A day for all Hundreds of Casey residents celebrated Australia Day on Saturday January 26 with a range of activities at Pioneers Park in Berwick.

Awards were presented to the unsung heroes of our community.

The official flag-raising was led by the Berwick Pipers and the Australian Airforce Cadets, No 403 Squadron Beaconsfield and Lucinda De Silva sang the National Anthem.

New mosque plan Casey Council has received a planning application to use and develop land in Narre Warren North for a Place of Assembly (Place of Worship).

The site, 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road was subject to a previous application refused by council in 2016.

"The previous application, which council refused in 2016, drew a lot of community interest and concerns around access to and from the site and the impact on residents in the area in terms of traffic, parking and noise," cr Rosalie Crestani said.

Decade after fires All members of the community, family, friends, bereaved, and volunteers are invited to come along to a memorial ceremony to reflect on how far the community has come since the Black Saturday tragedy in 2009.

The memorial ceremony will be held at Amberley Park Shopping Centre in Narre Warren South at the Memorial Park bench area,

opposite IGA. A special memorial Ginkgo Biloba Tree will be planted behind the Memorial Park bench which will in future provide a sheltered spot for members of the community to sit and reflect.

Spotlight on Casey’s outstanding young The City of Casey is home to many outstanding young people doing great things in the community, and the nominees for the 2019 Casey Young Citizen of the Year are a shining example of that.

Each year on Australia Day, council recognises outstanding local citizens, who go above and beyond in their contribution to the community, through this awards program.

There are four categories, Casey Citizen of the Year, Casey Young Citizen of the Year, Casey Senior Citizen of the Year and Casey Community Group of the Year.

The 2019 Casey Young Citizen of the Year nominees: Sarah and Maya Ghassali, Berwick, 17.

The twin sisters have created their own podcast 'Refugees On Air', which aims to humanise the ongoing refugee crisis in Australia and educate the community. The girls conduct interviews with refugees from different backgrounds and experiences, sharing their inspiring journeys with the community in hope of changing the representation of refugees in the media. Furthermore, by utilising the Student Youth Network (SYN) community radio station, they have inspired many youths to join SYN and create their own podcasts or projects.

The girls have completed this work alongside their VCE studies and plan to continue to spread a positive message about the struggles and successes of new Australians in the years to come.

Tareq Baktani, Cranbourne North, 25.

Tareq is a volunteer with a youth group of 300 young people from the Afghan community in Casey. He organises music and dance cultural activities, as well as sporting activities (football) every month for young men, women, girls and boys from the youth group to participate in. As a dedicated volunteer, Tareq takes pride in contributing to the group and providing activities that help build a sense of belonging for young people, connecting them with their Afghan culture and heritage. He also works with the community to set up for functions such as Afghan New Year and supports the work of the Afghan Australian Philanthropic Association.

He understands the value of education and plays an important role in encouraging young people to continue their studies and supports them with homework if required.

Alisha Austin, Cranbourne North, 24.

Alisha is a volunteer who despite suffering a chronic illness, always gives her time to the community with a smile on her face. She has been a member of the Cranbourne Lions Club

Alisha has assisted the Cranbourne Lions Internet Branch to get up and running, helping them with their online presence and organising their first community fundraiser. Alisha organises all the youth events and has been instrumental in getting new projects for youth at the club.

At a district level, Alisha has been on a district cabinet, which oversees the 63 clubs in the district, for three years. She produces and edits a monthly newsletter and helps the older members setup and navigate social media. She also volunteers every month at the Cranbourne Bluelight Disco and has been doing so since she turned 18.

Livinia Walden, Narre Warren South, 15.

Livinia is a member of the Narre Warren South Scout Group and the Australian Girls' Choir. As a Scout, she participates in many events in the local community including ANZAC day commemorations and citizenship ceremonies. She is currently planning one aspect of her service award which will include raising awareness of youth mental health issues, a major focus for scouting in the Casey district. This year Livinia was selected as one of 56 choristers (out of 5,000 nationally) for the Australian Girls' Choir international tour of Italy, Austria and Hong Kong - a pinnacle achievement in the AGC. In this tour, not only did they represent Australia singing to overseas schools and the public, they were also invited by Pope Francis to sing for him at the Vatican in Rome. At school, Livinia is actively involved in the environment team and school production.

Deanna Bailey, Cranbourne, 25.

