38 theft charges Police have charged a Cranbourne North man in relation to an ongoing investigation into a number of alleged incidents which occurred late last year. The investigation relates to a number of burglaries, vehicle and petrol thefts which occurred between October and December last year in Melbourne's south east. Detectives from the Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit and officers from the Special Operations Group attended a house at Cottage Court, Hampton Park on Monday 8 January
where the 30-year-old man attempted to flee from police and resist arrest. He was arrested by police with the assistance of a police dog. He sustained injuries and was transported to hospital under police guard. Following his arrest police executed search warrants at houses in Cranbourne North and Doveton where four stolen motorcycles were located along with other allegedly stolen property.

A 22-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were arrested after a search warrant was executed by police at a property in Cranbourne West yesterday. The 22-year-old man from Cranbourne West has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicle, handle stolen goods and negligently deal with proceeds of crime. The 23-year-old woman from Carrum Downs has been interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Groups cashing in By Brendan Rees Twelve not-for-profit community groups have received a welcome New Year's cheque - with each sharing a funding pool of $68,000 through the 2019 Lynbrook Hotel Community Contributions Fund. After years of lobbying from the Lynbrook community, Casey Council and Federal Member for Holt Anthony Bryne, the Lynbrook Hotel was finally forced to make $68,000 of annual community contributions from poker machines over a four-and-half year period to Casey Council after conditions on its licence were imposed by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. Four residents on the assessment panel assessed 44 applications. A total of $317,615 was requested by the eligible applications, from a funding pool of $68,000. Cr Wayne Smith said "the outcome was pretty impressive." "We had the opportunity to take the money that was to be allocated to the community as part of its agreement with the Lynbrook Hotel. Admittedly, at the time the officers weren't in favour of it but council ultimately decided to go ahead with it. "I think in the end it was the right thing to do. Certainly the community in Lynbrook and beyond think it was the right thing to do. "We are good at distributing money by our contributions and this was no different,"
Hampton Park Football and Netball Club received $7,500 through the Lynbrook Hotel Community Contributions Fund. Cr Smith said. In a report before councillors, it stated "The City of Casey does not endorse gambling, gaming providers, products and services.Council has accepted to distribute these funds for the benefit of the residents of Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and Hampton Park, being the primary patron catchment of the venue, and for the wider Casey community." PTV reveals train pain for commuters By Brendan Rees The latest public transport performance results reveal train cancellations on the Cranbourne line have more than tripled since last June. Public Transport Victoria's December performance results show there were 62 cancellations during last December compared to 19 last June. Train punctuality dropped by 5.8 per cent in the 12 months to December while the amount of trains delivered dropped marginally from 97.6 per cent to 97.4 per cent. On average 48 trains were cancelled per month throughout the year with 383 trains running late in the month of December alone. "December saw major works continue to prepare the network for the introduction of the new High Capacity Metro Trains and we especially thank passengers on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Gippsland lines for their ongoing patience during these important works," PTV chief executive Jeroen Weimar said. A Metro spokesperson said a decision to cancel a service is only done as a last resort and this can be due to a wide range of issues including trespassers on the network, extreme weather events, and train and equipment faults. "December cancellations on the Cranbourne line were consistent with the levels over the previous months, and overall network

Resident Travis King said train transport was "a pain at the moment, making it hard for people that "travel a fair way to go to work." "Hopefully when school go back for kids it will be nearly all sorted," he said. Chathurika Amarasingha posted: "Yes, it is frustrating as it takes almost two hours to get to the city but hopefully for a better future!" Salman Hazari said as a commuter he un-
derstood upgrade works were required "but even after the works for which commuters have go through replacement services and extra travel time still after that delays keep happening like faulty trains and signalling issues," he said. "Train service to and from Cranbourne is very frustrating" with "too many cancellations," Kalyan Gupta posted. "Every time works happen anywhere on Pakenham or Cranbourne lines, trains between Dandenong and Cranbourne are run as a shuttle service....people are expected to change train at Dandenong." Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon raised a motion in council last May calling on the State Government to fix the Cranbourne line saying there were was a number of "really hardworking residents" that were "constantly frustrated with so many issues."

