Detectives arrested and charged a man following a house fire in Ferntree Gully on Friday 18 January.

Police said the fire broke out in the Veronica Street home about 1.30am and caused extensive damage to the property.

No-one was home at the time.

Croydon detectives charged a 28-year-old

man from no fixed address with criminal damage by fire, reckless conduct endangering life and resisting police.

The fire, which fully engulfed the house, came only days after a man died in a shed fire in Ferntree Gully.

Residents reported seeing flames flowing out of the roof in the latest blaze.

People may recall last year there was a photo of Casey MP Tony Smith and others standing in front of the Monbulk Police Station after the announcement of the extension of CCTV in the Main Street.

Now, Mr Smith is our local federal member, so why is he announcing funds for local projects?

Now it has been revealed in the letters to the Age that the Federal Government has a large fund (read pork-barrelling) for keeping local communities on side.

Nowhere was there an announcement from the Yarra Ranges Shire inviting people to comment.

Purely by chance I saw the farreaching possibly of CCTV in China, on Foreign Correspondent.

Not a good look.

Democracy is compromised when any government, Labor or Liberal, try to buy favour without first having extensive consultation with the local community.

So, where to from here?

Firstly, is there a public register at the police station of every person, including police, who have watched the CCTV footage and for what reason?

So can we get it right, that all persons watching the CCTV or taking prints from it their names need to be recorded so that the public can see what is going on in our local communities without our knowledge.

Honk for humanity The eclectic village of Belgrave is known for its unique cafes, music venues, a wizard, and of course Puffing Billy.

Though, over the last year a new dynamic has been added and every Saturday between 11am and midday hundreds of vehicles traversing the Belgrave roundabout will beep in support of the few women who are protesting against offshore detention.

Since November 2017 the small group of local women have congregated at the roundabout with signs which say 'Honk for Humanity,' 'Bring them Here,' 'Justice 4 Refugees,' 'Shut Down Manus and Nauru,' and 'Kids Off All Off'.

The group was created in response to the Manus siege in 2017 when Manus Island was decomissioned, leaving many refugees without a place to stay.

"In November 2017 was when the Manus siege was happening and there were 700 men who had refused to leave the compound at Manu Regional Processing Centre as they were worried about their safety," said Margaret Sinclair a primary school teacher from Belgrave, who has taken up protesting at Belgrave roundabout.

"At that stage an organisation in the hills called kindred organised a meeting at grunge cafe and spoke about what was happening on Manus ... we took our protest signs up to the Cameo and back again looking for a spot where the most motorists would see the signs.

"We ended up on the roundabout itself, holding signs calling for justice and for the human rights of these refugees to be upheld and respected."

Those women are still protesting, albeit

Since November 2017 a small group of local women have been protesting against offshore and onshore detention at Belgrave roundabout. have moved from being on the roundabout to a safer location beside it.

Prue Licht, a Belgrave resident and a retired social worker told the Mail that that the response has been largely positive.

She said each week a clicker is taken to monitor the response from motorists, and some weeks they receive over 400 positive responses within one hour.

"It's been hugely successful," Prue said.

"We're a bit of a fixture now and people expect to see us ... we get lots of toots and waves and the occasional obscenity.

"We've had bus drivers, tradies, people on motorbikes, mums and dads, older people,

and P platers ... It's a really good cross section of the community."

The group are unsure of what the future holds but are committed to continuing the protest until offshore and onshore detention is addressed.

Margaret said that if the government fail to address the issue at the next election, it's likely that they'll continue to protest.

"We've all definitely made a decision to keep going until the next election and then after that will see," she said.

"If they address it properly then there's no need for us to keep protesting, but if there isn't any change I think we're committed enough to keep going."

Talking trees

By Derek Schlennstedt Thump! Out of nowhere on a quiet and hot afternoon, a gum tree drops a large branch across Belgrave-Gembrook road in Menzies Creek, halting traffic.

Fortunately, no one was driving under the branch when it came down, but the incident is still unnerving, and makes anyone living in a rural area question the stability of the trees that line many of the roads in the Dandenong Ranges.

Ian Robins from cockatoo shares that concern and in a letter to the editor said that more needs to be done to reduce dangerous trees.

Mr Robins said he has seen a number of trees fall onto roads over the past few weeks, specifically along Wellington Road, and Belgrave-Gembrook road.