Deanna Bailey is an outstanding volunteer with 2nd Chance Cat Rescue. She is a pharmacy assistant, works as a disability support worker and in her spare time, she fosters cats and kit-

tens for 2nd Chance Cat Rescue, attends Adoption Days and helps raise much-needed funds for the rescue. 2nd Chance Cat Rescue gets lots of kittens that have been neglected and do not trust people. With her calming nature, Deanna helps the kittens warm up quickly and turn into confident adoptable cats and kittens.

Her caring personality shows when animals are sick and need special attention, spending many nights up with kittens that have been unwell.

Mobaraka Hussaini, Lynbrook, 19.

Mobaraka is currently one of the ambassadors of Casey's 'We Are. We Can. We Will.' Campaign, where she encourages and promotes women and girls to be active. She is also one of the South East Community Links (SECL) Youth Leaders, which sees her support the delivering of activities, projects/event management, participate in learning and training to develop leadership skills and organising local youth led activities including volunteers for an afterschool program at Hampton Park Secondary College. Mobaraka supported the SECL worker to deliver the 'Building Safe Communities For Women and Children' project. Mobaraka was as volunteer manager for the Narre Warren Soccer Club. Her role was to encourage, support and help the girls with public transport information and registration. Whilst in the role, she successfully linked three of the players with a sports scholarship. Mobaraka also helps girls and women within her own Afghan community, by providing information and getting them involved in sports and helping them to find a sports club.

Nancy Loomba, Cranbourne East, 24.

Nancy is a project officer for Disability Employment Services, where she supports people with disability to get job ready, find a role right for them and offers post placement support.

She has also participated in organising mental health, autism, drug abuse and human rights information sessions and workshops to raise awareness and help educate the local community in these areas. She has also worked with Victoria Police and Leadership Victoria where she brainstormed ideas for how to better engage disengaged youth. She is a Multicultural Community Ambassador for Cricket Victoria, AFL and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 and has supported and promoted Melbourne Cricket Champions League and Urban League in Casey with support of Cricket Victoria and Melbourne Stars. She is a participant in the Women in Leadership course organised by Leadership Victoria.

Susan’s tireless work earns OAM

By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren's Susan Bergman was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division.

The performing arts enthusiast said she was quite "overcome with emotions" and felt "extremely humbled" by the award.

Ms Bergman's father, retired commando Captain Donald Bergman, received an OAM in 2017 at the age of 88 for service to veterans and their families, and to the wider community.

"My father Don and mother Audrey have always given back to the community and taught myself and my five siblings how important this is," Ms Bergman said. "I am thrilled to be following in my father's footsteps and grateful that I can thank both of my parents for their encouragement and support.

"I know they will be very proud when they receive the news."

Ms Bergman is a member of the City of Casey Arts and Cultural committee.

"As one of many community members on this committee, I am able to give input into the arts in the City of Casey," she said.

"The City of Casey has certainly set a very high benchmark for other councils with its support of the arts. It is fantastic that the staff and councillors value community members and their input."

Her list of achievements is impressive.

Ms Bergman currently manages the Cranbourne Community Theatre (CCT), ensuring it runs well for both Cranbourne Secondary College and community hirers.

She is also involved in the Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts and BATS Amateur Theatre Company.

"The CCT is a wonderfully creative outlet for so many people in the community to enjoy," she said.

"It brings people, young to old and from all walks of life together in an inspiring environment which certainly has many positive elements, such as socialisation.

"Working backstage, on stage, front of house or being in the audience, there is something for everyone to be able to participate in."

Swift’s talent earns gold Berwick musician Andrew Swift picked up two Golden Guitar awards on Saturday, January 26 in Tamworth for Alt Country Album of the Year and New Talent of the Year.

With four nominations in total, Mr Swift found himself alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.

"I was blown away to hear my name read out for the New Talent of the Year and for Alt Country Album of the Year," he said.

"I'm truly humbled and I can't see this smile fading for some time."

Twelve months ago Mr Swift took a big leap of faith.

He gave up his day job repairing caravans, to set off on his own journey and focus on his music and it certainly paid off.

Having spent time working in the Melbourne music scene, Alt Country is relatively new territory for Mr Swift. However, the classic roots country suits both his vocal styling and lyrical turn of phrase like a glove.

Mr Swift made a big first impression on the country music world when he became a Toyota Star Maker grand finalist.

