William Aicher was the first Mount Evelyn man to enlist, on 17 August 1914, and the first killed, in Cape Helles on 8 May 1915. Mount Evelyn's Private Horace Allen was the first local soldier to be hospitalised. He was admitted to hospital in Egypt suffering from synovitis of the right knee on 3 January 1915.
