When teachers told then four-year old Josh last year about how Aussie farmers were battling the drought he knew he wanted to do something to help.

Josh's mum Lyndall Fokkens said while he was at Berwick Kindergarten he was "very keen to do something to raise money

for the farmers."

With his passion for bike riding Lyndall encouraged Josh to do a 'Bike-A-Thon' at the bike track on Avebury Drive in Berwick on Tuesday 22 January with all money raised going towards the Drought Angels.

"He loves riding and he loves the bike track so we thought let's just drum up a little bit of interest," she said.

Outrage over parking fines

By Brendan Rees Confused drivers are being stung with parking fines at the front of two hospitals along Kangan Drive in Berwick, with some describing it as "disgusting."

Visitors and patients of St John of God Hospital and Casey Hospital are finding themselves with an unexpected $161 ticket on their windscreens after Casey Council introduced new parking restrictions last July.Lynbrook resident Michael Drew said he was slapped with a fine within three minutes of parking on the 13 December last year as he was about to visit a specialist at St John of God Hospital.

"It was pouring rain. They've (parking officers) actually got out of their car and done that in the rain."

He says council are "making money out of vulnerable people" from the parking ban, which affects about 40 parking spaces.

"All it does is emphasize that it's just wrong.

You can't be making money like this."

The signs on Kangan Drive, which were installed on Friday 13 July 2018, show 'no stopping' restrictions from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. During other hours of the day, parking is restricted to two hours.

Since his fine, Mr Drew has been out at Kangan Drive most mornings while the ban was in place to warn other motorists. He says he's "saved" more than 60 people from a potential parking fine.

This included four pregnant women and a disabled man on Friday 11 January. However, he said up to 27 people were being booked on any given day."They're all parked here because everyone else is ... it's 100 per cent deceiving."

According to Mr Drew, he says council must change the signs to a clearway: "If they're nabbing people every day clearly it's not working."

"They're paying 100 bucks to see a specialist and coming back here and paying $161 for the privilege of doing it."

"The council will say it's really bad in the school hours which it is but you don't nail people 10 grand a week," he said.

The new parking signs and the VMS board was displayed for a week after the new signs were installed with the message reading "changed parking conditions now in effect".

"Following the installation of the new parking signs, several visual aids were installed to help drivers identify the changed conditions including VMS boards and corflute signage," he said.

"Commuters using the precinct have been experiencing congestion and travel delays due to the proximity of the hospitals, with a high volume of traffic choosing to park along Kan-

gan Drive to avoid paying for parking within the hospitals."

Marie, who asked not publish not publish her surname, said it wasn't fair: "When people are here for medical treatment obviously they're sick, and to be making money off sick people is disgusting."

Another motorist, Kuna Pnosamy, who was slapped with a parking fine on Friday 11 January, said "it's pretty confusing."

"I would rather pay $15 parking instead of $161 fine," he said.

"It's ridiculous," motorist Eric Vesel said, as he pulled up to make a phone call on Friday 11 January. "It shouldn't be about money making, it should be about what's fair."

Elderly man Bob Cummings described the parking situation as "bloody awful."

"I'm only a pensioner, and I had an operation on my back ... flabbergasted to be honest," he said.

Burglary victim offers $10,000 reward

By Jessica Anstice A burglary victim has offered to pay a reward of $10,000 for the return of sentimental family jewellery stolen during a raid.

The Berwick home was broken into overnight on Wednesday, 9 January, whilst the house was unoccupied.

A rose gold bangle with a milk opal and a safety chain that was handed down from its owner's mother, an opal sea shell necklace, pearls, rings including wedding and engagement were among the items of jewellery taken.

Two televisions and a collection of Swarovs-

ki Disney crystals were also stolen.

Further, an Order of Australia Medal that was awarded to the homeowner for her welfare work was also taken.

These are sentimental items that are hard to replace."It's a warning that it can happen to just ordinary people. It's really disappointing," the homeowner said.

"Don't assume that you are protected, you need to install security and put your precious things away."

Doing it for Lucas

By Jessica Anstice Officer resident John Schafer wants to give back to the people that helped his three year old son Lucas through cancer treatment.

Lucas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when he was just 16 months old, on 19 September in 2016.

Mr Schafer is fundraising for the different departments at the Monash Children's Hospital through the Monash Health Foundation (MHF) that help sick and scared children when going through treatment with activities such as arts therapy, music therapy and play therapy.

