Nominees for the Cardinia Shire Australia Day Awards 2019 have been announced. Cardinia Shire Council will proudly announce the winners of the Awards at the community Australia Day event at 11am Saturday 26 January, at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, 40 Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham. Pastry pick-up By Rowan Forster The closure of Simplot has officially been confirmed, with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union on Wednesday revealing the iconic Pakenham warehouse has been sold to Pacific Equity Partners - resulting in the turnover of an entire workforce. More than 125 workers are expected to lose their jobs as a result of Simplot's withdrawal. On 29 March, Bairnsdale-based Patties Pies will seize operations at the plant, marking the end of a five-decade era but the beginning of another. Patties is the corporation behind the beloved Four'N Twenty pie, one of Australia's most renowned pastries.

After announcing the proposed closure, Simplot Australia have released a statement, saying the proposal was part of a strategic decision to exit from the frozen meals category to concentrate on its core capabilities in potatoes, vegetable, seafood, pasta and sauces. The site was formerly owned and occupied by Nestle, which opened early in the 1960s. In 2009, the company bowed out of the facility, selling to the American-owned Simplot. Since 1995, Simplot has acquired some of Australia's best-known food brand businesses including Edgell, Chiko, Birds Eye, Harvest, Plumrose, and Leggos.

The AMWU anticipates that almost all of the current workers will be made redundant, but is optimistic that some will be offered positions with the new company. Live play at Wilson park Up to 400 people attended the Saturday Night Live at the Park event at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick (WBPB), last weekend. The tireless work of some dedicated volunteers helped ensure this event was a great success, as guests sat back and listened to tunes by Joshua Tooth. Saturday Night Live events are becoming well renowned throughout the City of Casey, with local families bringing groups of friends along for an easy Saturday evening out with the kids. The community are encouraged to bring their own picnic and drinks to the activation. The next instalment will occur on Saturday 9 February 2019 with entertainment by Alex Reid Music from 6.30pm. Footy fun with the Dees There were plenty of thrills, skills and drills when more than 260 kids joined Melbourne Football Club's (MFC) women's teams for a day of football fun on Saturday 12 January. The Dees' AFLW and VFLW players hosted a free junior clinic at Casey's premier sporting precinct, Casey Fields, following an open training session and practice match earlier in the day. The children were put through their paces in a variety of games and drills, learning from stars of the women's competitions. Participants in the clinic were aged from three to 16-years-old with majority being female, highlighting the impact the AFLW competition has had on the sport. The sun was shining, Daisy the mascot was in attendance and there were giveaways and opportunities for player autographs. The City of Casey and MFC proudly formed a 30-year partnership in 2009 and since then have been working together to promote and engage the community in sport, create talent
pathways and provide unique opportunities for residents such as the AFLW Junior Clinic. The women's team have three home games at Casey Fields as part of their AFLW season, on Sunday 3 February, Sunday 24 February and Saturday 16 March. With free entry, plenty of children's activities and prizes to be won, head along and cheer on Casey's affiliated club for a great afternoon out. The men's team also have a match at Casey Fields, where they'll take on the Brisbane Lions on Saturday 9 March in week two of the AFL JLT Community Series. This will be a ticketed event, with tickets available at Ticketmaster. Council and MFC will also be hosting the Summer of Family Fun night at Bunjil Place on Wednesday 13 February from 4.30 - 6pm. There will be free entertainment, activities, chances to meet and challenge players in some fun games, face painting and much more. Police set sights on reckless behaviour Casey and Cardinia Highway Patrol teamed up for a traffic operation targeting drink and drug driving in the vicinity of fast food outlets on Saturday January 12. During the operation a total of 57 vehicles were intercepted and requested to do preliminary breath tests, two of which returned a positive reading. A total of 47 drivers were given a preliminary oral fluid test, with four returning a posi-
tive reading. A total of 21 penalty notices were issued. The final intercept of the operation particularly baffled members - a 56 year old driver was observed driving into a curb and almost hitting a sign. He returned an evidentiary breath test reading of 0.190 and his oral fluid test returned a positive result to cannabis. The driver reported that he had driven all
the way from Wonthaggi. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was issued a Section 51 notice - immediately suspending his driver's licence. The driver will be summonsed to appear at court. It is a reminder to everyone to be safe on the road and call 000 if you see someone driving erratically.

