Help for homeless

By Garry Howe SJD Homes in Officer is building houses for the homeless, with a little help from their friends.

Principal Simon Dunstan and his team are in the middle of a building a home in Ashwood and have plans to construct another in Pakenham next year.

The projects are conducted under the auspices of the Victorian Homeless Fund, which builds or renovates homes with a view to relieving and eventually eradicated homelessness.

SJD sales manager Rod Fitzsimmons said the aim was to build a house at a massively reduced rate - as close to free as possible and SJD hds enlisted the help of trades professionals and suppliers to help achieve that goal.

“All of our tradies and suppliers have been great,” he said. “They have offered us things for free or gone to their wholesalers and sourced them at a greatly discounted rate.”

The aim is to build a $220,000 home for as little as $50,000.

To help cover the remainder and make the build as cost neutral as possible, SJD is holding a fundraising event later this month at the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

Renowned ventriloquist Darren Carr, who was a huge hit at last year’s Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch, will entertain guests with his hilarious routine and Gippsland’s premier cover band Plush will provide music to dance the night away.

Mr Fitzsimmons said SJD Homes - winner of last year's Casey Cardinia Business of the Year award - was committed to supporting worthwhile causes in the Casey Cardinia region.

“We were approached by the Victorian Homeless Fund to help with the first one, which is out of the area, but we are very keen to get one in this region after that is finished,” he explained.

“So people supporting us will be helping us build two homes for this extremely important cause.”

Mr Fitzsimmons said the Fund was involved with a selection process for people who have gone through rough times, with the aim of giving them a leg up towards a fresh start.

Yakkerboo’s our top dog

By Rowan Forster The reinvigorated Yakkerboo Festival has been honoured as Cardinia Shire's flagship event - coming off a bumper 2018 celebration that saw Saturday night's entertainment ramped up for the first time ever.

It edged out a pool of impressive nominees to earn the title of Community Event of the Year.

For Committee President Michael Porter, it has been a tumultuous journey since he took the reins in 2010.

"It was really struggling about nine years ago, but then Facebook came along and it took off," he said.

"We promoted it, and that; plus the growth in the area - really helped."

The event, which has been a staple in the Pakenham community since 1976, was plunged into uncertainty due to a volunteer shortage in 2018.

However, a recruitment drive saw the Yakkerboo Committee triple in size; now boasting almost 30 members.

"As a committee, quite a few of us expected someone else to win the award," Mr Porter added.

"There were a huge number of nominees and we were up against some tough competition so it really was a surprise and a great honour."

This year, Yakkerboo Festival is set to evolve again.

With the festivities set to take place at the larger PB Ronald Reserve and the parade taking a different route, Mr Porter suspects 2019 will be one of Yakkerboo's biggest years on record.

"We found it too hard to close Main Street in Pakenham for the whole day, so we're doing it differently," he said.

"There was close to 30 intersections that we had to close for the parade."

Instead, the highly-anticipated parade will run along Henry Street, John Street and Anderson Street.

"It's not a huge route but when you look at last year's route - most of it had no spectators," Mr Porter said.

"We've also got more rides than we've ever had before and that's to try and cope with the extra numbers."

This year's event will mimic that of last year, with Saturday night set to host an extravaganza with food trucks, live music and fireworks.

Now boasting a huge committee, 2019's event will be bigger and better.

"There is a lot of work and it gets harder each year because of the new requirements, with road traffic management - but with a bigger committee; it'll make it a lot easier."

"It's really sitting in a good position for years to come."

Mayor Graeme Moore, long nicknamed Mr Yakkerboo, paid homage to the iconic event.

"The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Yakkerboo Festival; a much-loved local arts and community event that has been running for 42 years," he said.

Ms King said on top of the standard costs of textbooks, uniforms and shoes, schools were increasingly slugging families with bogus 'compulsory costs'.

"Parents who are already struggling to make ends meet are being asked to pay upfront for extra 'essential' fees to cover items like locker keys and I.T licences.

"When you factor in schools asking students to 'bring their own' digital devices, redesigned uniforms as well as the costs of school sport, camps and class excursions, this quickly adds up," she said.

Ms King said the hidden costs of sending a child to a so-called 'free' government primary or secondary school in Melbourne costs between $3,400 and $5,100 each year."

The Education Minister told the Gazette that there is "no doubt that going back to school there's costs for parents and families", citing existing support services such as the Camp, Sports and Excursions Fund, State Schools' Relief and the Breakfast Club program.