He also teamed up with respected Americana songwriter Gretta Ziller and the pair took an intimate show of songs and storytelling on tour to caravan parks along the east coast of New South Wales and Victoria, en route to Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Ever the dogged performer, Mr Swift has supported the likes of Shane Nicholson, Catherine Britt, Amber Lawrence, Adam Eckersley, and Lachlan Bryan.

When the time came to record his second record, there was no shortage of country music cavalry that flocked to Mr Swift's side.

Under the guidance of sought-after producer Matt Fell at Sydney's Love HZ studio was a band that included guitarist Glen Hannah, drummer Josh Schuberth, Fell himself on bass, guitars, keys and percussion, Hammond organist and Adam Eckersley Band member Dan Biederman and Sam Hawksley on lap steel.

Amongst Mr Swift's guest vocalists are Britt, Ziller and Katie Brianna.

The record was mastered in Los Angeles by Pete Lyman, whose credits include Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell.

Josh and friends hit the track in support of farmers

By Jessica Anstice Five-year-old Josh, with the help of his mum Lyndall Fokkens organised a 'Bike-A-Thon' on Tuesday 22 January to raise money for Aussie farmers battling the drought.

Josh had his sister and six friends ride around the bike track on Avebury Drive in Berwick.

He had a couple of other friends come to cheer him on.

Josh rode 101 laps of the track and his little band of friends rode a further 500 or so between them.

Prior to his Bike-A-Thon, when people asked Josh how many laps he thought he would ride in 90 minutes, he would reply "thousands" or "infinity".

"Josh is quite confident in his bike-riding abilities," Ms Fokkens said.

Cousins and friends Matthew, Isla, Emma, Naomi, Esther and Elijah supported Josh (front) at the Bike-A-Thon in Berwick on Tuesday.

"My husband and I were more realistic about what he could achieve in the designated time span, and we were pretty amazed when he exceeded our expectations by riding 101 laps.

"We think that having his friends with him

helped him to push that little bit harder."

Josh's said that the Bike-A-Thon went well, he enjoyed riding with his friends and he was very tired at the end.

With 15 minutes to go, Josh had 80 laps on the board, so he rode with fierce determination to try and crack the 100 lap mark.

After he finished his Bike-A-Thon, Josh asked if he could do a ride for the farmers every January.

"My husband and I have been surprised and gratified by the support shown by the community for Josh's Bike-A-Thon," Ms Fokkens said.

Berwick Star News published a story prior to Josh's event.

"The story definitely helped to generate some interest and excitement," she said.

"A lady called Zoe, who is a friend of Josh's great-grandfather, read the story in paper. She

recognised the family name and so came to the bike track to say hello and donate some money.

"Another gentleman was out walking while the Bike-A-Thon was taking place, and he called past to see if we were 'the people from the paper' and added his own donation too.

People have been so encouraging of Josh."

So far $1067 has been donated to the Drought Angels in honour of Josh's cycling, but this tally will grow in the coming days as there are a few more donations in the pipeline from Josh's family and friends.

"Josh had a goal to raise $500 for the farmers, so he's pretty thrilled that he's managed to double that," Ms Fokkens said.

"I think that the fundraising from the BikeA-Thon worked well because people are eager to support a five-year-old kid who's trying to make a small difference in the world."

No, not a landfill site or transfer station. I live in Hampton Park. But lately it seems our community needs to learn to keep our suburb a clean and healthy place. Not just for our community but for the wildlife and for all of us - we humans rely on the health of planet Earth and its oceans. What happens locally can affect the planet and seas globally.

All around I see scattered litter - mostly cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags, wrappers, plastic-lined slurpee or coffee cups, straws and bread bags. It is thrown onto naturestrips and gutters where it ends up in our waterways and oceans; or dropped around Rivergum Creek and Hallam Trail Creek. This litter chokes waterways, oceans and animals. It breaks down into tiny pieces of plastic and enters the food chain- yes, your fish and chips might be better described as fish, plastic and chips.

But a rubbish tip is not complete without larger items. And the people of Hampton Park sadly have been busy providing much dumped rubbish - mattresses, cushion stuffing, e-waste such as TVs, furniture, renovation materials and even several toilets.

I challenge readers to think about the real cost of "free" dumping and littering - someone has to clean it up and that costs money that *we* pay as rates or taxes. Then there is the environmental hazard to wildlife and to our waterways and oceans where it may end up. And ultimately the cost to all humanity - we rely on the health of our planet and its oceans for our very existence.