Police observed a Mazda 3 travelling east on Monash Freeway at 188km/h between Narre Warren Road and Clyde Road about 4.15am on 5 January. The vehicle exited on to Clyde Road where it was allegedly detected travelling at 108km/h in a 60 zone before being intercepted by police. The man had a breath alcohol reading of 0.139. Police say the driver's P1 Probationary driver's licence had been previously cancelled and disqualified at court. The vehicle, which belonged to his future father-in-law was impounded for 30 days. He is expected to appear at court at a later date with charges including reckless conduct endangering life and speed dangerous.
Learner driver's car impounded An unaccompanied learner driver has been caught behind the wheel in Cranbourne West on Wednesday 2 January and now faces multiple charges. Casey Highway Patrol intercepted a Hyundai Accent Coupe on Monaghans Road where they discovered a 24 year old female driver from Cranbourne West allegedly had a suspended learner's permit. Police also observed the driver had not displayed L plates or carried her learner's permit. Her vehicle was impounded and she will be required to attend court in relation to the charges. It is an offence for a learner driver, probationary driver or driver under 26 years of age to not carry their licence while driving.

Car stolen, dumped and torched An investigation is underway after a stolen car was found burnt out in Tynong North earlier this month. The black Holden Commodore sedan was stolen from a car park on Pound Road in Hampton Park between 9.30pm and 1am on January 6-7. The car was later located burnt out in a gravel car park on Tynong North Road in Tynong North at around 8.30am on Monday 7 January. The registration of the vehicle was XZF671. Investigators are appealing for witnesses who may have seen this vehicle around these times to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Works are on track Drivers in the south east are another step closer to better journeys on a duplicated Thompsons Road through Carrum and Cranbourne. Construction crews working on the 10.7 kilometre Thompsons Road duplication have finalised a mammoth task that involved lifting 21 concrete beams into place, forming the new southern bridge. The second bridge over the Cranbourne train line is a critical east-west connection for the growing south-east and the wider freight network. The works program involved 31 team members working together day and night to successfully lift the 45 tonne reinforced bridge beams. To ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists as they travel through the site traffic controllers have registered more than 36,000 hours on the project to date. Road and rail were separated for good at the Thompsons Road/Cranbourne rail line in June when the northern bridge was opened to traffic. In another major boost for the local community, the Thompsons Road and Dandenong-Frankston Road intersection will be upgraded as part of the program and three years earlier than originally planned. Signals will be installed at the intersection to tackle queueing at the roundabout which can stretch up to 1.5 kilometres along Dandenong-Frankston Road and more than 700 metres onto Thompsons Road during peak periods. In the interim, newly installed line marking is making it easier for vehicles to turn right onto Dandenong-Frankston Road while improving traffic flow for the 60,000 vehicles which travel through the roundabout each day. The project has made excellent progress over the last couple of months, with a number of local roads reopening to traffic on schedule

Thompsons road heading west to the Westernport Highway. including Lyndhurst Boulevard, Lesdon Avenue and Stoneleigh Road. The McCormicks Road intersection has also reopened with new traffic lights to better manage the flow of traffic in and out of Thompsons Roads. The changes will provide better access for Sandhurst residents and those traveling to Sandhurst Golf Club. The Thompsons Road Upgrade duplication
works are on track to be completed by mid2019, with the DandenongFrankston Road intersection expected to open with traffic signals in early 2020. Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards said "We know this has been a big disruption for locals and we thank them for their patience while we get on with the job of delivering this duplication and other key intersection improvements."
Firefighters battled a hay stack fire in Clyde on Tuesday 8 January. Crews from Clyde, Tooradin and Cranbourne brigades were called to the Manks Road fire about 7.30am which was brought under control within 45 minutes. A CFA spokesperson said it was believed the hay stack may have spontaneously combusted. Twenty-five firefighters used six appliances to contain the fire which continued to burn until the afternoon. In a Facebook post, Clyde CFA said a farm shed with farming equipment and bales of hay were engulfed in flames. "CFA members wearing breathing apparatus combated the fire for about three hours until it was bought under control. Part of Manks Road was closed by police. No person was injured in the fire," the post said. An advice message was issued by Vic Emergency saying there was no threat to the community, and to keep the roads clear for emergency services to respond.