"Every year it can be a tough time for that and we're really conscious of that," he said.

When asked if any additional supports, such as free public transport for school students or a top-up to the State Schools' Relief organisation would be considered, Mr Merlino said: "We're always looking at ways we can further support carers and parents."

Principal Gail Butterworth said a 'BYO device' system is not something the school is considering at present.

"Bring your own device is very expensive; I'm not sure we'll go down that path," she said.

Oversized uniforms were donned, hair ties tied tight and school bags packed as over 100 students made their way to Pakenham's newest school.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale attended the opening of the $23.7 million Pakenham Primary School on Thursday 31 January, which features modern classrooms, performing arts facilities and a gym.

The school's layout is the exemplar of evolving approaches to education; ditching traditional single-classroom structures, the school instead has 'flexible learning spaces' which encourage cross-pollination learning between different year levels.

Instead of a four-walled single classroom, these innovative spaces are one vast continuous building. There are, among other things, small 'lecture' style enclaves where teachers and students can present, and art and science spaces with linoleum floors in the centre where kids can engage in messier activities without having to shift to a different building."These flexible learning spaces encourage students to engage with one another and build a school community," Education Department Senior Advisor and Early Childhood Development Mark Anderson said.

"Teachers can adapt the learning to small classes, large classes, and one-to-one depending on the lesson on the day. Each child still has a main homeroom teacher of course, but this helps teachers work with students collaboratively.

"We are also using data so that learning is always personalised for kids. For example, in maths class they might be split up into smaller groups depending on their levels of understanding then, checking the data, they might be shifted to different groups depending on how they're progressing. That way, they're not getting bored if the content is too easy or falling behind because it's too hard."

While the Prep to Year 6 school can accommodate 475 students, it currently only has 150 students enrolled.

"This is a GASP (Growth Area Schools Project) school, meaning it will grow as more houses are built in the area," Principal Gail Butterworth said.

"We have 150 kids starting today, but expect that to go up to 300 next year and full capacity the year after that.

"It's a good system, because it means schools are trying to catch up from the start."

However the first day of school doesn't always bring tears of joy; this week Victorian parents are flooding community service organisations desperate for help to meet excessive return-to-school costs.

In response, the Victorian Council of Social Service is urging the State Government to take significant steps to ease the financial burden for school families.

Black Saturday 10 years on Rebuilding after the blaze Special commemorative edition

By Kyra Gillespie Tina Moonen opens the door to her Labertouche home with a large, warm smile. She is standing exactly where her last house burnt to the ground on Black Saturday 10 years ago.

"I can remember when that [wind] change came through; it was just howling with wind and then the wind stopped. And it was just very, very quiet. The smoke was so thick you couldn't see your hand in front of you. Then all of a sudden it lifted and there was just a wall of fire," she recalled.

Tina is one of 24 who lost their homes as a result of the Bunyip State Forest fire on Saturday 7 February 2009. Since that day Tina and her family have been slowly rebuilding their lives.

"The process of re-building here and the kneejerk fire regulations that came in make me think that probably, if we had our time over again, I don't know whether we would have rebuilt here. But now, ten years on, we love the place and we're happy that we have," she said.

"We essentially lost ten years of our working lives because of the fires. People don't think a lot about stuff that's not insured - like all the fences and the concrete water troughs in the paddocks - they all disintegrated. Everything melted underground, so just to get water and fences back onto the place was the best part of $100,000. And then there were the contents of the sheds that were massively under-insured as well."

The drive to the Moonen's Labertouche property - even ten years on - is littered with reminders of that devastating day. Charred, spindly trees across brown-dry paddocks tower black against new, green growth.

Tina and her husband Craig made the decision to stay and defend their home while their sons Brandon and Jarrod, then 11 and 14, stayed at their grandmother's in Garfield North.

Despite having what they believed was a solid fire plan in place the Moonens were no match for the unprecedented inferno to come.

"It was a really eerie day; I don't know whether my recollections of the whole day are accurate or not because of the way the day was. We were intensely focused on the area out the back of the house, because we thought that's where the fire was going to come down through. And it actually was burning up towards Neerim South, then a wind change came through and it blew back straight towards us.

"I remember we had sprinklers going up on the roof and the fire plan was all happening. I wouldn't say it's as robust as what it is now, but we had an above ground swimming pool and we had a fire pump sitting out there ready to go, we had high pressure hoses going over the roof and everything was ready to go.