"A few years ago, I witnessed a young driver have her car severely damaged when a tree with a rotten base fell across part of the road immediately in front of her.

"Fortunately, the damage was limited to the vehicle.

"In recent weeks two trees fell- one onto the road and another to the shoulder of the road."

Burglar bogged An alleged thief got bogged during his attempted escape following a Monbulk burglary.

Police arrested the Melton man, 36, on Mt Dandenong Tourist Road on 10 January.

They said a woman was bringing in bins for her neighbour, who was on holidays, about 9.20am when she spotted a blue BMW in the driveway and the front door open.

She called out and received no answer, but heard banging noises and called police.

Police said the charged man drove out of the driveway and into the driveway of the home opposite.

It's alleged he drove at speed for 30 metres, skidded into a parked car and became bogged while trying to drive through the back fence.

Police recovered jewellery, medication and a handbag from the Monbulk home inside the car.

The car itself was reported stolen from Richmond.

They charged the man with burglary, theft, theft of a motor car, driving in a dangerous manner and possessing ammunition.

He was remanded to face court at a later date.

Police said the man was also wanted over burglaries in Gisborne.

Call to slow down Police have responded to two motorcycle accidents over the past week and are urging riders to slow down and ride within their skill level.

At about 12.45pm on Wednesday 16 January, a 19-year-old learner motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle on Mountain Highway, Sassafras.

Police said the bike hit a car travelling in the opposite direction. The car did not strike the rider.

The car's driver immediately stopped and rendered assistance.

The rider was taken to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.

Speed, drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors.

On 20 January at 2.30pm, a motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with serious leg injuries after he lost control along GembrookLaunching Place Road and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Concerns are being raised over overhanging trees along roads in the Dandenong Ranges.

Mr Robins raised the problem to VicRoads, but it was only after a clearly hollow tree fell opposite Clematis pub that he was given a prompt response.

He said that initially VicRoads responded to his concerns by stating that 'there was no immediate hazard.'

"This tree was hollow and a visual inspection should have shown it to be in poor health and a risk."

"People living in the area will be familiar with the unpredictable nature of many tree species and the need for constant monitoring of their condition ... . they need to be monitored and checked to make sure they are safe."

"That being said since I raised it VicRoads have been more proactive."

"I value the trees along road reserves and don't want to see trees removed without strong reasons, equally, I don't want to see serious accidents caused by trees which have a limited future."

Knox Police are looking to reunite a drone with its owner, lost around the Ferntree Gully area in October last year.

To claim the drone, the owner will need to identify areas where the drone had been flown.

Parking argument.

Police are seeking information about damages to a car parked in Belgrave, following an altercation between its owner and another person.

At 9.40am on 19 January a car was legally parked in a disabled car park outside the Commonwealth Bank in Belgrave.

Police said a passer-by commented on the parking and an argument ensued.

The driver returned to their car later to find scratches in the panels.

Thanks for the opportunity In the lead up to the 2018 Victorian election I spoke to a lot of people across the electorate of Monbulk about why I wanted to continue as their local member.

For me, it was about ensuring our community continues to have the facilities and services it deserves.

This is the community that I have chosen to raise my family in and I want them, and every child in our community, to have every opportunity available to them.

I want to take this chance to thank each and every resident who gave me the opportunity to continue working on that goal.

I'm genuinely excited about the next four years.

The state of

affairs James Merlino MP Member for Monbulk Locally, I can't wait to see work on upgrades to Monbulk College and Upwey High School, and start work on an exciting upgrade at Monbulk Primary.

It isn't just schools either, we will see work

on major upgrades at Pinks Reserve begin and the construction of the much-needed car park at the Belgrave Train Station.

There are also so many other initiatives that I can't wait to see rolled out across the state.

I want to highlight one that is close to my heart in particular - the implementation of universal three-year-old kinder.

It is an initiative I am very proud to see our government deliver.

We will invest $5 billion over the next decade to deliver a full 15 hours of three-year-old kinder, with the rollout beginning in 2020.

Once completed, this will be the largest social, economic and educational reform ever undertaken in early childhood learning in Vic-

toria's history.

We want our kids to be ready for school and with this extra year of kinder we'll make sure they are.

It sits alongside several big state-wide announcements that say a lot about the government we want to be.

Whether it is providing free dental to Victorian school kids or building the Suburban Rail Loop, we want to leave this state a better place for future generations.