A Cranbourne North secondary school student’s bright artwork where “everyone counts” will become a visible image on the roads. Alkira Secondary College Year 9 student Laura Marzec won first place in last year’s Wallara ‘Picture This’ art competition, and will appear on a Wallara Australia bus. Wallara, a Dandenong-based disability support service for adults in the South-East, invited secondary students to get creative and produce artwork under the theme ‘social inclusion for people with different abilities.’ Laura said her artwork depicted a world globe with people raising and holding their hands, with “everyone feeling valued, important and happy.” “In the design, the houses are close together and look similar, this promotes our society having equal opportunities for everyone,” she said. “The colours I used in this design I think are eye catching, bright, happy and I wanted this drawing to have contrast.“ Laura’s entry wowed a panel of eight judges from Wallara which also earned her a cheque for $250. The competition is held annually at two South-East schools to inspire students to depict social inclusion. Last year, Hallam Senior College and Alkira Secondary College were the chosen schools.

Up for state awards By Brendan Rees A Casey BMX group and two individuals are in the running for state sports awards for their outstanding contribution to sport to the community. Casey Wolves BMX Track - Regional BMX Track and Sports Cycling pavilion has been nominated as a finalist in the 2018 Victorian Sport Awards and is vying for the Local Government Initiative of the Year award. Elaine Duyvestyn is in the running for the Service to Victorian Community Sport and Recreation award for her for contribution in softball, while Phillip Craig is up for the Community Official of the Year Award for his commitment to motor sport. Ms Duyvestyn of Cranbourne has dedicated 50 years service to the Melbourne Softball Association. "At a state level I've been involved in the board of management. I've also spent the last 50 seasons at Fawkner Park as a player, coach, administrator, and a whole range of positions," she said. "I've had a life-long involvement in softball which I love, it's the passion I have. Obviously I wouldn't do what I've done without the support of my family." Ms Duyvestyn said she was honoured to be nominated for the award. "It's my peers that have thought enough of me to nominate me for this award and that means an awful lot to me." Elaine has also dedicated 30 years as a volunteer in management with Clarendon Street Community Child Care Centre in Cranbourne. Learner caught in the wrong Police have caught an unaccompanied learner driver in Cranbourne East on Wednesday 9 January. Casey Highway Patrol intercepted a Ford FG XR6 on Botany Way where the driver returned a positive oral fluid test. The 25 year old male from Pakenham had also not displayed L plates. The driver will be required to attend court at a later late.
Driver loses control Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash which occurred in Narre Warren on Sunday, 13 January morning. Officers have been told a Holden sedan was travelling east along Princes Highway about 1am when the driver lost control of the car. The car rolled and ended up landing on its roof. The driver of the car, believed to be a man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Three other occupants of the car, a teenage boy and two girls, were not seriously injured but were taken to hospital as a precaution. Police are investigating if speed or racing was a factor in the crash and wish to speak to the occupants of a red hatch which was seen to be driving near the sedan at the time of the incident. Pool opens By Melissa Grant As the summer heat starts to bite, kids are getting into the swim at Clyde North's sparkling new indoor swimming pool. Kingswim opened the swim centre on Tuesday at an event that also launched the neighbouring Clyde North Tuckers Road YMCA Early Learning Centre. Storme Graham, 12 and brother Kade, 10, were the first to make a splash in the heated 20-metre pool after winning a competition run by Star News Group, publisher of the Cranbourne Star News. Australian Olympic swimmer Josh Beaver, who grew up in nearby Tooradin, said the "unbelievable" swim facility would potentially save lives.

"It's been pretty evident this summer with the number of drownings that creating opportunities for kids to learn how to swim is so important," the backstroker, who started lessons at six months, said. "Who knows the next Olympian may come out of here." The Kingswim facility will hold more than 200 swimming lessons each week, providing hundreds of children with a vital life skill. The new learning hub has also delivered a jobs boost to Clyde North, with 50 positions at Kingswim and another 22 at the Early Learning Centre. The Early Learning Centre is due to open its doors on Monday.

Going green at the YMCA The new YMCA Clyde North Tuckers Road Early Learning Centre will be the second childcare facility in the state to use eWater; a greener, safer and cleaner system pioneered in Australia. Successfully used in hospitals, eWater is a more sustainable way of cleaning, with a significant decrease in the number of chemicals used throughout the centre. Federal and state organisations are also adopting the cleaning system as they are keen to cut down their use of potentially toxic package chemicals and excess packaging. The system works by using water and salt to produce two separate solutions that clean and sanitise safety. The sanitising solution kills harmful microbes due to its super-oxidized properties. YMCA Clyde North Tuckers Road Early Learning Centre manager Elise Christie said cleanliness was extremely important to local parents as well as their kid's exposure to unnecessary chemicals. "This cleaning system ticks all the boxes for us. It's sustainable, it's safe and it ensures our beautiful new centre is kept clean," she said. "It is also more environmentally friendly as there are no harsh chemicals being put back in our waterways. "Adopting e-water is a move towards a more sustainable practice in YMCA Early Learning Centres and YMCA facilities. Sustainable measures like eWater create positive experiences for children around recycling and other initiatives like partnering with Zoos Victoria by using bubbles instead of rubber balloons."