The MHF guided Mr Schafer through the process of setting up an online fundraising page, ran by MHF called Everyday Hero.

With a bunch of prizes to give away, donated by local business, Mr Schafer will be selling raffle tickets and holding a card night.

He will also be cutting a ribbon shape in his hair and dying it yellow.

"The money we raise will go to the music therapy department. Last year we did the arts therapy department by holding this fundraiser," Mr Schafer said.

"There will be plenty of instruments for the therapists and children to use so we are really hoping that local businesses will get on board and help us put a smile on the children's faces.

"If anybody has a music shop it would be really nice if we could get a discount and get more bang for our money."

Mr Schafer said, "Having the support of family, friends and the wonderful people at the children's cancer centre means it makes our families journey through this a bit more bearable.

"It's real easy to forget about Lucas sister Lauren, age five, we also need to remind ourselves that Lauren too needs time for herself playing with her friends or cousin."

A 25 year old Narre Warren man has allegedly been caught high range drink driving and speeding.

Police observed a Mazda 3 travelling east on Monash Freeway at 188km/h between Narre Warren Road and Clyde Road about 4.15am on 5 January.

The vehicle exited on to Clyde Road where it was allegedly detected travelling at 108km/h in a 60 zone before being intercepted by police. The man had a breath alcohol reading of 0.139.

Police say the driver's P1 Probationary driver's licence had been previously cancelled and disqualified at court.

The vehicle, which belonged to his future father-in-law was impounded for 30 days. He is expected to appear at court at a later date with charges including reckless conduct endangering life and speed dangerous.

Police search for missing teen Wade Warke

Lucas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when he was just 16 months old.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing 14-year-old Sunbury teen Wade Warke.

Wade was last seen on 30 December in Sunbury.

Police and family have concerns for Wade's welfare due to his age and the length Have you seen this of time he has been boy? missing.

Investigators have released an image of Wade in the hope that someone may be able to provide information on his current whereabouts.

He is known to frequent Hampton Park area as well as the Fountain Gate Shopping centre.

A Cranbourne North secondary school student’s bright artwork where “everyone counts” will become a visible image on the roads.

Alkira Secondary College Year 9 student Laura Marzec won first place in last year’s Wallara ‘Picture This’ art competition, and will appear on a Wallara Australia bus.

Wallara, a Dandenong-based disability support service for adults in the South-East, invited secondary students to get creative and produce artwork under the theme ‘social inclusion for people with different abilities.’

Laura said her artwork depicted a world globe with people raising and holding their hands, with “everyone feeling valued, important and happy.”

“In the design, the houses are close together and look similar, this promotes our society having equal opportunities for everyone,” she said.

“The colours I used in this design I think are eye catching, bright, happy and I wanted this drawing to have contrast.“ Laura’s entry wowed a panel of eight judges from Wallara which also earned her a cheque for $250.

The competition is held annually at two South-East schools to inspire students to depict social inclusion.

Last year, Hallam Senior College and Alkira Secondary College were the chosen schools.

Celebrate Australia Day with Rotary Go local and celebrate Australia Day at Pioneers Park, Berwick on Saturday 26 January from 10am until 3pm.

Once again the Rotary Club of Berwick is hosting a fun filled day for all.

The celebration includes the traditional flag raising ceremony with the Berwick Pipers and Cadets.

The rotary are fortunate to have Sue Stanley as their Australia Day ambassador.

Community awards will be presented by local Federal MP Jason Wood.

Lost control Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash which occurred in Narre Warren on Sunday, 13 January morning.

Officers have been told a Holden sedan was travelling east along Princes Highway about 1am when the driver lost control of the car.

The car rolled and ended up landing on its roof.

The driver of the car, believed to be a man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Three other occupants of the car, a teenage boy and two girls, were not seriously injured but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police are investigating if speed or racing was a factor in the crash and wish to speak to the occupants of a red hatch which was seen to be driving near the sedan at the time of the incident.

Forgiving Tree appeal helps many People across the Casey Cardinia region donated more than $10,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items to the Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Forgiving Tree Appeal in the lead up to Christmas.

In years past, library members were able to get their library fines waived in return for donated gifts and food.

However in 2018 CCL permanently removed overdue fines, which changed the focus of this year's campaign.

The Forgiving Tree has provided a call to action for people wanting to pay it forward and help people doing it tough. CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said it was inspiring to witness the generosity of library members, even when the waiving of overdue fines was no longer an incentive.