"It was an older house but it was a brick veneer and had steel frames. But it all melted and collapsed."

The pair very nearly lost their lives.

"While we were focused on the back, what

"We were so lucky that we did get out.

When we got down to the front of the driveway and we saw all the fire - Craig just said to me - 'What do we do?' And I remember saying, 'I don't know if this is a good idea; people die in cars driving out through fires, I don't know if this is a good idea.'"

"He just went, I don't know how he did it, but he drove through three kilometres of flames first - we didn't even know if we were on the road or not - and then smoke."

The couple were cut off from help. Tina said the CFA and DSE had moved out of the Bunyip State Forest intending to let it burn all the way down to the top of Labertouche Road because of the speed at which is was now moving.

"The smoke finally started to clear when we got out close to the service stations and then we saw it - tonnes of fire trucks out guarding

the service stations because they didn't want them to blow of course.

"Most of the resources were out there and that was hard - to see all the trucks out there.

We also watched a helicopter take water from our dam and they did a load on the school which saved the school which was great - and the other loads they dumped near the servo.

"But we were told the night before that basically if you choose to stay there wasn't going to be, for properties, a lot of support from the CFA." The devastation saw the Moonens living in a school portable and using outdoor shows and toilets for two years while they rebuilt their homes.

Ten years on and the place is only just beginning to feel like home again.

Tina credits her recovery to the many people who helped her - the boys' school St Paul's Warragul and especially her YMCA colleagues.

Black Saturday 10 years on Firey captures black day Special commemorative edition

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In hellish smoke, a bare-headed firey places a reassuring arm around a farmer on Princes Way, Longwarry.

It was one of the enduring images from the horrors of Black Saturday captured by CFA photographer Keith Pakenham.

Through his 36 years with the CFA, Mr Pakenham has been out on 7500 callouts. He has stored more than two million digital images.

But this is a scene that Mr Pakenham recalls instantly 10 years later.

The fire-fighter was First Lieutenant Joe Aitken, standing next to one of his Dandneong brigade’s tankers.

The farmer masked himself with a cloth and sunglasses in the face of thick smoke bellowing from fires in Labertouche.

It was just before it all hit the fan, with the blaze later roaring out of control in Tonimbuk, Longwarry and Drouin West.

“The guy came out of his farm. He was just concerned - asking should I do this, should I do that ...

“Joe is just saying to him we’ve got it under control. We’ll get trucks there and look after your place.

“A few words of advice to get people to calm down a bit is a good strategy.”

The fires destroyed about a dozen houses in the vicinity, as well as outbuildings and a factory.

But the farmer’s property wasn’t one of them.

Luckily for him, his farm was close to a central fire ground for CFA trucks, Mr Pakenham said.

Living at Keysborough at the time, Mr Pakenham started Black Saturday at 6.30am with crews at the five-day-old Bunyip fires.

It was a blaze that fire-fighters knew was set to explode with spotting and ember attack beyond containment lines.

As forecast, it was a searing day of fierce northerlies that buffeted his car out of its lane.

It was one that went quickly because crews were so focused on the immense task.

Then news started to filter through about the catastrophe spreading through Victoria.

“It was horrendous. I’ve been to a lot of fires, the Dandenong Ranges fires over the years ... but it was the heat and the force of the wind.

“I can imagine how horrendous it was on the peak of the mountains at Kinglake. There was nearly nothing you could do to protect yourself.”

But no one could have dreamed that 173 lives would be lost.

Mr Pakenham couldn’t sleep, his mind swarming with the day’s horrors. At 4am, he took off to chronicle the aftermath of Kinglake and Marysville.

Things stood out like a road sign seared and bent like a leaf by the ferocious fire-storm.

Or the white lines freshly painted on the mountain pass between St Andrews and Kinglake.

They had been painted just after the fire to stop vehicles driving off the steep roadside.

Despite hundreds of torched trees dropping all over the place.

It was just one instance of the incredible teams working in extreme danger who never get mentioned, he says.

A courageous young Pakenham filmmaker has created a documentary about his own cancer journey.

Set in and around Pakenham, the documentary titled 'A Different Side' explores the role that humour played in his treatment process.

Philip Roberts was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia - the most aggressive type of leukaemia - at the age of 13.

It was 2010; he was in Year 7 at Beaconhills College, Pakenham when he was hit with the bombshell diagnosis.