Two years after moving to Aveo Hunters Green, Phil Nielsen and Anne Atkinson still love driving into the Cranbourne East retirement community. Students who inspire Students from across Casey have been recognised for their leadership efforts. Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne presented the 2018 Holt Community Spirit and Leadership Awards on Monday 17 December. Last year marked the 17th anniversary since the awards were initiated and acknowledged students who actively contribute to their school and their wider community. Thirty-one students from 29 local schools were recognised at the awards ceremony held at the Cranbourne Community Theatre. The Awards ceremony was attended by over 150 people including award recipients, parents, teachers and family members. "It is important that we as a community celebrate the wonderful achievements and outstanding contributions made by the students in their schools and the wider community," said Mr Byrne. "We heard inspiring stories of students who have embodied community spirit and demonstrated maturity beyond their years. We heard about students who organised fundraisers for local charities, represented their schools in sporting competitions, participated in various ceremonies as well as represented their schools as ambassadors in the local community," he said. In particular, one student organised a 'PJ Day', where students were encouraged to wear their pyjamas to school if they donated a gold coin, or otherwise donated a new pair of pyjamas for children in need. The student not only helped raise $395, but also 105 pairs of new pyjamas were given to a local charity. "It was a great honour to present these awards. I am extremely proud of our young people, and I know that our future will be in safe in their hands with such inspiring stories.' Mr Byrne said. All award recipients received a framed certificate and a Village Cinemas voucher.

Schools are the key to active children says expert Sport Australia CEO Kate Palmer says schools are a key vehicle to solving the nation’s inactivity crisis. Ms Palmer launched the 31st Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) International Conference at the AIS this week. Sport Australia is sponsoring and hosting the ACHPER conference at its AIS campus in Canberra, with 250 delegates from around the world including physical education teachers, sport educators, coaches and associated health practitioners. A report card released by the Active Healthy Kids Australia late last year scored Australia a D-minus for children’s physical activity levels, ranking the nation 32 of 49 countries. Research
shows 81 per cent of Australian children are not meeting our physical activity guidelines. “This is not good enough because we know sport and physical activity can play a crucial role in the holistic development of children, putting them on the path to vibrant and productive lives,” Ms Palmer said. “It can impact positively on their physical and mental health, social development, and their ability to learn. “There is also a long-term gain because we know children who grow up active and playing sport are 10 per cent more likely to remain active as adults. “We want to make daily physical activity a part of every child’s life and we believe
a key vehicle to solving our inactivity crisis is through schools. We want to support schools and teachers to deliver high quality physical education because we believe that is a critical vehicle for children to develop the confidence, competence and the motivation required to move. “Sport Australia is committed to making Australia the world’s most active nation and that will require generational change. Sport Australia wants to work collaboratively with the education sector and with organisations such as ACHPER, so together we can get Australian children moving more often.” The Australian Government’s $200 million Sporting Schools program, managed by Sport Australia, is one example of how Australian
children get free access to physical activity. In just over three years, the program has reached 84 per cent of Australian schools. “Despite the program’s enormous reach, evidence tells us we need more. Increasingly, Australian children are unable to perform basic fundamental movement skills such as running, throwing, kicking, catching or jumping," Ms Palmer said. “Sport Australia is developing a national commitment to increase physical literacy by embedding it within education environments. Our focus is on ensuring all young Australians have access to the volume of time and the quality of experience needed to ensure they develop into more physically literate Australians.”
Keeping children safe Kidsafe Victoria has released a warning on the dangers of low speed run overs in the lead up to the start of the new school year - a time that signifies increased activity around driveways, school drop off zones and school crossings. The organisation said that the start of the new school year brings a reminder for motorists to be extra vigilant around crowded school areas, including obeying speed limits, crossing signals and parking and drop off zone rules, so as not to create dangerous pedestrian situations for children. Jason Chambers, General Manager of Kidsafe Victoria, noted that child pedestrians are at increased risk of injury because unlike adults, they can't see over parked cars, they can't tell where sounds are coming from and they think that if they can see you, you can see them. An emphasis is also being placed on safety around driveways with Kidsafe Victoria highlighting them as one of the most dangerous
areas around the home. "A large number of driveway run over incidents occur in the morning and late afternoon, both of which are busy times for families coming to and from school, kindergarten and work", said Mr Chambers. Most driveway run overs occur in the driveway of the child's own home, or in a friend or relative's driveway. The driver is usually a parent, relative or family friend. In the majority of cases, the driver doesn't know that the child is close to the vehicle, they believe that they are being looked after elsewhere. Mr Chambers said that it was important to remember that children are unpredictable and surprisingly quick, which places them at high risk around moving vehicles. "All cars have large blind spots, some more than 15 metres. Children's small size, together with these large blind spots, means that children standing or stepping behind the vehicle often cannot be seen from the driver's seat."