The removal of overdue fines at CCL has proved a great success.

There has been a relatively small increase in overdue items, more items are being borrowed and there has been a marked reduction in 'lost items'.

Mr Buckingham said, "Our members have demonstrated just how committed and giving they are. It's clear that they are motivated to help others and we're delighted to be able to facilitate their compassion through our libraries.

"This time of year can be difficult for many.

There are a lot of added pressures.

"The Forgiving Tree encouraged our community to step up and contribute to a brighter Christmas for locals in need."

Berwick local Melinda Bowd was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis two decades ago and went from being an extremely active mother of three and a full time nurse, to experiencing unbearable pain on a daily basis - eventually having to leave her job.

A form of chronic disease, psoriatic arthritis destroys joints and causes inflammation in the surrounding connective tissues, muscles and tendons.

While there is no cure, Ms Bowd believes that becoming an advocate for her own health has been key to living effectively with a chronic disease.

Almost 20 years on, and after five knee arthroscopies and overcoming thyroid cancer, she still exudes positivity and resilience.

“I’m more passionate than ever about advocating for and helping others living with my condition,” she said.

Ms Bowd believes that advocating for your health is important, but she also stresses that this doesn’t mean doing it alone.

In her case, she visits her GP and rheumatologist regularly to help her manage her pain, and her qualifications as a nurse and a background in psychology allow her to nurture her mental health.

She is also a patient council member for Victoria for CreakyJoints Australia, an organisation which provides support, education, research and advocacy to patients and families affected by arthritis.

Ensure your pet’s registration is paid Is your pet’s registration and details up-to-date with the City of Casey?

There’s still a number of pet owners who have not renewed their pet’s 2018 registration, and council is reminding those residents to either advise us if their circumstances have changed or to pay their renewal urgently.

Those who haven’t renewed their registration for reasons such as moving to another municipality or because their pet has passed on, are encouraged to contact Council so the pet’s details and records can be updated.

To advise council if your circumstances have changed email caseycc@casey.vic.gov. au or call 9705 5200, otherwise you can renew your animal(s) registration online on the pet registration page to avoid further action.

It’s mandatory under state legislation that all dogs and cats over three months of age are registered with their local council.

From this week, council’s City Compliance team will be proactively following up on unpaid animal registrations from 2018 (which were due on 10 April) and conducting property visits across the municipality.

Infringements will be issued for all animals that are found to be not registered, with the current infringement for ‘failing to renew registration’ being $322 per animal.

Registration helps Council to reunite lost pets with their owners if they become lost, including after hours. Pet registration fees also support Council to deliver a range of other important animal related services including pet events, collecting stock on roads and ensuring pet shops, shelters and breeders are managed in accordance with Codes of Practice.

Both new and experienced runners and walkersj oined in the festivities from 7.30 am, including a warm-up hosted by YMCA staff.

The five-kilometre course was open to people of all ages and fitness abilities, and considered the perfect introduction to running.

Our sweltering shame

By Rowan Forster Victoria's triple-zero service has revealed both Pakenham and Berwick are hotspots for toddlers and children being locked inside sweltering cars.

It comes as yet another three kids were reportedly left inside a vehicle near Heritage Springs Shopping Centre on Tuesday afternoon, despite the scorching heat.

The mercury skyrocketed to 38 degrees Celsius in Pakenham, with the temperature expected to be at least 20 degrees hotter inside a vehicle.

The Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) said last summer there were 564 cases of a child being locked in a hot car.

On average, emergency services responded to six calls a day, with 199 call-outs in January alone.

Joining Pakenham and Berwick as the most troublesome suburbs were Frankston, Preston and Dandenong.

ESTA's executive director of operations Patrick Berry urged parents and carers to remember that the temperature inside a car could be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside.

He said there is no excuse for leaving children or pets in hot cars.

"If you see a child or pet locked in a car make sure you call triple zero (000) and state your location clearly to the operator," he said.

Those who see children or pets locked inside a hot car are urged to call triple-zero.

"If you are in a car park, look for landmarks, section names, numbers or the colour of the parking bay so you can provide specific details."

Mr Berry said he hoped that the number of calls would drop with community awareness.

manager, said leaving a child unattended in a car, even for a short time, was dangerous.

"Most of the temperature rise inside a car occurs within the first five minutes and leaving the windows down has little effect on the temperature rise," he said.

"A child's body temperature rises three to

five times faster than an adult, which places children at greater risk of suffering from dehydration and life threatening heatstroke.

