His life for others

Lee Tarlamis.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate.

His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June.

The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said.

“I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement.

“It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people.

“It’s a view that I formed very early on.”

Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17.

“The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

throughout those two years,” he said.

“It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me.

“That’s why I got involved in the local community.”

Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre.

“The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.”

There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer.

“That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said.

“That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.”

He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014.

“That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said.

Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings.

The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up.

The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old.

He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands.

Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business.

“I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said.

“I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that.

“I really enjoyed the community stuff.

“Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

A Dandenong employment service is using plastic waste to make prosthetic hands for amputees.

Envision, a not-for-profit charity that provides support to long-term and disadvantaged job-seekers, is delivering the Envision hands project which turns recycled plastic bottle tops into prosthetic hands for children in developing countries.

To give them a helping hand, the Coca-Cola Foundation announced Envision would share $1.5 million in funding from Coca-Cola to support its Envision Hands upcycling project.

"We're thrilled to be able to give back to the local communities we serve through the global Coca-Cola Foundation," Coca-Cola spokeswoman Sarah Prestwood said.

Using 3D printers to create the prosthetic hands for those in need, Envision will train and support disadvantaged job seekers to help make the devices on-site.The funding will enable the collection of bottle tops, basic recycling processes and the design, creation and distribution of the prosthetic hands.

Director of Envision Employment Services Sean Teer said his team decided to take action "when we realised we might be able to turn those tops into something really beneficial."

"We saw that plastic bottle tops were not being recycled and going into landfill," he said.

"We now are collecting tops from around Melbourne and Victoria and sites like our Dandenong site will be involved in turning those tops into hands/arms and also many other useful plastic recycled items.

"This will also involve training long term unemployed in the latest 3D technology, he said, adding the project aimed to make 100 prosthetic hands for children.

"Envision is putting together a major fundraising campaign to now put all the elements of the project together including programs at schools and in the communities and donations will be sought to support this great environmental and humanitarian project," Mr Teer said

Nursery faces road threat

By Brendan Rees The owner of a family-run nursery in Hampton Park fears the possibility of closing his doors if a major roads authority does not play fair.

The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade - which will add an extra lane in each direction between Ormond Road and South Gippsland Highway - will involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of Diacos' Family Discount and Garden Rock Supplies.

Anthony Diaco, who manages the business with his father Vince, spoke to Star News last year with his concern about a right-hand turn

into his business being removed as part of the roadworks.

He said his business, which depended on 400-600 deliveries a week, would be inconvenienced by having to conduct de-tours.

Mr Diaco says he's tried "to come up with a scenario" with Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) which have only been "knocked on the head straight away."

"There's no dialogue anymore," he added.

Adding to his frustration is the speed limit on Hallam Road will be increased from 60km/h to 80km/h.

"It's going to make this road very unsafe,"

Mr Diaco said. "We're doing a lot of deliveries; we want to make it safe."

According to MRPA, improving safety was a key priority for the project as 22 crashes on Hallam Road were recorded since 2012.

"The newly upgraded road environment along with high usage by heavy vehicles and limited entry and exit points along this route warrant a revised speed limit," an MRPA statement said.

Lights will also be installed at the access to the SUEZ Resource Recovery Centre which will include a dedicated turning lane to separate trucks from cars on Hallam Road.

"There's no way I would've invested this money, I would've relocated because access it's very important for this business," Mr Diaco said.

Mr Diaco added he does not want compensation: "It takes so long to get it, it's a process and then you've got to spend more money to get it. It's not that straight forward."

MRPA program director Brendan Pauwels said the project would improve safety for the "thousands of people that travel along Hallam Road or the South Gippsland Highway every day."

Carpenter convicted for illegal building work A carpenter has been convicted and fined $5000 by the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for seven breaches of the Building Act and Domestic Building Contracts Act. Chameoeun Soun, of Hammerhead Carpentry and Design, was hired by a property owner in October 2015 to carry out $7000 worth of renovation work in Cranbourne. At the time, projects valued at more than $5000 required the builder and owner to enter into a major domestic building contract, and could only be entered by a registered builder. Mr Soun has never been registered with the Victorian Building Authority.