Thank you again for giving me that opportunity.

Work has begun to improve the car park at the Upwey-Belgrave RSL. When finished RSL members will benefit from a sealed car park, improved drive way and better stormwater drainage.

The project was announced in September last year with the state labor government committing $100,000 to upgrade the RSL's parking arrangements.

Works will include a concrete kerb and channel, internal and external underground stormwater drain, a wider driveway entrance to the car park, asphalt surfacing and line marking.

Upwey-Belgrave RSL President David Eaton said members were looking forward to the upgrade which will provide better access for everyone including those using wheelchairs and walkers.

"We're trying to improve social isolation issues with the veterans and the elderly and trying to get more people to visit the sub-branch here in Upwey."

"We arrange for morning teas and social activities to take place here so it will be wonderful to have a safe carpark that encourages people to come and access the site, to drive and stay for a while, or be picked up by a friend.

"Previously the carpark was pretty much a paddock, with just grass and dirt so it will make a huge difference."

Member for Monbulk and Victorian Deputy Premier James Merlino congratulated the RSL members for making the project happen.

A Yarra Ranges firefighter says a flicked cigarette butt could spark a catastrophic blaze.

Montrose CFA PR co-ordinator Eddie Tichelaar said the region was "so darn dry" and urged smokers to bin their butts.

"On the right day with the right conditions - whether it be with the heat and the wind that goes through the valley and the ranges - a lit cigarette thrown out of the car landing in the grass or scrub can take off within minutes," he said.

"It's at any time through the summer.

"Once things have dried out, whether it's a cool day or a hot day, if it's ready to burn it's ready to burn.

"It makes me angry knowing what the possibilities are."

Mr Tichelaar said the brigade was thankfully receiving fewer calls to fires started by cigarettes.

"We used to get every year quite a lot of fires in the median strip. The tanbark starts burning," he said.

On the crew's Facebook page he shared a photo of a discarded cigarette butt found in short grass in Ballarat, and warned that a moment of stupidity could cost lives and property.

Littering fines range from $322 for an unlit cigarette to $645 for a lit cigarette, and under fire laws the act could cost $19,000-plus and/ or 12 months imprisonment.

Montrose CFA is hosting a Fire Ready session at its Mt Dandenong Road station from 10am on Sunday 3 February.

Mr Tichelaar said it would run for up to two hours and attendees could chat with firefighters and enjoy a free sausage sizzle.

About 20 people attended a similar session in November.

A single male Queensland fruit fly (QFF) has been found Silvan.

Agribusiness Yarra Valley QFF regional coordinator Bronwyn Koll said the discovery caused concern for commercial fruit and vegetable producers, and also residents with fruit and vegetables in their home gardens who have all been privileged to normally have fruit fly free production conditions.

QFF is an invasive insect pest that causes fruit to turn rotten internally when infested with QFF larvae.

"This pest is not welcome in the Yarra Valley - and community surveillance and action can help maintain a fruit fly free region," Ms Koll said.

"The detection this summer is a reminder to us all that despite our history of being QFFfree, we are all required to remain vigilant if we are to help protect the Yarra Valley."

She said produce grown in fruit fly free areas meant that growers could avoid chemical use, preserve the balance of beneficial insects in the production system, and avoid the expenses of having to apply fruit fly bait weekly or using netting.

Fruit fly netting is an insect mesh that requires a structure built to hold the net up.

Northern Victorians are regularly trapping and baiting for QFF and some also have to permanently remove host plants.

"This can all be avoided in the Yarra Valley if we take extremely good care of our fruit production in home gardens and commercial fruit growing areas right now," Ms Koll said.

"Action needs to be taken to prevent any Queensland Fruit Fly populations establishing in the Yarra Valley."

Picking ripe fruit and vegetables before they fall to the ground is a simple and effective preventative action, along with cleaning up any dropped fruit.

Traps can be hung in trees to help monitor for any fruit fly activity.

"Yarra Valley residents can help by ensuring they don't bring QFF infested fruit and vegetables into the Yarra Valley," Ms Koll said.

They can also make a fruit fly trap and hang it in the garden or buy commercially available traps online or from garden supply stores.

Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) in Ferntree Gully has partnered with Maroondah City Council to deliver a third specialised alternative education program for young people struggling in mainstream education due to high levels of anxiety including Social Anxiety disorder.