"It's a good idea to keep your keys on you at all times when packing and unpacking the car to reduce the risk of your keys accidentally becoming locked in the car with a child."

Cash for troubled youth

By Rowan Forster My Place and the Pakenham Health Centre will reap the benefits of a record $1.45 billion mental health federal funding cash splash - in a funding model shake-up set to offer local organisations and patients greater long term certainty.

Health Minister Greg Hunt joined Latrobe MP Jason Wood at Main Street's My Place hub on 16 January, spruiking the benefits for Pakenham, Beaconsfield and Berwick.

It is believed the investment could facilitate the development of a second storey at the council-operated youth facility.

The organisations will also be spared the uncertainty of re-tendering for contracts ever year, providing greater security for staff and those experiencing mental health conditions.

"Community mental health is about delivering people outcomes in their own communities, and My Place is an example of this," Mr Hunt said.

"It is helping to run the Bounce Back program and the South East Melbourne Public Health Network (PHN) and Cardinia Shire are cooperating.

"They are delivering outcomes to these magnificent young people and giving them hope, support and a pathway to a really bright future."

My Place is reportedly bursting at the seams, with both counsellor rooms frequently booked out.

The funding will encompass an estimated $617 million for youth mental health, $399 million for psychological therapies, $177 million for mental health nurses, $77 million for suicide prevention, $74 million for mental health in aged care and $89 million for indigenous mental health.

"This amazing group of young Australians here in Pakenham are dealing with the day to day challenges that people face, and they're able to access this support because of the PHN funding," Mr Hunt added.

PHNs has tirelessly been pushing for long term contracts to replace the annual re-tendering process, amid concerns for the disruption to critical patient services.

"It's great to be able to launch the service here at a local facility," Kiera Mansfield, general manager of South East Melbourne PHN, said.

"When we started this journey with the young people in this region two years ago, we asked a young girl named Lucy what her experience had been to date.

"She said 'I'm either too unwell or I'm not unwell enough to get the help and services I need' and we took her as our champion and built the service with her in mind."

In 2017-18, about 200,000 Australians used more than 900,000 services through local PHN-commissioned mental health providers, Department of Health data shows.

New jobs in cafe culture

By Brendan Rees A new cafe has opened in Cranbourne East with the aim of providing a “second chance” for marginalised people to land a job.

The cafe, L’Arte Central, will train people with mental health challenges to gain or return to employment, education, volunteering or other meaningful activities.

City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon joined the team of L’Arte Central to officially open the social enterprise cafe at 65 BerwickCranbourne Road, Cranbourne East in December.

Life Central managing director Drew Gormlie said the cafe would create pathways for people into mainstream community life and help realise their full potential.

“At L’Arte we don’t employ people to make coffee; we make coffee to employ people,“ he said.

He said $125,000 had been raised to go towards building the facility with another

$200,000 needed to complete renovations.

“We are still in the process of raising money but we have received $50,000 from the Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation and over $50,000 from private donors in the past year.“ It’s expected the cafe will open its doors to the public in March next year.

Students learn all the dramas of ‘getting smashed’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Smashed Project is proof that learning can be entertaining - even on the serious issue of underage drinking.

Theatre-in-education group Gibber Australia visited Hampton Park and Lyndhurst secondary colleges late last year as part of a national tour that’s reached 140 schools and 30,000 Year 8 and 9 students.

Students don’t want to be lectured on “this stuff”, says Gibber Australia chief executive Tim Watt.

“It talks in a language they understand, and in a way that entertains and engages them.”

The show aims for relevance. It portrays “pretty ordinary” teen characters in a slice of life, tackling the pressures to “fit in” and to “look cool”.

The script is regularly updated with the language of the schoolyard.

“If it’s unbelievable, they’re not going to go for it,” Mr Watt said.

The play ends with an accident that has long-term consequences.

The students then take part in interactive workshops, examining the choices made in the play’s “sliding doors” moments.

Effectively, they’re advising each other on the dangers and the consequences, Mr Watt said.

Months down the track, sometimes the actors get a hint of the impact they have.

Such as a student in the audience who stops her binge drinking and summons the courage to seek help.

In a post-audience survey, 85 per cent said they were unlikely to drink alcohol underage.

But overall, the stats aren’t as bad as people think.

According to official surveys, less underage Australians were drinking or taking part in the binge culture of generations gone by, Mr Watt said.

“The younger generation are taking on board the message about the risks of alcohol.”