Mr Soun failed to provide the property owner with a formal contract and received a deposit greater than 10 per cent of the contract price before commencing work, breaching the Domestic Building Contracts Act. In November 2015, the property owner hired Mr Soun to build a laundry, which Mr Soun worked on without obtaining the required building permit. The owner also hired Mr Soun to build a carport valued at $6000, and again did not enter a formal contract for this additional work.

In February 2016, Mr Soun stopped working on the property, and left the work unfinished.

When interviewed by the VBA, Mr Soun said he was unaware he could not enter into

a building contract valued at more than $5000 without being a registered builder. He also said he didn’t know a permit was necessary for the laundry work.

He was scheduled to appear in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 January 2019, but did not attend or appoint legal representation. The matter proceeded in Mr Soun’s absence. The Court convicted Mr Soun and fined him a total of $5000 plus costs.

The VBA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, John Thompson, said anyone carrying out building work needs to know their legal obligations regarding building contracts and permits.

“The regulations for carrying out building work are clearly stated in the Building Act and Domestic Building Contracts Act,” Mr Thompson said. “These laws are designed to protect property owners and maintain proper standards in the building industry.

“This case is a good reminder that home owners should always check whether their builder is registered before entering into a contract.”

Home owners can visit vba.vic.gov.au/find to check the registration of their builder.

The threshold for major domestic building projects was raised from $5000 to $10,000 in August 2017.

Police hit the streets

Operation Footprint will target anti social behaviour and provide improved public perception and reassurance for the Springvale and Noble Park area.

Springvale Police Acting Sergeant Russell Bratton said officers would also be visible around other community locations with related tasking such as skate parks, Springers Leisure Centre, and railway stations.

"On Monday 11 February, I will be heading out on foot with a crew and we will be using Eyewatch media to broadcast the operation," he said.

A gun-toting bandit's Dandenong crime spree has been thwarted by police.

The 22-year-old man raided two stores in Dandenong over 24 hours, threatening attendants and stealing cash.

In his first alleged robbery on Wednesday night, the offender - armed with a gun - held up a fast food outlet on the Princes Highway.

He fled with a small amount of cash.

The same man, instead brandishing a knife, attended a service station on Cheltenham Road on Thursday.

Over the limit Highway Patrol members detected a Suzuki TL1000 motorcycle travelling at 123km/h in the 80km/h zone of Princes Highway in Springvale on Saturday February 2.

The 44 year old driver from Springvale was issued a penalty notice of $685.

His licence has been suspended for six months.

Labor promises hospital upgrade The Federal Opposition has promised to improve health care for the people of Melbourne's south by investing in urgent upgrades to Dandenong Hospital.

Labor's $14.5 million redevelopment of the hospital's outdated outpatient and day treatment facilities will deliver better quality maternity, oncology, trauma, psychiatric and other specialist services for the people of this community.

Shadow Minister for Health and Medicare Catherine King visited Dandenong Hospital on Monday 4 February to make the announcement.

This commitment is part of Labor's Fair Go Action Plan to protect Medicare and fix our hospitals.

"It will mean Dandenong Hospital will be able to meet the needs of the area's diverse and

rapidly growing population," Ms King said.

"That means more local residents will receive better and more timely care closer to home - rather than joining long waiting lists or travelling long distances.

"The redevelopment will also will also allow for an extra 20,000 outpatient appointments a year; deliver an expanded range of specialist service types; and improve infection control," she added.

The refurbishment will also create new local jobs.

"Dandenong is one of Australia's most culturally diverse communities, with extensive Aboriginal, refugee and migrant communities relying heavily on Dandenong Hospital for their complex health care needs," Ms King said.

Ms King said this investment would also

help ensure a culturally appropriate environment for patients and their loved ones.

"Labor believes Australians should get the best quality health care whenever they need it - no matter if you live in a rich suburb or a disadvantaged one; a safe seat or a marginal one.