They’re ready for robotics By Jessica Anstice Harkaway Primary School students will be heading over to America to represent Australia at a global robotics event in April this year. The school bought a VEX IQ Robot using a VEX IQ grant and $500 the students' earnt by volunteering at the Berwick Show earlier last year. VEX IQ is a plastic snap together construction system tailored for primary and middle school students to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning. From there, the schools VEX IQ Robotics Team used an old table tennis table to practice on. Throughout the year, the team of students were competing and winning against much older, secondary school students. After competing in Australia's signature ro-

botics event held at the Convention Centre in Melbourne, students from Harkaway Primary School were selected to compete at the National Championships in Kentucky. Over the two days, they were competing with schools from all around Australia and were among the youngest competitors there. In fact, we were the only state primary school at the event. Their section of the competition had more than 20 teams. "This is a significant achievement given that we only started this year, had no way near the resourcing most other schools had, and we were up against mostly secondary school teams," Harkaway Primary School principal Leigh Johnson said. "Ultimately, it is not about the technology, it is all about people working together to problem solve and create unique solutions that help shape their world."

What is something people don't know about you? I've done volunteer work throughout different organisations for the last 33 years. I started when I was 11 years old. I can also speak Slovenian. It's priceless seeing people's faces when they have never heard me speak another language. What was your most memorable moment? When both my children were born but also when I've helped two people when I was with St John Ambulance and receiving two thank you cards from both families. One was a newborn that had febrile convolutions and had turned blue on the lips and face and the other from parents of a teenage girl that almost died and almost got brain damage from drinking loads of spirits. Where did you grow up as a child? I was born in Whyalla, South Australia; where the outback meets the sea. What is your favourite movie? Shawshank Redemption, Enemy at the Gates and The Power of One. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was PM for the day I would award my partner Michelle Oakley Mother of the Year because she has always gone above and beyond and looking after the whole family and taking our three year old son Lucas for his regular chemo treatment. Also the parents Pam and Andrew Oakley and my mum Josephine Schafer for the Grandparents of the Year award for helping myself and Michelle out when Lucas has gone in for treatment. At school I...... Get a school routine going early. Summertime schedules are often different than school year schedules, and there's nothing wrong with that. Children do well with routines though, so establishing a school routine early is important. A week before school starts get the children used to waking up at a certain time every day and going to bed at a reasonable time.

Prepare for back to school emotions. Sometimes young children deal with separation anxiety when back to school time rolls around and those feelings are normal. Consider reading up on separation anxiety and how to ease it. Most importantly, you know your child best and you know how to address their concerns.

Get appropriate supplies and gear for your children. Your child's school will likely have a list, so be sure to refer to that. Many schools also have small lists of items to not bring to school. It will help the teachers and students if those lists are adhered to.

Police probe grass fire
St John’s birthday Celebrations were held on Friday 18 January to commemorate the first birthday of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital. The first baby born at the new hospital, Andy Gaspardis, celebrated his first birthday as a special guest at the evening event. In the year since the award winning hospital opened, the team have accomplished much to be celebrated. "Years of meticulous planning resulted in our beautiful new hospital which has been a huge success," hospital CEO Lisa Norman said. "It's been incredibly satisfying to watch as our dreams come to life and offer our community an enhanced health care service. "Additional beds have allowed us to double the number of patients we can care for and new services have allowed us to offer a more complex range of health care." New services have included the opening of the first Intensive Care Unit in the region, which allows the hospital to accept more complex surgical and medical patients and care for them closer to home. The introduction of cardiac services has enabled doctors to insert cardiac stents and pacemakers in the low dose Siemens catheter laboratory. A new Rehabilitation Unit gives patients recovering from surgery, illness or trauma the opportunity to recover and regain strength, under the same roof as where they underwent surgery or medical treatment. Now employing over 700 caregivers with accreditation for over 560 doctors, a recruitment campaign saw over 300 new employees join the workforce as the hospital grew from an 82 bed campus with four operating theatres to a multi-level 202 bed hospital with eight operating theatres and six birth suites. The hospital also invested in a number of new medical technologies, with the acquisition of a Holmium Laser (MOSES) so that