The Maroondah City Council Youth Services team identified a growing concern within local schools of young people not attending due to high levels of anxiety leading to disengagement.

MDLC is a registered training organisation and non-school senior secondary provider and has been delivering alternative youth education programs since 2009.

"MDLC provides quality programs that allow young people to successfully re-engage with education," MDLC Centre Manager Janet Claringbold said.

"MDLC has excellent credentials as an alternative youth education provider with strong ethical values and a learner-centred approach."

Australia Day done right Belgrave will host an afternoon of dance, music, discussion and celebration under the trees at Borthwick Park on 26 January.

For the 12th straight year, Belgrave Survival Day will encourage people to take a different look at Australia Day and celebrate the survival of indigenous culture.

The event will run from noon to 4.30pm and will feature a welcome to country, smoking ceremony, indigenous and native american dance, singer songwriter Dave Arden, The Deans, the Mullum Mullum Choir and a didge mediation from Uncle Jowi.

There'll also be food and information stalls at this free event.

Yarra Ranges Council will hold an Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall at 1.30pm Saturday 26 January, following a citizenship ceremony at 10am.

In Cockatoo, the community will hold an awards presentation and breakfast from 7.30am to 10.30am at Alma Treloar Reserve in Pakenham Road.

Mount Evelyn Fire Brigade will host its annual Australia Day car wash and barbecue at Mount Evelyn Fast Fuel, 1 Monbulk Road, from

Greyhound owners probably have a few more kilometres on their car than the average motorist.

With only 13 race tracks across Victoria, most trainers cover many miles if they wish to race at Healesville's picturesque and unique straight track.

Given that the club races regularly on Friday and Sunday, some trainers back up twice a week, week in, week out.

One such trainer is Samantha Hooke.

Having recently moved from Bendigo to the small township of Bushfield, 10 kilometres north of Warrnambool, Sam recently made the trip twice in seven days.

Covering 1318km and spending close to 14 hours driving to and from the valley was well worthwhile as her greyhound, Spritely Bob, won on both occasions.

With school holidays well underway, Sam was accompanied by her children Brianna, 11, and five-year-old Hunter and all three were

A lamington worthy fest

By Derek Schlennstedt The humble Aussie lamington, this fine Australian culinary icon that consists of sponge cake dipped in chocolate and liberally sprinkled with fine desiccated coconut is as an Australia Day treat.

Like a good Victorian beer with the cricket, Lamingtons on Australia Day is an Australian ritual, and when you bite into the little squareshaped sponge cake it's easy to see why they are so popular.

Exactly who whipped together the first recipe is still up for debate, with both Toowoomba and Ipswich and New Zealand claiming to be the lamington's birthplace.

Of course for all these so-called claims are stories of how this Australia icon came to be.

One such story suggests Lamingtons were created through an accident at work by a maidservant to Lord Lamington, the thoroughlyBritish eighth Governor of Queensland.

It tells the story of a maid who accidentally dropped sponge cake into some melted chocolate and, to avoid food waste and messy fingers when the cake was being eaten, it was dipped in coconut - an error turned into a dessert that Lord Lamington from Brisbane loved.

Another story suggests that Lord Lamington had unexpected guests but the cupboard was bare except for a stale sponge cake.

The chef had to improvise and coated the cake in chocolate and rolled it in coconut to disguise its staleness.

In any case, no matter who really invented it or where and when, today, it's one of Australia's national dishes, and in 2006, The National Trust of Queensland named it a "Heritage Icon" - there's even a National Lamington Day every 21 July.

The humble Aussie lamington consists of sponge cake dipped in chocolate and liberally sprinkled with fine desiccated coconut, and is a perfect Australia Day treat.

TRY it out to help

By Derek Schlennstedt Youth Mentoring Initiative 'Try Mentoring' is seeing a shortage of volunteers in the Dandenong Ranges, and leaders say they need your help.

Try Mentoring connects at-risk and vulnerable young people aged 7-20-years-old with a positive adult role model.

The not-for-profit organistion supports volunteers to empower, guide and listen to young people as a fully trained mentor.

TRY offers personal development training days for all mentors, and Program Co-ordinator Daniel Beeson said mentors could either assist by joining a group mentor program or a 1 to 1 mentor program.

"We believe it is incredibly important to empower, support, and listen to the voices of young people especially if they face generational issues of disadvantage," he said.