"The Liberals on the other hand just cut and cut and cut from health. As Treasurer, Scott Morrison cut from health and hospitals in every Budget he authored," she said.

"His government has cut $23.47 million from the Monash Local Health Network under the current 2017 to 2020 funding agreement.

"That's equivalent to 57,000 outpatient visits or 35,000 emergency department visits."

Labor promises to reverse the Liberal cuts with their $2.8 billion Better Hospitals Fund, which we will use to fund projects like this one.

Drug drivers caught due to rego lapse Just after 7pm on Friday February 1, members from Casey Highway Patrol intercepted a Ford Falcon ute on Hallam South in Hallam after the registration was flagging as expired.

Police spoke to the 48 year old driver from Melton South who was requested to under an oral fluid test which returned a positive result.

He will receive a summons to attend court

in relation to using an unregistered motor vehicle and drug driving.

Less than an hour later the same police unit intercepted a Mitsubishi Lancer on Princes Highway, Eumemmerring.

The 46 year old driver from Dandenong North was the holder of a learner’s permit that had previously been cancelled and disquali-

fied for drink driving.

The driver returned a negative breath test on this occasion but his oral fluid test returned a positive result.

He will also be summonsed to attend court in relation to charges of driving while unlicensed and drug driving.

Probe on petrol theft Springvale Police are investigating a theft that occurred at a service station in Keysborough South on 31 January.

Police believe that at approximately 7:45am a stolen Holden Commodore entered the Chapel Road service station.

The vehicle had previously been stolen from Hampton Park on 25 January.

Police allege that the driver got and filled the car with fuel before driving off without making an attempt to pay.

The driver is described at Caucasian, aged in his early 30’s and approximately 175cm tall.

Police have released CCTV still images of a man and vehicle that they believe may assist with the investigation.

Volunteer is honoured Local disability support agency The Bridge has lots to celebrate.

One of its valued volunteers, Trevor Williams, was a finalist in the Casey Council Australia Day Awards Senior Citizen category.

Mr Williams was nominated for his regular volunteer work at The Bridge, on Webb Street in Narre Warren, for the past five years.

The Bridge is well known and respected throughout Dandenong and Casey as a disability support agency of choice for many local individuals and families.

Mr Williams received his certificate from Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon.

"Trevor had a great day, and so did I. We took lots of photos. Trev was pretty chuffed," The Bridge service coordinator Catherine

Dunstan said.

Mr Williams is multi-skilled, warmly supporting adult participants with disabilities to achieve their goals, and also assisting Santa at The Bridge's recent celebration.

The Bridge welcomes new volunteers as activity assistants at its services in Dandenong, Noble Park, Narre Warren, Berwick and Cranbourne.

Participant numbers are growing with the roll-out of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) in local suburbs.

5 years ago 10 February 2014 New bin roll-out New bins are on their way to Greater Dandenong Streets - and the smaller the bin the lower the cost. The council last week launched the Great Bin swap campaign, designed to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Battered by the storm A big clean-up was undertaken after wild storms lashed across Greater Dandenong, bringing down trees and cutting off power to homes on Wednesday evening 30 January.

After a sweltering hot day, a severe thunderstorm described as a "mini-tornado" sparked dozens of calls for help with the Dandenong SES responding to 33 jobs from 5pm.

This included veranda roofs being blown off in Keysborough, and a tree falling across a nature strip and landing on a parked truck in Noble Park, which also impacted a power line.

SES also had to tarp damaged roof tiles, and attended a job whereby a pergola roof had flown off and landed in the front yard of a home in Kilburn Court, Keysborough. No one was injured.

A trees also fell on a shed in Keysborough, while roof tiles were damaged with many homes.

Narre Warren SES Unit was kept busy, attending to more than 160 calls for assistance in the City of Casey.

From 5.30pm onwards, SES crews assisted residents with trees on cars, trees on houses and garages and trees on roads.

Badly bearing the brunt of the storm was

Devon Meadows, Lynbrook, Cranbourne, Hampton Park, Tooradin, Clyde and Narre Warren South.