I was interested to read the story “Among state’s best” beside the picture on the front page of this week’s Cranbourne Star News, but I wondered what the ‘Imitative of the Year Award’ was about, and what they were ‘imitating’ ? Turning to page 7 as instructed, I learned that the award was for Local Government Initiative in Sport - which I do understand, and well done to the City of Casey for catering for youth sport. Incidentally, many years ago, I played cricket at Catani with a Noel Duyvestyn - and I think he had a wife called Elaine. Maybe she is the lady who is being considered for an award for her contribution to softball? I only bump into Noel very occasionally these days. Then I read the "In brief” column on page 3, only to find that the first story about a P plate driver being clocked at 188 km/h is also the third story. Was it a slow week in local crime? With regard to your story “Outrage over parking fines’ (Berwick Star News, Thursday, 17 January). How can the parking signs be confusing or deceiving, when they clearly state that there are 'no stopping’ restrictions from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday? If you choose to disobey a parking sign, by either stopping or parking in this area, then you deserve to be caught and fined! It is not an excuse to say that others do it, so I’m going to as well. Ignorance is no excuse! Kangan Drive is, at the best of times, a narrow and congested roadway and clearly, Casey Council has decided to make it safer during these peak times, for all road users. When the giving won't stop Gethsemane Church Charity in Berwick stayed open right through the Christmas break - including on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. When the La-Brooy family sat down to their Christmas lunch it was way into the evening, nevertheless Kerrigan, his wife Michelle and their six children, had never felt happier and more content. "We believe people need help and food particularly at this time of the year, so we didn't want to shut our doors for even a single day," Mr La-Brooy said. "Although our hours of operation are 12 to 2pm, we welcomed community members 24/7 - all they had to do was knock on our door. "We ensured our 'holiday' didn't infringe on people's needs. Plus, it was our way of fulfilling the true meaning of Christmas." Around 400 people benefit daily from Gethsemane Church Charity. During the Christmas season this number doubled. In addition to hosting the Clyde Carols by Candlelight, Gethsemane went house-tohouse carolling. This included retirement villages and nursing homes where the inhabitants and staff

Carley Chippet attended the Hampton Park Carols by Candlelight and became unresponsive on December 14. During this time, Ms Chippet was unable to move or respond to anybody around her; however she was still able to hear people surrounding her. During this stressful encounter, she was not able to put a face to the voices that were talking to her and being touched was very anxiety inducing. Fortunately, there were two St John Ambulance first-aiders nearby that were able to assist her and calm her down. This encounter solidifies the importance of St John Ambulance's services and how well re-

Gethsemane seeks to expand its territory because they've enlarged the site of their home and stretched their curtains wide, with barely enough space to operate. They're hopeful they'll be funded in some way to acquire a warehouse and other necessities where they can continue their charitable services.

