think he can be a very good VFL footballer, and potentially further than that."

Talent rising through the ranks at Dandy

By Hayley Wildes There's no doubt that Dandenong Basketball continues to go from strength to strength. With massive participation numbers, coupled with great pathways for elite-level talent, Dandenong Basketball is absolutely booming.

Fans need not look any further than the recent announcement of the Under-18 Victoria Metro squads. Both the men's and women's teams have a strong Dandenong flavour and they will all be doing their best being home the gold for Victoria.

In the Under-18 men's team there are five players in the squad and a further two who are emergencies, while in the women's squad, there are two representatives and two emergencies.

Dandenong's men's director of athlete and coaching development, Darren Perry, knows first-hand the strength and depth of talent coming through the ranks.

"Part of that role is to know what's coming and see what young players are trying to breakthrough and provide as much opportunity for those guys as we can," Perry said.

"It's great to see at quite a few of the age levels that we've got players representing Victoria, some are representing Australia and were 22 STAR JOURNAL

excited about that pathway that players are able to achieve good things at Dandenong."

Perry will be coaching the Under-18 Victoria Metro men's squad when they head to Townsville in April, for what will be his fourth year in charge. He spoke about the talent at Dandenong and the work those who made squads have put in.

"There are more representatives than usual," he said.

"Over the journey we've had representatives in each of the teams that I've coached, except for last year though.

"Three of the Dandenong boys were emergencies last year, so they did well as bottomage players to still get into the program but missed selection for the team.

"The three guys who were in the emergency ranks last year have managed to push their way into the squad this year."

Being able to take the disappointment of not being selected and coming back bigger and better the next year is the type of response Perry loves to see.

"Sometimes guys don't make that jump or that improvement and it's a great result for Dandenong basketball to have that many players involved."

When asked who Dandenong followers should keep an eye on, Perry didn't single out anyone in particular, but knows each of the players who step on the hardwood will compete and give their all.

"The players from the club should all do well," Perry said.

"I think getting into those teams and being able to represent and play in a national championships means that these guys and girls are on a good path to head towards things not just this year, but past this year.

"It's a good tournament to play in to get noticed and to get exposure - colleges in the States do take notice of players who do play at these championships, so it's a good stepping stone."

The Dandenong players selected for the Under-18 Victoria Metro men's squad are: Mason Perry, Leyi Adebayo, Marcus Windhager, Zac Taylor, Riley Simmons and emergencies Jyelin Moli and Harrison Bowater. For the Under-18 Victoria Metro Women's squad there is Leia Hanafin, Emily Sewell and emergencies Hannah Rapp and Hailey Merrigan.

A testing chase for Dandy

A rocky start to NPL season for Thunder

By Nick Creely Despite the excitement and anticipation of the start of the season, the Dandenong Thunder was handed a stern lesson in the opening round of the NPL on Saturday night.

In the eventual 0-4 loss at George Andrews, Hume City played with too much intensity for the home side to deal with.

It took a rapid start by City to set the tone for the match, with Mitch Cooper capitalizing on a corner in the 10th minute to give the visitors the opening goal of the night.

Moments later, Cooper made a mess of the Thunder’s defence to slip through unattended and slam another into the back of the net, and with very little possession or control, the home side were losing any grip on the contest.

City’s high pressure game resulted in them controlling the tempo. The Thunder was trying to create chances, but couldn’t quite find an opening.

Some near misses early in the second half spelt immediate danger signs for the Thunder, before Brown once again made the most of his chances to kick his second in the 51st minute, sealing the match with plenty of time left to play.

That intensity that brought about the early onslaught never wavered until the final whistle blew, with City getting off to the brightest start possible to the season.

Needing a quick response, the Thunder take on Kingston City FC on Monday 25 February at Grange Reserve.

Dandenong City, meanwhile, also fell in its first game of the NPL season, going down 1-4 to Avondale FC at Frank Holohan on Friday night. City plays South Melbourne FC at Lakeside Stadium on Friday as the side looks to bounce back.

In NPL2 East, Springvale White Eagles drew 2-2 after a late equalizer to get off to a solid start to their season.

It was a day when runs flowed at an alarming rate across the competition.

And Dandenong wasn’t spared in its Victorian Premier Clash with an underperforming Footscray side at Shepley Oval on Saturday.

Remarkably, the Dogs sit second last on the table despite some of the class within their side, but have made the most of an opportunity to blood some youngsters.

But they sent a telling reminder that they are, on their day, as dangerous as any side in the competition, sending the ball to all parts against a Panthers side that welcomed back none other than James Pattinson to the fold.

With the fast bowler returning from the side strain that ended his Big Bash season with the Brisbane Heat, champion all-rounder James Nanopoulos playing his 200th first XI match, as well as the always special Pink Stumps Day, there was every reason to be confident after sending the Dogs in.

Nanopoulos - who had arguably his finest season at the club last season in what was a premiership year - continues to build an almighty legacy at Shepley Oval, and is now up to 25 wickets along with his 387 runs for the season.

Pattinson took the new ball and bowled well in his first spell, bowling three overs, but the Dogs were looking comfortable on a superb batting pitch. He finished with 0/33 from 10 overs.

Matt Underwood (41) and Ash Armstrong (28) got the visitors off to a strong start, crashing 68 runs for the first wicket, before seamer Peter Cassidy (4/73) picked up a couple of wickets to peg the score back to 2/80.

But gun pair Dean Russ (91), and skipper Dylan Kight (98) launched - particularly in the second session - combining for a sublime 131run partnership for the third wicket, sending