About 69 SES jobs were for damage or blockage to houses and buildings, and about 97 jobs for trees down on roads and carriageways.

Multiple SES units from Malvern, Monash, Whitehorse, Maroondah and Glen Eira also assisted with the clean-up.

"It was heartening to see our emergency services brothers in the CFA come to quickly and eagerly," Narre Warren SES Unit controller Damian Burns said.

"It's about working as one to keep the City of Casey safe.

"Wednesday night was particularly heavy because of the number of trees that had to be cleared," he said.

Waitangi Day celebration

By Jessica Anstice More than 26,600 visitors braved the heat on Sunday 27 January to celebrate Waitangi Day at the Dandenong Market.

Visitors enjoyed traditional New Zealand and Pacific Island street food, live performances and ta moko face painting.

Main attractions included New Zealandinspired street food trucks and market stalls selling New Zealand and Islander food, clothing and Maori carvings.

Dishes included the hugely popular traditional hangi sold by NZ Street Food.

Flavour favourites Perky Nana, Hokey Pokey and Pineapple Lump Kiwi Shakes kept everyone hydrated.

Now in its fourth year, visitors enjoyed traditional haka performances, mau r?kau (martial arts) demonstrations and music by NZ band, Soul Purpose.

Another festival highlight was a performance by Australian Idol finalist Lavina Williams and her sisters Emily and Raze.

Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand.

It is named after Waitangi, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6, 1840.

The Treaty of Waitangi made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Maori rights to their land and gave Maoris the rights of British subjects.

Waitangi Day is all about New Zealand traditions.

Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand.

Inspiration of refugee lives revealed in new book

Support for the senses CMV Groups Staff Foundation donated $2500 to Wallara on Friday 1 February, which will fund the upgrade of their High Support Sensory Garden at their Learning Campus in Dandenong.

At CMV, staff have the opportunity to donate a portion of their salary towards the CMV Group Staff Foundation and these contributions are matched dollar-for-dollar by the CMV Group Foundation.

These funds are then distributed to either staff who require assistance or to a broad range of registered charities.

CMV Staff Foundation invited Wallara to collect the cheque at Hallam Bus and Trucks in Dandenong South.

"Clients were given a tour of the site and got to check out the trucks," Wallara's Kay Noy said.

The work in the garden will be undertaken

by Hallam College's senior students.

"Our high support clients are some of the most vulnerable people in our community, with varied sensory needs and the funding gives us the opportunity to build a variety of sensory activity stations to benefit them," Ms Noy said.

"The garden will feature a cause and effect water station for people who love to watch, listen to and feel water, encouraging learning through play and noise activated sensory stimulation."

The heart-wrenching and inspirational stories of refugees who have found safety and new a life in Australia are told in visceral and compelling detail in a new book published this week.

'Refugee Stories: In their own words' has collected the first-hand accounts of dozens of refugees who have fled conflict or persecution and begun new lives in Australia.

Several stories in the book feature people living in the Dandenong area.

The book recounts the hair-raising and deeply human journeys of people who have had to flee their homes and it reveals their hopes and dreams for their future.

It includes the story of a Syrian Christian man 'George' who survived a year as a captive of the brutal militant Islamist group ISIS and who was constantly threatened with death while being ignorant of the fate of his wife and daughter.

It tells the story of Cambodian refugee Hap Dan who, as a small boy sitting on his father's shoulders, made a fateful journey to freedom and safety through Pol Pot's infamous 'killing fields'.

And there is also the tale of South Vietnamese naval officer Hao Quach, who steered a rickety boat through stormy seas filled with pirates on an epic journey to safety and salvation.

'Refugee Stories' author Laurie Nowell said the book was aimed at building awareness about the reasons refugees come to Australia and the contributions they make.

"Many of the refugees who settle in Australia have experienced trauma, torture or the loss of loved ones. They bring with them memories, traditions, culture and history," Mr Nowell said.

"They also bring with them hopes, dreams and ambitions for their children. They are, by definition, resilient and ingenious people who have overcome challenges and dangers just to get here.

"Refugees have always, and still, have a lot to offer this country."