It would take him one year, through bouts of chemotherapy, full body radiation and harsh drug cocktails to make a full recovery.

This January marked eight years cancerfree for the now 21-year-old.

"I've always wanted to make this story; I first imagined it as a short film, but then when the opportunity to do the doco came up I realised it made more sense to do it that way," Phil said.

"One of the inspirations actually was a short film called 50/50; it was a comedy and one of the main characters had cancer and I watched it and liked it, and that's where this is kind of based off. I wanted to re-tell my cancer experience, but not make it like the same sob story that we've seen before."

The seven minute project shares a raw and emotional insight into the private moments of a family dealing with the all-too-real possibility that their son and brother might die.

Amidst the tears and angst, there are wonderful and tender moments; nerf gun bullets stuck to the youngsters head - which was bald from the chemo; Phil's little sister Catherine dazed and giggling after coming out of bonemarrow transplant surgery - a procedure that would save her brother's life; and Phil smiling wearily in his hospital bed, giving a weak but assuring thumbs up to the camera.

It took the Swinburne screen and media student around four months to create.

"When I think about it now, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Which sounds weird, but it's honestly how I feel. When I think about it, I think about the good times my family and I had," he said.

Phil's mum Anne, who founded support group Cancer Mums, said it was the hardest time of her life.

"There were times at 3 o'clock in the morning - the loneliest time of the morning - that I'd get up, go for a drive around the lake and plan Phil's funeral," she said.

"Life as you know it stops."

Phil held a screening of the documentary at Evergreen Retirement Village in Pakenham on Wednesday 30 January.

Anne said the documentary marked a kind of closure for her son.

"We had a lot of fun; we had a lot of laughter. We had to try and find a positive for every day, and we did," she said.

Alysha helps others to build their lives

By Jessica Anstice Beaconhills College student Alysha Hall, along with 15 other students, will be travelling to Nepal in November to work in villages, helping families move back into their homes that were ravaged by the earthquake in 2016.

"Throughout my life, I have always loved helping others and I have been able to do this in our local community for the last few years," Ms Hall said.

"However, when this opportunity arose for me to help a family on the other side of the world, I grabbed it with both hands because this is something so unique to what I have done in the past."

Working with Habitat for Humanity, the students will spend a month helping the most vulnerable families to build new homes and transforming lives.

"I admire the work that Habitat for Humanity does all around the world and I knew that I wanted to be a part of this project as soon as it was presented to me," she said.

Ms Hall believes that being able to get to know the family she will be helping and working with them directly will be "quite remarkable".

"We will be able to see first-hand that our hard work has made a significant difference and impact on others," she said.

The Beaconhills College students will be fundraising together by running events both inside and outside of school such as sausage sizzles or bake sales.

"We will also each have a Habitat for Humanity fundraising page that will be open to

service activities within the community.

"I thoroughly enjoy participating in community service activities and I am very grateful for my college and my family for providing me with so many opportunities," she said.

"I feel as though I am very privileged to be in the position I am in, and know that I am very lucky to be able to lead the life that I do.

"Therefore, I take as many opportunities as I can to help others in need who are not in the same position as me."

St John of God Hospital Auxiliary will start 2019 with a general meeting on Monday 18 February.

Following the meeting, St John of God Berwick Hospital overseas volunteer nurses will give a talk on their experiences and wonderful work they have achieved.

This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to join the hospital auxiliary or just come along for the day to listen to these first-rate nurses.

The meeting starts at 12pm at the Berwick RSL, with lunch provided by the hospital.

Aggravated burglary Casey Crime Investigation Unit are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred in Narre Warren South on 16 November.

Police allege that unknown offenders have entered the Benmara Crescent address and stolen a number of sets of car keys before stealing a white VF Holden Commodore and returning a few hours later to steal a 2008 gold Mitsubishi Lancer.

The Lancer was located at approximately 6am on 17 November on Bruce Street, Dandenong.

Police have released CCTV still images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.

The man is described as dark skinned, late teens-early 20s, medium build wearing a grey hoodie with some sort of logo on the front, dark cap, pants and runners with a red satchel bag.

Cash, drugs in Berwick raid A Divisional Response Unit, in conjunction with the Critical Incident Response Team, executed a search warrant at an address in Berwick last Thursday related to an investigation into drug trafficking.

Nearly 70g of methyl amphetamine and $4000 cash was recovered.