The Smashed Project has visited Greater Dandenong schools as part of a national tour.

“To make wines of this quality you must have good taste!“ he declared.

Other awards include the Casey Cardinia Business Award in 2017 in the Hospitality category.

Wine writer James Halliday gave the 2016 Cannibal Creek Reserve Pinot Noir 95 out of100, while Jeremy Oliver has also highly rated their wines saying that the Cannibal Creek Reserve Sauvignon Blan 2017 was ‘... one of the few Australian... that can rival the best from Marlborough’.

The winery is fully equipped to process 40 plus tonne or grapes. The modern, quality equipment includes air bag press, crusher and destemmer, elevator, sorting table and transfer pump and must pump and tank storage for about 30,000 litres, many barrels and approximately 60000 bottles of wine stock at any given time.

There is a packing shed with coolroom, a workshop, machinery shed and stockyards.

The vineyard comes with all vineyard equipment and tractors.

Motov8 - Founder John McMahon 2018 has been a huge year for Motov8. I basically stopped marketing to schools and started marketing directly to parents through Facebook. I started booking out venues in Warragul, Traralgon, Wonthaggi, Casey and the Northern suburbs and I also went to Queensland and Perth doing these events motovating boys. Basically, I book the venue, I set up an advertising campagin on Facebook, parents book and turn up on the night with their boys. I had 273 people at the largest one.

In January I am doing a tour from Melton to Canberra.

I changed what I was doing because it was almost impossible to get through to the right people in schools. This way I get to speak directly to boys and their families.

I am on the road a lot now. I have a team of people that come with me to my events to help me run them. I want to get to the point where my events are being held in every state in Australia.

The most exciting thing about 2019 will be the launch of my new business, Savage Angels, which is Motov8 for girls. The slogan behind the business is that not all girls want to have fun. I want to empower girls to make choices independent of their femaninity. It’s about inspiring them to make choices about what they want out of life. I’ll get brand ambassadors on board and I won’t deliver the seminars but I’ll get an equally passionate the energetic person to do that for me.

Under the initiative we hope to encourage people to get 20 or more colleagues together to share in a Community Table lunch. The food will be delivered to the workplace and cost no more than what you would normally pay for an off-site lunch. Part of the proceeds will be ’paid forward’ to those less fortunate.

And to add a little fuel to the fire, there’s a possibility that a major player in the Aussie food world (can’t mention names yet) will align and support the initiative.

Tall, Dark and Nutty and Luxe Grazing Founder Jade Fraser It has been difficult to continue my businesses, Luxe Grazing and Tall, Dark and Nutty, with all the health regulations and the costs associated with getting a business going. The muesli business had to take a back seat to the grazing boards, which just took off. I had people asking me about orders for next year.

Unfortunately, I was running my businesses out of my mum’s kitchen and we would have had to install a second sink to meet health regulations. It was a very difficult decision, but in the end it wasn’t worth the investment or the headache. With the muesli the volume I had to produce to make it profitable was beyond what I could do on my own.

I have now joined forces with Clive Canal helping him with his business, Whozcookn.

Clive needed admin assistance and he knew I have a real passion for food and for social enterprise. We met and got talking when we both co-worked at the Waterman Business Centre.

I have reached out to a few celebrity chefs and I hope to be interviewing Maggie Beer in January for the Whozcookn website. My goal is to pursue a career in food writing. I would love to do a Bachelor of Arts in writing and write for magazines.

Schools are the key to active children says expert Sport Australia CEO Kate Palmer says schools are a key vehicle to solving the nation’s inactivity crisis.

Ms Palmer launched the 31st Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) International Conference at the AIS this week.

Sport Australia is sponsoring and hosting the ACHPER conference at its AIS campus in Canberra, with 250 delegates from around the world including physical education teachers, sport educators, coaches and associated health practitioners.

A report card released by the Active Healthy Kids Australia late last year scored Australia a D-minus for children’s physical activity levels, ranking the nation 32 of 49 countries. Research

shows 81 per cent of Australian children are not meeting our physical activity guidelines.

“This is not good enough because we know sport and physical activity can play a crucial role in the holistic development of children, putting them on the path to vibrant and productive lives,” Ms Palmer said.

“It can impact positively on their physical and mental health, social development, and their ability to learn.

“There is also a long-term gain because we know children who grow up active and playing sport are 10 per cent more likely to remain active as adults.