"By intervening positively in a young person's life, we change outcomes for a community.

"The stigma around mentoring is that people don't think there are qualified enough or not worthy enough so we're trying to break that stigma.

"They just need to show up, have some fun and be present and to take that person their mentoring out of their environment ... generally that's all that is needed."

TRY's group mentoring program involves

the connection and matching of at least two mentors with a group of young people, which usually involves coming together to participate in a shared activity, such as sport, performing arts, or group fitness.

Also on offer is the 1:1 mentor program, which involves matching one mentor with a young person on a one-to-one basis.

Each match meets weekly to enjoy a shared activity over the course of 12 months.

"We're doing amazing things and we just need more people to jump on board," Mr Beeson said.

"It's nothing to scary and just one hour each week can make a difference and change the life of a person who really need sit."

Donations flood in for drought relief From October to December the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group ran an appeal collecting toiletries for dought affected families.

The public were asked to donate goods to be distributed to drought affected families by dropping them off at one of the companies three branches located in Upwey, Belgrave or Cockatoo.

All the items that were donated were given to the Lions Club of Pakenham to distribute in care packages.

John Waters, Chairman of Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group said there were immensely pleased by the huge amount of items that were donated.

"We are pleased that so many items have been donated and we are sure that they will be appreciated by families in the drought affected areas," Mr Waters said.

"Even small gestures of this kind can make a difference to those in need. Thank you to everyone who contributed."

The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group ran an appeal collecting toiletries for drought affected families.

Nominations now open Nominations are now open for the annual Stan Henwood Award, which recognises outstanding individuals in Cardinia Shire who have made significant contributions to our community.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Graeme Moore encouraged community members to submit a nomination for someone who they think has made a positive difference in their community.

"This award honours the late Stan Henwood and his lifetime contribution to Tynong and the municipality. It's a special way for Council and community to remember Stan Henwood and acknowledge similarly motivated individuals in our community today.

"Now is the time for us to think about and recognise those members of our community who are continuing this selfless work with their own commitment and contributions to making Cardinia Shire a wonderful place to live, work, learn and play," Cr Moore said.

Stan was held in high esteem by the Tynong community for his lifelong dedication to strengthening his local community and Cardinia Shire more broadly. His positive influence and contributions over the years not only improved the lives of those around him, but also saw him receive a medal from the Australian Prime Minister for Service to Sport and an Order of Australia for Service to the Community.

Nominations for the 2019 award close at 5pm on Sunday 24 March 2018.

Nominations must be submitted online via the SmartyGrants portal, which will require the nominator to register an account before they can prepare and submit a nomination form.

The fabulous Family Fun Festival and Cinema under the stars event is being held on 25 January, 2018 beginning at 3pm and running through to 8pm.

The Eastern Regional Cinemas (ERL), Cinema Under the Stars will return to Lilydale for the second time, with the animated film Small Foot set to play on a big screen.

Karla Simon, marketing and graphic design co-ordinator at ERL said the event is a fantastic night out for the family.

"We have a rockabilly theme and we're encouraging people to get dressed up as we'll have a bit of a fashion parade with a little bit of a competition for best dressed."

"We've also got a big band, and they'll be providing some musical entertainment for some rockabilly dancers.

"The event will start at 3 and continue un-

til 8 and then the screening of the movie Small Foot will take place as soon as it gets dark."

The Games Lounge will be available inside the Lilydale Library also and the Library will be open if you would like to borrow some books, DVD's or CD's as well.

There will also be food and refreshments available from the Point of View Cafe.

Pies are flying high

By Richard Millott Belgrave produced an unbeaten 211-run stand between Aaron Brunner and Johnathon Levell to power to a 10-wicket win over Ferntree Gully.

Chasing the Blues' target of 207 from last week, Brunner scored 109 not out.

Down the other end of the Belgrave pitch, Levell provided the definition of perfect support with 76 not out.

The win comes as a huge boost for the Pies, who were at the foot of the Norm Reeves Shield ladder.

The six points to the tally saw them jump to eighth place, while Ferntree Gully takes 10th place, narrowly missing out on ninth place to Upper Ferntree Gully on percentage.

Eildon Park inflicted The Basin with its first loss of the season, constructing a well-rounded chase of the Bears' 217.

Josh Dowling (79) and Jake Pollard (65*) were the livewires at the crease for the home team to help the Panthers reach 5/220, with the win helping to lift Eildon Park to fifth place and now just a game outside of the top four while having superior percentage.