So please, if you see dumped rubbish or littering from a car, report it - ask Casey Council if you're not sure who the land is managed by.

We all have a rubbish bin, recycling bin, garden waste bin and two hard waste collections every year. The hard waste collections can include commonly dumped items like TVs, tyres, broken furniture and mattresses. There are also many avenues to rehome usable goods - for example op shops (check first and don't leave outside), selling or giving away online and larger charities may even collect items with vans or trucks. Taking rubbish home if there's no bin is as easy as carrying the full food or drink item to the park or street in the first place. So there's absolutely no reason for dumping or littering.

Perhaps you might also be able to use less single use plastic - do you use a keep mug for hot or cold drinks, a reusable straw (or no straw), a refillable water bottle and reusable shopping or carry bags for example? Or could you rethink whether that bunch of bananas or single item need to go inside a plastic produce bag? Even if you do the right thing and bin it, these items can be blown around into gutters on bin collection days and add to the litter problem. Not to mention our landfill is nearly full.

I see many bread bags floating in the creek or tied to branches too. I wonder if people have considered composting it or freezing it before it's stale? They'd be doing the ducks a favour by not feeding unhealthy food it to them too it's kinder just to watch them not feed them.

And to those everyday heroes I see sometimes who bother to pick up others' litter because no one else is going to - thank you.

Party in the park

By Jessica Anstice Hundreds of Casey residents celebrated Australia Day on Saturday with a range of activities at Pioneers Park in Berwick.

"A good crowd attended the event over the whole day," Berwick Rotary Club member and Australia Day chairperson Isobel Caulfield said.

"My personal highlight was how the Rotary Club of Berwick and the Inner Wheel Club of Berwick members worked hard and pulled together to run a very successful day."

Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood presented the Australia Day Awards which acknowledge the volunteer efforts by local residents.

"I was deeply touched to see that some of the recipients were in tears while getting appreciated and recognised," he said.

"They are special because they are the unsung heroes of our community, and they volunteer (sometimes for decades) for a wide range of causes, groups and projects without seeking thanks or recognition."

"We're all about keeping our community safe and to do that we need to be present in our community," Narre Warren SES Unit controller Damian Burns said.

"To be seen makes us known and accessible every person who dropped by to see us yesterday now has a better understanding of what we do and, more importantly, how to access us.

"It's also great fun for the children as we had our mini SES truck on hand, complete with radio, sirens and flashing lights, together with our rescue boat."

Berwick recognises its outstanding individuals A number of Casey residents were recognised and celebrated as outstanding individuals who go above and beyond in their contribution to the community at the Berwick Australia Day Awards on Saturday.

Lindsay Harding Mr Harding has been a member of the Berwick Men's Shed since July 2012.

Since joining he has worked assiduously to ensure the shed was an inclusive place.

He was elected president around 2015. He was a natural networker and a dab hand at obtaining grants for the shed.

Pioneer for many causes

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Jan Trezise, Berwick's newly-awarded Medallist of the Order of Australia (OAM), has always embraced a challenge.

She was the first female mayor of Springvale - home for hundreds of refugees fleeing post-war Vietnam - in the 1980s.

It was an exciting time as Springvale "came to grips" with the immense wave of change, Ms Trezise recalls.

At the time, there were "myths" that the new arrivals got "a lot of money, a lot of help and are taking our jobs".

"Fortunately at the time, the Department of Immigration was able to provide documentation to show this is what they get when they arrive.

"We were able to knock out all the myths floating around."

Ms Trezise was the inaugural co-ordinator of Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau's (SCAAB) migrant host scheme.

The bureau was set up to provide accessible social services, such as a national-first pilot program of ethnic teaching aides at the local primary school.

The aides scheme later inspired a national program.

As mayor, she oversaw a comprehensive history of Springvale book written by historian Gillian Hibbins.

It brought the community together - seventh-generation settlers as well as the newest arrivals revelled in the common narrative.

Ms Trezise was the founding principal of an allnew 1400-student Gleneagles Secondary College

in Endeavour Hills, which opened in the 1990s.

It was probably one of the only schools that opened during the Kennett era - a time marked by widespread school closures.

"The community just demanded that school."

After her stint as principal ended in 2001, she helped found the Friends of Ermera support group - which has helped equip and build schools in Timor Leste.

All of Friends of Ermera's donations have gone into Timor Leste's economy.

"I needed something else to occupy my mind and my social conscience."