Refugee settlement agency AMES Australia CEO Cath Scarth said the book was a reminder of the contributions refugees make to Australia.

"Refugees bring with them resilience, optimism and a deep work ethic. Australia is fortunate to have people with these qualities," Ms Scarth said.

'Refugee Stories' is about the experiences and the hopes and aspirations of refugees who have made Australia home.

Funds raised by the sale of the book will go to support refugees and asylum seekers in need.

By Jessica Anstice Classical guitarist Murray Mandel will be performing in Dandenong next week as part of his three year fundraising/public awareness Australian tour for Lifeline.

Mr Mandel's journey began in Canberra in March 2017. He will be travelling more or less anticlockwise around Australia with his campervan, and ending in Canberra in March 2020.

The Sydney musician will be performing at Armada Shopping Plaza in Dandenong four times, from February 13 to 16, 10am to 2pm.

Armada Shopping Plaza is the 117th shopping complex to host him, and Wednesday will be his 283rd performance.

"This fundraising tour is out of my sense of compassion - it's a gruelling tour but a real privilege to reach out and remind as many Australians as possible about Lifelife and that Lifeline is always available 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Mr Mandel said.

So far, directly, Mr Mandel's performances have raised $46,728.45.

100 percent of the donations are forwarded to the Lifeline state/regional branches.

"The accolades have had been forwarded to me from at least 1200 passers-by," he said.

"Hundreds of customers together with nearby shops in the complexes expressed their delights with my live soothing relaxing gentle classical guitar music."

Ball boy lives his dream

By Brendan Rees Aadith Dhinakaran was on the ball at this year's Australian Open.

The 13-year-old lived his childhood dream by rubbing shoulders with the world's best players during the tournament held from January 14-27.

"I just really liked the experience," he said.

"The first time I was on court it was nerveracking but as I went, I settled down."

Aadith of Hampton Park, said he was "surprised to be picked" after missing out last year.

He said he was excited to watch Japanese player Naomi Osaka during a match, who went on to win the women's single title.

His favourite player is Roger Federer, and although he didn't get to see him play, he said a highlight was being on Margaret Court Arena.

Aadith got to take home souvenirs including a free blue tooth speaker and earphones, jumper, towel, and cap.

Selfless at the wheel

By Brendan Rees Susan Anderson has been mentoring young drivers through the L2P program since 2014.

Despite working full time, Susan spends her spare time helping prepare young people from disadvantage backgrounds to obtain a drivers licence.

“People can to think it’s a rite of passage, that we just leave school and go and get our licences,” she says.

“There are people who are out there who haven’t got the availability either their families can’t take them or whatever.”

Ms Anderson says it’s satisfying seeing young people develop with their driving skills, as well as becoming more confident “that they can do this.”

For her dedication, Ms Anderson was announced as the Volunteer of the Year during City of Greater Dandenong Australia Day ceremony on 26 January.

She says it was “very lovely” to be recognised.

“I really quite chuffed - volunteers do things because they want to.

“When we do get something like this it just also brings to the fore how important volunteers are in the community,” Ms Anderson said.

“We’ve got a big community and we need more and more all the time.”

Ms Anderson, who volunteers with the Jesuit Social Services who run the L2P program, says after experiencing a bad car accident 19 years ago when a driver ran a red light and collided with her car, she was motivated her to

“It’s not so much my passion; it’s my desire to make people just so much more aware of the consequences.

“I’ve always loved driving. Everyone thinks it’s a right to get their licence, it’s actually a privilege.

Weda Mohseni leads by example and has a passion to help the community.

She is an inspirational leader in the Afghani community encouraging women and girls to further their education and consider volunteer work.

"I just love helping other people grow, it is immensely satisfying," Ms Mohseni said.

"It is wonderful to see them achieve their personal goals and see them and their families thrive. They are the true inspiration, not only to me but the whole of our community.

"I know that women have a lot more to offer than staying home and looking after the children. They can study and become anything they want," she added.

Ms Mohseni was named the joint winner of the Volunteer of the Year award during City of Greater Dandenong Australia Day ceremony.