A 48 year old woman from Berwick was arrested and remanded overnight to face the Dandenong Magistrates Court on Thursday 31 January, charged with trafficking methyl amphetamine and negligently dealing with proceeds of crime.

Speedsters rack up fines Police detected a Harley Davidson motorcycle travelling at 138km/h in the 100km/h zone of Monash Freeway, Narre Warren at 11:25pm on Sunday February 3.

The 56 year old rider from Pakenham was issued an infringement notice of $604 and his licence was suspended for six months.

Half an hour later the same police unit detected a BMW sedan travelling at 128km/h in the 100km/h zone of Monash Freeway, Narre Warren.

The 45 year old man from Cranbourne was issued an infringement notice of $443 and three month licence suspension.

It has been two years. Before that I worked as a library shelver after school.

What has the public's response been like with the new Bunjil Place Library?

That libraries change lives. Positive responses has been received that it has a great architectural place with a variety of educational resources to borrow from. They love the community languages books which helps them to connect with their own culture/community.

Casey Cardinia Libraries helps to ensure that non-English speakers see themselves represented in their communities. The kids love being around books and coming along to our regular free programs.

As a child I grew up in Anguri, a small village in Afghanistan.

What is your favourite movie?

I love the Maze Runner film series.

If you were PM for a day, what would you do?

Provide free education for all University students.

Always worked too hard.

Big River Bridge Campground in Glen Valley. I love spending Christmas camping there with my family every year.

Nicole designs her world

By Narelle Coulter Berwick fashion entrepreneur Nicole Westmorland wants her customers to care for the planet while curating their wardrobe.

In December, 23 year old Nicole launched her eponymous textile business - Westmorland.

The business is based in two rooms of her parents’ Berwick home.

She describes Westmorland as part of the slow fashion movement, where garments and homewares are handmade using environmentally sustainable practices or are upcycled from old garments or discarded pieces of fabric.

Nicole said she had always wanted to launch her own brand, and after two years working for fast fashion giant Cotton On, she decided to take the plunge.

She said she learnt a lot from the hugely successful Geelong based Cotton On, but found it “creatively crippling”.

“I love my own aesthetic. I found it hard to pump out commercial designs because it was not my personal taste. My aesthetic is very bright, colourful, not very commercial.”

After two years in the fast fashion world, she took some time out to travel and “clear my mind” before returning home to launch her own brand.

“I was working on it behind the scenes while I was working full time so I was very busy, but I was very determined and really want to make something of it.

“Travel was good. It let me freshen up and come back with a clear mind.”

Unfettered by the demands and constraints of the corporate fashion world, Nicole felt free to create designs true to her own style which she described as “very young and bold, very vivid and individual”.

“I don’t like to follow trends. I really like to concentrate on sustainability. There are issues with fast fashion which are not great for the earth. I try not to focus on trends, which is easy in terms of my style which is not very on trend

“My pieces are individual, they don’t go out of style and I hope people will love them for a long time.”

The Westmorland range includes screen printed tote bags and t-shirts, cushions, framed lithographs , upcycled clothing and a category Nicole calls Dog Stuff - waterproof jackets and leashes for pooches.

She said she was always a crafty kid.

Her mum tells a story of when Nicole’s kindergarten teacher called her in to see a young Nicole at work.

“Apparently I had an easel set up while everyone else was playing, and I was painting and I would stand back and look at the painting and go ‘no no no’ and go back to it and

keep painting,” Nicole said, laughing.

She taught herself to sew when she was in primary school, making little bags and simple tops for her sisters and friends.

“I’ve always been a maker. I used to make jewellery, anything I could get my hands on.”

After doing well in her VCE at Berwick Secondary College, she studied for a Bachelor of Textile Design at RMIT, all the while dreaming about starting her own business.

‘I has always been my dream to own my own small business, making and designing my own stuff makes me really happy.”

She is quickly learning that being in business involves more than being creative. She is slowly learning about finance and marketing.

“I have never been great at numbers, but I

am confident and believe in myself. I am passionate and determined to make it work.”

Nicole said she is “almost making money” after absorbing the usual start-up costs associated with a new business.

The launch of Westmorland was held at new Berwick entertainment space, Poker Face, late last year. She is now concentrating on promoting the brand through Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest.

Nicole sent pieces of her work to carefully targeted “influencers” who have helped promote Westmorland on their feeds, among them a graphic artist based in Brunswick and a DJ and MTV personality.