Both locations have beginner and advanced rock 'n' roll classes open to all with no partner required. The classes are designed to be fun and easy to follow for those aged 10 upwards. Josh will take his passion in bike riding to raise money for drought stricken farmers.
Riding to support farmers By Brendan Rees When teachers told then four-year old Josh last year about how Aussie farmers were battling the drought he knew he wanted to do something to help. Josh's mum Lyndall Fokkens said while he was at Berwick Kindergarten he was "very keen to do something to raise money for the
farmers." With his passion for bike riding Lyndall encouraged Josh to do a 'Bike-A-Thon' at the bike track on Avebury Drive in Berwick on Tuesday 22 January with all money raised going towards the Drought Angels. "He loves riding and he loves the bike track so we thought let's just drum up a little bit of interest," she said.
"We just wrote out an invitation we gave around to friends at Christmas and family members." Josh, now 5, will ride as many laps as possible within 90 minutes. He has also invited some friends to come and ride alongside him. "My husband and I will be sponsoring his friends for the laps they ride," Lyndall said. Josh is so passionate about supporting
farmers that he even asked his friends to donate to the drought relief rather than buy presents on his birthday last November. "He's got a very soft heart and I'm very encouraged by his interest in the world around him," Lyndall said. "He loves his bikes so much. It was a very natural extension to do something with his riding for Drought Angels."

The Lang Lang Show is on again this year on Saturday 19 January. The show will once again feature a full program of horse events including riding, Shetland, Clydesdales, miniature ponies and stockhorse sections - just to name a few! Pre-entry for all horse events is required (except for the fun ring). Once again, all showjumping events will be held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds the week before on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 January. The Beef Cattle Spectacular will also return and is always a great success and well worth a look. Additionally, there is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended with many breeds competing for the title of show champion. The Sheep Stud Show section is new to the program this year with the committee expecting up to 100 entries. There will also be a miniature goat display with many local breeders bringing along their cutest companions. The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery and produce. While the Lang Lang Men’s Shed will be running the fresh veggie stall, the Bubble Muffin Kids Cooking Club will be running four entertaining shows throughout the day for children aged between five and 11 years. This free activity educates children about eating in a fun and healthy way. There will also be an animal nursery, a free art activity, showbags and assorted rides to keep kids entertained. I basically stopped marketing to schools and started marketing directly to parents through Facebook. I started booking out venues in Warragul, Traralgon, Wonthaggi, Casey and the Northern suburbs and I also went to Queensland and Perth doing these events motovating boys. Basically, I book the venue, I set up an advertising campagin on Facebook, parents book and turn up on the night with their boys. I had 273 people at the largest one. In January I am doing a tour from Melton to Canberra. I changed what I was doing because it was almost impossible to get through to the right people in schools. This way I get to speak directly to boys and their families. I am on the road a lot now. I have a team of people that come with me to my events to help me run them. I want to get to the point where my events are being held in every state in Australia. The most exciting thing about 2019 will be the launch of my new business, Savage Angels, which is Motov8 for girls. The slogan behind the business is that not all girls want to have fun. I want to empower girls to make choices independent of their femaninity. It’s about inspiring them to make choices about what they want out of life. I’ll get brand ambassadors on board and I won’t deliver the seminars but I’ll get an equally passionate the energetic person to do that for me.