The honour was bestowed on Ms Mohseni for her service as an active member of the community and engaging in multiple projects run by community organisations.

She says volunteering "makes me feel good."

"I want women to be empowered, get their own job, and stand on their own feet, under-

stand their rights. That's my goal for them.

Ms Mohseni initially performs a face-toface interview with job/study seekers some basic questions including their personal goals, aspirations, and their current life responsibilities. "(This) determines if they will achieve a good life balance through part or full time work/studies, while also taking into account their previous studies and work experience but more importantly to ensure that these activities fulfil them personally," she says.

"Some clients do experience limited English skills and also need information regarding Australian lifestyle and culture awareness.

Since arriving in Australia in 1995 from Afghanistan, Ms Mohseni has had the opportunity to further her studies including a Diploma of Community Development, Social Welfare and Case Management Chisholm Institute and Training/Assessment certificate.

Anderson and Rangers part ways

By Nick Creely Lynbrook Cricket Club pair Odil Perera and Raheel Bostan are undoubtedly talented, but crucially, have the thirst for hard work, dedication and passion for the game they have grown up loving.

The talented youngsters now get the opportunity to showcase their talents for Victoria Metro Under 15s in the National Championships, which started on 7 February in Brisbane, and are representing the Lakers, the community and the DDCA as they look to pull on the Victorian colours with pride.

Bostan - a Lynbrook junior also playing Premier Cricket with Dandenong - told the Journal of the tremendous pride he feels ahead of a big week of cricket.

"It's reward more than anything to be completely honest, it's a reflection of all the tough work that I have done over the past years that have led me to this point," he said.

"I am extremely proud, and hope to do my parents, club and region proud as well."

Describing himself as "versatile" cricketer, a bit of 'nudger' with the bat and a bowler that relishes the middle overs, Bostan has starred for the Lakers' Under 15 side this season, and has also recently cracked into the seconds at Dandenong, where he has shown some tremendous signs that he will be a force into the future.

He is grateful for his home club and the support they've provided him, but pointed out to two key figures who have given him inspiration.

"Lynbrook has been a great help in this long journey - when I arrived here at 14, they did everything they could to make me prepared for the future, often given me helpful tips and not being afraid to challenge me," he said.

"I really look up to Shane Warne and Brett Forsyth - who's our Premier ones bat. Warney because of his ability to out think batsmen and Brett because of how he plays textbook shots so cleanly and elegantly."

Bostan said his love for the game stems back to his childhood in Pakistan, and has fostered into something he now lives and breathes.

"Being a young Paki boy, I grew up in the streets of Pakistan where asking people if they loved cricket wouldn't even be a question," he said.

"I would play with my mates on the streets and after arriving at Australia, I joined my nearest club, and I did pretty good which kind of led me to pursue it as a career."

Similar to Odil Perera, a gun Lynbrook junior who is getting some Premier Cricket experience with Casey-South Melbourne, he feels overwhelmed and extremely proud to be representing his state.

"The feeling is overwhelming and I feel extremely proud to represent my state," he said.

"I'm really excited to spend the next week in Brisbane/Sunshine Coast playing cricket with my teammates and sharing some memorable experiences with them.

"The matches are going to aid in my confidence with my cricket skills, allowing me to

put forth my skills against the rest of Australia.

"I'm looking to play with a positive mindset and back my abilities to make some runs on the scoreboard and hopefully being able to contribute to another the win for Vic Metro."

Describing himself as a batting all-rounder, Perera is an accumulator of runs who also bowls leg-spin.

Perera's cricketing pedigree is strong - coming from a cricket mad country - and said his family has been the catalyst for his passion for the game.

"Cricket has always been in our household as my father, Himal, used to play first class cricket in Sri Lanka and my sister, Thenushi, who plays cricket too," he said.

"The passion grew in the backyard where my sister and I would play endless hours of cricket, batting, bowling and eventually hitting the ball to the next door neighbours house."

Playing for the Lakers' Under 17 side, Perera only recently joined the club, but loves the community aspect of his new home.