She already knew of East Timorese students and families at school, and had followed the fledgling nation's "devastating" referendum for independence marked by widespread death and destruction.

There was a "moral debt" owed to the fledgling nation's people - thousands who were killed while helping Australian soldiers in World War II. Some of the students that started in kindergartens built by Friends of Ermera have kicked on impressively.

One is a Timor Leste parliamentarian, one of their trained teachers is now a national teacher trainer.

Ms Tresize is currently visiting Timor Leste, assisting teachers at a 2500-student high school with English-language courses.

The courses are self-guided, allowing students in classes as large as 79 to work at their own pace.

The money raised is going towards Bk2basics Melbourne, Headspace and Challenge.

Further, 12 inches of her hair was donated towards making wigs for cancer patients.

Emma's mother, Sarah Logie, also cut off 10 inches of hair.

Ms Logie donated her hair towards Sustainable Salons, an organisation designed to collect, repurpose and redistribute resources.

To date, Emma has raised $630 via her Gofundme profile.

Emma and her friend Kirsten held a stall at the Pakenham Night Market, to sell raffle tickets and lollies, which raised a further $185.

"I am extremely proud of my daughter for genuinely wanting to help others," Ms Logie said.

"Please help Emma in paying it forward and wanting to put her beautiful hair towards a good cause."

Chair yoga in Tooradin Looking for a way to turn back the age clock?

Residents are invited to join a chair yoga class that is held each Friday at Tooradin Public Hall.

This class is a modified form of gentle yoga, using mindful movement with the breath. Options available for all body types allowing those with injury, illness or mobility issues to participate.

Choirs members wanted Fenix Chorale Inc.is a choir consisting of thirty plus sings beautiful four part harmonies to a variety of popular songs and performs several times during the year at local retirement villages and other venues. The choir was formed in September 2016 and holds rehearsals in the Auditorium at Woodlands Park, 72 Kangan Drive, Berwick on the first, second and third Wednesdays of the month, except the Christmas Holidays, 2.30 - 3.45pm. The conductor is Vic Clement. Narre Warren Calisthenics Club (NWCC) last year celebrated a brilliant 2018 competition season.

Both the junior and senior sections won their state title competitions and became 2018 state champions.

Veronica Howlett-Pallot said she was a very proud coach to have both her teams accomplish this.

"Such achievements are the result of commitment and dedication of coach, assistants and performers," Veronica said.

"Our juniors and inters were also overall division winners at Ballarat in the Royal South Street competition. Well done to Jess AlyceGermain who coaches our inters."

Veronica said that the NWCC has gone from strength to strength and she is very proud of all sections, from tinies through to masters.

"Calisthenics is a sport that enhances both strength and grace and builds confidence in performers that extends beyond calisthenics

Melbourne’s ready to roll MELBOURNE DEMONS AFLW 2019 SEASON PREVIEW After last season falling agonisingly short of a grand final berth, the Melbourne Demons AFLW squad will be looking to bounce back from that heartbreak in season 2019.

Needing a win in the final home and away game of the season to book their place in the big dance, Melbourne fell by two points to the Western Bulldogs in an absolute thriller.

Since then, the Demons' list has undergone some massive changes. Superstar Daisy Pearce is out for the season, expecting twins, while Mel Hickey and Richelle Cranston have both moved onto Geelong.

Whilst the loss of those stars will be felt across the ground, Melbourne still boast an even and deep squad. The likes of Elise O'Dea, Karen Paxman, Lily Mithen, speedster Aliesha Newman and a pair of local stars; Bianca Jakobsson and Tyla Hanks will all play vital roles for the Demons.

Cora Lynn-product Hanks, who starred for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Girls competition, was selected by Melbourne with their first pick (#6) in the 2018 AFLW Draft and you can expect the tough midfielder to slot right into

the Demons squad.

Melbourne kicks off their season this weekend against Fremantle on Sunday afternoon at Casey Fields in what promises to be a great match.

Whilst the Dockers finished second last in season 2018, due to the incredibly close nature of the league, they were just one win behind the Demons in third place.

Undoubtedly, the big question mark for the Demons this season is how they cover the loss of three star players. The class that has left the club is hard to replace and they will need every player to stand up and take their respective individual games to the next level.

The likes of young up-and-coming players Eden Zanker, Katherine Smith and Madeline Brancatisano (#15 in the 2018 AFLW Draft) will be keys to success, as will Tegan Cunningham, Meg Downie and Shelley Scott.