“We want to make daily physical activity a part of every child’s life and we believe

a key vehicle to solving our inactivity crisis is through schools. We want to support schools and teachers to deliver high quality physical education because we believe that is a critical vehicle for children to develop the confidence, competence and the motivation required to move.

“Sport Australia is committed to making Australia the world’s most active nation and that will require generational change. Sport Australia wants to work collaboratively with the education sector and with organisations such as ACHPER, so together we can get Australian children moving more often.”

The Australian Government’s $200 million Sporting Schools program, managed by Sport Australia, is one example of how Australian

children get free access to physical activity. In just over three years, the program has reached 84 per cent of Australian schools.

“Despite the program’s enormous reach, evidence tells us we need more. Increasingly, Australian children are unable to perform basic fundamental movement skills such as running, throwing, kicking, catching or jumping," Ms Palmer said.

“Sport Australia is developing a national commitment to increase physical literacy by embedding it within education environments.

Our focus is on ensuring all young Australians have access to the volume of time and the quality of experience needed to ensure they develop into more physically literate Australians.”

Keeping children safe Kidsafe Victoria has released a warning on the dangers of low speed run overs in the lead up to the start of the new school year - a time that signifies increased activity around driveways, school drop off zones and school crossings.

The organisation said that the start of the new school year brings a reminder for motorists to be extra vigilant around crowded school areas, including obeying speed limits, crossing signals and parking and drop off zone rules, so as not to create dangerous pedestrian situations for children.

Jason Chambers, General Manager of Kidsafe Victoria, noted that child pedestrians are at increased risk of injury because unlike adults, they can't see over parked cars, they can't tell where sounds are coming from and they think that if they can see you, you can see them.

An emphasis is also being placed on safety around driveways with Kidsafe Victoria highlighting them as one of the most dangerous

areas around the home.

"A large number of driveway run over incidents occur in the morning and late afternoon, both of which are busy times for families coming to and from school, kindergarten and work", said Mr Chambers.

Most driveway run overs occur in the driveway of the child's own home, or in a friend or relative's driveway. The driver is usually a parent, relative or family friend. In the majority of cases, the driver doesn't know that the child is close to the vehicle, they believe that they are being looked after elsewhere.

Mr Chambers said that it was important to remember that children are unpredictable and surprisingly quick, which places them at high risk around moving vehicles.

"All cars have large blind spots, some more than 15 metres. Children's small size, together with these large blind spots, means that children standing or stepping behind the vehicle often cannot be seen from the driver's seat."

Now in its 16th year, Rockn' Suzies dance classes are taking Pakenham and Cranbourne by storm.

While the Pakenham classes are held in the hall (near the library) on the corner of John and Henry streets, the Cranbourne class is held at the senior citizens' hall on the corner of Codrington Street and the South Gippsland Highway.

Both locations have beginner and advanced rock 'n' roll classes open to all with no partner required. FOCUS ON … SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN

It’s showtime in Lang Lang The Lang Lang Show is on again this year on Saturday 19 January.

The show will once again feature a full program of horse events including riding, Shetland, Clydesdales, miniature ponies and stockhorse sections - just to name a few! Pre-entry for all horse events is required (except for the fun ring).

Once again, all showjumping events will be held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds the week before on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 January.

The Beef Cattle Spectacular will also return and is always a great success and well worth a look. Additionally, there is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended with many breeds competing for the title of show champion.

The Sheep Stud Show section is new to the program this year with the committee expecting up to 100 entries. There will also be a miniature goat display with many local breeders bringing along their cutest companions.

The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery and produce.

While the Lang Lang Men’s Shed will be running the fresh veggie stall, the Bubble Muffin Kids Cooking Club will be running four entertaining shows throughout the day for children aged between five and 11 years. This free activity educates children about eating in a fun and healthy way.

There will also be an animal nursery, a free art activity, showbags and assorted rides to keep kids entertained. One lucky boy or girl will even win a BMX bike and helmet in the lucky gate prize. Every child will get a free ticket, but they must be present at the draw at 2pm to collect the prize.

Judging starts at 9am and goes until 3pm.

The show is held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds on Westernport Road in Lang Lang.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. Nabi launches academy

By Nick Creely While Afghanistan international star Mohammad Nabi continues to build an almighty reputation on-field in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Renegades, his off-field impact is just as meaningful.

The 34-year-old Afghan cricketer - who participated in the first Test match and ODI for his country in recent years - recently launched his very own cricket academy, all to inspire the next generation of cricketers coming through.