“There is so much you can learn on line these days. There are girl boss websites and young entrepreneurs and blogs and that sort of stuff. “ Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Girl and Girlboss Media is one of Nicole’s role models. The book Girl Boss sits on the shelf in her studio.

“She started her brand from nothing and that was really inspiring.”

In the next 12 months Nicole wants to narrow her product range to discover her “true brand”.

“I want to find out what is Westmorland.

Clarity would be the best thing. I want to find out who is my market, who is my customer and then cater for them.”

In five years she wants Westmorland to be a well- known, specific product range “even if it’s just a range of t-shirts with my designs”.

“I’d love to be manufacturing in Australia and maybe have someone working with me.”

Nicole is determined to follow her passion wherever it may lead.

“Everyone thought I was mad, quitting my amazing job and going into business. My biggest challenge is being brave.

“You just have to start because if you don’t try you won’t know. I know what I am capable of so I just have to keep moving.”

Night dogs see the lighting

By Brendan Rees Cranbourne Greyhound Racing track will shine under new lights after the club installed new energy-saving LED lighting.

The upgrade at the Grant Street complex will mean an electrical saving cost of about 55 per cent.

“These new LED lights are more environmentally friendly and more economic,” Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club chief executive Amanda Cameron said.

“We also believe they will be better for the welfare of the greyhounds racing at night as they have brighter lighting for racing with a better coverage.“ The new lighting was made thanks to a grant from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund.

Castle Electrical won the contract to carry out the installation with Carrum Downs based Plusrite Australia supplying 400 watt LED floodlights with special optical lens.

Plusrite Australia managing director Ross Herdman said when power was lost with the old technology there would be up to a 20 minute start-up time before the lights would turn on again.

“With LED you can turn them off and on instantly and will start immediately,” he said.

“I know in the past Cranbourne racing codes have lost racing because of lights taking a long time to restart.”

He added with the new LED lighting, only 26,800 watts of power would be used meaning a power saving of about 65 per cent.

Barbie, beers and Nollsy For those with a hankering for a beer and barbie, the upcoming South East BBQ is an event worth checking out.

Held at Tynong's Pakenham Racing Club, the 16 February event will be a highlight of the Gippsland social calendar this season.

South East BBQ spokesperson Peter Caldwell said the event will be a great opportunity to get together with mates while enjoying the best meat and beer that Gippsland has to offer with the ultimate BBQ soundtrack performed by the quintessential Aussie rocker, Shannon Noll.

"For many countries and nationalities

around the world, the BBQ is a culinary custom, and they all do it differently but have one thing in common - the BBQ is a cultural experience that centres around the celebration of food, friends and family," Mr Caldwell said.

"The South East BBQ will showcase the cooking styles of American, Filipino, Cypriot and Argentinian BBQ with local BBQ heroes including Mauro Callegari from The Independent (Gembrook) and Leigh Marino from The Courthouse (Warragul).

"We'll also have local beer flowing to wash it all down from brewers including Jetty Road

Pink Ladies out in force

By Russell Bennett One of the great 'can't miss' events on the local cricket calendar will return to Toomuc Reserve later this month as the Pakenham Cricket Club hosts its annual Pink Ladies Day luncheon.

Now entering its sixth year, the function has already raised a staggering $26,088 for the McGrath Foundation - which funds breast care nurses in communities right across Australia.

The foundation currently has 120 McGrath Breast Care Nurses who help individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer by providing physical, psychological, and emotional support - for free.

More than 67,000 families have been supported since 2005, but more nurses are desperately needed to meet the growing rate of breast cancer diagnosis in Australia.

Pakenham's annual Pink Ladies Day luncheon will be held at the Pakenham Football Club social rooms on Saturday, 16 February from 12 noon.

Tickets are $40 each, with guests receiving a complimentary champagne on arrival.

They will also have a buffet lunch, hear from a guest speaker, and witness and take part in the games and raffles throughout the day. Drinks will also be available at bar prices.

The Pakenham Cricket Club's fundraising target for 2019 is $7500.

Ed hadn't been seen without a beard for 45 years prior to the event, but he was more than happy to see it go for the cause.

After the shave, back in the rooms, Ed admitted becoming emotional - particularly when presented with a Mark Knight caricature of him with his beard.

"I was talking to a lady who'd gone through breast cancer, and she just about had me in tears," Ed said.