All in for track attack By Jessica Anstice Casey BMX Club hosted the final round of Track Attack 2019 on Sunday 20 January. Over 400 riders took to the track to compete for placings in a six race over nine days event including some international riders and clubs from right across Australia. There was some fierce competition across the nine days and the newly formed Casey BMX Club had 25 riders compete to end with some incredible results. The club members and supporters are looking forward to their next big event hosting the BMXV State titles later in the year. Supporting studies Getting into university can be tough. What to study, where to study it, what is work going to be like once all the study is over? For a young adult in high school, the information on offer can be overwhelming. Doxa's University Pathways Program is a multi-year, multi-touchpoint program that provides students with first-hand experience of university life and a taste of the world of work. Five Fountain Gate Secondary College students participated in the program, including Year 12 student Jagdeep Singh. "I found out about Doxa through my school; I love the program because it's so insightful and you get so many opportunities," he said. "You get many free opportunities to get an insight into university pathways and it's an extremely social program. "Through participating in Doxa's University Pathways Program we get to know about all these different pathways and career opportunities. We are always one step ahead of the average student, which is always good because you have more time to prepare yourself and don't have to rush into decisions." Mr Singh said he is interested in studying biology. "It's my favourite field of science. I'm looking at going to Melbourne or Monash but after visiting ACU with Doxa, it's an option too," he said. It supports young people to attend university and gain the skills for an employable and rewarding future. Participants in the program come from a variety of challenging backgrounds. Everyone is different, but this could be financial difficulty, family trauma, being culturally and/or linguistically diverse, being from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background, or a refugee and/or migrant background. Students in Year 12 from around Victoria including Geelong, Gippsland and across Melbourne recently took part in two University Pathways Program sessions. Students developed their personal, professional and employment skills by visiting universities and corporate workplaces across Mel-
bourne CBD including BT and ACU University. They also met professionals from across the not-for-profit sector in a NFP round robin session. Since its inception in 2015, more than 800 young people have participated in the Doxa University Pathways Program. Doxa CEO, Steve Clifford, said, "At Doxa, we offer support for young people from challenging life circumstances and give them opportunities they may not otherwise have access to. "We offer invaluable networking opportunities, and develop students' enterprise, employment and personal skills that will help them succeed in university and in the workplace." A first for the hospital, the new orthopaedic unit will open in February and is currently recruiting compassionate caregivers to join its growing team. The fourth-floor ward has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation; however, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s south-east. Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Volunteers from the Endeavour Hills Men's Shed spent a day encouraging children to discover facts, learn all about plants and get creative with paint and woodwork in the Endeavour Hills Town Square.
A Clyde North tradie has been left reeling after CCTV captured the moment two brazen thieves allegedly stole his trailer during the early hours of Monday, 14 January. Plasterer Stuart Webster had parked his trailer overnight at the front of his home on Reflections Boulevard. Footage captured two men pulling up in a ute, one carrying what appears to be a pair of bolt cutters as they blatantly approached his trailer about 4.30am. One of the bandits is seen cutting a lock on the tow ball before one wheels the trailer to the ute. It took less than two minutes for the culprits to hook up the trailer and drive off. Mr Webster, 40, took to social media, appealing for anyone with information and to alert others on Facebook's Casey Crime Page. "I've had a good response from the Casey Crime Page," he said. "People were messaging