The Demons play three games at Casey Fields this season. Round 1 against Fremantle (February 3), Round 4 against North Melbourne (February 24) and Round 7 against Adelaide (March 16).

Pastras Jr - the son of a gun on the rise

By Hayley Wildes The Pastras name is well-known in local cricket circles and there's another Pastras on the rise who is already making a name for himself.

Nick Pastras Jr, son of Upper Beaconsfield legend Nick Pastras, is just 15 years old, but already looks destined for greatness and was recently selected to the Victoria Country Under 15 team.

Pastras Jr will head off to the Sunshine Coast with his Victoria Country teammates next week to take part in the National Championships.

He really started to make some noise last year, when he had one of the better finishes to a season that anyone could wish for.

Not only did he win two premierships with Upper Beaconsfield in the West Gippsland Cricket Association - in Under 14s and E Grade - he also claimed man of the match honours in both deciders.

In the E Grade Grand Final, Pastras Jr was simply unstoppable. Taking on Cranbourne Meadows, he delivered a near-perfect innings to finish a century.

What made the win even more special was the fact that he put on a Premiership-winning 103-run stand with his Dad. The pair dominated and controlled the game to perfection, but Pastras Sr was run out for 59 and it's something he doesn't let his son forget about.

"He always has a go at me because he got run out and I always say if he was quicker he would've made it." Pastras Jr said with a laugh.

Pastras Jr grew up with a cricket bat in his hands and began playing Milo Cricket at a very young age, but fell out of love with the game for a short time. Looking back on that period, he now sees how it helped him rediscover his love for the sport.

"I actually stopped playing when I was about 11 or 12, I hated it, I just preferred footy and tennis," he said.

"Then the Big Bash started and I was watching that and loving it.

"My mates at school were playing and they needed a fill-in one day so I started playing again, got the bug for it and it's just gone from there - I love it."

Pastras Jr is now playing for Berwick in the Turf 1 Reserves and the South East Country Sharks in the Youth Premier League, as well as training with Premier club St Kilda.

The increased standard has driven his improvement and taking on some of the best cricketers in the state has been a great experience, as he explains.

"The standard is a lot higher and it's a better experience playing on turf because that's what all representative cricket is played on."

"The standard of the players and seeing how they go about it is really helpful and there is a heap to take in."

Whilst he isn't playing for Upper Beaconsfield anymore, Pastras Jr will be forever grateful for their support.

"They've been massive - they made me

strive to play cricket hopefully for Australia one day," he said.

"The people that I had supporting me at Upper Beaconsfield, they were just such an awesome club for me when I was there."

The all-rounder is capable of turning a game on its head and when he lines up for Victoria Country next week, the rest of Australia had better watch out.

The Future Footballers Project is changing lives, on and off the field, for youth in the South East.

Founder Gavin Ithier, talked about what the program is all about and how he is using soccer as a harness to reach out to those in need in the local community.

"I've been doing a little bit of work for a soccer academy over the last couple of years and I was going to places like the English Language School and just all different areas, and what I saw was that little kids, their parents just don't have the money to send them to play local soccer," Ithier said.

"I just thought that I'd start the Future Footballers Project and the first thing that we've done is run the Australia Youth Team."

The Australia Youth Team is a 25-and-under multicultural team from the South East.

On Saturday night, the Australia Youth Team travelled to AAMI Park and put on a show in the final of the U-Nite Cup, played as the curtain raiser to the Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC blockbuster.

Taking on Timor Leste, winners of three U-Nite Cup finals, the Australia Youth Team played brilliantly and scored a convincing 3-0 win.

"It was so great to just get there, the boys were so excited," he said.

"Just from the moment we got off the bus to when we walked up the race to warm up, the smiles on their faces were priceless.

"They played amazingly and to win it, that was just fantastic for them after working so hard."

As well as fielding the Australia Youth Team, the Future Footballers Project also run clinics for kids in the local area and provide scholarships to allow kids to play at club level.

"We're aiming to provide 10 scholarships this year, so we're trying to raise money for that to get kids into local soccer clubs," he said. "$5000 will provide 10 scholarships, which will give them boots and a training kit as well as fees."

The clinics are a highlight for Ithier.

"To kids with not much, they just love it," he said.

Bears claim the big scalp

But some late fight to superstar Nuwan Kulasekera (68) ensured the Bloodhounds could fight to 7/131 at stumps, but still with a loss that leaves them six points out of fourth spot.