"I joined this club halfway through the season and the club has been inviting giving me the opportunity to be a part of the community," he said.

"The people associated with this team are always striving to give us the best cricketing experience hence I am really thankful for that."

Larissa Anderson's time as head coach of the Dandenong Rangers is over, after informing the WNBL club that she won't seek a new contract for next season.

Anderson, who joined the Rangers in 2015, led Dandenong to the preliminary finals in her first season at the helm (2015/2016 season), before guiding them to a grand final series in season 2016/2017.

The Rangers have struggled to find success over the past two seasons, going 16-26 overall, and missing the postseason on both occasions.

Dandenong Rangers CEO Graeme Allen spoke about Anderson's positive contributions to the club.

"Larissa has been involved in coaching our elite SEABL and WNBL basketball programs for almost a decade, and her contribution has been significant," Allen said.

"Her passion for the team and commitment to the playing group has always been her strength and she will always be a welcome member of the Rangers family."

The Rangers began season 2018/19 in memorable fashion by defeating the reigning champion Townsville Fire on the road, but they were unable to hold onto that momentum as inconsistency took over.

Finishing in fifth position with a 9-12 record, the Rangers will be looking to return to the postseason in 2019/20 and Dandenong Rangers GM Steven Icke talked about the rigorous search that will be undertaken to find the right coach to take the team forward.

"At the centre of any champion team is a head coach driving the performance standards that leads to a strong performance-based culture," Icke said.

"The Jayco Rangers will now start the process of finding that person who can drive our WNBL program towards the results we all aspire to."

Bears become regional champions over Sunshine side

The Bears join Cranbourne from two years ago to take home the silverware, with Matthew Chasemore's side controlling proceedings from the outset to further cement themselves as one of the most successful Twenty20 sides in local cricket.

Brooke Ennis had a big night at Sandown, with an equal career-best four winners. to sweep around the leaders and power to the line to win by a length and a half in 29.48.

Ennis’ first winner came in Race 4 with So It Goes recording an impressive win in 41.88 over the 715m and was followed a race later by Tritt Tritt. Belt Up Bubbs broke a run of six outs by taking out the Free For All in fastest time of the night (29.33) before Charging Yaala rounded out the evening with a 29.38 victory in Race 10.

It was the second time Ennis has trained a quartet of winners on a Thursday night at Sandown Park. In January 2015, Ennis led home Lady Toy and My Bro Fabio to victory in the listed Maidment Memorial and Australian Sprint respectively, as well as Cash Rules and Margins in a marquee night for the kennel.

It didn’t take Berwick long to rattle through Mordialloc on day two of their DDCA Turf 1 clash at Arch Brown Reserve in wintry conditions, but it may very well be the firestarter that the Bears needed.

Crucially, the Bears all but sealed their spot in the four on Saturday, and effectively ended the season of the Bloodhounds and their chances of defending their premiership crown.

The Bloodhounds resumed at 5/104, and in a healthy position to chase down the Bears’ 155 for victory and to draw level with the home side on points.

With opener Brendan Morris set on 60, the Bloodhounds entered the day full of confidence. But that was quickly extinguished, with Brendan Rose (2/26) breaking through immediately, forcing the edge of Morris into the safe hands of keeper Nathan Pilon before he could even add to his overnight score.

Rose’s stunning start continued, with Liam Bence falling on the very next ball, also to the sure hands of Pilon behind the stumps.

After the former Casey-South Melbourne star did the early damage, it was then Matt Chasemore (4/17) who delivered, with the skipper picking up the last three wickets cheaply to end the Bloodhounds on just 109, adding a mere five runs for the loss of five wickets in little over half an hour of play resuming to seal the win.

The great Steve Spoljaric, meanwhile, delivered yet another match winning performance with the bat, amassing 89 in Springvale South’s win against St Mary’s.

Set a challenging 236 for victory, the Bloods got off to a fine start with openers Nathan King (60) and Michael Vandort (18) putting on 61 for the first wicket, but Spoljaric was the key, helping his side recover somewhat from 3/112 to chase the total four wickets down.