my inbox - I have been given three names and two addresses which I have forwarded onto police," he said. The trailer is described as a 6x4 charcoal box trailer, worth $1,500. Mr Webster said it was a huge inconvenience as he lost a day's work. "I had to go around and get new tools ... it was $1,700 and that's not even everything. "I borrowed a trailer off someone for the time being while I go through the insurance," he said. Tools taken were a screw gun, T-squares, trestles, planks, stilts, hammers, battery chargers, batteries, and more. Mr Webster believes the culprits live nearby given the hour of the day. "Maybe they've seen it, you know, drove past," Cranbourne Police confirmed the theft and is investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Panthers surging forward By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes WGCA PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - ROUND 10 Devon Meadows emerged as the big winners of the round, surging into fourth spot, displacing Tooradin after a barnstorming victory against Upper Beaconsfield. The Panthers taught the Maroons a stern lesson after winning the toss and electing to bat. Contributions from Luke Hamilton (42) and Kyle Salerno (30) saw the home side reach an imposing 214. While the Maroons battled to contain the firepower of the Panthers, Kyle Gibbs (2/20) and Daniel Brennan (2/35) finished with impressive figures. The Maroons were unable to recover after their 2/13 start, with Dodd (3/20), Lucas Carroll (2/9) and O'Connor (2/18) doing a fine job, rattling through the visitors for just 94. Tooradin was stunned by an excellent bowling display from Kooweerup quick Tiron Fernando (4/27), who helped the visitors restrict the home side to just 9/126. Mark Cooper's side were dealt with a couple of early wickets, but young guns Tyler Clark (44 not out) and Mitch Cammarano (36 not out) showed great poise to help guide the Demons to a comfortable six-wicket win. Pakenham stamped their authority with a brilliant performance against a struggling Cardinia - the Bulls were resigned to their third straight defeat. The Lions bowled superbly, rolling the visitors for just 90, with Troy McDermott (4/21) in fine touch. It took a mere 63 balls for the Lions to claim victory, with Ben Maroney (69) guiding the home side to a comfortable victory. Clyde defeated Merinda Park at home to continue to place pressure on the top four. After sending the Cobras in, Nick Sadler (1/23) shattered the stumps of Daniel McCalman off just the second ball of the match and the visitors soon found themselves 7/69 after Matt Aslett (5/27) tore through the middle order. A brilliant 69-run stand from Leigh Paterson (48) and Mathew Campbell (49) for the 10th wicket saw the Cobras somehow reach 177. The Cougars couldn't have got off to a worse start, losing Brett Reid, John Simpson and Daniel Walton in the opening overs to be 3/5, but skipper Kiefer Peries (40) got the innings back on track. Jason Hameeteman (61) and Kane Avard (60) brought the target within reach. A massive six from Sadler eventually secured the Cougars the points in the final over of the match. DISTRICT DIVISION Cranbourne Meadows' perfect season continued in round 10, easily accounting for Tooradin. The Rebels (6/268) were led by Sibghat Ullah (52) and Kulith Rabel (46 not out) and had the Seagulls on the back foot all innings. Tooradin (7/176) got strong middle order contributions from David Freeman (37) and Ned Harrison (33), but their run rate was never going to be enough. NNG/Maryknoll scored a win over Cardinia. The Bulls chose to bat first and would immediately regret that decision, losing two wickets before getting off the mark as Dean Henwood (3/18) did the damage early and the Bulls could only muster a total of 146 as Travis Gray (4/31) ran riot. In reply, the Marygoons - despite losing early wickets - claimed the win as Scott Hayes (64 not out) led NNG/Maryknoll (6/148). A Mitchell Copey masterclass led Emerald (5/268) to a big win over Clyde (177). The Bomber opener was simply dominant as he smashed his way to 108 off 107 balls, including 16 fours and a six. Copey combined with Mark Alenson (45) for a 116-run stand. In reply, Clyde had batsmen get off to starts - led by Warwick Weir (45) and Zac Davis (32) but it wasn't enough as Sam Stapleton (3/31) and Ashley Hill (3/35) claimed key wickets. The Yabbies won the toss at home and elected to bat, and incredibly they found themselves reeling at 3/1 as Tyler Molloy (2/18) claimed early wickets. The Cats didn't let up and dismissed the Yabbies for just 99 runs in 33 overs. Dustin Peebles (4/23) continued his dominant form with another fine eight overs of bowling. Just as he did last week, Peebles backed up his great bowl ing with a sublime knock with the bat. His 47 runs led Catani to a win as they reached the target in the 29th over for the loss of seven wickets. Nicholas Kyval (4/13) did all he could for the Yabbies, but it wasn't enough. Lang Lang and Kooweerup played out an intense and high-quality game, which ultimately resulted in a win for the Tigers. Kooweerup batted first and an unbeaten half century from Ayden Mills (56 not out) saved the Demons innings from disaster as he helped his team to a total of 8/170. Glen Easton (2/17) and Joseph Dalgleish (2/32) led the way for Lang Lang. In reply, Lang Lang lost early wickets, but Chris Brew (42) and Rajind Dassanyake (39) steadied the innings. With just two wickets in hand and three deliveries to spare, the Tigers reached the required runs, posting a total of 8/172 to record a memorable win. Jai Lewis (2/19) was the pick of Kooweerup's bowlers. Merinda Park easily accounted for Pakenham in a result that keeps things extremely interesting in the run home towards finals. Reeling