And St Mary’s (3/210) gave themselves the best possible chance to break out from the bottom of the table after smashing North Dandenong (141) at Lois Twohig Reserve.

In Turf 2, it’s almost safe to say that Narre South, Dingley and Narre North will be playing Turf 2 finals this season.

But Cranbourne managed to keep their finals hopes alive after a century to Lucas Ligt saw the Eagles defeat Parkmore Pirates at Casey Fields.

Despite a crunching half century to Sanjeewa Weerasinghe (61), the Magpies were restricted to 9/173 off their 40 overs.

Dingley’s premiership hopes continue to climb, after dismantling Dandenong West at Souter Oval.

After racking up 9/306 the weekend prior, the Dingoes rolled the Westers for just 134, with Calvin Barlow (6/46) and Christo Otto (3/43) in brilliant form with the ball.

And Narre South (9/252) were a class above St Brigid’s/St Louis (88) on day two. After already claiming the points on day one, the Lions elected to spend the day at the crease, with Joe Thomas (66), Michael Ritchie (38) and Jawed Hussaini (41) backing up Morteza Ali’s (48) dominance from the weekend before.

Swans face big challenge

DDCA REVIEW TURF 1 & 2 - ROUND 11 (DAY TWO) There’s no bigger scalp than the ladder leading powerhouse Buckley Ridges.

For Berwick, defeating the Bucks on day two of their clash at Arch Brown Reserve will inject the belief that they can match it with the best, and more importantly, stay right up to their necks in the race for the Turf 1 flag.

After setting the powerful Bucks’ batsmen 263 for victory after Nathan Pilon’s 79 the previous weekend, a lot would need to go right to contain the visitors.

Daniel Watson (23) looked ominous early, but he fell first after being trapped LBW by Cory Bevan (4/48), and from there, opener Jayson Hobbs also fell shortly after leaving the visitors 2/41.

Fresh off a freakish Twenty20 century only days earlier, captain-coach David White (48) picked up where he left off, riding the momentum of the home side to consolidate the innings with fellow star Greg Todd (30).

After copping some tap early, rising young spinner Isaiah Jassal (1/23) snared arguably the most important wicket of the match, breaking through the gates of White to send him packing only a few runs away from a half century, and for only the fourth time in nine innings in the DDCA. Brendan Rose (1/34) struck shortly after, snaring Todd, before the Bears - courtesy of a ripping spell through the middle from Bevan saw the visitors slump to 8/154.

Despite another youngster in Zarak Aseel (20) giving the visitors a glimmer of hope late, the Bears rallied to consolidate their spot in fourth by finishing them off on 190, in what could be a decisive victory as they look to shore up a finals spot in the coming weeks.

The top-eight clash - a perfect indicator of exactly where the Swans where at - didn't get off to the most perfect start - with Uni openers Michael Clements (66) and Fergus McKenna (48) getting to lunch unscathed and with over 100 runs on the board.

Returning to the side, James Maxwell (4/59) finally broke through, and McKenna soon fell after, with keeper Dev Pollock gratefully accepting a chance to give Maxwell a second wicket.

But Uni dug in, with a series of partnerships through the middle from skipper James McNeil (52), Alex Gregory (56) and Tom Rogers (34) helping launch a massive total.

The Swans fought back - with spinner Lachie Sperling (3/76) rewarded for his efforts to work his way through the middle order - but it was the left-armer Maxwell that did the most damage, finishing with the impressive figures

of 4/59 in his 19 overs in what is his fifth first XI match at the level.

Uni were eventually bowled out for 332, giving the Swans a big ask, but one that is not beyond them, as shown by a recent two-day fixture against Dandenong which resulted in a draw.

With the form of the likes of Luke Wells, and a batting side filled with depth in Ryan Quirk, Jordan Wyatt, Lachie Sperling, Ryan Eaton, Michael Wallace and Devin Pollock, the Swans will fancy their chances of giving the chase an almighty shake.

In the seconds, meanwhile, lost the Saturday-Sunday fixture to Uni, with Andrej Yaksender blasting an unbeaten century.

The Swans racked up 284 off 92.2 overs on day one, with Joel Mitchell returning from his stint in the ones to compile 85 off 133 overs, with Aaron Bardwell (87) also falling close to a century after coming in at 4/177.