And to add a little fuel to the fire, there’s a possibility that a major player in the Aussie food world (can’t mention names yet) will align and support the initiative. Tall, Dark and Nutty and Luxe Grazing Founder Jade Fraser It has been difficult to continue my businesses, Luxe Grazing and Tall, Dark and Nutty, with all the health regulations and the costs associated with getting a business going. The muesli business had to take a back seat to the grazing boards, which just took off. I had people asking me about orders for next year. Unfortunately, I was running my businesses out of my mum’s kitchen and we would have had to install a second sink to meet health regulations. It was a very difficult decision, but in the end it wasn’t worth the investment or the headache. With the muesli the volume I had to produce to make it profitable was beyond what I could do on my own. I have now joined forces with Clive Canal helping him with his business, Whozcookn. Clive needed admin assistance and he knew I have a real passion for food and for social enterprise. We met and got talking when we both co-worked at the Waterman Business Centre. I have reached out to a few celebrity chefs and I hope to be interviewing Maggie Beer in January for the Whozcookn website. My goal is to pursue a career in food writing. I would love to do a Bachelor of Arts in writing and write for magazines.

It was a well attended night with several Melbourne Renegades stars, state MPs, the Casey mayor and members of the public helping launch the new cricket academy.
Nabi launches academy By Nick Creely While Afghanistan international star Mohammad Nabi continues to build an almighty reputation on-field in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Renegades, his off-field impact is just as meaningful. The 34-year-old Afghan cricketer - who participated in the first Test match and ODI for his country in recent years - recently launched his very own cricket academy, all to inspire the next generation of cricketers coming through. A star spinner and aggressive middle-order batsman, Nabi has travelled globally playing limited overs cricket, and has established himself as one of the most versatile cricketers on the planet. The launch - which was held at Casey Fields, home of the Cranbourne Cricket Club
- on Friday 4 January, was well attended by members of the public, with special guests such as fellow Afghan star Rashid Khan, Melbourne Renegades players Tom Cooper, Joe Mennie, Cameron Boyce, Usman Shinwari and Jack Wildermuth, as well as Renegades coach Andrew McDonald, with state MPs and the Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon also helping kick things off. The Nabi International Cricket Academy (NICA) is all about giving players opportunities and pathways to gain the necessary skills to improve their game, and strive to deliver high quality cricket coaching with an aim to develop international players. The training provided by the NICA will cater to aspiring boys and girls who want to improve their game, and ultimately, reach the highest level, with the academy hoping to develop
state-of-the-art cricket coaching and training academies in Australia, which has a growing Afghan community, Afghanistan and United Kingdom. There will be both an Australian program, which will kick off in the summer of 2019 and run for 10 weeks to fit in with the start of the cricket season, as well as an Afghanistan Academy. Roman Sadath, the president of NICA, said that the launch was a success, and hopes the academy can continue to grow as it builds. "First of all I would express my sincere gratitude to everybody for supporting and helping with Nabi international Cricket Academy," he said. "The grand opening was a great success. I am very happy and excited to see great national and
international players who attended the launch. "It was also a very proud moment for me and others to see high profile guests present at the launch." Sadath encourages everyone who has high aspirations in cricket to jump onboard, and believes the lessons that can be taught by Nabi will hold future generations in good stead. "Nabi International Cricket Academy is a multicultural academy and we are very delighted that we had people from different backgrounds," he said. What more could you ask for? Buckley Ridges and Springvale South combined for a total of 578 runs in 80 overs at Park Oval during the blockbuster Round 9 clash on Saturday, but in the end, the Bucks - the ladder leaders - held off the Bloods. Returning from injury, Bucks skipper David White (149 not out) put on an absolute clinic, sending the ball flying to all parts, sending 15 fours to the boundary and eight whopping sixes. The Bucks were off to a blistering start despite an early wicket, with Daniel Watson (53 off 33 balls) in an ominous mood, but gun quick Matt Wetering (2/50) managed to stem the bleeding somewhat. But White combined with Susa Pradeep (43) for an entertaining 101 run partnership, and the Bloods were merciless to stop the Bucks from compiling a mammoth total. Demons take care of Bulls By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER - ROUND 9 Mark Cooper's Kooweerup just had too much class for Cardinia on Saturday. The Demons batted first and the fluency of openers Cooper and Chris O'Hara loomed brightest. The pair swiftly knocked their way to 85, before the skipper was dismissed for 27. O'Hara combined superbly with Chris Bright (70) to bring the innings back on track with a match defining 108-run stand, that lifted the Demons to an imposing 7/261 off 40 overs.
O'Hara made the Bulls pay, lifting his bat aloft for the first time since February 2014, in a sublime knock of 109. The Bulls got off to a slow start with Nooy and Ben Parrott back in the sheds within the first few overs, but gun recruit AJ Walker (102) took it to the Demons, blasting an excellent century before Cooper (2/48) broke through. Courtesy of a searing Nathan Lambden spell and composed half centuries to Lachie Sperling and Jordan Wyatt, Casey-South Melbourne has started off 2019 in perfect fashion. Not only did the Swans knock over a strong St Kilda side - albeit with a few names missing - they cemented themselves firmly inside the Victorian Premier Cricket top eight, such has been their extraordinary rise this season. On a healthy looking Casey Fields pitch, it was obvious that for the batters, starting would be difficult, and that there was plenty on offer with the ball if the bowlers put it in the right spots. But after winning the toss and batting, Luke Wells (14), Ryan Quirk (18) and Jared Maxwell (4) soon found themselves in the shed, with quick Henry Hall doing plenty of damage early. Wells in particular was an early blow, with the Swans skipper often getting his side off to a strong start. Experience, and with just enough innovation to keep the scoreboard ticking along, Sperling (60) and Michael Wallace (33) dug in, forming a crucial partnership that took them to 3/117 before the departure of the latter brought the visitors back to level pegging. Coming off some runs just before the break, the aggressive Jordan Wyatt (58) - a player that never allows a bowler to settle into a rhythm - combined with Sperling to continue to tick the score along, and eventually the Swans mustered up 9/235 off their 50, with some late wickets taken by the visitors pegging the score back slightly. But, nonetheless, it was a strong total on that pitch, and an even clearer indication of just how much depth the Swans now possess with their batting. Often bowling without luck so far this season, Nathan Lambden (4/47) finally got just rewards with his efforts, with the Swans' spearhead rummaging through the top-order early to leave the visitors 2/3. It was just rewards for the talented quick, who after a quiet patch before Christmas, has got himself going now with 17 wickets at a touch under 25 next to his name.