A star spinner and aggressive middle-order batsman, Nabi has travelled globally playing limited overs cricket, and has established himself as one of the most versatile cricketers on the planet.

The launch - which was held at Casey Fields, home of the Cranbourne Cricket Club - on Friday 4 January, was well attended by

members of the public, with special guests such as fellow Afghan star Rashid Khan, Melbourne Renegades players Tom Cooper, Joe Mennie, Cameron Boyce, Usman Shinwari and Jack Wildermuth, as well as Renegades coach Andrew McDonald, with state MPs and the Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon also helping kick things off.

The Nabi International Cricket Academy (NICA) is all about giving players opportunities and pathways to gain the necessary skills to improve their game, and strive to deliver high quality cricket coaching with an aim to develop international players.

The training provided by the NICA will cater to aspiring boys and girls who want to improve their game, and ultimately, reach the highest level, with the academy hoping to develop state-of-the-art cricket coaching and training

academies in Australia, which has a growing Afghan community, Afghanistan and United Kingdom.

There will be both an Australian program, which will kick off in the summer of 2019 and run for 10 weeks to fit in with the start of the cricket season, as well as an Afghanistan Academy.

Roman Sadath, the president of NICA, said that the launch was a success, and hopes the academy can continue to grow as it builds.

"First of all I would express my sincere gratitude to everybody for supporting and helping with Nabi international Cricket Academy," he said.

"The grand opening was a great success.

I am very happy and excited to see great national and international players who attended

the launch.

"It was also a very proud moment for me and others to see high profile guests present at the launch."

Sadath encourages everyone who has high aspirations in cricket to jump onboard, and believes the lessons that can be taught by Nabi will hold future generations in good stead.

"Nabi International Cricket Academy is a multicultural academy and we are very delighted that we had people from different backgrounds," he said.

"Nabi is one of the best cricket all-rounders in the world. He is very passionate and dedicated to pass on his knowledge and experience to others through this academy."

What more could you ask for?

Buckley Ridges and Springvale South combined for a total of 578 runs in 80 overs at Park Oval during the blockbuster Round 9 clash on Saturday, but in the end, the Bucks - the ladder leaders - held off the Bloods.

Returning from injury, Bucks skipper David White (149 not out) put on an absolute clinic, sending the ball flying to all parts, sending 15 fours to the boundary and eight whopping sixes.

The Bucks were off to a blistering start despite an early wicket, with Daniel Watson (53 off 33 balls) in an ominous mood, but gun quick Matt Wetering (2/50) managed to stem the bleeding somewhat.

But White combined with Susa Pradeep (43) for an entertaining 101 run partnership, and the Bloods were merciless to stop the Bucks from compiling a mammoth total.

Eventually, the home side reached 5/301 off their 40 overs, at an alarming run-rate of 7.5 an over.

Adventurous opener Nathan King (83) plundered eight sixes as the Bloods gave the chase an almighty shake, but the Bloods were restricted to 9/277, with a crucial spell by tweaker Matthew Goodwright (3/26) proving the difference.

Demons take care of Bulls

By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER - ROUND 9 Mark Cooper's Kooweerup just had too much class for Cardinia on Saturday. The Demons batted first and the fluency of openers Cooper and Chris O'Hara loomed brightest.

The pair swiftly knocked their way to 85, before the skipper was dismissed for 27. O'Hara combined superbly with Chris Bright (70) to bring the innings back on track with a match defining 108-run stand, that lifted the Demons to an imposing 7/261 off 40 overs.

O'Hara made the Bulls pay, lifting his bat aloft for the first time since February 2014, in a sublime knock of 109.

The Bulls got off to a slow start with Nooy and Ben Parrott back in the sheds within the first few overs, but gun recruit AJ Walker (102) took it to the Demons, blasting an excellent century before Cooper (2/48) broke through.

The home side suffered a dramatic middleorder collapse - sparked by the brilliance of Jess Mathers (3/42) - going from 4/192 to 9/219 at the end of the 40 overs.

By Nick Creely Courtesy of a searing Nathan Lambden spell and composed half centuries to Lachie Sperling and Jordan Wyatt, Casey-South Melbourne has started off 2019 in perfect fashion.

Not only did the Swans knock over a strong St Kilda side - albeit with a few names missing - they cemented themselves firmly inside the Victorian Premier Cricket top eight, such has been their extraordinary rise this season.