The Basin remains clear on top by a match.

Athletes get busy in the extreme heat

By Jamie Strudley It was a busy week for Yarra Ranges Athletics Club athletes. In a week of extreme temperatures, some outstanding performances were recorded throughout Victoria.

Thursday night saw club athletes competing at the third round of Vic Milers, held at a warm but calm Box Hill track.

Saturday morning, the club hosted the Croydon Little Athletics Club for a round of friendly interclub competition.

The extra competition definitely motivated all athletes to produce some excellent efforts and many new friendships formed.

Saturday afternoon, senior athletes were competing across the state in round 10 of AV Shield.

Next to no wind but warm conditions made for some outstanding results as athletes head towards finals.

Next week, Yarra Ranges Little Athletics athletes will enjoy a Twilight Round ahead of a long weekend, with all the action starting at 5.45pm.

Some seniors will be competing at the Victorian Country Championships in Bendigo -Ashleigh Rooke, Hayden Rooke, Tiara Willis, Sarah Ebbels and Anne-Marie Ebbels.

Training is on every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6pm.

Mount Evelyn continues on

By Chris Anderson After a cracking day of cricket across the Yarra Valley, followers of the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield have been left to wonder...can anyone challenge the Mount Evelyn freight train?

The answer might come with which of the other teams can pick up the pace over the closing four rounds of the season.

Mount Evelyn again showed its considerable strength against Yarra Junction.

Yarra Junction opted to put some scoreboard pressure on the home side with the decision to bat in great conditions.

Some loose bowling accompanied by some brisk strokeplay, particularly from captain Kevin Bomford (30) put the Eagles at 0/41 after 10 overs.

Sensing the need to change fortunes, Kane Jones injected himself and Gareth Fraser into the action and this effectively ended the contest.

Jones and Fraser collected five wickets each in a brilliant display of skilful bowling and planning.

Their efforts reduced the Eagles from a promising 0/43 to being dismissed for 67 runs.

Despite Terry Ottrey snaring two late wickets with the finish line in sight, the Mounters strolled to an eight-wicket victory inside 20 overs.

Jon Williams continued his promising season with a well-compiled 40 not out.

Veterans on the field The Yarra Valley Veterans Cricket Club (YVVCC) over-60s played against Mornington Peninsula Veterans at Yarra Junction Oval on Sunday 13 January.

The YVVCC formed seven years ago, initially with just an over-60s team to cater for the fast-growing interest all over Australia in older age group cricket. Now the Yarra Valley team also has an over-50s side. Both age groups are performing well in their competitions, with players in both age groups having achieved Victorian and even Australian selection.

Veterans Cricket Victoria president Greg Johnson, also a Yarra Valley player, said there were four over-60s teams in the state 12 years ago.

"And over-50s and over-70s hadn't started," he said.

"This year we have a total of 60 teams in Victoria and around 1000 members as well as na-

The YVVCC is still in its early stages but is experiencing a lot of interest, with many explayers making a return to the game, some after many years of retirement.

Players that used to be competing against each other in various YVCA teams are now playing alongside each other for YVV. "Vets cricket is proving to be a great way for

older players to keep fit and enjoy the friendships and social contact," Johnson said.

"There are numerous opportunities now for veteran age group players to play our normal Sunday fixtures or take it further with cricket on some of the finest grounds in various carnivals, and also pathways through Cricket Australia to play at state and national level."

Bowlers meet hot climate Last Tuesday the weather presented very hot conditions for pennant for Monbulk Bowling Club.

Monbulk 1 was playing at Chirnside Park and both teams agreed to start one hour earlier to try and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Scores across all rinks were tight early but Monbulk eventually got on top to win the overall by eight shots, 62 to 54.

Eric Markham's rink had a tight battle for the first half of the game but then powered away to win by 12 shots, 24 to 12.

Richard Cookson's rink also produced a good second half to win by seven shots, 25 to 18.

Andrew Bell's rink had a difficult day losing by 11 shots, 13 to 24.

Both Monbulk 2 and Monbulk 3 did not complete their games due to the heat and will share the points with the opposition.

All Monbulk teams maintain their positions in the top four.

On Saturday, third-on-the-ladder Monbulk 1 played at fourth-placed Lilydale.

Monbulk started slowly and this proved costly.