Berwick aths stars shine It was a special day for Berwick Little Athletics on 15 December at the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships. Held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Berwick Little Athletics had its most successful State Relay event ever, coming away with eight medals; three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Impressively, another 15 teams made finals, placing them in the top eight in Victoria. The gold medal-winning teams were; U12B medley, U16B medley and U16 mixed
4x100m. Silver medal-winning teams were; U9B 4x200m and U16 mixed 4x200m. Bronze medal-winning teams were; U9B 4x100m, U11 mixed 4x200m and U16G medley. A very special mention must go out to the U16 girls, who have qualified for state every year - since U9s - in the medley event and whose previous best finish was 5th. They showed what persistence, determination and sticking together can achieve by coming away with a bronze medal their final Little Athletics Victoria relay event.

Partington and Wood claim a memorable state title CRANBOURNE BOWLS Pennant returned on Saturday and it was a must-win for the Cranbourne number one side to keep their finals aspirations alive. They came home with a good solid win and a very valuable 16 points, which were badly needed. Cranbourne skips, Isobel Partington and Lynne Wood teamed up and went all the way to become Victorian state senior women's champions. A great way to finish off a good year of bowls for both ladies before the Christmas break. Division 2 Skip Sue Hudson and her team of Joe Byrne, Lynne Wood, and Fritz Helle continued their recent great form with another huge win against Glen Waverley. Sue and Fritz are playing some great bowls together which is bad news for the opposition teams. They won by 20 shots, which set up a 23-shot win and 16 pennant points. Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Glen Waverley 61. Division 3 Skip Tony Collins and his team of Noel Hardy, Graeme Wood and Allan Cook had an 11-shot win on Saturday, which contributed to the 10shot win against Narre Warren who have been travelling well this season. Cranbourne 75 (14 points) defeated Narre Warren 65. Division 5 Nothing went to plan and they had a day they would prefer to forget. Berwick were just too good on the day with all rinks losing. Cranbourne 61 (0 points) defeated by Berwick 93. Division 7 How does he do it? Skip Sofio Raiti and his team of David Brown, Helen Witherden and Rob Dickson had another huge win, this time by 23 shots. Opposition teams must tremble in their boots when they come across Sofio, who is having a fantastic year.