at 3/19, the Lions were unable to recover their innings, despite a spirited half century from Mitch Tielen (57), as they struggled their way to a total of 8/121. Swans continue fine form By Nick Creely "I don't think we've put together a complete package of a performance yet, with both bat, ball and in the field, yet we're still winning games." Casey-South Melbourne skipper Luke Wells certainly has the confidence that the Swans can knock over anyone on their day, and when his group does fully gel, look out. The seventh placed Swans landed yet another scalp on Saturday, further reinforcing their stunning improvement by putting together their most "professional" performance of the year against Northcote at Bill Lawry Oval. Off the back of their gun skipper - who compiled another stellar 87 off 112 balls - the Swans won the toss and posted a healthy 8/227 off their 50 overs on a slow pitch. The Swans got off to a bright start by compiling 42 for the first wicket, but consistent wickets dented their progress, before a late charge from Wells, Jordan Wyatt (23) and Devin Pollock (26) got the visitors into a defendable position. But it was with the ball that Wells' group once again impressed, defending their modest total for the second week in a row to restrict the Dragons to 221 after bowling them out in the final over of the day. In a stunningly even bowling effort, Jackson Fry (2/53) removed dangerous openers Solomon Mire (21) and Mark Phelan (55), Josh Dowling (2/55) did a fine job through the middle to continue his great season, while spinners Lachie Sperling (2/37) and Wells (1/35) each kept things tight too, and managed to snare three wickets between them. But, once again, spearhead Nathan Lambden's (3/36) brilliant form came to the fore, finishing off the game like gun bowlers do, to surge into 12th on the Premier Cricket wicket list. The big quick now has 20 wickets at 22.9, with an impressive strike rate of 33.5 "I feel like he's made a lot of progress, and he's adapting his game to conditions really well," Wells said of Lambden's season.
"For example on the weekend, the pitch was particularly suited to slower balls, so for a guy who wants to bowl as fast as he can, he bowled a load of slower balls, and got the rewards." After another close win - one that sees them move to a 7-3 record and within five points of Melbourne Uni in fourth - Wells praised the bowlers for their performance, and said that the recent close victories and the ability to defend any score is pleasing. "It's been good, and pretty stressful, I wouldn't mind a low maintenance, less stressful win, but we've defended well so far in the oneday stuff," he said with a chuckle. "We've got reasonable totals together without necessarily getting a match-winning one, so we've worked hard to defend those scores around the 230 mark - we've got a good blueprint at the moment, Nathan Lambden and Jacko Fry have bowled well up top, Josh Dowling as first change seamer has been good, and Lachie (Sperling) and myself have both been pretty economical. "I feel like the guys are learning a lot - although (Saturday) it was tight, I felt that we were the most professional while I've been out here, to be fair. It's been really pleasing." Wells said that the Swans will only get better as the red-ball cricket starts to heat up again, and can't wait to see what his group can produce in the back-end of the season. "We're a really talented group, and winning's a habit, and so is losing, so the guys just expect to win, and they know what they need to do to win," he said. "We've taken down some top teams - we beat Fitzroy, almost beat Dandenong in a two-dayer, beat St Kilda and other sides, and it proves that on our day, we can beat anyone in the league. "I'm looking forward to getting into the twoday stuff, we've played a lot of one-day cricket - I feel like we're potentially a better two-day outfit." The Swans will travel to take on Melbourne Uni on Saturday for a two-day game, in a massive clash for both sides.

Storm finishes year on a high Gippsland Storm Elite Development Netball Club had their second season finals just before the Christmas break to conclude the 2018 season on a high, with six of the seven teams making finals. The Open team made it to the semi-final but came up against a tough opponent who didn't give them an inch. The under 13 and all under 15 teams made it through to the Grand Finals which was an amazing effort in itself. The under 13 team battled hard and were only a couple of goals difference at every change but in the end they finished as runners up. The 15 and under two and four teams, both
claimed big scalps in their semi-finals but they played out of their comfort zone, couldn't settle in the Grand Final, both finishing as runners up. The 15 and under one and two squads for Storm, both controlled their games from start to finish and came away as Grand Final winners. Head coach, Simon O'Shanassy said all teams did the club proud in what was a record, with having so many teams from Storm making the finals at the Waverly Netball Centre, competing against some of the best junior tournament squads in Melbourne.