"I just said 'I'm only shaving my beard off you've gone through the hard yards. Whether my beard grows back or not isn't a major drama, but you've got to go through life getting tests all the time which is always a worry in the back of the mind'."

Ed said it hit home just how many of the ladies in attendance for the function would have had their own, personal stories to tell.

"Life isn't just fun and games," he said at the time.

"There are a lot of things happening to good people and it's just terrible - you can't take anything for granted."

Pakenham will take on Tooradin in a Premier grade blockbuster on the same day as the Pink Ladies function.

Lions claim the Twenty20 silverware

By Russell Bennett The stifling heat at Pakenham's Toomuc Reserve for the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty-20 final day was matched only by the heat of the action out in the middle as the home side claimed its second trophy in the history of the tournament.

The Lions began the day taking on Cranbourne Meadows on the back oval at Toomuc Reserve, while on the front ground Devon Meadows battled it out with Nar Nar Goon/ Maryknoll.

Pakenham restricted Cranbourne Meadows to just 8/94 from its 20 overs in their semifinal and, astonishingly, only conceded one boundary for the innings as Tom Tyrrell (3/18) and Sean Gramc (3/14) snared three wickets apiece.

The Lions didn't exactly have things all their own way in the chase, however, reaching the target with an over to spare for the loss of six wickets (6/96) as Troy McDermott (22 not out) and Ben Maroney (22) top-scored.

On the front ground, an 83-run opening stand between Luke Hamilton and marquee player and DDCA star, former Sri Lankan ODI player Kaushalya Weeraratne (44) set the Panthers well on the path to a match-winning total.

Though, ultimately, they were their side's only two batsmen to pass 20, they laid the foundations for the innings as Devon Meadows ultimately reached 6/168 from their 20 overs.

The Marygoons went into the clash without star top-order batsman Michael Giles (due to a significant hamstring injury), and lost Daniel Glen in the cruelest of circumstances during the chase.

He appeared to sustain a serious knee injury while running between the wickets and was forced to retire hurt before later departing to the hospital for scans.

The Marygoons' chase never reached top gear as Brad Senior (21) and skipper Kallon Rigby (23) were two of only three batsmen to reach double figures.

The Panthers won the toss for the final and elected to bat, opening up with Hamilton and Weeraratne against Tyrrell and the spin of Jason Williams.

Both were removed in quick succession before Meadows skipper Kyle Salerno (14) and Brad Miles (40) set about resurrecting the innings.

Tormey's performance earned him player of the game honours, while Pakenham (2017 and 2019) joined Cardinia (2007 to 2010, 2012, 2013) and Koooweerup (2011, 2014, and 2015) as multiple winners of the Kookaburra Cup. They'll now advance to play as part of next year's Regional Big Bash.

This Saturday is the final leg of the TRFM Gippsland Carnival, with the running of the Spolly's Syndications Cranbourne Cup. The Cup has free activities for everyone from face painting and bubble soccer, to the thrilling kite rider.

Brownlow medallist and former Collingwood premiership star Dane Swan will also be on course in the party paddock, enjoying the free live music from Bosley, as well as the food trucks.

A commanding Cranbourne Cup heat win from Orson Allen will likely see the super sprinter start favourite in Saturday's $67,000 final.

The Correy Grenfell-trained greyhound appears primed to win his first country cup after taking out his heat in a breathtaking 29.61 seconds, just short of Pop The Cork's 29.60sec track record, which has stood since 2016.

Middle boxes are generally considered a disadvantage in greyhound racing but, remarkably, three of the four heat winners exited box five, with the remaining heat won from box four.

The other heat winners were Poke The Bear (30.09sec), which once again produced an incredible come-from-behind victory; his kennelmate Azkaban (29.87sec); and Huxley (29.90sec).

After star all-rounder Chris Smith (8) was caught by a blinder from Demons keeper Riley Clark, and opening partner Jack Anning (8) was triggered leg before much to the chagrin of the Pakenham faithful, the home side stumbled to 2/26.

After 50 overs, the Lions were reeling at 6/78 with three wickets apiece to Jess Mathers (3/53) and Mark Cooper (5/44). But over the following 26 overs, skipper Rob Elston (28), stalwart Jason Williams (76), and youngster Dan Vela (32) affected one hell of a rescue mission for the innings.

Pakenham was ultimately dismissed early in the 77th over for 192 - a world away from the trouble of 6/51.