Dion Addison's team took a while to get into the match.

By the 14th end they had won only three ends and were down seven shots to 24.

Then they won the mat and started changing up the length.

That was the trigger - they were able to win the next six ends and got to within seven shots.

At the finish they went down 17 shots to 26.

Eric Markham's rink also started slowly.

By the halfway mark they were down two shots to 14.

After the break they came out with more confidence, won a few ends, including a massive five, but ended up going down 15 shots to 24.

Richard Cookson's team also struggled in the beginning.

At the break they were down seven shots to 13.

In the back half they came good, only giving away three ends.

They levelled by the 19th end and then won the last two ends to finish up with a win 23 shots to 20.

It was a strong comeback.

Andrew Bell's team lead all day.

The front half combination of Geoff Petersen and Kevin Crehan revelled on this green, always giving Andrew something with which to work his magic.

The team picked up some good multiples and ran away with a strong win 26 shots to 13.

Overall, it was a thrilling finish - Monbulk had been down all day, but on the last couple of ends got within striking distance.

Overall, Monbulk failed by just two shots, 81 to 83.

That loss pushed Lilydale into third position and Monbulk into fourth.

Monbulk 2 travelled over to Keysborough to take on Dandenong RSL, with Monbulk occupying top spot on the ladder.

Eric Furby's team played a tough rink and

went down by six shots, 16 to 22.

Peter Donders' team lost 12 shots to 19 and Graeme Goller's team lost 10 shots to 19.

Peter Francis' team was the shining light for the day, winning by four shots, 21 shots to 17, with the overall result being a loss by 18 shots, 59 to 77.

That loss has meant the side lost top spot on the ladder and is now sitting third, but with less than a game between the top three sides.

Night Owls bowls is in full swing on Thursday nights.

A number of people, including many new bowlers, enjoyed the warm night under lights and had a great deal of fun.

The bowls starts at 7.30pm, with casual dress and flat soled shoes advised.

Hawks fall short against Lysterfield at Silvan match

By Tom Watson Monbulk Cricket Club's first side fell just short in its top-of-the-table clash with Lysterfield at Silvan on the weekend.

Set 285 to win off 80 overs, Monbulk started well, getting to 35 before the first wicket fell.

Steady partnerships followed to have the game evenly poised at 2/100 at tea.

After the break it was Jason Fraser (36) and Braden Taeuber (88) who ensured that the Hawks were within striking distance.

Unfortunately both went out in the 71st over, with 70 still to get, and the chase struggled from there. After the 80 overs, Monbulk finished on 8/245.

Braden Taeuber put in a patient, mature innings.

The twos were set for a big chase, needing 377 to topple Knox Boronia Churches.

A few big partnerships were going to be required to get the runs, and there were several scores of note.

However, Monbulk lacked a big score.

Brian Martin (36), Keelan Storey (54), Tom Berman (42) and Dylan Goldberg (42) all got starts but failed to go on and make it count.

Finishing on 10/262 was a fair effort and showed what several partnerships could do.

The thirds wrapped up a comprehensive outright win against South Belgrave.

Monbulk finished with 7/170 with Jason Sim-

monds (59) and Liam Mackin (30) starting well.

From there, Michael Adams (26*) and Chris Defina (22) blasted a total.

Monbulk bowled South Belgrave out twice, for 67 and 74.

Wickets were shared in the innings, with Craig Heppell (five for the match) and Chris Defina (four for the match) in the wickets.

The fours struggled in the second day of their match.

Set 311 runs to win by Upwey, with Ben Horlock taking 4/46, Monbulk failed to make a push for victory.

Horlock again was the shining light, making 42 as the Hawks finished on 10/101.

Juniors were also back this week with the

under-12s, 14s and 16s playing.

The under-16s had an excellent victory, with Nick Taylor (38) and Jai Spencer (20) getting the Hawks to 7/118.

Upper Ferntree Gully could on manage 10/55, with Jett Bolton taking 3/7 and Nick Taylor 3/6.

The under-14s won a close game against Eildon Park, making 7/94 (Josh Davis 16, Bon Sullivan 12). Eildon Park was restricted to 7/92, with Kale Dharmadasa and Ethan Blenkiron taking 1/4.

The under-12s had a tough day on the field, making 4/77 (Charlie Hooper 24*), while Eildon Park easily passed them at 1/127 (Rylan Kay 1/11).