Father and son dominate

CRANBOURNE BOWLS A late change to the Cranbourne ladies Division 1 line-up to replace two skips made the task a little harder, but the team depth got them through to win by five shots playing away at Glen Waverley. Meanwhile, playing at home in the club men's pairs championship final, the father and son combination of Joe and Frank Byrne won a thriller during the week. Due to the Australia Day celebrations on Saturday, no pennant bowls were played this weekend.

For the Ladies Division 1, selectors were forced to make a few changes before the game started at the last minute with two skips unable to play. The game started well with the Cranbourne ladies side getting to a 10-shot lead at the lunch break and were playing some very good bowls, but they knew that Glen Waverley would make a late charge.

In the end it was very close but with some good tight bowls it was victory to Cranbourne by five shots. Lead Maree Taylor played some excellent bowls during the day and played her best game of the year that kept her side within reach. Skip Lynne Wood was simply outstanding with excellent support from her side consisting of Maureen Cameron, Joyce Pearce, and Joy McLisky, winning by 12 shots which made sure of overall victory. A six-shot win was recorded by Skip Lois Brock and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Gwen Scott and Sandra Mueller who also had a good day.

Next week Cranbourne takes on 2nd side Edithvale playing away with the winner to take top spot on the ladder.

Cranbourne Ladies 63 (14 points) defeated Glen Waverley 58.

MID-WEEK BOWLS RESULTS Cranbourne 2 Division 2 open 43 (0 points) lost to Dandenong Club 61.

Cranbourne 3 Division 3 open 51 (2 points) lost to Cranbourne RSL 59.

Cranbourne 4 six-a-side open had a bye.

An exciting game took place in the club men's pairs final with Frank and Joe Byrne playing against Doug Boggie and Ian Barrenger. Skip Frank Byrne and his father Joe Byrne got off to a good start but Doug and Ian closed the gap late in the game and certainly had their chances to win.

The game went down to the wire and on the last end, the father and son combination of Joe and Frank Byrne were crowned victors and club champions.

One of the crowd supporters asked Frank who was the better bowler in the family; he replied with a big smile, "Well dad always thinks he is."

Congratulations to both finalists.

BERWICK On January 20, for the fifth time, Berwick Bowling Club hosted the Bowls Vic Integrated Pairs event. There were 42 teams (representing 30 clubs) competing and a great day was had by all. Many thanks must go to the organising committee of Mark Walker, Kay Crook and Jean Fothergill. In all, there were 33 Berwick members helping out on the day to make the event a success.

Present on the day were members of the Board of Bowls Victoria who acknowledged the wonderful facilities and expressed their gratitude for Berwick's support of the event.

The annual Australia Day Skins tournament was a great success on Saturday with 48 sides playing three bowl pairs in a two end skins format.

NARRE WARREN Due to the Australia Day holiday there was no Saturday pennant last week. On Tuesday, Division 2 played at Fountain Gate against Edithvale and claimed a win. Eric Sydenham, Willma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Brent Hone had a nice win 24-18, while Wally Finlayson, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar won 23-22. This was off-set by Reg Young, Judy Naughton, Arthur Scheurer and Wilma Stevenson who just went down 19-18.

Narre Warren (1) 14-65 defeated Edithvale (2) 2-59.

Division 3 travelled to Keysborough to play Dandenong RSL-Rec. Stan Bulmer, Pam Uren, Alan Mark and Geoff Ampt had a nice win 2415, while Pauline Kempf, Paull McNamara, Keith Mark and Peter Groom just went down 22-20. The trio of Arthur Fitt, Enid Gibb and Philip Howard were always going to have trouble against a four, losing 31-9.

Narre Warren (2) 2-53 lost to Dandenong RSL-Rec (1) 14-68.

The six-a-side team were also at Fountain Gate against Pakenham. Susan Hawkins, Jeanette Cox and Glen Cadman just went down 23-21 and Len O'Brien, Peter Wilson and Jac-

Narre Warren (3) 0-36 lost to Pakenham (4) 14-44.

With only five games before finals, Narre Warren has a chance for three of the seven teams to play finals.

In mid-week competition, Division 2 are sitting in fourth place. Division 3 are in ninth place and will need to win to beat the relegation battle. The six-a-side team are eighth of

the nine teams but have won more games than last season, which is a good sign.

In Saturday play, Division 3 are second on the ladder, but will need to keep winning for a home final, while Division 4 are fourth and will need to keep their form to play finals. Division 5 are eighth and a couple more wins against teams below them will keep them in the Division. Division 7 are ninth.