On a healthy looking Casey Fields pitch, it was obvious that for the batters, starting would be difficult, and that there was plenty on offer with the ball if the bowlers put it in the right spots.

But after winning the toss and batting, Luke Wells (14), Ryan Quirk (18) and Jared Maxwell (4) soon found themselves in the shed, with quick Henry Hall doing plenty of damage early.

Wells in particular was an early blow, with the Swans skipper often getting his side off to a strong start.

Experience, and with just enough innovation to keep the scoreboard ticking along, Sperling (60) and Michael Wallace (33) dug in, forming a crucial partnership that took them to 3/117 before the departure of the latter brought the visitors back to level pegging.

Coming off some runs just before the break, the aggressive Jordan Wyatt (58) - a player that never allows a bowler to settle into a rhythm - combined with Sperling to continue to tick the score along, and eventually the Swans mustered up 9/235 off their 50, with some late wickets taken by the visitors pegging the score back slightly.

But, nonetheless, it was a strong total on that pitch, and an even clearer indication of just how much depth the Swans now possess with their batting.

Often bowling without luck so far this season, Nathan Lambden (4/47) finally got just rewards with his efforts, with the Swans' spearhead rummaging through the top-order early to leave the visitors 2/3.

It was just rewards for the talented quick, who after a quiet patch before Christmas, has got himself going now with 17 wickets at a touch under 25 next to his name.

Berwick aths stars shine It was a special day for Berwick Little Athletics on 15 December at the Little Athletics Victoria State Relay Championships.

Held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park, Berwick Little Athletics had its most successful State Relay event ever, coming away with eight medals; three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Impressively, another 15 teams made finals, placing them in the top eight in Victoria.

The gold medal-winning teams were; U12B medley, U16B medley and U16 mixed

4x100m. Silver medal-winning teams were; U9B 4x200m and U16 mixed 4x200m. Bronze medal-winning teams were; U9B 4x100m, U11 mixed 4x200m and U16G medley.

A very special mention must go out to the U16 girls, who have qualified for state every year - since U9s - in the medley event and whose previous best finish was 5th. They showed what persistence, determination and sticking together can achieve by coming away with a bronze medal their final Little Athletics Victoria relay event.

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Pennant returned on Saturday and it was a must-win for the Cranbourne number one side to keep their finals aspirations alive. They came home with a good solid win and a very valuable 16 points, which were badly needed.

Cranbourne skips, Isobel Partington and Lynne Wood teamed up and went all the way to become Victorian state senior women's champions. A great way to finish off a good year of bowls for both ladies before the Christmas break.

Division 2 Skip Sue Hudson and her team of Joe Byrne, Lynne Wood, and Fritz Helle continued their recent great form with another huge win against Glen Waverley. Sue and Fritz are playing some great bowls together which is bad news for the opposition teams. They won by 20 shots, which set up a 23-shot win and 16 pennant points.

Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Glen Waverley 61.

Division 3 Skip Tony Collins and his team of Noel Hardy, Graeme Wood and Allan Cook had an 11-shot win on Saturday, which contributed to the 10shot win against Narre Warren who have been travelling well this season.

Cranbourne 75 (14 points) defeated Narre Warren 65.

Division 5 Nothing went to plan and they had a day they would prefer to forget. Berwick were just too good on the day with all rinks losing.

Division 7 How does he do it? Skip Sofio Raiti and his team of David Brown, Helen Witherden and Rob Dickson had another huge win, this time by 23 shots. Opposition teams must tremble in their boots when they come across Sofio, who is having a fantastic year. Not only did Sofio have a good day, the team managed to pick up all 18 points in victory Cranbourne 105 (18 points) defeated Narre Warren 52.

Six-a-side Mick Feeley is enjoying his bowls and the opportunity to skip this season. He didn't let the selectors down, winning by 11 shots on his rink with team members Brian Hall and Stan Williams.

NARRE WARREN Saturday saw the return of pennant bowls and Narre Warren teams were split between Cranbourne (Division 3 and 7) and Fountain Gate (Division 4 and 5). Unfortunately, the year didn't commence as well as hoped, with Division 3 suffering a disappointing loss. Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson won 20-13 and John Wright, Percy Herath, Brent Hone and Zak Storm won

16-15, but Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (17-24) and Erik Luyteers, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar (12-23) both lost.

Narre Warren (1) 4-65 lost to Cranbourne (2) 14-75.

Division 4 at Fountain Gate was the only winning team.
